This vest I have not been able to button since 2011!!! 2011 I was in my 230s. 2018 I am 271. I am losing inches like crazy and my body began to be reshaped when I started AfroBeatFit. Now with the weight-loss surgery, I am bound to shed more in addition to going back to AfroBeat sweat sessions, personal trainer, gym life and balanced healthy eating lifestyle!

Episode 60: Innovators Roundtable - Afrobeat Fit
In this episode, Keesa & Djevna discuss the good–a riveting and historically accurate speech form NOLA’s mayor, the bad–acts of terror in Manchester and Portland, and the ugly–45’s awkward encounters abroad. We share our faves of the week–Sassy 5 year old anyone?–and our 3-6-Oh NO goes to one Texas teacher’s awful attempt at superlatives. This week is the third edition of the “Innovators Roundtable - Afrobeat Fit” (34:40), where we talk to young professionals who are finding innovative & creative ways to make a difference in their communities! We're talking to Kemi Omisore of @afrobeatfit, a fitness brand that aims to get everyone moving and in shape to the tunes of African-inspired beats. We’re excited for you to learn about Kemi creating her own opportunity! Check out the episode to hear more and if you love it, LIKE and share!

Why surgery?
It took me a very long time to want to consider surgery. I have been physically active for years and would try every single diet under the sun, from HCG, to Herbalife, to the Indian GM Diet you name it!! For me these had short term effects and I truly had not learned continual eating habits. I also was a foodie. When I say foodie I am not talking about fast food joints. I liked to go to different restaurants and life the life and eat what I wanted. So long as I was exercising right? That worked for me in my 20s. I remember I would eat a pint of Ben & Jerrys ice cream everyday of the night and still maintain my weight. That was because I went out dancing every weekend. But once I got into my 30s, that method no longer worked for me. I joined a gym and started going to the park for walks. I intentionally would watch what I ate and get my water intake and did not see restyle in even 3 weeks. So then I gave in and started the yo yo diets with some of the mentioned above techniques.
Let me be very candid in the next paragraph. It wasn’t until my weight spiked into the 300s and I was not able to do simple things like tie my shoe or other personal things without being out of breathe or unable to reach that I had enough! I was embarrassed and disgusted at myself. Never had I been in the 300s. That was when I started to stop spending money on food and invest in wellness products such as ItWorks and attend a fun innovative workout sweat session called AfroBeatFit (check them out at www.afrobeatfit.com) ! I had to learn to reallocate my funds. I noticed the weight was slowly but surely coming off and most importantly the inches. I was excited and it felt good. This only had lasted for a few months though. I was plateauing and did not know why.
During this plateau season, I was introduced to Bariatric surgery from one of my great friends at work. I saw her transformation and I had so many questions. She was so open to answer them and encouraged me to attend a seminar at Kent Hospital just to check it out and get started on the process. Because it takes about 6 months and rather than waiting to think about it, at least the ball would be rolling. I took her advice and it was such a great decision for many reasons.
1- The seminar helped me to get past the stigma of what people think about surgery. Bariatric surgery is NOT an easy way out. It takes work and dedication and is a TOOL to the healthy habits you already have.
2- I was able to be set-up with a nutritionist for 6 months. It was my first time ever going to a nutritionist. The great thing about health insurance is that here services are always available. I was introduced to a whole new way of thinking about food. My shopping cart was looking more and more colorful and healthy. I started to have more healthy options and alternatives. Keeping a food journal helped to keep me accountable to what I ate. My one awesome friend at school says, “you bite it, you write it”.
3- I became more focused on my goals and determined to stick to it this time!! Even during the holidays, by my 4th visit I lost a total of 12 pounds in January!! I was able to see that I had the tenacity needed to be able to live a healthy lifestyle even with temptations! SIDENOTE: I don’t know what it was, but this year my team at work had cake almost every week!!! I had a sliver here and there but by the time I weight in on my last nutritionist visit in May, I lost a total of 19 pounds and was finally in my 290’s!!
So to answer the question why surgery? I opted for surgery because it has taken me down a path I never would have walked if I would have stuck to my own routine and remain in the same yo yo rollercoaster cycle.
You can do anything your mind is set to accomplish.
💋 Countess B.

Happy 2nd Sleevesary
June 13th marked my 2nd Anniversary of my Sleeve surgery. To prepare for the celebration I started the Daniel Fast June 1st and began working out 3 times a week. Within the past two weeks I lost 9 pounds!!!! It feels SO good to back on track! Thanks to my mommy joining me in the Daniel Fast as well as Coach Stephanie of Club Blessed and Kemi Omisore of AfroBeatFit. All the support has been around me and I just needed to tap back into the game and not tap out. Tap into my inner motivation and tap into my supports! I look forward to my post-op appointment on June 18th! So now what we will do is every 14th day we will allot ourselves to slightly indulge in a goodie and then go back on the Daniel Fast for another 13 days and repeat. Have faith you all! You can do it!
