#ai artists are not artists

I suggest we STOP using the term Ai-art. First of all, Ai-generations are not art. It’s only images generated by the algorythm that technically is not an Artificial Intellect either.
Lets not confuse people, who aren’t artists and don’t get the difference between digital art created by living humans and the generated images which are at the same time created using living artist’s copyrighted works and also can not be copyrighted themselves, since they are produced by machines, not humans (no matter what those funny terms of service sections on those generator’s website says).
Generated images. NOT ai-art.

I love how the fact that I have a more developed vernacular than a house fly angers some people on Instagram. "SoOoOo dramatic." Bro. What do you want me to say? "AI 'art' is bad because it's stupid and dumb and I don't like it?" Come on.
Also the fact that AI "art" is comparable to digital art or collage art in this person's eyes is fucking hilarious to me. Ah yes, the thing I spent hours of my life on--thinking of the composition, the color story, the overall feel--is the same thing as mindlessly typing words into a generator that rips other people's art and does the "collage" work for me. Yep.
The only way I'll believe AI can make art is if we have a Detroit: Become Human kind of situation
Anyway fuck AI art and go support actual people artists.

How to avoid AI art on DeviantArt
Although I don't upload on DeviantArt anymore, I still go on there to look for new artwork, especially from those I follow, and add to my Favorites.
That said, it's become increasingly difficult to find new artists to support because it seems like the majority of new uploads are AI generated images.
So, for those of you who still use DA and are looking for quality art to view and artists to support, I put together a handy list of things to watch out for. Things to help you make sure that you're not inadvertently supporting an AI "artist."
Accounts created within the last two years. In other words, accounts that popped up just as these AI technologies started to take off, because that's when they decided to try becoming an "artist" themselves. The shorter the account age, the more suspicious you should be.
Galleries with large amounts of uploads submitted within a short time frame. It's easy to submit a whole bunch of images when you don't have to manually paint each one and just have the AI program create them for you. Especially look out for those with multiple images that look very similar to each other; they're all alternate versions of the same AI prompt. Conversely, images that look VERY different from each other and have no consistent style are another obvious sign that the uploaders didn't make anything themselves and are just using various prompts.
Uploads with generic titles, or titles that sound like keywords being strung together. In some cases, they may literally just be using their AI prompts as the titles. In others, the titles may even sound like random computer file names, because that's basically what they are and the uploader isn't making much of an effort to hide that.
Uploads with minimal tags or descriptions, or none at all. Most actual artists who take hours to create a new piece would have something to say about the process, their thoughts about the image, or what the piece was for. AI uploaders just generate and upload, and thus usually have nothing to say about it.
Conversely, uploads that actually mention in the tags or descriptions that they are AI generated. This seems to be happening less often as certain bad actors want the reputation of being a great artist while hiding the fact that they didn't actually make any of their images. However, if you take a few seconds to look for these things, some of them may still give it away. Keep an eye out for AI generator names like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Artbreeder, and so on. Also, some uploaders will actually mention AI in their username.
Images of characters from the waist up, but very few full-body ones. AI generators seem to favor faces over other parts of the body. As a result, most galleries of AI character art will consist entirely of portraits. Bonus points if there are no hands. Also be on the lookout for images where the shading is a bit too smooth on the face, and where the quality starts to dip the further away from the face you get.
Male users. This may seem random and arbitrary, but seriously, since the beginning when crypto and NFTs first became widespread, it was men who were the primary consumers of this technology. There's a reason they're called cryptoBROs after all. In fact, a lot of AI users are part of this same exact crowd. Even more of a reason to stay away from AI art. But you will always be able to tell when a man is uploading AI images because of the way he writes and interacts online. They are very dry, minimalist, transactional, and often shady or even perverted (how many AI images are there of the "sexy girl with big boobs" type by now?).
Lastly, here's a handy journal by Stop-AI-replace with some tags you can block, plus how to make DA stop recommending AI art to you on the home page. Sadly it won't work for every image ever, but it's a good start:
That's all for now. As usual, certain images have that particular style that you can just tell at a glance could only come from an AI program, but some uploaders have been going to great pains to try to hide it the best they can. Don't get duped!

Good news, fellow artists! Nightshade has finally been released by the UChicago team! If you aren't aware of what Nightshade is, it's a tool that helps poison AI datasets so that the model "sees" something different from what an image actually depicts. It's the same team that released Glaze, which helps protect art against style mimicry (aka those finetuned models that try to rip off a specific artist). As they show in their paper, even a hundred poisoned concepts make a huge difference.

(Reminder that glazing your art is more important than nighshading it, as they mention in their tweets above, so when you're uploading your art, try to glaze it at the very least.)

ai generated images make me increasingly sad and tired the more i see them in more and more casual contexts. i dont know how to explain, but it just fills the world with a bunch of nothing. no matter how visually stunning the pictures might be, there's nothing behind it for me. no dedication, no emotions, no feelings, no hard work or creativity, nothing i can truly think about, admire or enjoy. i dont think thats how art is supposed to be

cant tell you how bad it feels to constantly tell other artists to come to tumblr, because its the last good website that isn't fucked up by spoonfeeding algorithms and AI bullshit and isn't based around meaningless likes
just to watch that all fall apart in the last year or so and especially the last two weeks
there's nowhere good to go anymore for artists.
edit - a lot of people are saying the tags are important so actually, you'll look at my tags.
#please dont delete your accounts because of the AI crap. your art deserves more than being lost like that #if you have a good PC please glaze or nightshade it. if you dont or it doesnt work with your style (like mine) please start watermarking #use a plain-ish font. make it your username. if people can't google what your watermark says and find ur account its not a good watermark #it needs to be central in the image - NOT on the canvas edges - and put it in multiple places if you are compelled #please dont stop posting your art because of this shit. we just have to hope regulations will come slamming down on these shitheads#in the next year or two and you want to have accounts to come back to. the world Needs real art #if we all leave that just makes more room for these scam artists to fill in with their soulless recycled garbage #improvise adapt overcome. it sucks but it is what it is for the moment. safeguard yourself as best you can without making #years of art from thousands of artists lost media. the digital world and art is too temporary to hastily click a Delete button out of spite

PSA: Tumblr/Wordpress is preparing to start selling our user data to Midjourney and OpenAI.
you have to MANUALLY opt out of it as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
to opt out on desktop, click your blog ➡️ blog settings ➡️ scroll til you see visibility options and it’ll be the last option to toggle.
to opt out on mobile, click your blog ➡️ scroll then click visibility ➡️ toggle opt out option.
if you’ve already opted out of showing up in google searches, it’s preselected for you. if you don’t have the option available, update your app or close your browser/refresh a few times. important to note you also have to opt out for each blog you own separately, so if you’d like to prevent AI scraping your blog i’d really recommend taking the time to opt out. Also idk if I need to state this publicly again but hello, Ai is my name and I'm an artist but I draw things with my hands. I'm not artificial intelligence; if anything, I'm organic stupidity.

So Netflix is releasing this animated movie but here’s the thing - all backgrounds are done in AI. No actual BG artists were hired or credited for this work.
And here’s the kicker - I gave them too much credit. I realized that not even the AI users are credited apparently.
Check this out:
Tumblr media
“+Human”. No names, no nothing.
Tumblr media
I know it’s tempting, but please don’t hate-watch this thing. Numbers equal profit even if the people watching are just doing it to mock. Don’t give Netflix and other studios even more incentive to fire more animators and replace them with machines trained on their work and skill. Hilariously, the excuse used is ‘there aren’t enough artists’. That’s not true - there are more than enough artists, but the real issue is that no one wants to pay a living wage. Here’s a short video about the reality of animation in Japan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The biggest winners in this equation at the end of the day are the AI infrastructure owners - owners of Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, etc. Do not feed this machine, it creates more monopolization of entire industries, raises a powerful few and dehumanizes the rest.
EDIT: a lot of people are unsure what the anime’s called - it’s The Dog and the Boy.
