If you read Levi and Zeke’s narrative during Shiganshina Arc, during timeskip, Attack on Marley, the 30 days in the forest, Zeke’s su*cide attack, the WHOLE global chaos bc Eren's is doing the Rumbling on the World bc SC "failed" to provide them a solution...

and then suddenly starts ignoring that Zeke’s character means to represent a certain philosophy that clashes with Levi’s, and the weight of Levi’s monolog in 136 being just before Zeke & Armin’s convo in 137, and the fact Zeke literally CHOSE to die by Levi’s hand bc he acknowledge what THAT meant for Levi, and that Levi acknowledged what Zeke was choosing to do right there too...

Idk, man.

Ahh, this snippet of a scene in Chapter 136, i've always wished there would be more stories during the time of the vets. Seeing them gathered around the campfire, and seeing this is a memory reminisced by Levi at such a time makes it so sad knowing how much these moments are being cherished and remembered. I can hear So ist es emmer playing softly in the background as i see this. 😭

So imagine my happiness discovering someone who created a storyline of this particular scene. It is all i have all hoped it to be and more.

It's so beautiful and unfortunately the creator does not allow reposting it so im sharing the twitter link below. The thread is in 3 parts and shows a story that is amazing and bittersweet. Just all of them huddled together, telling stories and Levi nonchalantly sharing something that made them all laugh out loud so much. It is a moment that is so simple and yet so meaningful.

You just have to see it, it's wonderful 🤍

I dont know why snk especially the vets time affects me so much. It's like what Levi just said, that it was a time when they dreamt an exhaustingly idealistic world. Full of hope, purpose and pure determination, and then presented with the sharp edge of reality of the world at large. Everytime i think about it just makes me damn cry.

Isayama created something really so cruel yet beautiful.

And maybe like Levi, i also long for such simpler times.

I've been following you for years and now you're admitting that you're deceiving yourself (don't get me wrong, I don't mean anything bad) this makes me feel a little confused I always loved and relied on your answers I'll understand if you leave SnK but I suspect it'll get cold soon in LH 132 average was good for me, they could have done a little more emotional love Levihan but I ship them knowing that Levi and Hange don't have romantic feelings for anyone

maybe that's why i'm not so disappointed. I think it would be better if it was released as an episode instead of a movie. It's obvious that Isayama is also supervising the anime because I think he did a good job with some of the changed extra scenes like Zeke's grandparents + when 104. to Eren in paths place, they make O turn and come back. Another personal concern of mine about the anime I hope the anime recreates Levi's monologue well in episodes 136 and 139 especially his comrades don't remove the scenes he saw and romanticize the Erwin Promise thing in 136 😬

Sorry to disappoint, but people aren't infallible. Again, i'm not becoming a LH anti or anything. If you wanna ship it romanticaly it's up to you.

I am kinda done with the anime as a whole so idk what to tell you anymore. :)

This is why it's important to think for yourself instead of seeking answers from others.

Okay I read the translations and all I can say is that the chapter is crazy, creepy, tragic, heartbreaking and probably other things I haven't thought about yet. Only with a little tiny bit of beauty and sweetness.

To put it simply, I don't think the chapter is supposed to be "happy ending" or even "likable" for the matter. It's about the cruelty of this world and people clinging to tiny glimpses of beauty and hope, even if it's false and painful in and of itself.

Ymir has stockholm syndrome, but she longed for love and family that she tried to ease her dismay through loving her abuser. She wanted to feel alive, she wanted to feel like a human.

Mikasa lost her family twice so she clung to Eren like he's her everything, she says in an ova I think about not wanting to lose Eren "I don't want to start over again". So she succumbs to living on the memories of her dear ones that gave her the strength.

Historia grew up unwanted, she decided to live for herself against the wishes of others, so she desperately saved herself by getting pregnant from someone she probably didn't love (at least at the time) and saved herself and continued to live against the wishes of others. I'm glad it worked out and now she has a beautiful daughter that seems to have a loving family -something Historia was deprived of. It's also sweet that her family seems to live a simple life similar to her childhood environment.

Levi keep on living despite the fact that he has nothing to live for except for his comrade's dream that they dedicated their hearts to. He's not that old but even in the epilogue he looks so dead. I know people say he's like a father figure to the 104 and for some crazy reason Falco and Gabi, ugh. But let's be real he never got over his older version of the scout corps. The scout corps that was before 104 joined to. Personally I hate season 4 Levi for many reasons, I think he (as well as Hanje) lost himself after Erwin died and ceased to have the ability to keep up with the world. He's basically remembering the veterans more than he talks to his team now. As a matter of fact in 136 he said that perhaps their mission was over the moment they got the 104 to the beach.

Isayama already said before, that the story isn't about who's right and who's wrong. And I really like this about snk.

We see likable characters and unmistakably good characters get the short end of the stick. Like squad Levi. Petra, who probably never done anything wrong, gets killed in a horrifying way and never return to her father. While Annie (as well as Reiner) who were responsible for the deaths of more than 200k return home safely and get to live a good life?! And they seem to be over their sins? I feel bad for Bertholdt tbh. I understand they were kind of forced to destroy the gate of shiganshina and wall Maria, but they did destroy Trost on their own out of their own choice.

It's tragic for Eren on so many levels, Eren's reasonings undermines the rumble. Why'd he go that far if he's not sure of what he saw?! I was positive he saw a different future. I understand his duty but his freedom, his sanity.

I know that Isayama is trying to take a more realistic approach on the characters reaction if it were real life but that's not exactly the point of fiction.

but it's still the ending Isayama chose, it's the way snk is. He could've easily done something different but he chose this.

I'll need to wait the official translation tomorrow I guess.

This....this breaks my heart. He just...really doesnt get it does he? How absolutely fucked everyone would've been if Armin HAD died. About how hes given EVERYTHING to those around him. He fucking threw away his life for this cause and still he thinks it's not enough? He didn't become the commander because of his pretty eyes, it's because people believe and value him but he just wont accept it because it his deeply ingrained insecurities and self hatred.

Armin is one of the most relatable, flawed and human characters in this franchise and I'm reminded that this is why hes my favourite character and HAS been since 2013. And I just keep thinking back to the beginning when people called his character useless or made him nothing other than the butt of jokes and never taking him seriously when his character offers a perspective into the person who isnt "special" like Eren or physically strong like Reiner or talented like Mikasa. He wasnt even in the top 10 during cadets, yet has proved to be the most important character in this fucking story.

Hes was a normal person thrusted into this hell of a situation between humans vs titans and humans vs humans. Hes not academically exceptional, that's Hange. But what he does have is a good head, a mind for strategy. His observant nature allows him to see things from different perspectives and his out of the box thinking has been the saving grace of this narrative. The thing he used to be bullied for, the thing that would get him beaten up, HIS MIND, is his greatest asset besides his hopeful, kind and genuine personality and ambition.

His character handled depression, insecurities and dissociation. It handled suicide and survivors guilt. And people just... just didnt care, and I was made fun of for adoring him because I saw myself in him.

I dont even know why people were so prone to shitting on him. cuz he wasnt attractive? (Even tho he really is) because hes voiced by a woman? Probably something stupid. Probably because he leans more towards feminine traits than masculine and that belittles him?

I remeber when an ex-friend of mine had the audacity to get annoyed that Armin was crying and wanting to die after Eren was eaten during the invasion of Trost. As if....as if it was a babies reaction. "He should be fighting not wallowing, it's so annoying," like THIS MAN JUST WATCHED HIS BEST FRIEND GET EATEN and you think hes just gonna shrug it off? Fucking hell, he's human. It's a human reaction! "Mikasa was fine," no, no SHE WASNT. she tried to kill herself too! Because that's a human reaction to your loved ones getting brutally slaughtered.

Jokes on you lot. Because this useless character? Hes stepped into the protagonist role left behind when Eren became the Anti hero/antagonist and I couldnt be happier. Hes such a well written character and while I did not always agree, I love that Yams has clearly put so much thought into his character despite him not being a fan favourite.

Personally, Levi's monologue in chapter 136 bothered me a lot. There were more important things going on (Eren destroying the world, Levi being severely injured, Armin missing, his best friend dying) yet Isayama chose to focus on the promise. It almost felt like fanservice, and sometimes I wonder if that's all Levi was reduced to, in the end. Sometimes he really did feel like a flat character. Apologies if I sound too negative.

I suppose your bad experience with distorted ship discourse might be the source of the disappointment over this bit? And if it is, then, srly, whenever you feel like giving a 2nd chance to read it, try to do it forgetting all distorted ship reductions around Levi. His narrative goes so much more than this!!

I'm loving to see these people's reviews over Levi on Twitter: Peter, zeroTakes, shash, and malakeus. I'm sure when Levi gets back as focus in the anime, they will thread nice analysis on him too!!

In the meantime, if you allow me, I will write a bit on the matter of chapter 136 here!

The last time we had an inside of Levi's head moment was on chapter 112. There he is confused, dejected, angry, and in denial with a lot of things: Eren's betrayals; Zackley's death and Pixis surrender + plan to sacrifice Eren; the refusal to kill Eren because so many people had died to save the lil shit and the hopes he was supposedly carry; the 30 days secluded in that damn forest-prison with Zeke carrying out his plan behind his back. Levi is so concerned and utterly conflicted and pissed that he even suggested losing the only fail-safe Paradis had (aka the Rumbling) by feeding Zeke to a traitor Yeagerist until Hisu gave birth and could eat him.

He shared a few words with Hanji in the forest; then Hanji died without them discussing anything regarding the SC again but the "do you think they are watching?". Levi looks between destroyed, barely holding on, and Captain Levi up until 136. His narrative NEEDED his insight on the matters happening more than ever. That's when his monologue comes on point. And while I wrote this answer kinda bitter at the end of aot + Hanji's death, Levi's part still stands as of now for me.

I still love the fact that Levi addresses the vow as Erwin's last order. Isym didn't wrote it by mistake. And more than ever, again, Levi shows he is worried about what it meant the Survey Corps - Humanity’s supposedly Wings of Freedom. This is Isym using Levi - the most OP and why not to say beloved character of snk! - to AGAIN shut up the last people still insisting that The Rumbling was the right path. Or that Erwin and the vets would have supported it (srly, some people just don't get it even it being rubbed at their faces 🤦‍♀️).

I also love that this monologue also answers Levi's questions of chapter 112 - what was that hope we were looking at? Eren, the monster? The Devil? To which now Levi says, "No! I entrusted the future to the ones like Armin...". And while shippers tend to argue about the eyes representing Erwin in a romantic way, if you go to chapter 84, you will see Erwin's eyes looks free, imo. And all Levi ever wanted for everyone since ever was to conquer freedom for them.

The only thing I still feel kinda... unsatisfied with is the translation of the sentences/panels related to Hanji. Levi clearly is doing a parallel between her and Armin. And the WHOLE story can clearly tell why is that at this point - their personalities, their enchantment over the world, over life, their power to inspire people in a heartwarming way. I swear, I can totally see Hanji having a mind-wonder childhood like Armin too...

Sure, Armin is a gamechanger mastermind up to be on pair with Erwin's determination to do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals (from the beginning to chapter 90 we see this all). Armin is definitely the "future generation" snk always talked too. But Erwin's motto, until chapter 134 in Armin's mind, is basically "those who can't give something important to them can't accomplish anything", reminding everyone that Erwin is the symbol of ruthlessness and pragmatism rather than warmth and hope like Hanji.

And then there isn't a single time Levi remembers again seeing Erwin with free/soft eyes since chapter 84, much less 136. And them, even Erwin has his eyes focused on Hanji in this scene:

Sure it would be somewhat weird maybe? to see Erwin with softer eyes here, but come on - couldn't he at least show a kinder face or be looking somewhere else than Hanji to make sense of "what they devoted" look less Hanji-centered (and checking Erwin out the "they") than the drawing is clearly point out??? LOL

I know the word in Japanese Kodansha 1st used for "they" is translated not as simply "they" plural, but something like "this person + and people similar to them". And there is an abysmal difference between Erwin and Hanji core narratives. And also, the fact it's Hanji leading the fire camp like Armin leading the talk with Eren and Mika is the clear parallel here imo! So, yeah, this bit puzzles me as to wtf Isym really wanted to do here...

Bonus Pic of Levi almost smiling at Armin's enthusiasm because I love how soft Levi seems to look here - something between "tsk, this brat is a little fool" (lovingly) and "but it would be really good if the world was like this..."

It would be nice to hear Isym talking about Levi someday...
