Danny Miller Interview
Tumblr media
via Duncan’s Newletter
Danny Miller reveals all on his Emmerdale return
Are you around for the 50th anniversary filming?
Yes, I am. It’s a short stint, 6 and a half weeks, I think. I never imagined after I’m A Celebrity that I’d come back for a long period of time so soon, so when they called and asked if I’d like to be a part of the 50th, I was instantly interested.
I haven’t been away for a long time, but I knew the storylines which attracted me to come back and celebrate what was such a huge part of my life.
Emmerdale has been huge for me, it was an honour that I got asked to return and say happy birthday. It’s been really nice getting back and seeing everyone, a lot of new and old faces too.
Did you keep in touch with any cast and crew?
Yes! Loads. Dominic, Lucy, a lot of people I keep in regular contact with. It felt like I hadn’t really been away when I returned. I was nervous, I didn’t want people to think I was just slotting back in or it was easy. It’s great.
When you play Aaron again, is it easy? Did it take a while to get into the character?
I was given some of Aaron’s jackets when I left, they got a couple of new things in as well. They put me in trainers first and it just didn’t feel right!
I think Aaron wears more of a Doc Martin, Timberland boot – trainers didn’t feel right! It’s different around different characters. I have a different relationship with Lucy than Izzy, it’s not difficult to find those once you’re back.
Do you want Aaron and Liv to reunite?
Absolutely. When I left, it was in the middle of Meena’s storyline, it was very nice he was a part of the storyline but left off the back of it. It’s been difficult to slip back into it, but I’ve enjoyed it. In terms of Liv, I think it was unfortunate he left at that time, but I do think it’s made for a better return.
It sounds like you’re grateful Aaron wasn’t one of Meena’s victims!
I think Aaron’s a lot harder than Meena! It’s a risk, definitely. You can’t just ask to not be killed off; I was very grateful the team allowed me to leave in the way Aaron did.
Aaron did do a runner...
Yes, he did. I think that relationship, it was forgotten how toxic it had become. Liv was throwing bottles of vodka, Aaron was worrying all of the time, there was a lot of worry with her, and I think in the past, Aaron always worried about everybody else but then when he decides he’s going to start worrying about himself, it’s too late, which has led him down some dark paths.
This time, he needed to be selfish and look out for himself, he had always looked after Liv, I think at that point it was really needed to give Aaron a break.
When Aaron returns, within minutes he’s arrested, his he worried he might actually spend time in a cell rather than making up with his sister?
Yes, it absolutely happens at the wrong time. He walks in, sees a stranger in his house, he could be anybody but given the state of the panic, Aaron just deals with it by punching as always. Just as that happens, Harriet walks in so she has no choice but to arrest him. There’s not really much choice for him, it’s just bad timing.
Did Harriet overreact?
Well, she’s a police officer. She walked into arrest Terry but ends up arresting them both.
Chas turns up, is she upset Aaron doesn’t tell her that he’s back?
She’s upset until he gets the chance to explain things. Aaron was back to see Faith, knowing she’s unwell, so he would’ve come back to surprise Chas and the family, but then the timing of it, he goes back to Mill Cottage and doesn’t get the chance to surprise Chas – that comes in the form of her seeing him arrested.
Aaron has some scenes with Faith...
They are really lovely. Sally is a fantastic actress, to be able to play out some really nice scenes where Faith gives Aaron advice but also, he gives her some advice, it’s really nice but really hard to not get emotional – we were both blubbering by the end!
We discussed some of our personal experiences beforehand and I learnt so much about Sally and how incredible she is. To get the opportunity to share those scenes with her was amazing and I think they’ll be really effective as well, we touch on so many issues – mental health wise, what Faith is going through compared to what Aaron went through with Jackson – he gets a mention which is nice.
Aaron realises how ill Faith is at that point?
Yes I think the way she’s talking is what gets to him and obviously when he first sees her she’s very frail and pale and I think it just shocks him more than ever like wow, she really is deteriorating so yes, it’s then when he realises that he doesn’t know but she has obviously got something up her sleeve.
Would you have liked Robert to be part of the anniversary?
Yes it would’ve been nice, Jane and the team and she mentioned there was gonna be a lot action packed stuff for the 50th, which there is, but I was on holiday at the time and I kind of imagined there’d be some crazy action thing just to really step outside, that it would be some action packed thing where maybe Aaron could turn up and kidnap Robert out of prison, it was just stupid talk, I was actually telling Ryan about it. But no, it would’ve been really nice to have him back but it’s near impossible.
Because he’s gone down for life?
Well soap characters have done that before and they come back six years later, there’s always ways and means in soap.
Do you still get asked about Robert and Aaron? They were so iconic
Oh all the time yeah, we were talking about it on a podcast not so long ago and talking about on screen couples, I think icons isn’t the right word but I can’t think of anything else, maybe role models, Robert and Aaron led a relationship that was represented by so many people out there and it really helped change some people, people still tell me that now.
It was always going to be a question I was asked, how’s Robert or where’s Robert when people ask you in the street but yes they were a great soap couple and it was nice to be a part of and to share it with Ryan.
Will we find out where Aaron has been? He went to see Adam didn’t he? Has she moved on, got anyone else?
Yes, he’s got a boyfriend, he was in France with Adam, then they both moved to Italy and then Aaron’s met this guy called Marco and he talks about him quite a lot about, like Aaron always does, this is for keeps, this is for good, he’s said that about everyone and then he’s in another relationship. He’s been in Italy for the majority of the time from France.
How would Aaron feel if he were to found out his mum was having an affair with Al behind Paddy’s back?
To have that out in the moment, it’s tough to watch because I think everybody loves Paddy and Chas and particularly Aaron, Paddy is his dad in Aaron’s eyes - his dad robbed him of a life really and Paddy gave him one and looked after him, even when him and Chas split up.
He came out to Paddy and Paddy helped him deal with his sexuality and all the self harm stuff. I think it would be worse than the other way round in Aaron’s eyes, if Paddy was cheating, he would be more angry at Chas cheating than Paddy cheating. So yes he’s got strong feelings, I don’t think he’s going to like it at all.
Would he be able to forgive his mother and do you think he’d tell Paddy?
I think he’d want to tell Paddy every time but his mum’s going through a lot, it’s a timing thing, Faith’s really not well and Chas is playing away so the family could potentially be destroyed at the wrong time so I think his conscience is getting the better of him to tell people what’s happened, seeing Paddy and worrying about the family and what will happen and will Faith die and would she end up taking that with her instead of the happy memories of her family so it’s a lot to play with, it’s not just a case of telling Paddy.
His morals are always in the right place and he’s honest and I think it would kill him not to tell Paddy.
Have you caught up with the other actors who are back for the 50th, like Liz Estensen?
I was with Liz yesterday, I’ve had a couple of scenes with Amy (Walsh), I saw Liz yesterday and we were having a chat in the green room, it was really nice to see her, I always got on with Liz really well and it was so good to see her. She texted me after I’m a Celebrity congratulating me but I hadn’t seen the message because I didn’t have my phone back till the end of December so I missed the message.
She asked me ‘Did you get the message?’ So I looked through my messages and it was unread quite far down as it was December, I was like sorry I didn’t reply to it, we had a bit of a laugh about that. It was really nice to see her, she looks really well and I love her to bits.
Would you be open to returning on a more regular basis or was it just nice to be back for a short stint?
It was just nice to be back for a short stint and see everybody, it’s like going to a party every day and just catching up with people all over the place, cast and crew.
I’ve got a few things on at the end of the year, a pantomime and stuff and then I’ve got a job next year as well so it’s just not the right time at the moment.
But I’m not one of those actors that say ‘No, that’s it now, I’ve shelved it’, as I said it’s a massive part of my life, a huge part of my life and it always will be. There’s never a chance of me ever saying I’ll never go back.
If they had a 60th, could you see Aaron being a part of that? One of the old men in the pub?
Potentially, it depends how many kids I’ve got by then and how much of my mortgage needs paying. It’s one of those things, if it’s the right time. It’s a big part of my life and I wouldn’t ever necessarily turn it off. Obviously when I got the Bond role there might be a chance that I wouldn’t then come back!
50 years - which stories are you most proud of?
It’s obviously a bit dark but the more challenging storylines, the dark storylines if you like, a lot of Aaron’s storylines was mentally challenging for me and I had to dig deep and find something to play these big stories.
Coming out, dealing with Jackson being hit by a train then having to assist him in suicide, leaving the village and coming back and meeting Robert and going through all that affair of Robert cheating on Chrissie with him and going on to get married and Robert leaving for prison, there’s just so many of them.
I couldn’t necessarily pick out a time that I enjoyed the most, so many different scenes and storylines with so many of my friends that they are now was something that I’ll never forget.
It’s not something you can ever pay for really or wish for, it was just amazing when you think back of not just mine but all the stories of 15 years or whatever that I’ve been there, it’s just been amazing what they’ve been able to achieve, so many different writers and directors. i’m just proud of the whole show and as I say, it was a massive reason why I thought yeah, it would be really nice to be back and wish Emmerdale happy 50th.

hi jade !! this is me resending my hotch request bc of ur recent post 🤍 i sent the one about hotch taking care of bau!reader who has a really bad stomachache, thanks so much, i think you’re amazing 💞💞💞
thank you for requesting angel! fem
You do this sad thing with your hands when you're in pain. Aaron wishes he didn't know your tell, that he'd never had reason to understand it, but he does. Your fingers, in particular your pinky, curl toward your palm frenetically, and he has an ample view of your closed off face in the chair opposite. He can pin the moment he knows you're in pain down to the minute twitch of your lip.
He peeks at Morgan where he lays on the couch before leaning across the table to touch your arm. The jet offers little privacy, so Aaron tries to be delicate.
“L/N? Are you alright?”
“Mm,” you hum, too high-pitched to have come out the way you meant it.
“What's wrong?”
“Nothing.” You say this, and yet you can't open your eyes, leaning less than subtly away from him as though your pain is catching.
Aaron keeps his head down as he stands so as not to attract attention. You've sat near the wall, leaving an empty seat for him to sit in. “Hey,” he says, touching the crook of your elbow, wanting to fix it, soothe the twitch from your hand, “you're in pain.”
“It's nothing.”
“Saying it won't necessarily make it true,” he says.
“It felt worth trying.”
He is genuinely perturbed to see you in pain like this without explanation. “You have to tell me what's wrong.”
“Hotch, I…” you say, your voice wrought with embarrassment as you open your eyes, “it's just my stomach hurts. That's all.”
“Sharp pains?”
“Just hurts. Nothing dire.”
“How do you know?” he asks.
“Happens sometimes.”
He puts his arm around you, careful not to jostle your back. You're tense as a rubber band about to snap. It's unlike you to be the more rigid of the two of you, less foreign for Hotch to have softened, especially when it's you. “How often?” he asks, wary of the tears brimming like silver at the corners of your eyes.
“Just sometimes, I don't know.” You speak in a concise, panicked tenor.
In this line of work, it could be anything. Not eating enough, not having time to stop for breath. You could be thirsty, sick, anxious, stressed into pain. It could be purely psychosomatic or you could be injured. He can't remember you taking any blows during the last few days away. It could be your period. You might not want to mention that.
“Y/N,” he says, falling out of boss mode now he's sure it's not going to kill you, and into someone who cares for you, “what can I do?”
You shudder a breath, slouched under his touch. “It's not that bad.”
It's clearly a shocking amount of pain. Your shuddering worsens as he pulls you into his side. He's prepared to sit with you until you can give him better instructions, or until the pain passes, or, God forbid, things get worse. “I'm here,” he says, rubbing your arm gently. “Try to breathe.”
He's wondering why you might think this amount of pain is normal, or acceptable. Wondering why he shouldn't just call for medical assistance here and now, but then you start to come around, your face shining with perspiration. “Oh,” you sigh, wiping your face with your sleeve, leaning into your hand, hiding.
“Is it getting better?” he asks.
“I think it's anxiety or something.” Your breath slips out in disjointed huffs.
He can't guess what it is. Have you been to the doctor? he wants to ask, but perhaps in a moment, when you're steady in yourself again. “From the jet?”
“No. Maybe.” You frown.
“Jack doesn't understand that I'm on a plane.”
You lift your gaze in confusion. Aaron moves onwards.
“He doesn't understand that this is a plane. I brought him by, once, to try to explain why I can't always answer the phone. It's thick metal, you know?” It was an easier explanation than having no signal in the sky. “But he didn't get that it was something that could move. I had to take him to the airport. We watched…” He slows as your eyes meet his completely. “We watched them take off for hours. Now he doesn't get so angry when I don't answer.”
“Jack was angry?” you ask, half incredulous.
“A bit.” He tries to string the story together before you can realise what it is he's doing, his arm curling around your from behind, fingers making the most tenuous of circles into the very side of your stomach. A barely there sort of comfort. “It's not like him. He reminds me of his mom when he's angry.”
Your smile is a physical relief to see. “Does he have tantrums?”
“Doesn't every kid?”
You talk about Jack in dulcet tones while he tries to keep the pain at bay, his arm steadfast behind you, your faces closer than they have any platonic business being. He'll pester you into doctors appointments when you touch down, but for now, he just holds you and talks to you like everything is normal.
You cover his hand with yours when the pain starts anew, talking through it, pain in the soft line of your bottom lip.
“Am I hurting you?” he asks. You give him a weak smile. He feels awful, but it makes his heart race. So close, and so pretty, and so upset. “Is there anything I can do?”
An embarrassing amount of weight lies in ‘anything’. You shake your head, whispering, “Nothing. This is enough.”
Aaron pulls you in closer and wraps both of his arms around you, hiding you from the others, an aimless attempt to protect you from a pain he can't touch. Someone puts a cup of tea on the table for you, but otherwise you're left alone for the rest of the flight.

“Hey, you okay?” Your tired eyes peered up at Aaron as he neared your seat on the jet, tie loosened and top button of his shirt undone. He had just gotten off the phone with the section chief, who, undoubtedly, scolded him as if he were a wayward adolescent. Although the smile he offered you in response was tight lipped and less-than-giving, his eyes told a different tale. They softened as they met yours, shedding their cold and hard façade to reveal a weary truth, littered with hints of desperation.
This case had been long and grueling, tensions insurmountably higher than usual with Erin Strauss breathing down Hotch’s neck, scrutinizing every decision he and the rest of the team made. You barely got a chance to talk to Aaron about how he was doing, always being waved off by the older man with “We can talk later,” or “It doesn’t matter right now, let’s focus on the case,”. Begrudgingly, you obliged, understanding there was no point in pushing him. It would only add to his stress. Although the case was solved, the end was arduous. The unsub had taken a hostage and, with the rest of the BAU’s input, the negotiation tactics went a different way than what Erin deemed appropriate.
A heavy sigh parted Aaron’s lips as he slumped into his seat, you could practically see steam of stress billowing off of him. “It’s fine, everything’s fine.” He spoke quietly, eyes closed, but you could tell he didn’t believe it to be true.
“Strauss tear you a new one?” Rossi piqued from across the table.
The unit chief huffed out a short laugh. “Nothing out of the ordinary.” Rossi just nodded at this, turning his attention back to his notepad. Hotch looked to the rest of his team as they settled into their desired spots, “Let’s all get some rest, alright?”
Everyone wordlessly nodded, not having to be told twice.
Aaron lazily turned his head to you with a book in your lap, “You, too, Agent.” He gave you a playfully pointed look.
You breathed out a quiet chuckle, “I will, don’t worry.” You shut the book and turned to give your beloved undivided attention, gazing into his suddenly undecipherable, deep hickory eyes. “You wanna talk about it?”
He gently shook his head, eyelids feeling heavy as his blinks became slower and slower, “At home,” he whispered, your stomach doing a somersault at the notion. Aaron tried to fight sleep for just a few seconds longer, wanting to just stare at you for a bit.
You faced him, head leaned against the headrest, smile so warm and endearing. The way you chuckled at him was like getting a glimpse of heaven. He couldn’t wait to go home and have you all to yourself. The feeling of your arms wrapped around him was his life raft in the tumultuous storm of his emotions. It was hard for him to express what he was feeling all the time, but with you around his walls of reinforced concrete tumbled. Aaron gave you a small, sleepy smile.
Before he could say anything else, you spoke up. “Sleep,” it was a simple command, and the usually stubborn man melted into his seat at your word.
You took a couple minutes longer to watch him immediately fall into a deep slumber, his breaths becoming deeper and longer, lips parted ever-so-slightly, eyebrows twitching here and there. With a breathy laugh, you fought the urge to reach up and caress his face and move the little stray strands of hair off of his forehead, still aware that your coworkers could witness such an intimate moment. The two of you had begun dating five months ago, but it wasn’t until three months later that you broke the news to the team.
It had been a long time coming; for quite a while everyone knew about the feelings you harbored for your boss- even Hotch himself knew. You didn’t do a very good job of hiding it, taking every opportunity you could to blithely flirt with him. Some might just assume you did so in a similar way to how Penelope and Derek toy with each other, but the profilers knew in the back of their minds it wasn’t the case. Aaron fought you at first, pleading with you to stop calling him “handsome”, “big man”, or even “honey” in one case. You never gave in, though, buckling down on your efforts upon seeing the way he would chuckle caught off guard and almost blush in many instances. Slowly yet surely, he gave in to your teases. You burrowed your way into the stoic man’s heart, creating a place you would die before giving up. Aaron didn’t even realize it was happening until his world came crashing down on him one fateful evening.
A routine questioning of a suspect had led to you getting held hostage, the man whose house you went to turning out to be the unsub. This had happened many times before in the history of the BAU, but for some reason Aaron was more on edge. There was no covert entrance into the home and the unsub refused to open up a line of communication with the agents, leaving everyone in the dark wondering what the state of your wellbeing was. Aaron had begun pacing back and forth in the tent they had set up outside the house you were being held in, hands held to his head.
“Hotch, it’s going to be okay.” Derek stepped forward, trying to calm his superior’s nerves.
“He’s right, Aaron.” Rossi piped in. “We’ve dealt with this before, we can fix this.”
“No,” Hotch murmured back, “This isn’t the same. It’s not the same.” His pacing didn’t let up. “This is my fault, I should have told someone to go, too. I could have prevented this.”
The others held unspoken conversations within the glances they shared.
“Hotch-” Emily tried to speak up, to convince him that wasn’t the case.
“NO!” He yelled suddenly, stopping in his tracks. “You don’t understand, I can’t lose them!” His voice was heavy with despair, eyes wide in anguish.
All eyes were trained on him, his coworkers at loss for words at the confession.
“I can’t lose them…” Aaron mumbled this himself before roughly pushing out of the tent.
You smiled to yourself as you took a last glance towards the sleeping man next to you before turning back to your book. Safe to say, you were incredibly shocked when Aaron showed up on your doorstep in the dark of the night all those months ago, soaked in the rain, kissing you with a sense of urgency before you could even ask him what he was doing there. You bit your lip at the memory, but shook it out of your head to try and focus in on the jumbled words swimming in your lap. From the get-go, the two of you decided you would remain extremely professional around your coworkers, and you did just that. You stopped your teasing, for the most part at least, and made sure to never initiate physical contact on the job. Anyone that didn’t already know you were in a relationship would never have guessed. The most you allowed yourselves was sitting next to one another on the jet, just like you were doing now.
An unintelligible murmur and huff sounding from your side drew your short-lived attention away from the delicate pages in front of you. Just as you were about to look over to Aaron and make sure he was okay, a heavy weight thumped onto your shoulder. His head. You were taken aback, a giggle slipping through your lips before you could help it. Your fingers flew up to your mouth, trying to keep yourself quiet as you noticed him shift a bit, making himself more comfortable. Sure, you’d accidentally fallen against Hotch’s shoulder in your sleep a couple times before the two of you entered a relationship, but never in a million years did you expect him to do the same to you. On the jet. In front of everyone. Of course, he couldn’t control his actions in his sleep, you reasoned. And maybe you should gently shrug him off to help retain his authority around the teasing profilers. But, this time, you fought off that thinking and gave in to your instinct. He had been so tense and strung out this entire case, you knew he needed this.
To hell with professionalism. You thought with a devilish grin, happy in your resolution. And so, you gently closed your book and slid it onto the table in front of you, trying your best to move as little as possible before leaning your head against his own and closing your eyes. With the gentle hum of the jet engines and the comforting sounds of Aaron’s breathing, you were lulled into a wonderful slumber in no time.
“Oh my God,” Emily breathed out, garnering the attention of Spencer who rested in the same group of seats as her. He looked up at her with one eye from where he was slumped over in his window seat, trying to get some shut-eye.
“Huh?” the sleepy doctor grumbled, pushing himself a bit more upright when he noticed Emily looking at something on the other side of the jet, her face a mixture of shock and glee.
The raven-haired agent began slapping Derek’s shoulder, who sat peacefully next to her with his eyes closed and headphones over his ears. His eyes flew open, looking over to Emily with annoyance as he took off his headphones, “What! What!”
Immediately Emily shushed him, “Look!” she whispered, hand flying wildly in the air, eyes still unmoving.
Derek followed her line of sight the scene before him pulling a laugh of disbelief from his lungs. “Well, well, well…”
Emily’s hands covered her mouth in astonishment. “JJ!” she whispered over to the blonde who lay curled up on the sofa next to them. “Ugh,” she groaned quietly, unable to wake her coworker.
“I can’t believe this,” she whispered mostly to herself, settling back in her seat, garnering a shake of Morgan’s head.
The view of their hard-headed unit chief sleeping peacefully on the shoulder of his subordinate, the latter’s head resting sweetly back on his was suddenly blacked by the side of Rossi’s body as he stuck his arm out, trying to get the best angle to immortalize this moment on camera.
“Good for them,” Morgan grinned, his voice proudly announcing his amusement as he put his headphones back over his head.
“Rossi, you better send me that!” Emily spoke up just a little bit louder, the old man looking back and motioning his phone towards her in acknowledgement.
“What? What!?” Spencer whisper-yelled, unsuccessfully craning his head above and between the seats to get a glimpse of what all the hubbub was about, “What are you guys looking at!?”
“Penelope’s gonna flip,” Emily mumbled to herself, a teasing smile playing on her face as she looked down at the picture Rossi sent her. Without a second thought, she saved the photo onto her phone. They’re never gonna live this down.

Thoughts on Chenford in 6x05?
Spoilers below:
So I’ve got a longer list of gripes this week, but overall I didn’t think the episode was bad. I do feel like they gave away too much of the Chenford again and there really wasn’t much else in the episode minus that one scene which was painful angsty deliciousness.
What I liked:
Melissa and Eric were again incredible in the scene where Lucy asked Tim to leave
I am SOOO happy Lucy stood up for herself, and I am so ready for her to put Tim in his place next week. I COMPLETELY get he’s trying to protect her, but he’s taking agency away from her. She gets to decide if she wants to be protected.
This is actually why I really wasn’t at all a fan of the spinal surgery SL and Tim intentionally having people leave her in the dark so she wouldn’t worry. That bothered me even before they were dating, but now that they are in a relationship, keeping huge things from your partner isn’t how you treat a partner that you truly respect and see as an equal, and I am actually really excited to see this addressed. This is a holdover from their Rookie—T.O. dynamic that needs to change.
And of course it’s still up to Tim to decide from there if he wants to be honest with her, that’s his choice to make and he made it.
But she was absolutely right to ask him to leave when he wasn’t, and that scene was seriously so painful but well done.
What I didn’t like
Probably the main issue, for me, is that I didn’t find Tim’s situation emotionally compelling. We got told a lot of stuff about something that happened in the past, but as much as I wanted to empathize with him, I didn’t actually feel anything about it. Maybe if they’d set this up earlier on or done flashbacks or something, I’d have felt more of the stakes, but it just fell flat for me.
And this ultimately led to them doing very little to convince me he couldn’t have texted (or called) Lucy multiple times. He said he didn’t have a choice, but he did. We saw multiple opportunities when he had his phone. He willingly chose to leave her in the dark. I legit was expecting him to be held hostage or something. He just shut her out, and while I get he was going through something, not even telling her he was alive is absolutely unacceptable like Lucy said.
And then, finally, we had something that ALWAYS grates on me when they do it — using Lucy as a plot device without regard to her character or her state of mind. Her scenes with Aaron in the middle of the episode felt like they were inserted out of nowhere from a different day entirely. We were back to carefree, jokester Lucy (who I adore — when it make sense for her character). But… I’m supposed to believe she was worried Tim might be dead at this point? I’m supposed to believe she doesn’t have a LOT of feelings about Aaron flirting with his therapist considering she herself is the product her mom getting with a patient?! And yes, I get that moods shift in reality — it just completely took me out of her narrative for this episode. And when they do stuff like this, it makes me seriously question if they even remember the back story they gave her?
