one of the things i do love abt collegiate tennis for american players is that like. yeah we don't really get wonderkids so much but we do have a legion of 23-year-olds destined for chaos and shithousery
#obviously ignoring such outliers as in coco gauff#but yeah. thinking abt brandon nakashima and thinking i might have to stan..........#ik the college route is frowned on by some but i think it's great!! really i do#for a lot of reasons#i know they're forced (?) to play doubles in college which i think helps a lot with tactics#plus i think it's good for anybody in sports to work in a team environment#but especially a sport as individualistic as tennis#plus it gives them at least some of their youth back you know#it at least guarantees you a few years of being a young adult without being directly in the spotlight#or traveling the world etc etc etc#there's some level of locality and control

that PhD in quantum physics line MIGHT be a reference to back to the future?? not sure cause i've never seen it but it would be so hilarious if it was true 😭 i like to imagine he went to college for acting/theatre but imagine?? he's got his doctorate diploma hanging up on the wall and everyone notices it and are like "???" but he never elaborates
as someone who has grown up watching "Back to the Future," I was intrigued by this. unfortunately, the only thing I can find is that Doc Brown (the scientist in the film series) likely has a degree in nuclear physics rather than quantum mechanics. I don't know the difference, frankly, but nuclear is definitely not quantum, so that wouldn't track. even then, it's all fandom speculation as of now, and I highly doubt that NRS would reference something that isn't totally confirmed.
(hilariously enough, Johnny does reference "Back to the Future" when talking to Geras.)
I also headcanon that he went to school for theatre (with a history minor potentially), but the thought of him actually having a doctorate in quantum physics is incredible. it doesn't come up much, given his career, but then his friends see his diploma in his house and they're like "Johnny you have a doctorate? in quantum physics?" and he's like "yeah? so?" just very casual about it. and they're just stunned that he hasn't brought it up until now? mostly because he's not bragging about himself in some way fbdshbfshd

#or like. how little#even the olympics pays 50k for a gold and thats it. for at least a couple years of sports 24/7#i know team usa at least pays yr food shelter uniforms branded clothing travel hotels and equipment when you play with the team#but thats not. a profit unless you get a brand deal with a sportswear company or online sponsorships like cody miller does sometimes#and to keep brand deals you have to be winning winning like what lauren fleshman was talking about wrt her time w nike#ms tashi is only rich because it looks like she has a contract w adidas as a brand ambassador for a set amount of time#thats why she can get injured quit playing publically and still appear in ads#without the usual requirement of medaling at high profile and/or international competitions regularly#its 1 am what the fuck am i doing#edit. this isnt to argue that any specific org needs to pay more. even tho every pro athlete dhould get a living wage#its for educational purposes 👍 former olympics hyperfixator on duty

Love explaining to my kid that I'm not going to spend to 5-10x the amount of money I pay now for him to play only soccer year round and do 4 tournaments a season that will also require me to pay more.
#one season of rec for this league is $200ish which is great#as soon as you tryout you gonto club preacademy or academy#all three require year round play starting at $2000 for the year#so about 600 a season#so only 3x as much but that doesn't factor in travel or gas or whatever#and what if he decides he'd rather play a different sport one season because he's ya know a kid#thankfully he's very understanding and realizes there's still room for him to grow at this rec level#but lord sports are SO expensive it's insane#what happened to kids just going out and having fun and learning skills like teambuilding#vs training them into the ground to leave no time for anything else just for most of them to never play professionally?#rant over

Travelling back home tomorrow hoping for a smooth groove
#i did have a really nice week last week but now im back to everything feeling busy#(its not really that busy)#and oh i miss being slow like idk ever since i was a literal child doing ONE excursion weekly#for an hour#always felt like such s draining burden#and tbh i would like to know why thst is because while it's easy to see as poor habit as an adult reinforcing itself#as a kid i was always made to do things. see people.#i did a summer camp every year at least during the day#i did sports i went hiking in forests#but i remember so distinctly like an age where i stopped asking my parents to try new things#because i would get so excited!!!! but then every week it would become this overwhelming presence#despite being something that i actively enjoyed#and it eventually felt so awful i was like okay no more wanting things you dont use them wisely#like ouch yeah actually that's a big one. wanting things usually wraps back#around to shame or guilt just about always#anyway how is this relevant to travelling?#it's just that i have to travel tomorrow and i have a doctors appointment Friday i have to go to in person#ive changed beds ive slept in 3 times in 5 days#and all i can say at the end of it is that even these little things are JUST enough to be on edge#to feel like im putting my hands over my ears and closing my eyes and pretend nothing bad is gonna happen#even thougu DEFINITELY something bad is going to happen#but of course it doesnt because this is all benign stuff ive done a trillion times before of no note#crazy how complicated it can be to be a person#it is why i dream of living in a small village where i am an apprentice tradesperson and i live simple house#and the house you can walk to anywhere you need to anywhere you need in an your#but no one is that urgent about anything anyway.#beautiful little place that has never actually ever existed for anyone in anytime#but i am still wanting to scream and pull my hair out just asking why why cant everything slow down and be smaller
