addison montgomery fanfiction recs by pairing
(although i am *relatively* new to the greys fandom, once i finished season three i immediately obsessively scoured the internet for any addison montgomery centric fanfiction i could get my hands on. here are just a few of my favorite ones for each of my addison ships (of which there are many). this is by no means an exhaustive list. my qualifications for this are that i’m cool and have good taste and spend way too much time thinking about fictional people)
ADDEK:
-“The Climbing Way” by winter machine (this is actually probably one of my favorite fanfictions of all time, period. this author is just absolutely brilliant at capturing their dynamic and all of its complexities. the entire thing is actually from derek’s POV which i was surprised how much i enjoyed considering i can sometimes be a derek hater lol but it provides some really good insight into his character without being as forgiving as canon or as bash-y as some fics (if that makes any sort of sense?). it also combines two of my favorite addek tropes: “sad baby backstory” and “traumatic event forces them to actually confront their issues”. it is also a very captivating portrait of derek and mark’s realtionship and has lots and lots of flashbacks. big angst warning especially for the early chapters.)
-“Some Bright Morning” by winter machine (i just can’t get enough of this author. i love any addek fic that heavily features savvy and weiss bc i think they should have made more appearances in canon. or savvy should’ve at least lmao. weiss was kind of a dick. but i like him in this fic! this is a very very interesting AU because it takes place largely outiside of canon settings and features a lot of OCs. it also takes place around early season one so the mark wound is still very fresh. its set entirely on a small island in georgia during savvy’s mother’s funeral so there’s plenty of forced proximity and bed sharing. the original setting and cast of characters are really fleshed out and completely captivating. like, i would read a whole separate story just about this island and its inhabitants. also features lots of background on savvy and addison’s friendship. and plenty of angst of course. you may be sending a pattern with these recommendations)
-“do you think i have forgotten (about you)” by crime_wives (this one legitimately made me sob. like, my body produced actual tears. angsty one shot. not happy-addek. a perfect snapshot of their tragic ending)
- “Unhinged (AddisonandDerekandMark)” by RulerOfAllThatIsEvilChiFlowers (very dark. very twisty. somewhat non linear.)
- “This Hurt Can Teach Us Both” by darlingwrecks (oh my lord this one is so so addek- bittersweet, sexy, nostalgic, painful and delightful all at once. my favorite thing about this writer is the way they write backstory, especially for the Med School Trio. this is also kind of fun because we never got to see how these two dealt with their post divorce logistics. derek was just kind of like “take all the property and fuck off” which is not at all how these things work lol)
MEDDISON:
- “lately she’s undressing for revenge” by emilyprentits (only read this if you want to be driven to tear your own hair out by the emotions this will make you feel. this is one of the fics that fully convinced me to ship meddison. so so so good and it’s like it was written from inside of meredith’s actual brain)
-“i’ll show you every version of yourself tonight” by withpeopleinperson (two words: stripper addison. read it. be forewarned it’s only one chapter and has not been updated in a few years but it’s a GREAT chapter regardless)
-“the seven stages of intoxication” by theprincessdiarist (meredith grey doling out meredith grey levels of emotional dysfunction. featuring loads and loads of delightfully frustrating mutual pining)
-“Sex and Caring in Seattle” by Bluefall (meredith once again having totally normal and regular feeling about her ex boyfriend’s wife. i love this one because they are both just kind of bisexual disasters and derek is just Also There. i love the way this author perfectly captures meredith’s perpetual inability to navigate her own emotions)
*EDIT: i also realized i forgot to add that these last two were recommended to me by @crime-wives !!!
-“open the floodgates up” by SugarsweetRomantic (this has EVERYTHING you could want in a meddison fic: mutual hurt/comfort, bed sharing, friends to lovers, these two being absolute dumbasses about each other. had me crying and also kicking my feet. genuinely)
MADDISON:
-“Make This Go On Forever” by darlingwrecks (i am so in love with this universe. i usually don’t gravitate toward kid/family centric fics but this one is so so much more than that. it’s maddison, if those two had made a real go of things, stayed in new york, and kept the pregnancy. there’s even some background merder eventually (which is not usually my jam but i like in this context). very very fluffy at times, a bit angsty at others, super in character but iirc i think this was written pretty early on in the show so addison and mark’s backgrounds may be a smidge different than in canon. this is the link to the rewritten version (i think?) on ao3. the author had the original up on live journal back in the day and i could have SWORN i read a sequel that i found a link to in the depths of their LJ but i cannot find it anywhere rn)
-“When I Grow Up” by winter machine (another maddison-if-they’d-stayed-in-new-york-and-addison-kept-the-pregnancy, but with a twist that brings them to seattle to see derek, who they haven’t spoken to in seven years. a fantastic plot but also sort of just a brilliant exploration of how mark and addison would be as parents given their own childhoods and how they have pretty much been cut off from the one healthy(ish) family dynamic that either of them have experienced. there’s also background merder in this one and it actually kind of made me like merder which is a major feat)
-“Celery” by winter machine (a fun little one shot featuring Derek Being An Idiot, Drunk Addison, and Mark Crossing Boundaries. a little bit sad and a little bit funny. again, everything by this author is just great)
JADDISON:
- “A Certain Slant of Light” by darlingwrecks (this is for those of us that were weirded out by addison’s convo with amelia in season 18. a more fleshed out exploration of addison’s mental health during the pandemic. it’s a very raw and honest portrayal of depression and anxiety and how someone like addison would navigate it while being a doctor in a global pandemic and raising an 8 year old. it’s not nearly as bleak as it sounds though. lots of fluff, a little smut. also touches on how addison might’ve grieved mark and derek. and archer makes some appearances which i loved (i know he’s an asshole but i really like addison’s brother lol))
-“Diamonds in the Sky” by Ziaaaaa_sdc (there’s so few jaddison fics out there, probably because of how compressed their relationship timeline was as they tried to wrap up the show, but this writer has several and they’re all so good. there definitely aren’t enough fun AUs for them so i was really excited when i first found this. its Ballet School Jaddison and there’s actually only three chapters atm. no idea if it will be updated ever again but it’s still more than worth a read. a smidge angsty so far. also seems to be setting up a little enemies to lovers arc)
CADDISON:
-“Help Me (With The Butterflies)” by BlackRoseMatron (a very sweet one shot. this author is single-handedly keeping the caddison shippers fed and i love it. they also have some really great meddison stuff)

how did one way revenge at derek for not telling meredith about addison turn into three way revenge (meredith against derek for mistreatment of addison, derek against addison for sleeping with mark, addison against meredith for dating finn (minorly))

do you think i have forgotten (about you)
He’s trying too. Though, there’s pressure behind it, an obligation. He hums absently when she talks, clearly not registering a word. She’ll take anything she can get from him. He’s trying and she’s sorry and everything’s messy, messy, messy.
Addison Montgomery/Derek Shepherd. 2k. 1/1

I’ve been reading a LOT of Addek fanfiction and the topic of Derek’s death isn’t discussed enough
like that was her person for what 16 years and i know like really he and Meredith are like soulmates but Addison was married to him longer than Meredith even knew him
I think that the reaction of Derek’s death (especially since she already loss Mark) shoulda been something we saw in the show and it upsets me that it’s not explored enough

Derek was barely paying attention to the words coming out of his best friends mouth. He was vaguely aware of the fact that he was still talking but it was now becoming background noise. Mark was sitting next to him at a study table in the Columbia University library and despite the fact that Derek seemed to be ignoring him Mark had been incessantly rambling since they arrived. Derek on the other hand had his face buried in one of the many books that were littering the table. The original plan had been to study for the project they had been assigned in their Gross Anatomy class the previous day but Derek was the only one sticking to that plan. He tried to focus on the words in front of him rather than Mark's story of some random blonde he had met at the bar the other night. He zoned in on the diagram labelling the ideal positions for an appendectomy incision and scribbled his notes down on the open notebook next to him, hoping his friend would finally decide to join him in studying soon.
"Derek!" Derek couldn't ignore Mark this time as he felt the sharp pain of him burying his elbow in between his ribs.
"What?" He hissed, trying to keep his voice down so they wouldn't attract the attention of any other students. When he looked up at Mark he was grinning at him with that usual mischievous look in his eyes. Derek suppressed the urge to groan at the thought of what Mark had planned.
"Look over there, the third row of shelves," Mark said nodding his head in the direction of the rows of books. He was staring at something now, or more likely someone Derek thought. He expected to see some random girl that Mark would inevitably ask him if he should talk to before disappearing over to her without even waiting for an answer. Instead, his breath and any sarcastic response he had been ready to throw at him ended up caught in his throat. "It's that redhead from our Gross Anatomy class that you have a crush on."
"What are we twelve?" Derek scoffed with a roll of his eyes. "I don't have a crush on her."
Despite claiming that he did not have a crush on her he hadn't taken his eyes off of her. She was partially hidden by the shelves but that didn't stop Derek from staring. It was a late Saturday afternoon which meant that they had no classes for the day and she was dressed in something a little more formal than the usual comfortable clothes that she usually wore to classes. She tucked a strand of red hair that had fallen out of her loose bun back behind her ear. She reached for a book on the top shelf and easily pulled it down. She was tall, it was something that wasn't easy to miss about her - and it was something Derek had admired about her - but those heels that she was wearing put her at easily over six foot.
"I don't have a crush on her." Mark echoed in a mocking tone, clearly not believing him for one second. "Yeah okay, says the guy that hasn't taken his eyes off of her since he noticed her."
There was just something about her, something that made it so hard for him to look away even when he wanted to convince himself he wasn't ready for a relationship right now. If Derek was being honest he couldn't count the number of times he had lost track of time staring at her blue eyes from across the class and now the dark maroon lipstick she was wearing wasn't helping as it made her eyes seem impossibly brighter, bringing out the colour even more. She magnetic and Derek couldn't stop himself from being drawn in.
"Look, Mark, we're med school students unlike you I just don't have time for relationships. I need to focus on my work." Derek explained. Explained, lied, it was the same thing to him really. He had somehow convinced himself that if he told himself he wasn't interested enough that eventually, he'd believe it. So far, it hadn't been working.
"Right, so if you're totally uninterested you won't mind if I go over there right?" Mark was cocky, he always had been and he knew exactly how to push all of Derek's buttons and wind him up if he wanted to get him to do something. It was a quality that got them into trouble more times than he could count when they were kids and it hadn't gotten any better over the years.
"Mark." Derek's voice was dangerously low, his tone suddenly shifting to something more serious, almost threatening and he threw a piercing stare at him. Warning him not to push further. He felt a sudden jealously he hadn't known was there taking over, a protective feeling. She's not mine to protect. The thought crossed his mind and he tried to push it away along with the jealously. But I want her to be.
Mark ignored him and pushed his seat back, moving to stand up and walk towards her. He was barely on his feet when he was knocked off balance, stumbling back down into the chair at a sudden sharp tug from behind. He glared up at Derek who still had a firm grip on the collar of his leather jacket and a satisfied grin on his face.
"Rude." Mark sulked, pulling his collar back into place once Derek had released his grip on it.
"I'm not letting you go over there," Derek said firmly looking over to where she was still searching through the rows of books.
"What does it matter if you're not interested?" Mark knew better than that. He knew Derek was interested even if he didn't want to admit it. Hell anyone with a pair of eyes within a five-mile radius could tell he was interested. In fact Mark, Sam and Weiss had an ongoing bet on how long it would take for Derek to admit it. While he sometimes had a strange way of showing it he wanted his best friend to be happy and he knew that he'd have to provoke him into making a move on her because he would never do it on his own.
The conversation descended into the childish bickering they were prone to as Derek continued to deny his feelings and their attention was drawn away from the redhead. So much so that they missed the footsteps approaching their table, the dull sound of high heels hitting the carpeted floor. Mark's eyes were the first to snap up to the sudden noise of someone clearing their throat. She was standing directly in front of them now, an amused smile on her face. Her arms were crossed over her chest and her head tilted slightly to the side as she seemed to be studying them.
"Hi." Mark blurted losing his usual casual composure, still slightly in shock that she had actually wandered over to their table herself. They both stared up at her and she quirked an eyebrow at them. So much for either of them making a move.
"Hi." She laughed looking between the two of them. "Sorry, it seems like I'm interrupting something here but it looks like you have the last edition of the book we need for the Gross Anatomy project, do you think I could have it after you?"
Mark regained himself first and glanced back at Derek who was just staring blankly at her. He was always the silent type in these situations and while most times it paid off as while Mark did all the flirting Derek somehow came across as the "deep and mysterious" type that caught everyone's attention, Mark was not about to let him waste this opportunity. He kicked out the chair he had been resting his foot on and gestured towards it.
"Why don't you join us? We'll probably get this thing done a whole lot quicker with three right?" Mark offered as casually as he could, trying not to expose his role of wingman too quickly.
"Oh," She seemed unsure but when she glanced at Derek to make sure she wasn't intruding he nodded and offered her a warm smile. "Okay."
"I'm Sloan by the way, this is Shepherd," Mark said extending the book she had been looking for towards her as she sat down.
"Seriously?" Derek sighed shooting an exasperated towards his friend. "That's Mark, I'm Derek."
"Oh come on we're going to be surgeons, we've got to get used to introducing ourselves by our last names."
"Well, in that case, Montgomery. Addison." Addison smiled, happily accepting the book from Mark. She seemed unphased by Mark's playful humour and easily fell into conversation with them both.
Derek found the difference between Mark and Addison's stances while they sat amusing. Addison was sitting properly if still slightly nervously in her chair, her legs crossed high, wringing her hands together in her lap while Mark pointed something out to her in the book - of course, he was only now interested in studying when he could show off. Mark, on the other hand, had slid back down in his chair again, his foot propped up on a free chair as he casually flipped through the books. As long as Derek had known him Mark had refused to sit properly in a chair, finding some way to sit awkwardly and half the time Derek didn't know how it was comfortable.
As Addison explained where she was in the project to them Derek picked up his notebook and flipped it onto the page of notes for the part that she was still working on. He handed them over to her and explained how and where he had found the information, watching her as she looked closely at what he was explaining.
"It's not much, just some rough bullet points but hopefully it can help," Derek explained nervously placing the notebook down in front of Addison letting her take down the notes she needed.
"Thank you, Derek," Addison said sincerely looking up to meet his gaze.
As cliche as he was aware it sounded, he could have sworn his heart stopped for a minute when their eyes met. She was smiling at him and she had that bright gleam in her eyes that made his stomach flip. Damn it, no matter what he said to try and hide it he really was falling for her. There was just something in the kind look she gave him that made it so easy to picture his future with her, and he wanted it more than anything.

Break My Fall - 3, 9, 12.
Thank you for indulging me though. <3
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
One of these two, I think, if the question is favorite sentence. They're both from the same scene and I spent the whole (short) story trying to get into Mark's head, so I like the contrast.
"There's a fat globe of a wineglass on the hall table – with a coaster, obviously, but if she's carting the thing around like Amy used to with that grubby security blanket, that's probably not a great sign."
"Just his name, just once, before he crosses what's left of the space between them and throws everything to the wind for the first taste of her wine-stained mouth."
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
Not this one. The Rachael's-birthday-fics tend to be one shots written in a single day/night ... Break My Fall ended up being posted in parts, but the actual story is just one big document. Oh. So I guess that counts, maybe. And then the line that inspired it - Derek's in love with another woman, and the only flight I could get was into Newark - originally made me think I'd write a lighter hearted story and it ... didn't turn out that way.
12: What do you like least about this fic?
A hard question for someone this vain. I kid ... mostly. I'm usually hypercritical of my writing, but this piece is one that holds up really well for me. Maybe because writing it all at once means it's more consistent. In terms of what I like the least: there's a minor inconsistency that I noticed when I first completed it and I couldn't get around it without changing things I had gotten attached to, so I left it and hoped no one would notice. And I actually like this story a lot (somewhere Summer, may she rest in sarcasm, is laughing at me) but I think the first chapter is my least favorite. It felt necessary, but it may be one of those things that works better for me than for someone reading it.

Just from re-watching, so far, four seasons of private practice I have a list of 8 possible fan fictions, all of which are Addek; something I never really shipped but want to write because Addison deserved better, and I’m seriously tempted to write one, but have no idea if anyone would read them.
Of course anything I will write will heavily focus on Addie/Amelia sisterly relationship too
