hello i would like you to know that, without fail, every time you reblog a haunting of hill house post with timothy hutton i think to myself "what episode of leverage did i miss???" 💕
; DHLFSDF:LK SDFLSDF lmaooo (nate ford . . . arguably the role)
although y'know, on the same note of the haunting of hill house, i do think it's a shame we never got to see leverage crew try to steal a haunted house. i think there would have been so many shenanigans to come out of that one.

Writing Patterns (Tag Game)
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there’s a pattern!
(My edit: Or however many you want, or WIPs, or first sentences of chapters! 😁)
Thanks for the tag @dark--whisperings and @lilredghost! ❤️ Ooh this seems fun! (All my fics are Obikin!)
His fingers fumble around on the wall until he finds the switch and the room fills with light. (Stars From Our Eyes)
Anakin stared out at the purplish blue horizon, dark like a bruise, his eyes following the black outline of distant mountains. (Warmth Against His Heart, Sugar on His Tongue)
“Ohh.” (Sustainable Practices)
Anakin lifts his foot to take a step to his left, but the thick arm of the man crowding him against the bar tenses up, preventing him from moving away. (Anywhere Else is Hollow)
Obi-Wan dips his brush into the water bowl and swishes it around before he blots it off on the folded paper towel. (Lonely Rivers Flow)
Anakin saluted some clones as he hurriedly walked passed them. (Scruffed - Anakin vs The Cat)
There was only so long that Obi-Wan could stand to see Anakin sitting on his bed with his shoulders slumped and a dejected pout on his face. (Lather, Rinse, Repeat)
The first time he sees them, it’s three days after Anakin arrives at the Temple. (The Gray Ghost)
“I’m sorry, Mr. Kenobi, Aayla is out sick today,” Ahsoka says, tucking a hairdryer under her arm and setting down a round brush on the desk to frantically click the computer mouse. (In Good Hands)
Obi-Wan shuffled closer to the conveyor belt and shifted his backpack. (The Next Model)
Not surprising that half of my first sentences started with either Anakin or Obi-Wan! I definitely lean toward using simple sentence structures in my rough drafts just to get my thoughts onto paper and plan to change some of them into more complex sentences during the editing process. This was an interesting exercise and now I’m going to be paying more attention to the first sentences in my fics 😂
No pressure tags: @grapenehifics @piecesofeden11 @kingdomvel @wibzenadarksiderwithasoftheart and anyone else who wants to play because I’ve lost track of who’s been tagged!

hii!! short hc rq—been thinking about 141 + friends with an aggressively american reader like. specifically british people with words like “y’all” and “aint” [harassing them with “y’aint” sounds funny as fuck] and idk teasing them ab the war like. it’s been on my mind all day
Lol i love that. Bet! Also sorry i couldnt do more characters im kinda tired rn so I'll do them later! Thanks for the ask anon!
Soap
would find it funny as fuck
every time you say "yall" or "aint" he cant help but giggle
He laughs whenever youre talking shit about brits and bringing up the revolutionary war
ESPECIALLY if you bring up the (dead) queen. Bro is already on the floor
Tries to put on an american accent. Ends up sounding southern. Seeing this, you try to put on a scottish accent. But fail miserably
Plays the eagle sound effect whenever you enter a room, thinks its the funniest shit ever
Is entertained by watching you argue with price over "soccer" vs "football"
Price
oh he's so done with your shit
Whenever he's winning an argument with you and you KNOW hes winning, you'll switch to a bri'ish accent. Works everytime
Lowkey flinches whenever you say "yall". flinches harder when you say "y'ain't"
Alternativey when youre in an argument you just say "Aint yall's queen dead? Yeah. thats what i thought" and he just gives you a look
Or the revolutionary war.
as mentioned before hes gotten into an argument with you many times over whether its soccer or football
"Its football. You literally kick the BALL with your FOOT." "Okay well its still called soccer idc" "...."
oh hes REALLY not looking forward to seeing you brag in his face after the US vs UK world cup game
"ITS CALLED SOCCER 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🏈🏈🏈"
"NOBODY EVEN SCORED"
You had him try american beer/alcohol brands in general. He said it tastes like piss
Gaz
Hes also amused by it
buys you cowboy boots as a joke. You end up unironically wearing them all the time
Paid you $5 to say yeehaw as loud as you could. wouldnt stop laughing for like 10 mins after
You taught him how to sing the national anthem. Now whenever hes drink he sings it
Is weirded out but also interested in the different words americans have for random things
challenges you to point out every european country on the world map you challenged him to point out the queens burial sight on the map of england
He started saying yall and aint from being around you for so long
Yall mock each others accent too. all in good fun
Ghost
is annoyed by you
generally doesnt like americans
Really doesnt understand some of the shit americans do/say
will never admit it but he sometimes finds those british slandering jokes kinda funny. like he'll huff out some air
He kinda likes some of the food. you cant blame him tho british food sucks
he thinks there's too much fat and grease in most of the food tho
Tolerates you because you dont slander him as much as the others. And overall on missions you get the job done. so its fair game

Pubs, breweries, and wine cellars of all kinds may attract the attention of a small, alcoholic fey known as a clurichaun. Mean-spirited and rude, these former leprechauns have descended into pure debauchery, seeking to go deep into the drink at all hours, singing off-key drinking songs and tormenting hosts and guest alike. If the drunken fey can be kept satisfied however, it will act as an incredibly loyal and aggressive defender of its new home, driving off thieves, gremlins, and pests thoroughly.
They may be quite capable brawlers despite their two foot height, but they much prefer to use some magic to confuse and distract rivals, laughing and jeering at anyone who falls under their spell. Worst of all, once the spells wear off the target is left feeling hungover (no mechanical effect of that, fortunately for you). They are very unlikely to get into a fair fight on their own, instead usually jumping in during a raging brawl to cause chaos, and limiting actual battles to single targets they're confident in defeating.
Inspired by the Tome of Beasts 1. This post came out a week ago on my Patreon. If you want to get access to all my monster conversions early, as well as access to my premade adventures and other material I’m working on, consider backing me there!

Hubert Malevol
Tumblr media
“Undead - concept” © Sergei Dorokhin, accessed at his ArtStation here.
[Hubert the Hunter was a saint of hunting associated with dogs, so making him some sort of undead monstrosity is delightfully sacrilegious. He’s one of the nastier family members in Castle Xyntillan, so I wanted him to be powerful, but not as powerful as Aristide.]
Hubert Malevol CR 11 LE Undead This human man is clearly dead, with blood red eyes, no nose and a lipless mouth surrounded by a matted beard. He wears hide armor and carries a sword and shield with him, a fine hunting horn on his hip.
Hubert the Hunter is one of the most powerful members of the Malevol family. He is Aristide’s grandson and embraced undeath willingly in order to pursue his hobbies—raising dogs and hunting people for sport—for eternity. He lives in Castle Xyntillian most of the time, but has a redoubt in the Indoornesse—the pocket dimension ruled by his father Runclus—and goes out to hunt the ordinary folk of Taldor at least every solstice and equinox. Hubert is loyal to the Malevol family to a fault. He takes a neutral position in most of the conflicts between family members, but takes great glee in dispatching disloyal servants and slaves. He takes trophies, and has taxidermied some of the kills he is particularly proud of.
Hubert is most comfortable in the saddle, and can summon his ghostly steed Redrum (his prized horse when they were both alive) to his side in order to ride around the wider hallways of the Castle. He loves dogs more than people, and has his grandfather or another necromancer in the family raise them as zombies or skeletons when they die of old age or violence. His prized hounds are galleytrots. He owns eight of them, each with the advanced simple template and Shake it Off instead of Mobility as a feat. Encountering Hubert with four advanced galleytrots is a CR 12 encounter.

Fearless (Su) Each ally within 10 feet of Hubert Malevol gains a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against fear effects. This ability functions only while Hubert is conscious, not if he is unconscious or dead. Frightful Gaze (Su) Hubert Malevol can use this ability on opponents within 30 feet as a standard action, which acts as a gaze attack until his next turn. Creatures within range that meet Hubert’s gaze must succeed at a DC 18 Will saving throw or stand paralyzed in fear for 1 round. This is a mind-affecting fear effect. Creatures that successfully save against that ghost rider's frightful gaze are immune to it for 24 hours. At 9th level, this ability can affect creatures that are mindless or immune to mind-affecting effects, though it still counts as a fear effect. Hubert can use this ability a number of times each day equal to her Charisma modifier (typically 3/day). Unlocked Bone Ship - CR18 Undead
A Pathfinder Unlocked version of the bone ship.
Tumblr media
Artwork is official art from Pathfinder 2e, by Damien Mammoliti on ArtStation, copyright Paizo Inc.
Unlocked Monsters are my series of redesigns of official Pathfinder monsters to make them more interesting and interactive to fight.
The bone ship is, as the name might suggest, an undead ship made of bones, which comes from Bestiary 5. Ghost ships are a classic staple of many types of adventure stories, and the ship itself being an intelligent accursed undead thing that can lash out at you on its own is a very cool idea.
Unfortunately, the creature has the problem of being, you know, a ship. A vehicle that creatures can ride, and that players are very likely going to try to board, not stab in the hull with a shortsword. The original stat block really doesn't support this at all. This is my solution. I wanted to make something that not only could be boarded, but that actually rewarded players for doing so, while still being somewhat able to fight back. I also wanted to make something that made more sense in a setting without cannons, in case you're using this in a low-firearms or no-firearms setting.
Oh, and here's a fantastic battlemap or token you can use for it. Note that this is way bigger than 30 ft., and not square like most creatures. Because it's a ship. The official art clearly shows a much bigger ship, but its space is only 30 ft in Bestiary 5, because Paizo was scared to make an irregularly sized and shaped creature. I'm not.
Bone Ship CR 18
Muscle holds together the large bones that form the hull of this ship. Rotting sails hang from masts crafted from gigantic spines. The water within 400 feet of it is stained red, and seems to be made of blood.
XP 153,600 CE Colossal undead (water) Init +4 Senses darkvision 400 ft.; Perception +40 Aura blood wake (40 ft., DC 30)

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Blood Wake (Su) The frothing, churning waters around a bone ship are stained crimson with blood. Creatures entering the bone ship’s aura must attempt DC 30 Fortitude saves. Those that succeed at their saves become shaken for 1d6 rounds. Those that fail become shaken and staggered as they feel themselves drowning and envision themselves pulled down into the bloody waters. staggered creatures take an additional –4 penalty to AC, on Reflex saves, and on Swim checks. Creatures can attempt a new save at the start of each of their turns to resist this effect. Those that succeed at their saving throws are immune to the bone ship’s aura for 24 hours. This is a mind-affecting fear affect, and works only when the bone ship is in the water. The save DC is Charisma-based.
Bound Souls (Su) The souls of numerous sailors and sea creatures form the bone ship’s collective consciousness and hull. A bone ship is immune to spells and effects affecting a specific number of creatures (but not those that have attack rolls). Any creature attempting to communicate with a bone ship, such as through telepathy, hears only the anguished cries of the imprisoned souls and must succeed at a DC 30 Will save or be driven insane as per the insanity spell (CL 20th). The save DC is Charisma-based.
Cannot Submerge The bone ship floats and cannot swim underwater or otherwise submerge, although its hull extends 15 ft. underwater while it floats.
Energy Rifts (Su) The bone ship can create three energy rifts anywhere along the sides or bottom of its hull as a swift action. These function as ranged attacks with a +3 enhancement bonus, which deal 3d6+9 points of force damage and 3d6+9 points of negative energy damage, and have a x3 critical multiplier. The energy rifts have a range increment of 30 feet, and target touch AC within the first three range increments (up to 90 ft.). The bone ship can fire all three energy rifts as a standard action. The bone ship's Strength modifier is added to the damage, and both this bonus and the enhancement bonus are split evenly between the force and negative energy damage; this is already included in the statistics above.
After firing its energy rifts, the bone ship cannot fire them again for 1 round, as they recharge.
Ghostly Boarders (Su) Once per minute as a one-round action, the bone ship can disgorge the souls of the sailors bound within it. This ability can be interrupted as if it were a 6th-level spell; the bone ship has +26 to concentration checks to maintain concentration on this ability (CL 20th, +6 Charisma).
At the end of the casting time, the ghostly boarders appear as spectral entities and slaughter all living creatures in and around the bone ship. Living creatures within 40 ft. of the bone ship take 20d8 magical aging damage (DC 30 Fortitude save halves), and if killed by this effect, their souls are dragged into the bone ship. Creatures slain in this manner can be restored to life only by a miracle or wish spell. The save DC is Charisma-based.
Rideable (Ex) Enemy and ally creatures can safely stand on - or even inside - a bone ship, riding it like a normal ship.  A bone ship cannot perform melee or ranged attacks against an enemy that is riding on top of or inside it.
A creature adjacent to a bone ship can attempt to grab onto the side of it with a grapple check or a climb check rolled against its CMD.  A creature holding onto the side of it in this way can then climb up the side of the bone ship; it’s 20 feet up from the surface of the water to the top deck where a creature can safely stand.  The Climb DC for the exterior of a bone ship is 20 (a slippery surface with handholds).
Rotting Heart (Ex) A bone ship's interior is a 25x95 ft area (the same size as the bone ship) containing a massive rotting heart with countless tendrils of blackened flesh connecting to the bones that make up the exterior hull. This interior can be reached through a hatch accessible from on top of the bone ship.  The hatch is locked with a superior-quality lock (DC 40 to open with Disable Device).  The hatch has 5 hardness and 15 hit points.  Damage dealt to the hatch counts as damage dealt to the bone ship.
A creature inside a bone ship's interior treats the bone ship as flat-footed, ignores its hardness and spell resistance, and automatically deals a critical hit with any attack it makes against the bone ship.
A creature inside the bone ship's interior is considered to be riding the bone ship.
Slow Turning (Ex) The bone ship can only turn 45 degrees per round.
Supercolossal (Ex) The bone ship gains an additional +4 size bonus to CMB and CMD, a -4 penalty to AC and attack rolls, and a -16 penalty on stealth checks, on top of those normally granted to a colossal creature. It gains a +200 bonus to its maximum hit points. These modifiers are already included in its statistics above.
Spectral Energy Cannon (Su) As a standard action every 2d4 rounds, the bone ship can combine all three of its energy rifts into a spectral energy cannon that deals 18d6 points of negative energy damage to creatures in a 180-foot line (Will DC 30 half). The save DC is Charisma-based.
Unholy Repair (Su) By spending 1 full day inactive, the bone ship can heal itself to full hit points by scavenging the bones of dead sea creatures within a 10-mile radius, pulling the bones up from the bottom of the ocean to join its hull.

Hello! I'm back with one of my conversion ideas for Pathfinder 1E, and this time, I'm converting one of my favorite 2E monsters - the Rust Hag from the AP "Blood Lords". To be more exact, the Rust Hag was statted in "Graveclaw", the second issue of that particular adventure path.
I've tried to be as faithful as posssible to the original while at the same time make it as balanced as possible, but I will admit I'm kinda new at this. So, if anyone wants to make suggwstions or corrections, they are welcome to.
With that said, I hope you like this retro-conversion! ^^

Treasure standard plus two masterwork handguns with 20 bullets
SPECIAL ABILITIES
Dodge Bullets (Ex): A rust hag gains a +4 dodge bonus to her Armor Class against any attack with firearms.
Greater Wielding (Ex): Firearms wielded by a rust hag are considered light weapons for the purposes of the Two-Weapon Fighting feat and to determine penalties for two-weapon fighting.
Hagshot (Ex): Any firearm wielded by a rust hag never misfires. It is also considered as having the ghost touch weapon ability for the purpose of hitting and damaging incorporeal creatures.
Rusting Touch (Sup): A rust hag’s touch quickly corrodes metal. If a rust hag hits with a claw attack, a single metallic object that the target is wearing or wielding takes 2d6 points of damage, ignoring its hardness. This damage is not halved as usual for attacking objects.A successful Reflex saving throw (DC 17) avoids damage, but an unattended object is not allowed a saving throw against this ability. Against a ferrous creature, this ability instead deals 2d6 points of extra damage per successful attack, with no saving throw allowed. Objects made of starmetals like adamantine or orichalcum are immune to this ability. The saving throw DC is Charisma-based.
Rust hags are an unusual breed of hag with a knack for technology and firearms. They dwell in slums, abandoned factories and other places of urban decay, where they hide out amongst the dregs of society, corrupting or preying on them as their whims dictate. A rust hag mocks the convinction that towns and cities are symbols of civilization and offer greater safety to their people, and seeks to undo these delusions by inciting violence, plunging a seemingly peaceful quarter in bloody riots, or by forcing city dwellers out of the buildings that they wrongfully see as a defense against chaos and savagery. Many rust hags set themselves up as leaders of violent street gangs, using their skills with firearms to command awe and obedience from their underlings. Other rust hags are solitary, concocting plans to drive city dwellers away and turn a once-flourishing town into a dismal ruin.
A rust hag is particularly tall and brawny for hag standards, easily standing more than 6 feet tall and weighing just a little below 200 pounds.
When a rust hag joins a coven, the coven adds discharge, foster hatred and protection against technology to its spell-like abilities.

Note
2, 3, 5, 6 (and will you read it in the upcoming year), 10 ,14, 18, 20, 24 y 25!
thank you for asking!!! i had to grab books from last year bc this year was a bad reading year for me, but the questions were/are fun!
2. Did you reread anything? What?
i reread the last unicorn yesterday!!! bc i was feeling nostalgic. i made. a BUNCH more highlights in my kindle. (altho i read my physical copy lol.) there's just... so much good stuff in there, aah.
(oh ik u sent me an ask about this, idk if you saw it--ik tumblr is goofy--but its here! also, minor clarification: it doesn't have a *sequel* but there's a pair of novellas, released as one book, that are set in the same world!)
3. What were your top five books of the year?
i. didn't read very much this year at all. (er, published books! i did read a ton of fanfic). the beginning of this year was exTREMELY stressful, and in the latter half, all the books i started just. failed to grab me :/
that said!! i met my reading goal last year, so i will just include those!!
One of the books I did read this year was The Cybernetic Tea Shop by Meredith Katz, a v cute novella about a mechanic & an android. It's set a few centuries in the future, where robotics have advanced significantly. Intelligent AI were banned a long time ago, but those few whose bodies have not eroded / code hasn't corrupted are allowed to remain. The android in the fic runs a Tea Shop, which she inherited from her long-deceased lover <3 (The book is also sappic! I would love to read more of Katz's work.
Also, like I said, I reread The Last Unicorn, which I think would be on a top 5 in general for me, if I were ever to attempt to narrow that down xD. The prose in this book is beautiful; there are so many lovely lines. And the themes in the book--the play of mortality vs immortality, the structure of fairy tales & how the ppl in this setting are v much bound by them--are present from the very beginning, which was a fun thing to pick up on during my reread xD
All Systems Red by Martha Wells! I read a lot of sci-fi last year for some reason? Anyway, I adored this. Murderbot is a fascinating pov character & I love the choices Wells makes with it. My only gripe is that I could not immediately go out and buy the rest of the series.
Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger!!! this was. so cute. It's YA, I think? Yes, okay, Storygraph confirms this. The writing is lovely, and I adore the main character and the story! One thing you see a lot of--or, actually, I guess I should say I see a lot of--in YA is like. The rebellion against authority figures? Parents are often antagonists, and I understand why this is, but it was very refreshing that in this book Elatsoe's parental/adult figures were so present & involved & like. There was this mutual respect between them that I adored. Also, she can talk to ghosts? And solves her cousin's murder by doing so! And she has a ghost dog. What's not to love?? (Oh, and she's ace, which I think I remember her mentioning explicitly! Also, the way Native culture is threaded through the book is just. Lovely.)
Am. Am I already at 5. How did. How did I get to 5 already 🥺 *kicks foot* Okay. I. Would not be me. If I didn't mention Nona the Ninth. The only reason I didn't rec the Locked Tomb series to you is bc you mentioned not wanting sci-fi, and while there are a lot of fantasy elements, it is. Very sci-fi. Anyway. I admit that I was not enthused about going into this book. Nona was originally going to be a novella, released between Harrow & Alecto, and when I heard it was getting full novel status I was. Kind of not happy. But oh my god. It was so good. The first half, or maybe even 2/3rds, of the book is very slice-of-life, with Nona going to school & planning her birthday party (despite being only 6mo old). You can tell there is more Plot happening, but Nona is v much oblivious and also being kept out of it. And then the last half/3rd is Plot-Plot-Plot. And my god. That ENDING. Alecto can't get here soon enough, I'm. I need it. I need it. OH. Okay, no, I was right when I said half bc this book is the first split POV, in that every other chapter / every couple chapters is narrated by Jod. (The God Emperor, John Gaius) while he tells his story. It was fascinating, I thought I would hate those chapters, but he is. Such a compelling antagonist, omg. Also there were more memes uwu. First book I ever annotated along with as I was reading, too!! I---
Stopping. Cutting myself off. Sorry; these books make me gush.
5. What genre did you read the most of?
Normally the answer to this is fantasy, but! I think Sci-Fi won out <3
6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?
Yes! Both last year and this year I meant to read some of my spooky-ish books for October and did not. Specifically! I meant to read:
Carmilla & Laura by S.D. Simper -> I have so many of Simper's books on my kindle, but this one is a standalone, which I've been prioritizing so I don't go buy more books w/o reading the ones I have. This is a re-telling, which I was going to read with / around the copy of the original that I have.
Plain Bad Heroines - Emily M. Danforth -> I believe this is told in a dual timeline? After three people are killed at a girls' boarding school, it closes its doors. Over a century later, a bestselling book is written about the girls and inspires a horror-film adaptation, filmed on-site. And I'm just going to use the last line of the goodreads blurb, bc it makes me want to read it now: But as Brookhants opens its gates once again, and our three modern heroines arrive on set to begin filming, past and present become grimly entangled—or perhaps just grimly exploited—and soon it’s impossible to tell where the curse leaves off and Hollywood begins.
My Dearest Darkest by Kayla Cottingham -> One of the books I did start. I'm 9% in. It's a YA novel, also set at a boarding school. A group of girls accidentally summon an eldritch horror who promises to grant their every desire... for a price, which becomes steeper and steeper as time goes on.
The Lost Girls by Sonia Hartl -> Also YA! I got this one recently. A vampire turned by her boyfriend ends up falling for his latest victim, while plotting with his other exes to kill him.
There are a lot more I'm carrying into next year, but I am most disappointed in not getting to those!
Oh, and the Priory of the Orange Tree. (I'm. 20% through. This one is a Beast!!)
10. What was your favorite new release of the year?
I don't buy a lot of new releases for cost reasons---these days most of my books are purchased through ThriftBooks or eBook sales (I am subbed to a few sites which notify you of deals; my favorite of which is BookBub). However! I had Nona pre-ordered <3 So. Nona.
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
any of them.
going into the new year with only 2 books read last/this year makes me very sad 🥺
18. How many books did you buy?
i plead the fifth
also i have no clue
20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
gotta go with Nona. i was a weird mix of both unenthused (bc this was supposed to be kind of a side novella) and enthused (bc i love this series and i wish i could do what Tamsyn Muir does) but it not only met but surpassed my expectations. Nona was... Nona's identity was a core mystery of the book; she was, more or less, a brand new character who never showed up in the previous two books, so i was. skeptical of going in, let alone to her pov.
but.
it was so good.
i. already gushed about it. i'm not. i'm not going to do it again.
24. Did you DNF anything? Why?
think i might be DNFing The Bookshop & the Barbarian. love the premise but i've noticed. a few issues in the text.
one i have def for sure DNF'd is Alma Katsu's The Deep. her books are horror + historical fiction. i finished The Hunger (which follows the Donner Party) but it was. very much a slog. i didn't like most of the characters, the horror was there but the reveal was lackluster to me. it got 3 stars tho bc it was very much a "this book isn't bad, just not for me" type of read? (there was an aspect i did like / even found kind of funny, but i--- hm. ig if you go in not knowing like, the names of the party members it would be a spoiler to say it, but otherwise i guess its... not a spoiler? idk??? i dunno, there was a subversion that i loved, but also i'm not super familiar with the specificities of the Donner Party so it may not have even been a subversion, if her telling was that accurate? i realize this is vague. apologies.)
The Deep is supposed to be abt the Titanic which. i love the Titanic, and i love ocean horror (it's a close second to arctic horror for me, and one day i want to find a book that scratches the same itch as The White Vault podcast does). but i realized early on that it wasn't a match for me, and i wish i had DNF'd The Hunger as well.
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
my reading goals are the same every year---26 books. that's a book every other week! originally i used to set it to 52 but i've had too many bad reading years.
my secondary reading goal is to cut my TBR (of books i own) in half. i don't. i don't want to admit how many that is bc. just looking at the number on my kindle makes me feel bad.

Silesaloma

[Commissioned by @abominationimperatrix, the last of their Indian monsters. Silesaloma is the Buddhist incarnation of the widespread folklore trope of the “tar baby”, a figure that entangles a character who gets more and more stuck the more and more they fight it. A number of references assume that the story of the Sticky Ogre and Prince Five Weapons is the “original” version, and that the African American version with B’rer Rabbit and B’rer Fox somehow descends from this one. That strikes me as being more rooted in 19th century Orientalism than anything else. The diffusionist idea that all culture originated in one place and then spread through the world is long debunked (the specific focus on India being a popular variant thanks to British colonialism). I think it’s much more plausible that multiple cultures around the world would come up with the metaphor of a sticky problem being literally sticky, and a hero having to think his way out in order to become untangled. Plus, the tar baby that B’rer Rabbit encounters, along with West African and Native American versions that are more likely genuine precedents, isn’t a character. It’s a trap built by another character. Silesaloma can talk and has agency, and even is redeemed at the end of the story!]
Silesaloma CR 11 CE Monstrous Humanoid This creature is vaguely humanoid, with a head like a hawk with a beak and wide staring eyes. Two tusks curve upwards from the corner of its beat. Its skin is scaly, but growing over its body and covering it like a shroud is a mass of thick, tangled hair.
A silesaloma is sometimes called a sticky-haired ogre, for obvious reasons. Its body is covered with a long stringy pelt that secretes thick glue, and the creature is usually partially obscured by pieces of plant matter, dirt and other detritus. Silesalomas are wicked and predatory creatures, killing partially to eat and partially out of a joy for violence. They enjoy lording their strength and defensive properties over other creatures, and often intimidate their victims and play with them a while before going in for the kill.
Fighting a silesaloma with physical weapons is a daunting prospect. Arrows and bolts become stuck in the creature’s hair before they can touch its flesh, and weapons are likely to be similarly entangled and glued to the silesaloma. A silesaloma uses its hair to grapple opponents, who become hopelessly stuck the more they try to escape. On the other hand, silesalomas have little understanding of or defenses against magic. They are also somewhat foolish and prone to believing lies and tricks. Despite their usual cruelty, silesalomas are not irredeemably evil, and there are stories of some of them learning the error of their ways and seeking enlightenment, using their abilities to protect travelers instead of preying on them.

A creature adjacent to the adherer can attempt to pry off a stuck weapon with an opposed grapple check. The silesaloma's adhesive hair gives it a +8 racial bonus on grapple checks. It can attempt to grapple a foe without spending an action whenever a creature successfully hits it with a natural attack or an unarmed strike. A silesaloma does not gain the grappled condition when it grapples a foe, nor does it provoke attacks of opportunity when it attempts to do so. Its sticky hair also grants it a +4 bonus to its CMD against disarm attempts. Fire can temporarily burn away a silesaloma's adhesive coating—whenever an adherer takes at least 20 points of fire damage, it loses its adhesive special quality for 1d4 rounds. Universal solvent, alchemical solvent, or a similar fluid removes a silesamola’s adhesive quality for 1 hour if it fails a DC 15 Reflex save, or for 1d4 rounds if it makes the save. The silesaloma’s hair loses its adhesive quality 1 hour after the creature dies. A silesaloma can release anything stuck to it as a free action. The save DCs are Constitution-based. Improved Deflect Arrows (Ex) A silesaloma gains Deflect Arrows as a bonus feat. It can use this feat a number of times a round equal to its Dexterity modifier, and does not require a free hand to use it; the arrows get stuck in the creature’s hair instead.
