beach, 4:03am

Usually, she sleeps like a baby at her dad’s house, but it’s four in the morning and June is wide awake. With a sigh, she gives up on falling back asleep, rolls out of bed, and throws on some sweats. She makes her way quietly through the house, collecting the essentials. She leaves a note for Oscar in case he wakes up before she’s back, and then June is out the door.

It's a quick two-street trip to the beach, and the sound of waves grows louder with every step she takes. Pre-sunrise, the world is still – too early for pets and all but the most dedicated athletes. June is almost never alone anymore, between her job and Nora and former-First-Daughter appearances, so taking this moment just for herself is unexpectedly nice, even if she’d rather be sleeping.

She rounds the last corner and the shore comes into view, eerie in the dim light of false dawn. With the first step onto the sand, June feels some lingering stress fall from her shoulders. Water, especially the ocean, has always relaxed her, always made her feel more connected and rooted to herself. 

She likes the lake house just fine, but she always misses waves when she’s there. It’s also become more Alex’s retreat than her own (despite it being their dad’s property), especially now that he and Henry are going to have one of their weddings there. California, and her dad’s house especially, feel more hers. Alex hasn’t ever lived here for longer than a few weeks at a time, needing to spend most of his time in Texas and then DC and New York for school. June loves Alex more than she’ll ever be able to properly put into words, but it's definitely a (slightly guilty) relief to be in a place that doesn’t feel like he’s a part of – a place where June can be the focus for once.

June picks her spot carefully and unfurls the old comforter on the ground, weighing the corners down with rocks. She settles into the center and pulls Oscar’s big camping thermos out of her bag. Big enough to fit an entire pot of coffee, its best feature is the outer lid that becomes a mug. June pours herself a cup and looks out at the waves, reveling in the mixed scents of salt air and coffee that she gets with each inhale.

A breeze lifts her hair off her neck, making her shiver, so she tugs her hood up. She brings her knees up and tucks them under her chin. Despite the early morning chill, June doesn’t want to be anywhere else. She lets the coffee keep her warm while she watches the sky slowly get lighter, watches the tide come in.

June lets the place wash over her: listens to the waves crash, watches the sun start to reflect off the surface, basks in the still peace of the morning. She’ll head back eventually, but for now, she’s more than content to be alone with herself.

Six Sentence Sunday

oooooh! i've never been tagged in one of these before, so thank you @hgejfmw-hgejhsf

and i have the perfect snippet too! (don't you love how life works sometimes? i found a paragraph exactly 6 sentences that gives a good feel to the plot of this fic!

about this fic, while we're at it... for anyone who remembers that angsty little Christmas fic i wrote in October (Three Days) that ended with the implications they would soon be parents... yeah well THIS fic is the sequel to that one (titled Three Nights, hah i know) and takes place again at christmas time -- and again will be posted not at christmas time -- and with that information... i think yall can figure out the gist from this snippet! enjoy :)

Henry paced, lap after lap, around the waiting room in his puffy Elf slippers, that matched his green and red Elf pajamas. He’d mumbled something about them looking ridiculous (being that Alex was just as festively dressed in a Santa pajama set) at least a dozen times; to each time Alex sighed and tried to remind him no one was even in the room with them, and if anyone came… they weren’t going to care what the two were wearing. “Well, I bloody care, Alex!” Henry ultimately snapped, flinching at himself as soon as he said it and coming to an abrupt halt to bury his face in his hands. Alex was out of his chair – butt numb from sitting in the same spot for what felt like an eternity – and crossing the room to pull his husband into his arms. “It– It wasn’t supposed to be like this…”

Currently reading- oodles of fanfic - just finished the last of the 3 books I had been reading and waiting to for my copy of Waiting for the Flood by Alexis Hall (that's if i don't just get the kindle version to start it) to start any others (but Timothy Janovsky's Never Been Kissed might be next as well)

Currently watching- catching up with the hubby on things we missed when had our Disney+ inactive so currently it's Echo (think we have just the last episode left cuz hubby needed a Hawkeye refresh first lol) - now that got my paramount+ back with showtime gonna be starting up Fellow Travelers as well - oh and recently started Schitt's Creek again from the beginning (i had watched a few eps back when it started and then got busy and it got pushed to the backburner and i never came back to it until now)

Currently obsessed with- RWRB is like the current frontrunner for my attention - but also have Loki (and probably marvel stuff in general) Good Omens - Stranger Things again - and Fellow Travelers (was so into it even without watching so it's about to get worse (or better lol)) taking up space rent free in my head - oh and so ready for Mary & George to start up

So, look... I don’t have 10 standalone fics yet, I’m sorry! I only have 6 individually posted works on ao3, and only two of those are one-shots. So instead I’m going to post a line from the midpoint of the two standalones, and then find a line from the midpoint of the middle-posted chapter (or closest to it that I can get) of any of the one-shot compilations or multi-chaptered fics, if that works?

Nobody’s here to tell me no, so I’m taking the silence as a yes. Shhh.

 Something Precious Saved (T)

Bea rings him up one dreary December morning to ask Alex if he’ll grab an old picture of her and Henry and Philip with their parents, one she swears is in a photo album Henry took with him when he moved, and email it to her - something she needs for a planned Christmas present for all of them - and as he gingerly cracks open the delicate album, a colorful stack of paper flutters to their study floor.

If he accidentally hangs up on Bea in his excitement, well… he’ll call her back later to apologize and explain.

Call It Hope (T)

“You… forgot,” Ellen repeats, slowly and monotonously, trying to make the word make sense. The glance between the two boys doesn’t pass unnoticed by her, and she looks between the two of them like she might miraculously pull some sort of answer or explanation out of the thin air. “After almost five years of being a public figure, you forgot? You couldn’t even tell your sister you were running off?”

Alex opens and closes his mouth in the start of an explanation multiple times, but nothing manages to come out.

A Love Letter to Love (T) [Chapter 10: Death By A Thousand Cuts]

Philip sighs and gestures weakly to the room. “Can I at least come in and sit down first?”

Henry falls silent, half expecting someone else to chime in with an opinion, but the other three are all quiet, seemingly leaving the decision up to him. The bitter part of him wants to slam the door in his brother’s face, tell him that any effort he thinks he’s going to make here is all too little too late, make some part of him hurt - even if just for a moment - the way Henry himself has for years now.

[From The Vault] (T) [Chapter 2: Thanksgiving, 2022]

“No shame in finding comfort in the company of your person,” Leo chimes in in agreement, giving Ellen’s hand a squeeze. He turns to give her a soft smile, something so intimate that for a moment, Henry feels entirely like he’s intruding. He averts his gaze, taking another bite of the cookie in his hand.

After a moment, when neither of them prompts him further and he’s finished an entire cookie through nervous nibbles, Henry quietly asks, “How did you know you were it for each other?”

I can’t match you for prose (T) [Chapter 11: Week Four: Redo]

Henry sets the pan atop the stove, where six thoroughly ruined cupcakes sit - caved in, unrisen, and nothing like the picture from the recipe he’d printed. He’s trying to understand where they went wrong (did they forget the baking powder in their rush? Or overmix them?) when he hears the tiny sniffle.

He spins around, crouching down to their daughter’s level before she can really start crying.

when I’m away from you (I miss your touch) (T) [Chapter 4: Headache]

He trips over his own feet twice on the way through to the en suite bathroom, as if his body knows that every step taken away from Alex is somehow wrong. Once he finally stumbles into the room, he locks the door behind himself before he can give in to the temptation to immediately turn around and head back to him.

It’s time, he realizes, to face the music.

Fic Rec Friday Fun

Yeah it's not anywhere near Friday, but my weekend was bonkers and this is the first time I'm sitting down in front of an actual computer since Friday morning. But I'm definitely still doing this! Thanks to @rmd-writes and @three-drink-amy for the tags!

So wanted to get some hiatus rec lists going and encourage some self promo in my friends so how about sharing your top fics no matter how big or small - give us the links to your wonderful words with the Most hits/Most kudos/Most comments/Most bookmarks /Most words/Least words

What's wild about my AO3 is that each of these is genuinely a different fic, which seems to make me kind of unusual! Everyone else I've seen with these has a decent amount of overlap on top stats.

Most Hits: Do You Promise Not to Tell? (The Mandalorian, CaraDin) Written after the first season, this is a kind of crazy canon-at-the-time continuation that took me deeper into Star Wars lore than I ever thought I'd go (and will ever go again lmao). Also fun fact I think this is the last long fic I didn't plan out, and I'm kind of amazed it's still reasonably coherent.

Most Kudos: What Makes A Good Man (Loki Series, Lokius) The little 5+1 Art thief/CIA Agent AU that launched a novel-length series. Amazing that I thought I'd get away with just this fic at the beginning.

Most Comment (Threads): A Good Man Is Hard To Find (Loki Series, Lokius) The aforementioned novel-length continuation of the art thief/CIA agent AU, where Loki is now working with CIA.

WIP WEDNESDAY

A thing is thinging. Literally have no idea what this might possibly be, but @kiwiana-writes has been doing all of these soulmate AU’s and I got a lil inkling because I always want more Ace Alex in my life. May I present to you “Ace of Spades” which will probably eventually make its way into my soulmates one shot series that I have been contemplating for a hot minute in the weird wobbly subconscious of my mind

The system isn’t built for people who realize things slowly, who move towards love and forever in a plodding meandering way like a nice walk down a fall path. The system isn’t built for people who aren’t willing to immediately seal their fate via the sweet fuck of life or whatever else you want to call the copulating of not so couples who start getting it on like rabbits hit with sex powder. The sweet fuck of life. And wasn’t that the drag. Alex just wasn’t ever going to get to have a soulmate because he didn’t want to shove his parts into another person, or even really ever do anything that had to do with the whole sex side of the soulmates stuff. Truly fuck the system and the normative horse the backwards cowboy position rode in on. Alex doesn’t need sex and apparently the universe decided for him that he doesn’t get a soulmate.

Before that, I googled "bad british guy from pirates of the carribean" because I forgot the character's name and ended up learning the actor is also Mr. Collins and the "gay that's trying to kill me" from White Lotus lol

Dream trip: Not specific to any particular country but seeing the northern lights is on my bucket list soooo iceland maybe?

If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A capybara chilling along a river in South America. They are just so adorable and are one of my favorite animals. Love how they just hang with all sorts of other creatures.
