Pre Canon Voltron headcannons Bc I Can. Part 1(?)
Keith has dyed his hair red before, (specifically before meeting Shiro and then once at the garrison to piss Iverson and Sanda off.)
Shiro knows how to give himself a (non sexual obvi) massage.
After finding out Keith’s holiday plans consisted of staying in his shared room at his foster parents, Matt and Shiro invited over for the Holt/ Shirogane-Whatever the fuck Adam’s last name is family dinner. And he hasn’t missed one sense, even when in the desert.
Keith taught Pidge how to pick a lock and how to defend herself, while Pidge taught Keith his way around a computer.
Keith knows first aid. (Bc his dad was a firefighter, he grew up in the desert, and bc he was always getting himself in trouble.)
Matt and Keith pranked Iverson and Sanda a lot (unbeknownst to everyone else because they would get in a whole lot of trouble obviously)
Matt and Keith were roommates.
On the anniversary of his dad’s death, you could find Keith under his bed frame or in some other odd place with music playing. Matt covers for him in class while Shiro and Adam ask for the day off and hang out with him, usually in silence.
Adam, Shiro, and Iverson were all in the same book club.
Adam and Shiro have the occasional double date with Sam and Colleen (it consists of Sam trying to get Shiro to call him something other than Science Officer Holt and Adam and Colleen swapping recipes)
That’s all for now

if keith recognizes shiro as his commanding officer, what happens when kuron comes into play? (and potentially doesn't realize hes a clone)
An excellent question!
By then, Keith would have become the red lion's paladin, as Allura would end up filling the role of black paladin after Shiro's disappearance. Keith is... far from recovered at this point, more a tiny flame than a raging inferno. But it's enough for the red lion to call out to and connect to him, with the hopes of stoking it's paladin's inner fire even more.
Then Kuron shows up.
Keith... kind of broke for awhile after Shiro disappeared. He didn't- and couldn't, really- realize just how important he was to him until he was no longer around. He just kind of stays there in the black lion's hangar for awhile, until someone finally gets him to leave. He just kind of goes through the motions after that, and if where he'd been showing even the slightest signs of personhood before, he just seems to completely shut down and revert back to his old ways in the absence of Shiro... until the red lion calls him.
So Keith understands when Shiro returns that he... cares about Shiro. He's important to him. And 'Shiro' is happy to see that Keith finally seems to be coming more into his own. There's a short period in which things are great, and then...
...then it happens. There's a disagreement. Without even thinking about it, Kuron uses one of the specific command orders Keith was trained to respond to- and Keith hasn't broken free of his programming anywhere near enough to refuse it.
And Kuron, to his credit, is horrified. He did not mean to say that. But it's also too late to take it back, and a rift is formed between them. Keith shuts down again, and starts to struggle with the red lion as a consequence. Eventually he's shut out completely, forcing Allura to take back over- and Kuron to become black paladin in her place.
But Keith still has more agency now than he did before, so he makes a choice to leave, and join the Blade of Marmora. He was always an extra piece on the Castle. He can do more here. He let himself forget it for a little while, but now he keenly remembers what he is- a weapon.
(Being a weapon hurts a lot less than being a person.)

There's something about Paru Itagaki's art and how she draws anthros I don't see elsewhere, they are very 'rough' in style and have very animalistic traits yet come across so human. I know not many like how she draws the bodies and hands super human like but I personally adore it for that and feel it kinda adds to the style. It's both exaggerated and expressive, but also real and grounded, I've not seen a lot of art like hers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I feel that style of expression and shape is even more obvious with her human characters and designs, despite their exaggerated features it adds to their variety, and their 'grit' makes me think of them as so human.

Invocation of the holy sun:
The Charmer-Charmee Addresser asks the sun to rise over her face, body, gait and talk; to give her part of its rays and to make her visible to all and admired by all. Examples:
Holy sun holy great lord! I’m not raising up the wind from the earth but I’m raising your circle onto my head your rays into my eyelashes. Holy sun holy great lord! You have forty-four little rays give me four of them and keep four two I’ll put on my eyebrows and two on my cheekbones. Sun, sun, dear brother rise not on mountains, on forests on painted courtyards on slopes with buildings rise over my figure and make my body beautiful.

Chapter 1: He’s Alive
Summary: A look at the VLD universe if Adam wasn't killed off in the canon show. Shiro and Adam still broke up before Kerberos, but how would the conversation go if Shiro came back home to him?
AO3!
Word Count: 460
Enjoy~
“What do you mean he’s alive?!” Adam pushed himself into the room. Trying to keep his emotions contained. His breaths came out in short bursts.
“Adam, take a deep breath. Sam can answer any questions you have,” Iverson placed his hand on his right shoulder. His grip tight. His tone stern and cold. Speaking to him like he was a cadet.
Adam shoved his hand off him, keeping his attention on Sam. “He’s alive?!” Sam gave a nod, his eyes filled with sorrow and regret? That couldn’t be right. His lungs suddenly struggled for air. His eyes burned with unfallen tears, a reaction he did his best to smother. “He’s dead.” He looked at the Admiral who was standing off to his right. “You told me he was dead!” He spat the words out like poison.
“Commander Wright. Steady yourself before we discuss this information.” She stared at him with cold eyes.
He moved toward her, fighting the urge to raise his fist at her. They never got along. “You knew!”
Her jaw tightened and her eyes flickered to Commander Holt. “We published the information we were aware of during that time. We clearly have a different understanding.”
He moved closer, their chest nearly touching. Their faces were only inches apart. “Pilot error.”
She remained unblinking, “that was what we believed, yes.”
“He landed on Earth a year ago! And nobody said anything! Nobody told me anything!” His voice echoed off the metal walls, but no one moved to silence him. Or no one knew what to say to him. He looked around the room. His body twisted. No one met his eyes.
“You two aren’t together anymore. The information wasn’t necessary,” Sanda said in her emotionless tone.
Adam snapped his head at her, fire in his eyes. “Don’t you dare use that as a reason against me. He-”
“You ended it. There is no more engagement. No more access to his files by association. No more Shiro and Adam…or do I need to remind you of that?” Her face morphed into a smudged look. Signaling the conversation was over.
He chewed on his inner cheek until blood covered his tongue. He scanned her face a couple of times before shoving his way out of the room. He stomped down the empty halls, only stopping when he made it to his office. Leaving against the door as soon as he closed it.
He slumped to the ground. The floor was cold on his knees. He looked toward his bookshelf, the only picture he still had of him and Shiro glared back at him. Shiro’s dog tag shinning from where it hung on the frame. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to ignore the tears that snuck by.
He was alive.
-----
I hoped you liked it, the next chapter will be longer don’t worry! This was just laying the foundation since we never saw his reaction to learning about Shiro being alive
Thank you for reading! <33333

The Castle of Lions
Tumblr media
---One Year Ago: six days after Kerberos mission---
"Miss Shirogane, please clam down. You are allotted time off to grieve the death of your brother, but other than that, I cannot help you in this regard." Admiral Sanda says, closing her journal.
"But you've only stated that the crew of the Kerberos mission made a mistake, costing them their lives. You haven't specified what mistake or how he died. I need to know what happened to my brother." Alex says, standing up, slamming her hands on the Admiral's desk. Admiral Sanda squints.
"That's confidential information, Miss Shirogane. Unless you want me to call security, I suggest you escort yourself back to your dorm room." Admiral Sanda says, pointing out the glass doors. Alex pushes aside the chair she was previously sitting in and walks towards the door.
"I will find out what happened to my brother with or without your help, Admiral. It's only a matter of time before the truth is revealed." Alex says as she exits the office.
"Bitch." Alex mutters to herself as she lowers her head, however, as soon as she turned the corner, she managed to bump into someone.
"Alex… What are you doing here? I thought you were given time off?" says Keith, rubbing his chest where the hard-headed girl ran into him.
"I should be asking you that, aren't you supposed to be in class?" Alex asks, rubbing her forehead. "I came to ask the Admiral about the Kerberos mission." Keith says sternly.
"Don't bother. She's not gonna tell us anything." Alex scoffs. "All she said was a mistake cost them their lives, the rest is "confidential"." Alex explains as her and Keith walk in the direction opposite of the Admiral's office.
"So what do we do now?" asks Keith. "You are going back to class, and I am going back to my dorm." says Alex nonchalantly. "I can come with you, you know. I can skip class just for today." Keith says, frowning. "No. You don't wanna get kicked out of the Garrison, do you?" Alex asks.
"Fine, I'll go back to class…" Keith says as he walks away. " Bye, Keith…" Alex mutters under her breath. "Time to pack…"
--- One Year Later: location of the Fraunhofer line---
"Okay, I admit it. This is fucking creepy." Lance says, staring at the mountain range. "I'm getting a reading." says Hunk, holding his Voltron Geiger counter. Electronic beeping could be heard from the machine as Hunk and the rest of the group ventured towards what they hoped to be Voltron. Eventually they find themselves going into a cave with ancient markings along the cave walls.
"What are these?" asks Shiro, examining the markings up close. "These are the lion carvings I was telling you about." replies Keith. "They're everywhere around here." Lance walks up to the wall and wipes away the dust off a lion marking. Suddenly all the markings turned blue, and the ground beneath them crumbles. Scrams are heard echoing throughout the cave, as the group falls down the newfound hole and into a pool of water.
"Woah." Lance says, as he turns to face the giant blue mechanical lion in front of him. It had a sort of blue force field around it. "Is this it? Is this the Voltron?" asks Pidge, gasping at the sheer size of the lion. "It must be…" says Shiro.
"This is what's been causing all of this crazy energy out here." Keith says as he starts to walk up to the lion. "Looks like there's a force field around it."
"Does anyone else get the feeling this thing is staring at them?" Lance says, moving side to side, watching the lion's eyes waver. "Mmm, no." Shiro says. "Yeah, the eyes are totally following me. " says Lance, rushing up ahead.
"I wonder how we get through this." Keith says, cautiously putting his hands up against the blue force field. "Maybe you just have to knock." Lance jokes, as he knocks on the force field twice. Suddenly, a flash of blue light emerges from the site where Lance had knocked on the protective barrier. The force field seemed to lower, as blue markings light up on the ground in a circle around the lion, along with markings on the wall surrounding it. These markings show five lions, coming together to form one giant robot named Voltron.
"Woah." says the group collectively. "Voltron is a robot. Voltron is a huge, huge, awesome robot!" exclaims Hunk, punching his fists in the air. "And this thing is only one part of it! I wonder where the rest of them are." Pidge frowns.
"This is what they're looking for." says Shiro with a concerned look on his face. "Incredible." says Keith. Unexpectedly, the lion then moves, lowering its head to the floor. Pidge and Hunk scream, cowering away as if it's going to eat them. The blue lion's mouth opens and a ramp retracts from it's jaw, urging the group to go inside the lion's head. Lance chuckles and runs towards the inside of the head, making sure to be the first one in.
"Huh." Lance sighs, getting to know the interior. There is a single chair in the middle of the head, with what appears to be controls around the chair. Lance sits down in the chair, however, as soon as he does, the chair scoots itself forward closer to the controls. "Ahh!" Lance yells as the chair moves.
"Oh shit! Very nice!" Lance says as the "eyes" of the lion open to where you can see the surrounding area of the cave. Lance starts playing with the controls. The lion stands up and roars, the rest of the group already inside.
"Okay, now let's try this." Lance says as he grabs two of the control handles and pushes it forward. The Lion starts moving fast, breaking through the walls of he cave and flying out over the desert landscape. Unsteadily, the lion does a backflip and falls to the floor, however it wasn't long before Lance starts playing with the controls again, making the lion move back and forth rapidly. "You are the-" Keith starts talking, grabbing ahold of the chair as so not to fall backwards. "WORST pilot- ever."
"What in the fucking hell is that?" Says Commander Iverson, standing next to a member of the Galaxy Garrison. They were spectating some sort of blue lion moving haphazardly throughout the desert. "It appears to be a flying blue lion, sir." the man standing next to the commander scratches his head.
After a few minutes, Lance seemed to get a hold of the lion's controls. "Isn't this thing awesome?" Lance exclaims with a huge grin on his face. "Make it stop, make it stop." Hunk says with tears in his eyes, trying to hold his stomach fluids in. "I'm not making it do anything, it's like it's on autopilot." Lance says, laughing.
Just then, the lion bursts towards the sky. "Where are you going?" Asks Keith, digging his nails into the chair as the lion darts into space. "I said it's on autopilot. I have no clue where it's going." says Lance. As they leave their home planet, a large alien ship approaches them.
"Holy shit, is that really an alien ship?" says Hunk as his mouth drops. "It's going towards earth, are we supposed to stop it?" asks Lance, ready to fight. "They found me." says Shiro with a glazed look on his face. Suddenly, the alien ship starts attacking, firing laser beams in the direction of the lion. Lance does everything in his power to avoid getting hit by the lasers.
"We've gotta get it out of here!" screams Pidge, holding onto the chair. "Hang on!" says Lance as he charges the lion towards the ship. "Alright! I think I know what to do." Lance says.
"Be careful, man. This isn't a simulator." Pidge says with a panicked look on her face. "Well that's good-" Lance laughs. "I always wreck the simulator." Lance shoots off a laser beam from the lion's mouth towards the ship. Explosions can be seen on the ship across where the beam had struck. "Let's try this!" Lance yells as he dashes right up next to the ship. Lance presses a button to have the blue lion retract it's claws, scratching along the ship. Explosions follow.
"Okay, I think it's time to get these guys away from our planet." Lance says, steering the lion away from the ship and away from earth. The ship seemed to have it's goal set on capturing the lion, because it soon turned and blasted after the lion.
"They're gaining on us." says Pidge, clearly concerned. "It's weird, they're not trying to shoot us, they're just chasing." Lance says. "Where are we?" asks Keith.
"Edge of the Solar System. There's Kerberos." Shiro says as he looks out the window, seeing Pluto and a small moon orbiting around it. "It takes weeks for our ships to get out this far. We got out here in five seconds." says Pidge in a matter-of-fact tone. Suddenly, the lion ejects what looks like a black hole or a portal.
"This may seem crazy, but I think the Lion wants us to go through there." yells Lance, halting his position. "Where does it go?" asks Pidge. "I don't know." replies Lance. "Shiro, you're the senior officer here. What should we do?"
"Look, whatever's happening, the lion knows more than we do." Shiro says. "I say we trust it, but we're a team now. We should decide together." Shiro states as he puts a hand on Lance's shoulder.
"All right, I guess we're all ditching class tomorrow." Lance says as he accelerates through the portal. Before the alien ship could go through the portal, however, it closes.
"I don't recognize any of these constellations." says Shiro. "We must be a long, long way from earth."
"The lion seems to want to go to this planet. I think- I think it's going home." says Lance, as the lion accelerates towards the closest planet. As soon as they enter the planet's atmosphere, the lion appears to catch fire, a shield of heat radiating off due to friction. However, as the lion gets situated to the gravity of the planet, the shield of fire dissipates.
"Um, is it just me or is anyone else having second thoughts about flying through a mysterious wormhole?" Hunk asks, grasping the chair for comfort. "Why are we listening to a robotic lion anyway?"
"It got us away from that alien warship, didn't it?" Lance says as he squints at Hunk.
"I don't know if you noticed, but we're in an alien warship." Keith declares. "Oh, are you scared?" asks Lance. "With you at the helm? Terrified." Keith replies mockingly.
"All right, knock it off." exclaims Shiro. "No one's happy to be in this situation, but we're here now. If we want to get through this, we've got to do it together."
"So, what do we do?" Pidge asks. "It looks like there's a castle up ahead. Maybe that's where this thing is taking us." Lance says, pointing to the castle. It looked like five white and blue mechanical icebergs on a mountain, with a long run-down bridge leading up to it. The blue lion lands at the front entrance of the castle.
"Keep your guard up." Shiro says strictly. "My crew was captured once by aliens once. I'm not going to let it happen again." The lion opens it's mouth to let the group of five out of it's head. After the group is settled on the ground, the lion roars, opening the doors to the castle.
"Hello." Hunk says as the group ventures into the dark castle. "From the size of the lion, I expected the steps to be bigger." Pidge pointed at the stairs, which to their surprise were "human-sized". All of a sudden, a beam of light drops down from the ceiling, capturing them where they stand.
"Hold for identity scan." says a computer voice from an unknown location. A ring of light forms around each of them, scanning from their feet to their heads.
"Why are we here? What do you want with us?" Shiro asks the computer, although it fails to respond to him. Instead, a path is lit , encouraging the group to walk down the corridor.
"I guess we're going that way." says Pidge, starting to walk in the direction of the light. The corridor is long with many winding twists and steps. Each time the group inches forward, a light is lit in the direction they are supposed to go. Finally, a pair of doors open to reveal a room. It seemed to have a control panel in the middle, surrounded with eight concealed cryo-pods.
"Where the hell are we?" asks Lance. "It's some kind of control room." Pidge gasps. The cryo-pods eject from the floor, revealing two frozen people. "Are these guys… dead?" asks Hunk, concerned. The first cryo-pod opens, spilling out a sort of watery liquid. There appeared to be a woman in her early twenties in the pod, "Father!" she gasps as she fell. However, Lance managed to grab a hold of her before she fell to the floor. She had an accent, white hair, and pointed ears, appearing to be not of this world. She grasps Lance for support, as she stands on her feet. Lance smiles and blushes.
"Hello." he says with a sparkle in his eyes. "Who are you? Where am I?" the woman asks.

FFXIV Write 2023 Day 12 - Dowdy
“Oh dear…” Tataru’s clearly sympathetic tone was almost as damning as her pitying sight that followed. Arashi couldn’t help the slump of her shoulders, looking down at the dress she had picked out. It wasn’t that bad, was it?
“No, this won’t do at all. It’s a terrible fit for your figure, and the colour’s all wrong besides. You want to wow her, right? Leave her breathless when she sees you? Well, you’ll achieve the latter, but only because she’ll be laughing so hard. I’m sorry, it has to go.”
Soon enough Arashi was being half led, half herded into the dressing room again, forced to disrobe and hand her selection back to the waiting lalafell. Then she was left to wait, tail smacking the wall impatiently for the fashion expert to pick out a better assortment. Really, it was her own fault. She knew what she’d invited as soon as she mentioned the anniversary dinner to the owner, founder and head of Tataru’s Boutique. It had taken a frighteningly short time for Tataru to arrange a trip to Kugane, free up some of her sizeable coffers and declare a girls’ night on the town. Too late for regrets now…
After an eternity of sitting around in her underwear Arashi was presented with a neatly folded selection of garments that was hastily pushed under the curtain. Arashi gathered them up and laid them out on the tiny shelf in front of her, weighing her options. They were certainly… daring. Was it even proper to be showing that much leg? To say nothing of how the neckline plunged and… well, kept plunging. Arashi looked down at her less-than-generous assets and decided against that particular dress. Perhaps Sanda could pull it off. With a little padding…
The next one was also a no-go. I’m an Au Ra, not a harpy. Far too many feathers. And the one after that was much too sparkly. I’ll have the adoration of spriggan-kind forevermore if I wear that thing.
Just as Arashi was about to despair of her friend’s fashion choices her eyes landed on the last one in the pile. A fetching blue number, not too immodest but also liable to draw the eye where it needed to go. Arashi slipped it on, fidgeting with scales and tail until the dress felt comfortable, then admired herself in the helpfully present mirror. Not bad. While it clung close to her form, it accentuated her form rather than trying to present it as something else entirely. Absent arms revealed her well-sculpted biceps, the sheer cut up one leg exposed her thigh and calf in a pleasing manner, and the red flower accents added a nice contrast to the deep, powerful blue of the fabric. And it felt comfortable. That was the most important part, really.
As Arashi spun and examined herself, another bundle was passed under the curtain. Accessories, it appeared, for the dress. You knew I’d go for this one, didn’t you? Arashi wasn’t sure whether to be annoyed at Tataru’s keen sense of Arashi’s taste or her own predictability. Instead she picked up the bundle, laying it out next to the discarded dresses. A fetching blue hat in the style of the ever-popular Songbirds, a pair of royal blue gloves, some deep purple boots with just enough heel to add a sense of power without feeling like she was walking on stilts, and… shorts. Very silky shorts, clearly designed to go under the dress, but shorts all the same.
Arashi picked up the undergarment, eyebrow raised, only to be surprised as the “shorts” unfolded to reveal a pattern of blues and greens running down the transparent fabric that began where the supposed shorts ended. Oh. A few more minutes and Arashi was dressed to the nines, once again forced to admit that Tataru was the expert for a reason. With a mock huff of frustration Arashi drew back the curtains, waiting to face the inevitable smug look of her friend.
“Oh…” This time Tataru’s tone was, if anything, awestruck. “I knew it would suit you, but I never… Goodness! Right, get out of all that and let’s get this all bought!” Before she could process it Arashi was bundled back into the dressing room, the curtains snapped shut behind her and closing off any chance of arguing. “Maybe I wanted to show off a little,” she muttered under her breath. Nonetheless, she did as she was told. Her travelling gear was a familiar friend after the dizzying array of dresses, but she had to admit it lacked a certain… something. Arashi folded up the garments as carefully as she could, clutching the apparent winners to her chest. She tried not to look at the price tags, flowing handwriting showing a few too many zeroes for her liking. Thank goodness Tataru’s paying.
Tataru, as it turned out, didn’t like that many zeroes either. Or she was simply just a more shrewd businesswoman than Arashi could dream of. Or both. Either way, several minutes of haggling convinced the merchant to reduce the items to a more reasonable price. Even if Arashi was a little embarrassed that Tataru felt the need to bring up her status as the Warrior of Light. Thankfully Tataru Taru felt no shame about using her friend’s status as a hero to earn a discount or two, and eventually a price was agreed upon that still made Arashi wince. Then they were off again, Tataru determined to find “some proper make-up to go with that ensemble!” Arashi, seeing no good outcome from arguing, trailed behind.
Then a sight just out of the corner of her eye brought her to a sudden stop. A brief flash of red trailing a familiar black dress and white tail, both headed in the direction of the shop Arashi and Tataru had just left. Surely not… When she turned to look again, the pair had disappeared into the crowds. Perhaps it was just her imagination. But thinking back on it, Y’shtola had mentioned a few errands to run in Kugane the other day, and while Lyse claimed she was busy with civil matters, M’naago had looked rather unconvinced.
Arashi would have to act surprised when the anniversary dinner came. Hopefully she picks a different dress.

BREAKS DOWN YOUR DOOR TO ASK YOU ABOUT FLAT ESCARDOS
FLAT FLAT FLAT FLAT FLAT!!!! I LOVE TO TALK ABOUT....FLAT! thank u for giving me this opportunity favorite thing about them: everything? lmao, no, in seriousness, it's how much he genuinely loves the world. flat is so excited about every part of humanity and existence!!! he has the kind of authentic joy and appreciation for life that most people lose as they grow up, but even as he grows and changes, he keeps that. flat loves it all and isn't shy about it in the least. i adore him for that. least favorite thing about them: when will my darling little guy develop even an iota of common sense? i get it's for the bit, but come on. give him a dash of it, for my sake. also i hate how he's been totally absent from adventures, but that's just me hating sanda's writing decisions tbh. favorite line: "a human life weighs more than the earth, you know?" brOTP: other than the very obvious and flawless duo of flat and svin (which, like, that should be everyone's first answer tbh), flat and waver have a hilarious platonic dynamic that i love to play around with! also flat and thia, like, holy shit. i did not expect that in volume 7 but i loved it. OTP: VESSEL TRIO OT3 IS SO REAL TO ME. flat/svin/gray is canonical and they are all in love with each other. for peak comedy, see flat/svin/gray/reines, aka waver's nightmare. i also support flat/svin/gray/thia (which is vessel ot4), flat/jack, and flat/any member of the el-melloi class. he's very shippable. nOTP: i don't really have one? like i said, you can ship him with pretty much anyone and it works. he just has that power. random headcanon: even though he grew up in monaco and his first language is french, flat speaks english with a faint cockney accent. this is because as soon as waver took him on as a student, he started copying waver's accent. waver thought he was being mocked for several weeks until he realized that oh, flat really did just actually admire him that much. okay. cool. he has a regular amount of feelings about that. unpopular opinion: flat escardos cheats at every card game you can possibly play. he uses a variety of methods, but mainly he counts cards. i mean, come on, this boy was a child prodigy who grew up on van fem's vampire casino boat!!! you can't tell me he plays an honest game of poker. he's still a sweetheart, but he will rob you blind in texas hold 'em song i associate with them: hyperballad and the modern things, both of which are back to back on my favorite bjork album, post. yes, svin's the one i headcanon is icelandic, but the bjork songs are flat jams. favorite picture of them: he is so cute all of the time, but i love this gem from the apocrypha anime

Lance always wanted to meet a fortune teller. “I met a fortune teller once,” his Mama had said. “She was the one who told me about your Papa. Didn’t give me a name, but described him enough.” Little Lance had been so intrigued that day. He didn’t stop asking his Mama about it for weeks. “When the time is right, you’ll know, mijo,” she said. “I have no doubt you’ll find the right person someday.

When Takashi Shirogane is made the youngest officer in Garrison history, he naturally expects things to change for him. He's given officer's quarters, a fair sight nicer than either the dorm room he had as a cadet, or the small single room he'd been given upon graduation before his promotion. He knows he'll probably get access to different intelligence reports than he was before, but if he's being honest, he doesn't expect much.
He's wrong.
Two weeks into his promotion, he's called into Admiral Sanda's office. She's not alone when he gets there- he recognizes a few other officers, including Commander Holt and Commander Sablan. Commander Iverson joins them momentarily afterwards. Clearly, whatever this is, it's something big.
And it is most definitely that.
The Galaxy Garrison has been monitoring activity on the edge of their system and beyond it for several years now. Whatever it is, it's not human. He doesn't believe it until he sees the visuals for himself- of massive ships larger than anything the Garrison could ever hope to produce. He'd heard that they'd been sending out more long range drones recently, but he didn't think it was for something like this.
They don't know anything about these aliens that are lingering too close to home for anyone's comfort. But there's every reason to believe they're hostile. Even worse, they've found the remains of several alien ships located on Earth. Whoever these aliens are, they've already been here.
A mission is being planned to send a manned vessel out to the edge of the system. The goal is to plant trackers and send out probes that will be able to monitor the activity even better. It will be incredibly dangerous.
They want Shiro as the pilot.
He thinks he understands why. He has no relatives- he has Adam, sure, but Adam is also with the Garrison. And he's also running on limited time. He's one of their best, but is simultaneously someone they can afford to lose.
But there's one more thing.
It's not just ships they found already on Earth. There's also a living, breathing alien. The Garrison has had it in the custody for years now. But when he's brought to see them for himself, they're not what Shiro expects. They look almost human, were it not for the striking purple eyes, a color too impossible to be anything other than alien.
They're also a child.

Years back, after I first wrote my post explaining military structure at the Garrison, I received a lovely ask requesting if I could elaborate on how military personnel advance through the ranks so I threw this post together to help explain it. As a reminder, the military structure I use for the Garrison is loosely inspired on that of the Navy based on the ranks we see in canon. I hope it’s helpful!
Advancement depends on several factors, to include the total time of military service, the amount of time serving in the current rank, the level of responsibility in any current and past assignments, high performance in the individual’s area of specialization, and physical fitness. Enlisted members must also take advancement exams and attend indoctrination classes and seminars. It’s worth noting that, even if an individual meets all of the requirements for promotion, they still need to be recommended by their commanding officer in order to actually achieve it.

OFFICER ADVANCEMENT REQUIREMENTS.
O-1: Ensign ( ENS ) – graduation from a military officer program in the Galaxy Alliance
O-2: Lieutenant Junior Grade ( LTJG ) – a total of 18 months of military service
O-3: Lieutenant ( LT ) – at least 2 years as O-2 and a total of 4 years of military service
Examples: Shiro at the time he was assigned to the Kerberos mission, James Griffin and Nadia Rizavi, the paladins upon their return to Earth
O-4: Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) – at least 3 years as O-3, a total between 9 and 11 years of military service
O-5: Commander (CDR) – at least 3 years as O-4, a total between 15 and 17 years of military service
Examples: Sam Holt, Mitch Iverson, Keith* (post-Galra war in his Healing Wounds verse)
O-6: Captain (CAPN) – at least 3 years as O-5, a total between 21 and 23 years of military service
Examples: Shiro* (after the Garrison mans the Atlas)
O-7 and above: Rear Admiral and above – O-6 must complete a full-term Joint Duty assignment (an assignment where they collaborate with members of two or more of Terra’s military services)
Examples: Ellen Sanda (Admiral, O-10)
* I put stars next to Shiro’s and Keith’s names because theirs were special promotions called battlefield promotions. Battlefield ( or field ) promotions are based on the extraordinary performance of duties while serving in combat and don’t require the officers to meet the time in service or time in rank requirements outlined above.
There are two types of field promotions: standard and jump-step. Standard field promotions are from the current rank to the next higher rank, while jump-step promotions are from the current rank to the rank above the next highest. As leaders of Voltron and the IGF Atlas, respectively, Keith and Shiro were promoted from lieutenants to commanders (and Shiro then to Captain) in the heat of battle against the Galra via jump-step promotions.

You can see the shock on Shiro’s face when he’s suddenly promoted to Captain. He’s probably the youngest Captain in Garrison history.
