Build the Future with Steel: Durable, Affordable, and Sustainable Structures
In today's fast-paced world, the need for robust, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable building solutions has never been greater. Traditional construction methods often fall short in addressing these modern demands. Enter steel buildings and commercial barndominiums—innovative structures that are redefining the future of construction. These steel-based solutions are not only durable and affordable but also offer significant sustainability benefits, making them the ideal choice for forward-thinking builders and developers.
Tumblr media
The Durability of Steel Buildings
One of the most compelling reasons to opt for a steel building is its unparalleled durability. Steel is renowned for its strength and resilience, capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and heavy snow loads. Unlike traditional wooden structures, steel building are impervious to pests like termites and rodents, which can cause significant damage over time. This longevity ensures that steel buildings remain structurally sound and visually appealing for decades, providing excellent return on investment.
Steel's inherent fire-resistant properties further enhance its durability. Unlike wood, which can combust easily, steel does not ignite, making it a safer choice for commercial and residential structures alike. This fire resistance not only protects the building but also provides peace of mind to occupants and owners.
Affordability: Cost-Effective Construction
Cost is always a critical factor in construction projects. Steel buildings offer a more affordable alternative to traditional construction methods. The pre-engineered nature of steel structures allows for quicker assembly and erection, significantly reducing labor costs and construction time. Additionally, the precision engineering of steel components minimizes waste, ensuring that every piece fits perfectly and reducing the need for costly on-site modifications.
Moreover, the maintenance costs of steel buildings are substantially lower than those of traditional buildings. The durability and resistance to environmental factors mean that steel buildings require fewer repairs and replacements over their lifespan. This translates to long-term savings for property owners, making steel an economically viable choice for commercial and residential projects.
Sustainability: Building Green with Steel
Sustainability is a key consideration in modern construction, and steel buildings excel in this area. Steel is one of the most recyclable materials available, with the ability to be recycled multiple times without losing its structural integrity. This recyclability reduces the demand for new raw materials, thereby conserving natural resources and minimizing environmental impact.
In addition to its recyclability, steel production has become more energy-efficient over the years. Modern steel manufacturing processes utilize less energy and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional methods. This progress makes steel a more environmentally friendly building material, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints and combat climate change.
Furthermore, steel buildings can be designed to incorporate various energy-efficient features, such as insulation, energy-efficient windows, and solar panels. These features not only reduce the building's energy consumption but also lower utility costs for occupants. The combination of recyclability, energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact positions steel buildings as a leading choice for sustainable construction.
The Rise of Commercial Barndominiums
A notable trend within the realm of steel buildings is the rise of commercial barndominiums. Originally popular in rural areas as combined living and working spaces, barndominiums have evolved to meet the needs of commercial enterprises. These hybrid structures blend the rustic charm of traditional barns with the modern amenities required for business operations.
Commercial barndominium are versatile, offering flexible interior layouts that can be customized to suit various business needs. From office spaces and retail stores to restaurants and event venues, the adaptability of commercial barndominiums makes them an attractive option for entrepreneurs and developers. The open floor plans of these structures allow for easy reconfiguration, ensuring that businesses can adjust their space as their needs change over time.
The affordability of steel construction further enhances the appeal of commercial barndominiums. Lower initial construction costs and reduced maintenance expenses make these structures financially viable for businesses of all sizes. Additionally, the durability of steel ensures that commercial barndominiums can withstand the rigors of daily business operations, providing a reliable and long-lasting workspace.
Combining Aesthetics and Functionality
One of the misconceptions about steel buildings is that they lack aesthetic appeal. However, modern steel construction offers a wide range of design options, allowing architects and builders to create visually striking and functional structures. Steel buildings can be clad with various materials, such as wood, brick, or stone, to achieve the desired aesthetic while retaining the benefits of steel's strength and durability.
Commercial barndominiums, in particular, offer a unique blend of rustic and contemporary design elements. The use of natural materials and large open spaces creates an inviting and stylish environment that appeals to both business owners and customers. This combination of aesthetics and functionality sets steel buildings apart from traditional construction methods.
Conclusion: The Future is Steel
As the construction industry continues to evolve, the demand for durable, affordable, and sustainable building solutions will only increase. Steel buildings and commercial barndominiums represent the future of construction, offering unmatched benefits in terms of strength, cost-efficiency, and environmental impact. By choosing steel, builders and developers can create structures that not only meet the needs of today but also stand the test of time.
Whether you're looking to construct a new commercial space, expand your business, or invest in a versatile and sustainable building solution, steel buildings are the smart choice. Build the future with steel and experience the advantages of durable, affordable, and sustainable structures.

Shades of Green: Balancing Sustainability and Convenience
Architectural design is an art and technique that focuses on the needs and demands, to create a well-designed project, using the concept of space and design and especially creativity. As the proverb goes “Necessity is the mother of invention”; similarly, the requirements of a project decide how it is planned and designed.
The crux of any project is conceiving a solid concept, refining techniques, and skillfully maneuvering intricate tasks. But as creators in our field, it’s also our social and moral responsibility to design these structures considering their impacts on the environment. More and more people are now changing their ways and trying to be a part of this sustainable and green family. But what about the ones who are not?
Educating our clients on the pros of Green architecture and its impact on the future is the need of the hour. No, Green doesn’t mean you need to leave the city and start living in a mud house. It is far less challenging than it seems. Starting small goes a long way.
Tumblr media
Green Architecture/ Sustainable Architecture aims to mitigate the adverse impacts that built structures have on their surrounding environment. They are designed, constructed, and operated with a focus on conserving energy, sourcing eco-friendly or recycled materials, and preserving the biodiversity of the area. In a Country like India, where we have all the dominant seasons (summer, winter, monsoon), a building designed in such a way that it’s not 100% reliant on artificial lighting and ventilation can also be a step in that direction.
When we go back to the Traditional architectural styles of India, it had sloped and high roofs that would provide excellent insulation from heat and cold weather, mud brick walls or wooden panel walls– all natural materials that could breathe, along with multiple small windows ensuring cross-ventilation.
Tumblr media
Whereas in modern planning, very large openings like French windows can also lead to bringing in a significant amount of heat and increase the dependency on the use of air conditioning systems. Here, considering the directions of the sun while planning the location and size of the openings in the structure can help reduce the effects. One might also use windows with low e-glass or UV-protected films to minimize the harmful effects of the sun.
To Make A Sustainable Project, Try To Incorporate The Following Elements:
1. Increase the use of renewable energy like Solar energy by planning to install solar panels.
2. Plan Rainwater recharge pits. The underground water table is constantly going low with the concrete jungle that man has created. Make sure to add a recharge pit to your place.
3. Use and reuse of material, like recycling waste material. Plan re-use of grey water in gardening or toilets etc.
4. Make sure the project ensures efficient use of energy, water, space, and other resources.
5. Pollution generated by the structure should be kept in check from the beginning of the project, ensuring the use of natural and non-toxic materials.
6. Plan green spaces with oxygen-producing trees like Neem, Arjuna, Ashoka, etc.
7. The quality of indoor air is one of the key components, which can be achieved through a well-ventilated plan.
The challenge before us is to develop and promote the use of green architecture in the upcoming constructions. Ensure that the design is ergonomic as well as economical. No matter the scale of the project, atlas it comes down to whether it is within budget or not. To bring down the expenses, we need to develop more affordable alternatives, Implement new technology, make more eco-friendly designs, and promote maximum use of non-toxic sustainable materials.
For our industry to achieve success in this mission, we need to collaborate and come forward for the cause and work towards improving and introducing more effective programs like LEED, IGBC, and GRIHA. This is a step towards a better tomorrow so let’s work till we achieve it because as is quoted, “Where there is a will there’s a way”.

When Rome Burns : Part 1
TW : Logan Roy's A+ Parenting, Manipulative Logan
By @your-gay-cousin-clover
---
With a certain hint of trepidation, Tom starts dressing himself to meet up with Shiv in downtown New York. The plan was pretty simple for the day: meet up with Shiv, find a gift for her father, put on his best Midwest honourable fellow personality and charm the pants of all her family. He stopped for a moment in the middle of his bedroom, standing there in his white button up, boxers and black socks, biting his lip on whether to take the gold ring, he’d picked out a week ago, to the party. After all this time he had spent with her, ever since their whirlwind romance in Hong Kong, he was sure that she was the one for him. His soulmate, the-one-who-he-got, his loml. The question was of when?
The party would be a good place to propose. Lavish surroundings, her entire family, and a pretty pricey ring to show his commitment to her. All eggs in your basket, he’d say if- when she said yes. And it would all be fine and okay. He starts to daydream for a moment, his dreams flying higher than just becoming Logan Roy’s son-in-law, maybe he’d join in the business himself. He would swoop in, take over one of the main branches of Royco, maybe ATN and continue the family business until he had his own billionaire kids à la Shiv.
Beep! Beep!
His fantasies suddenly dashed down into the floor. He jerks and reaches to the phone on the table to receive the call. It’s Shiv.
“Hey honeybee,” he says in a sweet-syrupy tone that he hoped conveyed his affections accordingly.
“Where are you?”
He immediately frowns. Her tone is clipped sharp, a razor’s edge, threatening him to not speak a word off their usual script.
“I’m … ahh… just getting dressed. Oh, oh, how formal is the even supposed to be? Do you think I could sneak in a tartan tie pattern to impress your Dad?” He tries to detract from her irritation.
“The fuck, Tom? Don’t be silly. Just wear whatever you want, you’re not a pre-schooler. It’s a formal event, but don’t wear anything weird or embarrassing.” Her words just kick up a latent anger in him that he press down as per usual. It’s alright, maybe it’s her job that’s got her stressed.
He tries another jovial voice for a size. “Ok, love-,” he continues, but there’s no Shiv on the other side of the call. Just him and the dial tone mocking him.
Right.
Nothing weird or embarrassing.
He drops the ring into a drawer of his bedside table and shuts it close.
The day goes in its own pace and Shiv makes a hasty apology about her signal getting dropped in the elevator. He waves it off, he always goes. There’s no use holding on a grudge with his future-wife-to-be, on silly things like one too many passive aggressive words and brushed off endearments. And so, here he is now. Standing in the middle of an opulent penthouse living room, chatting pleasantries with Marcia, hands sweaty as he tightens his grasp on the gilded box with the watch.
It had been pretty expensive to purchase on his own. He and Shiv were comfortable, sure. But they - no, he wasn’t Olympus rich like the Roys, America’s number one conservative messiah. He hopes it’s enough. Enough for a job at ATN, enough for Shiv, above all, enough for Logan.
His fucking future hung on a balance because of a little ticking metal machine.
Ding!
There. The elevator’s number stuck still on their current floor and his breathing picks up. Everyone else collects around the door to waiting as the metal door open, but he stands back, alone. For a split second, he’s swallowed up in all the gold, gild and glamour around him and he simply can’t breathe.
He sticks out like a sore thumb in the middle of all this. No matter how brave, how much of a fucking asshole he pretends to be. He does not deserve to be here. He’s what? Got a few hundred thousand in his savings, while collectively in front of him stands the 3rd richest family in America. He just wants to bolt and never come back.
And in the same fleeting moment, the doubt hastily vaporises as Logan Roy himself steps into the view amidst loud yells of “Happy Birthday!”.
The moment he sees Logan, it’s something of oh, that echoes in his head. Like oh, he’s just an old man. And he indeed looks frazzled, startled by the sudden cheers. But he whispers something to Marcia, who takes his coat and hands it off to one of the numerous maids hurrying around the house.
And then he straightens up to face the crowd. There’s something in his eyes that makes Tom want to shrink back against the patterned wallpaper. Something fierce, something very calculating. He watches as Logan makes his way through the crowd of his children and nods absent-mindedly at everyone’s greetings.
“Shiv,” Logan says, turning to Shiv, his back to Tom “Where’s Wambsgans? I thought we invited him.”
Shiv’s expression falters for a second, perhaps debating whether her father’s joking or not. It’s clear, he’s not, when the beat of silence extends between them. She smiles back again, radiant. And gosh, Tom loves her so much.
“He’s behind you, Dad!”
Tom didn’t have much time to be mortified as Logan turned to him and stuck his hand out to shake. Awkwardly balancing his watch box on one hand, Tom tries to make grip firm and solid. Logan gives him two shakes and quickly removes his hand.
“Wambsgans, you’ve got a strong grip. Trying to break an old man’s hand, eh?”
Fuck. Of course, Logan Roy would be above all masculine handshaking bullshit that the Wall Street posers were really into. Logan knew he was the king of the world, didn’t need to prove it to any Tom-Dick-Harry on the street.
Logan’s already turning away from him, but Tom tries to swallow his foot down the throat trying not to make his first impression even worst. He lets out a laugh, but winces internally. Too braying, too harsh, too corny.
“Well, you’re not that weak, Mr Roy-“ He tries. He does. But Shiv already looks disappointed and Logan’s barely listening to him. His time to prove himself is running out.
Ding!
Everyone turns to look at the elevator again. Kendall Roy steps out the lift with his ex-wife and children in tow. He’s wearing that same black blue outfit combo, just like the one on Forbes, proudly declaring him as the HEIR WITH THE FLAIR. Tom has read Kendall’s entire wikipedia enough times to know that the stress marks and the lack of the photogenic smile was simply because of his age.
Drugs - Divorce - Demotion.
Yet like every American hero billionaire, Kendall got the second chance that could only be afforded to the rich and now, most probably, he was going to the Successor to the entire media conglomerate. Even then, Tom wouldn’t say that he exactly envies the other man.
“Ken!” Logan’s voice somehow sounds surprised as well as disappointed. “I didn’t think you’d come. Did we close the Vaulter deal?”
Kendall’s stance becomes a bit wooden as he reaches down to accept his father’s embrace. His ex turns to Marcia and hands off a wrapped box with a pleasant smile. The kids run off with Grace’s kid and Kendall stands there looking a bit unsettled as he answers “oh, no, no Dad. They’re still hammering out the details. I took a break to wish you on your birthday. Not sure how many more there might be.” The conversation mills a bit around the two, everyone leans in a bit to hear.
“You did?” Logan repeats with furrowed brows. “Well, where’s your cousin? I thought he’d rather come than you.”
Kendall looks taken aback for a moment. Everyone tries another round of conversation, but Tom simply nods along to other’s words as he tries to figure out information about the cousin. A cousin? Shiv’s never mentioned a cousin being involved in … well, anything.
“Greg?” Kendall asks, his voice uncertain. Logan looks him in the eye and shares a sardonic grin. “Yes, Greg. Unless Marianne happened to suddenly stop by. What’s he doing? Wasn’t he with you this morning?”
Kendall seems to shrink into himself under his father’s gaze. “Greg’s..” he starts and stops for a moment. “Greg’s with the team in the building. He wanted to finish the deal before joining the party.”
“Shame.” Logan says, “But good for him, as soon as we wrap up this deal the better. Anyway, kids, can I talk to you alone for a moment? I just want you to sign something.”
All of them exchange glances with each other, the meaning of which Tom is too novel to understand. All of them quietly follow in the steps of their father. The rest of them stare.
“So,” Marcia says, clapping her hands together. The sound echoes in the eerie silence devoid of birthday wishes. “Let’s get started on lunch shall we?”
On the way to the “game” which was highly requested in a cult-like chanting, Tom abruptly turns to Shiv and asks “I didn’t know you had cousin working at Waystar?”
She ceases typing on her phone and looks up with pinched brows, seemingly in thought. Tom watches the city go by in a blur from Shiv’s side of the window and waits. “
“Oh,” She says “You mean Greg? Yeah, he’s like my second cousin. Uncle Ewan’s only grandson, although I don’t think he’s seen them since he was ten? He’s chief strategist at Royco. You’ll see him soon enough when you join.”
A when, not an if. And immediately, Tom’s heart lifts. He fights a grin on his face and catches Shiv’s eye. She smiles a bit, the stress from her face falling away for a second and turns back to her phone.
All was well.
All was not well.
Tom kind of looks like an idiot. At least in his own head, he’s been lugging around the watch box the entire evening. Right now, he’s standing behind Logan and Shiv like an obedient puppy waiting for Shiv to call upon him. The rest of the family is setting up the baseball game while the groundskeepers looking on fascinated.
Tom pretty much feels like them.
“So, about Tom,” Shiv says and Logan seems to be considering her words. Tom’s ears pick up, his hands turn sweaty again and he fidgets with the box in his hands. He imagines he can hear the watch tick inside like a time bomb.
“Hmm…” Logan replies, peering out into the distance. Kendall’s already gone into the wind, about half-an-hour ago, his ear glued to the phone talking to “Greg”. Tom waits for that syllable to end and simply waits.
“What do you think about putting him under Greg?”
Despite the short distance between him and the duo, he hears an undercurrent of something sinister his way. Something almost amusingly cruel.
“Wh-why Greg? Isn’t that - like isn’t he already busy with the buyings and everything else? And surely you don’t expect Tom to be his assistant? He’s much more experienced in business.” Shiv’s protest add a bit of tension to his mind.
What was the deal with this Greg? It was almost as if he was some kind of a boogeyman to Shiv and her siblings. But someone that Logan clearly approved of, but there was something very odd about the whole missing cousin.
It was as if being put under the cousin would somehow be bad for him. Geez, was he some kind of a hardass?
“No, no. I’m sure Greg’s not to busy to welcome your boyfriend into the family business. He can help guide Tom and put him in a fitting department. Not to busy to help family.”
Tom expects Shiv to say something. To put off Logan’s plan and for a moment, she does. But instead, she stops and frowns.
A beat.
Tom takes it as his cue to step in with the box.
This better work.

My Name is Elizabeth Daven. No one of importance, My family has worked at the castle for many generations. My Mother is the Ladies Maid for the Queen and considered a friend. My Father works in stables where I learned to ride horse back. Me, I do work in the Gardens and help with laundry not the most glorifying work but it could always be worst. My favorite place to be is in the smaller court Garden just off of the ball rooms. As a small child i would hide in the Gardens and watch all the guests and amuse my self by grading their Extravagant outfits. Nolan use to sneak away from the party and join me. I guess I should start by saying Nolan is the Prince and Heir to the thrown.  When I was six the young princess Gwyneth was born. And that's all the children the king and queen would have.
Nolan was only a few years older then me so we often would play together as children. No one else was wiling to get their clothes dirty. There were always visiting Nobles from across the lands with young children trying to win Favor of the king and queen to arrange a marriage. They all had manners and fancy clothes and such. Sticking their noses up like  that they were better then the next one. It never bothered me though I just thought they looked funny.
As we got older we stopped playing and focus on our duties. soon we weren't even speaking. I started working under my mother when I was nine .I learned proper manners, how to read and who to get the gossip from in the Castle.  when I was 12 I wanted to learn about horses, what young girl doesn't. So I went to worked in the stables with my father where I learned what it felt to be free even if it was brief. but at sixteen I chose to work in the gardens. I missed playing in the dirt and watching things grow and seeing all the magnificent colors in nature.
I wake up before the sun rises to go for a ride on my fathers horse. The best place to greet the new day is a few miles down a trail  behind the stables used for exercising and training new foals. There you'll find a clearing covered in little periwinkles with a sheer drop off cliff and that’s where I rest and eat my breakfast. The morning air is crisp with a slight chill but that‘s a normal spring morning here in Bamarre. After spending about an hour there I head back to start another day.
After I dismount I brush down the horse and make my way down the path to my families small cottage, when the cottage comes Into view I notice there are palace guards leaving.I stop and hide behind a tree trying to hear their conservation. “Thanks for the tea Mrs Daven. I hope it all  fits!”  Whats that suppose to mean? the Guards head back to the Palace and I quietly make my way inside. I am greeted by my mother first.”Oh Lizzy finally your back! You just missed our guest.” she gives me a very tight hug, I feel like she might make my eyes pop out. “Mom, your smothering me.” she seems chipper this morning not that she isn't normally in a good mood, but there's an extra sparkle in her eyes and grace to her walk. She takes my hand in hers. “theres a package for you in your room dear, you should go take a look.” almost dreading the thought of what it could be I make my way up the small stair case to my room. it consist of a simple wood bed frame with white linen sheets tucked under straw, a wooden armoire my father made, a little table with a bowl for washing and a foggy mirror.  And only a small square window that faces east
Laying on my bed box are two boxes. One a large white box with a golden ribbon tied around it and into a bow and a smaller one on top of the other one. Laying on the bed beside the boxes is a letter with the royal seal.
Mom stands in the doorway with her hands in front of her like shes praying with a huge smile on her face, “Go on,open it!” as i look back to the boxes i feel a pit form  in my stomach and a feeling of unease. I decide to open the letter first.
  Wear This.
Don’t be late.
Nolan
Behind that parchment was an invitation, an announce card and a dance card for the  summer gala in a few weeks. Its the biggest ball the castle holds, even bigger the the Yule tide celebrations. Its also Nolan's birthday.
Mom is so excite shes begging me to read it aloud, instead I just hand it to her and sit on the bed. All I can hear is my heart is racing. She flips the page over “is that all he can say! He so simple minded” mom takes the announce card and begins filling it out for me. I look at the dance card and realize its already filled, and its only one name for every dance... Nolan. Servant don’t attend balls let alone dance with the prince, why would he invite me? I haven't spoken to him in ages. I turn to the boxes I open the little box first and pull out a pair of olive green slippers with golden embroidery and little beads, very expensive pair of shoes. Mom is already untying the ribbons on the other box and pulls out a gown same as the shoes, olive green with golden flowers, swirls and Perls sewn along the bottom of the dress fading up and also into the bodice.  I hold it against me as my mom lets out an elated squeal, she says the dress match my sandy brown hair, my sun tanned skin and my bright green eyes.
My mom is so excited she insist we go to the market next week and find some accessories. The day come for us to go to the market the queen has given my mother the afternoon off to take me to town. We head to the merchant stands to see what jewelry they have. At first the merchant was trying to sell us some mediocre pieces clearly not thinking we could afford anything nicer but we have been given a small allowance to spend. I pull out a silver coin and the ball invitation it on his table and tell him to stop his haggling games and show us something fit for the occasion. He looks at the coin but more then anything hes taken back by the invitation he bows and apologizes, he then goes back into his tent and comes returns with a small box full of necklaces and other small trinkets. Out of the box I found a ring with a large sun flower that matches the flowers on the gown, a string of Perls mom says she will braid into my hair and a detailed  golden brioche
The weeks come and go much faster then I want them too, I never even saw Nolan once since receiving the dress and shoes and here it is, day of the ball.

1. Next Stop, Vegas Please
“Gonna sell my car and go to Vegas, ‘cause somebody told me that’s where dreams would be”
My eyes were confused when I opened them due to the sun setting on my window plane. I lost track of time after so many hours flying but I knew we were arriving to Vegas. From the air, the city was unmistakable; you could distinguish  The Strip, it’s almost a 7 km stretch, known by its concentration of resort hotels and casinos. Honestly, that was the reason why I chose this city to do my internship, besides the fact that the Crime Lab was the best forensic scientific laboratory in the whole country, Sin City had everything; everything and anything you want to do, you can do in Las Vegas.
Tumblr media
The airplane landed a while after and when I set foot on the ground, I couldn’t help but smile even though I was terrified. Leaving my country to go to live to another one all by myself. ¿Was it one hell of a step? Yes, but a necessary one. I wanted to push myself because I needed proof of my inner power; if I could do this, there was nothing I couldn’t do. I worked and studied hard for four years, graduated with honors and got the scholarship. The scholarship covers part of my staying in the city during the nine months; pays half my rent and the car rental. The rest of my payroll was for me. Obviously, I wasn’t going to earn the same money as my coworkers, I had a scholarship contract but it was enough to live comfortably.
My college made the car rental for me, a red Opel Astra with manual transmission and Diesel fuel. I only knew how to drive with manual transmission, so I figured that’s why they rented that car. I adjusted the seating position, started the car and typed the address of the apartment. Dream Apartments was a complex with a clubhouse and a gym, besides the apartment of course. It took me 20 minutes but I got there with success. I parked the car in front of the complex, went to reception and after the registration, they gave me the key to my new home. I followed a tile path and saw a wooden door with a door sign; 898 SF, my apartment. I opened the door, climbed the stairs carrying my suitcase and as soon as I was upstairs, I was impressed by the elegance. The apartment walls were white, wooden floor and everything else was black; doors, frames, curtains, paintings.. I loved it. After the excitement, I realized that I didn’t sleep in the plane but I needed to start getting used to the night shift so I had to stay awake at least until 8 am, since the shift was from 11 pm to 7 am. So, ¿where shall I start? Let’s walk around the neighborhood.
Tumblr media
***
When I asked at reception where Gil Grissom’s office was I couldn’t believe it. I did not know what I expected, but his office wasn’t it. There was a metal desk in the middle of the room, which was normal but the rest of the office was full of shelves with glass jars that contained all kind of things you can imagine; a small pig fetus, spiders, frogs, snakes.. all of them dead, obviously but still, creepy.
If that wasn’t enough, he also had specimens of butterflies and bugs framed on the wall. When I was a child, I had a collection with various specimens of scorpions, spiders and beetles conserved in glass, but that was just for fun.
-¡Hi! –a voice spoke behind me, which made me jump from the scare, but he smiled afterwards- Sorry. Welcome to Forensics. Gil Grissom, I’m your supervisor on “Graveyard”.
-Laura Serrano –I introduced myself while shaking hands- ¿”Graveyard”?
-That’s how we call the night shift.
-¿Why? –I asked curiously.
-Because of the same reason you chose this shift –I wondered how did he know that, but he answered before I could even ask- ¿Do you remember what you wrote on the application?
-Actually, I do –I nodded- I wrote that I wanted to work the night shift because of the number of crimes that occur at this time. People are drawn by the allure of the darkness, and so am I.
-That quote is the reason why I accepted your internship –he confessed- You know Laura, this job requires someone who is not afraid to explore the darkest corners. CSI’s see everything and deal with the most twisted things you can imagine. It takes a strong mind to handle it, and I believe you have one.
-I agree and that’s why I can’t wait to be on the field.
-We’ll begin our shift when the team arrives, so while we are waiting.. ¿would you mind taking off your jacket and rolling up your sleeve? I need a pint of your blood. It’s mandatory for all new hires.
Tumblr media
A few minutes later, we left the office and headed to the locker room, where the CSI’s store their personal belongings, so I could leave my bag. As we were approaching, two male voices could be heard louder. From the way Grissom smiled, he recognized them. Two good looking guys were talking while putting on their shoes leaning on the bench. One of them was an African American with brown hair and green eyes and quite tall. The other was American with dark hair and brown eyes and a little bit shorter, although I have to admit that I fell for his smile. When he smiled, laugh lines appeared around his cheeks and eyes making him look cuter.
Tumblr media
-C’mon, give me a winner for tomorrow.
-Green Bay, minus seven and a half over Niners –answered the African American- Always go with the better quarterback.
-Warrick, Nick –Grissom called, making them look at him and me- I want to introduce you to Laura, she’s the girl who comes to do the internship.
-Nick Stokes –the cute one introduced himself.
-Warrick Brown –he shook my hand after Nick did- You’re from Spain, right?
-Yes, Barcelona –I nodded.
-Man, how I wish to be there.. –Nick mumbled- Great gastronomy, cool weather and views to the Mediterranean.
-¿You’ve been there? –I asked.
-Not yet, but I’m looking for a place for my next vacation –he answered- Now that I’m CSI Level 3 I can afford to travel further than Texas.
A brunette woman entered the locker room in a hurry and greeted everyone without noticing me. I guessed she was another member of the night shift. She was tall and skinny.
-Hey Sara, do you remember that the new girl started working today? –Grissom asked, but she didn’t even look.
-Yeah, ¿why? –she answered and looked for a moment, then she realized- Oh sorry, I’m Sara Sidle, nice to meet you.
-Don’t worry –I smiled- Nice to meet everyone.
-Not everyone.. –Grissom looked around- ¿Does anyone know where’s Catherine?
-She had to pick Lindsey up from her ex’s house, but she’s on her way –Warrick answered- It’s Lindsey’s birthday today.
-Wait for her outside, you’re working together and take Laura with you. 401A at Fremont Street –Grissom commanded as he gave me my CSI credential- Nick, Sara, you’re with me.
-¿What’s a 401A? –I asked Warrick while we were leaving the locker room.
-Hit and run.
I put the credential around my neck and followed him to the exit of the building. When we arrived outside, I saw a skinny, blonde woman approaching us with a weary look on his face.
-Hey guys.. –she said- You must be Laura, the new girl.
-That’s right –I smiled to make her feel comfortable- You must be Catherine.
-Nice to meet you, Laura. Sorry for being late –she looked at Warrick- ¿Are we working together?
-Yeah, hit and run on Fremont –he showed the keys that belonged to one of the cars the CSI’s use to do their job- I’m driving.
***
When we arrived at the crime scene it was already cordoned off. Warrick parked a couple of meters away from the police tape and then we got out of the car. The first thing I saw was the victim; a little girl. I didn’t expect that since it was night and kids don’t go alone on the street. Besides, it was a little girl. ¿Who is capable of leaving her there without calling the police? Cowards.
-¿You okay? –I heard a male voice asking that, and then I realized I stopped walking the moment I saw the girl.
-Yeah, yeah.. It’s just that.. –I tried to find the words to say ignoring that they were both looking at me.
-It’s hard –Catherine finished- I wish I could say it gets easier, but I’m not a liar. The only thing you can do is find whoever did this and get justice.
-Then I’m lucky.. Because that’s exactly our job -I looked at them and sighed- ¿Hoy many hit and runs have you had this year?
-Too many –Warrick replied as he bent down to look at the ground- One thing I can’t stand is a punk coward.
-My daughter wants one of these scooters –Catherine indicated with the flashlight- She says that she’s the only kid in the world who doesn’t have one.
My gaze went back to the little girl’s body but it was something I couldn’t control. I couldn’t concentrate on anything else but her. She had a scared look on her face. My heart shrunk from the sadness of her accident. She was so young and full of life and it only took a couple of seconds to take that away.
-¿Do you want me to tell Grissom to put you in another case? -No –I answered- ¿Why?
-¿You feeling alright Warrick? –Catherine asked in a worried tone- ¿It’s that thing with Holly Gribbs, isn’t it?
-I’m just looking out for my partners, you know.. –Warrick replied with a frown- It made me think who I am to you.
-Hey relax –she smiled at him and then looked at me- I’m sure Laura can handle this one.
-I can –I nodded- I’m okay, but thank you for the offer.
-So, Laura the first thing we do is take a close look at the crime scene and then we take pictures of everything that could be evidence–Catherine explained- In this case, for example, the scooter, the victim’s shoe, the tire marks.. Then we try to recreate what happened with the evidence we’ve got so far. Warrick, ¿you wanna call it?
Tumblr media
-Vehicle’s coming down from Rochester, victim was on her scooter heading east, car breaks here, impact here and the vic was thrown.. ¿What? ¿20 meters? –he explained while indicating everything with his fingers.
-And all we’ve got is some paint that’s going to match up to about 20 million other vehicles.. –Catherine sighed- Bastard.
***
I saw them collect the evidence from the crime scene and the next step was get it back to the lab while the coroner performed the victim’s autopsy. Luckily, she was the only dead body that night so it wouldn’t take long. Warrick took the evidence to the rightful departments.
-¿Have you had the chance to walk around the Lab?
-Actually, no.
-I’ll show you around while we wait for the autopsy then –Catherine said and started walking- First we have the DNA Lab, territory owned by Greg Sanders, lab tech specialized in DNA and also in listening commonly rock artists while running lab machines. You’ll meet him, you’ll like him.
-Rock is my favorite genre so I already like him.
-Next to DNA we have Ballistics and in front Audio/Video –we continued walking- We have Trace and Fingerprints over here and down the hall to the right we have the Evidence Garage next to the Evidence Vault and to the left the Locker room, Grissom’s office, the Break Room and the Layout Room.
-¿Layout Room?
-We use that room to review evidence and look for new evidence, compare notes, display the photos from the current case and use the table to draw out rough sketches on maps –she answered with a good explanation- ¿Any more questions? -I have one but it’s not about the Lab.. –she looked at me waiting for me to ask- ¿Who’s Holly Gribbs?
-She was a rookie who started working with us two weeks ago. Holly and Warrick were working together on a case but he left and when Holly was alone collecting evidence from the crime scene, the suspect came back and shot her –Catherine explained it regretfully- She died on the operating table.
-Warrick feels guilty., -I concluded- That’s why he asked me if I wanted to work another case, to make sure I’m okay.
After I finished my sentence, Catherine’s phone rang. It was time for us to head to the morgue, which was downstairs. Before entering the morgue itself, we stopped on the hall to put on the sterile lab coat.
-¿Have you ever seen a dead body?
-Yeah, I took human anatomy classes –I nodded- I wanted to be ready.
-Good –she smiled proudly- Usually, the night shift coroner is Dr. Albert Robbins, but today is his day off so you are going to meet Dr. Jenna Williams.
We entered the morgue and approached the central table while making introductions.
-This is your hit and run victim –the coroner uncovered the girl and looked at me- Bad thing about this job is you stop asking yourself why. The cause of death was the hit by the car, but I’ve found a bruise on her leg.
-Oh my god.. plate numbers, from the license plate when impacted her skin.
-Looks like a 4.. –I looked at the bruise trying to decipher the license plate- ¿And a J?
Tumblr media
-Yeah –Catherine agreed- We have to call DMV.
-¿DMV? –I asked.
-Department of Motor Vehicles, we’ll get them to cross check this partial plate in a 5 mile radius.
***
Actually, waiting for an answer from DMV didn’t take as long as I expected. Within the hour we already appeared at the door of the car owner’s house. This was my first time face to face with a suspect and as my first night was full of unexpected things, an older man opened the door.
Tumblr media
-¿Hello? –Catherine said with a smile- ¿Mr. Charles Moore? We are with the Las Vegas Crime Lab. We’d like to talk to you about your car.
-We believe it may have been involved in a traffic collision earlier this evening.
-I told the police when they called me.. my car was stolen.
-That’s why we have a search warrant, sir –Catherine gave him the paper- So that we can look in your garage.
When he opened the garage door with that face I already knew we were going to find his car in there and in what condition. From the sad attitude he had, he knew what happened. The front of the car was busted and the license plate hung from its place. We looked at each other, and then we looked at him. We were waiting for an explanation.
Tumblr media
-It.. it was an accident.. I saw the girl and I tried to break but I accelerated by mistake. I got confused.. I shouldn’t have left. I was wrong. ¿Is she okay?
-She died at the scene –Catherine said without being affected by the man’s repentance.
-You are going to be charged with manslaughter, Mr. Moore –Warrick added- Felony and run. You have a lawyer?
He didn’t answer, but he looked like he was sad and sorry to hear what happened. Obviously, killing the girl wasn’t his intention, but he had to face it. After finding the car, we had to make sure it was the correct car and we needed evidence so we called Traffic to have the car confiscated and brought in. While we waited, we went to the break room to eat and drink something.
-¿Is it me or did he give it up so easy? –Catherine asked us as she was taking out a cake from the fridge.
-Old guy was scared –Warrick answered with a soda on his hand- ¿What do you think, Laura?
-I also think that he was scared, I mean he almost cried when he heard the girl died but I feel like there’s something more.
-¡You have to see the birthday present I got for your daughter! –Grissom entered the break room while carrying a bag- I had one of this Chem Labs when I was six, I almost blew up the whole house.
Tumblr media
-¿What’s the rule.. how long do I have to be here before kicking in for gifts? –I asked with confidence.
-When your spirit moves you –Catherine answered with a smile- But don’t worry because Lindsey doesn’t want a party.
-¿What kind of kid doesn’t want a party? –Sara asked.
-My kid.
-Hey Catherine.. ¿at what time is your little girl coming by? –Nick entered the room with a gift- I got her a Chemset.
Grissom and Nick exchanged surprised looks. They had bought the same gift.
-Keep it –Sara intervened- You might learn something.
-Stop flirting with me –Nick ignored her- Cath, really, ¿when’s the party?
-¿What do I have to do? –Catherine got up from the chair a little bit upset- ¡There is no party! ¡My daughter doesn’t want a party! ¿Is everybody clear on that?
No one was going to answer after that. Crystal clear.
***
-¿How tall do you think Mr. Moore is? –Warrick asked us leaning on the car.
-Six feet, I’d say –Catherine answered after we exchanged a look.
-Old people must love hugging the steering wheel ‘cause this sit is pushed all the way forward –Warrick opened the door and got into the car. He didn’t quite fit- I’m six feet and this mirror isn’t helping me at all.
-¿Can you start the car? –I asked.
-¿Why?
-If you haven’t noticed I’m 5 feet and when I drive I have to push the sit all the way forward.
-You think that it wasn’t Mr. Moore who was driving but someone shorter.
As soon as he started the car, the radio turned on and a rap song started playing. Warrick whistled impressed by the song and started moving his head to the beat of the song. In my case, I knew the song and started rapping it.
-So they can hear everything that you say when you ain’t home. I guess Michael Jackson was right, “You are not alone”. Rock your hardhat black..
-¿You listen to Mos Def? -Warrick asked impressed.
-I thought you said Rock is your favorite genre –Catherine intervened.
-¡And it is! But I listen to everything and when it comes to rap Mos Def, 2Pac, Nas, The Notorious B.I.G, Eminem, Blackstreet.. are some of my favorites.
-¡I like your style! –Warrick smiled at me.
-Mr. Moore was not the last person to drive this car –Catherine was the only one who wasn’t absorbed by the song- ¿Turn the music off?
Now it was time to find the evidence that would sustain our theory. Since it was my first day, I limited myself to observe how they did the search and collection of evidence. The steering wheel cover was leather but it had small breathable circles and there was something stuck in one of them. Catherine took it with the tweezers and showed it to us.
Tumblr media
-¿Can you tell what that is?
-¿Is it me or that is a piece of tooth? –I questioned.
***
After collecting the evidence and come to a conclusion, came the part of the confrontation with the suspect. I wanted to see how my colleagues faced the situation in the interrogation room. I had no experience, so I couldn’t enter just like that. Instead, I watched it all from the observation mirror.
-¿Does anybody else drive your car, Mr. Moore? –Warrick started.
-I was driving yesterday.
-Sir, that doesn’t answer our question.
Suddenly, the door opened and a boy about 19 years old entered the room. It was the suspect’s grandson. The boy seemed lost, but the grandfather more.
Tumblr media
-¿What is he doing here? –Mr. Moore asked.
-Your grandson is an approved driver on your insurance –Catherine explained- He had him pulled out of school
-So James, ¿you like Mos Def?
He sat down without saying a word.
-¿Did you hit that girl with your grandfather’s car?
-Pops, let me explain to them –the boy said addressing his grandfather- They should hear what happened.
-No, they are going to from me –he nervously clasped his hands together and began to explain- When I hit that girl, James switched seats and took over the wheel, drive me home. He was worried about me, not the girl. I’m not saying good judgment was used, but that’s what happened.
-James, ¿do you want to add anything to that? –Warrick asked, but since the boy didn’t say anything, he continued- Sir, ¿can we look at your teeth?
Mr. Moore took out his dentures and put them on the table.
-James, we found a tooth chip embedded in the steering wheel of your grandfather’s car –Catherine explained again- It doesn’t appear to be of your grandfather’s teeth. ¿Do you have a chipped tooth?
-Pops, I’m sorry but I got to –he was going to tell the truth.
-He is a good boy.. it was an accident. I make him call, let me know where he is. He drove straight home and wanted me to go to the police station with him.
-I didn’t know that little girl was dead. I swear.
-I wouldn’t let him turn himself in, that was my decision –he appealed to our emotions for his grandson- Boy’s going places, college.. he’s got a real future.
-I’m very sorry, Mr. Moore –Catherine mumbled with a sad tone- James, I’m afraid you are gonna have to be taken into custody.
-Miss, please.. –he begged- I’m willing to serve his time.
-I know you are Mr. Moore but we can’t let you do that.
Two police officers entered the room and handcuffed the boy. Taking him by the arms, they left the room and went to reception, where he was going to say goodbye to his grandfather. When Warrick and Catherine left the interrogation room, I joined them. There was a feeling of sadness between us.
-Hey, ¿why don’t you go home? We can handle this –Warrick said to Catherine- Your daughter gets out of school in a half hour on her birthday.
-I owe you –she smiled at him, and then look at me- See you tonight, guys.
Warrick and I exchanged glances and approached them.
-Don’t worry pops, I’ll be okay.
-My grandson going to jail is never okay. You survive in there, ¿you hear me?
-You too –James nodded- Don’t be going downhill.
They hugged each other for the last time with tears in their eyes and honestly, they were not the only ones who had them.
-James, the first days are going to be the toughest –Warrick took his hand and wrote something on it- Here’s my cell number. If you are in any problems, call me. I’ll be right there. Keep your head up.
Tumblr media
James was taken away and his grandfather left too. We both stood there, watching them go. Watching how they were forced to separate.
-That has been very good of you –I said touched by his act of kindness.
-They remind me of me and my grandmother –Warrick confessed- ¿How do you feel after the first case? This has been a pretty tough emotional one. You have seen two very hard emotions; tragedy and sacrifice.
-Thanks to them I have realized something –I nodded- You’ve got so much power in this job, which you use to get the bad guys but once in a while, I’d like to use it to help the good guys.
-¿And what.. forget about little Renda Harris?
-No.. –I looked at him- What I’m saying is that putting James away isn’t gonna bring her back and Mr. Moore was willing to do the time. I mean, the victim’s family gets closure..
-I know.. but we got to follow the evidence, even if we don’t like where it takes us –Warrick turned to face me- Laura, it’s the job. If you start making deals with the devil, you don’t get to walk away. ¿You understand what I’m saying?
-Yeah..
-Now it’s time to go home –he said watching reception’s clock- You did very well on your first day. Get some rest, ¿okay?
I went back to the locker room to collect my things and when I left the building, I got in the car and just sat there. I had waited so long for my first case and to feel that high when I’d solve it, but I didn’t feel that way. Not at all. Instead, I felt guilty and this had only just begun.

The Investment
(~2000 words)(Jarlaxle, Artemis Enteri, background drow)(tw racism, xenophobia, drow-typical sexism, needle mention, torture mention.)
Jarlaxle hadn’t managed to survive so long and build the Underdarks most notorious mercenary organisation by allowing preventable social problems to grow underfoot. He had long ago realised that the High Priestesses didn’t want drow to cooperate. Particularly not the men. Cooperation led to the construction of social units beyond the family, led to power and influence that they couldn’t directly control.
Artemis and his men were not getting along.
That was to be expected. In a way he had put a great burden on his poor abbil, to show his drow how an unbroken human behaved and acted, that he was their match in many ways. To have them learn to doubt. If humans weren’t necessarily so weak and inferior, what else in their world was worth questioning?
But unfortunately, such change took time. Not everyone was quite as adaptable as Jarlaxle was, as he had had to be. Change felt like chaos and so they resisted it. So much of drow society and philosophy rested on the concept of solidity and tradition. Indeed, hadn’t they been thrown out of the feywild because they’d demanded a measure of continuity and stability from Corellon? Hadn’t they had to carve themselves a place in this world instead? Yes indeed, drow had never had anything, had never been given anything aside from what they could take for themselves by force. If they allowed chaos to fester, if they allowed change and the instability that came with it, they would be destroyed.
Jarlaxle had sat through such sermons often, listened to young priestesses preaching to passersby in the low city. He wondered about it in idle moments. All good lies had truth in them. Just how much and just what parts, now, that was the whole trick of it.
Let them have their tricks, for he had his own. Men didn’t run houses, except that the Bregan D’aerthe were basically a house and everyone knew it. Folk stepping outside their role in society would be struck down, except that he hadn’t been yet. Drow didn’t work with lesser races, except now Artemis was here and the match of half his men.
Change took time. Time ought to be the one thing an elf had in abundance, but that didn’t hold true for drow and especially not for him. Change was painful, particularly for those who brought it. Including Artemis, who didn’t seem to realise quite how much of a marvel he was down here. Who would probably stab him on the spot if Jarlaxle suggested that he was an ambassador for the betterment of all mankind.
And so he was delighted to see his office door had been tampered with. Very subtle work, too. Artemis had broken in and taken the earring. Wonderful!
He set his hat on the back of his chair and settled down into his chair, stretching out his back with a satisfying pop. The day had been tiresome indeed. Payment negotiations were tedious and House Matrons were very inclined to try and shortchange him. He had been sure to make friends with the lower men of the house, and one of them was close with the daughter-treasurer. The house had the money. They didn’t always pay willingly, but they did pay. Eventually. Not the clients he would have chosen, but work had been slow of late.
That led to trouble. Many of his men held other jobs- couriers, bodyguards, entertainers and consorts- and he had bade his battlemasters hold extra training sessions. But even with that the Bregan D’aerthe had an excess of free time on their hands. That was always dangerous. His men made their own entertainment and so many of them were stunted by their upbringing. A drow, frustrated and bored, would take out their annoyance on whomever they perceived to be lower than them. It caused issues with social cohesion, wearing away the tentative bonds forming amongst his men. It lead to splinter groups and rival mercenary factions. He would not have it, not when he had worked so hard to bring near every sellsword in the Underdark under his control.
And poor Artemis, well. Drow society marinated its citizens in superiority and xenophobia. They couldn’t conceive of a human amongst them that wasn’t a slave. Never mind one that outstripped them in many areas, one that Jarlaxle valued as much as he did anyone else.
And so it had become a common and mean-spirited game to needle Artemis, speaking around him in rapid-fire undercommon that he couldn’t quite understand, throwing stones and darts into whatever little crevice he slept in, poking fun at the size and shape of his ears.
Little cruelties that built into something dangerous. Last week, a group of five had decided to flush him out of his usual haunts, the abandoned rooms and quiet corridors. It had taken them half a day, but by sheer force of numbers they had succeeded in bullying him out into the main thoroughfares and cornering him in a side room. Jarlaxle wasn’t quite sure what they had ultimately intended. It would mean very little to them, to decide to kill some upstart human. Alternately, they might well have decided that frightening him was enough.
What they had intended didn’t matter. Finding himself backed into a corner and outnumbered, Artemis had killed three of them and taken two very dangerous injuries. Only the intervention of some older mercenaries, irritated by the noise, had prevented things taking an even more lethal turn. The onlooking crowd had considered this great amusement by all accounts, taking bets on who they thought likely to win.
Artemis had promptly caused great financial loss for many of them by hunting down one of his tormenters and killing him in the tunnels. The fifth bully, being semi-sensible, had taken a reconnaissance mission to the surface that would render him unreachable for several months.
His men had killed each other before. Of course they had. But over time, over hard won experience he found the bulk of such deaths to be preventable. But he preferred to reduce the chances. Much as Artemis was an interesting whittling mechanism for the stupid amongst them, it seemed a time-consuming strategy and a waste of a valuable asset.
And it wore a person down, to be considered so low and worthless despite all their skill and all their cleverness. Artemis didnt care what folk thought of him- he couldnt afford to- but been surrounded by constant dismissal...well. Jarlaxle remembered it. Remembered being an amusement at best.
Thus he had presented Artemis with a darksight earring, framing it as a strict investment on his own part. Artemis was already skilled enough in surveillance and stealth to match and even outstrip some of the drow. An aid to allow him to see as they did was the next logical step. Why have one of his better operatives run around half blind?
Better yet, it would stop a repeat incindent. Artemis had already killed those who irritated him. Now that he could see them coming and had proved himself almost drow-like in his ferocity, all but the most hostile conservatives would be disinclined to actively attack him. After all, that greater shame than to be killed by a human?
Artemis had refused point blank to take it. Much as Jarlaxle had expected. Rewards and gifts were all too often vectors of control and obligation. And so the box and its contents had remained on carved edge of Jarlaxle’s ironwood bureau, small and dark and velvet, while Artemis decided what to do. All of it took time, time where Jarlaxle bustled around the undercity and sent out his more socially inclined underlings in search of work. He had no intention whatsoever of allowing these violent delights to grow entirely out of his control.
And why not invest in a new lock in the meantime? Something large and ominous and magically warded. Something that looked like a headache to break. Something that looked like a challenge. Jarlaxle himself, had he been confronted with such a thing, would have deemed lockpicking a waste of time and gone in through the nearest window.
But Artemis was clearly pining for an opportunity to challenge himself, perhaps remind himself that the drow were wrong about him. He had spent the last ten days studying the new lock from a distance, sitting proudly on the fungalwood door into his office. Fungalwood doors could be charmed to swallow up the lock if they sensed an intruder trying to pick their way in. Drow didn’t tend to have wooden furnishings. Trees were rare in the darkness. Only the blood orchards bore any kind of wood at all, and all of that tended to stain a nasty shade of brown over time. Instead they grew their furniture from larger, more solid variations of the very same mushrooms that made up their everyday diet.
Artemis was clearly very light of touch, for the edge of his desk was completely empty. He considered returning the lock to its creator, telling her that an untrained human had broken through in under five hours. The thought of her expression made him grin.
Quick footsteps in the hallway outside had him palming a dagger, but it was only Scrap that appeared in his doorway. A young courier with long white hair twisted into a braid, a group of Jarlaxle’s street runners had discovered him half-dead in the gutters of the lower city and immediately dragged him back to Jarlaxle, proud of their find. Jarlaxle suspected the commoner had been grabbed off the streets by some noble house, to teach their young the finer arts of torture. He hadn’t spoken aloud since his recovery and communicated entirely in handspeak.
“Artemis is bleeding.” He was one of the few to refer to the human by name. “He did something to his ear with a needle and an icecube.”
Overworlders had a haphazard approach to many things, including piercings. The icecube was a traditional method from what Jarlaxle understood, though his ears ached at the thought. He had been most careful with his earrings, so as not to lose any sensitivity.
“Come, tell me where your message-running brings you. Any hint of dueling matrons or a nice house war?” Message runners knew more about the politics of the underdark than folk tended to realise. And Jarlaxle could discern much from where messages went and how many there were and the various wards and runes placed upon them.
“But the human. Won’t he die?”
Oh, that old nonsense. It was taught to young drow that overworlders were so weak a single scratch would kill them. Which wasn’t strictly a lie, if the blade was poisoned. In all lies linger the truth.
“Don’t you worry about our human consultant, he’ll be up and about in no time.” He plucked a bottle of mushroom wine from under his desk. A passive-aggressive gift from a priestess who knew he hated the stuff. “Drink?”
Artemis took full advantage of his new skill in the following weeks, testing it against the utter darkness that prevailed in the upper reaches of the fortress and squinting down into the clawrift. Indeed it became a brief and much more light hearted game to try and sneak up on him out of the darkness, only to be spotted and cursed at. A human that could see like a drow! What fun.
“Artemis, darling. Please don’t teach my men to swear.”
And he couldn’t deny that he had been looking forwards to this moment just a little, as Artemis turned to scowl at him. Colour looked very different in darksight, and so did drow. Drow women tended towards complete inky darkness, pure and clear in its depth of colour. But the men often had a subtle sheen to them of midnight blue or deep indigo or a rich green. And Jarlaxle was lucky enough to show all three, purple highlights across his shoulders and collarbones, blue on his chest and stomach, green on his hands and legs.
Artemis had never quite seen him like this before, which was surely why he stared.
“You look like a magpie.”
“A magpie?” Whatever that was, it had to be a handsome creature indeed.
“A flashy bird that steals anything shiny and makes all manner of noise.”
“Why, they sound quite marvelous! Now, I have a fine little rescue mission here, two houses scrapping kidnapping one another’s family members for ransom...”

The Role of Timber Conservation Windows in Sustainable Architecture ?
Tumblr media
Timber conservation windows are becoming a hallmark of sustainable architecture, offering a blend of classic aesthetics and eco-friendly functionality. As the demand for environmentally conscious building practices grows, these windows play a crucial role in preserving the charm of historic structures while contributing to sustainable design. Here’s a closer look at their significance in modern construction.
1. Classic Design with Modern Sustainability: Timber conservation windows beautifully marry classic design with modern sustainability. Crafted from high-quality wood, these windows maintain the architectural authenticity of historic buildings while meeting contemporary environmental standards.
2. Affordability and Accessibility: Architects and homeowners seeking affordable and accessible options for conservation windows find timber to be a versatile and cost-effective material. The affordability of timber conservation windows makes sustainable choices within reach for a broader audience.
3. Natural Insulation Properties: Timber inherently possesses excellent insulation properties, contributing to energy efficiency in buildings. Conservation windows made from timber help regulate indoor temperatures, reducing the reliance on heating and cooling systems. This natural insulation aids in energy conservation and cost savings.
4. Softwood and Hardwood Options: Timber conservation windows offer a choice between softwood and hardwood options. Softwood, such as pine, is popular for its affordability and versatility. Hardwood, like oak or mahogany, adds a touch of luxury and durability. The availability of these options allows for customization based on specific aesthetic and functional requirements.
5. Longevity and Durability: Timber, when properly treated and maintained, exhibits impressive longevity and durability. Conservation windows made from quality timber can withstand the test of time, ensuring that the architectural heritage of a building remains intact for generations.
6. Versatility in Design: Timber conservation windows provide architects and designers with versatility in design. Whether replicating historic window styles or creating contemporary adaptations, timber allows for intricate detailing and customization, adding character to the building façade.
7. Environmental Conservation: Opting for timber conservation windows aligns with broader environmental conservation goals. Timber is a renewable resource, and responsible forestry practices contribute to the overall health of ecosystems. Choosing timber over less sustainable materials supports forest management initiatives and reduces the carbon footprint of construction projects.
8. Conservation of Cultural Heritage: Timber conservation windows play a vital role in preserving the cultural heritage of buildings. Whether restoring a historic property or incorporating conservation windows into new designs, timber allows for a seamless blend of tradition and innovation.
In conclusion, timber conservation windows stand as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of architectural heritage and sustainable practices. By choosing timber, architects and homeowners make a conscious decision to embrace eco-friendly solutions without compromising on design, affordability, or performance.

The Good School, ch. 1
Title: The Good School // AKA the Good Place High School AU no one asked for Chapter: 1 Summary: Eleanor Shellstrop has been plucked from her ordinary life in Phoenix, Arizona, to attend prestigious boarding school, Iverson Academy for the Gifted, thanks to her intelligence, social activism, and passion for the performing arts. Except for one thing: they’ve got the wrong forking girl. Pairings: Chidi x Eleanor
There were only three things on Eleanor’s mind: her headband was itchy, it dug into her scalp, and it was the actual worst. It was a required part of her new school uniform, since the dress code explicitly stated that all hair must be held firmly in place. What kind of rule was that? Hair must be held firmly in place? Please. The racial undertones were not lost on her.
The secretary, whose name Eleanor hadn’t bothered to remember, called from her desk with a sticky-sweet smile, “Miss Shellstrop? The headmaster will see you now.”
As she stood from the ancient chair she’d gotten comfortable in, a tall, white-haired man popped his head out of his office and smiled. Everyone loves smiling here. “Eleanor Shellstrop? It’s so wonderful to meet you.”
“Yes,” she said, shaking his hand, “it’s great to meet you too, Mr—“
“All students are welcome to call me Michael.”
“That’s…progressive of you,” she replied.
He ushered her inside his office and handed her a small water bottle and an individually-packaged sugar cookie covered in blue and gold icing — the school’s colors. “I like to encourage an open and transparent environment here amongst student and faculty. I’m sure you and your parents read through the brochure before your arrival, and I must say, I’m surprised and disappointed they weren’t able to come see you off.”
“That makes one of us,” she mumbled.
If he heard her, Michael made no comment and continued on with his spiel. “All of the main housing and academic policies will be gone over at orientation in just a few minutes, I’ll even walk you there myself. But I just wanted to review your file with you, especially because it’s so rare that we even accept students so close to the start of the school year.”
“Thank you for allowing an exception,” she interjected.
“Nonsense, Miss Shellstrop,” Michael said as he opened a folder marked with her name. “You are an exceptional student and it would have been my biggest failure had I not successfully championed your application with the rest of the school board. You had a 3.9 unweighted GPA transferring in, volunteered with your local city government, and your passion for the performing arts made you an incredible candidate and a shoo-in for our program here at Iverson Academy for the Gifted.”
“Iverson Academy for the Gifted,” she repeated, “Cool.”
“Enough about your accomplishments, I’m sure you’ve heard praise all your life, so why don’t I walk us over to the first day orientation and I can start selling Iverson to you?”
They stood together and Eleanor tugged on her sky blue plaid skirt, just one more thing about the whole situation that made her deeply uncomfortable. Michael guided her down the hallways, which were decorated with various portraits of presumably past headmasters and founding figureheads. She mused, “A lot of old white men roamed these halls.”
“Iverson Academy was once an exclusive boarding school for privileged sons of wealthy families,” Michael replied, “it’s a bit of a sore spot, understandably, but in 1975, we opened our doors to everyone.”
To everyone who could afford it. He continued, “Of course, the price tag is still hefty, but several of our alumni are kind and generous enough to help fund scholarships for those who wouldn’t get the chance to be here because of a silly thing like that. Like you.”
They arrived at a pair of huge wooden doors that looked important to Eleanor. “One question: how did you find me in my little podunk part of Phoenix?”
“Paradise Valley is only thirty minutes away,,” Michael reminded her, chuckling at her description. “At the end of every year, the school board will appoint a search committee tasked with finding students that exceed the expectations of their surroundings. Normally, I wouldn’t boast, but I was the one who found your records at Thunderbird High School.”
She didn’t know what to say. “T-thank you.”
“Nonsense, Miss Shellstrop. It is my pleasure to provide you with the opportunities you deserve. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find you until your senior, but you’re here now.” Michael pushed the door open to reveal a grand hall, filled with students in matching uniforms, all buzzing with excitement for the new school year. “It’s time for orientation.”
It took all her strength and willpower not to roll her eyes or comment about how ridiculous it was for students in uniforms to be as cheery as they seemed to be. Michael vanished from beside her, suddenly appearing near the steps of the stage. She was on her own now, but Eleanor was used to that.
She walked towards the back of the hall, hoping to avoid the peppiest of her new pep-filled classmates. There was an empty seat next to a boy who’d already thrown his jacket off, onto the back of his chair, slouching over in a light slumber. Anyone who couldn’t even fake caring about the rules was the type of person she wanted to be a little associated with.
“Is this seat taken?”
The boy, who looked somewhere between Chinese and Filipino, opened his eyes and nodded, going back to sleep once more.
“Cool.” Eleanor sat back into her new seat, eyeing her new peers. She smoothed her skirt over her knees, noticing that all the other girls’ skirts were pressed and wrinkle-free. Is this really my new normal?
“Good morning, everyone. I hope you are all as thrilled as I am to be here today!” Michael cheered, kicking his leg up from his excitement. “As most of you recall, I was a teacher last year, but am pleased to announced that I am now Headmaster here at Iverson Academy for the Gifted.”
The hall burst into applause, most students whooping and hollering. “Thank you, thank you. To all the returning students, welcome back! I am certainly looking forward to what the new school year will teach you. This morning you have the choice to head over to your homeroom or stay here to help your new classmates acquainted to Iverson after their own orientation.”
Majority of the room stood and started to walk out, their mindless chatter acting as white noise for Eleanor as she felt herself drawn to sleep. Michael added, “Oh, there’s tea and breakfast pastries in the cafeteria as well! Help yourselves.”
A few of the teachers ushered the remaining students to move closer to the front. Eleanor wanted to push back, but decided it was in her best interest to make a decent first impression. The sleeping boy followed her with his jacket crumpled in his hands.
“You’re awake.”
He nodded.
“You don’t talk,” she stated.
“Not much,” he replied. The boy didn’t bother to continue or go back to sleep, instead sitting straight up, ready to listen to Michael’s welcome spiel.
She whispered, “I’m Eleanor Shellstrop, senior.”
“Jason Mendoza, junior.”
Eleanor tugged on her blonde hair, scratching her neck in the process, and sighed. She knew she needed to make allies soon, people to study with to help keep her grades up. The fact the walls were probably made of really expensive wood, like mahogany, was proof enough this school meant business.
“Only the brightest and most diligent,” Michael was saying, “are granted an invitation to come here. You are all here because you are the best, the true cream of the crop.  So welcome to the most challenging and rewarding experience you could ever dream of. We are not just the ‘Good School’ as our neighborhood reputation claims, we are the best. Welcome to Iverson Academy.”
“Is there anyone that I would have heard of that graduated from here?” Eleanor asked as she followed Michael to her new dorm room. She quickly added, “I’ve known about Iverson’s spectacular status by just being in Phoenix, but I’ll admit, I’m not well-versed in its alumni.”
“Of course, Miss Shellstrop. As you saw in our Hall of Headmasters, this school was originally dedicated to the education of privileged, but incredibly intelligent sons. Mostly the sons of politicians and foreign diplomats. And in all honesty, that’s still true for today. Majority of our students, boys and girls, come from political backgrounds all over the world.”
“Wow,” she replied, doing her best to sound impressed. She doubted it really was the best and brightest here -- just the ones who came from the brightest families who could afford it.
“Ah yes, this is your dorm.” He handed her a small envelope, heavy in her palm, and she slipped a bronze key from it. “Yours is a single, as you were a last minute addition to the roster, and this is a co-ed floor. I hope you don’t mind that.”
She exhaled, and her shoulders relaxed. I don’t know how I would’ve made it living with a bunch of girly girls. “That’s perfectly fine.”
“Wonderful, Miss Shellstrop!”
“Why do you call students by their last names but encourage us to call you Michael?”
“I’m from a very traditional family, it’s quite the habit to break,” he replied, ushering her into her room. He hovered at the doorway and explained, “Faculty are not allowed to step into a student’s room in any circumstance except for emergencies.”
“Faculty...of the opposite gender?” The walls were a faint blue-grey with a floral pattern, and more wood paneling that matched the rest of the school. There was a large window with an exquisite view of a well-kept courtyard with a working fountain.
“Of any gender. It’s a relatively new policy.”
Eleanor dropped her two duffle bags on the floor next to her full-sized bed. They really don’t cheap out here. “That the traditionally conservative school board approved?”
“We haven’t experienced any dangerous situations without the policy; however, we felt it was better to ensure our students’ safety with a preventative policy instead of waiting for an issue to occur.”
“Excellent.”
“As this is an old building, its original use was not to house students for extended periods of time. So there are no closets or attached bathrooms. All rooms do come with wardrobes, a chest of drawers, and a bookcase for your things. As you can see, there is a desk already stocked with notebooks, binders, and every other office supply you can think of.”
“That’s impressive and generous, thank you. I didn’t bring any other than the school uniforms.” Since that was all I could afford.
“You are welcome, Miss Shellstrop.” Michael looked at his wristwatch. “Your floor advisor should be coming to greet you and take you to your first class. Here is your schedule.”
She walked over to him, uneasy about allowing him full entry to her room, and took the slip of paper to read through. Modern American Literature, British Literature, Advanced Calculus, Advanced Government, Economics 1, BioChemistry, The Philosophy of Ethics, and Woodworking. “Woodworking?”
“It was the last elective with open seats, my apologies.”
“It’s fine,” she waved him off.
“Do you find the rest of the schedule suitable? We didn’t want to overload your first semester with us.”
“This is just for one semester?” Eleanor snapped her jaw shut.
“Yes, you will be able to pick your own classes for the spring semester.”
Eleanor groaned internally, but stuck a smile on her face, hoping Michael wouldn’t notice the dead look in her eyes.
“Hello, Michael, and you must be Eleanor. I’m Tahani Al-Jamil. Oh, look at you, you are so sweet and teensy,” a leggy brunette with caramel-colored skin said, gliding into her room. The girl poked Eleanor’s nose and smiled. “Boop.”
“Oh, you booped me.” Eleanor kept the scowl off her face.
Tahani gave a clipped laugh. “Yes, I did.”
“That’s fun.”
“You two look like you are going to get along swimmingly. Any questions you have, Miss Shellstrop, should be directed to Miss Al-Jamil here. She’ll be happy to entertain you, isn’t that right?”
She reached up to clutch her necklace and gave a long sigh, like she was wishing for something else. “I simply adore entertaining.”
Michael said his goodbyes and strutted away, Eleanor listening to his footsteps grow faint. “Can I ask where that accent is from?”
“High society London. Go on and grab your things, I ought to take you for your first class.”
“Why would you leave London for bumfu-fork Arizona?” Eleanor picked up her backpack, emptying its contents, which were mostly snacks she had doubted would be available here. In this prison. She grabbed a notebook and a couple pencils from the desk - her desk - before stuffing them into her bag.
“Well, I was born in Pakistan,” Tahani replied, flipping her hair gently over her shoulder, “had some schooling in London and then Paris, before my father decided it was time to do business in the States and brought me along, leaving my mother and sister Kamilah in Paris.”
The pair of girls walked down the halls, with Eleanor struggling to keep up with Tahani’s long stride. “I noticed Eleanor that you almost swore when describing Arizona. While the description was rather precise, I do have to warn you that the teachers here do observe a more conservative outlook on language.”
“You don’t say,” she said, rolling her eyes. She couldn’t stop herself this time. Of course, she could tell that swearing wasn’t exactly welcome here, it’s why she said bumfork. Bumfork. Who was this girl?
“Now, you’ll attend 4 classes per day, excluding homeroom, and the schedule alternates. Somehow by the end of the term, it’ll all even out so you needn’t worry about that.”
“I wasn’t, but thank you.”
“My pleasure,” Tahani said, placing her hand on Eleanor’s shoulder, and ignored the blonde’s obvious recoil. “Due to orientation this morning, we’ll be skipping homeroom and here’s your first class at Iverson Academy. The Philosophy of Ethics.”
Eleanor hovered at the door, hesitant to enter, until the small Asian woman sitting at her desk looked up and called her in. The teacher had short black hair, and thin, wire-framed glasses, and smiled, “You must be Miss Eleanor Shellstrop. I’m your Ethics teacher, Jessica Yeh.”
“Ethics,” she repeated, breaking the word up into long syllables.
“It’s a senior requirement,” Jessica replied, before turning to the rest of the class. “This is one of the new transfer students, Eleanor Shellstrop. Where are you from?”
“Just down the street in Phoenix.”
“Nevertheless, welcome to Iverson. Please have a seat next to Chidi.”
A lean, athletic boy raised his hand and she did as she was instructed, dropping into the seat next to him. He had deep brown eyes, with light flecks of gold she noticed when the streaming light from the windows hit him just right, black framed glasses,  and dark skin that looked soft and inviting. Eleanor shook her head and introduced herself, “Hi Cheeto, you can call me Eleanor.”
“I-it’s Chidi,” he corrected her. “Chidi Anagonye. Nice to meet you. Do you like clowns?”
She had pulled out her notebook and placed it on the desk, not even noticing the giant clown on its cover. “Oh my fu-forking god. Is everyone’s notebooks like this?”
“No, our school supplies are actually customized by the school,” he whispered. “Mine has Plato and Socrates making the Spy Vs. Spy pose. I love it.”
“Right, nerd,” she said under her breath.
“I’m sorry?”
“Nothing, I didn’t say anything. What’s the rest of your schedule look like?”
He rattled off his list of classes, his excitement growing with each one, before ending with, “I have BioChemistry today too.”
“Perfect!” She exclaimed just a touch too loudly, drawing the attention of her peers once again. Ignoring Chidi’s side-ey, Eleanor quickly lied, “Iverson is perfect! The revelation is just happening right now. Sorry, Miss-- Jessica.”
“That’s fine, Miss Shellstrop. Please continue to focus though.” Their teacher smiled and continued going over the semester syllabus and what she expected each of them to learn by the time finals rolled around.
In a hushed voice, Eleanor asked, “Can we meet after this class? I want to make sure I’m all caught up in Biology and Chemistry. Because that’s what BioChemistry is, right?”
“Y-yes. BioChemistry is the study of chemistry within living biological organisms.”
“Right, exactly, so what do you say? Partner up?”
“Sure? Sure, I guess.”
Eleanor beamed at him and turned her attention back to Jessica, who was now giving a brief rundown on the most famous philosophers.
Five minutes into their short break between classes, Eleanor had finally stopped dragging Chidi and freed his hand from her deathgrip. He cupped his own hand, massaging lightly, and flinched at the pain. “Eleanor, what’s wrong? Is everything okay? Also, you’re really strong.”
She noticed he spoke with a faint accent. “Where are you from, Chidi?”
“I was born in Nigeria, completely accidental, apparently I couldn’t wait to get out of my mom before she got home from her business trip. So I grew up in Senegal,” he explained, sitting down on the window bench in the empty hallway. “But my dad was an esteemed ethics professor, and was asked to do speaking engagements all the time, so he took me along. I spent some time in Hong Kong and Paris, picking up a little bit of both languages, before he died.”
She sat beside him and reached for his hand. “I’m so sorry.”
“It happened when I was 12, and since then, my mom and I have lived in the States. She helped out on the Obama campaign, but not publicly. Wouldn’t have helped the American part of his angle.” Their hands were still intertwined and he immediately pulled away. “How about you?”
“From Phoenix, Arizona. Dad died when I was 15, but I hadn’t seen him in 3 years since he left my mom and me. Then I got emancipated from my mom because she was an alcoholic who forgot she had a daughter still.”
“And despite all that, you got into Iverson Academy on an academic scholarship. Is it true that you worked on the Paradise Valley’s mayor’s office?”
She didn’t say anything, instead letting an awkward smile rest on her lips. Chidi smiled back and admitted, “I don’t make friends every easily, Eleanor, but I feel like I can trust you. Is that stupid?”
“No, that’s great!” She took her headband off and ran her fingers through her hair, feeling weightless. “In fact, I need you to promise me that you would never betray me. Like a friendship vow.”
“I promise you that I will never say or do anything to cause you harm.”
“Good, because I’m not whoever Michael thinks I am. I didn’t have a 3.9 unweighted GPA, I barely had a GPA. I didn’t volunteer in the mayor’s office and I’m afraid of clowns. Like I don’t even eat those delicious Mexican clown candies you see on the street for 50 cents.” She finished with jazz hands. “There’s been a big mistake. I’m not supposed to be here.”
“Paleta Payaso,” he replied, before whipping his gaze back up to her. “Wait, what?”
