A Notes on that "Battle Husbands" drawing process
Tumblr media
First of all, Here is the quick sketch I do In between. Mostly when I feel like crying because I can't mix the right shade for li lianhua's robes or shoes. But then it frustrated me even more because zhan yunfei didn't looks like himself! so it served to motivatived me to go back to the main project.
Below are several of the thumbnail and initial sketch when I trying to figure out the composition,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I eventually choose the low angle perspective over the bird view for a more intimidating presence to our main. So it can give a clear distinction of which side has the upper hand on this fight.
And for the character, Yangzhouman is a calmer, steady energy (in comparison to di feisheng's baifeng baiyang) and it made for speed. So I do need li lianhua to be "light" on his feet. But still look fierce, alert, and ready to strike at any moment. Some of the pose I try for him have this softer energy for his stance, and I try to balance it with a sharp movement in his upper body. He also got some baifeng baiyang at this point, eh, so I refined his pose sharper and sharper. Initially, I want him to hold his sword in his regular habit of holding it upward (because it kinda majestic) but turns out I don't have enough brain power to draw it between the tangle of his sleeve and all that hair. So I throw out that idea really fast.
I also try one or two more pose in a different paper that sadly got drenched in the rain, along with all the planning for di feisheng! So this is all that left.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is a change in the composition from vertical to horizontal. Because in vertical composition, they stand too close to fit in the frame and li lianhua looks like he is one wrong move away from stabbing di feisheng. (Can't let him injure his newlyweed husband after all)
I laugh for a whole ten minute while stubbornly trying to make it work. And it still didn't work. So eventually, the final sketch is in the horizontal format.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I forgot to take more photo of the process after this one. Probably too distracted with all the mixing of blue and purple to make everything coherent because I desperately avoiding any green. There is only the very bright kind of green on my color stash. The cursed one. And I'm not friend with green. Unfortunately, Li lianhua wear this ambiguous muted greyish green robes. And they are in a open space of a forest. A lot of green. And di feisheng wear a very dark color. It will not looks good for their contrast if one character blended with the surrounding and the other not, when they both supposed to be the main focus.
So the overall process took around 12 hours within the span of three days. I'm so slow 😂 But yes, all nice and fun, already on my way to draft a new fanart.
Stay tuned

2022 Candy Year In Review
As a way to cap off the year, I thought it would be nice to go over all the LLD candy from 2022! There were a ton of little ones (read: kadians, matching clothing, possible hickies, sunset photos, etc.), so this will just be focusing on the larger notable ones. They’re all dated and in chronological order, because I’m me.
Remember to take these with a grain of salt. Enjoy~
Tumblr media
January 23rd → Gong Jun’s studio Weibo posted his 2021 year in review video, completely leaving out August despite him having had two livestreams, a song release, and a reality show air during that month.
youtube
January 29th → Gong Jun posted a commercial for KFC to his Douyin where he rips dates off a calender that has 1 and 5 missing. (No one talks about this one but it’s one of my favourites. 🥺💕)
February 14th → Gong Jun posted a commercial to his Weibo at 11:29, then posted two photos of himself to Weibo at 13:14 (kadian for “forever”), then posted the same to his Instagram at 13:15, using the kadians to make the sequence “Gong Jun forever Zhang Zhehan”. The photos had been taken at Xiao Yu Hill in Qingdao at almost the exact location that Zhehan had taken photos at in 2018.
His Weibo post had the caption “Happy Valentine’s Day [11 husky emojis]”, the same caption he had used in 2021. Some people noted that “Zhang Zhehan” is eleven letters long, and interpreted the use of the same caption as a way of saying that nothing has changed.
Tumblr media
March 5 → Gong Jun posted a vlog with Nancy Mulligan by Ed Sheeran as one of the BGM, a song about a couple eloping during the Northern Ireland conflict. Fans found that one of the top comments on the song on Netease is “When China allows homosexuals to get married, I will play this song at our wedding,” and the song has widely been adopted by the gay community for its message of marrying and growing old together despite societal rules.
April 26th → (Purely rumor, take with a full spoon of salt.) Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan were supposedly seen together at the entrance to the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Beijing. Reportedly they saw someone take photos and Zhehan stepped forward to pay the person off, only for Gong Jun to stop him and say to the photographer, “Do whatever you want.” The following day was Zhehan’s lunar birthday.
May 6th → (Instagram cw) Guo Yunfei, the casting director and actor of Duan Pengju from Word of Honor, posted a photo of himself making the LLD handsign with the caption, “I hope the ‘waves’ (浪花, langhua) like it. I know what happened recently, but what can I say or do? … I hope everyone can be sincere and kind, have a safe future, and live up to your friendship.” This was the day after the Instagram was deactivated.
May 11th → Zhehan’s birthday. The post count on Gong Jun’s Weibo went up by two despite nothing new appearing, indicating that he had posted privately.
May 17th → (Again, purely rumor.) Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan were supposedly seen together near Liangma Bridge in Beijing’s Chaoyang district. According to this one, Gong Jun asked the fans who photographed them to delete the photos and they willingly complied.
May 20th → Kangshifu released a mini-movie for 520 starring Gong Jun and an actress who looked strikingly like Zhang Zhehan, including a scene where she wore an outfit almost identical to one Zhehan wore during his 2021 birthday concert. The film included drawn illustrations of the two lead characters, one of which was found to have been directly traced from a photo of Zhehan from the Word of Honor concert. One of the lines included on the teasers leading up to the release was “I didn’t hide you away properly. It’s apparent in every drawing of mine.”
Tumblr media
May 23rd → Gong Jun posted photos from a photoshoot for L’Officiel magazine to his Weibo—completely innocuous until people discovered that the caption, “✈✈✈~ ”, auto-translated to “对对~ 我爱你~ (Yes yes~ I love you~)” in the international app. This was later confirmed to have been an intentional Easter egg. Interpret it as you will~
June 9th → Gong Jun posted cooking photos from when he had been visiting his family during the previous month. It was noticed that there was one more set of chopsticks than there should have been if it was only his family. As well, it can be seen that Gong Jun was cooking the cilantro separately from the rest of the dish—Zhehan is known to not like cilantro. June 9th is May 11th on the lunar calendar.
(There were so many little things throughout May and June, you could tell Gong Jun was giving Xie and co. the middle finger. A thread I made of all the ones I’m aware of can be found [here].)
August 1st → (slight knives in this one) BEAST posted an article to their WeChat about their Qixi product line, in which they included the lines “Remembering that we couldn’t spend the previous Qixi together as we were at different places I even secretly childishly cried, and was angry at him. He promised that he’ll give me a surprise next Qixi.” and “Love is separated by the mountains and seas / The mountains and seas can be flattened”. The latter was written on a banner Zhehan had recieved from a fan during the Word of Honor concert; Qixi 2021 was August 14th.
September 5th → VogueFilm released an interview Gong Jun had done with them where he talked about his morning routine, wherein he said, “If you have a problem with your knees, don’t do running, cycling, etc. Even though they seem easy, if you don’t master the technique well, it will actually affect your knees” Photos of his food included a jianbing, which a few weeks earlier he had said his “ahyi” made for him, as well as eggs prepared in a way unique to Jiangxi.
October 14th to 20th → Gong Jun stopped having an umbrella shield him from photographers while going to work and took full advantage of it by wearing clothing associated with Zhehan for the next several days. Details can be found in my post for that week, look for the 🍬 emojis.
November 2nd → During a livestream for Hsu Fu Chi, Gong Jun mentioned multiple of his other endorsements and at one point walked off set to grab his LockNLock thermos, which he then drank from on camera for exactly five seconds while the host was made to wait. On the same day, his studio posted a douyin with the song 隆里电丝 by 盛宇DamnShine, which includes the lines “Some people will become your friends / or your zhiji / Some people will fight with you to the end / as long as you're happy (开心就好)”
November 17th → A photo from 2021 that Gong Jun’s studio posted as part of his time train series included a blurred out red and blue smear that was possibly a photo from the Word of Honor concert being used as his phone’s wallpaper.
November 28th → Gong Jun posted a photo of a handwritten note saying that he wouldn’t be doing a birthday livestream the following day. Something that was possibly his hexagon ring appears to have been deliberately placed behind a glass of water in the photo.
Tumblr media
December 17th → Gong Jun posted travel photos from Yunnan, which included two photos of a figure from behind wearing a hoodie that completely covers his head. There is debate over whether this person was really Gong Jun, especially as the shoulders seem to match Zhang Zhehan’s stature.
What’s your own favourite candy from the year? If I didn’t include it here, please feel welcome to add it as a reply or reblog! 🍬🍬🍬

What are some of your fave cdramas that you would highly rec? I’m looking for something to watch and I would be grateful if you can share some. Thank you!!
Oh, thanks so much for this question, I love recommending cdramas haha!
LEGEND OF FEI [2020] Gotta start with the obvious, because I'll recommend this drama forever even to everyone who has started and can't get into it, I'll always be like, please try again lol It's feminist, fun, feel-good but with very nicely done heavy moments every few episodes, important messages about life and about becoming who you want to be, it has my, at this point, favorite cdrama ship ever, yunfei my beloved!! relationship goals! friendships, funny dynamics, siblings, AMAZING characters and...so much more, I won't continue because I'll never stop lmao
UNEXPECTED [2018] Such an underrated Drama! I don't know why it's so underrated, especially because it's made by the same writer as a very popular drama (The Romance of Tiger and Rose) and the stories are very similar, which I know can be boring but they also have differences that make each drama unique, there's just the same premise of a writer traveling into their own story.
I'VE FALLEN FOR YOU [2020] The perfect rom-com historical drama, with a very fun plot and with plot twists you don't expect, such good characters and two amazing ships! Comfort drama for sure!
THE LOVE BY HYPNOTIC [2019] If you love palace romance, arranged marriage turned true love, a few crazy (but very entertaining) villains and a love story for the ages! Even though it has some very heavy moments, it's one of my comfort dramas as well, because it also includes some VERY FUNNY moments, like I just love dramas that can somehow balance comedy, romance and serious moments so well!
THE QUEEN OF ATTACK [2021] There's so many short dramas nowadays and 80% of them have the same plot of someone traveling into a story lol and yes, this is one of them BUT it's such a good drama like it's insane, I'll wish forever it was a normal length one, but it's still so good, the episodes are 9-10 mins each but there are two seasons, and the episodes have been combined, so eventually it's like having a normal drama with 12 normal length episodes (6 for s1 and 6 for s2). It's so worth it and the two actors are so talented and have such good chemistry, plus the story is unique too, yes this premise has been done many times but I think they still made it so unique and different from others.
THE STARRY LOVE [2023] A recent drama and quite popular, but I'll still recommend it always. Other than the last episode that was a bit disappointing and rushed (still a happy-ish ending though), it's my favorite Xianxia and it was just so good, the story, the cinematography, THE OST, the actors, the ships, the friendships, the sisters, ALL THE WOMEN, youqin literally making all other MLs take notes from him on how to be the best ml out there, so many reasons to watch this drama, just ignore the last part and pretend we saw what they forgot to show us lol
LOVE LIKE THE GALAXY [2022] Where do I even begin??? (This is the first Zhao Lusi drama i recommend in this list, but I just wanna mention, I recommend almost all of them.) Anyway, LLTG is by far my favorite political drama, and non wuxia/xianxia historical cdrama. It's so different and unique, there's literally nothing like it. It's a slow paced drama, with very long scenes (you might only have 3-4 scenes in one episode for example) and it's the reason why It got me a while to get to it, but now I'M SO IN LOVE WITH IT!!! There is not an episode I don't enjoy, it's pure art. Cheng Shao Shang is one of my favorite girls ever and her and Ling Buyi???? I'D DIE FOR THEIR LOVE. Their chemistry is so so so good, now Zhao Lusi can have chemistry with a tree, it's true but still, one of the best cdrama ships out there. Even though I never truly watched classic cdramas like Nirvana on Fire and those "older" ones, I think LLTG somehow is the closest to those except it also loves its characters and focuses on romance more than any older political cdrama did but it works so so well.
LIGHTER AND PRINCESS [2022] Favorite modern drama! I gotta be honest I'm not verrrryyyy into modern cdramas, I like a few, even love some, but generally it's hard to find a modern cdrama I'll go crazy over...but L&P changed that. Or well, it's still hard, maybe even harder now, to find something that tops it, but L&P is just so so good. Again, a quite popular drama, maybe it doesn't need the recommendation, but I have to mention it anyway 'cause it's my baby and I just cannot make a favorite cdramas list without it! Some reasons to watch: One of the best love stories out there, with such good angst and just everything you need on a ship, two main characters so unique that you'll definitely relate to (at least in some aspects), one of the best OSTS ever, perfect cinematography, directing and writing and one of my favorite endings on any show ever!
Some more dramas I recommend but I won't dig deeper (I talked a lot already):
Couple of Mirrors [2021]
Who Rules The World [2022]
Love Between Fairy and Devil [2022]
Young Blood [2019 - S2 starts tomorrow!]
Wait, My Youth [2019]
Zhaoyao/The Legends [2019]
Arsenal Military Academy [2019]
There's probably more but I think that's good for now, I hope I helped you find something to watch and I'm always here for more recs if you want :P <3

Finally finished watching Mysterious Lotus Casebook.
It's a good wuxia drama in itself and as someone who has read the novel, the drama also managed to bring out the spirit of the novel who is the man himself Li Lian Hua and his long goodbye to jianghu. Because he once shone so brightly and proudly, it was incomprehensible to those that love and hate him that he would be content with not having it all, even to the point of death.
Tumblr media
I really feel for LLH because those around him - from friends to enemies! - insist on seeing him as Li Xiang Yi and continues to put their expectations of LXY on him. LLH keeps repeating himself over and over, but ultimately it seemed that only Zhan Yunfei truly understood and accepted Li Lian Hua.
有些人弃剑如遗 有些人终身不负 人的信念终是有不同的
LLH's tragedy is not in his death, but in those around him refusing to understand that we have different paths in life and choosing one over the other at different points in your life is perfectly fine.
Tumblr media
If ZYF represented acceptance of LLH's choices, then Fang Duo Bing is the ultimate manifestation of rejection of LLH's wishes. I was SO frustrated with him throughout the drama arggg. While I can't recall how FDB was exactly like in the novel, he was definitely not like the drama and I have no idea what possessed the scriptwriter to turn him into this sulky, needy young girlfriend to LLH. Couldn't they have just gone for the master/student dynamic minus the neediness? I want to tear my hair out every time FDB professes to be LLH's 知己 zhi ji … hold up, I don't think you know the meaning of the words you are saying. Student yes, friend maybe, but zhi ji you are most definitely not. I find FDB constantly demanding LLH behave a certain way because a) FDB determines it's the 'correct' way b) LLH should reciprocate the friendship the way FDB wants.
Heck, even FDB's mom has a better understanding of LLH as evidenced by what she told him before LLH left for the palace. I mean, I get it, FDB is much younger and sees the world in a black and white manner. But still, even to the last freaking episode after everything that he has seen LLH gone through, he was like noooo, you stay here, I will find the antidote, I will cure you blah blah blah. Sure it's human nature to want your loved ones to not-die, but if FDB had even bothered really to hear LLH out and try to accept LLH's choices, I would have been less annoyed with him.
Like what kind of reasoning is this??? 拜托不要再情勒! Why does LLH owe FDB or anyone for that matter to stay alive? Look, LLH is not actively looking to off himself but he has made peace with himself/his impending demise over the last 10 years. The world wouldn't let go of LXY and let LLH have his peace.

Recent Reads : November 📚
Tumblr media
This is not gonna be a monthly thing. I just wanted to post it and i don’t know how much i’m gonna be able to read this December cause it’s a busy month. I’m thinking of picking up Qiang Jin Jiu and it’s a pretty long and heavy novel so it might take me the whole month. who knows if I’m gonna pick up a short novel in between. If you have any recs based on what I share below, please let me know. Oh, and I also wanna try Fake Slackers.
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
• First Class Lawyer - NU Link | English Translation
An example of a novel I picked up once and dropped cause i wasn’t in the right headspace. Also at the time it was not completed so I thought to just wait. You can really go back to other stories and give it another try, it’s not always the novel’s fault and i’m happy that I decided to go back and read it. This is such a special story, my first Mu Su Li novel which is from what I understand a popular author ( yes I did read Global Examination but the Manhua ). I’ve always been a fan of scifi stories and settings that touch upon interstellar living. This is really not heavy on technical terms or boring— which is an easy presumption because of the whole “lawyer” thing. There is a good balance between the plot and relationship between the characters.
Tumblr media
I adore the dynamic between the MC & ML and i don’t think there is an imbalance at all despite the whole teacher-student setting. if you read the summary of it, you’ll understand there is a twist to it. The ML ( Gu Yan ) is well written too and not flat even if his personality is supposed to be aloof. My favorite trope here tho is how the MC is changed and healed ( in a way ) by the love between him and the ML. It may seem cliche but i like the thought of people living a fuller life because they have someone to share it with. Also Gu Yan’s feelings for Yan Sizhui is so pure i just 😭😭😭
• After I Possessed the Tmall Genie of the School Grass - NU Link | English Translation
I was browsing through some school themed novels because i enjoyed the moon is coming to me novel and this came up. I don’t know why i’m in a school tropes kick for the month but I truly enjoy it. The title sounds like it’s gonna be an absurd story but i was so wrong. T-mall genie is like google home or alexa, where you can ask it do stuff. I thought this will focus on the fantasy aspect but it was so much more based on reality. The “possession” was just a plot device for the MC to get to know the life of the ML that not everyone is privy too.
Lu Yunfei’s hate for the english subject is so hilarious 😂😂😂 and I like the side characters/ friends. The star of the story tho is the ML, Bian Jinyuan. The top student who has to work multiple jobs and has secrets of his own. I feel for Bian Bian because I know how hard it is to work for your education. He is so smart but he is in danger of not finishing school because his family can’t afford it. I love these kids! I don’t think it’s possible to read this and not root for them. This story is really charming. It’s not trying to be something it’s not. It’s about overcoming your prejudice towards people and finding common ground. Strangers/Enemies to Friends to Lovers tropes at it’s finest. Plus it’s super short, only 80 chapters. It’s the perfect weekend read if you wanna be cozy and have no plans to go out— give this a try.
• My Underachieving Seatmate Doesn't Need Any Comforting - NU Link | English Translation
Another high school setting but with tears. Please read the tags over at NU in case you don’t like some topics on your novel and only want fluffy ones. A short story at 120 ( with extras ) and is a solid novel. There is hidden identity trope that causes funny misunderstandings and it’s so sweet how they wanna save each other from their “unfortunate” circumstance. It’s about trying to live a normal life after traumatic things happened to you. A hopeful story, that it’s gonna be a long road to recovery and there will be people helping you along the way.
Tumblr media
The romance aspect is so lovely but I like how the author included friends and family in making the MC/ML be a better version of themselves. Usually it’s all about the romantic relationship in novels like this so it is refreshing to read about how important it is to have a good support system and not just you & me against the world. Qiao Shao ( MC ) is really the best boy. I sometimes wanna cry because of how hard he wants to try and get better for the people around him. Seeing his transformation from Chapter 1 to the end is so rewarding. The ML ( He Shen ) is one of favorite characters now. He is a gremlin towards the MC and then cold towards everyone else. The way he dotes on the MC is so sweet too 🤍 Definitely a story I will be thinking about from time to time and will re-read.
That’s all for the Month and I enjoyed it all! I can hopefully apply the trend of one long novel and 1 or 2 shorts ones moving forward but who knows. I still have a lot of stories to get to. ✌🏼

hello, legend of fei anon again! losing my mind at zhou fei doing all this cool stuff so that xie yun won't die!! when she went up the mountain and worked with vermilion master and tricked the wolf of disha!! and their reunion was very sweet. also I love xie yun's guardians at penglai lmaoo when they were like "wow anzhi has a good eye, this girl is loving and righteous. how did he get her??" ALSO I love the "single braincell trio" of li yan and yang jin and ying hecong, they make me laugh so much. and chuchu continues to be the smartest sweetest bravest girl, I LOVE how she's documenting all the sect's styles, and she literally never gives up or lets anyone intimidate her, even when she gets kidnapped. to be honest I would have preferred zhou fei and chuchu as a couple but yunfei is good too, they make me think of those posts where a man is sitting in a woman's lap or being pinned to the wall or being carried and it's like "bisexual men dating bisexual women" lol
hello!!! ngl i’m always looking forward to your messages and hearing your thoughts on the show kinda makes me wanna rewatch it again 😩 ahh yes she keeps growing so much during those journeys and I love seeing her get more confident in her own abilities! also ahh I love her budding friendship with vermillion bird they’re cute together!!
ndjdndn please I love that xie yun has like 15 dads that all care about him and roast him, good for him <3
yesss the one brain cell trio is one of my absolute favourite dynamics in the whole show they’re just so fun and good together!! and yeah chuchu is such a boss!!! instead of giving up and withdrawing when she lost her whole family she just keeps growing as a character and what she does is so amazing
that last comment scream nsjsks you’re so correct about that, that’s really them!! I think chuchu should’ve joined them actually they could’ve been the 3 brain cell trio and chuchu would possess all of them <3

Heavily annoyed with the part of the MDZS fandom that has issues with the leading women (and their characters) working alongside Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo in other projects.
No, Legend of Fei isn't gay. That does not mean it's allowed for you to go around and act like "hmmm not gay, don't like, don't even have chemistry, boring het ship, wang yibo uwu tho, zanilia zhao who??". Just because it's not gay doesn't mean that you can go around actively denouncing feminist works - because that's what Legend of Fei is, it's a piece of feminist work and women's growth. Furthermore, zanilia zhao and wang yibo did an incredible work on this show and you're just being plain disrespectful. And even if we're talking about other projects of the MDZS leads that are not as feminist, actively ignoring the existence of the female leads is generally just disgusting. (Yes, I'm talking about each and everyone of you who tags my Yunfei edits with "#wang yibo" but forgets to add a tag for the female lead - I see you and I don't like what I'm seeing.) Constructive criticism is always allowed, but seeing people on here actively trying to dismiss the importance and beauty of Legend of Fei is, inherently, not because it's not gay enough but because some of you hate women. It's inherent misogyny, and you should all realize it. Legend of Fei just being an example here.

lof!
lof!!! yes!!
My rating (1-10): i feel bad giving this show a 7 but it truly is a 7. it's a very good solid 7 though and very dear to my heart. im being generous here bc if i wasn’t so attached it’d probably be a 6 lmao the writing just doesn't make sense, the plot is too dragged out, the pacing is really weird, there are too many characters and the camerawork and editing is really shoddy at times. the strength of this show really lies in its main characters & the romance and the fight scenes.
My favourite character: xie yun, zhou fei, yang jin and madam nichang
My least favourite character: im sorry 3rd prince chen zichen but you suck. yin pei as well
The character I think I'd be friends with: yang jin, wu chuchu, and xie yun. unfortunately i do not think zhou fei would be friends with me........ maybe she'll warm up to me with time. oh fuck mu xiaoqiao!!!
The character I think I won't hit off with: li sheng.... he's too straight
My favourite episode/scene: the scene at the inn where they first meet the azure dragon master and yin pei and the blade master/cook whose name i forgot, there's a lot of great banter in that scene, the couple of episodes where they're at the feather robe troupe, the one braincell trio (yang jin, ying hecong, and li yan) going off to find that one ingredient for xie yun in the toxic forest together, honestly any romantic yunfei scene...
Whose clothing style I like best: yang jin!!
Times I watched it (and if I would again): twice, and sure i would watch it again in the future, not for a while though

Ava and Lala (2014)
Format: CGI animated movie.
Director: Yunfei Wang.
Writers: Yunfei Wang and Michael Shear (who wrote the English adaptation of the original Chinese script).
Is J.K. Simmons in this? Yes, although I’m not quite sure why? I mean, this is after Whiplash came out. He didn’t need to take this kind of job.
Who does he portray? He provides the voice of the Tiger General, the film’s main antagonist. J.K. Simmons sure does enjoy providing the voices of anthropomorphic animals. I may have to start compiling stats on this, make a chart or something.
What does he do? He talks about how much he wants the power of the Nine Herds, which he plans to use to wipe out human life.
How bald is he? Not at all, he has a full coat of fur.
Wait, is that why J.K. Simmons took this job? Is he a furry? Tweet at me with the hashtag #IsJKSimmonsAFurry with your thoughts.
Is anybody else in this? Yes, but I don’t harbour suspicions about any of them being furries, so I don’t particularly care.
Is it worth seeing if I’m not a J.K. Simmons completist? Oh, no. The animation makes the characters come across as wooden, the lead character is unsympathetic, and the story is really disjointed and can’t seem to decide what it wants to be about. So no, do not recommend.
I mean, unless you’re a furry. Then you might like it. I’m not a furry, so I can’t speak to that.

Mischievous Princess (Diao Man Gong Zhu) (2006)
Tumblr media
This is going to be a long post so the long and short of it is this: Do I recommend this show to everyone? Nope, because one would need a lot of patience to watch it. But do I love it? Hell yeah.
Mischievous Princess (or the Bratty Princess, but that sounds like shit) is a story about Situ Jing--a military general’s daughter who loves to sneak out of their household under the guise of a male and with the assumed name “Xiao Long Xia”. She has a knack of getting into trouble, and along the way she befriends and becomes a “sworn brother” of two equally honorable but secretive individuals--later revealed to be Bai Yunfei (son of a feudal lord) and the Emperor himself. With these three characters come an array of problems as they become embroiled in political intrigues, power games, assassination attempts, and manipulations from the shadows--all against the background of a looming rebellion that threatens the stability of the empire.
When people ask me about this show, I always put out a long-ass disclaimer about it. That’s because it’s a show of extremes--extremely bad aspects and extremely good aspects. When I say bad aspects, we have to put into context the fact that it was created in 2005/2006. And while that doesn’t wholly justify some of the bad things, I feel like it helps put things into perspective. So with that, let’s start with the bad things.
My number one complaint is the costume. It borders atrocious. This is supposed to be a period drama so why the hell is Princess An Ning (the Emperor’s sister and Bai Yunfei’s fiancee) wearing a midriff? Wen Mei’er’s (Emperor’s cousin and concubine) and Situ Jing’s costumes were also a bit...bizarre. Aside from those individuals, the rest of the costumes were okay--pretty good even. I especially like the Emperor and the Emperor-dowager’s costumes best (and also that one “formal” dress of An Ning--it’s gorgeous!)
Costumes aside, some of the lines of the characters were a bit off and the editing is not really as polished (I mean there’s no need to zoom in on each character’s face in every scene). The kung fu is...pretty dismal, and the acting of some of the characters were a bit stiff. I’m also not a fan of slapstick humor in the drama or slapstick humor in general, but I recognize that this kind of humor is probably a norm for dramas during that time (mid-2000s).
With all these, what could possibly be the redeeming quality of this drama? Two things. First, the story. Now I’m a person who absolutely loves political intrigues and machinations in fiction, and boy is this drama full of it. And at the center of the political whirlpool is the second redeeming factor of the drama: the characters, particularly the Emperor.
I fell in love with the character of the Emperor (Emperor Zhu Yun as he was named, but mostly he was referred to in the show as the Emperor because, you know, deference). He is compassionate and he genuinely cares for his people, but his shining quality is without a doubt his brilliance. He is exceedingly cunning and calculative--always one step ahead of his enemies both inside and outside the palace court. And he is a master of the power game--able to manipulate things and just about anyone to achieve his desired results. One particular line from Chen Lin (bodyguard of the Emperor) sums it up: “the Emperor is the most intelligent person in the world. Those who oppose him shall die a horrible death.” (Man do I love that line.)
I’m not kidding when I say almost all of the problems and seemingly impossible situations that the lead characters got themselves into were all resolved by the Emperor using his wit and genius--and I tell you it’s always a pleasure to watch him use it. Even his enemies give him their begrudging respect because of it. Alec Su masterfully portrayed the Emperor and his every scene is really just a joy to watch.
Situ Jing, played by Jang Nara, was also a good character overall (although there was one point in the story where she irked me to high heavens. Looking back, however, I kind of understand her now.) Some aspects of her character arc were not very well polished, but I can forgive that. I deeply appreciate the fact that she remained true to her character throughout the series; her headstrong, uncompromising attitude as well as her clever ways with things never really wavered. Her chemistry with the Emperor is I think very good, and cliche as it may be, they really are a perfect match; Situ Jing being one of the only characters that can match the Emperor with cleverness. I also deeply, deeply appreciate the fact that she maintained her own agency throughout the show and didn’t just relegate to a girl fawning over the lead boy (which is really a pet peeve of mine with some of the shows that I’ve watched—after realizing their love for each other, the lead girl falls into the role of just fawning over the lead boy. Ugh. Yes, looking at you still, My Love from the Stars.) She is part of the narrative and she moves in it as an active player, never in a passing role.
Bai Yunfei’s character was the least memorable of the three leads, but I guess we could say he’s an okay character. I love those times though when he played mind games with the Emperor, which highlights the fact that he’s brilliant as well and can play that game, although he admitted that he’s nowhere near as masterful as the Emperor.
Onto other aspects, I actually like the use of the soundtrack (background music) in this drama especially during its tense moments. There were some grating tracks though, like the one they repeatedly use during cheesy moments. The opening song also just bops.
So there you have it--the good and the bad. This show is really a guilty pleasure of mine to be honest. It has mixed-ish reviews, and again, I’m not blind to its glaring faults. But I just love it and appreciate it all the same. I can actually say that although the show was made more than a decade ago, its story is better and far more memorable than some of the more modern and recent dramas that I’ve watched.
