“K SIDE: PURPLE 08”

Looking at the customer who entered, Taka-san widened his eyes.

Isshin Hase, a man who settled in "Niibangai" about half a year ago. He was a big man with muscular bones, and if he had had the aptitude, he could have been hired by this "Massive Boys", but for now, he "established himself as a goalkeeper for all of Niibangai".

Hase looked confused while he was at the store entrance. It is not surprising. "Massive Boys" is a so-called "tourist bar" that anyone can walk into, but there are chaotic fluorescent neon signs, bondage fashion Greek sculptures, and bright posters of gay porn stars all over the store. At first glance, customers are often confused and some leave the store immediately.

"Sensei, come here."

When Taka-san beckoned, Hase looked relieved and walked over to the counter. When he put his giant body on a stool, he looked like one of the figures in the store.

Taka-san laughs a bit as he hands him a hand towel.

"Welcome. It's rare for Sensei to come to us."

"Um, well, that's right. I'm not good at these kinds of places."

Taka-san is in awe of the wording. Since Hase was in a hurry, he wondered why he had come if he wasn't good at it, or what if he said it in front of them.

"Oh, no, no! It's not about you, there's just no green tea in this place to drink. Sorry."

Taka-san involuntarily bursts out laughing. It seems true that he wasn't good at socializing, although he didn't have to panic.

"Well, that's correct. Sure, you can't drink?"

"Um, I can't."

"Ah, I'm not serious. I apologize, we have many other non-alcoholic drinks."

He glanced sideways and pointed at Chief Satoshi. He saw this person, so the instructions mean that others are welcome. Satoshi looked ahead and yelled, he came out of the counter to stop an employee who is getting involved with a customer.

Taka-san turns to Hase and says with a soft smile.

"So what are you going to do, Sensei?"

"That's right. I'll order a sake that I can drink."

"Yes."

Taka-san took the shaker. There was no doubt that Hase asked for that for his sake. There are days when he still wants to drink alcohol that he cannot drink. He has been doing this kind of business for a long time, so he knows it.

He adds syrup, sugar and lemon to some cocoa liquor and shake it. Transferring it to a glass, he poured in sparkling water and was slightly driven, Taka-san presented the glass in front of Hase.

"Yes, please. Cacao Fiz. It has less alcohol, so feel free to drink."

"Oh, thanks."

He raised the glass with a nervous hand, and took a sip. Hase's eyes widened.

"Uh, it tastes good."

"Thank you."

Taka-san smiled. Hase tipped his glass again and drank several times.

He wondered what happened.

For half a year after the gangster attacked, Hase has solved many problems in "Niibangai". There are many people, including Taka-san, who have been helped and protected by him. Still, his good-natured personality who never snorts his achievements, was welcomed favorably by the "Niibangai" neighbors.

Still, Taka-san doesn't know Hase's details. Also Mi-chan and Seiya. He is forbidden to snoop unnecessarily, which was implicitly a rule of thumb in "Niibangai", which has many wounds on its inhabitants.

So Taka-san didn't force him to answer, he just shook off the little talk.

"How about these days? What about Mishakuji-chan?"

Hase laughs on one cheek. A sip of cocoa and then a sip of words.

"His sword is..."

"Yes?"

"I was right. That boy has a good sword."

For a moment, Taka-san didn't understand what Hase was saying.

Hase's ability is brute force. He has taken down several thugs in the blink of an eye. He was not sure about the sword, but he could understand through common sense that he had been studying for many years and that his technique cannot be surpassed by one half.

That is to say…

"Why are you asking that all of a sudden?"

"I heard you promised Sayuri to try to avoid injury. Until now, you've been hitting with a move that doesn't care, but it seems like you've decided to change that."

"……"

"The word genius is lukewarm. Yukari is real, so is his ability."

Speaking to himself, Hase set the empty glass on the counter.

"Give me a refill."

"Yes."

While preparing a new cocktail, Taka-san implicitly observed Hase's expression.

Hase seemed to be laughing. Eyes closed and thoughtful, his lips formed a slight smile. But Taka-san didn't know what he thought was true. What do people feel when they are outmatched by humans for just half a year after many years of research? Only the person knows.

"He's a great kid. That's it."

Taka-san is even more cheerful as he pours a new cocktail into the glass.

"Yeah, he really does cause that feeling, right? Mishakuji-chan is amazing. He's been able to do anything for a long time, he's smart, he has a good face. It's weird that he's in a place like this."

Hase smiles bitterly as he looked at the glass that Taka-san gave him.

"A place like this, is a greeting. I wonder if this is where I live."

"Yes. "Niibangai" is certainly our place. But after all, it is a place like this."

Taka-san turned his gaze towards the shop, saying that selfishly. The burly men in XL evening gowns and prima donna suits hold their glasses cross-shouldered and the singing voice is out of tune.

"Drop something, run away from something. This is a mound of snow where these people gather. The more time we spend here, people like me, Mi-chan, Seiya, Sayuri, we have no place to stay other than here."

Hase's glass was empty. Taka-san unconsciously poured half sake.

"But Mishakuji-chan is different. Since he is a big boy, it is possible that he can fly to a wide world that we cannot imagine. I think he is a boy, who unlike us who cannot escape, can open up by himself One Way."

Taka-san says that, narrowing his eyes.

Mishakuji Yukari was certainly such an existence for the people of "Niibangai". Hope and possibility. Being able to fly to places where they can never go. That's why everyone who likes Yukari feels that he is not suitable for this place.

"Escape."

Suddenly, Hase's face was dyed bright red and the giant swayed. Taka-san rushes to replace the glass.

"My God, I wonder if I drank too much. Water, water."

"Hm..."

Hase looks at the water that Taka-san offered him. Hase flutters with some drunken eye flashes.

"I'm the same. I wonder if it was fate that brought me here."

"……"

Do not poke around uselessly. That is the "Niibangai" rule. They all have the same scars that they don't want to be explored.

However, you cannot live with your own pain forever. There are times when you still want to spit out the scars you don't want to find. In such a case, listen to the story silently. That's not "Niibangai's" rule, it was Taka-san's rule.

"Why did you come here, Sensei?"

When Taka-san poured the water, Hase leaned his elbows on the counter, closed his eyes, and began to speak slowly.

"I betrayed my friend and ran away from him."

The Miwa Meishinryu Dojo was located near Hase's birthplace.

He doesn't remember why he got a sword. He was not good at socializing due to his natural nature, and he believed that swinging a stick was easier than playing with friends at school. There were few outsiders who bothered to learn old-fashioned swordplay, and it was even rarer when they were younger, and there was only one disciple his own age.

That was Miwa Ichigen's school.

Miwa was the grandson of the owner of the dojo, a boy who was sought out to take over the Miwa Meishin style. For that reason, it seems that he was strictly taught not only the sword, but also all martial arts and etiquette. From the boy Hase's perspective, Miwa seemed to have little time to break free.

However, he didn't make sense of Miwa's character. He always had a spring breeze atmosphere that made his feel relaxed just by being next to him. It wasn't a bother for Hase, who wasn't good at socializing, to be around Miwa. Not only was he a friend of the sword of the same age, but Hase and Miwa believed that they fit together in terms of personality.

However, even Hase often couldn't understand Miwa.

For example, while he was practicing in the presence of a sword, there was a moment when he suddenly lost his head. Even if it's practice, if the hit is bad, it will hurt. Since he knew, he should have to put stress on his whole body, but Miwa just looked somewhere far away, and sometimes his heart wasn't even there.

And Hase couldn't attack Miwa. He should be full of spaces, but there was no possibility of attacking anywhere. He was caught up in the premonition that a ridiculous counterattack would ensue the moment he hit him, and he had no choice but to turn Miwa around. Meanwhile, both of them were severely scolded by the owner of the dojo.

"Hey. What the hell was that?"

After a day of practice, Hase scold Miwa.

Half intended to complain. Both of them were ordered to clean the entire dojo as punishment for clumsy practice. He couldn't help but wonder why he wasn't fed up with Miwa, but he couldn't think of beating Miwa if he acted immature in front of him.

As he squeezed the cloth he had just lifted from the bucket, Miwa asked mysteriously.

"What's that?"

"That's it. It's like you go somewhere from time to time, whatever you're practicing. It's hard to do and I can't get over you."

"Ah..."

Miwa was a bit shy.

"That's the word that comes to mind."

"Word?"

"Yeah. Words that usually come to mind that aren't cohesive probably come together at that moment, and then my head goes that way."

He has turned his lips into a sword. He knew from his long relationship that Miwa wasn't teasing him.

"I do not know why."

"Yes. I really don't get it."

"I can't understand what you don't understand."

Having said that, Hase smiled bitterly. The one who laughed was the loser. He placed both hands on the mop placed on the floor and cleaned as he took a step. Hase lecture Miwa that he was a little late.

"If those words come together, let me know."

Miwa also laughed a bit and replied.

"Yes. I'll tell you when the time comes."

In the future, Miwa will be the owner of the Miwa Meishin-style dojo. Become a friend of Miwa, he will have the level of a teacher, sometimes they would exchange swords, teach the sword technique to the neighborhood children and hear those "words" one day. Somehow, Hase envisioned that future.

So when he heard that Miwa was leaving the house, he wasn't surprised at all.

Hase and Ichigen Miwa's sword arms were almost the same, but their heads were different.

When he heard that Miwa would be enrolled in the highest school in the country, he thought reflexively, "This guy will do long before breakfast."

But he really didn't understand. Why wasn't he the successor to the dojo? What happened to the promise to hear the "words"? Does he throw the sword? Out of anger, Hase was asking that question in quick succession.

Miwa was a bit embarrassed, as he bent his neck.

"No. I'm sure I'll be waving my sword wherever I am."

Then, with a look soft like a spring breeze, he added:

"The 'words' are not organized yet. Once they are organized, I'll show them to you first."

"Really?"

Hase had no choice but to say so. There were no other words.

The difference between him and Miwa was clearly shown.

First of all, he was a different person than him, who was not good at socializing because he was careless and had no choice but to cling to this land while he brandished his sword. Miwa, she was smart and had many brilliant talents. He was a person who could advance to a larger world for a better future. It was just that Hase was so crazy that he thought he must be around him all the time.

"Do not feel alone."

The words that came out of his mouth surprised him. He should be pleased with the prosperity of his friend, but the first thing that comes up is his feeling. Masochistically, he thought that place would be different without him.

Still, Miwa smiled and replied.

"Me too. I will be a teacher who teaches from the heart."

Then, Miwa flew all over the world.

Shortly after Miwa disappeared, Hase became the teacher of the Miwa Meishin school.

It seems that the owner of the dojo still wanted Miwa to take over the dojo. The instructor would only be Miwa, and he claimed that he was in the middle of a "long absence". That was not important to Hase. He was not interested in the position or title as long as he could live wielding his sword, he thought it was the most suitable life for him.

Meanwhile, almost 10 years have passed.

One day, Miwa came by chance.

After graduating from high school, he heard that he got a job in an overseas securities company and that he is doing a great job. It would be a lie not to say that his friend was living a completely different life from his, and that he didn't feel alone, but when he thought "that's what it is", it was a story he could swallow. He thought that he had found something that could be the basis for him, just like he was living with a sword.

The face of his friend that he saw after a long time seemed to be dead.

Hase looked at his face seriously, and Miwa smiled like a spring breeze, as in the past.

"I'm sick. I left the company."

If asked, it seems that dark circles floated under his eyes and his body was thin. Hase could only imagine what a foreign securities company would look like, but it was probably a hostile environment that could damage the trained body with a sword. Hase ran into a friend, who fell ill and eventually returned from an unknown land.

"Miwa. Stay here forever. This is your home."

With a smile on his face, he shook his head gently.

"No. This is your dojo. I decided to retreat into the distance."

Hase opened his eyes. He didn't know what Miwa was thinking.

He said that he will soon go somewhere even though he had returned. Miwa took Hase's hand and said, wondering if such doubts had appeared on his face.

"It is said that good air is better for me. I can go calmly because you are in charge of this dojo."

"……"

"I lost the Miwa Meishin style."

When he told him that, Hase couldn't do anything else.

That night. Hase saw Miwa in the Kendo room.

Miwa dressed in a sash and calmly waved a wooden sword. It was probably because of the feeling that he was sick and did such a thing. It is a dojo where he spent his childhood and youth. Miwa who returned after a long time, thought it was inevitable that he would want to breathe the air of the dojo even if he made his sick.

"I understand your feelings, but don't overdo it."

He tried to yell that when he saw it.

Miwa, waved his sword as if dancing. As if running water flowed incessantly, his feet and the sword of judgment as well, they never stayed in one place.

Silently, gracefully, without the gap of habit, Miwa manipulated the wooden sword lightly.

It was hard to believe that this sick man was away from the sword for many years.

Indescribable discomfort hit Hase's chest. When he realized it, he was entering the kendo room. Hase didn't stop even if he looked back in surprise when he noticed that.

Miwa unexpectedly pointed at his throat.

"Miwa, fix things with me."

Hase, unknowingly holding a wooden sword that he hung on the wall in one hand, raised it unconsciously.

His bloodied eyes are wide open, his shoulders are tight, and his lips are tight. When he saw Hase, he had a sad expression on his face.

"Oh, I…"

"Don't say anything. I ask you to fix things with me."

Then Hase held his sword to his eyes.

Miwa was silent for a while. He had his face down, so Hase didn't know what kind of expression he had. With a wooden sword in his hands, he said in a hazy voice.

"I will not reduce the number of hits."

"Try this. I will never forgive you."

Miwa looked directly at Hase and held his sword in the top row.

That only made the skin all over his body crawl.

He didn't want to admit it. He couldn't forgive him. However, as a grave fact, he stood in front of Hase.

Miwa was stronger than him. Much stronger.

He couldn't admit it.

Hase was surprised that such pride lurked in him. Hase saw himself as a disinterested and cheerful person just by wielding his sword.

But that meant that if he turned it over, he only had one sword. He thought that he wouldn't lose, even if it was Miwa. No matter how beautiful he was, no matter how glamorous he was in the world, only the sword. He only believed in this way of life, yet somewhere in his being, he believed that he was inferior to Miwa.

He was crushed.

The moment he saw the sword dance, he knew that he was in a situation where he couldn't even compete with Miwa. He was sick. He believed that he had been working for a company for a long time.

Miwa was much more skilled than him, who has directly thrust the sword.

He couldn't forgive him.

Miwa, no. He cannot forgive himself. The chief was not skilled enough to trick him into pretending not to see him. All feelings and consideration turned to dust at that moment. Isshin Hase had to challenge Ichigen Miwa.

Miwa with the sword in the top row had a transparent expression. The expression was familiar. It's the expression he used to have when he practiced, when his heart was going somewhere.

The facial expression when the "words" arise

At that moment, he couldn't hit him. He had a feeling that he was going to receive a terrible counterattack and could only turn around.

But now…

If he didn't hit him now, he will regret it for the rest of his life.

"Oooooooooooooh!"

Driven by thoughts of him, Hase kicked the dojo floor. A reverse kasaya that appears to be licked from the bottom left. He fired the strongest blow of his life.

And…

"So what happened?"

Taka-san asked in a low voice, looking at Hase, who has fallen onto the counter.

"Fu…"

With his forehead pressed against the counter, Hase shook his shoulders and laughed.

"Of course I lost. No matter how many times I tried, I couldn't even touch it with the sword."

"……"

"The next morning, Miwa left. He left a letter."

There was a brief goodbye and a "word" in which the words were finally joined. No words of apology were written. Hase was saved by that.

"The next morning I left the dojo. I should have decided once that it was my place to live. I couldn't bear to be there anymore."

If he entered the dojo and swung his sword, he would remember that night. When he realized that, his life was worth nothing.

"I ran away. I left the dojo that night. For the very fact that I couldn't get over Miwa. I left the dojo that Miwa had entrusted to me and the disciples who trusted me, I fled, kept running, and then I came here."

Hase laughed deep in his throat, lifting his flushed face and squeezing it.

"I tried to assume that Miwa was special. He was a monster given two or three times by the sky. Then Yukari appeared."

With a laugh, Hase covered his eyes with his big palm.

"When I saw his movement today, I remembered Miwa that night. I moved like I danced and didn't stop. It's funny, right? After running away from a monster, I ended up meeting another monster. Kukuku…"

Hase kept laughing deep in his throat. Maybe he wasn't laughing. Thinking like this, Taka-san gently walked away.

"In the end, I can't. I couldn't beat him or forgive myself for losing. I saw Yukari today and I remembered him. I'm a useless person."

Taka-san thinks that there are two types of people who despise themselves.

Someone who wants you to deny it, and some who really believe it.

Hase now is probably the last. There was an opponent who lived with a sword and still couldn't beat him. He doesn't think he can understand all the regrets, despair and helplessness at that time. Suffering can only be understood by the person who tasted it.

However, there was still a problem with Hase.

"Miwa, right? I have never met him, but I am grateful to that person."

When Taka-san said, Hase looked up mysteriously.

"Because without that person, I could have been dead."

Hase looks at Taka-san with drunken eyes. Taka smiled, poured water into the glass, and presented it to Hase.

"Isn't that true? If you had overcome that feeling before that person, you wouldn't be here right now. Then I could have been stabbed by that yakuza and would die."

"……"

"It's not just me. It's the same for Mishakuji-chan. He could have been seriously injured protecting me, and that boy could have died if you hadn't intervened. Right?"

Hase shook his head, saying that he couldn't turn his head properly. Taka-san sighed and looked directly at Hase.

"You may have lost. You may have escaped, thrown away, betrayed and come here. But there are people who have been saved."

"……"

"So don't say you're worthless, much less say that in front of Mishakuji-chan, because he respects you."

"Does he respect me?"

Hase repeated it, like the words he heard for the first time. As he looked down at the glass.

"But eventually he will be stronger than me."

"But now you are still that child's teacher."

Hase was listening to the words and sinking into the depths of the water in the glass.

"So, be proud and be like a teacher. Not for you, but for Mishakuji-chan. One day when that child leaves the nest, you will be able to proudly say, 'Isshin Hase taught him the sword.'"

Hase was silent for a while.

Taka-san didn't say anything else. He thought it was Hase's problem. After all, Hase himself is the only one who can come out of despair and suffering.

"So is."

Finally, Hase muttered and crept into his chest.

What he took out of it was a messy piece of paper. It was slightly dirty and covered with hand stains, and the written characters were not clear. However, Hase squinted to see the precious written treasure and murmured.

"I may have come here for that."

Social Justice is kind of like religion - and that's okay

From New Atheist circles, you hear a lot that fourth wave feminism, especially the intersectional kind, is like organized religion. Needless to say, this is not intended as a compliment. However, 'as a Christian' (that phrase I can't) I see the similarities as well, but in a more neutral way. Yes, social justice as we know it right now on the left shares some parallels with religion, in my view. This has, just as those aspects do in (my) religion, upsides and downsides, depending on how you express them.

DISCLAIMER: the title of this post is a bit misleading. I know most about Christianity, which is the tradition that I'll be drawing from. That being said, there are many shared principles in different religions, in particular among monotheist ones. Then again, others are more unique to my religion or just less central in Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Wicca, etc. But I'm not an expert on those, so sadly I can't go into them. I'm always eager to learn, so please please please consider what parallels your own religion has to social justice and add them.

Born in Sin Christianity (perhaps more than any other major religion?) has a tradition of emphasising the inherent sinfulness of humans. We are born into a fallen world because of what took place in Genesis, which is why we need some sort of redemption coming from God. Now the redemption narrative I find it harder to locate in intersectional leftism BUT we are definitely 'born in sin'. At least that's how I understand the idea of being unavoidably racist as non-POC, inescapably sexist as men, inherently homophobic as straight people, etc. We carry unintended biases against marginalised groups (inherently sinful) because we grow up in societies that are hostile towards them (patriarchy, heteronormativity, ableism). The 'fallen world' taints us.

Now here's the good in this (Is there a good thing?!). If you handle this correctly in Christianity, it creates a very compassionate environment. 'You made a mistake? Well, that's wrong but we are all imperfect. Now we'll help you overcome that.' (More on the latter later.) The same thing should, in my view, be aimed for in social justice. Yes, condemn racism and homophobia where you find it. Point it out. But don't do it menacingly, especially if it's a case of prejudice that the perpetrator probably adopted from wider society. Don't kill sexists, kill sexism. It also makes us aware of weaknesses. If I know I'm inherently tempted by sin, I can keep an eye out for temptation.

Doing this one wrong is easier than doing it right. It can lead to, first of all, defeatism. 'Well, we're sinful anyway. Nothing I do matters because I'm evil anyway.' This, obviously, is unhealthy and useless. Don't accept your own societal conditioning. It's something you can fight against. Alternatively, you can hate yourself. Naturally, I wouldn't recommend that, though I have had a taste of that in my teenage years. 'I'll never be good enough for God.' Remember, you feeling guilty about your prejudices means two things: 1. You're one step ahead in defeating them. You can solve a problem only when you're aware of it. 2. This guilt blocks you from doing so. Guilt paralyses people. Turn it into something proactive. 'This is my weakness. Watch me obliterate it.'

The drive to self-improve This one is, I'm quite sure, almost universal among religions. We're all trying to overcome our own flaws to get closer to God/a higher reincarnation (Hindu people, correct me please)/Enlightenment/whatever your religion is trying to achieve. This is something I love in intersectional leftism/feminism. We are so driven to improve ourselves, to correct the problematic ways of thinking we have, to learn about other perspectives to become a more compassionate human being.

There is a trap, though, connected to our 'born in sin' principle. Here's the deal, at least in Christianity (most denominations) (I think Enlightenment can be perfect (?)): You will never be perfect. You will never reach God on your own. We need the redemption part. And some Christians, myself included, can get existential crises over this. Similarly, people in social justice can feel pressured to perfect themselves, something that is literally impossible because you're dealing with people. Some marginalized people want you to do x, others prefer y. None of us can be 100% woke all of the time. Don't damage your mental health over that. Ate meat as a vegan? Don't beat yourself up over it. Misgendered a trans person by accident? That can happen, try to damage control by reaching out perhaps (trans people, correct me please), but don't cry for 4 hours or anything. Living means harming, no matter how hard you try.

Spreading the gospel (oh no why) Trying to 'educate people' is an inherent part of most types of Christianity. It is also a very interesting thing to me. What's most effective? Is raising Christian children indoctrination? Should we try to convert Muslims and Jews (sit down, Evangelicals, some people believe this to be a question)? Lead by example? Sometimes I even find that annoying (and I'm already on their side). The questions in social justice are equally numerous. Is it my job to educate you? Is the Women's March useful? Should I mention communism? To be intersectional or to focus on a specific issue? To be honest, I don't even know how to advise on this one. Christianity and intersectional leftism come down to the same matter, though: how to attract instead of repulse.

A DESIGNER’S EYE FOR PREPRESS

What’s better than a prepress operator with analytic skills? One with technical chops and seasoned graphic design background. That just so happens to describe Phil Griffith, a prepress operator at Columbine Label Company. It’s a position he never imagined himself enjoying when he first started his creative career.

A GRAPHIC START

“I was a freelance graphic designer for years,” Phil explains. “It’s a good way to build relationships and help people achieve what they are really looking for.” As a graphic designer for mostly print work, Phil became well versed in a variety of graphic design software and how to properly set up files for printing that reduce potential issues. A stint in marketing followed a few years later. Then Phil came across a prepress position for a commercial printer. “I’m a pretty creative person, but I thought I’d give it a try,” he recalls. “I ended up loving prepress. It appeals to my analytical side…making sure files are set up correctly and helping customers learn the ins and outs of print.”

Making the move to Columbine Label Company

After a decade at his previous job, Phil was ready for something more challenging and came across an opening for a prepress operator at Columbine Label Company in 2018. Phil beat out over 120 applicants, and he’s never looked back. “I’m so lucky to be here. It’s such a great place to work,” he says. “You can tell the companies that care about their employees and Columbine Label is one of them.”

Rewarding work

For Phil, no two days are ever the same at work. “Every day is an opportunity to problem-solve,” he explains. “And the graphic designer in me is always interested to see all the different label designs that come in and how we can get them to work the way they were intended.”

Phil finds that the Columbine Label’s focus on teamwork and customer service are crucial differentiating factors. “We work really well as a team. Our priority is making sure customers are happy with the end product.” To that end, Phil says he works hard to make sure the next person who touches the job doesn’t have to do anything extra. “I want to make sure I’ve done everything possible to make things easier for the next person in line. If you’re doing your job and encounter fewer issues, then you’re going to enjoy your job more.”

prepare files in CMYK color mode, not RGB

submit vector files (preferably created in Illustrator) rather than bitmap files created in Photoshop or third-party software such as Canva

include a bleed if there are images or colors that go to the edge of the trim

add a layer of white to the artwork that will be printed on a clear or metallic material

include a die-line in the artwork to ensure production accuracy

barcodes should be black only and be at 80% magnification or more so that they will scan easily

They protested near the prime minister's residence with the piety of believers and suffered insults, beatings and arrests. Now that the Netanyahu family is packing, the main activists are concluding a period, but for some of them a protest is far from over.

Last Saturday night it was the first time in four years that Sami Alkalay did not go to the demonstration. "I've been missing two or three for four years," he admits after a thought. Instead of a demonstration he went with his wife to a movie. On the way they passed near Balfour. Several demonstrators gathered and shouted "Get out," in protest of the refusal of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the official residence. "I saw them together, and I did not miss it . I had done what needed to be done," Alkalay says.

There were bigger protests than the Balfour protest, but there seemed to be no more determined ones. Yesterday (Thursday), the black flag movement also announced that it had achieved its goal: "Removing the greatest threat to the State of Israel from the chair of the state's leadership," the statement said.

Thousands of activists have devoted a significant portion of their lives to protesting against Netanyahu. Most of them had not been political activists before, but in the last four years, and especially in the year since the major protests began in Balfour, they have made the political protest against Netanyahu an integral part of their lives and identities. They came to Balfour with the piety of believers, quarreled with family members and friends who were bibists or skeptics, invested thousands of shekels of their money in travel and signs, and suffered insults and beatings from right-wing activists and police arrests. Now that the main purpose of the protest has been successfully crowned and the Netanyahu family is packing their belongings at the official residence, they look back with pride, and forward with a little apprehension - about Netanyahu's return or corruption, but also about boredom.

Natanya Ginzburg, 82, a native of South Africa who walks with two walking sticks, was one of the symbols of the protesters in Balfour. Every week she used to not only come to the demonstration in Balfour, but also to the String Bridge, at the entrance to Jerusalem, and from there to Paris Square along with the crowds. "I had a hard time with going up of Bezalel street which is very steep," she admits. In addition to the demonstrations near the prime minister's residence, she demonstrated with her friends at the "Migdal Nofim" sheltered housing complex in the Kiryat Hayovel neighborhood at the Monster Junction. Like many activists, she too has experienced violence from right-wing activists. During one of the demonstrations at the intersection, she was knocked down in an alteracation by a right-wing activist who got out of his vehicle. "I had no dizziness, I had no nausea. Nothing that a glass of whiskey can solve," she replied to the paramedic who asked that she be be evacuated. In another case, she was attacked by two in the Mahane Yehuda market. "I went with a T-shirt by Yeshayahu Leibowitz that says 'I told you so,'" she says. "I was alone in the market. He passed by a couple and started cursing me and dancing around me and saying it was a pity they didn't make me soap. It was not pleasant, but I got used to it too." Despite this she admits she will miss Balfour: "I will not miss the noise, but the young people, even though sometimes the attention was embarrassing to me, encouraged me saying that because of me they feel they have to keep going."

Meir (Moscow) Moskowitz was one of the permanent occupants of the sidewalk in front of the Prime Minister's residence. Until four years ago he was never in a demonstration. Like many, he finds it difficult to put his finger on a single incident that caused him to come, but the combination of the submarine affair and the dismissal of Mani Naftali, the head of the house at the Prime Minister's Residence, caused him to start protesting in Goren Square in Petah Tikva. “Like someone becoming a football fan, that’s how I became active in protest,” he says. "A lot of people said to me, 'What do you need this for?' "They understood that I was stubborn. To their credit, the day a new government was formed, they sent me WhatsApps and wrote that it was because of me, even though I did not think so."

Danny Danieli, former director of cultural institutions in Jerusalem and now an organizational consultant, joined the protest four and a half years ago. "There were moments I had a hard time," he says. "There were cold and stormy evenings. We had terrible years in Paris Square. Sometimes 20 people and sometimes 25. You seem to be the only one in the world who cares. But I said I was here until a result was achieved. When the young people started joining, I said 'no matter what happens, I dedicate it to All the time it takes. "

Many activists report criticism and misunderstanding from friends and family over the years of protest. "I heard it a lot," says Alkalay, "treated me like a hallucinatory god. 'What are you standing there for? It won't help.' I even had bitter arguments with my wife." "Family and friends is a sore point," Danieli adds. "I have friends who have disappointed me, people who did not have a different position in terms of the need for change, but they did not leave the house."

"My father would say to me, 'Find a life, make your home,' but in my eyes I do for my home, because I am really worried about the future of my children. That is why I am struggling," says Adv. Gonen Ben Yitzhak, a senior activist in the Crimea Minster movement.

"My brother said to me 'Leave, who will pay attention to you?' Says Rami Matan, 70, who is also a veteran of the protesters. Matan is the chairman of his hometown, Nataf in the Jerusalem mountains. He is a former IDF and police officer and was a battalion commander on the Chinese farm during the Yom Kippur War. "I never dreamed I would confront police," he says. Matan stood in the square with Alkalay and others. Three years before Amir Hashakel, the prominent protest activists, came for his Shabbat strike, which turned Paris Square into “Balfour Square.” “I told my wife that was my mission now. This is my life's mission, "he says. He was arrested twice - the first time after drawing the word" you "on the road at the Hemed interchange, and the second time after police came to his home on suspicion of hoarding equipment intended for an illegal demonstration." They claimed we were planning to break into the house of the Prime Minister, "he says." I told them, 'Are you crazy?' "

Since the election, Moskowitz has stopped coming to demonstrations and decided to wait and see what happens. Last week he demonstrated again, this time in front of the home of the new health minister, Nitzan Horowitz, in protest of the extension of the Corona emergency laws. "Everyone is in a coma, wanting to give the new government a chance, so there are not too many partners. But I'm waiting," he says. "I treat this government the way I treated the previous one - I don't make a distinction between right and left. I have a lot of good friends I knew in protest, but I don't need friends meetings. It was not a friends meeting for me. It was a war."

"I even shed a tear," Matan admits, recounting the day the new government was sworn in. "It was a huge relief. We did not get to rest and estate. There is still a lot to fix. Now I take care of the garden. I neglected it and the house as well."

Like many others in the protest, Ginzburg is now directing her activist energies to protest against the occupation and stepping up her activities in the Machsom Watch organization and in demonstrations against the settlers in Sheikh Jarrah. "I'll find something to deal with," she says, "but I was actually willing to be a little boring."

Week 4 Mastery Journal - Organizational Structures

Connecting / Synthesizing/Transforming

According to Cousins of Design Shack, kinetic typography is a great tool to utilize in projects where you want to create emotional content or capture attention. Kitney of Creativeblog provides an area with many examples of creative kinetic typography and they many emotions it can emphasis. A connection can be made between the two of these resources that shows kinetic typography can cover a wide variety of projects and the entire spectrum of emotions all based upon how animated text is utilized. For instance, fast moving or shaky objects can emphasize a chaotic or fast paced environment. Where slow moving texts and animations can be utilized to emphasize a sad or even peaceful emotions. Research has also shown that an audience is more likely to be captured by animated text versus the use of static typography (Abry, 2012). To show this in my work I had chosen to create a kinetic typography video based on the chaotic ramblings of Donald Trump. To emphasize how he is all over the place in his speech with no coherent thoughts, I chose to have the typography appear on the screen from many different angles in a quick and chaotic manner. The use of color was also used to emphasize different words such as highlighting a question mark in red when even though the speaker was asking the question it was meant to emphasize that we as the audience want to know that same thing (e.g. why would anyone go see him talk).

Problem Solving

During this months' work one problem that I experienced occurred during the motion movie poster project. In this project we were given a poster that we were to animate into a motion movie poster. This is a process that can help a movie poster come to life (McGregor, 2017). The problem that I encountered was that the tutorial of the project assumed that you already had a specific baseline knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and skipped the steps needed to break down the image into a format that could be easily used for motion movie posters (C.M. de la VEGA, 2017). One solution to solve this would be to watch a tutorial specific to the skills that I needed which were to break down a flat image into a multi-layer image while preserving the background. Another option would be to try to find a tutorial that included every step from the beginning without any assumptions. Since I felt more comfortable than I had with the Adobe suite in the past, I opted to find a tutorial about removing objects in photoshop while preserving the background instead of looking for an all in one solution. For this I found a video that focused primarily on removing objects since I already knew how to create and add layers (Photoshop Tutorials by Webflippy, 2018). In the end the project was a success and I was able to create a movie poster that looked as if the mummy was moving and the environment felt like it was lit with a lantern light flickering. Thought I still have some room for improvement as you can still see a bit of the background that does not quite look natural and could be blended a bit better.

Innovative Thinking:

Comparing how my work compares to others is a bit hard at this point with such a limited portfolio. At this point there is still a ton I need to learn on the technical side to truly be competitive among my peers. As for my kinetic typography assignment, it shows both innovative thinking as well as copying elements or styles from existing artists. My design for instance was inspired by the design by StepDraw where they created a kinetic typography video based off a skit from the show The Office (Stepdraw, 2015). The inspiration of which topic to focus my kinetic typography came from a Rolling Stones article about a Trump speech in which he talks of how great a speaker is, then proceeds to ramble complete non-sense (Bort, 2018). In this case I feel the design itself was innovative as it did not follow too closely to the original inspiration, but shared some elements. Realistically innovative thinking is in the eye of the viewer as some people may view what innovation is differently from simple changes to completely new ideas (Owen, 2012).

Acquiring Competencies

This entire month was filled with learning new concepts and technologies.

1. Adobe Premiere

a. This software suite was a new experience for me and provides a powerful tool for video editing.

b. This skill set can be used in both the academic and professional environments.

c. The premiere suite a was a new technical skill set, but still relies on video concepts to effectively use.

2. Adobe After Effects

a. The After Effects suite offered powerful new ways to enhance video and motion graphics.\

b. This tool can be utilized in both the academic and occupational environments.

c. This tool I would describe as a new technical skill set.

3. Editing

a. This month we learned many different techniques that editors use to enhance their motion design

b. I would consider this both a conceptual and technical skill set.

c. This could be used in both the academic and professional setting.

4. Motion Design Insights

a. From the pitching process to final product, we've learned many techniques to find inspiration in motion design and avoid overload.

b. I would consider this a conceptual skill

c. I feel that this falls in the occupational and academic setting.

5. How the brain visualizes

a. This month we learned how our brain interprets motion and how motion designers can take advantage of how our brain works for maximum effect within design.

b. I feel that this an academic topic that is carried over to the occupational side.

c. I also feel that this is mostly conceptual from the graphics designer perspective.

6. Human Centered Design

a. Human centered design focuses more on how the audience interacts with the design versus the physical aspects of the design itself.

b. This can be both academic and occupational as we need to learn this skill set to enhance how we employ it in the occupational setting.

c. This would fall under the conceptual area versus technical.

7. Unintended Consequences

a. This month we also learned about un-intended consequences in graphic design which can have both positive and negative impacts on the viewer.

b. This again can be considered both academic and occupational as everyone needs to read into their design and request feedback to help avoid any un-intentional negative consequences. Now if the consequence has a positive unintended impact that is always good.

c. This is both conceptual but still utilizes technical skills such as feedback workshops to help identify.

8. Animated Logo

a. Animated logos add a way to spice up traditional logos and help achieve a positive customer impact.

b. The theory behind animated logos and their concepts is conceptual, however to create them in tools such as After Effects requires technical skills.

c. This skill would primarily be used in the occupational setting, but there's nothing that says it couldn't be used in an academic setting as well.

9. Motion Movie Posters

a. The motion movie poster is a way of taking a static graphical movie poster and adding motion elements to it to help capture the eye of your target audience.

b. I feel that this would most likely be used in the occupational setting as there is probably little need of this in the academic environment with the exception of teaching motion graphics.

c. This skills requires conceptual theories for the underlying goal of what you're doing, but emphasizes technical skill in practice.

all wounds being how it is (very involved with alternative timelines and pretty long for a fanfic), how do you keep track of it all? do you have some huge flowchart document/wall to keep the story straight or do you just let it consume your mind? how much do you adapt versus plan on chapter by chapter basis as you write?

Looking back at all of the fiction I’ve written so far in my life, All Wounds actually isn’t the most complicated – it’s the second most. The most complicated was probably the crossover shit I wrote in high school, which spanned multiple fanfics which all fed into a single mainline one, where I had to be keeping track of political motivations of different factions in a war and all of this ridiculous shit. It was fun to ponder those sorts of things with regard to whimsical worlds and cartoony characters, but at the end of the day, even my adolescent self was all about character development – building narratives to pinnacles where the protagonists would have to make a difficult decision, typically involving the theme of “letting go.”

I ended up abandoning that project in college because it just got too complicated (basically I wanted to do some crazy-ass Homestuck levels of nonsense but no way I could manage it in my spare time) and I had to focus on other aspects of my life. All Wounds is the first time I’ve really revisited a weird, complicated narrative with an emphasis on building up toward plot twists and shit. Chapter 16 marks the “big moment” of the story – ideally, when readers finish this chapter, everything that’s happened so far will make enough sense to suspend disbelief through to the end. But given how the baseline story itself doesn’t really add up well…there’s no way it can all make sense, and I can’t really make even all of my own weird ideas completely line up. I do want to try, though.

In the end, however, what I’m really after is explaining enough of things to get the audience to buy into the characters’ motivations, to make sense of why they’re acting the way they are, what their goals are, and how they’re working toward them. Getting too caught up in a complicated plot can leave the audience full of apathy and indifference.

All Wounds isn’t really about time travel -- at least, not at its center. It’s not trying to do anything specifically groundbreaking or amazing with its time travel shenanigans. There’s not going to be a clever trickety-trick that resolves the whole situation – in the end, there will be time travel mystical whatever afoot, but it’s ultimately going to be about Max and Chloe each needing to make a tricky choice about how they’re each going to move forward with their lives due to consequences of things they’ve already done, choices they’ve already made.

Chloe’s struggles are much more human and grounded in earthly things -- mainly the people around her and her own insecurities regarding her place with them.

But Max’s problems are internal, and her situation with her Other self isn’t going to be solved with magic -- not really. Supernatural nonsense might be what gets her in a position to make her big, endgame choice, but that choice is going to be...I dunno, human.

A year and half ago, I did build a “skeleton” doc trying to line up the main plot beats of the story…but I always found the actual chapters would derail from this, and in some places actively disregard it.

This is because my style of writing is more the “gardener” than the “architect,” though it is a hybrid of the two.

When I try to actively plan ahead in detail, it…never really goes too well.

I don’t keep track of things in writing after I’ve sorted out the basic stuff. I use a music playlist to maintain some sort of “chronology” to emotional beats and in some cases plot connections (ex. three specific songs in a certain order helps remind me of how a certain chapter is supposed to have three specific plot things happen back to back). I also have a “quotes” doc where I dump noteworthy quotes that relate to the plot or the concept/themes I want to explore, but they’re never in a specific order. So whenever I start a chapter, I pick two quotes – one for the start, one for the end – and I use those to help build a point-A-to-point-B baseline of the general idea of the chapter. But there’s never been any formal outline or chart or anything like that, and very often, the story will take a turn on its own.

I can’t claim to have my plots planned out entirely when I begin – but I do pretty much always have an ending in mind from the start. Some main plot concept that everything should ultimately be building toward. With All Wounds, that has always been Chloe needing to come to terms with the people around her, Max needing to come to terms with herself, and Chloe ultimately needing to let others help her help Max, the way Max has helped her in the past. (ie Max helped Chloe grow up when she was lost in her own issues, now it’s Chloe’s turn to help Max do the same) They both have some serious baggage, and even if some of it is caused by supernatural shit, and needs to be resolved by supernatural shit, not magical elements of being a human being are at the core of everything. And those core human elements need to be what fuels the cause/effect of any big choices.

I construct a story like a garden. I try to set up the layout, the fertilizer, and I get to work planting seeds as I start writing the story. Some of those seeds, I start off knowing exactly what they are and what they’ll grow into. But more often, they’re seeds I don’t really know the species of. But my gut tells me to plant them where it does. So I just take faith in my instinct that as long as I give these narrative seeds water and sunlight and all that, that they’ll organically grow into whatever they are, and I’ll recognize what that harvest will be eventually. Usually, this works well enough. It’s not always perfect, so sometimes I end up needing to do a bit of ret-conning.

The most important example of this is Other Max and how she’s impacting the plot. You’ll notice that at this point, the entire plot revolves around her, where before she was functioning as merely a voice in the back of Max’s mind – now she’s like her own fully fledged character, an alternate persona. When I first started All Wounds, Other Max was just going to remain a ‘voice,’ she was never originally intended to evolve in the way she has – but when I decided to pursue the “time skip” concept and flesh the story out more (way back at the start, AW was going to end basically where Chapter 7 currently does), I had to consider what I would want to do with my own time travel story. What kinds of ideas could I incorporate that I hadn’t seen in a time travel story before – or at least not in the same combination? What could I work with given the ideas the canon story presented us with? Over the past year, these have gradually grown from those early seeds, germinated, and with Chapter 16, will hopefully bloom.

If I’m lucky, it will look like I planned it all from the start, even though I certainly did not. But I think I planned enough of it, early enough ahead to flesh things out as I got there. You’ll notice I keep using the word “enough” with all of this. I don’t believe in perfection, at least not with long form storytelling. But I do believe that there’s always a certain threshold, a certain level of balance where if you can achieve that with your plot, it’s what will give way to that magical “willful suspension of disbelief,” which is critical for any story involving supernatural, magical, fantastical things.

If your audience gets too hung up on the technical details – “Aw, why didn’t they just do this? That would’ve made more sense” – then your story has failed to get them to suspend disbelief.

On the other hand, if you pull a Kojima or a Square-Enix and you fucking overload your story with too much context, you’ll have a lot of confused, frustrated people on your hands, drowned in so much information that what was supposed to feel like an exploration of the human condition has become goddamn homework just to keep up with, much less seamlessly lose yourself in those big moments, those big choices.

Yea, I’m looking at you, Kingdom Hearts. Metal Gear. Gah.(and despite how much I may be referencing it in All Wounds, Chrono Trigger/Cross suffer from this shit, too, when they try to do overarching plot stuff)

I know nothing I write will 100% satisfy everyone, but my intent is to build a conclusion that gradually shifts away from “plot” and more toward a climax where everyone knows what the stakes are, and we get to see how the characters all deal with that. Because it’s the choices that are important, not necessarily what the technical details are. And yet, if those technical details are too complicated or too underdeveloped, it will distract from and detract from those climactic choices.

And when your main plot devices all have to revolve around time travel and alternate realities?

It gets tricky.

All Wounds in particular has been weird for me to work on because of the time travel, alternate reality nonsense – it makes me feel obligated to leave more bread crumbs than usual. More “seeds.” Some of which I don’t end up using, and ultimately don’t serve much purpose, as their seeds never germinate properly. You might notice I specifically will call back certain lines of dialogue, certain specific moments – relive parts of the story from a different characters’ perspective, or in a different timeline. This is partly to give things a cohesion and help the reader connect through that familiarity, making it easier to put things together, I suppose, but it’s also because it’s content I can literally just look up in an earlier scene and use as a point of reference for myself, and build from.

Time travel stories have gradually become one of my favorite things to explore, and I think a big part of it is how my own life has a “butterfly effect” moment that can be traced back to one seemingly innocuous choice, and yet for a fact I know my whole life would be different had it not been for that choice. This, combined with my intent belief in environment affecting more of a person’s development than inherent traits – yet not affecting it entirely – leads me to be attracted to stories that explore this idea. Lastly, “humans are temporal beings” is such a fascinating topic to me, and so with AW I wanted to really build a plot around this concept – if you take a person and remove them from the standard boundaries of space-time, how does it change them? Are they still “them” anymore, really, at that point? What if it literally broke them as a human being – but since we’re talking time-space, it’s not like breaking a coffee mug, it’s more cosmic and abstract than that.

This was the core idea of the plot stuff from Chapter 8 onward. And it wasn’t there immediately, from the start. It wasn’t planned from the get-go. It just found itself here as I began the process of actually trying to write the characters and what struggles they might face in their situation.

With some rambling about plot-construction out of the way, here’s the other huge element of this for me: the characters.

I let them act out. I let them drive the direction of things. Once in a while, like with Other Max, they end up growing and evolving and doing things I never planned on, and I let that happen if it seems promising. Other times, like most scenes with Victoria, the characters will kind of devolve a bit and start bickering in ways that are unproductive – and I need to ‘rewind’ and get their attention back on track to what really matters, where the scene is really going.

In a way, this means a lot of what I write almost feels like directing actors in a performance – only the ‘actors’ aren’t physical, separate entities, but…parts of myself. I think this is ultimately what fascinates me so much about stories about what I refer to as “The Other Self.”

I tend to stray toward darker plotlines and concepts with this, (I’d name some of my favorite stories about it but that might ruin the surprise) but that’s because I’m weird and love exploring dark stories to help me appreciate the light.And maybe this is related to my gender transition, too, but the idea of how a person isn’t necessarily just…a static, singular thing, but can function in pieces, parts, it intrigues me about the human condition. And to me, that’s what fictional characters are when you write them with your heart in things – they carry a piece of you with them, and that’s where their life comes from.

Thing of it is, life is like fire – it can burn and grow and get out of control if you’re not careful. But sometimes the way those flames change can be good – burning away the old, or being fueled by it, etc.

So, to more directly answer your question:

No, there isn��t really a document, a chart, a wall, a schematic. There’s a music playlist, and a collection of quotes. From the overall story structure, to the way a whole chapter is produced, to the way an individual scene plays out, I always go in with a plan of where it needs to end (or where I think it does), decide what the starting point is, and let the characters fill the rest in like actors interpreting a script. From there, if there’s problems, I “fix it in post.”

In the case of All Wounds, that’s even more the case, since there’s no-doubt some aspects I’ve overlooked, which I’ll need to “fix” later when adapting to a visual novel. In fact, I’ve already made a lot of drastic changes to the “prologue/tutorial” to reflect the evolution of the part of the plot which is connected to it.

People will give you shit if you don’t plan things ahead. And they should. But never expect yourself to have all of answers right away. You don’t know for sure, with certainty, what these characters really need, who they really are, what is really driving them and what they’re willing to do for it – you never really know any of this entirely – until, like a real person, you spend time getting to know them by writing them, working with them.

If you do your job right, the audience will feel like you had everything planned out when really you were just good at adapting and letting things grow organically, and being able to connect things together well enough. Being able to give the audience enough context, construct a plot that makes enough sense, have characters make choices that are plausible enough.

Stories, especially longer ones, can never be perfect, but if a storyteller finds their own unique, individual balance between planning/constructing and growing/evolving, they can create something that will really stick with an audience.

Ok but can we talk about how the Paladin’s bayards don’t just suit them, but actually ARE them? THE BAYARD PICKS THE PALADIN, MR. POTTER.

The bayards are frankly the coolest metaphorical device happening in this show and I haven’t seen anyone talk about it yet (I’m sure someone has, but I feel like it’s not really... a thing??), and if my major has taught me any(useless)thing it’s to get stuck on functional motifs in storytelling so

Keith

I mean this is just fun. You’re probably not surprised that he gets the big blade because he’s main-character-red and the emo/possibly-Asian-one, but let’s consider a few things:

The fact that it’s sharp on both sides acts as a physical reminder of the duality happening within his character (he cuts others down, but internally he’s cutting himself down just as much: a double-edged sword).

Furthermore, that double edge reminds us that it’s a loner’s weapon: he needs to be able to attack with each swing, in any direction, because no one’s coming to back him up. It may be space, but dude is clearly rockin’ the lone wolf/samurai vibe. The length backs that up a bit as well--it keeps everyone he sees as an ‘enemy’ or a ‘rival’ at a distance (//side-eye @ lance).

What’s even more interesting is that if you look at Keith’s relationship with his bayard compared to his Marmora blade, they represent his hidden and public selves: who people see him as/expect him to be vs. who he truly is and wants to be (is afraid to be) himself.

Most people only see his bayard, a classic warrior/knight weapon that represents strength and grace and leadership. Keith brings this out in battle, in front of his friends, before enemies, etc. But when he’s alone at night or when he’s holed up in the desert, the blade on his mind and in his hand is his Marmora dagger. Despite being a secret for so long, it is actually this blade (and not the bayard he got from Voltron) which Keith always keeps close to him (and which he keeps strictly concealed).

He covers up the mark on the hilt as if to cover his own hidden thoughts and feelings (and maybe even dubious past). In public, he feels he can proudly show his bayard but doesn’t want anyone to know he has the dagger, even before he himself knows what it might mean.

Even more interestingly, this blade also represents close combat--letting people get close to you--and the desire to protect others, showing that these are things Keith thinks about, feels, and even wants, but is afraid to show to those around him. What’s more, while the obvious skills and general cool-dude-ness associated with the bayard are something Keith has earned/achieved by his own merit, the Marmora dagger (and all the things it represents) were something he was born with; something inherently part of him. Ironically, once Keith learns more about his dagger and what it represents, it becomes longer--it adds distance, just as the truth about his past puts distance between him and the other paladins.

Like, I could literally (gladly) write an entire essay just on the symbolism of how Keith treats these blades, but you get the idea.

I was gonna do Shiro next but his is even sadder than Keith’s so let’s do

Pidge

So some things about this are obvious: it bears a (kind of adorable similarity) in shape to her head. It’s small, she’s small, but if you underestimate either of them you will be sorry. It’s an incredibly quick/nimble weapon (a great parallel for her stinging wit). Her bayard is designed for quick, surgically precise movements, which is exactly how Pidge works (both mentally and metaphorically).

However, while it has great attack capabilities, that’s clearly not the bayard’s (or Pidge’s) main purpose; it’s a necessary consequence in the pursuit of other goals. Rather, the transformative and flexible uses of Pidge’s bayard emphasize the desire to be useful and to solve problems over attacking. This is belied by the fact that Pidge forms Voltron’s shield. Pidge would much rather think her way out of/around a problem than charge in head-first.

Her bayard is a reflection of that. Pidge’s bayard is also the most technically complicated, which is another great parallel for her mind. Furthermore, the grappling hook function of her bayard echoes her desire to find things out of reach, and cast out into space and bring those things close to her, or herself to them (*cough*MATT*cough*).

TL;DR: it’s an all-purpose, unassuming weapon meant to perform multiple tasks in an efficient, creative way, and it focuses on problem solving/extraction more than brute attack (though it packs plenty of punch when cornered). And, of course, though she be but little, she is fierce.

Lance

As his swagger (and even his name, like talk about being on the nose) suggests, Lance is totally in-your-face, up-in-your-business blabbermouth who seems pretty simple to understand. So why does he have the weapon that arguably requires the most finesse, patience, and also has a long range? Because that’s what Lance is really like under all that talk. It may seem like Lance lives with the words “are we there yet” on his tongue, but consider this: Lance wanted to be a pilot, but was originally relegated to commercial-class ranks. Did that stop him? Nope. He kept at it until he made it to the top of those ranks (it’s safe to assume that if they only promoted one pilot to fighter-class after Keith’s expulsion, it would be the top of the commercial-class students). That’s more patience than any of the other paladins have shown.

As a gun in a team that has close-combat weapons, Lance’s bayard automatically assumes a supportive role (despite all his talk about beating Keith and being the best), and we see this multiple times throughout the show. His first day as a fighter-class pilot, what does Lance do? Talks to his team and says they should stick together. How does he find out about Shiro? He’s following Pidge and asking about what she’s up to--crazy theories that others wouldn’t care to hear out. There are a lot of other examples of this (notably, when he throws himself in front of Coran), but from the get-go we’re slyly shown that Lance actually cares about and pays attention to those around him (even though he keeps talking about kicking their butts and being #1). It makes sense, then, that his weapon would be one designed to support and provide cover for others. In fact, we see Lance doing exactly this in the first episode when Pidge mouths off and he rushes in to cover for her.

Sadly, as one of the longer-range weapons, Lance’s bayard is also one of the loneliest metaphors in the group, and we see the reason for this just as much in VLD: Lance doesn’t feel appreciated (or sometimes even accepted) by the people around him. He often feels distant, though not by choice. He may shoot (ha) his mouth off a lot, but at the end of the day it’s pretty apparent that this boy craves love and attention, almost as much as he wants to be perceived as a ‘top gun’ (double ha) within the group.

A gun--especially the rapid-fire type that Lance has--further mirrors his tendency to be impulsive (and even impetuous) rather than controlled and thoughtful. On the bright side, though, it is exactly that willingness to pull the trigger that has catapulted the gang forward on a number of occasions.

Shiro

Between Shiro’s arm and his bayard there are so many different things going on here I don’t even know how I can touch on all of them. If I could write an essay on Keith’s weapons, I could write a BOOK on Shiro’s.

First, let’s talk about Shiro’s actual bayard. In Zarkon’s hands, you can read this as a physical extension of Shiro’s freedom, or even as Shiro himself: Zarkon took the bayard--something meant to be used for good--from another world, and then warped it in the hopes of using it to cause destruction.

The good news is that both Shiro and the bayard escape Zarkon’s clutches because of Voltron, and though Zarkon intended to use them, they instead become the strongest weapons to fight against him. They will always feel the effects of Zarkon’s influence and ownership--the bayard because of Zarkon’s former paladin connections, and Shiro because of his arm and PTSD--but they still fight. In the end, it is Zarkon’s obsession with them as his former ‘possessions’ that becomes his downfall. So deep is his trauma that Shiro actually waits until it looks like they’re about to die (when Voltron is in an electric headlock) to activate his bayard. Why? Because he doesn’t trust his arm, he doesn’t trust his hold on the bayard or the lion (don’t even get me STARTED on how the lion--down it’s right-hand weapon and still somewhat under Zarkon’s control--represents Shiro himself), and as a result he doesn’t trust himself to be stronger than Zarkon.

Even when Shiro finally gets the bayard back, he doesn’t call it his bayard, or the black bayard; he calls it Zarkon’s bayard (and it looks the part). This can be seen as a mirror for how Shiro sees himself: even though it’s a bayard, Zarkon tainted it, and now it doesn’t belong to him even though it’s rightfully his and he has it in his hands (which, ironically, is still technically Zarkon’s hand... you get the picture).

However, as Keith corrects him (”you’ve got your bayard”), the bayard rejects the changes Zarkon forced upon it, and reverts to a form that matches Shiro and the other paladins (likely how it looked before Zarkon started using it for evil). Just as the paladins healed Shiro by rescuing him and making him part of Voltron, Shiro does the same for the black bayard. Indeed, he only pulls out the power necessary to retrieve the black bayard once he wakes up to find the team fighting to protect him. It might be telling symbolically that Shiro leaves his bayard behind when he goes missing at the end of the season--perhaps he’s won his freedom only to have it taken once again.

Which leads me to...

The black bayard could also represent Shiro’s memories: both are known to exist, and we get hints/flashes/teases throughout the show, but both are initially “lost”. Slowly, it is revealed just how both Shiro’s bayard and his memories have been taken/corrupted by Zarkon. We see this in the way Shiro’s memories haunt him, only to frustratingly elude him when he needs them. When Shiro finally tries to find out more about why Zarkon has the bayard, he’s also facing his own mind--his memories, his insecurities, and his apprehension at what fate awaits him--as well. In this sense, when Shiro reclaims the black bayard, he is also reclaiming so much more: the hold/fear Zarkon held over him, the insufficiency and anxiety he felt because of it, etc.

You can also read the bayard as a mirror for Shiro’s arm: Zarkon took Shiro’s arm and replaced it with something Galran. Shiro joins Voltron only to find that Zarkon also has his metaphorical right hand--his weapon. Shiro can’t use the weapon he should be holding (in a hand he doesn’t have because of Zarkon) because Zarkon took it. Talk about a vicious cycle. This symbolism is supported all through season 1 and parts of season 2 where we see Shiro simultaneously struggle with controlling Zarkon’s lasting effects on Voltron and coming to grips (ha) with controlling his arm. It’s hinted--both during battle and through PTSD--that if Shiro doesn’t control his arm, it will control him, just as Zarkon demonstrates that if Shiro can’t reclaim the bayard, Zarkon will use it to kill him (we see a similar parallel with his memories).

I’m just going to stop here because the black bayard and Shiro’s arm can represent so many different things that it totally distracts me and I can only really do it justice by literally sitting down and writing out a full on dissertation on it.

But TL;DR: Shiro’s arm and his bayard are in a crazy, soap-opera drama with Zarkon on so many different levels and it is symbolistically incredible.

Hunk

Hunk’s bayard, much like Hunk, is pretty straight-forward and simple. Physically, it’s a big weapon. A big, hulking (Hunking????) weapon. It looks incredibly imposing, but its chief function isn’t destruction, but preventing destruction. Just as Hunk likes to avoid violence, his canon is mostly used to disable enemy weapons as part of Voltron, and individually Hunk uses it to provide long-range cover fire for his team (when he tries to use it in a more actively combative role, he just ends up almost shooting Pidge... gg, Hunk).

Unlike Lance’s more nimble and quick-fire weapon, Hunk’s takes a lot of strength to move around and a long time to power up--this mirrors Hunk’s own well-rooted stance (he’s not easily swayed), and his cautious nature. He doesn’t do things off-the-cuff or on a whim; he thinks them through first. Indeed, it’s almost always Hunk warning the others of the possible outcomes of their proposed escapades.

He’s also slow to anger, just as his weapon is slow to fire. However, once he has decided to take a shot, his firepower is incredible, just as when he does decide to take action (like with the Balmerans), his will is unstoppable.

I could go on for days, guys. I have so much stuff I had to cut out because even the hardcorest Voltron fans don’t care about underlying motifs this much, I know, but AGH. GUYS. GUYS. THE BEAUTY??? OF THIS WRITING??? IN A KIDS’ SHOW?????

Misfire: Arrow 5x13 Review (Spectre of the Gun)

This isn't going to be a typical review because, honestly, I don't even know what to do with this episode. (Thanks for the gif suggestion @lipstickandwifi)

Let's dig in...

Everyone except Thea Queen

Back in the day, when television shows had "very special episodes" it served as a time out. The show would depart from their usual format and address a serious issue in present day society. For example, a "friend" would offer Punky Brewster drugs, forcing her to stop joking around and face a crisis. She would wonder what to do until Mrs. Reagan showed up at her front door to tell her, "Just say no." Mrs. Reagan would provide a concrete avenue to address Punky's problem and a solution to them as well. All's well that ends well. We could go back to our regularly scheduled slapstick comedy routine next week.

"Spectre of the Gun" isn't that. Television has evolved past the kind of “very special episodes” I described above, but that doesn’t mean the endeavor is always successful. While I admire Arrow for attempting to address a relevant social issue, the episode fails on multiple levels for me for multiple reasons. It is uneven, contradictory, and characters acted out of character to become mouthpieces for political ideologies. I don't feel Arrow adds anything new to the discussion and, even worse, I don't think they offer any solutions as we move forward.

Is Arrow the right show to address gun violence? Well... yes and no. Certainly yes because gun violence is so prolific on the show, but also no for the exact same reason. As James Edlund begins shooting up the mayoral office, and the camera closes in dramatically on the carnage he leaves in his wake, I found myself asking, "How is this violence any different than the violence we've seen in the other 112 episodes?"

The answer is simple. There isn't any difference, but this is a "very special episode" of Arrow, so now they are going to address it as an issue. But next week we'll go right back to dropping bodies with guns.

So, I do take issue with Oliver Queen hopping up on his moral high horse about gun control. I don't think he is the right character to voice that side of the debate. In anything it should be Oliver who is the silent character, while perhaps other characters like Felicity (a victim of gun violence), could argue for the gun control.

Why do I say this? Because I watched Oliver drop 12 men, without a second thought, with a gun last week during a flashback. He broke someone's neck in the premiere.

Oliver is a killer and he's embraced that side of himself again. He's going to kill when necessary and he will determine the terms of that necessity. Not the law. I've had a beef with this for awhile, so anyone who reads my reviews on the regular won't be shocked by this attitude. I find this whole "gray zone" particularly frustrating because Arrow willfully ignores an easily achievable middle ground: Lian Yu and the ARGUS prison that holds Slade.

Why can't we use that again? Oh that's right. Because we're not at the end of the fifth season. Sigh.

"That's not your call to make."

Oliver argues with Edlund that despite his anger and pain he does not have the right to decide who lives or dies. The Green Arrow finds himself in a similar moral debate with The Vigilante after he guns down a criminal Oliver tied up and interrogated.

"I'm you. The only difference between us is I use a more efficient weapon."

Here's the problem. Oliver is making life and death decisions on a nightly basis. He has elected himself judge, jury and executioner.

Is killing only okay when Oliver does it? Is he the only one who has the corner on life and death decisions? Isn't Prometheus’ entire beef with Oliver that he cannot see his own hypocrisy? Yes, of course, and that is the problem in "Spectre of the Gun." While Oliver is willing to address gun violence, he isn’t willing to address his own history of violence. When the hero makes you think the Big Bad has a point, you've got yourself a narrative issue.

Perhaps this is intended to push Oliver towards an enlightened moral code that he embraces at the end of the season once he becomes the Green Arrow. That's all well and good, and wholly welcomed by yours truly, but it doesn't make Oliver's perspective in "Spectre of the Gun" any easier to swallow.

My second issue is the contradictions. Edlund's family is killed during a mass shooting. He believes if Star City had pushed through the gun registry it would have protected his family. So... he shoots up city hall and the hospital to make it happen. WHAT???

Then, in his face to face with Oliver, it's revealed the shooter bought his gun legally, so there was nothing the city could have done to protect Edlund's family. His response is, "I know." Again, I say...

Then why is he going around shooting everyone? It makes absolutely no sense. If Edlund is mentally disturbed, then no gun registry or gun control law is going to stop him either. His motives are illogical and contradictory thus rendering them, from a narrative perspective, pointless.

My third issue is with balance. Marc Guggenheim promised a fair and balanced debate. We listen to Curtis lecture Felicity about the wonders of fair and balanced debate. Arrow committed itself to presenting both sides of the issues.

I don't love guns. I wouldn't have a problem if every handgun, semi automatic, automatic, etc. was confiscated. However, I am also an "originalist" (the constitution should be interpreted as closely as possible to the way America’s founders conceived it. ) Even though the 2nd Amendment isn't my favorite amendment, I recognize the right to bear arms. We don't get to pick and choose which amendments we follow. I've grown up around responsible gun owners, friends and family alike, who use guns for hunting and sport. These people are also ardent 2nd Amendment advocates and they have legitimate points of concern, as do people who are proponents of more gun control.

However, Arrow did not present the "pro gun" argument tonight. Marc Guggenheim is an admitted unapologetic progressive, which is absolutely his right, but what is presented is the unapologetic progressive's version of the "pro gun" argument. This is an entirely different thing.

Essentially, “pro gun control” Oliver goes head to head with a city councilwoman who is for 2nd Amendment protection. Oliver is concerned with doing the right thing, while the councilwoman is more concerned with the political fallout (a not so subtle dig at the NRA and anyone who argues 2nd Amendment rights). While she argues 2nd Amendment protection, she never quite articulates those concerns in a concrete way. I believe Marc gave it his level best, but this falls short of the balanced realm.

"Spectre of the Gun" is essentially a PSA for gun control. However, I don't think Arrow added anything new to the argument, which is a massive missed opportunity in my mind. Rehashing points made in other forums isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I was hoping there’d be a little more new blood injected into the discussion.

My fourth issue is with solutions. Arrow spent a great deal of time talking around the concept of a gun registry, but they don't really delve into any details on how this limits gun violence.

The entire point of Arrow, the entire reason Oliver is the Green Arrow, is because he believes the system doesn't work. That's why a vigilante is required.

“It does need to stop, and if it's not gonna be the courts and it's not gonna be the cops... Then it's gonna be me.” - Oliver Queen, “An Innocent Man” 1x04

Now that Oliver is mayor he is the system. So, I was rather interested in seeing what solutions he was able to come up with.

Keep in mind this isn't "Earshot" on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Buffy isn't talking Jonathan down while he holds a high powered rifle in the school clock tower.

This isn't One Tree Hill when a student opens fire on the school.

The entire episode takes place within the political construct of the mayoral office. The whole point is to see Oliver solve a problem as mayor. Marc and Wendy repeatedly said in promotion the concept is for Oliver to go an episode without wearing the Green Arrow suit. Although, he wore the suit, so color me mystified.

And then, we arrive at the climax, and what the episode has been building towards. Pro Gun Control Oliver and 2nd Amendment Defender Rene, come up with a gun control policy that protects people against gun violence, but doesn't limit the freedom of gun owners. Arrow beats its might chest because they manage to find a solution that serves both sides. Everybody leaves happy.

And the new gun control policies are...? And they achieve both by doing what...?

No details are given.

I read all the interviews before I watched the episode. I know Marc and Wendy were going for a nondescript, even debate, without providing any solutions. "Spectre of the Gun" is our Rorschach test.

Umm... or it was a freaking cop out.

When the entire episode is built towards finding a political solution and then you fail to offer that political solution, that is an EPIC fail.

This is a fantasy world. Make it up! If there is an easy way to achieve BOTH (gun control that protects 2nd Amendment rights) then PRESENT IT. Let some good come out of this. Throw it in the debate mix. Let's get it in front of Congress. Let's use this vehicle we call television to actually DO SOMETHING.

Here's why Arrow didn't present their mystical "everybody gets want they want" solution. It's not easy to achieve both. That's why this issue is so controversial. That's why this war rages on and on and on. At least when Punky Brewster said no to drugs, you understood how she was going to do it. Mrs. Reagan gave her the road map. Sometimes she even brought visual aids. Arrow wants the neat bow, and feel good wrap up, Mrs. Reagan provided without actually showing the visual aids. Nope.

If the audience isn’t meant to receive any easy answers, then neither should the characters. Instead, Oliver & company find the answer, but we don’t get to know what it is.

Perhaps, Arrow's intent is to simply spark the debate. This ties in closely with Curtis' lecture to Felicity about the necessity of healthy debate. I agree with Curtis. Healthy debate is a necessity and is the life blood of a democratic society. However, I don't agree that we've stopped talking to one another. I don't think Arrow needed to jump start this debate again. This debate has been waging for decades now. Talking isn't the problem. The problem is... we've stopped LISTENING to one another.

I didn't see a lot of listening on Curtis' part in that "debate" with Felicity. Rather, it is Felicity being lectured to. I don't necessarily think Felicity is the right character to represent the "talking about politics is impolite" group. A strong stance about gun control would have made a little more sense to me coming from Felicity, the person who uses weapons the least on Arrow, rather than Oliver.

However, Felicity can, on occasion, shut down and retreat. So, I didn't find it wildly out of character, but it is frustrating. Instead of being talked to, it feels like she was being talked at. Once again, it feels like Felicity is being silenced to prop other characters. The reason why many get particularly upset about Felicity is because she is the female lead of Arrow. We heard from Dinah, who has all of two episodes under her belt. We heard from random councilwoman. Yet, we didn't get a clear view on Felicity's perspective. She is the front and center female character on Arrow. Her silence feels a little illogical. In an episode that's all about characters' viewpoints, we'd like to hear from the primary leads.

That's not to say Felicity didn't have some legit points. She did. Healthy debate is all well and good, but it also has an appropriate time and place. That's not always the workplace for some people, or other environments in which they don't feel comfortable discussing something as personal as political views. This doesn't suddenly make them a problem. It doesn't suddenly make them less American either, which I felt Arrow implies by Curtis' lecture.

This debate is also prohibiting actual work from getting done. The work is more important than Curtis and Rene's differing views on guns and Felicity calling attention to this fact doesn't make her any less engaged or concerned about the issue.

Diggle is also conspicuously silent too. He is too busy finding Dinah an apartment with a garden. Well, that is a crisis. Best get on that.

I found this shocking as well. Most military people I know have strong opinions about guns. Does leaving two of three members of Original Team Arrow out of the discussion feel odd to anyone else? It felt odd to me. Perhaps this is a protective technique? They don't want to embroil some of their fan favorite characters in such a sensitive issue and risk alienating audience members? So they offer secondary characters like Curtis and Rene as sacrificial lambs? Perhaps. No real way of knowing.

I did enjoy Wild Dog. While some characters felt like they were taking a leave of absence from their bodies to become political mouthpieces, Wild Dog did not. His attitude and perspective made a lot of sense, especially when we see his flashback. Rene going for his gun in the safe is an argument I've had with many friends and family who keep guns in the home. I've always questioned the logistical ability to get to the gun and load it, when an intruder is in the home. Arrow did a good job of showing that.

That said, they lost me at the random bullet killing his wife. The argument presented is the bullet wouldn't have fired if Rene didn't fire his gun.
