With robots, software, and automation, welding isn’t what it used to be
At its most basic, welding’s job in fabricating is to join two pieces of metal. It seems simple but things get complicated pretty quickly in welding. It takes a trainee a while to find the right speed, the right feed, accuracy in the weld line, amount of fill if that’s part of the job—there are probably 20 things to manage during a weld.
The ability to weld is a highly sought-after skill, and people who can do it well are well-paid. The demographics of welders, however, shows that many of them are getting to retirement age, and not enough young welders are emerging to take their place. As with many things in metal fabricating—really, in general manufacturing—automation is invoked as the answer to short supplies of qualified people.
Trumpf’s automatic weld path
Machine tool giant Trumpf released a product that takes care of itself, mostly. It is a robotic welding system uses sensors to program its own weld path. The robot uses the company’s new smart seam-tracking technology, which was developed with Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA. The sensor automatically calculated the weld path for each part. The sensor is located in the welding torch head.
Instead of programming a new weld spot into the software for each change of direction, the user places the robot in the start position, and the technology takes care of the rest. The robot’s sensor determines the weld path automatically. Software calculates the weld spots and creates the program. It all takes a matter of seconds.
This capability will be in all new Trumpf TruArc Weld 1000 products, and can be retrofit into existing robot welders of the same model.
Laser welding advancements
Another titan of machine tools, AMADA, has offered a laser welding robot for a number of years. They offer the Fiber Laser Welder 3000 ENSIS, a complete welding system designed to use minimal heat on the weld zone to improve productivity and weld quality.
It boasts a rotating lense, which means the laser beam is not aligned with a particular point along the target path. The beam circles in a small area as the system does its work. The rotating lens improves filler feeding and aluminum welding. Larger and uneven gap sizes can be bridged in a clean, even weld. The amount of heat input into the material while welding optimizes and improves edge definition.
The unit also comes with a Variable Beam Control unit. It automatically adjusts the beam’s properties to process a wide range of thicknesses. The unit’s power is 3 kW, all generated by a single laser module. This reduces power consumption and negates the need for a combiner for several modules. Any deviations from the actual weld path can be adjusted accurately by utilizing the Teaching Assist System (TAS) on the system’s control. Using a CCD camera, new target points are selected to instantly teach the welding robot the correct target path.
Here come the robots, to a welding shop near you.

Robots with body dysmorphia.
Robots who are jealous of other robots who have a display screen, RGB lighting, or better specs.
Robots who wish they had more versatile hands.
Robots with treads who wish they could walk.
Robots who weld extra metal on their form, wanting accessories and body modifications so badly and taking it into their own hands.
Robots who exchange their parts frequently because they're never quite happy with the replacements.
Large robots who yearn to be smaller, and small robots who yearn to be larger.
Robots with obsolete and ancient frames who dream of what it would be like to have been built with the newest technological advances.
Robots made for war with built-in weapons who are ashamed and embarrassed.
Robots who wish to be different, and would try anything to achieve that goal.

Something for Ratchet getting to know Deadlock/Drift
———————————————————
Ratchet doesn’t know when exactly the giant alien mech that’s fallen into his life became “Kid”. But he knows why.
There’s something to the way the other throws himself at life with a reckless abandon that screams of youth, even as Ratchet is fairly sure by the weathering of the kid’s metal plate that this mech is way older than he is already.
What frustrates Ratchet though is that the kid’s not even subtle in his recklessness. Ratchet’d barely finished welding his injuries before he started poking at the welds curiously. Just a couple days ago, Ratchet had caught him with a can full of neon pink paint halfway to his mouth. And then there’s the way that he still calls Ratchet “Rat”, even as Ratchet scowls at him. Because he knows the kid knows his full name by now and he can tell the kid enjoys getting on his nerves.
There’s the way the mech moves around his workshop. Clumsy. As though still learning to move around for the first time. Ratchet’s lost count of the number of times the mech has smashed lamps, knocked over tables, or nearly damaged delicate medical equipment that Ratchet’s quickly snatched out of his path (because he needs those, and they aren’t nearly as easy to replace as tables or lamps).
And then the day comes when they’re walking out late at night in an abandoned part of town. No one around to see anything suspicious. No one around to help when the alien falls out of the sky in front of them, a mass of writhing tentacles and glowing red eyes.
And Ratchet watches as the kid moves. A blur of motion so fluid and quick that it goes beyond practice. There’s a gun in one of the mech’s hands and a sword in the other. (And where had the kid even been keeping those?)
A slice of the sword sends a tentacle flying over Ratchet’s head. And a short blaze of gunfire later and the alien is nothing more than a corpse oozing green goo onto the sidewalk.
Ratchet is left clutching his wrench and staring up at the kid with something bordering between shock and awe. Reminded that the kid is also a warrior. A warrior ages older and more experienced than Ratchet himself. Deadly, when he wants to be.
Though he’s never shown any desire to hurt Ratchet. In fact, if the way the kid’s looking down at Ratchet as he stows the sword and gun back wherever they came from, the kid feels protective of him. And Ratchet realizes in that moment that he feels the same.
The kid can protect him from the aliens. He vows to protect the kid from what he likely doesn’t know (hopefully will never know). That humans have a darker side, can be just as deadly and dangerous as any of the aliens they’re fighting. And that there are those who will always seek to understand what is new and unexplained by any means necessary.
ANON I LOVE YOU THIS IS WONDERFUL KGJNGNGJFKFMFNCNC
I just. Ahahahahah OH I LOVE to think how much of a disaster Deadlock would be for Ratchet’s workshop hahaha. Everything is on its place? Nope now its not. The whole table got sent to the opposite corner just because your new big ass roommate tripped over it khkhk
ALSO. ehehehe. HEAR ME OUT.
I was thinking a lot about what would Deadlock eat while he’s on Earth. Since in this au Cybertronians doesn’t know Earth even exists so they didn’t get the chance to hide some snacks on it in advance.
So I got this creepy fucking idea. What if he eats the Quintessons?
Remember how some Quintessons are described as organic and some as robotic? And remember how in Transformers Quintessons are always trying to steal some kind of energy from Cybertron? Sometimes it’s energon, sometimes it’s spark energy, you got the idea. I’m trying to say that Quintessons are clearly compatible to Cybertronian energy sources~
So. Wouldn’t it be wonderfully fucked up if Deadlock had to hunt Quintesson robot monsters, kill them, and then drink their fuel out of their lines? Wouldn’t it be crazy gory and fun to think about hmm
Because yeah no the Earth doesn’t have any energon in it and Deadlock is crash landing there so he doesn’t have enough energon just laying around in his pockets.

Perhaps so the universe has a way to make it up to us for everything else going on, there is currently an explosion in really neat laser-based tools. You can get a laser welder, or a laser CNC machine, or a laser engraver, or... a laser level. I swear I can almost afford that last one. They want like fifteen dollars for it at the Princess Auto. Sheesh. It's like they expect their core customer to be employed now.
Although lasers are probably centuries old, according to a drinking-machine summary of a wikipedia article I glanced at while trying to kill time in line at the parole office, it's only recently that humanity has figured out how to make them more affordable for the common, workaday asshole. What's the secret to this incredible advancement in inexpensive optical technology? Have a factory in China build them.
As a result of all this trans-national becheapening, the local "maker space" has acquired for themselves a thousand-watt laser welder. Any moron off the street can use it to stitch two pieces of metal together in a way that would make professional welders poop with envy. Which is perfect, if you're a moron off the street and your $89 Princess Auto "Li'l Don't Look Directly At The Spark Junior Welder's Kit" doesn't quite have the zoot to put those spring perches on a rusty, oily Ford 8.8 you got out of that big F150 crash on the side of the highway last winter.
Like you would expect, it (the welder, not the axle) cost about as much as a good used car used to cost, before used cars cost $20,000. Still, that's peanuts if you have several hundred members who are willing to pay to use it to make Star Wars pirate memorabilia and combat robots. I, however, am not willing to pay. In fact, I have to be forced to spend money on just about anything. So I decided to see if I could just walk in there, use the laser welder to do my daily welding, and then bounce without opening my wallet.
Friends: it worked great. After a couple minutes of pushing buttons and adjusting various screens that I wouldn't bothered to have read fully even if they weren't written in Chinese, I was able to fart on a pair of narrowed spring perches that were ideal for my Viscount.
Now, you might think it's suspicious that I was able to roll a 175-pound chunk of cast iron through the middle of a warehouse full of nerds without anyone asking me for my ID, but it's all thanks to another fancy new consumer of inexpensive lasers: the smoke alarm on the ceiling. I set that sucker off with a brick to the "test" button, before walking right in the front door while dressed as a firefighter. Sometimes, rock beats laser.

Hi guys!
I've made the decision to redesign and write Beatrice… there were things that didn't convince me at all, either with her design, personality or story.
It's been a hard decision for me, I keep very fondly all the drawings that have been made for her (I have them printed on my wall lol) :,)
Well, Meet Beatrice Varmitech!
She is a robot built by Zach as another of his Zachbots, but with a much more advanced AI. As a result, she makes her own decisions, modifies her own programming, appearance and builds her own Bots.
Being a robot, it does not understand human feelings such as sadness, pain, joy, etc. She knows the definitions, of course, but she does not feel them. Nor does it fully comprehend the human body, with its layers of flesh, blood, and bones... Once Zach cut his finger and, in an attempt by Bea to “fix” it, she tried to “weld” the cut, to which Zach yelled at her and asked her why the hell she wanted to do that. Bea, in her ignorance, thought the blood dripping from his finger was an oil leak.
Like Toodles, her voice is realistic, unless her voice bank fails and sounds somewhat distorted and robotic.
Zach, because of his ego and childish personality, never listens to her and doesn't take her advice or plans into account, hence they fail in every evil plan she makes. (Bea cannot disobey Zach, it's the first line of her programming.)
Bea needs to charge her battery occasionally
Zach did not include Jimmy Z as a threat (he actually forgot about him) in her programming, so Bea does not have a need to attack him.
(Sorry if I had grammatical errors, I'm still learning English hehe)

I saw that the request is open, so I thought. How about a first contact au with rotb optimus? I've always liked that old bot haha
Hell yeah I rewatched the movie for this. Sorry it took longer for me to actually write this than I anticipated 😅
Some Things Are More Important
CW: Unintentional fearplay, calling a person “it” (also unintentionally)
Ah, the junkyard. A beautiful array of scrap metal glinting under the sun day after day, perfect for welding and crafting. For the longest time the atmosphere of the place put you off, but your drive to create overtook your fear and replaced it with passion.
The day your life changed was no different than any other. You took your time packing your things, preparing to scavenge once again, though the evening sun was already threatening to advance further down the sky. You didn’t need much, it wasn’t a far trip and certainly not a difficult one. You left in good time, pushing down the uneasy feeling you got when you stepped outside the house.
There was a specific piece of metal you were looking for, one you saw a couple days ago but wouldn’t fit in your cart due to how full it had been. It was the perfect size and shape for what you needed, of course you had to leave behind the one thing you needed now, though it couldn’t hurt to pick up some other materials while you were at it. Masterfully navigating your way through the junk was a special talent of yours, one you were quite proud of, so it struck you as odd when a random truck showed up in the middle of the yard.
It was red and blue, one of those trucks that carried huge cargo boxes and were scary to drive next to. It was pretty beat up, though you can’t imagine why someone would leave it here of all places rather than a used car lot or something. Well, you thought, it wasn’t your problem, so you didn’t treat it as such. You simply continued your search. There were so many great pieces of metal, you ended up staying there until dusk, yet you still couldn’t find the one you were looking for.
Now that you think about it, it must’ve been where that truck was now. Maybe somebody moved it, or worse, took it. It would be a huge bummer to lose such a perfect piece to your puzzle, so you figured staying out to look near the truck wouldn’t hurt anybody.
After around ten minutes of picking through trash, you heard a sound. It wasn’t particularly loud, but it was unnerving to say the least. It sounded like metal scraping together so you brushed it off as the wind blowing on some light metal or something. Five minutes later it happened again, this time louder. Not long after it happened again, and by now you were getting pretty freaked out.
Taking metal from the scrapyard wasn’t particularly illegal, after all you’d learned how to do it properly from your law-abiding friends, however it came with a certain set of risks. Getting cut by rusty metal, stepping on a stray nail, or even getting robbed by someone who preys on scrap pickers like yourself. You didn’t want to know what the sound was and you weren’t about to find out, perfect piece be dammed. It was time to cut your losses.
You didn’t take two steps before it happened.
A strange, mechanical, alien sound rattled from behind you. You whipped your head around despite your survival instincts telling you to run immediately. Before your very eyes the red and blue truck started pulling itself part, little pieces forming a much, much larger figure. It looked nearly human really, if not for being impossibly large and also a robot truck.
A gobsmacked look etched itself on your face, not that you noticed it. You were a little preoccupied at the time, with the giant robot reaching a giant robot hand at you. Just then you realized there was a giant robot hand reaching at you, and you screamed louder than any horror movie victim ever could. The hand froze for a second, taken aback by your sudden noise, but when you remained frozen it continued its pursuit.
It was already too late by the time your body agreed to let you move. Incomprehensibly large fingers wrapped around your comparatively small form, gripping you tight enough to stop any struggles you tried to make. The thing held you up to its face, bright blue eyes shining like headlights in your vision. There were plenty of words that came from your mouth at the time, none of which were at any point comprehendible. To your utter shock, the robot seemed to notice this.
“Perhaps I have downloaded the wrong language pack… or I have found the wrong species…” It said to itself in a distinctly human voice.
“Wh- what the- what are- what are you?” Hooray! You got a sentence out. Your heart was not as excited though, as it felt more like it was going to pound out of your chest.
“So you can speak.” The voice boomed, knocking any hope you had of replying out of your throat.
“What?? What???” You rasped out, two words was better than none, you supposed.
“Did I… break you?”
“Did you- no, no you… didn’t. Please don’t.”
“I do not intend to bring you any harm, little one.“
“Then… stop squeezing… me” The grip immediately loosened. You took in a deep breath of air. “Thank you…”
“My sincerest apologies, I did not mean to hurt you.”
“That’s good to know… but, um, what exactly are you? I asked it before but… you know.” The robot nodded with you, a thoughtful motion but a generally unwelcome one because even the smallest moments it made caused you a bout nausea.
“Yes, introductions. My name is Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots.” Optimus Prime… a strange name. Though it’s not like your current situation was any more normal.
“…I’m Whyen, nice to meet you. Could you… put me down, by any chance?” Optimus nodded, gently setting you down. He stood up again, but realized how much you had to crane your neck up to see him, so he resolved to a kneel.
“What are you.” However tough he looked on the outside, you would feel the sheer curiosity oozing off his voice.
“Uh, I’m a human.”
“Human… and you’re the dominant species on this planet?”
“Yeah, pretty much.”
“I see. I was lucky to find a vehicle mode with your language on it.”
“I… don’t really know what that means but ok. So, what are you?”
“I am Cybertronian, from the planet Cybertron.”
“Huh. Another planet.” You kicked by the oncoming existential crisis in hopes of more answers. “Right… so, if you’re from space, why are you here?” His face suddenly shifted from curiosity to a grim look of remembrance.
“There is a war on my planet. Me and my team have ended up here on accident, I’m afraid.”
“Oh… well, I’m sorry about that.”
“Don’t be, I have no intention of staying here longer than we have to, doing so could endanger this entire planet.”
“Wait, what? The- all- the whole planet?”
“Yes,” He responded in a low, distant voice. “Our enemies, unlike us, would not hesitate to destroy any planet if it meant winning the war.” You started at him in shock. In an attempt to avoid further panic, you decided to take a different route on questioning.
“Who’s ‘us’?”
“The Autobots, my friends.”
“So you’re saying… you’re leading your side of the war? Like a general?”
“Yes, to put it simply.”
“Wow… this is… a lot. How are you going to find your friends?”
“I… do not know. I was attempting to contact them before I noticed you.“
“Oh…”
“Do not worry. If the Deceptions attack this planet, we will protect it with our very sparks. A young species such as yourselves do not deserve to be punished for our mistakes.” Your expression softened. As this metal titan spoke to you, in gentle, deep tones, you felt strangely at peace. You felt silly for ever being afraid of him, like you’d known this alien for ages. He didn’t even know you, yet he was willing to risk his life for your home.
“…Thank you.”
“Do not thank me now, young human, I have yet to get your people out of harms way.”
“What about you?”
“What about me?”
“Are you going to be okay?” Optimus’s eyes widened for just a second before his face broke into a warm smile.
“…I will be just fine.”
“Well, if it’s my planet at stake… I want to help you.”
“Help me?”
“Yeah. I know more about this planet than you do, so I can show you how things work around here. It’s the least I can do.”
“That is very kind of you, you have my thanks.”
“Well, first I have to get home and sleep- my house isn’t too far from here, and I live alone so you don’t have to worry about anyone else freaking out. Not many people live around here.”
“That is good. I… apologies if I am too bold, is it okay if I carry you back to your home? It would be in our best interest to get to your home as fast as possible.”
“Ah, true. Well, I guess so.” He laid out his hand. It took you a second to climb on a stabilize yourself, nodding when you were ready for him to move. And he did, and you guided him all the way home. You hardly even noticed the junkyard and forgotten scrap metal you’d spent the night collecting.
Some things are more important.

Imagine the Ice Emperor's robotic nature, but from the perspective of the people of the Never-Realm, who have zero context for a being like him. They don't have robotics or particularly advanced technology, though they at least have magic to expand their imagination with, and are aware that (some of) the Blizzard Samurai are made of ice.
But still, machinery on the level of Zane must be totally foreign to them. Alien, even, and it technically is if we go by the strict definition of the term. People rightfully assume the Ice Emperor is made of, well, ice; But they aren't aware that he's metal. He has metal organs and bones unlike any creature they have ever seen before. He doesn't breathe; He doesn't eat, doesn't drink, doesn't even bleed. When he is 'asleep' it is like being in the presence of a lifeless statue, that is to say there is no presence, just impersonal cold; One looking for the Ice Emperor might even assume they've only found a statue in his likeness.
Imagine if during those sixty years, someone came close, really close, to defeating the Ice Emperor before the ninja arrived; But they failed and died because they could not have anticipated his nature as a machine. They tear apart the Ice Emperor, his head is rolling at their feet... And his eyes blink anyway. He's still alive. He bleeds not blood but sparks of lightning.
He puts himself back together like a puppet. He creaks and groans and emits strange noises. He does not 'live' in the sense that the Never-Realm understands; He is an uncanny mimicry, not quite moving the same, even more unimaginable beneath the already terrifying exterior. The Ice Emperor doesn't heal naturally, he must weld and fuse his body back into place. Imagine if the evil sorcerer plaguing your lands was finally taken down, only for him to have a second phase where it's revealed he's a Terminator. And when you consider that he's from the future, the comparison to the Terminator is even more apt.
His former Titanium Ninja moniker suggests he's made of the stuff. Had the Ice Emperor not awoken, had Akita gone through with stabbing him with her knife... Would it have just broken against the 'skin' beneath the armor? Would she have not found skin underneath the armor, not realizing the Ice Emperor is armor all the way through? If Akita had made a cut, would it have been enough to actually affect the Ice Emperor in a meaningful way, for a slashed neck is not as much to a machine as it is to one of flesh and blood?
There's just a lot of potential when it comes to exploring the Ice Emperor from an eldritch horror angle, an alien that even Vex is lowkey afraid of, because obviously he came from somewhere, someone made him; What is that world like? It'd be like meeting the Iron Giant and realizing he was built originally as a weapon. What if the rest of that world comes for us, wondering where their scout went?

i think the reason i like mediums that mix futurism/scientific advancement/sci-fi/etc. with religion is that its really interesting to see where the ouroboros meets. the oldest forms of moral guidelines and hope and belief and community meet total technological advancement, and rather than being at odds, theyre seamlessly integrated into each other - mosques and altars and temples and churches on abandoned space ships, robots that dedicate 1% of their processing power at all times to praying to the divine spark of life that gave them intelligence. gospel synth. old churches augmented with metal - wires in the stained glass like veins. neon angels. symbols of belief welded to limbs so you cant lose them. some far off cosmic horror that looks like god in the right light. the act of grounding yourself to home a million miles away.
#personal#i just think spirituality is neat#youve heard of philosophical robots. now get ready for#this robot has invented Catholicism 2

I don't think calculating Amy's strength through the Piko Piko Hammer is as straightforward as the wiki implies.
It says that the hammer appears quite heavy, but it's not. It makes a squeaky sound. The piko piko hammer is a popular toy in Japan, and Amy was given it at first as a bit of a joke. Nevertheless, if you play as her in Sonic the Fighters, you can theoretically win your way through: it may be a squeaky thing, but she knows how to use it.
The hammer may be a toy, but undoubtedly, it's capable of smashing metal, which would imply Amy is strong enough. How strong compared to the others? Now that's a different story. In Sonic Advance 3, everyone gets a hammer when paired up with her, and they all more or less swing it with the same speed and strength - Tails uses both hands instead of one, but I don't think it necessarily denotes that he's weaker (I don't believe he's weaker than Cream lol), maybe it's to be more precise. Still, every character is equal.
However, still in Advance 3, when Amy herself is paired with Knuckles, she gets a hammer that never appeared again, a giant fuck you hammer that takes a whole second to swing and makes a strong booming noise, implying that unlike the original one, this is a serious weapon - Amy destroys walls with it.
I guess we can say that Amy has a moderate amount of raw strength in her, because she's able to use a toy as a destructive weapon. And yes, she also accidentally made Knuckles fly away in Lost World. However, that's not enough to deduce that she, by herself, is a complete powerhouse that would put Knuckles to shame. Amy's skills seem to rely more on agility (she's usually considered a Speed character, one of her iconic move is the Hammer Jump) and tool prowess to keep up with the others.
... and in any case I wouldn't use IDW as proof only for the fact that it thinks the Egg Hammer's hammer would make a piko sound just because it's Amy swinging it. on top of implying she's somehow stronger than fucking Silver's telekinesis, the guy who stopped a mini meteor flung by a god. lol
"The piko piko hammer appears quite heavy*!"
*source: I made it up.
People always have such a waffles response whenever I say anything. "OH HOW CAN YOU SAY AMY ISN'T STRONG" I didn't, I said she isn't stronger than Sonic or Tails and CERTAINLY isn't anywhere even close to being as strong as Knuckles.
I compared her to fucking Yamcha for crying out loud. Do they think I'm saying that Yamcha isn't strong?
Compared to 99.999% of the population of the planet earth, Yamcha is IMPOSSIBLY powerful. He could blow up the entire planet if he wanted to. He only pales in comparison to his friends. But compared to the average normal person, Yamcha is a fucking god.
That's Amy. She is ludicrously powerful by relative comparison to the vast majority of the population of Sonic's world. She can and has fought and overcome entire armies of Eggmans robots single handedly. She uses a toy hammer the same way John Wick uses a fucking pencil. The PENCIL isn't special, John Wick is. The piko piko hammer isn't special, it's a fucking toy. Amy is just that badass. Pretending the piko piko hammer is uniquely powerful or heavy doesn't make Amy seem more impressive for welding it, it just makes her LESS special. Amy is powerful because she was inspired by Sonic and underwent character development to grow and improve herself to be capable of defending herself and others against deadly robots, and she can casually dispatch them with EASE.
But she is NOT stronger than Sonic. She is NOT stronger than Tails. She is NOWHERE EVEN CLOSE to being anywhere NEAR as strong as Knuckles. She isn't fucking beating ANY of them in an arm wrestling contest. She wouldn't last three fucking seconds. The only person she is probably stronger than is Cream, memes aside. And maybe Wave. Definitely Marine. And Charmy. And Ray. Maybe Trip. But not stronger than Sonic or Tails.
End of discussion.

Chapter 2
Six months.
To you it feels like it was just yesterday when you found him. Six months ago you were heading out to the bar with your friends when you stumbled upon boxes full of parts, parts that belonged to a Freddy Fazbear animatronic from the Mega Pizzaplex that tragically collapsed not too long ago.
As soon as you found those boxes that night you forgot all about the bar, instead making your friends carry it all the way back to your house where you would immediately get to work. It was safe to say your small group of friends were very displeased with you.
Six months of rewiring, welding, programming, repainting, you name it. You can’t even count the all-nighters while juggling two jobs and taking college classes in the mornings. All of this to work on a single animatronic, an animatronic that failed to work countless of times.
Yet tonight you had a good feeling. You've convinced yourself this was it, that all the work you did would finally come together. This was the night you turned something from scrap into a proper working model.
You can see it now, you’d be the talk of the class, you’ll probably make the news for doing this! All the frustration, all the tears, it was worth it. Especially with the fact that you were able to recover most of his highly advanced AI, something the Mega Pizzaplex was well known for.
You sit at your desk in the middle of the night, the large animatronic bear laid upon a metal table in your garage, wires hooked up to your computer as you type commands with quick fingers on your keyboard, a cigarette dangling loosely from your lips.
You glance over at Freddy, admiring your handiwork with an anxious gaze. Adorned in a glossy metal casing with intricate vibrant blue designs you hand painted yourself, he looks exactly like his old self.
You take in a slow breath as you switch your gaze over to your computer, you fixate on the startup command, rereading it over and over to make sure you spelled everything right.
“Here goes nothing.” You murmur as you press the enter key on your keyboard.
You roll your chair back, turning it towards Freddy with bated breath as everything slowly begins to power on, this seems promising, considering the fact the entire house hasn’t lost power yet.
You hear the sounds of machinery humming to life as the seconds passed, smoke beginning to plume from his open mouth. You sit up in your chair, snubbing the cigarette in the ashtray beside you while you avidly wait to see what happens.
Freddy’s eyelids were the first to slide open, a vibrant blue glow pouring out of his optics. Then with the sound of motorized joints snapping to life Freddy abruptly sits up on the metal table, he appears panicked as he looks around in frantic motions. You are too shocked to say anything as he looks down at himself, letting out a disgruntled groan before ripping the wires out from his ports which causes sparks to fly.
He gets off the table and you are thoroughly reminded just how big he is. His eyes finally locked onto yours, his gaze was full of bewilderment and something else that makes you want to run away.
“Where am I? This is not the Mega Pizzaplex.” He held a strong, thunderous voice that reverberated throughout the garage.
Your eyes widen at the question, not expecting for him to be almost hostile right off the bat. Your heart begins to pound in your chest, reaching your ears as you stare up at him in both pride and a twinge of fear.
It takes you a moment but you finally find your voice, uttering out your words. “You’re um, you’re in my house! I just repaired you, you are safe from any harm.”
Freddy looks tense, well, as tense as one could look for being a robot. His expression softened yet the confusion remains palpable. “Repaired me… I was offline?”
You slowly nod your head. “Yes, I found you near a dumpster not too long ago and I took you back home with me.”
“I see.” He looks back down at you with sorrow in his voice. “I do not remember getting shut down… Have they replaced me with a new model?”
“Do you… Not remember anything?” You ask your question carefully and he shakes his head. Damn, you were really looking forward to knowing what happened to the Pizzaplex.
“Well, the Mega Pizzaplex collapsed around seven months ago. I found you a month later sitting near a dumpster, took you home and…” You gesture to the area around you. “Here you are now.”
Freddy was silent, you can see the literal gears turning in his head as he processed the information you just gave him.
“This can’t be. There is something wrong, it feels as though something is missing in my memory storage.” He places a paw-like hand on his head, looking down at the floor.
“Yeah, your memory was pretty corrupt when I started my repairs on you. I got most of it recovered but I had to give up on some of it. I still plan on trying to fix it but I focused more on getting you back in working order first.”
His hands fall to his sides, giving a nod of his head. “I understand, the fact you were able to recover most of it is fantastic.” He takes a step closer to you, speaking in a more tentative tone. “I apologize, I have been rather rude haven’t I? I’d like to thank you for bringing me back online. I am very grateful.”
You wave your hand. “Don’t worry about it, I get it. I would be pretty freaked out too.” Yet that was because you are human, never in a million years did you expect such a reaction coming from him.
“Yes, ‘freaked out’ is the perfect description isn’t it?” His ears droop down, a mix of melancholy and gratitude evident on his features. “The Pizzaplex… it is gone. What is to become of me? What purpose do I have now?” A hint of uncertainty colored his words, seemingly hoping to get some guidance from you.
Your face softened, it was clear he was uneasy with this entire situation. The Mega Pizzaplex was once a beacon of joy and entertainment has met its demise. Now here he is, standing in your garage, given a chance at a new life.
Finally, you answer him, offering him a smile of kindness and understanding. “Sometimes you don’t really need a purpose, or a duty to fulfill.” You lean back in your chair, shrugging your shoulders. “I mean, you’re pretty much free now. I’m sure you’ve never seen the outside world once in your entire ‘life’. That makes it not sound too bad, right?”
His eyes flicker with apprehension while mulling over your words. It was clear the concept of freedom was completely foreign to him, which of course, was understandable.
“You’re right, that doesn’t sound too bad at all. The thought of experiencing new things… It is rather intriguing. And having you by my side,” He comes in closer, a soft look on his face. “Well, that would make it all the more exciting.”
As soon as Freddy got a bit too close for comfort you rolled your chair back. You feel nervous but you're also astonished, you can't believe you actually pulled this off, he was really here.
"Well, I'll be here every step of the way." You force a tight smile. He takes notice of your discomfort, taking a step back and making you realize you have been holding your breath this entire time.
“That sounds like a plan! We’re going to be a great team, you and I.” Freddy now seems more relaxed as he looks around your messy garage full of parts and trash. “Is this all to your home?”
You let out a laugh from his question, standing up from your chair. “No, no this is just my garage.”
“Oh! Yes, I see. A garage, a building for housing motor vehicles! But… I do not see a motor vehicle here.”
“It’s outside in the driveway. I use this as an office, robotics, school work, all that jazz.”
“An interesting place to choose as your workplace! I see that it is quite… cluttered.”
“Wait till you see the rest of the house bud.” You let out a chuckle. “Follow me.” You lead him to the door that leads outside, opening it up and taking a step out.
“That sounds a little concerning.” He murmurs cautiously while following after you.
As soon as he walks out of your garage he stops in place once he sees the blanket of twinkling stars above him. “Oh… Wow.” He holds a soft tone full of genuine wonderment as his eyes widen.
You watch his reaction, feeling a flutter in your chest as you see a machine experience a true night sky for the first time. You still can’t believe you really did it, he was here and he appears so life-like- almost as if he has real emotions.
Yet… That wasn't possible.
Just as you started to really think about it all you were immediately captivated by glowing blue optics looking down at you.
“This is incredible.” He remarks. “A glimpse into something absolutely extraordinary. All thanks to you, superstar.”
Your heart skips a beat. Superstar… It sounds comforting coming from him with his honeyed voice.
After a few moments pass you realize the two of you have just been staring at each other in silence. You clear your throat, offering him a smile.
“Of course big guy.” You place your hands in your pocket to keep them warm from the cool night air, looking back up at the sky with him. “Welcome to the real world.”
The two of you stand there in silence, the ethereal beauty of the stars capturing your attention and filling you both with a sense of tranquility. The sounds of the crickets and frogs, the branches of the large trees surrounding your small home moving with the light breeze.
Although it was all starting to feel a bit strange, you have someone-or something-by your side now. As a person who usually lives on your own, you finally realize that this was going to take some getting used too. He was a lot more lively then you thought he’d be.
Freddy is the first to break his trance, his voice pulling you out of your thoughts. “How about we head inside now? I am eager to see your home.”
You snort, walking away from the garage and towards the front porch. “There’s nothing to be eager about but… It’s home.” As you go up the steps and to the front door you begin to feel a bit nervous, you never thought you’d be embarrassed to show your living space to a robot.
“It can’t be that bad.” He speaks in a cheerful tone as you open the door, taking a step inside with him. “Oh… Oh my.”
You feel your face heat up as the two of you look around your home. It was cluttered as cluttered could be, the kitchen and living room merged seamlessly creating an open area of utter chaos. An array of dirty dishes and utensils stacked up together from countless culinary endeavors, the smell of forgotten meals and cigarettes intermingling in the air.
Your living room was no better. Scattered papers, cigarette butts and empty bottles of beer haphazardly placed about on the floor and coffee table. The nicest thing there was the sofa, mostly because you got it not too long ago on a good sale.
There was a long silence that passed between the two of you. He was the first one to break it.
“This isn’t like the Pizzaplex at all.” He looks over at you and you give him an apologetic smile. “But… It has some charm to it.”
You let out a surprised, short laugh, raising a brow. “Yeah? How so?”
“Well, the one thing I know is that a home is a reflection of oneself.”
“What does mine say about me?”
He inspects his surroundings more before giving you his answer. “It appears that you lead a very busy lifestyle, or that you greatly struggle with caring for yourself.” Freddy’s tone was analytical, tilting his head to the side. “Is that right?”
“Yup, spot on for both.” You make your way to the couch, falling down onto it and stretching your arms up into the air. “Two jobs, school, it’s not really easy maintaining a home.. Or myself.”
“That does sound like quite a lot on your plate.” He takes his place near the couch, his hands behind his back as he continues to observe your home. “Perhaps I could be of assistance to you.”
“Of assistance to me…?” You repeat his words slowly. He gives a short nod of his head.
“Yes. You have brought me back online, the least I can do is help you around the house. Cooking, cleaning, helping with school work. Whatever you need.”
You’re a bit taken aback by this offer, you had no idea you have quite literally built your own assistant. It sounds like a sweet deal, you’ve never had anyone willing to help you like this but at the same time you feel a tug at your heart.
“Um… Well, that sounds nice and all but you don’t owe me anything, really. I just wanted to see if I could do it, show off to my professor and…” You trail off, realizing how much you didn’t think about what happens after you built him.
“I insist. I want to do this, eager even. It will be a great help for me when it comes to adjusting to this new life, at the Mega Pizzaplex I always had something to do. Knowing that I no longer have that,” He casts his gaze to the side before continuing. “It feels as though there is something wrong within my coding.”
You run a hand through your hair as you process what he was saying, searching his face. You let out a long sigh, finally giving your answer.
“Yeah, alright. If you’re cool with it, I would really like that.”
Freddy clasps his hands together, taking on a cheerful demeanor. “It is very cool with me, superstar! This is the start to something wonderful, I just know it. Let’s get started now, tell me, when was the last time you’ve eaten today?”
“Um… Never o’clock?” You answer with a sheepish smile.
He looks confused at first, squinting his eyes before they widen once the realization sets in. “Are you meaning to tell me that you have eaten nothing today?”
“That is not good, do you not know how important it is to have proper meals throughout the day?” Freddy shakes his head as he reprimands you, turning around and going to the kitchen to begin to find you something to eat.
“Well yeah, it was my last day off and I wanted to finish working on you. It kinda slipped my mind.”
“Well yeah, of course I do. Like I said, I just didn’t really think about it.” You get up from the couch to follow after him, taking a seat at the table full of old letters and trash.
“I see that my work is cut out for me, hm?” His tone was playful as he opened the fridge.
You feel your face heat up from his teasing, grumbling underneath your breath as you take your cigarette pack from your pocket to have a quick smoke.
“You do not have much to eat…” He murmurs as he closes the fridge to go open a cupboard. “Hm… Well, it is not the most nutritious of meals, but I could make you macaroni and cheese.”
Your eyes light up from his words, recently it’s all been instant ramen noodles, mac and cheese sounds perfect right now. “Yeah! That sounds good.” You light the end of your cigarette, leaning back in your seat as you watch Freddy get to work.
Your brows furrow as you blow smoke out from your mouth. “Actually wait… You do know how to cook, right?”
“Of course I do! Back at the Mega Pizzaplex it was a common activity to bake or cook with children, I have plenty of recipes and have the capability to learn more. It was one of my favorite things to do, although it was not too often. Chica was the one to always be the leader of those little ‘classes’.”
“Wow, that’s pretty cool honestly.” You watch as he goes to the sink, taking one of the least dirtiest pots and beginning to wash it out. It was interesting to see an animatronic bear doing such a mundane chore.
You let out a small hum before drawing on the end of your cigarette. “So… Do you really not remember anything of what happened before? Like… How the Plex collapsed and what not?”
Freddy stills for a moment, trying his best to remember what happened but he mimics the sound of a sigh and continues his task.
“Unfortunately, my memory prior to being decommissioned is fragmented at best. I recollect my performances and entertaining children but as for the details of its closure, it remains a mystery to me. I apologize.”
A guilty frown tugs at the corners of your lips as he finishes washing the pot and filling it up, moving to the stove to boil it.
“There’s no need to be sorry. I wasn’t expecting you would, I guess what you lost was the night of you getting.. Destroyed. I’ll figure it out in due time, it would be nice to know what actually happened.” You stub your cigarette out on the ashtray, leaning your head on your hand as you continue to watch him work away.
“What do you mean by that? Does no one know what has caused the Mega Pizzaplex to collapse?” He turns his body towards you with a curious glint in his eyes.
You shake your head. “Nope. They tried saying it was from an earthquake but no one believes it, considering the fact no one living near the Pizzaplex felt one big enough to mess up an entire building.”
“I… See, that is quite strange. Well, if there is any chance of recovering those lost memories and shed some light on what truly transpired, I am very eager to explore it alongside you.” His gaze was filled with unwavering dedication.
You feel a small amount of excitement from his words, you were pretty eager too if you were being honest with yourself. “Yes, we’ll figure it out. Maybe. If we don't, oh well, y’know? You’re here now, that’s all that matters.”
You lean back in your chair, looking the bear up and down as excitement bubbles up once again. “I’m more than happy with the progress I’ve made today. You’re working, talking! After all these months you’re finally here.”
Freddy lets out a soft chuckle as he goes back to the stove to put the pasta in the water. “I am continuously impressed by your talent. You have proven yourself to be quite the extraordinary individual.” He looks back at you as he speaks. “You bringing me back is very impressive, you should be proud of yourself for doing such a hard task.”
Your eyes widen as you are showered with praise, feeling your breath hitch in your throat. You aren’t very used to such compliments.
You clear your throat, beginning to play with the sleeves of your hoodie. “Well, um, thank you Freddy.” Your eyes fall onto his hand while he stirs the cooking pasta. “That’s… That’s really sweet of you. I’m glad you think that way.”
He picks up on your timid behavior, looking back at what he was doing while he replies to you in a mellow tone. “You deserve every word of praise.”
The two of you fall into a comfortable silence afterwards, you can’t help but feel a little overwhelmed by it all once again. Two years of living completely alone and now you have a roommate, who was a giant animatronic bear that you just met and he is already cooking for you. This was insane.
After some time there was a bowl of mac and cheese set in front of you. You watch the steam emit from it as you feel your stomach growl, you didn’t realize how hungry you were until now.
“Thank you so much.” You murmur out appreciatively, picking up the spoon and popping it in your mouth. Your eyes widen, looking up at the bear who has a satisfied look on his features. This didn’t even taste like box mac and cheese… How does one make boxed mac and cheese taste so good?!
You swallow your food before praising him. “God Freddy, what did you do while I looked away? This is great!”
He lets out a mechanized chuckle, pulling out the chair and sitting down. It creaks underneath him, making you feel a bit sorry for his seat.
“Nothing special, just some seasonings with extra cheese. I’m glad you like it, although I implore you to go grocery shopping soon for more nutritious meals, you are worth more than macaroni and cheese and ramen.” His tone becomes serious at the end and you feel your cheeks heat up.
“I see you found my ramen stash.” You chuckle before taking another bite.
“I did. You have a tremendous amount… It’s insane.”
You snorted from his words, he wasn’t wrong, ramen is what you thrive off of.
“It’s quick and easy! Pop in the microwave, badda bing badda boom a 50 cent five course meal.”
“That… That is not a five course meal!” He sounds almost offended, a surprised look in his eyes. “And in the microwave? You do not cook it on the stove?”
“Nope.” You draw the word out slowly, a small smile on your lips as you gauge his shocked reaction. It takes him a few moments but he finally regains his composure.
“I see, well, that’s alright. It is just something we will have to work on together. I will write you a list and when you have the time I really encourage you to get these items, it will help me cook even better meals than this one. Does that sound good to you?” His tone was much softer now, comforting and unjudging.
“Yeah, that sounds good to me, I’ll go out shopping after class tomorrow.”
“Oh, you have class tomorrow? At what time?”
“Five am.” You say casually while taking another bite of your mac and cheese.
“Five am? Superstar, it’s 2 in the morning.” He seems genuinely concerned for your well being now more than ever, having him here with you is really reminding you how much you don’t take care of yourself and you just finished repairing him.
“I know, I know.” You sigh out, eating the last of your mac and cheese. “I’ll go lay down right after I bring your charger inside.”
Freddy takes the bowl in front of you, getting up and putting it in the sink. “It is best if you go to bed right now. Just tell me what to do and I will set the charger up myself.”
“Um… Are you sure?” You quirk a brow. “It might be easier if you let me do it so you know what to do next time.”
“Nonsense, I can handle it, I am Freddy Fazbear!”
A small chuckle falls past your lips. “Well, if you say so. There is a large, modified battery sitting near my work bench, set up on the couch and plug the cord into the port on your arm. Then all you gotta do is flip the switch and you’ll begin to charge.”
“I see… Sounds easy enough, if I need assistance I will ask you. Please go rest now, I will see you in the morning.” There was a kindness in his optics, bringing you a sense of comfort.
“I hear you.” You huff, getting up from your seat turning around to head to the stairs. “Goodnight Freddy, see you in the morning.”
“Goodnight, superstar.”
With that you leave to go up to your disarrayed room, kicking off your pants and climbing into your large comfortable bed. Although as soon as your head hits the pillow and your eyes fall closed the only thing you could think about was your new roommate.
