Ways NASA Studies the Ocean

We live on a water planet. The ocean covers a huge part of the Earth's surface – earning it the name Blue Marble.

The ocean is one of Earth’s largest ecosystems and helps moderate Earth’s climate. NASA scientists spend a lot of time studying the ocean and how it is changing as Earth’s climate changes.

In the last few years, NASA has launched an array of missions dedicated to studying this precious part of our planet, with more to come. For World Oceans Month, which starts in June, here are new ways NASA studies the ocean.

1. Seeing the colors of the ocean 🎨

A new NASA mission called PACE will see Earth’s oceans in more color than ever before. The color of the ocean is determined by the interaction of sunlight with substances or particles present in seawater.

Scheduled to launch in 2024, PACE will help scientists assess ocean health by measuring the distribution of phytoplankton, tiny plants and algae that sustain the marine food web. PACE will also continue measuring key atmospheric variables associated with air quality and Earth's climate.

2. Surveying surface water around the globe 💧

The SWOT satellite, launched in late 2022, is studying Earth’s freshwater – from oceans and coasts to rivers, lakes and more – to create the first global survey of Earth’s surface water.

SWOT is able to measure the elevation of water, observing how major bodies of water are changing and detecting ocean features. The data SWOT collects will help scientists assess water resources, track regional sea level changes, monitor changing coastlines, and observe small ocean currents and eddies.

3. Setting sail to understand interactions between the ocean and atmosphere 🚢

With research aircraft, a research ship, and autonomous ocean instruments like gliders, NASA’s S-MODE mission is setting sail to study Earth’s oceans up close. Their goal? To understand ocean whirlpools, eddies and currents.

These swirling ocean features drive the give-and-take of nutrients and energy between the ocean and atmosphere and, ultimately, help shape Earth’s climate.

5. Designing new missions to study Earth’s oceans! 🌊

NASA is currently designing a new space-based instrument called GLIMR that will help scientists observe and monitor oceans throughout the Gulf of Mexico, the southeastern U.S. coastline and the Amazon River plume that stretches to the Atlantic Ocean. GLIMR will also provide important information about oil spills, harmful algae blooms, water quality and more to local agencies.

6. Taking the ocean to new heights ⬆️

The U.S.-European Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite is helping researchers measure the height of the ocean - a key component in understanding how Earth’s climate is changing.

This mission, which launched in 2020, has a serious job to do. It’s not only helping meteorologists improve their weather forecasts, but it’s helping researchers understand how climate change is changing Earth’s coastlines in real time.

Many of us in Western Washington and the Pacific Northwest remember the days when we didn’t have a “smoke season.” Mount Rainier National Park is being periodically impacted by smoke from regional wildfires like the Retreat Fire, burning to the east of the park. The current hot, dry forecast creates ideal conditions for fires to start and spread. Please do your part to help wildfire crews working on the current fires and reduce future fire risk:

2) Give ‘em a brake – slow down in areas where fire crews are present.

3) Control your campfires. While fires are still currently allowed in park campgrounds, visitors should practice vigilant fire safety. Always keep water nearby and completely drown your campfires when done. Never leave a burning campfire. If it’s warm to the touch, it’s too warm to leave. Propane or butane powered stoves are a great alternative to campfires.

4) Don’t drive or park on vegetation! Parking on dry vegetation not only damages the vegetation, but engine heat and leaking fluids can lead to increased fire risk.

5) Towing a boat or camper? Secure your chains! Unsecured chains can spark and cause wildfires.

6) If you fly, we can’t - Drones are prohibited in national parks and near wildfires and can interfere with wildland fire aircraft. Leave your drone at home.

7) If you smoke, ash your cigarettes in ashtrays & always make sure butts are fully extinguished before properly discarding in trash receptacles.

There was no breath of relief when you walked inside, only a looming forecast of some new threat approaching. There was definitely no feeling of contentment, the expectation of moving ever-present. The penthouse, on the other hand, possessed many of these traits, though you weren't certain it was because of the building, rather the person you shared it with.

Safety and comfort were easily achieved when you pulled into the parking lot, two check marks on your mental list considering this issue, but there was something else present as well.

The air seemed hollow. It filled your lungs, leaving an empty feeling in your stomach, waiting to be appeased.

With a discontented sigh, you reached around your back to begin taking off the confining gown. While beautiful, it had become uncomfortable after a while, as most pretty things did.

Your hands never made it.

Instead, they were snatched midair, completely forgotten as Chrollo's lips crashed against yours. You gasped, but he captured the noise easily, dropping your hands in favor of cupping your face with one of his. Another found its way around your waist, offering a bit of support as you began to melt further and further into his arms.

The feeling of Chrollo's mouth against yours was captivating, possessing a siren-like allure that overpowered your corporeal need for oxygen.

If this was what asphyxiation was like, you would gladly suffocate under his control.

Backing up, you attempted to find something, anything, to lean on, scared that if this continued your legs might turn to putty. Thankfully, he followed, keeping a constant hold on your frame.

A wall hit your back, prompting another startled exhale. He took advantage of this one too, running his tongue against the rim of your bottom lip in a wordless request. The air in your lungs seemed to dissipate as you allowed his tongue to meet yours, clinging to his touch like it was your only lifeline.

Every bit of contact was felt in your abdomen, a quiet spark that had you sighing in delight.

So when he finally pulled away, you couldn't help the quiet, pitiful whine that left your throat.

His breathing wasn't anywhere near as quick, but as he rested his forehead against yours, the ardent look in his eyes seemed to be quite the indication as to what was running through his mind.

"Is this okay?"

And you immediately decided that it was. Your words back at the party were nothing but honest.

You wanted to be his, in every way possible.

Regardless, your fervent nod didn't seem to satisfy him.

Red fabric pooled at your feet like a fiery sea. The chilliness of winter air attacked your body, now only protected by mere undergarments.

And although patience happened to be one of his more noteworthy traits, he would also be a liar if he didn't admit this moment had frequently taunted his restraint for the past few weeks.

And damn, if the wait wasn't worth it.

He sucked in a sharp breath, steel eyes once cold and uncaring, now ablaze with desire for you.

"Fuck."

His mouth found yours again before following a route similar to the one before, descending past your jaw and toward your neck. This time, however, he continued downward to your chest. Skin still frigid, his lips were sparked fireworks with every touch.

Creating the world’s “greenest” highway in a desert city: URB city design

Bagherian’s concept includes “water-sensitive landscape design” that includes native flora and drought-resistant plants suited to the arid climate, and soil mixed with zeolite, an absorbent crystal that aids water retention.

These “passive techniques” are complemented with smart irrigation technology, he added, “which use real-time data to adjust watering schedules based on soil moisture levels, weather forecasts, and plant needs.”

Smart tech and solar-power

The autonomous solar-powered tram is just one aspect of the proposed highway’s transport system: above the tram line, a network of green areas, parks and overpasses would increase connectivity and walkability of the city, which is currently tough to navigate on foot.

The highway would also integrate smart technology, such as “internet of things” (IoT) sensors, to manage traffic and optimize energy use.

Bagherian’s designs allow for 300-megawatt solar panels and a storage system to be embedded in the tracks, that would power the tram line, as well as generate clean energy for an estimated 130,000 homes.

And the green spaces — including parks and community gardens — would provide space for one million trees, which would also help cool the city and improve air quality.

It’s late afternoon by the time James is done with everything, thankful that he managed to dispatch Bird in just under two and a half hours after the epic battle he’d had with D’Ambrosio the other night. The air is still cloying as he makes his way to the Player’s Lounge, humid even though the weather has broken a little. The ground is damp, play suspended on the outer courts and the roof drawn over on Centre and Court One now. It must have tipped it down while he was in the presser.

The roof freaks him out, if he’s completely honest. This morning, before the match, he’d looked at the weather forecast and felt his stomach sink. There’s something claustrophobic about it, the lights, the echo, it never feels right, not here. It’s different in Melbourne, and at the US. Something about playing on Centre with the roof over sends his blood pressure into a spike, he’d almost prefer to go back to the old days of rain delays and endless waiting. Maybe that’s partly why he went out there with such ruthlessness today. Get it done.

He finds André in the Players’ Lounge, grazing on a salad and drinking a lurid green protein shake. “The King of the one-handed backhand,” he announces when he sees James. “Congrats man, that was a masterclass.”

“Thanks. Great win for you too, Frijns is a tough opponent. Still up for dinner later?” James asks, slipping into the seat next to him and popping the tab on a can of Coke Zero. André leans back in his chair, stretching his arms above his head. “Yeah sure, Nobu or this…not much of a contest.” One of André’s favourite things to do at Wimbledon is to complain how the food in the restaurant isn’t as good quality as at Roland-Garros. James rolls his eyes but he’s eager to get out of here too. “I knew you were gonna win today, could feel it in my bones.” André drops his arm around James’ shoulder, giving him an affectionate squeeze.

“There’s life in the old knee yet.”

“They’re in a frenzy for you here you know,” André drawls, abandoning his salad with a face and pushing the bowl away. “You heard they’ve renamed the hill? It’s Rossiter Ridge now.” He dissolves into laughter, James following suit, hiccoughing into André’s shoulder. This is what he’s going to miss, almost as much as playing competitive tennis himself. How many people can say they get to travel the world with their best friend year after year. When he regains his composure and looks up, Pascal Wehrlein is scowling at them across the room.

“These young guys are so boring,” André complains, flipping his fellow countryman the finger as soon as Pascal’s back is turned. “Next Gen. I swear none of them know how to have fun anymore, media darlings with their entourages and Netflix documentaries. Half of them probably never got their dick sucked in their lives.”

“You’re still pissed off about that Laver Cup match last year I see.” James shakes his head, even though he does get it.

“He shouldn’t be in the Laver Cup if he doesn’t understand how a team works. That was the worst doubles match I’ve ever played in my life, it was a fucking nightmare. Anyway, been following this?” André points over to the TV. James shakes his head, looking up in time to see Jev hit a return wide, losing him the match. Mortara shakes his hand at the net before throwing his wristbands up into the crowd, the camera panning to Jev for a moment as he sits down at his bench gathering his things together. “Unfair that he looks so hot even when he loses,” André bemoans.
