Eric Dolphy - The Gaslight Inn, New York City, October 7, 1962
Since kicking off a few years back, the Vintage Music Experience YouTube channel has been a ridiculously overstuffed treasure chest of rare jazz recordings. Things have slowed down slightly in recent months, but VME is still coming up with the goods with frightening regularity. You could probably devote all of your listening hours to keeping up ...
Here's one I got caught up with — Eric Dolphy in 1962 with a very young Herbie Hancock. This vibe-y radio broadcast takes us over to Red Hook, where the Gaslight Inn enjoyed a brief lifespan as a new jazz hot spot. It sounds like a fun spot, maybe a bit rowdier than the clubs across the water in Manhattan. Nevertheless, Dolphy is able to quiet down the crowd early on with a gorgeous version of Mal Waldron and Billie Holiday's "Left Alone," Eric's bewitching flute leading the way. I don't think Billie ever actually recorded this typically devastating song, but you can hear Waldron accompanying Abbey Lincoln on it right here, for some idea of what that might've sounded like.

want to make a fanvid of Louis performing hegemonic masculinity contrasted with his feminine/gendered role in the narrative as a Gothic heroine (housewife, mother, femme fatale, mad woman etc) and the masculine influences in his life (specifically Lestat but lets not forget Patriarch 2 Armand) set to Real Men by Mitski. does that make sense

If Days are Numbers, then Today is No. 75 for Alan Parsons
From the Dark Side of the Moon to the Eye in the Sky and beyond, Alan Parsons’ life thus far has been a sonic and celestial voyage.
And if, as he says, days are numbers, then today is No. 75 for the traveler who is the subject of this blog post.
Born Dec. 20, 1948, Parsons started big, engineering the Beatles’ Abbey Road and Let it Be LPs - he appears briefly in 2021’s “the Beatles: Get Back” - before handling the same task for Pink Floyd and Dark Side.
From there, Parsons and Eric Woolfson formed the Alan Parsons Project, a studio-only, revolving cast of singers and players who issued 11 albums between 1975 and 1990.
Parsons then launched a solo career and has subsequently taken his eponymous band on the road as the Alan Parsons Live Project.
There’s really nobody quite like Parsons in the musical universe. But any number of folks in the field would probably want to be like him.
Some of those folks - including friends and colleagues Michael McDonald, Al Stewart, the Hollies’ Terry Sylvester, Wings’ Laurence Juber and Ambrosia’s David Pack, all of whom he’s worked with in some other place, somewhere, some other time - are joining Parsons tonight for a 75th-birthday concert benefitting One805 and the First Responders of Santa Barbara County, Calif.
It’s the game these people play.

Mitski vs The Batfamily
Jason listens to Mitski. Prove me wrong. Tell me “Drunk Walk Home” doesn’t perfectly encompass the J-Todd experience.
He listens to Brand New City when he feels like he doesn’t belong in Gotham anymore.
In fact, A L L O F T H E M L I S T E N T O M I T S K I .
Favorite songs:
Bruce: I Bet on Losing Dogs. Because of Jason. Obviously. Interchangeable with Working For The Knife, because Bruce is never done. Gotham will always be a shithole. He knows that he’s probably hurting people. A lot. More than if he just shot them dead. But he won’t. Fucking. Stop.
Dick: Townie. He misses being young and getting away with shit, he misses fitting under Bruce’s arm, but most importantly, he misses being a kid. He feels detached from his life in Gotham now that he’s gotten older.
Jason: Brand New City. He desperately wants to leave Gotham, but can’t make himself do it. Why can’t he just go? What’s stopping him? As much as he doesn’t want to admit it, Gotham makes him feel sick inside. It took his childhood, and something else that he can’t put his finger on. (see: honey, what you took, what you take?) but he loves the BatFam. So he’s stuck in this endless cycle of self-imposed misery.
Alternately, Jason listens to Drunk Walk Home when he’s mad at Bruce. We’ll touch on that later too.
Alternately alternately, Jason loves My Body’s Made of Crushed Little Stars. He came back wrong. He knows that. It almost feels like his body isn’t even made of blood anymore. Plus, the music is his jam. He feels angry at the whole world, even those who didn’t wrong him. Every unknown is an abuser in the eyes of Jason Todd. (This was right after the pit. Now, he’s better.. sometimes.) Everyone has hurt him, so they all owe him. (See: I better ace that interview).
Even more alternately, he loves Class of 2013 (audiotree live) mainly because of his mother. The mother who sold him out when he needed her most. The mother who didn’t care enough to- y’know, not blow her son up. He’s perfected his scream for “MOOOOOM” and it’s even more full of pain and angst than Mistki’s version, somehow. He especially relates to the line: “mom, would you wash my back this once” because his mother has never done anything good for him, and he wants to be able to crash at her place and cry in her arms for hours. Just once. He feels like that might heal him, even if only for a little while.
(can you tell that he’s my favourite?)
Tim: Abbey. He knows he’s meant for more. No matter how many nights he spends working on cases, no matter how much he does to improve life in Gotham and outside of it- he will always be missing a piece of him. Unlike Jason, he’s not aware of it. He thinks he’s complete. He also feels like he’s never good enough, but we can talk about that later.
Damian: Liquid Smooth. He knows how good he is. How that arrogance should be present in his actual feelings- but it’s not. Instead, all he feels is empty inside. He sees all the children who get to have parents who didn’t force them into moulds that they weren’t suited for, and it’s like “why couldn’t I have that? Why didn’t I *deserve* it? Like Jason, he relates to Class of 2013 (audiotree live) because of his mommy issues. No, I will not elaborate.
Steph: Bag Of Bones. It’s almost gone, but she still feels a bit of resent towards Bruce for getting rid of her so quickly. That tied up rage escapes sometimes, and it always ends poorly. To make up for her anger, she is the first to apologise after having an argument with Bruce or Damian. Everyone else can fuck off. (See: let’s shake the poet out of this beast)
Cass: Eric. She still feels like she needs to exact revenge on everyone who has ever hurt her, because *they deserve it.* You know who didn’t deserve it? Her. She should have been a child for a while longer. And while there’s nothing she can do about that.. she can control the future of the people who abused her.

Assigning Mitski Discography to LADs
Lush
────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──────
Liquid Smooth: Rafayel
How I feel this river rushing through my veins
With nowhere else to go, it circles 'round
While in a literal sense, the lyrics fit without the metaphor, but aside from that- metaphorically the waiting to be in your “prime” and taken while there is time fits a lot of his themes about patience. His reflections on beauty in himself, and the world, all being on a timer that relates to MC and how she may see him.
Wife: Sylus
You're home, you're home, you're home to me
So leave me, leave me, leave me a map
I'm here at my cliff looking down
I cannot bear you a son
But I will try
For if I am not yours, what am I?
Wife’s themes about not being anything without providing to the “husband” I felt, reflected Sylus’ drive to be what he became for the N109 Zone. Giving his all to give MC the freedom she deserved, but never had. Though literally, “If I am not yours what am I” fits the soul division well doesn't it?
Abbey: Xavier
There is a light, I feel it in me
But only, it seems, when the dark surrounds me
There is a dream and it sleeps in me
To awake in the night, crying "Set me free"
And I awake every night, crying "Set me free"
There is a lot I could say again, literally the light within the lyrics could mean his evol. However, I will take it to be about his dreams. His hope that he could find a new sacrifice for Philos and be free from his duty as king to sacrifice the one he loves. The desire for freedom without duty he doesn’t want.
Eric: Sylus (Though it does fit just about all of them)
I'll sell, I'll sell my whole to you
What's my, what's my, what's my price?
The meaning of being “fixed” reminded me of his myth, of how MC saved him from his rampage as a dragon, finding pieces of himself within her, and giving her his soul as his price for sanity. I do think it fits them all though, so take that as you will.
Bag of Bones: Zayne
Fluorescent store lights, you shine through the night
Illuminate my pores and you tear me apart
Mercy on me, would you please spare me tonight?
I'm tired of this searching, would you let me let go?
There is a lot you’ll see repeated when I assign a song to Zayne; that mostly being his inability to feel “worthy” and “safe” to be around MC. Trying to separate himself from them, even if it hurts him to the core of his being. Feeling hollow in their security unless they’re together but even then having a smaller thought of it being the last time.
Door: Caleb
To show me what's beyond it
A hopeless violence
I named it love
Glimpses of love that they’ve caught but can never quite catch? I feel fits the repeated theme of not being able or quite being able to allow themselves (Caleb and MC) to cross that line to love as "man and woman". The other more literal sense, I felt was in calling the love a hopeless violence: always feeling he wouldn’t stand there as a “man”, and it was turning him into a violent person to protect what he did have.
Pearl Diver: MC
Oh, hunter, if you didn't want
The beautiful so badly
Perhaps you would've found it
In your spirit singing softly
But hunter you were human
Don't forget it and go safely
And I, I'll live without you
Though the struggle will be daily
Mostly a reflection of their main story struggles to find meaning in her aether core and her purpose, but also their willingness to find meaning in sacrifice through every myth.
Skips: Real Man, Brand New City
Retired From Sad, New Career in Business
────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──────
Goodbye, My Danish Sweetheart: Xavier
Can tell them what you saw in me, and not the way I am
And I don't mean to make your heart blue
But could we be what we're meant to be? I'm just about to beg you please, and
Then when you tell your friends, you can
Tell them what you saw in me, and not the way I used to be
Mitski once called it a glorified memory of the past that turns bitter as you reflect more. This is something I thought could be seen in the Lightseeker myth. The beginning of happy days as knights together, turning bitter as Xavier finds out what being a king means. Being unable to go back to fully trusted friends without destinies as he begs them to run from Philos.
Square: Zayne
So lying awake, I would follow the aching inside
I would find
It's for you won't be mine
I tried my hardest, for I'd never learned
God's very simple and love shouldn't burn
As stated before, Zayne complicates things a little. I also feel the simplicity he knows is there, is a bigger theme; their cafe dates, finding solace in what breaks they both have. It's a simplicity he desires but is unable to not feel complications in.
Strawberry Blonde: Rafayel
I love everybody because I love you
When you stood up, walked away barefoot
And the grass where you lay left a bed in your shape
I looked over it and I ached
The painting of memories of before being brighter than they were; His feelings about his bride, and the past in Lumira. But the popular interpretation, of being someone from a different ethnicity feeling a distance that prevents a romance? It's also something plausible to apply to MC and Rafayel.
Humpty: Caleb
I broke what you gave me
But you kept giving more
And I'm sorry for taking
But I keep wanting more, more, more, oh
All the eggshells are on the ground
And I try, I'm trying to pick them up
But they crack and crumble, it's all too much
Too frail for me to touch
There is a tweet that people keep assigning to Caleb about having ethical hangups about lusting over someone. This I feel is a continuation of that- fear of breaking what they have as “siblings”, fear of wanting too much and losing MC who’s given him his sense of identity.
Honorable mentions:
Shame with Caleb, he doesn’t get a ramble simply because it's very simple by name alone; I couldn't add more to it. Take a listen it's good.
Because Dreaming Costs Money, My Dear with Rafayel, lyrical tide lyrics, and chasing a dream it would almost be perfect if not for his actual success.
I Want You, fits both Caleb and Rafayel but not quite well enough for me to feel comfortable assigning it to either one especially when all of the LI's have themes of overwhelming self-destructive love
Skips: Circle, Class of 2013
Bury Me at Makeout Creek
────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──────
Texas Reznikoff: Zayne
Texas is a land-locked state
It's a little bit far away
From the water, from the home that I've wanted to make
It somehow, in the city, you make it there and you make it
Anywhere, anywhere
But I've been anywhere and it's not what I want
I wanna be still with you
Zayne, finds solace in MC no matter how overworked. They help him feel more “human” even if she jokes about him being robotic. No matter how overworked, and how far he could go, he always returns to MC. Who gave him motivation to study, be somebody, and what makes him happy.
First Love/Late Spring: Caleb/Zayne
Please, hurry, leave me, I can't breathe
Please don't say you love me
胸がはち切れそうで
One word from you and I would
Jump off of this ledge I'm on, baby
Tell me, "Don't", so I can crawl back in
The harshness of first love can be painful, as Mitski stated, and for them, it’s proved to be. Caleb found harshness in their assigned relationship, something that had them regressing themselves to their “child” selves as gege and meimei. Zayne’s harsh reality in love was fighting their pain in the Dawnbreaker switch, but also in being aware of their fates and MC's protocore disease.
Carry Me Out: Sylus
I drive when it rains at night, when it rains, I drive
And the headlight spirits, they lead me down the Styx
So black it shines
And carry me out
Carry me out
If I could point to a very specific performance to this song that makes me think of Sylus, it’s the live at KEXP version. It’s the soft feeling of completing a task, of knowing it's over and waiting to be carried out into what’s next. He’s finished the paradise of freedom for MC, all that’s left is to have her carry him into happiness.
Honorable Mention(s):
Francis Forever, fits every single one of the love interests. They will do whatever even if it makes MC hate them, if it drives them mad till it hurts- they just need to be able to see her because without her it hurts.
I Will, This is again everyone, in every sense. The fact that the song is meant to be what Mitski wanted to hear from someone else? It reflects their desire to be loved and praised by MC; while also being exactly what they tell her and need to tell her so desperately.
Last Words of a Shooting Star, This is going here, while people assume it’s about suicide, and rightfully so- I wish to look at it as a simple reflection at the end of a myth, or just a general “ending”. Most of the male leads seem to fit this all being too busy to ever truly reflect on death, love, and what their life has been, MC as well.
Skips: Townie, I Don’t Smoke, Jobless Monday, Drunk Walk Home
Puberty 2
────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──────
Happy: Xavier
And if you're going, take the moon
Then, maybe I will see you; in the night, I'll. see you
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you
Temporary happiness with a hint of bitterness, that usually comes to mind with Xavier and his limited time on earth. Happy reflects it being so focused on MC and that's temporary bliss; if she isn't around, he is only left waiting for his death with no happiness.
Once More to See You: Caleb
But with everybody watching us, our every move
We do have reputations
We keep it secret
Won't let them have it
So come inside and be with me, alone with me
Alone, with me alone
Love can make you feel alone was the message of this song, and Caleb reflects it perfectly. The way it's portrayed in Once More to See You, being stuck in reputations, and promises that leave you wishing for a moment of alone time to show how much love you have. Instead, suffering in the what ifs, if there was more time if we were different people.
Your Best American Girl: Rafayel
You're the sun, you've never seen the night
But you hear its song from the morning birds
Well, I'm not the moon, I'm not even a star
But awake at night, I'll be singing to the birds
It's hard to explain what this song means as I've never lived it. People always describe the feeling of not fitting into cultural expectations in America as a POC. Which, Rafayel both wants and doesn't. He takes pride in who he is but he doesn't understand what it means to be "human". To be what MC might need even if he hates being with “people”.
Crack Baby: Sylus
It's been a long, hard 20 year summer vacation
Both these 20 years tryna fill the void
Crack baby, you don't know what you want
But you know that you had it once
And you know that you want it back
It might be a bit odd to give this to Sylus but, his longing is more tangible than the others. He didn't die unlike some of the others in their myths. He doesn't have anything holding him, or his memories back. He knows exactly what he had before, he wants it, and all he can do is work to make it happen sooner so then he can rest.
A Burning Hill: MC
And I've been a forest fire
I am a forest fire
And I am the fire and I am the forest
And I am a witness watching it
This is simple as Mitski put it, a modernized sadness. Actively being the reason that things are falling apart, being the thing falling apart, and watching it all fall apart. MC has watched so much, been so much, and is so much that it's hard to find consistent happiness that isn't ruined by their existence, and lives they don't remember.
Honorable Mention(s):
Dan the Dancer is another case of fitting too many people. The lyrics reflect giving everything to one person and only being himself with them.
Fireworks, depression, and triggers that become so normal that the pain feels dull is simply most of the characters, main and NPC alike.
Thursday Girl, it fits Zayne, Sylus, and Caleb, but none well enough that I wish to say it is them.
Skips: I Bet on Losing Dogs, My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars, A Loving Feeling,
Be the Cowboy
────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──────
Geyser: Zayne
Though I'm a geyser, feel it bubbling from below
Hear it call, hear it call, hear it call to me constantly
And hear the harmony only when it's harming me
It's not real, it's not real, it's not real enough
But I will be the one you need
The way I can't be without you
Mitski once said this was written over years about music, the way it made her feel, the way it haunts her, but she can't imagine doing anything else. This works for Zayne in many ways, he can't fully move on from being a doctor, and he can't give it up or imagine doing anything else, but its killing him to have this pressure with dreams of Dawnbreaker.
A Pearl: Caleb
It's just that I fell in love with a war
Nobody told me it ended
And it left a pearl in my head
And I roll it around every night
Just to watch it glow
Every night, baby, that's where I go
To be honest, you could take this literally and I find that beautiful. A Pearl works one to one with the turing chip. I wish I had more flowery words to explain this, but this song did it for me.
Come Into the Water: Rafayel
I didn't know I had a dream
I didn't know until I saw you
So would you tell me if you want me?
'Cause I can't move until you show me
It isn't a particularly perfect fit but it is near perfect enough that I'm counting it here. There is so much within his Sea God, and Abysswalker myths that show he didn't have a complete direction of his own having always been dragged along by elders, until he met MC.
Honorable Mention(s):
Remember My Name for Rafayel, It was almost perfect but it relies too much on the idea of needing to be remembered by the world as a whole- Rafayel just wants his people remembered and MC to never forget him.
Me and My Husband, Mitski has said it's about falling out of love in life (and in general) but accepting that you have this and so you should make the best of it- which I think suits a lot of them but it isn't exactly right.
Pink in The Night, The songs reflections on being so in love your heart feels like it's breaking, it's another case of all of them.
Two Slow Dancers, A time that could be there, that would be easier to handle if it was the less complicated past, but no matter what they are still in love as always. I think of this as a reflection of the myths.
Skips: Why Didn't You Stop Me?, Old Friend,Lonesome Love, Nobody, Washing Machine Heart, Blue Light
Laurel Hell
────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──────
Stay Soft: Sylus
Just tell me what you want to do
Tell me what you want to burn away
'Cause I could be your stoker
Open up your heart
Like the gates of Hell
You stay soft, get beaten
Only natural to harden up
None of them fit the intended meaning of using sex as an outlet for trauma. However, story-wise the lyrics fit Sylus and MC very well if you take the lyrics in an actual strength training with someone way. He wants to harden her up, be there for her, take away her pain help her become a sword, and help her become a person who doesn't need to be scared anymore.
Love Me More: Rafayel
How do other people live?
I wonder how they keep it up
When today is finally done
There's another day to come
Then another day to come
Then another day to
Come back to mine
We'll pretend it ends tomorrow
Rafayel seems insecure in the promise that MC will remember him, unlike Caleb who's insecure in their relationship in general. Which is why he got this song instead. He needs more of her attention, even when it's exhausting to him and frustrating to do things he hates just so he can be with her.
Nothing Left for You: Caleb
You could touch fire, you could fly
It was your right, it was your life
And then it passed to someone new
It'll keep passing on long after you
But you're the only one she's counting on
Another time it was incredibly clear why I assigned a song, maybe I'm losing my mind. Caleb has made it clear (in one of my favorite calls explicitly) that he feels worthy and has meaning in his life because he gets to take care of MC. As she leans on him less and less, he feels like he's losing his point.
Honorable Mention(s):
Heat Lightning, All of the Love Interests fit the lyrics about giving all they have to MC good and bad, awake and asleep, and there isn't anything they'd wish to change about her or their love
I Guess, while I adore the way grief and retrospective on love and life are portrayed here- it is too good for all of them because it is something they all have, which landed it here.
Skips: Valentine, Texas, Working for the Knife, Everyone, The Only Heartbreaker, Should've Been Me, That's Our Lamp
This Land is Inhospitable and So Are We
────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──────
Bug Like an Angel: Sylus
Did you go and make promises you can't keep?
Well, when ya break them, they break you right back
Amateur mistake
You can take it from me
While broken promises aren't a theme with Sylus (that's usually with Rafayel), the gospel and religious way its portrayed. It's a small thing always in the back of your mind. It will come back to haunt you, and that reminds me of Sylus. The contract he made, and waiting for it to be fulfilled, the heartbreak he felt that MC didn't remember him.
Buffalo Replaced: Xavier
Sometimes I think it would be easier without her
But I know nothing can hurt me when I see her sleepin' face
Freight train horn howlin' out mad and wild
Headin' somewhere far away like the new buffalo replaced
I'm going to take the lyrics in two ways. Buffalo Replaced, a replacement of hope. This could be the replacement of “his” MC the queen of Philos with Main Story MC. But also could be the new hope he has on earth, a relaxing life away from responsibility.
I Don't Like My Mind: Rafayel
And then I get sick and throw up
And there's another memory that gets stuck
Inside the walls of my skull, waiting for its turn to talk
And it may be a few years
But you can bet it's there, waiting still
He out of all the LI's seems to be the one stuck in memories of the past, hung up on the idea of being remembered as her husband. But even outside of that the desire to not be forgotten. He wants people to remember what his people are, that they had culture, even if it feels like a losing unpleasant battle- he's there fighting it.
When Memories Snow: Zayne
And when memories melt
I hear them in the drainpipe
Drippin' through the downspout
As I lie awake in the dark
And if I break
Could I go on break?
Okay to confess this is mostly Dawnbreaker his memories and Glimpses of MC that he can't have when he switches with Zayne and a desire to finally be done with his job.
Star: Xavier
That love is like a star
It's gone, we just see it shining
It's travelled very far, I'll
Keep a leftover light
Burning, so you can keep looking up
Isn't that worth holding on?
I swear this isn't just because of his Star theme. It's back to being one of the only LI's who remembers everything, having “his” MC he will never forget. Holding her forever as a good friend with some guilt as he allows feelings for this MC.
Honorable Mention(s):
Heaven, for once again everyone, a song reflecting on the time so short with the person you love and wishing for it to be longer to intertwine together.
My Love, Mine All Mine, If I didn't include this I fear I would be hunted down and murdered. It is a traditional love song in a sense, thus needing to be included as one of the only true love ones; however, it also includes a love that is selfish and their own which I feel is important to note. It's their love for themselves and MC
The Frost, another myth related to all of them (except maybe Sylus for now?) how after MC is gone there is nothing but dust
Skips: The Deal, I'm Your Man, I Love Me After You

If you made it this far, thank you! Mitski has been my top artist for 5 years now, and Love and Deepspace has taken up a lot of my brain. I'd love to hear people's opinions and I hope someone enjoyed this. I might do this again with more songs but I won't promise anything. Thank you everyone for putting up with my weird schedule. I love you! ♡

“Eric Clapton gave me the Les Paul, and then it got kidnapped and taken to Guadalajara. I had to buy this guy a Les Paul to get it back!” - George Harrison, Guitar Player Magazine, November 1987 "The [Les Paul] guitar was stolen while Harrison was in L.A. [in 1973]. Through a complex of phone calls and contacts, it was found that the instrument had been hocked and re-sold to a fellow of Mexican descent. 'I called him up,' Harrison says, smiling wryly. 'I said, "That’s my guitar. I want it back, and I’ll give you your money back." He said, "How do I know it’s really you?" I said, "Okay, I’ll meet you." A meeting was arranged, but the guy just took off, jumped in a car, and drove to Guadalajara and kidnapped my guitar! Ravi Shankar was in Guadalajara doing tv or something—it was just after the Bangladesh concerts—and Ravi went on tv saying, "He’s very upset because his guitar’s been stolen and it’s in Guadalajara!" Then he read the guy’s name on tv! In the end it became a bit of a ripoff. I had to pay this guy to keep flying to Guadalajara doing deals with the other guy, and I ended up having to go out and find a Les Paul of the same period and swap it for mine. I finally got it back, but it was a really good guitar, and also it had that personal thing, because it was the "[While My] Guitar Gently Weeps" guitar that Eric played, and I used it on the white album and Abbey Road.'" - Guitar World, April 1988 (x)

Wood Engraving Wednesday
Geri Waddington
In 2007, British wood engraver Geri Waddington (b. 1953) retraced Eric Gill's transformative visit to Chartres 100 years earlier. Waddington writes that on his first trip to Chartres in the spring of 1907, Gill. . .
. . . experienced 'the thrill and tremble of heart' on catching his first glimpse of the cathedral's North Transept through the little alley between the houses of the old town. . . . One hundred years later I retraced his steps and found the spot; turning a corner the view is suddenly filled with the blazing glory of the rose window soaring up full of light and grace through the gap between the rough stones of the mediaeval houses. The contrast of shadow and confinement with light and expansiveness all made from the same stone just asked to be engraved.

Waddington's journey took her further south through the Dordogne, "now spotting Romanesque churches everywhere, the focal points of small villages . . . or sitting almost alone beyond fields of sunflowers."

"It was not only the churches that attract attention down there; the endless permutations of vernacular windows and paint-weathered shutters suggested an approach using lino blocks for added colour."

Her journey took her "as far south as the abbey at Moissac, with the earliest cloister of carved narrative capitals, completed in 1100 and almost defining the Romanesque style with an abundance of invention and decoration."

"The statue of the prophet Jeremiah in the portal of the abbey expresses such tenderness that it speaks as directly now as it must have done when made nearly nine hundred years ago."

Waddington's memoir, "In Search of Angels: from Mr. Gill to Saint Jacques," along with these original wood-engraved prints were published in Matrix 27 (Winter 2007), pp. 31-33, printed at John and Rosalind Randle’s Whittington Press in Risbury, Herefordshire, England in an edition of 680 copies, another donation from our late friend Jerry Buff (1931-2025).
