The princess's brow furrowed, like the creases of an aged map. She turned to her knight, and found his eyes solely on his shadows, dancing in the wind. She stared, before she, too, looked away.

"In what sense?" she asked.

He chuckled. "If I were the prince and you were the knight, I mean. Would you stay by my side, as I do to you?"

"Of course."

Their eyes met.

His lips quirked, and his dark magic faded into his palms. He shifted closer to her, just a little, though they did not touch.

"Would you really?" he asked.

"Why would I not?"

The knight laughed, shaking his head. "I know few royals who would."

"You have not known many good royals."

"As far as I can tell, neither have you."

"Of course," was his immediate response.

She paused. "But why?"

"Because you're... their daughter?"

"They don't care about that."

He blinked, turning and looking at her with bewilderment on his handsome face. "Why wouldn't they care about you?"

"Oh, they care for me." She huffed, leaning over the balcony with both hands in tight fists. "But they care for as an heir, not a daughter. Not a person."

For a moment, he was silent.

And she was, too.

Finally, he sighed. "Who decided monarchs had to be dicks to their kids?"

"The gods, I assume."
