What is it with all these TikTok/Twitter feminists idolizing and defending Aileen Wuornos?

“I love her she’s the best!”

“She did what she had to do!”

“She was defending herself,”

I bet money that in the same breathe, they will condemn and call out anyone who idolizes people like Jeffery Dahmer and Ted Bundy and mock them openly and rightfully.

But Aileen gets a free pass?

Just because she had a horrible childhood?

I don’t agree with her getting the Death penalty.

But other than her first victim, as far as we know, her victims were innocent.

Was she handed a bad hand? Yes. Did she deserve to heal? Yes.

But is she a hero? No.

She was a troubled woman with a bad past and made terrible decisions just like the rest of these damn serial killers.

I mean, yeah, there's always a double-standard when it comes to female... anything, really, but ESPECIALLY serial killers. They always try to come up with some reason she was justified or some way she's "not as bad" as her male counterparts.

No one wants to admit a female serial killer is still a serial killer and thus just as much a monster as male serial killers.

Also, no one owes anyone that perceived fuckability. It's fine to find someone attractive and even find yourself fantasizing but it's not owed to you. They did an excellent job making him look like the doomed prince.

This is such a good point, and I could not agree more. (Although ftr, "the doomed prince" always makes me think of Hamlet, and god knows Michael was far more attractive in that role. Haha.)

But I think what you said is part of why the comments bother me so much. It's that it becomes blatantly clear that these fans only cared about Michael as long as he remained what they perceived as "fuckable"--that regardless of whether they wanted to have sex with him, he is seen as more "acceptable" overall when he looks a certain way and less so when he doesn't. I think Anna's snarky comments about Michael's appearance over the years have bothered me for a similar reason, because they also speak to her only finding him attractive when he looks a certain way.

Again, this is not to say that Michael has to look fuckable at all times, but it's clearly something that AL places value on the way the fans do, though in her case, it's because she can use it as something to brag about. So that's why we won't see her make a post to the effect of "So proud of him for taking on this difficult role," because she knows no one is going to want to fuck Michael while he looks like Prince Andrew. Her disapproving of his looks while taking on a specific role is nothing new, as she did the same thing when he played Chris Tarrant in Quiz, but it also gives an indication that she and the fans are on the same level of maturity, which again goes back to those Twitter comments striking such a nerve in me.

Michael is an actor. His job is to act, to become and embody whatever role he is playing to the best of his ability. Some people seem to think that acting is only about being glamorous, but if we are going to express outrage when the media and others make remarks about Charlize Theron "uglying it up" to play Aileen Wuornos when all she was doing was her job, then we should be just as outraged at people attacking Michael for looking "ugly" for doing his. (Also, the fact that Monster came out in 2003 and we still need to have this same conversation twenty fucking years later is utterly depressing...)

All this to say that yes, attractiveness and sex appeal/charisma can be and often are important parts of what makes an actor bankable, but looks alone do not make someone a talented actor, nor a good person. And maybe if people looked beyond the surface of their own desires, they might start to realize that...

When people were like Monster was WAY too sympathetic a portrayal of Aileen Wuornos I just felt like that was such a stupid observation. Like we're at a point with male serial killers where we see an adaptation about their lives, and we call it tasteless but we mostly ignore the implications. We're kind of over it. Whereas executed women who killed johns are apparently permanently despicable, forever an unbroachable topic. Like yeah at some point, especially after the first couple of people she killed, Wuornos absolutely wasn't doing it in self defence like she claimed, but it ain't like the movie ever tries to sell that lie in the first place. In a way, it's not about Monster lending a sympathetic aspect to her life, so much as the movie depicting her as a real life woman who experienced a fair amount of hardship to get to a point where she truly believed her violence was necessary. If the movie pretended she had always been some bland, sexy femme fatale, let her fall into a box that was easier for male audiences to understand and compartmentalize, or simply brushed over the fact that she genuinely loved another woman, then no one would be crying about unreasonable levels of sympathy given to Wuornos. Instead, Monster would get that balanced and insanely average reaction people afford quite happily to movies and shows about fuckin Ramirez or Bundy. I mean, sorry, but it's fundamentally a shit argument. Feel free to not like the movie, (I'm not sure I do all that much) but don't try to hide behind wise male moralizing about "women who were criminals" and the "victims" you probably couldn't even name, lmao

Love me some Sebastian Stan, but in this movie I hated his gross porn stache and his guts. You really get an understanding for how people are created to be villains.

My favourite part about this movie is that Taron Egerton sung all of the Elton John songs himself. I like that it doesn’t glorify his life but rather tells it how it is. Also, Richard Madden is a total hottie in this movie.

The acting is just phenomenal, Rami Malek is just a freaking fantastic Freddie Mercury. Who doesn’t love watching a movie about an absolute gay icon.
