Warriors Orochi: The Recollective Redux Part 6.1: Orochi Story A
The Orochi story was extended to have the Orochi Army subjugate all factions. This story begins after Da Ji frees Orochi from his prison on the Wuhang Mountains (scenario can be played in Dream Mode).
Initial characters: Orochi, Da Ji, Dong Zhuo
Chapter 1: Battle of Odawara Castle 小田原城の戦い (uses SW2 west map)
Orochi Army vs. Hōjō-Toyotomi Army Allied characters: Orochi, Da Ji Enemy characters: Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Ujimasa Hōjō, Nene, Keiji Maeda, Kotarō Fūma, Hanbei Takenaka, Kanbei Kuroda, Masanori Fukushima, Kiyomasa Katō, Ujiyasu Hōjō, Kai, Lady Hayakawa, Yoshimoto Imagawa
Unlocked characters: Keiji Maeda, Kotarō Fūma
After being broken out from the mystic realm by Da Ji, Orochi used his demonic powers to warp time and space, creating a world where they would fight the bravest warriors of China and Japan. Dong Zhuo encounters them and decides to join them, seeing that they can help him create his world of paradise.
Hanbei Takenaka replaces Teruzumi Akashi in this stage.
Masanori Fukushima and Kiyomasa Katō appear inside Odawara Castle alongside Nene’s ninja unit when the Orochi Army enters the castle.
After Ujimasa and Hideyoshi are defeated, Ujiyasu Hōjō, Kai, Lady Hayakawa and Yoshimoto Imagawa will appear in the central garrison at Mt Ishigaki and charge the main camp. Defeat Ujiyasu and Yoshimoto to win the battle.
Chapter 2: Battle of Xiapi Castle 下邳城の戦い (uses DW8XL map)
Orochi Army and Himiko Troop vs. Lu Bu Coalition Allied characters: Da Ji, Dong Zhuo, Diamondback Third-party characters: Himiko Enemy characters: Lu Bu, Diaochan, Chen Gong, Lu Lingqi, Zhang Yan, Yuan Shu, Gongsun Zan, Jia Xu, Tao Qian, Liu Yao, Zhang Xiu
Unlocked characters: Lu Bu, Diaochan, Chen Gong, Lu Lingqi, Jia Xu, Himiko
Upon discovering that all the lands were taken in the chaos caused by Orochi, numerous regional lords of China banded under Lu Bu at Xiapi Castle. They knew that it would be worthless fighting Orochi themselves, so they hoped that Lu Bu would be able to protect them.
Da Ji and Dong Zhuo arrive at the northwest of the battlefield. One of Da Ji’s soldiers spots a girl with mystical powers trapped in the southwestern garrison while Dong Zhuo’s soldiers find a floodgate to the northeast, which they can use to decimate Lu Bu’s forces.
Da Ji and Dong Zhuo set about their tasks. Da Ji heads to the southwestern garrison is isolated by Zhang Lu sealing the gates to the garrison. Zhang Lu knew that Da Ji was a sorcerer and he used the girl as bait due to her magical powers. Because Zhang Lu neutralised the girl’s powers, she has been weakened, unable to use her powers to save herself. Zhang Lu sends in phantom soldiers and sorcerers to attack Da Ji and the girl, who introduces herself as Himiko. Assist Da Ji by opening the gates into the garrison (if outside) and defeating the sorcerers which will make the phantom soldiers disappear. Zhang Lu will appear with his own troops to attack Da Ji. Defeat him to recover Himiko’s powers.
Dong Zhuo heads east and heads past the north side of the castle to the floodgates. Chen Gong would know that Dong Zhuo would head for the floodgates, so ambush units led by Yuan Shu and Gongsun Zan will attack him. Defeat the ambush units to open the floodgates and flood Xiapi Castle.
With the castle flooded, Dong Zhuo will send out bridgelayers and siege ramps to allow the Orochi Army to enter the castle. Da Ji suggests to Dong Zhuo that they set parts of the castle (the armory and supply depot) on fire. Himiko teleports into Xiapi Castle and engages Lu Bu’s forces while Dong Zhuo’s officers head to execute the fire attacks.
Regardless of whether the fire attacks are successful or not, Jia Xu will arrive with Tao Qian, Liu Yao and Zhang Xiu from the south and east. Lu Bu and his officers will be captured upon their defeat. Defeat Lu Bu and Jia Xu to win the battle.
Lu Bu is angered at the prospect of being captured by Dong Zhuo, to which Dong Zhuo says that he won’t kill him if he joins the Orochi Army. Da Ji also mentions that her lord Orochi is looking for worthy opponents from all over the land to fight; since Lu Bu is also interested in fighting worthy opponents, he decides to join them. Jia Xu decides to surrender to the Orochi Army while Himiko joins Da Ji as her personal companion.
Chapter 3: Battle of Chengdu 成都の戦い
Orochi Army vs. Shu Army Allied characters: Orochi, Kotarō Fūma Enemy characters: Liu Bei, Zhao Yun, Zhuge Liang, Yueying, Guan Xing, Zhang Bao, Fa Zheng, Guan Suo, Bao Sanniang, Meng Huo, Zhurong
Unlocked characters: Zhuge Liang, Guan Xing, Guan Suo, Fa Zheng
The Orochi Army’s next conquest was the land of Shu, specifically the city of Chengdu, remarked by their scouts as empty and insignificant.
With this game adapting characters from Dynasty Warriors 8 and Samurai Warriors 4, some generic officers are upgraded to playable characters where appropriate.
Bao Sanniang appears alongside Guan Suo just outside the western gate of Luo Castle. Fa Zheng appears at the north gate of Chengdu Castle, staying behind when Liu Bei escapes with Zhao Yun and Yang Yi. Yueying appears with Zhuge Liang in the inner sanctum of the castle.
Unlike the original version, the north gate of Chengdu Castle will be closed and will not open until all enemy officers inside are defeated. The central gate will remain locked, as with the northern gate of Luo Castle.
Liu Bei is captured and Zhuge Liang, along with a number of Shu officers, are forced to serve Orochi. Zhuge Liang mentions that there are other officers who will surely come to rescue Liu Bei and that this will provide great opportunities to neutralise them.
Chapter 4: Battle of Mt. Shigi Castle 信貴山城の戦い (uses SW4 map)
Orochi Army vs. Miyoshi Coalition Allied characters: Orochi, Lu Bu, Chen Gong, Jia Xu Enemy characters: Hisahide Matsunaga, Munenori Yagyū, Goemon Ishikawa, Nagayasu Miyoshi, Masayasu Miyoshi, Tomomichi Iwanari, Yoshikata Rokkaku, Masamoto Kodera
Unlocked characters: Hisahide Matsunaga, Munenori Yagyū
Orochi’s army arrive in Kii Province, under the hands of Hisahide Matsunaga and the Miyoshi. The Rokkaku and Kodera clans also gather in the area to stop Orochi.
Starting in the southwest, Chen Gong and Jia Xu work together to claim Mt. Shigi Castle. After an initial attack from the west, an explosion caused by Goemon Ishikawa blocks their path to the castle. After breaking through the Rokkaku troops in the centre, Hisahide sets the area on fire. Jia Xu and Chen Gong find the troops who are responsible for the fire and capture them to set another fire attack to the northeast of the battlefield. Chen Gong sets the fire while Jia Xu clears the western path to the northern garrison to allow access.
Entering Mt. Shigi Castle, Munenori Yagyū will defend the entrance to the keep. Upon defeating him and entering the keep, Hisahide sets off the explosives contained in the teapots set around the walls of the castle, causing another fire. Despite this, Hisahide Matsunaga is defeated.
Goemon Ishikawa escapes the battlefield while Hisahide and Munenori surrender to Orochi.
Chapter 5: Battle of Kawanakajima 川中島の戦い
Orochi Army vs. Takeda-Uesugi Army Allied characters: Orochi, Dong Zhuo, Keiji Maeda Enemy characters: Shingen Takeda, Kenshin Uesugi, Yukimura Sanada, Nobuyuki Sanada, Kanetsugu Naoe, Kagekatsu Uesugi, Aya, Kunoichi
Knowing of the threat posed by the Orochi Army, Shinken Takeda and Kenshin Uesugi form an alliance and set their camps at Kawanakajima. The Orochi Army are split into two groups, with Dong Zhuo and the main army in the northeast (at Mt Saijō) and Keiji Maeda in the southeast.
Aya will be with Kenshin in the northwestern garrison (Kaizu Castle). Kagekatsu is with Kanetsugu in the western garrison; his original place in the north of the battlefield is replaced by a generic officer.
Nobuyuki Sanada replaces Nobutsuna next to Yukimura in the southeast. Kunoichi appears with the Takeda ambush units upon entering the Stone Sentinel Maze.
Chapter 6: Battle of Jiange 剣閣の戦い (uses DW8 Hanzhong map)
Orochi Army and Kiyomori Troop vs. Shu Army Allied characters: Da Ji, Himiko, Dodomeki, Diaochan, Lu Lingqi, Zhuge Liang, Guan Xing, Fa Zheng Third-party characters: Kiyomori Taira Enemy characters: Liu Shan, Jiang Wei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Wei Yan, Pang Tong, Xu Shu, Guan Ping, Xingcai, Ma Dai, Guan Yinping, Ma Chao, Huang Zhong, Liu Biao, Liu Zhang
Unlocked characters: Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Liu Shan, Kiyomori Taira
Just as Zhuge Liang predicted before, the remaining Shu officers are forming a stand against Orochi in Jiange. Liu Shan and Jiang Wei are at the northeast with the more veteran officers while the younger officers are stationed at their main camp beneath the mountaintop (where Mt. Dingjun is in DW8). Da Ji and Zhuge Liang set up camp in the southwestern garrison within the forest caves. Receiving report that the Orochi Army have set up camp, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei charge towards the Shu camp to attack Zhuge Liang and Da Ji, hoping to have their brother Liu Bei freed from capture. They are defeated and they retreat soon after.
Upon reaching the southern garrison, Orochi Army scouts have found a mysterious grave on the mountaintop (Mt. Tiandang in DW8). At the same time, Pang Tong and Xu Shu begin their plan by sending wave after wave of officers to attack the Orochi Army. Zhuge Liang implements stage one of his plan by having Diaochan and Lu Lingqi lure the enemy frontline to the centre and setting a fire attack, lowering the Shu forces’ morale. Pang Tong and Xu Shu fall back to work out what Zhuge Liang could be planning next.
Zhuge Liang prepares the second part of the plan in preparation of a pincer attack on Liu Shan and Jiang Wei. He sends Himiko, Diaochan and Lu Lingqi to wait in the east while he goes with Da Ji and Guan Xing to the mountaintop. Dodomeki will defend the southern garrison in their absence. Jiang Wei predicted Zhuge Liang’s plan and he sends out units to counterattack.
Pang Tong reappears on the mountain with reinforcements from the Nanman (not Meng Huo however). Xu Shu also reappears to the east, suspecting that Zhuge Liang is trying to ambush their main camp. He attacks Diaochan and Lu Lingqi, but Xu Shu is defeated and he retreats for a second time. Back to the west, Da Ji, Zhuge Liang and the others defeat Wei Yan and Xingcai on their way to the summit. Wei Yan and Xingcai retreat to the northeast and the main camp respectively. Xingcai warns Guan Ping and the others at the camp to strengthen their defences for Zhuge Liang’s assault. Zhuge Liang defeats Pang Tong and the Nanman reinforcements, claiming the mountaintop for the Orochi Army. Pang Tong retreats again.
On the mountaintop, Da Ji discovers the grave of Kiyomori Taira, who was said to have died somewhere else in a duel (against Yoshitsune Minamoto). Magically digging up his body, Da Ji wonders what it would be like if Kiyomori could rampage against the Shu Army. Da Ji and Himiko resurrect Kiyomori into a half-human, half-demon after Kiyomori agrees to sell his soul to the Orochi Army.
Once Kiyomori is resurrected, he charges down into the Shu main camp and unleashes his newfound demonic power against the young Shu officers. Zhuge Liang, Da Ji and the others follow Kiyomori into the battlefield. The entire Shu Army goes into a panic, with masses of Shu soldiers fleeing the battlefield. Jiang Wei gathers the rest of the Shu Army and charges towards their main camp.
Himiko, Diaochan and Lu Lingqi set fire to the Shu main camp and ambush it. Guan Yu and Zhang Fei reappear again to tell Liu Shan to escape. Pang Tong and Xu Shu assist him, taking a break mid-way.
Back on Mt. Dingjun, the Orochi Army with the help of Kiyomori eliminate the majority of the Shu Army, with many officers captured. Zhuge Liang heads to where Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are fighting and announces to them that their children have been captured and will be spared, along with Liu Bei, if they immediately surrender.
Following Guan Yu and Zhang Fei’s surrender, Jiang Wei joins Liu Shan and the others in his escape. Zhuge Liang chases them to the escape point (east of the southern garrison) and after being intercepted by Orochi Army officers, Liu Shan and the others put up a fight before Liu Shan is captured.
In the aftermath, Ma Chao, Huang Zhong, Guan Ping, Xingcai, Ma Dai, Wei Yan, Guan Yinping, Jiang Wei, Pang Tong and Xu Shu have evaded capture. Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Liu Shan are forced to work in Orochi’s army.
Chapter 7: Battle of Shangyong 上庸の戦い (uses DW8XL map)
Orochi Army and Sun Wukong Troop vs. Jin Army Allied characters: Kiyomori Taira, Dong Zhuo, Lu Bu, Gyūki, Chen Gong, Jia Xu Third-party characters: Sun Wukong Enemy characters: Sima Yi, Sima Shi, Sima Zhao, Deng Ai, Zhong Hui, Wang Yuanji, Zhuge Dan, Xiahou Ba, Guo Huai, Jia Chong, Wen Yang, Zhang Chunhua
Unlocked characters: Sun Wukong, Sima Yi, Sima Shi, Sima Zhao, Wang Yuanji, Zhang Chunhua
With the surrender of the entire Shu Army to the Orochi Army, the entire land was determined to fight, but were scared to because of the Orochi Army’s immense power. Knowing of the danger the Orochi Army would pose against Wei, Sima Yi decided to engage them by gathering his army in Shangyong. In response, Dong Zhuo and Lu Bu set to the battlefield with Kiyomori Taira.
Starting from the northeast, the Orochi Army are ordered to occupy Shangyong Castle. On the way, Kiyomori spots a mysterious boulder (at the northmost part of the battlefield) where Sun Wukong is squashed under it, having been put there by the Mystics for failing to prevent Orochi’s release. Kiyomori offers him freedom in exchange for servitude under his wing; Wukong accepts and Kiyomori frees him as they continue to Shangyong Castle.
After defeating Xiahou Ba and Guo Huai, Shangyong Castle is set on fire and ambush units attack from the path leading to the northwest. Once the ambush units are defeated, Kiyomori will send sorcerers through the northwest path to unleash poison gas on Sima Zhao’s camp while Chen Gong and Jia Xu hold the Jin Army back. Defend the sorcerers as they head to the strategic point, then once the poison gas is unleashed, defeat Sima Zhao and his army.
Sun Wukong will then summon clones of himself in Sima Yi and Sima Shi’s camps, forcing them to advance their armies to Shangyong Castle, with Xiahou Ba and Guo Huai reappearing as well. Defeat Sima Yi and Sima Shi to win the battle.
In the aftermath, Sima Yi happily surrenders to the Orochi Army, claiming that his intellect can surpass anyone else’s in the land. Sima Shi happily follows his father while Sima Zhao is uneasy about his father’s decision, a foreshadowing for the Jin stories.
Chapter 8: Battle of Hefei 合肥の戦い
Orochi Army vs. Wu Army Allied characters: Zhuge Liang, Guan Suo, Fa Zheng Enemy characters: Sun Jian, Zhou Yu, Ling Tong, Zhang Liao, Gan Ning, Guo Jia, Yue Jin, Li Dian, Yu Jin, Lu Su, Sun Ce, Daqiao, Han Dang
Unlocked characters: Sun Ce, Daqiao, Han Dang
Da Ji decided to have Zhuge Liang lead a mobile unit to quash the human resistance, which he agreed to and set off for Hefei to confront the Wu Army.
Li Dian and Yu Jin will appear with Zhang Liao and Gan Ning’s ambush unit.
Ding Feng and Lu Su are replaced by other generic officers.

The Chinapuri finale and its montage aka censorship who?
I decided to do all of this in one post and read more, so that the 95% of my followers who are uninterested on this particular drama/source material can easily skip it. Here are 7 relationships showcased in the montage ranked and 2 bonus (a family relationship and an extra).
Note: I’ll speak about the relationships as they were portrayed, whichever the form of relationship chosen to display in this version. Also, I’m glad that everyone was aged up in this version, kinda wild but very much appreciated that some of these actors are my age or somewhere around there lol
#7 Lu Xia (Echizen Ryoma) and Qi Ying (Ryuuzaki Sakuno)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This drama was a bit more romantically-inclined in terms of these two than the anime/manga was, but some of that may be also influenced by them giving their version of Sakuno more room (which yay!) and having them be older.
For this to stand alone as a drama, it was a needed step, I believe. I found Lu Xia to be more vulnerable than Ryoma, he doesn’t feel quite as ~cool~ and it doesn’t take away from the character that he has moments showing internal struggle (in tennis as well as at home). These two were sweet and adorable, which gave the drama probably more of an expected appeal for a wider audience, to make it stand on its own as a drama and not only an anime adaptation.
#6 Yan ZhiMing (Inui Sadaharu) & Liu Lian (Yanagi Renji)
Tumblr media
Kinda mad they didn’t do this for Fuji (Zhuo Zhi) and Saeki (Zuo Xiaohu) but they did good with these two. I didn’t know at first why they started to build up their relationship so early, but it ended up being a good emotional plot point during their match, which is, as we all know, a determining factor in Seigaku’s (Yu Qing) win against Rikkai (Hai Guang).
I don’t remember being as invested in their match in the anime as I was here, maybe I was just too focused on the Fuji match at that time, but what they did to build that game as a decisive point in the season finale was so well developed, I was impressed.
#5 He XingLong (Kawamura Takeshi) & Ya JiuXin (Akutsu Jin)
Tumblr media
This is a relationship that can get complicated and even problematic if handled incorrectly. Akutsu’s journey through the anime is pretty long and takes a while for him to be on a healthier place, but the added element of aging the characters could have gone really wrong here if they had done him exactly as in the anime or manga. I think they did pretty well with the time they were given, showing his turmoil and learning curve.
XingLong was allowed to have a more in-depth journey being older and about to graduate, it made more sense for him here to think about his career at this stage and added the gravity of this being THE moment to decide whether to keep pursuing the sport or take over his dad’s restaurant (they even adapted the type of food they cook to match the cultural impact of the family-owned business, which was great).
I think the two complemented each other really well and worked interestingly together, in a way I didn’t think the drama was gonna give them time to do, so I’m really pleased.
#4 Qiao Chen (Momoshiro Takeshi) & Zhang BaiYang (Kaidoh Kaoru)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My younger self is thriving with this one being included tbh. These two were so much fun in the anime, two rivals and opposites that represented the future of the team upon their elders leaving.
I was surprised to see them so focused here, because it’s not a relationship most adaptations put emphasis on (their loss), but it paid off immensely by the time their game against Bunta and Jackal (Jin WenTai & Ke Jie) came around.
Kaidoh is a tough one to adapt most times, and they did him so well in this one, I think this is my favorite live action Kaidoh in any adaptation, and I’ve watched a whole bunch of tenimyu in my day. They really captured the ambiguity of his character, how he balances a tough exterior with a sensitive core. Qiao Chen maintained his feelings for Xu Xingzi (Tachibana Ann) but that didn’t stop them from showing these two every time they could.
#3 Mu Siyang (Tezuka Kunimitsu) & Ji Jingwu (Atobe Keigo)
Tumblr media
Oh, these two. Hyotei (Xing Yao) wasn’t featured as much as one would probably expect (I’m a Fudomine fan and with Yu Feng I got more than I even was expecting, but I admit Hyotei is a riot and I always live my best life when they show up). Still, they did the Tezuka/Atobe match justice and then some.
Mu Siyang was incredibly compelling as Tezuka, and had a vulnerability to him that made me worry for his health more than I probably did for his anime counterpart. Maybe also the fact that he was older than his anime version yet looked younger than him made it sink more that his injury was something to worry about. I wish we had time to include anime!Tezuka’s issues with yips with Siyang, because I know the drama would have pulled it off, but that was further down the line in the story. Maybe for a season 2.
Anyway, the Atobe/Tezuka game is one of the best games in tenipuri history and the drama knew it. The game felt like it earned its gravity with the development of both Siyang’s injury and Ji Jingwu’s determination to play against him. Then they sprinkled the camp on top, as the anime does, with Ji Jingwu paying for his every expense and calling him to get updates, which is 100% canon compliant imo.
I feel like Ji Jingwu didn’t have enough room to be as much of Atobe as he could be, but then again, that’s not easy for anyone to pull off. Not even Kato Kazuki can do Junichi Suwabe as well as Junichi Suwabe.
#2 Bai ShiYan (Yukimura Seiichi) & Tian ZiLong (Sanada Genichirou)
Tumblr media
So, it’s tough to feel for Rikkai (Hai Guang) at this point of the story. You learn about Yukimura’s health and it’s difficult, but you just met them and the first impressions haven’t been great.
However, the relationship between Sanada and Yukimura has always been something pivotal for the way the team is constructed (they were named that way for a reason, two parts of a same hero and all that) and they sustain the team in a way other teams don’t have to. They are the mom and dad of the team, the coaches, the leaders and the pillars. They have a balance of severity and permissiveness, of strictness and instinct. They are like a couple who has been married for 25 years.
How on Earth, I asked myself, will they achieve that with censorship on the way? I don’t know, but they did it, the mad bastards.
It really does come through 100% the importance of their relationship and the way in which the captain’s health affects the team and, more than anything, their vice captain. It reaches a crescendo during the final match, before ShiYan’s operation, and they manage to pull it off with the time they have.
Also, their scenes are like shot for a contemporary romance drama and I appreciate that vibe.
#1 Tang JiaLe (Kikumaru Eiji) & Chi DaYong (Oishi Shuichiro)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh boy. Look. I still own Golden Pair merchandise from my Days, ok? These two hold a special place in my heart. I saw actors who portrayed them grow up, succeed and pass away, sadly. I still sing Depend On Me sometimes. There is a cheerful vibe with these two, a sense of overcoming obstacles and finding balance, I don’t know. Fuji is my favorite character but these two are special in their way.
This freakin’ drama just went full on Golden Pair. The level of content was off the charts. The moment they came on the screen, the second they talked about their doubles, it was already setting the tone of how deep their relationship was going to go. I am a bit amazed that they avoided to get closed down for this ngl. And I appreciate the risk because it paid off.
They have a body language communication that is captured in every shot. Even when they’re not the focus of the scene, they’re close, touching or holding each other, arms around each other, hands on each other’s shoulders, grabbing each other’s clothes. When they fight, that language changes drastically, and the distance they take feels intense and cold. You go through it with them and the team shows it as well. There’s an entire episode I had screencaps of and never posted when the team falls apart because they do.
My favorite part, though, ironically, isn’t what they did with them together but what they did with them apart. They took time to develop them as individual characters with their own issues, their fears, their worries and weaknesses. They were allowed to be flawed and wrong and have to mend their ways.
What really got me and impacted me deeply was the fact that they chose DaYong to talk about mental health. They gave room to speaking about the physical implications of anxiety disorders and about how self esteem issues can give more magnitude to ongoing issues with your mental health. Again, the age of the characters being changed helped add a depth to some issues that get developed with more intensity in a drama of this kind, and the way in which it takes TIME to get resolved, it isn’t a one episode thing, it’s an underlying issue that spans the season...*chef’s kiss*
Even though there’s a specific tenimyu incarnation of these two that I hold dear and will always remember fondly, I think that Xu Ke and Zhu ZhiLing are the most successful and best portrayed live action Golden Pair I’ve ever seen.
Bonus that was in the montage but it’s specifically about a family relationship: The Zhuo Bros
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have said Fuji has always been my favorite and his relationship with Yuta as an older brother (albeit he’s not the eldest sibling like me) is one I always felt close to.
In the anime, the two have a rocky relationship that gets developed throughout, but the drama is very good at establishing not only Zhuo Yu’s (Fuji Yuta) self esteem issues, the subsequent use of that Guan Yue (Mizuki Hajime) does and Zhuo Zhi’s (Fuji Syusuke) attempts to breach the gap between the siblings, they also use it to develop Zhuo Zhi’s character and his reticence to show weakness.
It’s tough to get Fuji towards a place of vulnerability without breaking character, but they used family and the care he provides to his brother as a point to further his story, and I appreciate that a lot. They managed to build Zhuo Zhi up with this sibling bond as one of his core elements, and that gave a lot of dimension to his games and his character.
Bonus that wasn’t in the montage but I’m including in some capacity: Mu Siyang (Tezuka Kunimitsu) & Zhuo Zhi (Fuji Syusuke)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought these two deserved a place in the list, even if they weren’t grouped much in the montage, because the drama did make them share moments together that I feel gave more depth to their characters.
There was a very interesting moment in which they showed Mu Siyang and Zhuo Zhi establishing their differences when approaching tennis, and how serious Mu Siyang is about taking the team to victory. I think that strengthened the character as a captain to me, in a way that shows it rather than tells it, and allowed for his guidance to still be present when he wasn’t physically there. His determination ultimately influenced Zhuo Zhi to take things more seriously, and that was a pretty interesting development to see.
All in all, I should, at some point, go and do a serious review for MyDramaList but I wanted to leave in my blog how much I appreciated this adaptation. I wasn’t expecting much and I was delivered everything.

Nirvana in Fire Character Reference Sheet Roughly in the Order Those Characters Are Introduced
For @howdydowdy, as promised, and for anyone else who, like me, is terrible at names and needs some kind of “Who?? Ohhh right. That guy.” reminder.
Basically, my Nirvana in Fire Journey started with me watching half the first episode, being wildly confused, realizing I was in over my head re: names and thus deciding to go back to the beginning and watch it again But Taking Notes This Time. I watched the whole show with a notebook and pen at my side. I figured I may as well spare you all the labour by typing it up.
As more information was revealed, I often added it to a character’s initial note, but by and large I’m leaving those extra notes out so you can experience the joy and confusion and anguish of New Information yourself. The exception to this is generally a person’s name, title, and position. E.g. Duke Qing’s name, Bai Ye, isn’t mentioned until a number of episodes after he’s first mentioned, if I recall correctly, but knowing that the person named “Bai Ye” is the same person called “Duke Qing” is exactly why I took these notes for myself in the first place.
Basically this isn’t intended to be a character guide that lays out exactly who a person is, their relationships to the other characters, and their place in the story, but rather something you can look at whenever someone mentions a name that jogs your memory just enough for you to be able to place to person. Which is why the notes tend to be either the context in which the person was introduced or the relationship through which they’re introduced.
Some names and notes are inherently spoilers, but hopefully by virtue of the fact that this is broadly in the order a character is first mentioned/introduced, you can avoid spoilers simply by not scrolling down too far. For those persons where their name or an alter ego comes in significantly after their initial introduction and is a spoiler, they are listed a second time starting with the “new information” and with the note in italics indicating their original entry (there aren’t a lot of these, don’t worry).
I will readily admit that some of my handwritten notes are just a name and then a blank space because apparently I just never actually added a note for them. I haven’t bothered adding those people here. Yes it’s because I’ve forgotten entirely who they are, but I’m pretty sure that means you’ll be okay if you immediately forget who they are too. (That being said, I get the sense there are actually relevant people missing from this list. As the show carried on and introductions became less frequent, remembering them became less difficult.)
The List
Lin Xie –> Commander of the Chiyan Army
Lin Shu –> “Xiao-Shu” –> Lin Xie’s son –> Mei Changsu --> Chief of the Jiangzuo Alliance --> Su Zhe

Zhuo Qingyao --> Eldest son of Zhuo Dingfeng --> guy on the horse and later the guy helping the old couple on the boat and later also the guy who calls Xie Yu “father-in-law” (I am telling you this specifically because I am not bad at faces but this guy added so much confusion to my life that was cleared up the moment I realized these people were the same person. And also because my mother is terrible at faces and for like 15 episodes every time he showed up in another random place I would say “that’s horse and boat guy” and she would say “wait what? really???” So I’m assuming at least one other person will share in this struggle)

Annals of Chuping 1 (190)
[From Yuan Hong’s Houhanji 28]
Annals of Emperor Xiaoxian [“Filial and Offering”], Part 1
1st Year of Chuping [“Beginning Peace”]
[23 February 190 – 11 February 191]
Spring, 1st Month, xinhai [4 March], a great amnesty Under Heaven.
Palace Attendant Zhou Bi and Colonel of the City Gates Wu Qiong, argued to Dong Zhuo, saying:
In all cases the affairs of deposing and installing are great, and not attained by regular people. Yuan Shao did not comprehend the greater structure, and fearful and afraid set out and ran without having other aspirations. Now with the urgency of a bounty, circumstances are certain to make him change.
The Yuan clan have planted kindness for four generations, the students and former functionaries from their gates are everywhere Under Heaven. Suppose they gather the prominent and outstanding so as to assemble a crowd of followers. The gallant and bold will follow them and rise up, and East of the Mountains will not be possessed by Your Excellency. It is not as good as forgiving him, and designate him the Warden of a single commandery. Then Shao will delight in avoiding punishment, and there is certain to be no worries.
Zhuo considered it to be so, and therefore used Shao as Grand Warden of Bohai.
On guichou [6 March], Zhuo killed the King of Hongnong.
Zhuo sent the Prefect of the Gentlemen of the Palace, Li Ru, to advance with poisoned wine to the King, saying:
Ingesting the drugs can expel the foulness.
The King said:
I am not ill. In truth [you] wish to kill me this way.
He was not willing, they forced him. And so the King was together with Concubine Tang and the palace people to drink the drugs. The King himself sang, saying:
Heaven's Way is easy, and destiny why so hard.
Forsook the ten thousand vehicles, and withdrew to guard the border.
A traitorous subject is coercing, and fate will not be delayed.
Going away [I am] about to leave you, and depart for the hidden darkness.
Concubine Tang rose up and danced, she sang, saying:
August Heaven collapses, and Sovereign Earth crumbles.
Somebody is Emperor or King, and fate is cut short and swept away.
The dead and living have different paths, and following this [will] turn aside.
Dismayed, I am alone and solitary, and within the heart is sorrow.
Following that she wept, and those sitting there all grieved. The King spoke to Concubine Tang, saying:
You are the former consort of a king, and in the circumstances will not become the wife of a functionary or commoner. Take care of yourself, from that [I] bid farewell with you.
Thereupon he drank the drugs and died. The Emperor heard about it, he came down from his seat and thoroughly grieved.
At that time, the Inspector of Ji province, Han Fu, the Inspector of Yu province, Kong Zhou, the Inspector of Yan province, Liu Dai, the Grand Warden of Chenliu, Zhang Miao, the Grand Warden of Bohai, Yuan Shao, the Grand Warden of Donghai, Qiao Mao, the Grand Warden of Shanyang, Yuan Yi, the Grand Warden of Henan, Wang Kuang, the Chancellor of Jibei, Bao Xin, the General of the Rear, Yuan Shu, the Consultant Gentleman Cao Cao, and others all rose up with righteous troops, wanting to execute Zhuo. Their multitudes each numbered several tens of thousand people, and they pushed forward Shao as master of the oath. Shao titled himself General of Chariots and Cavalry. Cao was Acting General who Exerts the Martial.
The Grand Warden of Changsha, Sun Jian, likewise raised troops to execute Zhuo, and by the time he arrived in Nanyang, his multitude numbered several tens of thousand people. Zhuo used Jian as General who Routs the Miscreants, hoping he would be agreeable and restrained. Jian denounced Zhuo as being past his prime, and advanced to station at Yangdui. Zhuo was greatly angered, and dispatched Hu Zhen and Lü Bu to strike Jian. They fought at Jianping, and Jian greatly routed them.
Zhuo, since the troops East of the Mountains were abundant, wished to move the capital to Within the Passes. He summoned the Excellencies and Dignitaries to discuss it, saying:
Gaozu's capital was Within the Passes for eleven generations. Later during Han's middle flourishing, the eastern capital was Luoyang. From Guangwu until now there then has been twelve generations. Leaning on the the Stone-Wrapped Chamber Prophecies, [we] ought to again return the capital to Chang'an.
Among the hundred officials there were none who dared to respond. The Minister over the Masses, Yang Biao, said:
Moving the capital and changing the regulations are the great affairs of Under Heaven, and always must follow the heart of the people and ensue from what is proper for the times. Formerly Pangeng made the fifth move, and the people of Yin where altogether resentful. For that reason he composed three chapters to shed light on and explain it.
In the past when Wang Mang usurped and rebelled, he disarrayed and made chaos of the Five Constants. And in the disarray of Gengshi and the Red Eyebrows, they burnt down down Chang'an and harmed and wounded the hundred families. The population drifted away and absconded, and out of a hundred not one remained. When Guangwu accepted the instructions, he altered the capital to Luoyang, and this was appropriate for it.
Just now [we] have established and installed a sagely ruler, brilliantly raising high Han's benediction. But then for no reason to give up the ancestral temples and palace halls, abandon the former emperors' parks and mounds, the hundred families will be frightened and alarmed and not figure out these intentions. There will surely be boiling gruel and an assembly of ants, and so cause disturbance and chaos. The Stone-Wrapped Chamber Prophecies is a book of bewitching perversity, how can [we] trust and make use of it?
Zhuo changed colour and said:
Excellency Yang wishes to obstruct the strategies of the House of State? East of the Mountains, the Yellow Head-scarves make chaos, and is where thieves are rising up. Chang'an's strategic points of Yao and Han are firm, they are the important defences of the state.
Also from Right of Long [one] obtains timber, the work is not difficult. And below the Southern Mountains of Duling there are Emperor Xiaowu's old place for kilns to make brickwork, in one morning and one evening it can be managed. The palace houses and official storehouses, how are they not sufficient to talk about! The hundred families and small people, how is it sufficient to discus with them! Suppose there are [those who] go forward and come back, [we] will use our great troops to spur them on, how will they get to be by themselves?
The hundred companions all lost colour. The Grand Commandant, Huang Wan, said:
This is a great affair. Excellency Yang' speech, might it not be [you] could think about it?
The Minister of Work, Xun Shuang said:
How is the Chancellor of State enjoying moving the capital? Now East of the Mountains, troops are rising up, it is not possible to corral them in in a single day. But West of the Passes is still quiet, and for that reason we will move there to plan, as in the circumstances of Qin and Han. Stand firm and fight, without stop, and misfortune is certain to be what comes back. I will not do that.
Zhuo caused to have the ministers memorialise to dismiss the two Excellencies.
2nd Month, dinghai [probably a mistake for yihai, 28 March], the Grand Commandant, Huang Wan, and the Minister over the Masses, Yang Biao, were retired by bamboo slips.
Earlier, Zhuo made use of the opinions of Wu Qiong and Zhou Bi and selected the famous scholars of Under Heaven. When Fu and others had set out, they all raised up troops to plot against Zhuo. Zhuo considered that Qiong and Bi had sold him out, and in his heart was angry with them. Reaching the discussion on moving west, Qiong and Bi firmly admonished. Zhuo, greatly angered, said:
You Lords said [we] must draw out and employ good scholars. Zhuo followed the two lords' scheme, and did not dare to disobey the heart of Under Heaven. When the various lords arrived at their offices, they raised up troops and plotted, how can Zhuo count on [you]?
Thereupon he beheaded Qiong and Bi.
Biao and Wan were fearful and afraid, and hastened to Zhuo to apologize, saying:
It was because of small people's fondness for the old, not a wish to obstruct the affairs of state. [We] request to consider [our] shortcomings as accepting punishment.
Zhuo was not fully furious with them at the time [?], and when he killed Qiong and Bi, he had come to regret it, so for that reason the petitioned for Biao and Wan to be Brilliantly Blessed Grandees.
Zhuo used the Governor of Henan, Zhu Jun, as Grand Coachman, to be considered as deputy for himself. Jun was not willing to accept, and because of that advanced to say:
The state ought not to move, it is certainly undeserving of Under Heaven's expectations, and will complete the rift with East of the Mountains. Your Subject does not see that it is possible.
There was a minister who said:
The summons to audience was for you Lord to accept the designations, but you Lord resisted it. [We] did not ask about the affairs of moving, but you Lord put it forth. Why so?
Jun said:
To be deputy for the Chancellor of State is extremely weighty and is not something Your Subject is capable of. That moving the capital not be planned is what is pressing for Your Subject. To decline what he is not capable of, and advance what is urgent for him is what is proper for a subject.
There was a minister who said:
The affairs of moving the capital, earlier there were no plans for that, and even if there are, they have not yet been exposed. How did [you] gain knowledge of it?
Jun said:
The Chancellor of State, Dong Zhuo, arranged to make Your Subject talk about it.
The ministers were not able to bend [him] and so the great subjects of the court, and the Gentleman of the Masters of Writing, Hua Xin, and others all commended him.
Owing to that, they desisted and did not make him deputy to Zhuo. Zhuo increasingly hated him, and he feared he would certainly be destroyed by Zhuo, he therefore ran to Jing province. The Intendant of the Brilliantly Blessed, Zhao Qian, became Grand Coachman. Wang Yun became Minister over the Masses and caretaker Prefect of the Masters of Writing.
On dinghai [9 April], the Son of Heaven transferred the capital to Chang'an. Zhuo stayed behind to station at Luoyang, he thoroughly burned the palace houses, and moved the people to Chang'an.
On renchen [14 April], a white nimbus passed through the sun.
3rd Month, jisi [21 May, possibly an error for yisi, 24 April], the Chariot Drove to arrive at Chang'an. During the chaos of the Red Eyebrows, the palace houses had burnt down completely, and there was only the Exalted Temple and the Jingzhao office buildings. Thereupon they went and made the capital there.
On wuwu [10 May], Zhuo killed the Grand Tutor, Yuan Wei, and his three sons.
At that time, Yuan Shao was stationed in Henei. The Grand Warden of Chenliu, Zhang Miao, the Inspector of Yan province, Liu Dai, the Grand Warden of Dong commandery, Qiao Mao, and the  Grand Warden of Shanyang, Yuan Yi, stationed at Suanzao. The General of the Rear, Yuan Shu, stationed at Nanyang.
The Inspector of Ji province, Han Fu, held a great assembly at Suanzao, wanting to make an oath. The various provinces and commanderies in turn pushed forward and yielded to each other, nobody was willing to be the one in front. The Board of Merit Official of Guangling, Zang Hong, climbed the altar holding the blood, and said:
The House of Han is ill-fortuned and the kingly guide-ropes have lost control. The traitorous subject  Dong Zhuo exploits feuds to indulge in harm. Calamity is inflicted on the most venerable, cruelty flows to the hundred families. There is great fear for the loss and destruction of the altars of soil and grain, and the shearing away and overturning of the Four Seas.
The Inspector of Yan province, Liu Dai, the Inspector of Yu province, Kong Zhou, the Grand Warden of Chenliu, Zhang Miao, the Grand Warden of Dong commandery, Qiao Mao, the Grand Warden of Guangling, Chao, and others, have brought together and joined righteous troops, and together hurry to the state's difficulties.
All of us in the same oath must unite our hearts and join our strength, so as to cause a subject be steadfast, and that perished heads and lost principals are certain to not cause division. [If] there are those who pull out from this oath, they will tumble to their fate without having offspring. August Heaven and Sovereign Earth, the founders, ancestors and luminous spirits, will truly all oversee it.
The spirit of Hong's speech was sorrowful but strong, with weeping tears flowing down. Of those who heard his words, even among the squads of footsoldiers, the servants and cooks, there were none who were not excited and brought up.
Zhuo's troops were strong, and Shao and the others did not dare to be the first to advance. Cao Cao said:
[We] raised up righteous troops to punish violence and chaos, and now the multitudes have already joined together. How can you Lords be doubtful afterwards? [When we] caused Dong Zhuo to hear about the troops of East the Mountains rising up, [if he] had relied on the veneration for the kingly house, occupied the defiles of the Two Zhou, and turned to preside over Under Heaven, then even though he was without the Way in how he acted, it still would be enough to troublesome.
But now he burns down the palace houses and forcibly moves the Son of Heaven. Within the Seas shake and stir, and do not understand where to resort to. This is the time when Heaven destroys him. With a single battle Under Heaven will be settled, [we] cannot neglect it.
He guided his army to go west and fight at Xingyang. Cao's troops were greatly defeated.
At that time, the Inspector of Qing province, Jiao He, also raised troops to chastise Zhuo, [but] He and the various generals when they travelled west, did not make protective defences for the common people. When they started to cross the He, the Yellow Head-scarves had already entered their region. Qing province was flourishing and wealthy, and the army strong, [but] He looked at the robbers and ran north, not once catching the wind and dust, or mixing with the banners and drums. He excelled at divining with stalks and trusted ghosts and gods. When one enters to see his [kind of] person, Pure Talk impinge the sky. When one sets out to observe his government, rewards and penalties are in smashed disorder. The province thereupon is barren and bleak, and thoroughly becomes hills and wasteland.
Soon after, He became ill and passed on. Yuan Shao sent Zang Hong to take charge of Qing province. He consoled He's people and multitudes, and the thieves and bandits ran off and fled. Shao admired his ability, and moved him to be Grand Warden of Dong commandery.
Summer, 4th Month [22 May – 20 June], used the Great Minister of Horse, Liu Yu, as Grand Tutor.
The Prefect of the Masters of Writing, Wang Yun, memorialised, saying:
Grand Scribe Wang Li explains the Classic of Filial Piety' Six Secret Affairs. Make the Imperial Court act on them, to dispel and hold off calamity and evil. He has increasingly the body of a sage.
A decree said:
[We] have heard a king must study virtuously. [We] have not heard that Master Kong made the Classic of Filial Piety to be [like] this, and then held off evil.
Yun firmly memorialised his request, saying:
Li's studies are deep and substantial, these are the confidential mysteries of a sagely person. Act on them without reduction.
The Emperor therefore followed it. Often on auspicious days, Wang Yun, together with Wang Li, would enter to make the Emperor recite one section of the Classic of Filial Piety, and use canes and two bamboo mats to delineate the Nine Palaces on top of them [?]. On subsequent days, [he?] at times then set out from and entered them. When Yun came to harm, he then did not again act it out.
Yuan Hong says: The gods in truth are perceptive, bright, principled and straight, they comply with people and then act. For a king who esteems virtue, to abundantly make offerings to be used as banquets for Heaven and Earth can be said to be the utmost. Suppose in all regards the affairs of the Six Secrets was not the Way of a sagely person, and for a regular fellow it is in the same way still not possible, then how is it with the fates of emperors and kings!
5th Month [21 June – 19 July], the Minister of Works, Xun Shuang, passed away.
Shuang, courtesy name Ciming, was the son of the Prefect of Langling, Shu. Aged twelve, Grand Commandant Du Qiao taught him. He was recommended as Filial and Upright, and Worthy and Good. During the partisan affairs, he was proscribed and forbidden, and went in seclusion by the sea. He again went south to hide at the banks of the Han. When the partisan affair was loosened, nominations and instructions arrived criss-crossed, there was summons to be [Scholar] of the Way and Broad Scholar. In all cases he did not go.
At the beginning of Emperor Xian's reign, Dong Zhuo endorsed Shuang as Chancellor of Pingyuan. He had not yet arrived at his post, when he was summoned to be Intendant of the Brilliantly Blessed. After being in his office building for three days, he moved to Minister of Works. At that time, those who were loyal and proper had a brave forbearance, and those who held close the Way were deeply silent. Shuang had dispersed calamity at the court of Dong Zhuo, and also in the space of a ten day ranked at the pinnacle of subjects, a lordly person would use this to deride him.
Earlier, Shuang and his brothers, eight people, were titled as the “Eight Dragons”, and Shuang most of all was praised as a Ruist and for his refinement. His older brother's son Yu's fame carried weight in his generation.
6th Month, xinwei [22 July], the Brilliantly Blessed Grandee Zhong Fu became Minister of Works.
Zhuo opened up the various mounds of Luoyang and the graves and tombs of the great subjects. He destroyed the bells and bell frames that were within Luoyang city, and melted them down as coins. In all cases they did not complete the engravings. Furthermore he melted the Five zhu coins, the engravings and the outer rim were impossible to hold on to. Hence money became cheap and things expensive. One hu of grain reached several millions.
The Grand Warden of Liaodong, Gongsun Du, titled himself as Shepherd of Ping province, and erected a Temple of Shizu of Han.
When the Chanyu, Qiangqu, had been killed by the people of his state, his son Yufuluo should have been installed, [but] the people of the state installed Xubu as Chanyu, and Yufuluo went to the imperial palace to lodge a complaint. It happened that Emperor Ling collapsed, and the kingly house was in chaos. Yufuluo brought along several thousand cavalry, and, together with the White Waves thieves, he robbed the region of Ji province. The hundred families had all made tall walls and emptied the countryside, so there was little to obtain by plunder and robbery. He wished to return home to his state, but the people of state did not accept it, and he thereupon halted in Hedong.
