Summary:

When Lord Gwyn's lastborn is suddenly deemed king of the gods, he finds himself inheriting the remains of an abandoned kingdom. With hardly any godly subjects left to lead and the First Flame being in the hands of a human kingdom, Gwyndolin must face an uncomfortable truth if he wishes to usurp control over the Flame and restore the influence of the gods: humans are the solution.

Despite all of its supposed danger, Basgiath has never been able to sell being dangerous. There’s a reason it comes off as slapstick and silly.

This is because, to put it in the terms of this website, Rebecca Yarros can’t bring herself to put her blorbos through the wringer. Xaden and Violet are never under threat of danger or consequences.

Yarros just chucks background losers into the meat grinder and expects you to feel something for a character who is either literally nameless or who got two, maybe three lines of dialogue.

Basgiath feels hollow because there are never any legitimate stakes or tension.

(Obligatory reminder to myself that I have tumblr...) ANYWAY! I hadn't written a fanfic in years, and I especially had never posted a fic before this one... so of course, my debut had to be a 200k+ word Dark Souls lore retelling (with heavy doses of nkstein angst because of course). And as of today (Nov 3, 2024), A Flame's Consequence (AFC) has come to an end 💙

I've learned a lot while writing this, and there is SO much that I would improve if I were to rewrite this from scratch. Though considering this was my first fic (at least, my first public one), I think it turned out pretty alright :) I'll miss AFC dearly, but I'm also excited to work on new writing projects (both my current WIPs being Soulsborne)! 💙💙

You know what would've been cool? More npcs reacting to the tarnished choosing the frenzied flame ending. Every dialogue is geared towards the tarnished presumably choosing virtually any other ending but not the one that would ensure the end of the world.

Idk, I think it would be neat if there were more consequences to that choice than Melina fucking off for the rest of the story assuming you don't sacrifice her first.

Things like Thiollier or Ansbach refusing to side with someone that will only burn the world to the ground anyways or hell, Leda not going on about the Erdtree guiding us and instead perhaps be horrified that someone like us is very near succeeding in ridding every obstacle up to that destruction.

We gotta talk about the Scarlet’s clan crest’s forced rebrand like… Why is the original emblem pissing off the devs so much. They must have liked it a lot in the beginning, at least up until the release of Speed of Light clothing, so what happened? Actually, they still implemented the original clan crest in the basic mobile model, so that was at least around 2018 when things started to shift.

The rebrand has been consistently taken further and further, to the point where now no new clothings even use the original clan crest anymore. Are they trying to obscure/retcon his clan’s massacre? That would be somewhat understandable since he’s the only protagonist with so much background, but at the same time that seems like a coward’s move. All of his basic voice lines refer to his clan for a reason, I just find it baffling to go backwards like this.
