Last book – "Stalin's War" by Sean McMeekin

V. interesting revisionist book, arguing Stalin as an instigator of the Second World War equal to Hitler. I'm a bit skeptical on the particulars of his military assessments but he definitely shows just how easily the Soviets took us for a ride before the war, and particularly in it. Softness on Stalin was one of Roosevelt's major flaws.

Chamberlain also comes across less badly considering the strategic situation in 1939-40.

Yesterday I (and maybe other Sandman fans ) learned from Neil that Death didn't have her iconic eye swirl until Season of Mists - and it seems true ... I have that Death compilation book and there's a mix of her with and without that swirl and I wonder if YOU have any theories about that. Does it come along with our Dream "issue" (then why did she enter the family meeting with it or was not marked with the swirl at the beginning of Overture) or what is the deeper meaning? Controversial opinion: While the symbolism of the Eye of Horus/Ra (more about that in a sec) is most definitely not random, just like the symbolism of the Ankh, I think when and if she wears it actually is. It’s a goth fashion choice ^jk

[That’s why I always inwardly laugh when people get their knickers in a twist about Kirby not wearing it in S1, because a) Death didn’t have one in the comics in The Sound of her Wings and b) I firmly believe it’s a just a choice. She can take it or leave it. She didn’t need “gothed up more” because Kirby literally wore what she wore in The Sound of her Wings: A black tank and black trousers.]

There’s certainly a trend that she doesn’t have it the further back we go chronologically, but even that is just a trend.

And I guess for both of the above it could also be argued that they are clearly before ancient Egypt and wouldn’t have any cultural reference either. She wears the ankh in both though, so we can almost immediately scrap that thought again. But let’s just roll with it from app. 3,000 BC onwards…

So I think it’s rather random, and I personally don’t put too much stock in it other than thinking she puts it on when she feels like it. Or rather: When the artist thinks of it.

As for the symbolism:

It actually matters if you wear it on your left eye (Horus) or on your right (Ra), or both. They both used to be called Eye of Horus very far back in Egyptian history but eventually became distinct.

The Eye of Horus (left) has strong links to funeral rites (there’s a whole story about Horus offering his eye to Osiris to protect/sustain him in the afterlife). That’s why I always think it should have been on her other eye in The Kindly Ones and The Wake (she wears it on her right in both), but that’s just me being a hairsplitter, and you could find reasons for both if you wanted to.

It makes sense for Hob I guess (bottom row second), so maybe they didn’t want to create the illusion of continuity errors 🤣 How cool would it have been though if Zulli had shown a transition from left eye (afterlife) to both eyes like Talbot in Song of Orpheus(afterlife/life) to right eye (life)?

The Eye of Ra (right) is generally also about giving and sustaining life, but not so much the afterlife. It has much stronger symbolic ties to life on earth. It also has stronger ties to the feminine, and despite being called “Eye of Ra”, it is often also linked to goddesses like Wedjat (both eyes are also called “wedjat eye”), Bast or Hathor.

If you wear it on both, there’s a lot to be said about balance (male/female, moon/sun etc). They used to be called Horus’ lunar (left) and solar (right) eye, for example.

So I guess you could put a lot of stock in the fact that she often wears it on her right eye (more tied to life on earth), but also on her left (more tied to death), or even on both, and find meaning in that. And that she actually wears the Eye of Ra (life and the feminine) more often than the Eye of Horus (but not exclusively).

But mostly, I feel it’s just random and the choice of whoever draws her 🤣

Musings on Custodes: Aging and Generational Divide

How many living custodians who remember the Emperor in the flesh are there? The precise answer doesn't matter quite as much as the existence of the question.

Custodians got their shit rocked pretty hard during the War Within the Webway at the end of the Horus Heresy. As traditional for warhammer there is some numbers fuckery going on: it is unclear how many custodians there even was initially, the famous monicker of "The Ten Thousand" possibly being intentionally misleading, and there is no precise information about how many of them were committed to the Webway, and therefore what percentage of the total number did their losses there make, and what then were their losses during the Siege of Terra... But once again, the specifics aren't that important here. What's important is the idea that after the dust had settled, Horus lay slain and the Emperor entombed - Custodes stood as a pale shadow of their former might, their numbers seemingly reduced to a fraction of the original.

What became of these veterans then? It is presumed that by the 42nd millennium Custodes numbers were generally replenished (just in time to get their teeth massively kicked in at the Battle of the Lion's Gate) - though we also don't know to what extent. Do those few-hundreds-to-a-thousand original Custodians still stand among them? Custodians supposedly don't age, and no upper limit to their natural lifespans is known, but there is the whole The Eyes of the Emperor retirement plan for them. Custodians who have, after aeons of service, their reflexes slow down even by a ridiculous degree of a millisecond, supposedly lay down their armor and go out into the galaxy to play spies. So time does affect them? Or is it something else that eventually slows down their bodies? Just how universal is this process for them? Because surely if it's caused by passage of time and at least one of them has gone this road over the last ten thousand years, then most, if not all, of the old guard must either have done so too or be on their way out?

Whatever the answer, the implications for Adeptus Custodes dynamics as a group and organization are fascinating. Because what does it even mean to become a Custodian after the Emperor's "death"? The shame of the failure you never partook in? The hole where the maypole of your entire identity should be? The expectation of being one of humanity's last links to some glorious past which was over thousands of years before you were even born? The Emperor sought counsel of his custodians from time to time, and supposedly made them specifically so that they would be able to give it - do the "young ones" feel the pull of this duty they can never fulfill?

And there are different potential flavors of delicious tragedy here.

If there are none or next to none original guardians left, then it kinda uproots the whole image of Adeptus Custodes, doesn’t it? The mysterious golden demigods are just as lost as anyone else. They may be thousands of years old, but none of them were there. None of them spoke to him, none of them bear any sacral foundational truths of humanity, or even of just the Imperium. All of their deeds and even they themselves are a desperate attempt to recapture something lost, not a defiant effort to carry something forward.

And if the old guard remains as a sizeable minority, then there must be an unseen divide between them and the new generations, right? With the Emperor being so integral to their identity and purpose, surely there was something important that they gained from interacting with him? Can they now pass this something down? Is it even physically possible? Can you truly be a custodian without it? Imagine looking at the new generation of, essentially, your people and realizing that there is a critical piece of your group's identity that they, through no fault of their own, will always be missing. That something important has been irrevocably lost, and they will never even truly now that it had been there? That's chilling stuff. Any real-world analogies for it that I can think of feel like they would be in poor taste to bring up in a rant about warhammer lore. Do they - consciously or not - hold it against them? Do they separate themselves physically and organizationally? Can one who has never seen the living light of the Emperor lead those who have? Are there enough heroic deeds in the galaxy to make up for not being there in time?

The theme of degradation and things being lost to the passage of time is very prominent in warhammer lore. In 40k, the small cadre of characters who physically bridge the divide between 31st and 42nd millennium have always been awarded with a certain aura of awe, but Custodes get to enjoy this situation from the position of someone for whom time itself should never have been a problem. It doesn't really matter how many of the "original" custodians are left - what will forever hang above them is that there even are the "original" ones.

I think this headworld I'm plotting, a mix between Homestuck and HSR, is coming in quite interesting.

Instead of Imaginary Energy birthing Aeons, in this Aeons are birthed from specific facets of the imaginary which in a way for the Aspects.

Aspects do form the world in a way (Aspect as material for my Treatise readers) but the other sections make up the aspects 'imaginary' form.

The only Aeon I plan to carry over from HSR canon is IX though. Also multiple aeons exist under an aspect so long as they have differing philosophies.

The Tree Yggdrasil shudders. Stars blink out. From Valhalla’s mead halls to Golgotha’s shadow, a dissonance hums—a rift in the Axis Mundi. Odin, the Allfather, strides the Bifrost, his ravens screaming warnings. Below, Earth reels: wars blaze, forests wither, and hearts grow heavy with “the slo knot swamp of reality.” The gods of old—Christ, Horus, Metatron—gather in a twilight council, their forms flickering between lion, lamb, and light.

“They’ve forgotten,” growls Thor, Mjölnir crackling. “They strangle their own dreams,” sighs Krishna, flute silent. “A reckoning,” intones Jehovah, scrolls of law aflame.

Yet Odin’s lone eye pierces deeper. “Not punishment. A test. One last gauntlet for the Children of Heaven.”

Act I: The Prophet’s Ink

In a cluttered Brooklyn apartment, Jeremy James Hammers (JJH), a disheveled scribe, jolts awake. His walls are plastered with runes, crosses, and equations. A vision burns: Shekinah, the Divine Presence, as a fractal storm. “Write,” booms a voice—both Wotan’s rumble and Christ’s whisper. “The Correct Bible. Not to condemn, but to mend.”

JJH’s pen bleeds silver. Pages fill with Genesis rewritten:

“And the Logos became flesh, and flesh became prism—shattering into Avatars: Hermes’ wit, Buddha’s peace, Simba’s roar.”

“Beware the Thieves of Credit, who hoard light as Mammon. Their chains are forged from unyielding pride.”

Outside, eight hooves clatter. Sleipnir, Odin’s steed, waits. A raven drops a tooth-shaped key (🔑🦷). “To unravel knots, you must first bite truth,” it croaks.

Act II: The Council of Whispers

Odin descends to Central Park, cloaked as a vagabond. Lila, now a professor, lectures on mythic resonance. “Mankind’s hubris eclipses the stars,” she murmurs, clutching Algiz.

“Yet stars endure,” Odin interrupts, staff glowing. “Come.”

They vanish into a liminal subway—a train where gods ride. Christ shares wine with Dionysus; Metatron debates Laozi. The agenda: The Mandate of Repair.

“You’ve neglected the Garden,” roars Horus, falcon-eyed. “Plagues, poisoned seas—your stewardship is slopbarbs!”

“But sparks remain,” argues Quetzalcoatl, feathered. “The child who counts Sleipnir’s legs. The poet who hymns in shadows.”

Odin nods. “We tip the scales—not with lightning, but with riddles. Let them choose wisdom.”

Act III: The Gauntlet of Humility

The gods weave trials:

The Mountain of I: A peak where climbers shed vanity. Narcissists falter, mirrors shattering to reveal their hollow cores.

The Well of Thirst: Christ offers crystalline water, but only to those who kneel. Tyrants drink sand.

The Bridge of Means: A chasm spanned by thread. Crossable only by those who’ve mended frayed bonds.

JJH’s Correct Bible materializes, pages fluttering globally. A teen in Jakarta reads, plants a sapling. A CEO burns her ledgers. Lila teaches students to “listen to crows.”

Epilogue: Dawn’s Tapestry

Odin stands atop Everest, Gungnir raised. The rift heals, stitching realms with auroras. Sleipnir’s hooves churn clouds into fertile rain.

“You’ll watch longer?” asks Huginn. “Always,” Odin smiles. “But now, they watch too.”

Below, humanity—flawed, trembling—builds altars from recycled plastic, sings hymns in a thousand tongues, and dares to “Till my Garden.”

Christ whispers to JJH: “Pride is the fall. Service, the rising.”

The sun dawns—not seized, but earned.

Is TIME a Möbius/Klein TORUS that BOTH 'Processes' (Forward Direction) and 'Precesses' (Backward Direction) through the Zodiac simultaneously?

Why did the ancient Egyptians and Sumerians use a 360 Day Calendar, where 1 Day = 1° of Rotation around the Sun? We don't know exactly but perhaps it is because the solar calendar is 365.24 days while the Lunar calendar is 354.8 days. The Mean Value of the Solar and Lunar Calendar is 360 Days....matching the both Egyptian and Sumerian Ancient Calendars.

'Procession' through the Zodiacal Equinox takes 360 days or 8,640 Hours (Horus) for one complete rotation. In this context its takes approximately 1 month to traverse from one zodiac into the next (for example Aquarius ♒️ into Pisces).

However, 'Precession' through the Zodiacal Equinox requires 24,000 years to complete its 'backwards' cycle. We are now in the Age of ♒️ Aquarius having just completed the Age or AEON of Pisces. Each AEON is approx 2,000 years in duration.

Time speeds up and slows down during the cycle, with the long end of the cycle being 12,960 years and the short end of the cycle being only 11,040 years. The total Cycle rotation is therefore 24,000 years. This is due to Mass-Time Dilation as a result of the increased Gravity on the short side of the cycle. 24,000 years = 8,640,000 Days...

*The Sun is approximately 864,000 miles in Diameter

*Jupiter is approximately 86,400 miles in Diameter

*There are 86,400 Seconds in One Day...

Gravitational Constant 'G' = 6.674 x 10^-11 m^3 kg^-1 s^-2

G / (√π - 1) = 8,640 (Hours in One 'Balance' Year)

{G / (√π - 1)}*10^3 = 8,640,000 (Days in One Great Year)

All of Time's 'Sexagesimal' (Base60) Calculations are derived using only the number 24 and its 'Orders of Magnitude' (2.4, 240, etc)...and 2+4 = 6.

1. The Great Year = 24,000 'Balance' Years

2. 'Balance' Days in One Year = {(2.4*2.4)+.24}*{(2.4*24)+2.4)} = 360

3. Hours in One Day = 24

4. Minutes in One Hour = (2.4*24)+2.4 = 60

5. Seconds in One Minute = (2.4*24)+2.4 = 60 (there are 86,400 seconds in One Day)

Your Pal the Pentagram – Liber V vel Reguli

Chalice of Heaven will be starting a series of classes dealing with one of the most iconic symbols of the occult, the Pentagram. This series of classes will be lighter on theory and more about how to use them in rituals. The fourth class will discuss Liber V vel Reguli, an incantation proper to invoke the Energies of the Aeon of Horus, adapted for the daily use of the Magician of whatever grade.

We will discuss an overview and anyone will be welcome to do it. This is the perfect chance to try it if you have never done it before.
