“But how could it spontaneously implode 🙁”says co ceo of unregulated sub company. “We made sure it was made of brittle and unispected carbon fiber and a window that was only rated half the depth that we planned to dive and that it had zero communication or manual steering. this is such an unexpected tragedy. so anyway, the checks already cleared right?”

A follow-up to this (Life's a quest, innit)
***
Steve's running. He's running as fast as he can, to the stairs, down the stairs, he can't feel his legs, he's one bolt of electricity, he has to get to him. He needs to tell Billy that he knows, he knows it was him, he figured it out. It's too late, how could Steve be so oblivious, it's too fucking late now because Billy is laying there in a pool of black blood with a gaping hole in his chest, and Steve just needs him to hold on a second longer, he has to let him know, it hasn't been just a game, it's been real, Steve's been seeing Billy in his dreams for months now, please oh god, please
"Steeve.. Steve!"
"Steve!!"
Steve's shaking, he's shaking all over because this can't be happening, he needs to get to Billy, he needs to tell him
"Steve! Wake up!"
Steve opens his eyes to the dim light of the hospital room. A woman in white is hovering over him
"Are you okay? Steve, are you with me?"
"Yes.. Yes, Mrs. .. Miller. I'm .. "
He's sitting up in the armchair. He must've fallen asleep. Again.
"I must've .. it was a bad dream."
"It's 9.30 already. Are you getting home or should I fetch a blanket for you?"
"Oh, sorry. It's so late. I uh .. I'll probably get going. Have an early shift tomorrow."
Steve's sliding his hand up and down his face. He's fully back to Earth now.
"Have a nice night, Mrs. Miller. I'll come by tomorrow."
"Good night, Steve! Drive safely! Like I always say it, this boy is lucky to have you as a friend."
Steve smiled weakly, and looked at the hospital bed. Billy has been in a coma for almost a month now.
"Bye, Billy. See you tomorrow."
***
Steve was getting used to the fact that sometimes miracles happened.
Billy was alive. After the injuries that no living person was able to survive, he was still breathing. With the help of the machine, and in a coma, but he was alive.
Doctors didn't say much about the perspectives. Didn't want to give false hope, and Steve understood that. Max visited Billy almost daily. El did, too, before Mrs. Byers decided to uproot the whole family. Billy's father came once or twice, but Steve didn't see him. Each of the kids stopped by once in a while, usually accompanying Max.
Steve was here every day for two weeks straight. Before work, or after, depending on his shift, but he made it a rule of visiting Billy every day. The first couple of weeks doctors didn't allow visitation, but as soon as they gave a green light, Steve and Max were the first ones to enter Billy's room.
Steve remembers that he cried when he came back home after the first visit. He cried real tears, cried himself to sleep.
The next day he picked up "Romeo and Juliet" that he had borrowed from the Hawkins Library a couple of weeks ago. Sat in the armchair near Billy's bed and read it to him.
"These violent delights have violent ends, And in their triumph die; like fire and powder, Which, as they kiss, consume: the sweetest honey
Is loathsome in his own deliciousness, And in the taste confounds the appetite: Therefore love moderately: long love doth so."
***
Steve couldn't say that he liked reading much, on the contrary, but the times when he was reading those lines to Billy felt special.
Steve also talked to Billy. Every day.
"Hey .. just so you know, I loved the quest so much. I still have your pendant, so you better wake up if you want to get it back."
"Hey, Hargrove. I really thought it was a girl. Because .. because it's Hawkins and nothing extraordinary ever happens here. Everyone and everything has to be normal. Well, I don't really care."
"I didn't allow myself to think it could be you. And .. I really didn't think it was possible. But here it is .. a miracle. It was you. And I didn't know. I thought .. I thought it would all disappear, the things that I felt for you. But they didn't .. disappear. They are all still here, you just need to wake up, Billy. I have so much to tell you."
"But soft! what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun!— Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou her maid art far more fair than she."
"Billy, you're probably gonna laugh at me, but hey, you .. you've always been like the sun. So hot, so radiant. You were burning me, Billy, and you didn't even know that. You are the sun, and you need to .. you need to rise again. Just like the sun rises every day. It's the laws of nature, Hargrove. You don't have a choice."
***
One day Steve went to Main Street to the florist's and ordered the same kind of bouquet that he had picked up a month ago. Lots of roses, red like blood, wrapped in gray paper. The lady who took the order recognised him and he asked her how her mother was doing. They chatted a bit, and the next day Steve brought a bunch of flaming roses to Billy's room, put it on the bedside table.
"I don't know which flowers you like, Hargrove, and if you like them at all. Just want to let you know .. that I loved the ones that you had given me, remember? .. Is it okay for us to give each other flowers? .. I don't care if it isn't according to some kind of normal rules. To hell with rules."
"Let's play a game, shall we? I'll name a flower, and you'll move a finger if it's your favourite one, okay?"
It's either Billy didn't like any flowers, or he was too deep in a coma. Unreachable. Because he didn't move a finger even once.
***
One day Steve took the picture of the ocean to the hospital with him - the one that had been mailed to his house, the 11th note.
"This photo is really beautiful, man. Did you take it yourself? I guess that's California, right? Where you're from? This is actually one of my dreams, like I've always wanted to see the ocean. We can drive to the East coast, or West coast, wherever you want. You just need to open your eyes, Billy. So many good things ahead of you. I promise."
***
One day Steve finds Max sniffling, eyes red, looking out of the window in Billy's room.
"What if he never wakes up, Steve? What then??"
"Max, I .. I don't know. I guess we need to believe. To hope. Your brother is strong. He's so strong. He'll pull through."
He has to. He has to do it, for me. Am I being selfish? Fuck this, I am. I am selfish. I want him for me. I want to find out how it would feel to do all those things with him I've been wanting to do. He has to wake up.
Steve cries again, when he lays in bed sleepless that night.
He needs one more miracle.
***
"Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night.."
***
Just .. wake up, Billy. Please.
***

Fancy Meeting You Here Ch 2
@steviesbicrisis
Our boys meet up at the mall and Sparks begin to fly
Steve stared at the slip of cardboard in his hand, tapping his foot rapidly against the cheap linoleum floor of his, Chrissy's and Robin's kitchen. He wasn't sure why he was so nervous, Eddie just wanted to catch up. Eddie who he had fantasized about kissing before he was even cognizant of his attraction to men   Eddie who with his doe eyes and dark curly hair was just his type. Eddie who had forgiven him so quickly and flashed a toothy grin that made his knees go weak.
It had been 3 days since they ran into each other at the club and Steve still hadn't worked up the nerve to call him. He took a deep breath, grabbed the phone off the wall and dialed the number.
The ringing seemed to go on forever until finally a familiar voice picked up on the other end.
"You've reached Eddie Munson who's calling?"
"It's uh Steve, Steve Harrington, we ran into each other in Indie,  you gave me your number so we could…catch up." he sammers out.
He hears a chuckle and turns to see Robin in the doorway "Smooth moves King Steeve." she stage whispers.
Steve jerks his head from the phone placing his hand over the receiver and makes a face  at her. "Chrissy, six months," he replies. She makes a face back and walks away.
He pulls the phone back to his ear  "Sorry bout that, Robin was being a menace." he laughs
Eddie chuckles from the other end.  "Listen if its a bad time I can…"
Steve cuts him off , "oh oh no you weren't interrupting, um I moved in with her and her girlfriend after I got disowned. my folks didn't like the whole kissing boys thing."
There's silence  from the other end before Eddie lets out a low hiss" Christ, I sorry, that sucks about your folks. Uncle Wayne always said they were no good but I didn't realize they go as far as disowning their only kid for liking boys".
"Yeah well, like your uncle said, they're no good." he replies after a moment not sure how much to reveal In this moment.
"If it helps my dad wasn't keen on the whole kissing boys thing either." Eddie's voice is soft and a bit sad. "It's not like he was ever a good dad, it's just… he's still my dad and it still hurts you know."
"Yeah yeah I get it." Steve feels a warmth rising in his chest and a blush forming on his cheeks.
They sit in silence for a moment and Steve briefly worries that Eddie it's about to hang up until he makes a little coughing noise.
"You said you moved in with Robin and her girlfriend, is she… like us, you know, a friend of Dorothy?"
"Robin's a lesbian, yes."
"Oh okay cool"
"You probably know who her girlfriend is too." Steve reveals.
"Really who is it?"
"Well. you know those rumors that Chrissy Cunningham ran off and became a lesbian? Well they're true."
"Chrissy Cunningham? Really? I never got those vibes from her. I always thought she and Jason, whatever his name is, would get married and live that whole 2.5 kids white picket fence life till she realizes she was too good for him and runs off with her yoga instructor or something."
Steve laughed, he had forgotten how descriptive Eddie could be.
"I think that's what she thought too, you know minus the yoga instructor bit, how do you come up with stuff like that?"
"Come now Stevie, I was the leader of the Dungeons & Dragons Club in high school coming up with elaborate stories off the top of my head is in my bones."
"Funny you should mention a couple of kids I used to babysit are part of that club now."
"Really?" The other man seemed genuinely intrigued.
"Yeah they're good kids, they're juniors actually it's crazy to think that they're going to graduate next year."
"Well I'm glad my little club is in good hands."
"I'm sure they would love to meet you, you know provided you'd be interested."
"I would be honored to meet the young padawans carrying out my humble tradition "
That's a Star Wars thing,Steve knows that now.
"I'll talk to them next time I see them" he replies, " listen I actually have to go now, me and Robin work at the Scoops Ahoy in the mall maybe you could swing by sometime and we could chat after I'm off work."
"Sounds good, are you working on Thursday?"
"Yeah from when I get off at six maybe we could head out to the food court and chat over dinner?" Steve is trying desperately to make sure this doesn't seem like a date even though he kind of wants it to be one.
"Sounds like a plan Harrington see you then."
"I'll hold you to that Munson."
Steve wanted to hang up before placing the phone back against his ear hoping Eddie was still on the other end.
"Before I hang up those things I told you about Chrissy and Robin, those are in confidence, you know that right? I only told you because I got express permission so you can't say anything to anyone about it."
"Of course Harrington, my lips are sealed, Lady Buckley and Lady Cunningham don't have to worry about me "
"Good, see you Thursday."
"See you Thursday."
With that Steve hangs up for real and leans back against the wall with a dopey smile on his face and the phone still pressed against his chest.
He can't wait till Thursday.
____________________________________
Eddie's beat up old van looks almost comically out of place amongst the station wagons and sedans that populated the Starcourt Mall parking lot.
The same could be said for him, Eddie reflects as he enters the mall and checks the map to see where Scoops Ahoy is. Soccer moms shoot him dirty looks. Popular high school girls point at him whispering and giggling behind their hands, no doubt dissecting everything he's wearing. A small group of mall goths stare at him with an odd mix of judgment, admiration and fear on their faces. Being stared at for simply walking around wasn't any more pleasant when they did it but at least they seem to respect his right to be here.
When he reaches Scoops Ahoy Robin and Steve are preoccupied with customers. Eddie sits down and watches them work. Their uniforms are ridiculous bright blue imitations of sailor suits but he has to admit it Steve somehow makes it work.
The former jock  looks up from his work and spots Eddie  at the table, a dazzling smile spreading across his face, "Hey Eddie, I'll be able to leave as soon as my replacement is done clocking in time I just wait a couple minutes okay?"
Eddie nods and Steve returns to his work.
A few minutes pass and Eddie has started to zone out a bit when felt someone tap his shoulder.
Steve is standing next to the table still in his uniform and Eddie's brain goes  blank for a moment. He hadn't noticed it as Steve's lower half had been blocked by the counter but the uniform apparently included a pair of bright blue shorts that fit tight against Steve's muscular legs, they leave a bit more to the imagination than those tiny basketball shorts used to wear in high school but not much.
"Hey Eddie," Steve said with a wave, "Let's get going, I'm actually starving."
"um…Yeah." he manages once his brain gets back online, "sounds good, lead the way".
Steve nods and begins to walk out of the store and Eddie follows him. They walk in silence for a bit and Eddie swears he catches Steve sneaking glances at him out of the corner of his eye but he brushes off the thought!, why would Steve Harrington, even dethroned as he was, be so invested in looking at him.
"What have you been doing since graduation?" Steve asks
Eddie looks over at him and the other man smiles at him warmly and genuinely, it makes his stomach do a little flip. "I'm still trying to make it big with my band but in the meantime I'm a mechanic actually, Uncle Wayne got me an apprenticeship with a buddy of his once I was done with school"
"That's actually really cool man, I know  the basics about maintaining and fixing cars since I can't really afford to pay someone else to do it at the moment but maybe you could teach me a bit more about it." Steve laughs lightly and scratches at the back of his neck.
A hot guy is asking Eddie to teach him how to fix cars, just casually as if that's not a huge goddamn fantasy. His brain short circuits for the third time in less than 15 minutes and he starts to wonder how Steve Harrington of all people has this effect on him.
"Um yeah definitely I'd love to teach you the tricks of the trade." He says bumping Steve's shoulder with his playfully.
"How about your band, how's that going"
" Really good actually. We've been able to play in some decent venues and not just The Hideout."
"Really? That's great."
"Oh yeah we played for like 100 entire people last week, we even got paid to do it" Eddie laughs.
"Wow, didn't know I was in the presence of a rockstar." Steve shoots back.
"Come on, don't tease me."
"I'm not, I mean it, I'm glad you're doing well you deserve it" Steve says softly placing his hand on Eddie's forearm.
The world around them blurs for a second as the two men lock eyes, some sort of tension in the air and all Eddie can think about is Steve's hand on his arm and how easy it would be in this moment to just lean in and...
No!
No, snap out of it Steve had just gotten out of a relationship!  Eddie shouldn't be thinking like that. They were here to catch up, that was all.
"Umm." he said, breaking the tension "God we've been talking all about me and I haven't even once asked about you. So what about you? What has King Steve been doing since he passed on his crown?"
Steve shakes his head a bit and clears his throat, " oh umm, besides Scoops I actually work part-time at a daycare, I want to be a teacher but right now I'm just saving up some money for college while Robin and Chrissy work on their education."
Eddie's heart swells; he can see the way Steve's eyes take on a new shine when he talks about his daycare job and future in education and was reminded briefly of the small handful of actually enthusiastic teachers who had made School bearable to him.
"That's great!" he responds "The world could use more good teachers"
Steve flashes the same face splitting grin from earlier.
"Thanks man that means a lot."
They continue to chat through the walk to food, through standing online and ordering their food, and become so wrapped up in their conversation that they sit in those cheap plastic chairs long after their food has been eaten. Steve is in the middle of a story of a crazy adventure he Chrissy and Robin had gotten into when the intercom crackles to life and informs them that the mall will be closing in 10 minutes.
Bitter disappointment pools in Eddie's stomach.
"I can finish the story as we head out to the parking lot," Steve says after a moment.
Eddie nods and gets up, grabbing the tray from both of their meals and dumps the contents into the nearest garbage bin placing the trays on top then following Steve through the mall.
They end up pausing outside the doors and continuing to chat until the cold becomes too much to handle.
Steve's about to walk back to his car when Eddie grabs his wrist to stop him, "Hey listen man, my bands playing a gig out in Indy over the weekend I'd love for you to come." he says pulling out one of the folded up makeshift flyers the band had been carrying with them and handing it to Steve.
Steve smiles softly eyes crinkling at the corners, "Sounds great Eddie, see you there."
"I look forward to it" Eddie says and the odd tension is back " I should really get going now though it really is cold out here "

Steve said goodbye then headed off Into the night.
When Eddie's within the privacy of his own and he places his hands in driving position on the steering wheel forehead resting on the space between them dumb smile playing on his lips.
Steve Goddamn Harrington,who knew?

So when the new Downton Abbey movie came out, I went to watch it. Now I'd never seen the show or the other movie, but, I went to watch it regardless, because pretty girls, pretty accents, pretty dresses, and my biggest weakness (which wouldn't you believe, is not pretty boys) STUNNING ARCHITECTURE. I nearly died everytime I saw a sweeping shot of the intracately carved fire places or the polished marble floors. Ahhh. My dream is to make something that beautiful one day.
Anyways, after I watched the movie, I decided to give the show a go. Mostly because my mom wanted to watch it with me, and she never wants to do that about anything I'm interested in.
And I'm only on season 2. I've just watched the first episode of it. But I've come to the startling realization that I do very very very much hate both Thomas and O'Brien. I know it probably shouldn't be startling because they are awful people (at least from what I've seen). But my startle is that it is the first time I've looked at a character and not vibed? With them?
There are awful, clearly morally wrong villains like Frollo or Cruella. And they work because they are so dastardly. I do not want them to win. And I'll admit I'm quite happy to see their end, whether it be death or simply their downfall. But, I still enjoy them as characters. They are awful but that's what makes them such good villains for the heros to destroy.
Then there are terrors we see less of, Sauron is the first that comes to mind. While he doesn't go around skinning puppies, he is still a good villain. And again, while I am glad for his downfall, I do enjoy him as a villain. And let's be real. I am a simp we all know this. ANYWAYS-
Then there are sympathetic villains like literally all the fire nation teenagers. Azula, Zuko, Mai, Ty Lee, I feel for them all. I see why they make each decision that they do. And I care about them as a person. I feel happy when the last three reform and find better lives. And I feel terribly sorry for Azula as I watch her slip into madness.
Even Ozai, while I doubt I could say so if such a man existed in real life, I enjoy his character. He is an awful man and he is great at it.
Then there are smaller antagonists, bullies mostly. Steeve Palchuck, Josey Pie, half of the Disney chanel characters. I dislike the bullying. But I still like and appreciate the character.
But these two... Thomas and O'Brien. Something about them just awakens something within me that I honestly have not felt. Ever. Like I do truly hate them. They are just awful!
Anyways, I've basically said nothing in too many words. I dunno. It's 41 minutes past when I thought I'd go to bed.
My point is, they have been written with much though, for even in my heart, I cannot find any love or appropriation for them.

Tantallon wildfire remains 50 per cent contained Friday morning: Halifax fire
With firefighting resources in the Halifax-area spread thin amongst multiple fires that began Thursday afternoon, the municipality’s largest fire that started Sunday remains 50 per cent contained.
“Yesterday was a tough day for the folks on the line. It was hot, relatively windy… The issue was all the additional issues that sprang to life,” Department of Natural Resources and Renewables forest technician Dave Steeves said Friday morning.
“We had to reroute a lot of our resources,” he said.
Firefighters responded to a structure fire in Halifax at the Waegwoltic Club in the city’s south-end, and two separate brush fires in Fall River and on Prospect Road.
All three fires are considered “out,” though firefighters remain on scene to put out hot spots.
Steeves said there was “minimal growth” at the Tantallon fire overnight, which was last estimated to be 837 hectares in size. More than 200 structures have been seriously damaged or destroyed by the flames, including about 150 homes.
With other fires in the area under control, Steeves said crew is hopefully “going to be able to make some ground” on further containing the fire in suburban Halifax.
Friday morning brought with it some long-sought-after precipitation in Tantallon.
“I’ve never been so happy to see rain as I was this morning,” Halifax deputy fire chief David Meldrum said during a news conference Friday morning.
“It’s great. It’s going to slow down fire spread today, but it’s not enough.”
Meldrum said that all humidity and precipitation is good news, but much more rain is needed in order to combat the extremely dry conditions across Nova Scotia.
“The precipitation this morning will buy us a few hours. It will give us an operational advantage to be more aggressive in some areas,” Steeves said.
The forest technician said it will only be a few hours before fire fuel like trees, vegetation and structures have dried up from the heat “and then we’re back in the same position we were in yesterday.”
“We are hopeful that there will be more precipitation to help our cause.”
Meanwhile, firefighters are on scene in Shelburne County as the largest ongoing wildfire in Nova Scotia continues to burn out of control near Barrington Lake.

The Supreme Court of British Columbia has dismissed an appeal of a landmark decision upholding the province's public health care laws. A three-judge panel at the B.C. Court of Appeal on Friday rejected Dr. Brian Day's argument that a lower court judge made critical factual errors in denying his constitutional challenge to legislation that prevents patients from accessing private care when wait times in the public system are too long.
In their majority reasons for judgment, Chief Justice Robert Bauman and Justice David Harris wrote that while long waits for treatment have violated the charter rights to life and security of person, those violations are permissible under fundamental justice.
The justices stated that the laws that Day is challenging are intended to ensure equitable healthcare provision and to prevent the creation of a two-tier system in which access to potentially life-saving treatment is based on wealth.
"We recognize the personal interest in avoiding a lengthy wait when they have the means to seek private care and avoid an increased risk of death. We do not downplay the gravity of the situation.
In a written statement, Adrian Dix praised the decision, saying he was "extremely pleased" with the outcome and pledging to "vigorously defend" the public system.
Dr. Melanie Bechard acknowledged that the public system is under severe strain, but she asserted that there are equitable solutions to wait time and quality of care issues.
"Allowing doctors to charge patients whatever they want is not one of them, nor is forcing patients to pay out of pocket or purchase private insurance," she said in a statement.
The appeal court decision closes another chapter in a legal saga that began in 2009, but, likely, the story is far from over. Day has previously stated that he intends to fight his case all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada.
In 1996, Day established the Cambie Surgery Centre, billing privately for a variety of different procedures such as orthopedic surgeries, screening colonoscopies, and oral and plastic surgery.
His constitutional challenge, filed with four patients as co-plaintiffs, focused on two sections of the MPA that prohibit doctors in British Columbia from billing patients above the rate paid through the Medical Services Plan and prohibit the sale of private insurance that covers treatment provided under MSP.
In a decision that spanned over 800 pages, John Steeves dismissed the challenge in September 2020. He stated that he saw no evidence that unrestricted private health care would reduce wait times in the public system, and that in fact, most experts testified that wait times would increase.
Bauman and Harris acknowledged in their reasons for upholding that judgment that much has changed in the last two years, and the strains on the health-care system have only grown more pronounced.
"We take judicial notice of the COVID pandemic crisis, which has resulted in the cancelation or postponement of elective surgeries and other procedures. We are also aware of the current shortage of family physicians, which limits the availability of readily accessible primary care," the justices penned.
However, they stated that the current challenges could not be considered in the court's analysis of the facts. Although the appeal court upheld the overall decision to dismiss the challenge, the justices on the higher court said Steeves erred in concluding that the MPA does not violate the charter right to life.
"The risk of death has increased for an unknown number of individuals suffering from lifethreatening conditions who wait beyond the benchmark for certain procedures and would otherwise have been able to access private care and mitigate the wait," they wrote.
Nonetheless, Bauman and Harris justified the violation of Section 7 rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as necessary to protect those who cannot afford private care.
Lauri Ann Fenlon agreed with the decision to dismiss the appeal, but stated that long wait times in the public system are "grossly disproportionate" to the objectives.
"A system that provides care three years after it is required cannot be described as a system that provides access to medical care, except by the most strained definition," she wrote.
She claims that this violation of fundamental justice principles is justified by Section 1 of the charter, which allows for "reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society."
Fenlon wrote that, while the current system prolongs suffering and harms those who can afford private treatment, she had to consider the public good.
"The negative consequences of striking the impugned provisions and allowing private care would cause those who could not avail themselves of private care — the most vulnerable in society — to wait even longer for care, potentially increasing their risk of harm — beyond that which we have discovered to exist under the current regime," she wrote in her concurring reasons.
The original trial in British Columbia Supreme Court lasted 194 days and included testimony from 17 patients, 36 doctors, and 17 representatives of health authorities and the province. A total of 590 exhibits, including 40 expert reports, were admitted into evidence.

my only regret about stormlight archive (after reading 2 books) is I wish that shit was LONGER!!!!!! I know 1200 pages is pushing it but damn can I PLEEEASE get like 100 extra pages of filler. I want to watch pattern read a book (poorly). I want to see Kaladin hang out with his boyz eating that perpetual stew. where is lopen’s hat for syl I KNOOOW he bought her one. I’ll even be happy to see the king and moash holding hands and skipping because I know that’s what they’re doing off screen. where is the scene of Dalinar putting his two beautiful sons to bed and tucking them in (obviously they share a bunk bed and he tucks them in every night). would pay actual money to see Adolin grooming his horse and telling him he’s such a good boy. and beach episode when????

Life's a quest, innit Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4
Scoops is busy on Thursday. Steve is keeping an eye on table 7. Moms with kids, some girls, a couple. Nothing stands out as extraordinary. Steve's looking but he can't look to the point of weird. Robin has already told him: "You're being creepy today. Everything okay?" When the clock shows 2 he waits till the table is free and goes there to wipe it. There's nothing on it. He checks the seats, rearranges the napkins. Where the hell is the message?? "A bit of help here, Steeeve?" - "In a second!" He gets on his knees pretending to be picking something up, and then he sees it. A white envelope, stuck under the table. Steve grabs it, but understands that he'll need a knife, it's been glued to the bottom of the table with .. a gum. Eww, seriously? How very romantic. "Steeve!" - "Just a minute, Rob, some asshole stuck gum here!" He scratches it off, hides the envelope in his pocket.
Reads later
"Tell me, Steve, do you like it when it's a bit gross? I bet you do.
Vanilla is nice, but we can throw some gasoline in and set it all on fire.
I'm willing to make up for the gum. If you'll let me.
Go to the florist's on Main Street on Sunday and tell them your name."
Steve's feeling as if his whole face including the ears went up in flames. It's hot in here, isn't it? He's tugging on his collar. The girls he's ever been with, were all vanilla. He's never tasted fire and thought that was the only way the world worked.
Guess, he was wrong.
***
Sunday morning he doesn't even eat breakfast. Drinks coffee and jumps in his car. When he comes to Main Street, it's still empty, all people are at home enjoying their weekend morning. No rush.
But Steve's blood, it's rushing. He likes the game. Loves it. Whoever's doing it, they got him hooked. The further he's in, the less it feels like a prank. He might still be wrong about that, but his gut is telling him, it's genuine. It's true. Or he just really wants to believe that it's true.
The bell jingles above the door and Steve's saying Good morning to a middle-aged nice-looking woman busy arranging a bouquet
"Uhm.."
"Good morning, how can I help you?"
Steve suddenly feels stupid. He hasn't thought of the way to explain why he's here.
"My .. my name's Steve Harrington? I believe I need to .."
"Oh, yes! Pick up your order, of course. Just a second."
The woman disappears for a minute and comes back with a huge heap of crimson red roses wrapped in dark gray paper.
"They are wonderful, aren't they?"
Steve's not sure what he's supposed to do.
"They are."
He's still standing there like a fool. The lady is handing him the bouquet.
"Change water daily if you want them to last longer."
"Of course. How much is it?"
"Oh. Don't worry about that. It's been pre-paid. Your name is Steve Harrington, right? So these are for you, and the money has been settled."
Steve's still standing there. Like a fool.
"Do you need anything else, Mr. Harrington?"
"Uhm .. no? No, thank you.. Have a nice day?"
"You too, Mr. Harrington!"
Steve slowly turns around and leaves the shop. Oh, wait, maybe .. maybe he can ask her
The bell jingles again.
"I'm so sorry, I've just uh .. may I ask you who made the order?"
"Let me check. It was a telephone order. Someone came in later and paid, I guess. You'll have to ask my mother, she was the one who took it. But she's out of town currently."
"Oh, I see."
He smiled
"Thank you. Awesome. Flowers." What is wrong with him? Why is he talking like an idiot??
"Thank YOU! Have a great Sunday!"
Steve rushes out of the shop again and slides into the beamer. The bouquet is in front of him and he buries his face in it and inhales the sweet smell of roses. Feels the petals caress his face. Fuuuck. Do girls send guys flowers? Are guys supposed to like it? Is it .. wrong that he likes it? Oh my god. He doesn't know what to think anymore. His face is red just like the roses, and there's a tingling sensation at the back of his head.
There's a note among the flowers. Steve takes it and, it's the usual thing now, his fingers are shaking.
"I don't even know what flowers you like or if you like them at all.
Ever been to Hawkins Community Pool? Of course you have. I've seen you there.
Tuesday or Wednesday, any time. I know you're busy with work. Locker 13, here's the key. Leave at reception.
Hope your weekend's good."
Steve wants to cry.
The roses are amazing, he puts them on the kitchen table and he does change the water every day. They stay fresh for a week. When Steve comes home after work, the wonderful scent welcomes him and it doesn't feel so lonely anymore.
***
Steve can only make it to the public swimming pool on Tuesday evening. The pool closes at 8, and he's there at 6. He stopped at home and picked up a duffle with a towel and swim trunks, just in case. When he gets to the pool, there are still a lot of people. It's good, he doesn't have to pretend he's here for the swimming. Steve goes straight to the lockers and opens number 13. It's empty, just a white envelope's on the shelf.
"You swim so well, have you done it professionally?
Also, you look so hot.
We could break in, night time and go swimming naked, just you and me, what do you say?"
Yes, oh Christ, yes, YES, Steve says yes!!! Who are you already??.. When is he gonna know?
Wait, but what if, when he finds out who's doing it, it just .. he won't like the girl? It's possible. He's gonna be nice to her anyways. Like .. the lengths that she goes to, to make this game happen? No-one's ever ever done anything like that for Steve. Besides, she sounds .. fun. He's gonna be nice to her, even if he's not going to be into her.
"Next clue Starcourt cinema. Here's the ticket. Saturday night, 7 pm. Last row, seat number 9. Search around. They are making a rerun of the Terminator. Have you seen it? Like yeah, everyone's seen it. Wish we could watch it together. Did you like the Terminator's outfit? Pretty badass, right?"
Steve will watch the Terminator again, for sure. He'll have to go alone though. Doesn't want to arouse any suspicion when he's gonna be "looking around".
He also feels .. wooed. The flowers, the ticket to the movies ..? What's gonna be next? A dinner in a restaurant?
Oh, shit! Of course. She'll invite him to a restaurant, or a cafe, or a diner, doesn't matter, it'll be perfect to reveal who she is! That's the plan, right?
Steve's a genius. He's cracked it. He's cracked the scheme!
He still doesn't know who that person is though.
Steve will break Tommy's nose if it's him. Or he'll kiss him, he's not so sure at this point.
Steve's getting impatient. How many clues before he finally finds out who's sending him on this quest? How many??
***
Steve gets a medium popcorn and a cola. The movie is not new, but all the front and middle rows are packed. Seems like every place in Hawkins is teeming with people, but summers are always like that.
Thank God, the last three rows aren't full. There are couples here and there, and Steve knows they are probably here not to watch the film. He sits down and immediately checks the bottom of his seat - maybe it's gonna be the gum trick again. No .. nothing. He slides his hands in the tight spaces between the seat and the armrests on the right and left, and then the back, and there it is - a folded white envelope.
"You're so pretty. The prettiest. You take my breath away. Leaving Hawkins sign on West road. Tuesday, 6 pm."
Steve'd seen the movie. It was good to rewatch it though. And Terminator's outfit? Totally badass. He should absolutely get a black leather jacket.
***
When he drives to the road sign on Tuesday, there aren't many cars around. Steve doesn't understand why, but he feels .. a bit .. ? Can't explain it. Like .. he's still excited about the game, but he knows it'll come to its logical end soon, it has to, and he's feeling anxious about it? What if it's still a prank? It would be so cruel. What if he won't like the person.. the girl who's sending him all of these messages? It would be so unfair, because there's like .. a connection between them already.
Yeah, all that, but also .. there's some heartache in the air tonight, maybe it's because of the sign itself? Will Steve ever leave Hawkins? What does future hold for him?
He finds the note quickly. It's stuck between two metal pieces. God knows why, Steve's drowning in irrational sadness. Nothing is wrong, it's just there. It's just that the game is going to finish soon, right? Is that the reason?
"Don't you ever want to just get in the car and drive drive drive, drive away from here? I sometimes want. With you.
Check mail on Friday."
On the way back, Steve watches in the rear view mirror how the sunset is beginning to settle.
When he comes back home, the first thing he feels when he enters his house is the smell of roses.

im gonna be brave and say this but moash should’ve kissed kaladin on the mouth when he gave him [spoiler redacted] in way of kings 2: words of radiance. I think in that moment he is allowed one no homo pass and everyone there would simply nod in understanding that anyone in that position would do the same. never to be addressed or brought up again.
