Circles around the Sun and Mikaela Davis & Southern Star at Skully’s Music-Diner, Columbus, Ohio, March 20, 2024
Mikaela Davis wasn’t the headliner, but she was the star of the show.
The harpist and her band, Southern Star, opened for and sat in with Circles around the Sun at their March 20 gig inside Columbus, Ohio’s, Skully’s Music-Diner. And it was Davis who shone brightest on the darkened stage and who received the most enthusiastic response from the 150 or so mid-week concertgoers.
Having begun life as the Neal Casal-led studio outfit that recorded the PA music for the 2015 reunion of living Grateful Dead members known as Fare Thee Well, CATS weathered Casal’s 2019 suicide, finally settling on John Lee Shannon as the guitarist who would replace the irreplaceable and play and record alongside co-founding members keyboardist Adam MacDougall, bassist Dan Horne and drummer Mark Levy. More ethereal disco than Dead- and jam-oriented as they were in the beginning, the modern CATS is no longer the singular band it was. It is instead part of the larger space-trance genre. MacDougall’s white jacket and his and Shannon’s white loafers added to the leisure-suit-era feel of the gig.
With seven disco balls - four above the stage and three over the audience - Skully’s was decked out appropriately for such a vibe as Davis & Southern Star took the stage.
Seated at her classical instrument with her lime-green shoes cutting through the dim lights spinning off the mirrored orbs, Davis led the band through note-perfect renderings of songs from 2023’s And Southern Star. Drummer Alex Coté, bassist Shane McCarthy, Kurt Johnson on pedal steel and electric guitars and loops and Cian McCarthy on acoustic and electric guitars and saxophone spent 55 minutes running through such tracks as “Far from You,” “Cinderella” and “Leave it Alone” and in doing so continued carving out a place for their unique brand of orchestral, space-country music, reinforced by Johnson and Cian McCarthy’s overalls, where Davis’ harp serves as both lead and rhythm instrument as would keyboards in a more-mainstream act.
One such act is the 2024 edition of CATS, where MacDougall’s multiple sets of keys and electronic percussion drive the band’s dance music with programmed rhythm augmenting Levy’s four-on-the-floor drums, Horne’s chest-rattling bass and Shannon’s rhythm and occasional lead playing on such numbers as “Away Team,” “Outer Boroughs” and “Scarlotta’s Magnolias,” all of which eat up more than 10 of the band’s 90 minutes of stage time.
Undeniable musical chops notwithstanding, the contemporary CATS lacks the transcendence of the Casal era and have replaced it with mere fun. What was once an uninterrupted live-music journey is now a scattering of interesting moments.
Davis retuned to the stage to add harp and wordless vocals - a first for the all-instrumental CATS - to the title track and other cuts from the forthcoming After Sunrise joint EP from the touring partners. Though Davis’ presence reined in Circles’ orbit, it also steadied their wobble for the homestretch.

Dawes Delight Beacon Theatre with New Album

Dawes – Beacon Theatre – April 12, 2025
Some bands leave musical bookmarks in our lives, and for this writer, Dawes are one of them. Led by brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, they’ve collaborated with musicians from the Black Crowes to Taylor’s wife, Mandy Moore. And I first saw them live at their collaborative height, performing at the 2011 Newport Folk Festival as members of the folk supergroup Middle Brother, alongside Delta Spirt’s Matt Vasquez and Deer Tick’s John McCauley. Having been affected by the Eaton Fire, Dawes lent their musicianship to fundraise for the L.A. Fire Relief, playing “Time Spent in Los Angeles” at January’s FireAid benefit and anchored the opening of this year’s Grammy Awards with “I Love L.A.” with a star-studded lineup of Sheryl Crow, Brad Paisley, Brittany Howard, John Legend and St. Vincent.

These consummate partners graced the stage at the Beacon Theatre on Saturday, supporting their latest album, Oh Brother. Opening with the lead track, “Mister Los Angeles,” Dawes kicked in a rollicking evening that featured both new and old favorites. Concertgoers were quickly engaged, singing along to “Fire Away,” as the space was halved, with stage right harmonizing to “When you need someone to walk away from” and the left took the high harmony. Taylor reflected on “Time Spent in Los Angeles,” having sung it for more than a decade and how much of his life has been altered by the L.A. fires. He expressed gratitude for the support of his community and for fans in attendance on Saturday night.

In a truly memorable moment, Taylor took to the stage solo acoustic for the fan-favorite “When My Time Comes,” off the band’s 2009 debut LP, North Hills. The crowd was rapt with the quieter delivery of the often stadium level anthem. Regardless of its tenderness, folks couldn’t help but croon the chorus. Drummer (and younger brother) Griffin took the lead on Oh Brother’s “Enough Already,” while an acknowledgement for the effort to get out on a Saturday evening introduced “House Parties.” Taylor took to the keys for “A Little Bit of Everything,” and concluded the set with their 2015 album’s title track “All Your Favorite Bands.” To cap off the show, the band returned to play Randy Newman’s “ I Love L.A.,” which was joking suggested as a song that New Yorkers might enjoy for the first time. —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck

TERRAPIN CLUBHOUSE/DARKSTARATHON #9: PHIL LESH with Stu Allen, Jeremy Hoenig, Grahame Lesh, and Adam MacDougall
This is the same band that released last week the ultimate sandwich jam, the Playing in the Band>Uncle John’s Band>Morning Dew>Uncle John’s Band>Playing in the Band that was performed a few times in 1974. They handled it capably as a lean band with Adam MacDougall’s featured keyboards actually not all that present; Jeremy Hoenig’s drums, heavy on the tom toms, quite tasty; the Stu Allen/Grahame Lesh guitar duo meshing nicely; and lots of room for PHIL LESH to drive the bus.
This 30+ minute jam was more of the same but even more free form. MacDougall though was more prominent and the maestro was even more adventurous. It was all instrumental but they wandered into the actual Dark Star theme twice with definite bits of Terrapin, that big Let It Grow outro riff jam, and maybe West LA Fadeaway. It was very exploratory, so I’d like to believe that it was all in the moment. But it was also efficient and not self-indulgent, at least to an aficionado who has endured complaints from outsiders about the endless noodling of Grateful Dead music for a half a century.

Song Review: Phil Lesh & Friends - “My Favorite Things” (Live, Dec. 15, 2023)
“Do it again!,” a fan exclaimed after Phil Lesh & Friends played an extraordinary version of “My Favorite Things” in San Francisco.
And little wonder, as finger-tapping guitarist Stanley Jordan had taken the helm and for nine minutes transformed the former Grateful Dead bassist’s group into a jazz combo.
The rest of the players functioned as a rhythm section while Jordan did his thing. Stu Allen and Grahame Lesh searched for spots to place chords as drummer John Molo laid on the syncopation and bassist Lesh held the music together with obvious delight. Keyboardist Adam MacDougall was mostly silent.
The magic of the Dec. 15 performance is evident even on fan-shot video, on which audience members can be heard shitting themselves mid-song. When it ends, the response is so enthusiastic that even Grahame Lesh has to applaud as Jordan bows his head and waves to the crowd.
Now, let’s watch it again.

I'm sorry I'm letting my obsession with weird fucked up experiments and scientific history show but I just gotta talk about this thing.
In April 1901, Duncan MacDougall was hellbent on the idea that humans had souls and that, for some inexplicable reason, had mass. He had gotten six patients in total (which is a study group far too small for a typical experiment but honestly I'm glad MacDougall didn't get his hands on any more people). Each patient had some sort of illness, most having tuberculosis, and had only a couple hours left to live. MacDougall placed the patients on a scale that could register grams and waited like 2-4 hours for each patient to kick the bucket.
The ending result was that each patient had lost some weight postmortem. However, each patient lost different amounts. One patient lost 3/4ths of an ounce (21.30 g) but?? other ones had significantly different ones too??? One lost a half of an ounce (14.17 g) and another lost 3/8ths of an ounce (10.63 g)??? Wildly differing results, which MacDougall acknowledged, but it still doesn't prove anything. He also excluded two patients due to one dying five minutes before they could properly set things up and another because of a scale mishap.
Obviously there's a ton of factors at play when a patient dies, some of which MacDougall mentions. He argues against the patients losing mass due to sweat and waste excretion. I still think there's still other things at play. Gas leaving the body can account for a bit of the lost mass. There's probably more but I'm not an anatomy student and I think you can probably rationalize there being reasons for why a person may lose weight. Not to also mention that the patients were already losing mass at a certain rate even before they expired.
Then of course MacDougall couldn't stop there so he had the brilliant idea of going: "So, humans definitely have souls (because I said so) but because we are the children of Adam and much more important we have souls but not animals (because I said so)" and decided to do the same experiment but on 15 dogs. He poisoned dogs. He killed dogs because he wanted to prove his hypothesis. This of course is later debunked with livestock like sheep and such again losing mass upon death.
I get flashbacks to the Andrew Wakefield "vaccines cause autism because of the bowl disease I just made up" paper cause it too had similar small sample sizes and a general disregard for, well, ethics. MacDougall said that they would have to do further experimentation, but the reason we haven't was because the experiment was because a) it was seen as unethical even back then and b) why would we do that?? Souls in most iterations and beliefs are a force not too dissimilar to energy. Why would we sink efforts into watching people die and weigh them when we know that they very well just lose weight already when they're about to die?
The history of science is so fascinating cause you constantly get wackjobs like these. It's fun :]
Y'all ever think about the 21 grams "experiment" where a crackpot physician who wanted to see if souls were real put terminally ill patients on a scale and watched them die so he could see how heavy their bodies were postmortem. Yeah what was up with that
