Samson sat on the steps of the infirmary with an iced coffee sweating quietly beside him, sleeves rolled up, fingers deftly winding some twine around a bundle of purple flowers. A satyr inside was snoring - loudly - and Samson didn’t have the heart to wake them just yet. Instead, he'd let the morning sun spill across his notebook as he made good of some of the observations that he'd been making.

He looked up as someone approached, warming and focusing quickly - smiling shortly after, “Good morning, Adrian.” His tone was still gentle, bright - though a bit groggy. Samson wasn't quite a morning person, his puffy eyes were still winding everything into motion. “Just the person I was hoping to run into.”

After a beat, his smile deepened, finishing tying off the bundle before setting it aside to warm in the morning sun. “I was hoping to find a few things out in the woods... Particularly a laurel tree, maybe some figs; for clarification purposes, while I'm not afraid to go out there alone, I have gotten lost out there once already.” A very embarrassing first day here.

"Damn Adrian, that how that works?" Adam quirked a brow, folding his arms in front of his chest as he considered the other more sincerely, there were so many breeding jokes that he could make - but Adam opted to cut the other some slack. They didn't know each other like that, at least not yet so Adam went easy on him. "This means you're hung like a bear, right?"

“I’d like to think her conceiving me is what makes me her son, but I’m fine with going with that.” Adrian’s smile came a little more relaxed now, knowing he wasn’t the only one who’d had one hell of an experience after the drink. He did wonder if there was something else he was supposed to pick up from it all, though.

All things considered, Adrian looked… normal. He also acted the same way he had before their little celebration started, at least on the surface. Below that, for anyone paying close enough attention, was someone doing their best to appear relaxed while keeping incredibly close attention to every movement in his peripheral vision and any noises close by but just out of his natural view. He wasn’t all that different from a domestic feline, doing its best to relax while natural instincts from their more predatory ancestors told them to stay alert and stay ready to spring into action.

“Don’t completely know what that means, being her son, but I didn’t even know anything about her or her stories until very recently." He scratched behind one of his ears, trying his best not to be unsettled by that or anything else that's happened so far. "I guess I’ll find out soon enough.”

A lot of you underestimate how prevalent British bias is not only in F1 but across sports generally, and even in other industries.

Max saying he has the wrong passport in the paddock is an accurate statement. Do you think he, Seb, or Michael would've been half as vilified by the British media if they had a British passport instead? Would Fernando? Do you think Yuki would get half as much shit about his radio "conduct" if he was British? Because it's the British commentators who consistently have issues with it, and say shit like it's "unbecoming" for a driver to speak that way, ignoring that 1 it's not his first language and 2 IT WAS ENGLISH PEOPLE HE LEARNT THAT LANGUAGE FROM. Sometimes people misspeak, but Yuki has always taken accountability and apologised if he has and if he caused harm. Martin Brundle did not get nearly as much backlash from the media when he misspoke and called an Asian driver a slur while commentating. He also never apologised for it.

Alex, one of the four Brits on the grid but who drives under the Thai flag, has said that the commentators only call him British born when he does well. He was completely excluded from the Silverstone publicity about the home crowd heroes, whereas George, Lewis & Lando were heralded, not only on race weekend, but for weeks leading up to it.

Alex's statement also reminded me of this Richard Harris quote, "When I'm in trouble, I'm an Irishman. When I turn in a good performance, I'm an Englishman." Genuinely, if I took a shot every time a British organisation/person claimed a talented Irish person was actually a Brit, I'd have died from alcohol poisoning years ago.

Hell, I see George wearing the poppy pin this weekend in the lead up to remembrance Sunday. Do you know the amount of shit James McClean gets every year because he refuses to wear one? And he has very valid reasons for choosing not to wear it, yet he's torn to shreds every year by not only random people on the Internet or on the streets but by commentators and the media too.

Because of how this sport became mainstream and because no one challenged Bernie Eccleston's monopoly on broadcasting rights back in the day (people were given the opportunity to buy a share of the broadcasting rights; the idiots said no), this sport has prioritised the British voice/perspective for decades. I know the other broadcasts are just as biased for their home team/drivers, but the British one is the biggest one, as it's the main broadcast for better and more often for the worst. It's the broadcast with the most reach and influence. Their bias has to be challenged eventually if this sport ever hopes to properly expand and grow. The British bias is so difficult to miss once you start noticing it.

For a cynic, it sounded like wishful thinking. There was the thought buried in the far recess of his mind that

"Talents?"

Curiously asked, that could mean anything for an Iskaran. Alrik's first thought was maybe Adrian's mother was as good with a sword as she was at the forge but he wouldn't make any assumptions to start. There were countless stories of the horrific power that the magi could wield, breaking the mind of one, stubborn person had to be as easy as a party trick for them.

Alrik refrained from asking what would change when the man reached Lysara, it seemed like a cruel question to point out that a border wouldn't change anything. Adrian would just be further away.

Adrian stood quietly, this unwavering piece of frangible strength, something that could crumple if pushed too harshly in one direction. He wasn't some snarling barbarian that could tear down packs of darkspawn, nor was he a stealth concealed rogue who could execute an entire line of defense. Adrian had the smallest fringes of magic, a blank slate that screamed liability until it caused his ears bleed and now more despair was being gleaned upon his worried soul.

He could understand it and he could also attempt to fight it ever step frigid step of the damned way. Iskaldrik was no more, a bastion of cruelty under a garish lip of violence; Adrian hadn't detested the life the Gods had blessed him with, but he surely wasn't thanking them either. A sick splinter of gratitude, something negligible and scant nipped at his heels for each step they took away from the Kingdom.

Death was in abundance, loss was contagious, and he'd been lucky enough to form alliances - if that was the word to propose - with a strigoi, a feral girl who barked just as much as she'd bite, and a druid who paraded around as a Jarl for the remnants of this broken Kingdom. He'd count himself lucky that he'd befriended Alrik too, but with his broken leg Adrian couldn't quite count him in the tally he was currently computing.

"My mother was taken. With her talents, she'll survive this," lie, "I just need to find the right people to help grant her refuge." Surely, those she dedicated her livelihood and talents too would lift her and the others from the grasp of the Aetherians, but as the troupe endured, such possibility seemed less likely every minute. "I just need her to hold on until I make it to Lysara." A boy without a voice, a child hidden under a weave of lies, suddenly felt so confident he could command people to save someone in the underbelly of the beast.

Newey: Max is such a self-assured so self-assured. This is not in a positive way, not in a negative way. Max is not arrogant but he's very self-assured and self-confident. And he's a deep thinker. But I don't think he let things like that, I don't really think– they really don't get to him. He's able to shut that off and get on with his job. Get on with his task And do what he loves doing which is driving racing cars.

– Did it get to you?
