Toji talk.

This isn't really a fic, but moreso of a character analysis. I saw a post circulating on tiktok about who people think is the most misunderstood character in fiction is. Between all other morally grey characters that would come to mind, surprisingly I never thought of Toji.

Tw: Jujutsu Kaisen spoilers, abandonship, mention of gambling, addiction, mention of abuse.

Perhaps it was because we were too focused on how physically attractive he was, or too focused on his wrongdoings on our other favorites. Yet when combining the elements together. It really makes no sense why would people mask him as the cold-hearted, mean, father who abandoned his kid. Even going into jokes on how he would 'poorly' parent by empathizing that he would favor his worm over Megumi.

In the tiktok post, they mention that "Megumi" literally means blessing. I double checked that information and it is true. Megumi is a feminine given name that means blessing, or grace. Toji thinks of his kid as a blessing. So much so perhaps he couldn't care less about the fact it was a feminine name. Even so, it is not an insult to be given a feminine name, after all Megumi did grow to be very beautiful.

That given, I suppose we skimmed over the fact Toji's own past is traumatic. He was looked down upon for not having cursed energy during his upbringing. Especially in the Zenin clan where all they care about was how strong each member was. So they did not care to hide that they loathed Toji and shamed him for not being able to channel his own cursed energy.

Aside from that, his gambling addiction was not always a thing. You can't be born with an addiction. I'm going to assume but correct me if I'm wrong, he probably built an addiction during his teenage to young adult years to get his mind off the abuse in the Zenin clan.

We know for a fact when he met his girlfriend then wife, he was deeply in love with her. And we also know for a fact their relationship is a period where his addiction was getting better. That he stopped. The only reason he went back to it was after his wife's death of course.

He did not abandon Megumi. He never did. Actually he was trying to shield Megumi from being a part of the Zenin clan before he was killed.

That's what I got, and correct me if I missed out on any facts; I'm not up to date with the manga.

Played back-to-back games of Abandon Ship. The original Reimer Knizia game has players trying to save some of rats fleeing a sinking ship on a long double-layered board. The second is a JAWS retheme of the original game created by my friend, Leslie Cheung featuring swimmers (complete with clear plastic wake trails) swimming for their lives as they flee a giant plastic shark.
