So about 2 weeks ago I walked on my youngest brother (19) reading fanfictions on a tumblr like website, we were talking and I looked at his screen for a sec and the dialogs were so typical I was like "WAIT A DAMN MINUTE, THESE ARE FANFICS!!" and he laughed and said yes because he's very cool. And I was like "look if you wanna read the good stuff, you need to go on AO3! I'll send you a link" and life went by normally afterward.

Today I received a text from him, basically saying "why did you send me this website, I'm writing a fic because of you!"

So yeah, my baby brother, who's currently moving abroad, literally sleeping in a hotel room he's sharing with my parents, is writing his first fanfiction in a small notebook, working on his 32th page of the day and I'm SO FUCKING PROUD!

I've been informed of the existance of a 'movement' I suppose, when young folk on tiktok share their journey as they're - get this - on their way to change race or ethnicity. 😐😬

I don't even fucking know what to say.

I remember when I was younger, in my school I was a bit of a trendsetter when it came to anime. Because other kids were really repressed and "no I don't watch chinese cartoons", but then there was me, the 'I have the power of god and anime on my side' edge lord. But even at that stage, as more and more kids started watching anime, none of them wantes to be asian. Yeah, they probably wanted to visit Japan, but at no point would any of them want to be japanese.

It's a thing I say often and by saying this I never try to absolve the guilt. Just state a fact and how the racism may come through.

So my country has literally 0 colonial history. Not a single one in sight. The lack of said history means that people sometiems don't understand what racism is. This obviously causes situation when they say something racist but they're not fully aware that what they said is racist. Or why would it even be racist.

But I know for a fact that not a single one of the kids would like to be asian because they were aware of how shitty non-white people are being treated.

My class had the only child that was cosntantly called N words. The funny thing is: he's not black. Not even 1/16th or 1/32th black. Both of his parents were as white as humanly possible. He was just born with darker skin shade, that's it.

With that in mind it terrifies me that the newer generations are *regressing* and become dumber and deaf-er to things they can more organically experience. Like nobody above age 12 would hear about how black people are being murdered on the streets and then go "they have fluffy hair, I'm black now". That's insane, you have to be insane and deranged to do that. But I don't want to be too harsh with the kids and growing people. I know that they think they're having harmless fun.

Obviously what happens is: 'oh I want what they're having [place korean pop idol or anime waifu]' but just the very superficiallity. Yes I want to be pretty and widely considered pretty but I don't want to be called names, threatened for spreading virus or killed.

Anyway, this also gave me the courage to announce the decision to finally change my ethnicity. From now on I'm british tourist. Hide valuables because I'm taking everything home. Gods save the queen.

I'm halfway through Johns' first JSA run. Some issue were better, other were worse. Nonetheless, imo one of the most interesting plot thread happened to be centered around Doctor Fate, although it didn't seem so visible till its nexus point in JSA #48.

In this series the mantle of Doctor Fate has been assumed by Hector Hall. Yes, Hector Hall, son of Carter Hall aka Hawkman. Some readers might know him from Gaiman's Sandman, where he appeared as a ghost.

In this run, Hector technically first appeared in JSA #2 as a nameless, reincarnated infant destined to become the next Dr Fate. The actual reveal happened in JSA #4, when Hector (magically grown up) assumed his role and defeated Mordru - a Lord of Chaos, trapping him in Fate's Amulet.

JSA #4

In #14th, Hector sought help in fighting Extant. Kent Nelson's ghost advised him to turn to Mordru. The Lord of Chaos told Hector, that "Hourman is the key!" and that "Dove is the key!", simultaneously hinting that he knew Lyta Hall's whereabouts.

Who the hell is she? Well, Lyta was Hector's wife; as well as a superhero - Fury; she's also mostly known from Gaiman's Sandman

Several issues later, in #19, Hector decides to visit his "new mother" in order to wake her from coma only to discover she was actually Lyta Hall - Hector's late wife.

Doctor Fate, clearly and justifiably agitated, tries to come up with anything that could help his beloved.

JSA #19

Later on, in JSA: All Stars #3 Hector conversates with Nabu in a bar. There, Hector witnesses his own fate, which is to kill Kendra Summers - the reincarnated Hawkgirl. Hector refuses to let it happen. Nabu tries to reason with the guy, but he has already sweared to prevent the destiny itself.

In the meantime, in JSA #24 a reunion happens between father and son

Flash forward, in #32, "Nabu" advises Hector to head to Gemworld as if the cure for Lyta lies there. Keep in mind this scene, it's gonna come back.

JSA #41

So, Hector, fully determined, travels to Gemworld in #41st, where he meets those two enigmatic fellas - Flaw and Cutter. The latter explains why Mordru wanted Fate's amulet so badly and how he had come to be. In #43th, the three of them visit Lord Wrynn's place of death. Wrynn had tried to acquire Mordru's power, eventually becoming overpowered with it. Despite that, his remains still hold a great deal of mana, so Hector takes his skull.

In the following issue, hopeful Fate uses that skull, only to find out that...Lyta was actually reincarnated Dawn Granger [aka Dove]

She reveals a big retcon surrounding her partner and a former super hero - Hawk. So, this guy went mad and killed some JSA members as Extant, 'cause he was being manipulated by someone. That someone was *taratamtataaam* Mordru

As he hears that name, Hector leaves in rush. He reappers before District Court, where JSA handles the mess with Cobra's accolytes. But something feels off - Doctor Fate anatgonizes other members. While taking off the helmet, he reveals the concealed visage, not Hector's - but Mordru's!

Oh, right; Cutter actually is some child-looking guy called...Child? Anyway, he was helping Mordru this whole time.

In #47 we find out that Mordru swapped places with Hector; while the first one was up and running around, the other one remained trapped in Fate's Amulet. Hector meets other people who wore Fate's helmet: Kent Nelson, Inza Nelson, Jared Stevens, Christopher Freeman and even Eric & Linda Strauss. To everybody's surprise [mine too] they are just Hall's imagination. Nabu reveals that back in the #32th issue it wasn't him talking to Hector, but Mordru [and so the devil came to collect].

That's when the crucial moment happens; Hector is told to get his shit together, to let go, to relinquish his mission of bringing Lyta back. And although it's not easy [it never is], he's not left alone - Nabu supports him.

JSA #48

Hector contacts Dove and tells her to find Arion, whose body was possesed by Mordru. Mission accomplished, soul has been found, the bad guy's got distracted, so now Hector can finally beat the stars out of that lord-of-mud.

JSA #50

So how does he do that? Well, Fate humiliates his foe by showing the future, proving that Mordru is destined to eternally fail.

He later imprisons Mordru into the Rock of Eternity and rejoins the rest of JSA. And everyone lived happily ever after [or rather - for now everyone lived happily ever after]

JSA #51

And so, despite Mordru being a forgettable antagonist (who shares some similarities, both physically and characteristically with Vandal Savage); damn, that whole JSA run having ups and downs, it managed to create a story about a man, who after constantly fighting fate, learns to move on...to let her go

And so, perhaps we could derive two very different meanings from Passengers' most popular song. Maybe

when you let her go

doesn't only mean your realisation of how much you loved someone when you miss them

Hello! I hope you're having a good day and I'm not bothering you. You are an amazing artist and you always seem so nice and down to earth, so I hoped you might have a few words on my problem. I sometimes draw fanart and it's decent enough but I know that if I ever wanted to pursue art, I'd need to work hard on fundamentals. But I'm also struggling with depression and it's now bad enough that I can't imagine a future for myself at all, let alone set a goal to work towards. So I sometimes (1/3)

manage to draw for a day or two and then can’t bring myself to try for weeks, because it’s too difficult and it feels pointless. Everyone says ‘you can do it if you just practice’, and maybe it’s true, but practicing is extremely hard for me. I can’t afford a therapy right now either, so I can’t hope to try when I’m in better mental state. I’m already 30yo and behind everyone else, I worry wanting to do art is just a waste of time and I should focus on whatever job I can get instead (2/3)   of chasing impossible dreams. And if I draw just for myself, it feels like I’m wasting time. So of course it’s a personal issue and I understand if you won’t answer! I get how it’s a weird question! But I’m really at a loss, and need some objective opinion. If it’s even worth trying to become an illustrator, if the work is something possible to reach, when I know it would take me much longer than other people to even get on higher skill level? Ok, joke aside, forstarters, I want to tell you that the advice I’m going to give you will be the one of a random Joe on the Internet. I’m an illustrator yes, but I’m still a random Joe. In other words,I’m not a psychologist or someone who has any training with depression even ifI suffer from depression myself. I mean, it’s not because someone has a broken legthat they suddenly become an orthopedist and that they can truly help you withyour own condition. They know about the pain and the experience but they won’t be able toheal you properly. So, what I’m going to tell you is just my two cents on your problem from what Igathered from your asks.

Alright, I think thereare several things to unpack here.

I can’t imaginea future for myself at all, let alone set a goal to work towards

Depression. -____- I thought Iwas going to die before turning 32. I couldn’t believe it when I celebrated my 32th birthdayso like you, I didn’t have any goal because “I won’t exist in the futureanyway”

First, you have to understandthat to become an illustrator, age is somehow not a problem. I started when Iwas about 34 and I was working in a completely different field before that. In addition of having the skills, youhave to be ready financially and emotionally, that’s the most importantcriteria. It doesn’t matter if you had another job/career before becoming aprofessional artist, as you seemed to think that having a job not related to art willprevent you from becoming an illustrator in the future. Even if you work as anartist from the age of 40 to, let’s say 65, it’s already not so bad. I mean lookat Stallone. Back in the 1970s, Sylvester Stallone was a dirt-poor strugglingactor and screenwriter, who at one point couldn’t even afford rent and had tofind places where to sleep. But it all changed when Sylvester was THIRTY and hisscript for Rocky was picked up with him attached in the lead role.

Also, whereyou are lucky is that your dream of becoming an illustrator is more reachablethan let’s say, someone you want to become a K-pop star at 55 (no need to giveme THE example of the only exception on this planet who became a K-pop star at55, you know what I mean). TLDR: if you need to have a job right now, any job,do it. It’s not going to lessen your chances to reach your dream. It can giveyou the opportunity to save some money and give you some time to prepare toyour future life. BUT, let’s face it, there will be a time where you’ll have tofind the courage to take the leap.You can’t spend your life getting ready…to get ready. I KNOW it’s hard.

Hmmm. USUALLY, peoplewith depression tend not to have a real image of  their work. You’remaybe seeing it as decent but certainly, it’s MORE than good. Don’t underestimate your talent!

So I sometimesmanage to draw for a day or two and then can’t bring myself to try for weeks(…) Everyone says ‘you can do it if you just practice’, and maybe it’s true,but practicing is extremely hard for me.

From the way I see it,you need more motivation than you need practice. If you have zero motivationthat is to say zero things to fuel your inspiration_your world as an artist,this incredible inner landscape where you dig ideas_your practice will bemostly pointless. I’m saying “mostly” because any practice is good from a “gaining skills” point of view, it’s not awaste of time, but if the result of the practice makes you even more depressed, makes you lose confidence, it’s not healthy. 

To break this circle, whatyou could do, in my opinion, is trying to get involved for instance, inprojects like fandom challenges. It will give you the opportunity to draw the characters you love andcollaborate with someone. People outside the fandom are sometimes laughing atall these events, challenges, Big Bangs, prompt memes (on LJ) but you have to have acertain discipline to engage in something like this. If the thought of adeadline is too difficult for you, you could start working with a friend on acollaborative project and if even this eventuality is too hard for you, you cantry to work on a project alone, like for instance, thisart student that illuminated a copy of the Silmarillion.(ok maybe not THIS big but you got the idea). With your depression, if you try to seat at your desk and practice, practice,practice just for the sake of practicing, it’s gonna drive you mad andreinforce the idea that you’re not good enough to become an illustrator (oreven not good enough at anything). Finding the right project that can motivateyou will make you work and practice without even realizing it (if you don’t puttoo much pressure on your shoulders, of course, but yes, I know, easier saidthan done). And NO, unlike what you said_“And if I draw just for myself, itfeels like I’m wasting time”_it’s NOT a waste of time because it will be auseful practice for your future life as an illustrator. A USEFUL practice,something that will motivate you, “sparks joy” as Marie Kondo would say. You’llgain in focus, confidence, you’ll become progressively a bit prouder of yourself.Of course, you’ll always have self-doubt (like a lot of artists, we are “our harshercritics”, remember?) but at least, these doubts won’t be enough to paralyze youand prevent you from practicing, progressing, having less stress and contemplatewith more confidence your future as an illustrator…or even realizing that it’snot for you, after all, because there’s no shame in that realizing that what was yourdream was maybe not for you, not because you’re not solid or good enough for that butbecause it’s better if it stays a hobby.

However, as you wanted a “real talk”, let me tell you something. If you want to become an illustrator,you’ll have to be able to face the life of an illustrator, ALL OF IT, not onlyart. Managing your schedule, your clients, being able to stand for yourselfwhen confronted to a problem (people refusing to pay you, entitled customers,disease), having an irregular income (you’ll have a lot of money some months andnot a lot the next), going out of your comfort zone, knowing how to manage yourtaxes, etc…That’s the problem: being an illustrator is not only about art anddrawing, it’s about being your own artistic agent 24/7. What you can do to be SURE,it’s maybe in a few months from now, after you managed to motivate yourself abit more and that you did some progress without even realizing it because yourcollaboration with your friends kicked asses, is taking commissions and see howyou can handle it. It’s a good training. Check how it works when itcomes to taxes in your country beforehand, though. You’ll have a foretaste of what being anillustrator is and it will be a good practice for you.

Ok, so long story short:1) becoming an illustrator is not an unreachable dream, even to someone with depression and/or a constant fear of the future but it requires dedicationand preparation. It’s also not incompatible with having a job in a differentfield before or even starting at thirty-five -  2) You have to find a way to make your motivationand your inspiration come back by being involved in a project that you willlove. With friends, it’s even better. Motivation and inspiration are the key, before everything - 3) Built a support system (family, friends,even friends online) that will help you when you feel down.

Having someone to talk to is important

4) Taking baby steps: from fandom projects with a friend to fandom challenges with a deadline to commissions to a job as a professional illustrator. You can’t do the Indianapolis 500-Mile Raceright after obtaining your driving license. However, it doesn’t mean you’ll never be able to run it!

Voilà, it’s all I can tell you, sorry about all the grammar mistakes and the typos, I’m sure there are tons of them.

I hope you’ll get better and that you’ll manage to reach your dream or at least a life where you are happy, fulfilled, even if you don’t become a pro artist. I also hope you’ll manage to do something about your depression and that you’ll find in your area free resources (hot line, help) that will help you with this problem. So I have three questions. 1) Can you make a list and rank your fav Yang roles from fav to least fav? 2) Is it worth it to watch I Belonged to You? It looks kind of dumb. 3) Was Yang as famous/popular as he is now before Love O2O? Thank you.

Haha I’ll answer the second and the third question first because the first one was kind of tricky for me.

2. I don’t know if you heard about I Belonged To You but this movie is keeping the record of highest grossing Chinese romantic film of all time (and currently 50th highest grossing movies in China, with Hollywood movies included, of all time) , with the box office around 122 millions US$ (source wikipedia). So with that alone I would give the movie a try, not to mention Yang starred in this one haha. For me the film is good, Yang’s performance is correct (he’s kind of cute in the look of nerdy guy haha). Well, this movie is not that kind of jaw dropping movie though, the plot coud be better I admit but I must say, its cinematography is really nice, and the original soundtrack is amazing. You should watch it. 

3. Yang started his acting career in 2008 (debut film broadcasted in 2010 but that one was filmed in 2008), he is known back then but after that he was kind of struggling, he starred in a quite number of films but unfortunately they all were not successful. He was kind of bullied by his old agency as well (something like, promised to have the main role but later forced to play the supporting role etc, I don’t want to talk about this but well…). Yang only archived the whole new level of his career in 2015, with first thanks to the movie The Left Ear, the reality show Divas Hit The Road 2, then the web series The Lost Tomb and the tvseries The Whirlwind Girl. In 2016, his popularity kept rising with Love O2O and I Belonged To You. So he was already popular before Love O2O, and as far as I remember, he was named 四大流量 (one of four most popular hot young huge fanbase actors) before Love O2O. But indeed, with Love O2O kind of well received not only by Chinese but by international audiences as well, this one had a huge contribution to his popularity now.

1.  Finally I need to answer this one, normally I’m not Chinese entertainment industry (Cbiz) fan, I only watch Chinese films because of Yang haha so if I could I would say I love all of his characters but I can’t, can I ? LOL 

How to say, I first got to know Yang thanks to his role Xu Yi in the 2015 movie The Left Ear, and then got addicted and became his huge fan all because of his Zhang QiLing (The Lost Tomb). So call me biased but the first place definitely will be Zhang QiLing haha.

Ja’far speaks: The Kingdom of Sindria is the first country in the world to develop a nation from a business. By creating the kingdom of Sindria, it’s possible that the very meaning of “country” itself might change. To that extent, today, in this place, it has a great meaning to officially declare the foundation of this country to the world.

There is also a high degree of attention from the world, this founding ceremony is a very important thing.

I don’t know if it’s Ja’far or Vittel who says: from now on, things will become more and more busy with this country….

Then, some guy that works for them screams:  King Sinbad is ready!

And then Sinbad walks towards them dressed in his king clothes (he looks cute XD, they are kind of big for him though) and stands before his generals.

Sinbad says: King Ceylan! (and Sinbad is wearing his hair down, what a great time to be alive!!) and Barbarossa dono.

Barbarossa: …. (he looks at the town like they are something spiteful)

Ja’far notices and says: Barbarossa dono, you have nothing to worry about. The invitations for the seven seas alliances were cancelled off and the security for the ceremony will be perfectly carefull….

Barbs says: haa.. (he’s angry guys) the situation is as I supposed. There’s nothing but “inferior kind” all over the place. (holy…..barbs no)

Nothing but those who are not worthy of our Parthevia. In this circumstances, When will the rebel forces come in?

Ja’far is like wtf! And says: inferior kind?

Barbarossa says: That’s right! “inferiors” of dirty blood.  Ugly and of short intellect, I can’t call then people anymore.  I already tried to destroyed them til all places where my eyes could reach, but they certainly took refuge in this island.

Sinbad: With all due respect, Barbarossa dono... ( YES, this is my Sinbad! You tell him to sh*t the f*ckdjadja okay sorry)

Sinbad: This people are my citizens.  Or, otherwise, those who are equivalent to my citizens. I ask you to stop speaking that way about them. The kingdom of Sindria receives any kind of person no matter what. Whatever policy there might be there (in Parthevia) this is my country and this are my beliefs. (TN: This are mine and this country’s beliefs.)

Barbarossa turns around and says: I let my guard down at that trash and look at what happens… well, it doesn’t matter, this is your country. But…

Eventually it will have to obey Parthevia’s orders. Understand the position you are in. 

Barbs goes away and Ja’far calls Sinbad: sin…

Sinbad says: no problem, Ja’far. Let’s think about closing this founding ceremony safely at any cost.

( as the scene changes we can see Falan and Judar behind Barbs, and ju is smiling in anticipation)

Sinbad ends the chaper saying: 

I will make a declaration to the world. With the Birth of the Kingdom of Sindria, we will transform the world altogether!

MICHAEL JACKSON-”WANNA BE STARTIN' SOMETHIN'”

Ah yes, good old MJ, who was a great singles artist who managed to be a great album artist for 2 records because they were made up of singles.  I think this was the 4th or 32th single off “Thriller” and I like it because it sounds more like “Off the Wall” songs. But I am splitting hairs.  I also appreciate that Quincy Jones has his own logo.
