Chapter One - First Impressions. Summary:

Reyes Vidal took one look at the Pathfinder waiting at the bar and realised he was in trouble.

So first chapter is out of my retelling of Aeryn Ryder and Reyes Vidal's romance. From their first meeting in Kralla's Song and beyond. snippet below-

He had to get The Pathfinder's attention and often the best way to break the ice was over a drink. He didn't see one in the Pathfinder's hand as he came in, so wasn't even sure she'd ever drunk from here, but he was about to find out if she could handle what Kralla's song offered. "You look like you're waiting for someone." The woman had already noticed him of course and looked at the drink he offered. He waited as she considered him carefully, her eyes dilating a little, then took the drink with an accepting clink against his glass. "I've got time for a drink" She drawled as she took the whisky and suddenly slammed it back just as hard as he did. Reyes stood for a moment in awe, not expecting a woman to appreciate the hard liquor, but then put on his best face for the introduction. Opening his arms wide, he turned on all the charm he could muster. "Shena, but you can call me Reyes. I hate codenames."

Gage Acquisitions helped @ladyofvoss through the Castrum, Praetorium, and Porta Decumana for her first run of ARR’s MSQ finale! Explained a few things, had a funny wipe on Gaius (this is what happens when you let Aeryn heal) and made sure Thalia got her first ever LB3 on Ultima Weapon.

I was tagged by @urrone, too so here’s a bit from a Dragon Age Shelterverse Inquisition era story I poke at now and again.  For background, Bethany went to the Inquisition as “Hawke” as Aeryn had just given birth and wasn’t travelling.  Cullen and Varric know, of course.  This bit is from Cullen’s POV

Hawke addressed Bethany without looking at her.  “A rift opened about two weeks after you left, just outside the city proper.  And another, last month, in the field outside the Retreat, about half a day’s journey from Starkhaven.  I’m here because of that.  It was insisted upon by the Council that the heirs be removed from immediate danger.”  Her eyes shifted from Cullen to Nyx.  “I thought to ask for your help, Inquisitor.  I understand you can actually seal the rifts.” 

“I can.  But I’m afraid Starkhaven is too far from the battlefront for us to venture out.”

I see.” She turned more fully towards Nyx and smiled an ambassador’s smile. “I must ask for an indulgence, then, Inquisitor.” 

“An indulgence?”

“I do not wish to take the children back to Starkhaven while the demons continue to trouble us and as I said, the Council asked me to remove them.  I believe it was intended for me to go to Denerim, but I request asylum for them and myself. For the duration.”

“Aeryn, where is Sebastian?”  Cullen could hear the worry in Bethany’s question.

“The Prince remains with his people, of course.”  Her voice wavered not at all, her face remained smooth.  Was it only Cullen’s imagination that her expression turned colder? 

Bethany’s sharp intake of breath said he was right but she changed tactics. “Aeryn, this is a battle encampment!”

One eyebrow arched, familiarly.  “With a mage tower.  And a pleasure garden.  And lovely, tall walls remote from most troubles.”  She tipped her chin and speared Nyx with a level gaze.  “And, rather more to the point, no rifts and near instant closure, should any appear?”

Nyx nodded, slowly.

“Then, Inquisitor.”  Hawke spread her hands and her tone was reasonable and courtly, “I have two infants and a young son who is heir presumptive to the pre-eminent grain fields of Thedas, responsible for feeding most of the Free Marches and half of Orlais.  We made the journey without major incident, but it is unlikely that we can make the return and sure we will meet demons on our arrival. I mean to make no announcement of our presence and, other than Ferelden, no other children of the monarchy are extant.  You won’t be inundated with hangers on.  I can even earn my keep.” Her smile turned icy, “Well, I can now.  I understand you’re pursuing a certain skill set.  Your Commander and your Left Hand are quite able to provide my references, I would think.  Lady Montilyet might also know my name.  Of old.”

“I have a teacher.  Of sorts.”

The smile turned sharp. “Yes, I have met Her.  Very capable.  Perhaps…a bit esoteric in her own applications, don’t you find her?”

Nyx repressed a shudder and Cullen had to swallow his smile. “Perhaps.”

“Yes.  Well, not all of us in the field pursue murder as an aesthetic.  Some of us just needed people dead, without a signature.  I’m happy to share my teachable skills as I have done with the scouts of Starkhaven and an apprentice or two.”

“Your teachable skills.”

“One or two tricks I employ are simply a matter of time and experience that you don’t have,” Hawke assured her.  “If you find you wish to pursue the profession, maybe that can be arranged as well.  But…and forgive me for assuming…becoming an assassin is not, I think, your pre-eminent goal?  It’s a useful addition to any rogue’s bag of tricks, a grand and precise set of skills.  But…again, I don’t think you mean to pursue it as a career, once the current troubles are behind us?”

“No, you’re correct.”

“And quite glad to hear it, my Lady Inquisitor.  I’ve also tutored under one of the great duelists of our era.” She paused at a familiar deep laugh covered by a cough in the background and her smile softened. “And I’m happy to share that with you as well.  I’m a solid pickpocket and safe cracker, even still, to round out my resume. Should you find yourself in need of such skills.” 

 Cullen could tell, Nyx was warming to the roguish Hawke. “You do seem a useful sort to have around.  Commander, Lady Montilyet?  Let’s send for Leliana and discuss this matter.  You’ll give us a moment, Lady Vael?”

Hawke’s smooth smile shifted. “You’ve been calling my sister Hawke, I take it?” 

Bethany shook herself out of her stupor. “Ah, no.  I asked the Inquisitor to use my first name.”

She grinned, “Then just call me Hawke, if you like.  No reason to be flashy, nor formal and it might throw interested listeners off the mark.”

Hey there, Aeryn! I was looking over your fiction writing and saw that you suggest to one writer that a break might be needed due to burnout, how long would you recommend? My personal question is when creating your characters do you write them separate from their in-game counterparts under a different name? Been wanting to play through the story but I struggle to do so as when an idea doesn’t work, the character suffers. Any advice?

Burn out is dependent on each person, and their current circumstances. Real life can have a tendency to cause issues there, and it's important to not beat one self up too much about things outside of control. Handle what can be controlled, what you can change and adjust, and when you start to feel like "Man I want to create something again/I wish I could create something again" that's probably the sign, actually, you're wanting to get back in the creative saddle.

And it's going to be rough and feel difficult and like everything sucks, but you gotta push through that. I fully acknowledge my writing in 2017 and 2018 is much rougher and tentative, as I was getting past some of my own burnout and getting back into the swing of regular writing.

I've seen it likened to opening a long-closed gate in a dam; gotta let the stagnant stuff out before things really start to flow again.

My personal question is when creating your characters do you write them separate from their in-game counterparts under a different name?

Currently my main OCs have their same names in game as in my stories. You can actually find Dark Autumn, Aeryn Striker, C'oretta Khell, and Iyna Cauld on Coeurl. I have alts cuz I started playing before NG+ was a thing, I was an old school RPer who likes making new OCs, and I simply cannot ever fantasia Dark Autumn. None of the "supporting cast" OCs have in game representation (just Anamnesis files).

I don't worry too much about how the characters are in game versus in story. I make some vaguely almost IC decisions or choices based on some things, but even with the same names, the in game characters are just avatars I use for visuals; this is actually why I play Dark through MSQ first, to get my own knee-jerk reactions out of the way. Only sometimes my avatar in game as I play informs the ideas I thought I had for the OCs I write about. When playing Aeryn specifically, I end up thinking about how Aeryn would feel and react, and am often surprised. And then consider: is it worth trying to keep the original idea, or is the new idea better?

Which is how I ended up with a wolnpc ship I never intended, or how I realized she had a jealous streak. I just let the avatar vibe and decided if I wanted that to affect my story ideas or not. And there's plenty I do do in game that has nothing to do with my story portrayals, or vice versa.

But also not all character ideas are going to work, or even need to, and letting a character idea grow and change as you learn who they are and what you really want/need for them is fine.

@driftward actually might have some good advice there too, as her initial ideas for Nyx, written in an earlier FFXIV Write, didn't end up working out. Nor did an earlier miqo'te character that was fantasia'd into the elezen we now know and love as Zoissette Vauban. The stories and character info were written...and then reworked.

Sometimes it takes awhile to figure out what we want and how we go about it. Retcon is not a dirty word. If a character idea isn't working, think on why, and what needs to step back and adjust.
