{Akari and Taiga snuck out when they're supposed to be studying for a test; to ride a roller coaster.]
Akari, to her cousin: You really think we can ride the Demonator and be back before uncle Taro gets home?
Taiga: Okay, let's think this through, alright? It's been 17 minutes since we were at the sign that said "Two Hours From This Point." You'd figure 1 hour and 43 minutes for the line, six minutes to ride the Demonator, 13 minutes to grab a quick snack, and 20 minutes to fly home. That puts us at the front door at exactly 10:58, so that's two minutes before my Dad said he'd be home by.
[Akari stares at Taiga bewildered.]
Akari: Okay, like if you could figure all that out, why are you failing math?
Taiga: Because this is important.
????: That's a solid plan but there's one problem.
(Taiga and Akari went blue in the face and slowly turned around to find Zero standing behind them; with a look that screamed: "You are so busted!".)
Taiga: Oh...
Akari: ...Frak!

Akari, to her brother: Hey, are oranges called oranges because oranges are orange, or is orange called orange because oranges are orange?
[Zero's head is filled with computer dial up sounds.]
Zero: …Did you seriously just say orange eight times in one sentence, and it actually makes sense???

Alice In Borderland: The Next Generation
♤ . ♡ . ◇ . ♧ . ♤ . ♡ . ◇ . ♧
characters | next chapter | masterlist
C H A R A C T E R S
tw// a shit ton of spoilers from the manga series (alice in borderland, alice in borderland: retry and alice on border road) and the netflix show
Kojima Arisu (♡)
Daughter of Ryōhei and Yuzuha Arisu
18 y.o.
Accompanies her mother in climbing mountains, and looks through her father's psychology books.
Big fan of video games. Just like her father. She plays with her dad when he has free time. And her friends as well. Mostly they play either some of Arisu's old games, or new games programmed by Niragi and Tsuki themselves.
Highschool junior (same class as Akari).
Part of the school's softball team.
Looks harmless, she's actually not :)
Before arriving in the Borderlands, she was the most squeamish around blood (she was literally trying her best not to freak out in her first game after seeing a dead player), but now she's used to it.
Chishiya Akari (◇)
Daughter of Kuina Hikari and Chishiya Shuntarō
18 y.o.
Akari was part of an abusive family until the age of three, when she was sent to an orphanage after her biological parents were taken by the child protective services. She met Chishiya and Kuina two years later, at a volunteering campaign. After along time, when they grew close to her, she got adopted by both of them (even tho her last name is Chishiya)
Although Kuina and Chishiya are her legal guardians, she considers them both as her parents (they're not married, they're just co-parenting her. Akari calls them mom and dad though).
Youngest and the smartest of the group (difference of 1 month between her and Kojima).
Kuina taught her martial arts, and how to be humble, while Chishiya on the other hand taught her about medical stuff and other stuff.
She does volunteering. Especially at the orphanage she was moved at before, to help others that were less lucky than her. Also helped Kuina in taking care of her (Kuina's) mother.
Wears little braids in her hair. Kuina taught her how to do them as a child.
Ironically, she's also the shortest of the group.
Tsuki Niragi (♧)
Daughter of Suguru Niragi
19 y.o.
Oldest of the three (difference of 7 months between her and Kojima)
Her mother passed away while giving birth. It was hard for Niragi in the first years, but he got help from Usagi, Kuina, Arisu and the others
Highschool senior
Although she inherited her father's eyesight, when playing sports like archery, she wears contact lenses instead of glasses.
In her free time, she helps her dad in making backgrounds/bgm for his games. As a hobby, she plays electric guitar
Gives zero fucks when it comes to people commenting about her but would throw hands everytime someone talks shit about her friends and close ones.
Usually wears fake piercings (left nostril and snake bites). The only real ones are at her ears (4 on each) and a belly button one she got at 16 during a trip at a beach resort (Niragi wasn't so happy about it tho)
Danma Naoki (♤) & Danma Nara (♤)
Nephews of Danma Takeru
19 y.o. (Nara is older that Naoki by 3 minutes)
Their father, aka Hatter's brother told them about him when they were younger, but they never got to know him since he died in the comet crash.
While Naoki is more reckless than his sister, he's still the protective one between them.
Before arriving in the Borderlands, Nara and Naoki were known for their talents when it comes to art/dance (Naoki draws while Nara is the one who dances)
Highschool seniors (same class as Tsuki)
They're really close to Tsuki. They've been knowing each other since kindergarten. Especially Naoki (they're teasing each other a lot. And they also have nicknames for each other).
They formed a campsite not long after arriving at the Borderlands. Something like The Beach, except the numerous hook-ups and the building is somewhat smaller.
An Misato (◇)
Son of An Rizuna
19 y.o.
Part of Nara and Naoki's campsite. Also is one of the people with most braincells between them.
He's pretty much vibing around when he's not in a game.
Also knows medicine stuff (he treats the twins when they're injured after coming back from a game)
Although he may look cold, he's actually nice when you get to know him.
Done with everyone's bullshit on a daily basis.
Misato, Kiro and Akari stick together pretty much. A genius trio, you may call it
Tall. AF.
Yamato Isamu (♧)
20 y.o.
Isamu grew up in a normal family. One day both of his parents died in a car accident on their way home. Isamu has 2 little siblings, twins. He raised them by himself many years.
College student, but had a lot of part time jobs before the Borderlands.
Radiates golden retriever energy, but would still beat ass if provoked
Lowkey a himbo

RPG Maker Fever Hero & Issues
Warning: This article may contain spoilers and the content inappropriate for children…or may not contain. But get the children away from the screen just in case.
Five little authors went out to write. One little author has missed the deadline. Four little authors didn’t pay him much mind. Three authors are left since fourth drank the lye. Three little authors are bursting with confidence. One overworked himself and other two ignored his absence. Two little authors try to finish hard task. Teddy bear hugged one and one stands at last. One little author is left all alone. He hung himself on the chandelier and then there were none…Then who has finished this article? And why this teddy bear is giving me a weird look?
1. Walking on a Star Unknown
Tumblr media
Walking on a Star Unknown is the latest game made by Segawa and most heartwarming out of her three games (while End Roll was more heartbreaking than heartwarming, and Farethere City is somewhere in-between). Game  tells a story of two alien siblings, whose ship has crashed on the unfamiliar planet, where they decide to participate in the cooking tournament to get their ship fixed. Gameplay is simple yet very fun - most of the time you gather ingredients, learn new recipes, do side-quests and make friends with the planet inhabitants. Game has memorable cast of characters with their own interesting stories and  bright and stylish visuals. As previous Segawa’s  games Star also has some disturbing themes and some areas are dark and creepy, but overall tone of the game is bright and optimistic.
2. Witch’s Heart
Tumblr media
Actually I wrote the detailed review on this game few posts ago, but  I’m still including WH in the article for those who are lazy to read that enormous wall of a text. The most notable part of the game is its plot (which is interesting to follow and full of good twists) and memorable cast of well-developed characters. Along with it WH has  entertaining  gameplay (mini-games included), great presentation and catchy soundtrack. Overall it is one of the best games I’ve ever played, so if you like rpg-horrors I suggest to at least give it a try. Game is still unfinished, currently only one ending (out of four routes) is available, but even in the present state it means about 15-20 hours of gameplay.
3. The Mystery Files of Detective Inaba No. 1, 2, 3
Tumblr media
Here goes a game trilogy about Sogo Inaba-a tsundere detective with adorable side and Nina Arimura – his energetic assistant, together they solve various cases, some of the cases are pretty normal, and others are somewhat paranormal. First game of the series is a detective with minor supernatural horror elements – some rpg-horror typical puzzles and minor chasing sequences included. Second game is purely realistic and much more simple gameplay-wise comparing to the first game. Stories in first two games resemble Agatha Christie’s detective  novels mixed with japanese psychological horrors. Third game of the series is closer to pure survival horror with minor detective elements and plays like many other rpg-horrors . To be honest, the third game is my personal favorite, since it is the most polished game out of three and the good conclusion for the Inaba and Arimura’s story. All three games are about 2 hours long and have great presentation (like quality art-style and great in-game music).
4. Asadoke no Majo
Tumblr media
Asadoke no Majo starts with our protagonist  Yui arguing with her father and as a result running away from home to …another country, where resides their old family mansion along with dark family secret and a handsome guy managing the estate as a bonus. Game is about 2 hours long and has pretty simple puzzles, minor jumpscares and several chasing scenes (but a final chase is the only frustrating one). Despite being pretty typical rpg-horror Asadoke no Majo leaves very positive impression thanks to bright cast of characters (the Nogi guy here is something else), good story and atmosphere along with well-chosen soundtrack. Currently game is available in japanese and russian.
5. Hero & Daughter
Tumblr media
H&D is a dungeon-crawler made by tachi (Headless Prisoner, Moonlight Ghost, Hello?Hell…o?), which mocking famous fantasy cliché “hero defeats a dark lord”.Our hero Ralph get his level reduced to 1 because of his arrogance, and with this permanent level 1 he is tasked to defeat the Demon Lord. Again. That’s where Ralph’s friend of the haremancer class comes to rescue. This guy can summon pretty girls (including heroines from previous tachi’s games like Erina and Akari) to help Ralph in his quest. H&D is fun and entertaining, battles are fast-pacing, dungeons are complex, visuals are nice, also game has enormous level-cap and loads of optional content and many playable characters. Plot may be simple, but H&D has good humor and characters ( even generic Ralph got a nice personality). If you like quality role-playing games I highly recommend to try it out
6. Ai korosu yori, Ai korosaretai
Tumblr media
An ordinary (alright, maybe a bit eccentric) family moves into new house. Soon after that their daughter Lucy falls with high fever. When she gets better, she discovers that her parents are gone  and various weird phenomena is occurring in the house. To find the missing parents Lucy will have to search the house and learn about its history full of mysterious disappearances and tragic events. AiAi has very interesting story (good mix of horror and sci-fi) and entertaining gameplay with interesting puzzles and action cut-ins. Also beside proceeding the story you can also do some optional stuff  like gathering collectibles and later saving runaway cows. If you like quality horror-adventures I highly recommend to try this game out. AiAi is currently available in japanese and russian.
7. Escatpade
Tumblr media
Here goes another quality game for those who is tired from horror and tragedy and wants something warm and relaxing. Escatpade  is about the girl who falls into the pit and finds herself in the weird place full of adorable talking cats. Game is nice and fun, have a bright, adorable designs and simple yet elegant puzzles. Also some items in the inventory can change appearance of our heroine (like clothes, glasses and stuffed kittycats).
8. Tower of Feles
Tumblr media
ToF made by the author of Escatpade and also full of adorable cats. But unlike Escatparade this game is slightly more challenging. ToF is an action-puzzle where your objective is save your little sister from evil witch. In order to do so you have to climb on top of the tower, solving various puzzles and avoiding witch’s servants in the process. Every floor has a time limit, and if either time runs out or your health drops to zero you’ll have to start the floor over. Game is a bit tricky and very fun to play. If you have beaten Escatpade and want more cats and cuteness- Tower of Feles is what you need.
9. Twilight Epic
Tumblr media
Twilight Epic is a sequel to Amayado Bus Stop. This time the main character is Akane’s and Akari’s cousin Akino, who  receives a call from unknown girl, who tells him about certain “promise” and right after that he finds this girl’s dead body (or not quite dead). The boy decides to find out the truth and grown-up Chitose and Akari are helping him out. Game is far more simple than its predecessor-puzzles are mostly gone and chasing scenes are pretty straightforward, but still the game is very enjoyable, since story is good and heartwarming. Also game has quality art-style and skit system similar to one in Tales series. Twilight Epic is currently available in japanese and russian.
10. Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners
Tumblr media
Peret em Heru is survival horror with rpg-elements about a group of tourists, lead by an archeologist, professor Tsuchida, exploring  ancient  ruins underneath the Great Pyramid of Giza. Needless to say, that these ruins are filled with deadly traps and Tsuchida’s intentions are far from mere scientific interest.  Gameplay resembles Sweet Home and Corpse Party –Rebuilt-, but more simple and straightforward – you play as one of the tourists,  fight monsters, grind levels,  and save your teammates from booby traps. Overall Peret em Heru is a nice game with stylish old-fashioned visuals and good music, game is about 3 hours long and have one ending, which varies depending on how many of your teammates have survived.
11. The Object
Tumblr media
You awake in the dark room in the unknown place and find out that not only your memories are gone, but your head is gone as well. On top of that  you can attach literally anything to an empty place where your head once was. Now your goal is to regain the lost memories along with the head and leave the house. Game consists from exploration and simple yet elegant puzzles, which you solve by swapping  your heads. Game is pretty interesting and  has five endings , to get all of them  you’ll  need about 30 minutes.
12. Colors: Lost Memories
Tumblr media
This time you play as a little girl who finds herself in the colorless world inhabited by talking animals. To get back home she must return this world its colors. Colors have stylish visuals highly reminiscent of old GBC games as well as unique puzzles based on using various colors you get during the game at the right places. First you can use only one color (for example red is needed to light or put out fire), later you will be able to activate up to three colors at the same time.Game is cute and fun to play, approximate time of the playthrough is one hour.
13. Nemoral
Tumblr media
Nemoral is a short game about two cops who end up in the abandoned mansion while chasing the cult followers, assuming that they have something to do with the recent disappearances of children. And this mansion hides pretty dark secret about a project based on the famous fairy tale. Nemoral is quality action-horror, where both visuals and gameplay is somewhat resemble very first Resident Evil (in the good way of course). The only con of Nemoral is anti-climatic ending (game was made for the contest, and author was short on time). But even in present state the game is still enjoyable.
14. B*x. Colorful.
Tumblr media
I’ve decided to unite both games in one mini-review, since they are both made by the same author and both are very short. B*x is about lonely girl in bunny outfit, who lives with her boyfriend, the only person who cares about her. But it seems like he’s hiding something from her. Game is about 30 minutes long and have few easy puzzles. Colorful is only 10 minutes long and have no puzzles at all, and more depressing than B*x. In Colorful you just listen to the story and watch pictures. Both games have very nice art style.

Simulator (The Vestige)
Akari settled into the simulator pod. There were advantages to being royalty and the daughter of two famous pilots. She’d grown up on stories of the Eidolon Program, and she’d known exactly what to expect when she’d signed up as a cadet. She’d already covered most of the material herself, and she was more than familiar with the engineering, software, and practical aspects of piloting. Had everything gone to plan, she would have graduated into piloting in near-record time. There was just one problem.
They hadn’t found her a co-pilot yet.
A low growl left her lips. It was beyond frustrating to do all of that hard work only to run into an obstacle that no level of talent and no amount of effort could overcome. Even with the advances in technology, the neural load was simply too much for a single pilot to bear.
Without a co-pilot, she’d been left with no choice but to continue practicing and studying until someone could be found. On the upside, they’d given her unrestricted access to the simulator pods, so she could run as many practice missions as she wanted. Fighting fal’Cie in the simulator wasn’t the same as fighting them in real life, but it was as close as she was going to get for the foreseeable future, and it took some of the sting out of being unable to put her skills to use.
When her parents had found out, they’d offered her advice in their own unique ways. Her father, of course, has very sensibly advised her to bide her time, to continue working as hard as ever so that she would be ready when a co-pilot was finally found. Her mother, the Queen of Wutai, had been a little less circumspect.
“It sucks, kiddo, but you’re not the first pilot who has had to wait. Even the grand marshal was sidelined until her sister finally graduated. Just keeping working. You’ll get your shot at the fal’Cie soon enough.”
Yuffie Kisaragi was many things, but subtle was not one of them. But, as usual, her mother was right. Grand Marshal Farron had set records in basically every conceivable category of the training program, and most of them still stood years later. But even she had been forced to wait for a co-pilot. Akari, therefore, could do no less. If it was good enough for the grand marshal, it was good enough for her.
As the simulator pod whirred to life, Akari smiled. Here, at least, in the heat of battle, she could let go of her worries. The future would take care of itself. She just needed to be ready for when it did.
Averia ignored the stares from the cadets as she made her way toward the simulator pods. Diana’s final exams were in a fortnight, but she had zero doubt that her sister would pass them with flying colours. Diana was more than qualified to be a pilot, a technician, a mechanic, or even part of the research and development team. And in the unlikely event that she somehow managed to fail, the honest truth was they’d probably just throw her into makeup exams until she passed.
Eidolon pilots were in short supply, and Averia was one of the best. They could not afford to leave her without a co-pilot for long, and with Claire being reassigned, that just left Diana.
Still, being out of the Conn-Pod for this long was leaving her a little... restless. It might be good to stretch her metaphorical legs in a simulation. Of course, she should have known she’d draw attention. The cadets were always eager to interact with the pilots, and Averia was only a few years older than most of them. She’d make time for a bit of interaction later, though. Right now, she just wanted to fight something.
“Damn... Kisaragi is killing everyone again.”
“She’s a machine.”
“Hey, at least Wallace actually did some damage. Hell, she might even have won if she’d guessed right at the end there.”
Averia’s brows furrowed. Kisaragi? She knew that name. Everyone did. Yuffie Kisaragi and her husband, Vincent Valentine, had served with great distinction in the First Breach War and continued to serve with great distinction in the ongoing Second Breach War. She’d been lucky enough to run a mission alongside them with Claire. The pair had been incredibly skilled, easy to work with, and simply excellent all around. Well, apart from the teasing. The queen had a tendency to tease her husband without bothering to mute her comms. Averia still wasn’t sure if that was by accident or on purpose.
This couldn’t be them. Neither Yuffie or Vincent would bother fighting against some cadets in the simulator. It wouldn’t be fair. It would be like throwing a lion in against a baby gazelle. Talented or not, there was no substitute for experience, and Yuffie and Vincent were both talented and experienced.
“You said Kisaragi,” Averia asked a nearby cadet. “Who is that?”
The cadet snapped to attention. “Ma’am!” He flashed her a quick salute. “Um... Akari Kisaragi, ma’am. She’s the daughter of Queen Yuffie and Colonel Valentine.”
“Ah.” That explained it. Averia’s gaze flicked to one of the screens showing what was happening inside the simulation. It was Eidolon vs Eidolon combat, and there was no mistaking the carnage an upgraded Chaos was wreaking against an upgraded Bahamut. “She’s good.”
The cadet nodded. “She’s top of the class in simulator performance, ma’am, and near the top in everything else too. She just doesn’t have a co-pilot yet.”
“Interesting.” Averia’s lips twitched. If the score at the bottom was accurate, Akari had won eight matches in a row. “Do you think anyone would mind if I cut in line?”
That got the attention of the other cadets.
“You’re going to fight her, ma’am?” the cadet asked.
Averia grinned mischievously. “She’s good. I’ve fought alongside her parents. I want to see how she compares.” She glanced up as the defeated Bahamut exploded in a comical burst of confetti and streams. She was fairly confident her Aunt Vanille had implemented that since nobody actually wanted to see an Eidolon explode.
Akari took a few deep breaths to steady herself. A thin sheen of sweat covered her skin, and the suit clung to her body. However, she didn’t feel tired at all. If anything, she felt more alive than she had all week. Combat was a thrill, and testing herself against the best the training program had to offer was even better. Her eight victories in a row had not all come easily. Two of those matches could easily have gone against her if her opponents had seen through the traps she’d set for them.
As the simulator began to load her next opponent, she wondered who it would be and which Eidolon they would pick. As was her custom, she usually used her parents’ Eidolon, Chaos, since she was most familiar with its weapons. The simulation’s black loading screen gave way to the more elaborate setting of a city. Visible over the ruins of some buildings was her opponent.
She smiled.
Her opponent had picked Odin.
Akari hissed as her plasma shot went just wide. The brilliant beam grazed her opponent’s shoulder, and she readied Chaos’s claws. Her opponent was fast - faster than anyone she’d ever seen using Odin. She couldn’t help but wonder who it was. Although everyone who used Odin had theoretical access to his maximum speed, actually using it required extremely high neural-kinetics because controlling the Eidolon fluently enough to move that quickly was exceedingly difficult, even in the simulator.
With a growl, she lunged forward. Chaos’s claw was capable of puncturing even the toughest of armour with ease, and once she had her opponent pinned on it, she could finish them off with her plasma cannon. The shotgun mode of the plasma cannon was perfect for close quarter combat, and even a single clean hit was enough to substantially damage or even disable another Eidolon.
She missed by a hair’s breadth again, and her opponent twisted into her blindspot. Akari had a split-second to realise how much trouble she was in before a colossal impact rocked Chaos. Whoever was using Odin must have deployed the elbow rockets. Alarms flashed throughout the simulator pod indicating the damage she’d sustained. They were soon joined by more as her staggering Eidolon was struck by another rocket-enhanced blow.
Akari tried to bring Chaos around to face her opponent, but Odin simply circled away, always keeping just out of sight and reach as blow after blow landed. She bit back a curse. It was like fighting a damn ghost. Desperately, she leapt back to try to put some distance between them only for Odin’s shoulder to ram into Chaos’s chest. Her leap back turned into an ungainly sprawl.
Looking up at her foe, she got to see the Blazefire Sabre unfurl right before it thundered down toward her. She rolled to one side, and the blade smashed through a build and carved a trench in the ground. This was her chance! With her opponent’s weapon stuck in the ground, they should be vulnerable.
Or not.
Her opponent had let go of the Blazefire Sabre and picked up a piece of the broken building. The massive lump of concrete and rebar turned into a precisely thrown projectile that struck her plasma cannon and jammed it. The weapon almost backfired before its emergency setting kicked in and shut it down before it could explode. However, that gave her opponent the time they needed to yank the Blazefire Sabre free.
“Oh crap...” Chaos’s claw was an excellent melee weapon. It was not, however, designed to fight someone using a giant sword.
Akari stumbled out of her simulator pod. It was customary amongst the cadets for the winner to stay on during sessions like these. She had lost, so it was time for her to give up her spot in the pod, but she at least wanted to know who’d beaten her. Maybe it was one of the new transfer students? She hadn’t had a chance to face any of the transfer students yet.
Indeed, she hoped it was one of them. Her defeat had been thorough, but that only motivated her. There was clearly a long way for her to go, and such journeys were always best undertaken with others. With a suitable rival, she could continue to push herself to excel.
“Not bad.”
Akari stopped and stared. The person climbing out of the other simulator pod was not one of the other students.
“You...”
Averia Yun-Farron held one hand out. “Well fought. I’m impressed you lasted as long as you did, cadet.”
“Oh.” Akari numbly reached out and shook Averia’s hand. The pink-haired young woman was one of the rising stars of the Eidolon Program. Averia had regularly been compared to both of her parents, and she had somehow not come up short in the comparison, which spoke volumes of her ability. “Thanks.”
Averia smiled faintly. “You might want to work on your subtle positioning though. Chaos is one of the most mobile Eidolons, but against a quick opponent, you’ll need to learn how to make small adjustments, taking a glancing hit here and there, instead of just trying to retreat out of range. Getting back is a good idea most of the time, and Chaos has the weapons to dominate at mid to long range, but some of your opponents will be fast enough to punish back-pedalling.”
“...” Akari nodded slowly, still a little stunned. “I’ll... I’ll work on it.”
Averia turned. “It was a good match. I know you’re still waiting for a co-pilot, and it’ll be a couple of weeks before mine graduates. Let me know if you want another match.”
“I... I will!”
That was the first time they fought in the simulator, but it would not be the last. Not by a long shot.

Author’s Notes
Akari is a chip off the old block. Yuffie and Vincent were excellent pilots, and she’s cut of the same cloth. She just needs a co-pilot. Meanwhile, Averia is trying to keep herself occupied until she can be back on active duty.

Anime I would Love to See Another Season Of
There is a few anime that I was sad to see go. For the record I am also a fan of their respective manga’s, in fact these series manga are still being produced. Here is a short list of Anime I would like to see another season of.
March Comes in Like a Lion (San Gatsu no Lion)
I have written about this series since it is one of my favorites, but it is also at the top of the list of the many series I would love to see another season of. There is a lot of content to use for animation purposes, the Manga series, about 13 volumes in Tank-o-ban to be exact, and the 2-season run covered to volume 9 chapter 89. There are more than 4 volumes available, and the manga is still in production. So, there is more than enough material for at least another 13-episode season if not another 24 episodes.
Here is a bit about the series from Wikipedia:
Tumblr media
The series is set in Tokyo, following the everyday life of a 17-year-old shōgi player, Rei (lit. "Zero"). Umino based the setting of March Comes in like a Lion on research she conducted herself, whereas she was already familiar with the setting for her earlier work, Honey and Clover.
Rei is a 17-year-old professional shōgi player who lives by himself. He is estranged from his family and has scarcely any friends. Among his acquaintances is a family which consists of a young woman—Akari Kawamoto—and her younger sisters—Hinata and Momo—who also keep several cats. As the story progresses, Rei deals with his maturing as a player and as a person, while developing his relationships with others, especially the Kawamoto sisters. -- Wikipedia.
Welcome to the Ballroom
I have also written about this series a couple of times. I love the teen angst, and the struggle of the main character to find something he wants to do with his life and a girl he wants to be with, and how he finds dance, and learns what he wants to do with his life. It’s kind of a nostalgic, and fun story with a bit of romance mixed in. If a second season were to happen; it would be in a couple years.
Here is a bit about the series from Wikipedia
Tumblr media
Third-year middle school student Tatara Fujita is a guy who has no plans for his future or dreams, but tries to find something he can pursue with his whole life. With him being bullied and extorted, he is saved from delinquents by a man named Kaname Sengoku, a motorcycle-riding dance instructor. Tatara is entered into the Ogasawara Dance Studio in which he is shown the ropes of the world of Competitive Ballroom Dancing. -- Wikipedia
Silver Spoon
A kid fails under the pressure applied by his father over his academic and professional future, so he enrolls in an agricultural school far away from home where he begins to find what it is he wants to be (both as an occupation, and as a man). Again, there is a bit of teen angst, a little romance, and a lot of education in food, and what farming is. After the anime concluded the story continues and there there were several volumes of the manga series. So, there is enough content to animate another season (or two for that matter).
Here is a bit about the series from Wikipedia
Tumblr media
After failing to pass the entrance examination for the high school he plans to attend, mild-mannered student Yuugo Hachiken moves away from his suburban lifestyle and enrolls at Ooezo Agricultural High School – often abbreviated as Ezonō (エゾノー, lit. "Ezo Agricultural") – in the countryside. His relationship with his family is strained at the start of the story, which influences his decision to attend a school far from home. He continues to worry about his future career over the course of the series. He soon finds himself slowly getting used to his new environment despite some initial struggles, and grows into an empathetic and compassionate individual as he struggles to understand the world of agriculture and how it affects the lives of his new friends. – Wikipedia
Conclusion
These were great anime that were well received. The animation style was great, and the stories were compelling, and as anime series I feel they deserve another season, and I hope it happens eventually.

BECAUSE I’M NOT POPULAR, I’LL READ WATAMOTE: CHAPTER #112
In the latest chapter of Watamote, love is in the air! Okay, not really. But what we do get is still more than enough to make my heart flutter. And it’s not just because we got that Yuri Tamura characterization I’ve been waiting for. It’s because it’s the first part of the Valentine’s Day “arc”. Which means it’s time to see all the confessions, love letters, and romcom cliches that will most definitely NOT be happening in Tomoko’s life.
Chapter 112: Because I'm Not Popular, I'll Enjoy Valentine's Day (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Only in the fanfics, Tomoko.
Tumblr media
Okay, this is actually pretty prominent. Until now, I wouldn’t have blamed anyone for thinking that Tomoko was serious about calling Mako a lesbian. But right here, it’s confirmed that she really was just joking. But that raises the question: When Tomoko makes claims like this, how much of it is just a joke, and how much of it isactually serious? Given Tomoko’s eccentricities, it’s hard to tell sometimes. Does she actually think Yuu is a “slut”? Does she actually think Yoshida is a “delinquent”? Just how self-aware is Tomoko, anyway?
Tumblr media
I know that this is a mistranslation and that Tomoko is actually commenting about how Yuri’s chocolate from Mako looks better than hers. I mean, that makes sense, given than Yuri and Mako are lesbos besties and all.
Tumblr media
All the girls except you, Yuri? Does that imply she’s not as outwardly affectionate as the other girls? Nice use of subtle characterization.
Sometimes I feel that the word “platonic” is not in Tomoko’s dictionary.
Tumblr media
And there it is! It’s been long suggested that Yuri doesn’t really have any other friends other than Mako, but this is first time it’s been explicitly stated in the series. The more I think about it, Tomoko and Yuri are actually pretty similar. They each have that one friend they hang out with (Yuu and Mako, respectively), but are otherwise pretty reserved. Hmm, maybe it really was fate after all, Yuri.
Tumblr media
I know I’m not the only one who noticed that focus on this shot. And as others have guessed, it may have been Yoshida putting chocolates in Tomoko’s desk. The girl in the previous panel did look like her from the back, but I’m going to hold off from that judgment until it’s confirmed or not in the next chapter.
Tumblr media
Enter the pervert sisters. You know, I think that if Yuri wasn’t there, Tomoko would have acknowledged them more openly. So why did she lie? Well, I think it’s because Tomoko tends to incite conflict when both Komiyama and Akari are around, so she probably doesn’t want to look bad in front of Yuri. Gotta maintain that air of “maturity”, amirite Tomoko?
Tumblr media
Even though she wasn’t planning to make any until now, I guess even Tomoko has some standards about the exchange of Valentine’s Day chocolate. Or perhaps it’s not so much as having standards than Tomoko putting too much stock in the “proper” way of making chocolates. Yuri seems more lenient in comparison, though I think that’s just her being more practical than Tomoko in this case.
Tumblr media
When in doubt, Google it.
Tumblr media
As usual, Nico Tanigawa are excellent in delivering scenes with little to no dialogue. At first glance, these three panels are just Tomoko and Yuri going through the recipe. But there’s quite a lot of implicit characterization to be found in this sequence. This is unfamiliar territory for both of them, yet neither shows any signs of anxiousness. There’s this quiet diligence between the two that you often find when introverts work together. And despite being in close proximity with each other, it’s very clear that there’s this “comfort zone” that they share.
Tumblr media
That’s what she said.
Tumblr media
I think that Tomoko is actually thinking the same thing Yuri is to an extent. As forcing small talk is the bane of introverts, the relationship between Tomoko and Yuri is probably the healthiest relationship we’ve seen thus far (except for perhaps Tomoko and Yuu). Neither feels obligated to try any harder than necessary, and they are quite receptive to each other’s quiet demeanors. And as for what “all this” is referring to, I believe it’s the act of being explicitly friendly with each other for the first time. It clearly has a big impact on them both, and given how easygoing it seems so far, I’d call it a success,
Tumblr media
One thing I appreciate in this chapter that while they’re giving Yuri more characterization, it doesn’t really change anything that was already established about her. While her more “loner” attributes are more apparent here, it’s still connected to her personality as the “plain jane” who often has her earbuds on. And what makes it work even better is that her relationship with Mako actually supports this side of Yuri’s personality. Impressive.
Tumblr media
I didn’t realize it until way later that Tomoko and Yuri’s chocolates reflect their respective personalities. I wonder if the idea of making Yuri more flashy is something Nico Tanigawa considered when they first developed her character?
Tumblr media
I find it both disturbing and amusing that Yuri knows Tomoko’s personality enough to correctly guess that she would do something like making chocolate crap. And as we know, Yuri, to her credit, has grown accustomed to this.
Tumblr media
Tomoko’s casual harrassment of Yuu-chan still baffles me sometimes.
Tumblr media
Name-dropping everyone’s favorite delinquent.
Tomoko’s comment on the lack of excitement in giving chocolates to supposed lesbians suggests that perhaps she is not actually a lesbian herself, though one could easily argue against that. Rather, I’d like to look at it from a different angle. I think this comment actually speaks to Tomoko’s self-awareness on her own undesirability. It’s a logic akin to “even lesbians wouldn’t be interested in me”. Speaking of which, I find it interesting that Tomoko never considers the possibility of others viewing her as a lesbian. Being as well-informed as Tomoko is, you’d think she would.
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, I actually went “AWWWW!” out loud when this happened. I think the fact that a gag manga can make me feel like a dad proud of their introverted daughter making friends is a testament to how good it is.
Don’t think I didn’t notice that Yuri stammered a bit when she said “friends”. I don’t believe it means Yuri isn’t genuine with their friendship, but speaking from experience, I understand the difficulty of calling somebody your “friend’ for the first time. It’s a bold declaration, especially for people who don’t have many friends to begin with. However, that also means that since Yuri managed to say it, her friendship with Tomoko is actually meaningful to her.
AWWWW!
Tumblr media
Small victories...small victories.
Tumblr media
Emojis from Emoji-girl? Mangaka plz.
Tumblr media
coughtsundereucchicough.
Unless I’m wrong about how shoe lockers work in Japan, let’s look at what just happened here. Ucchi had leftover chocolate, looked in Tomoko’s locker, actually went to the trouble of looking for her, then put chocolate in the girl’s locker with a letter explaining herself. Actually, this whole letter reads like one big rationalization.
For someone who claims to not want Tomoko pining after her, Ucchi isn’t exactly making herself distant, is she?
Tumblr media
Tomoko’s reasoning actually says a lot about how she views herself in regards to how she influences those around her. That being, not much. She mostly got into the whole “making chocolates” thing because she felt so distant from everyone that she could pass it off as a joke. As we see in this chapter, that’s no longer the case. She has people that take her relatively seriously, and Tomoko still hasn’t caught up in the reality that her life is kind of okay, so to speak. Hopefully she’ll reach that epiphany someday.
Tumblr media
I feel you, Tomoki. Don’t give your sister any leverage. Though admit it, we all know at least two people gave you chocolates, right?
Tumblr media
Never change. Tomoko. Never change.
So yeah, this wasn’t exactly the most romantic Valentine’s Day ever, but honestly, this is far beyond what I would’ve expected from the start of the series. Most manga use Valentine’s day as a vehicle for romantic milestones. You know, confessions and all that. And while now of that happens here, it’s still a milestone in Tomoko’s growth. She hung out with someone with zero repercussions, officially became Yuri’s friend, and got chocolates out of it all.
And to think, this is only the first part.

Ace, fishing with Seven and Taro: Well, we’re having a great adult outing, now aren’t we?
UltraSeven: Of course, and it was such a good idea to leave my son to babysit the kids.
Taro: What could possibly go wrong?
Meanwhile…
Fuma, from the roof:  WATCH ME DO A BACKFLIP!
Akari, piling up boxes and pillows for Fuma to land on: this is gonna be soo sick!
Taiga, holding a magazine with a bikini clad lady on the cover: Cousin Zero, why does this book say “Cheesecake” when it’s just pictures of ladies?... And why does my dad have so many of them?
[Nieve meanwhile is throwing expensive knickknacks and furniture at Titas who deflects them with his muscles; causing them to bounce in random directions, putting holes in the wall and breaking them on impact.]
Z: Hey Zero I found this neat game but I needed money to keep playing it so I used your dad’s credit card....
Zero:...…
Zero, sipping his sixth energy drink of the day: This is fine.

[Akari and the Tri-squad are up on a hill fooling around with a large tire they found, Akari was inside of the thing while the guys took turns rolling the tire to each other, when one of the teenage ultras got the bright idea to roll it down the hill assuming it would stop in the ditch at the bottom.]
Fuma: Alright, let’s do it!
Taiga, to his cousin: Keep your limbs in the tire at all times Ari!
[The guys let go of the tire watching it gain more speed as it goes down the hill...Meanwhile at the same time Zero was walking just below the hill and saw something coming towards him at a fast pace! He quickly side-steps just as the tire overshot the ditch; bounced in front of him missing his body by a hair, Zero then watched it fly straight into the pond on the other side of the road.]
Zero: What in the frak?!
{He looks up at the top of the hill where the Tri-squad are standing; staring at the pond with these freak out expressions. Zero looks over at the pond just as as Akari broke the waters surface, she sees the squad and her baffled brother watching her.]
Akari, throws her arms in the air: Yeeeahhh! Let’s do it again!
{The tri-squad cheers as she pulls the tire out of the pound rolls it back up the hill.]
Taiga: I’m going next!
Fuma, shoves him: Screw that! I’m next!
Titas, pushing them both out of the way: I found the tire, I’m next!
Zero: Are you all outta your frakin’ minds??
{Everyone freezes as Zero makes his way up the hill looking very upset}
Zero: I’m older than you, I’m next.

{Zoffy learns his daughter is not a good cook (she good at baking but is bad at cooking, usually it’s Mile or Commander Sato (male oc.) who handle the UFG’s cooking or hand out MREs, Nayaka sees Shin (Zero), Akari giving Zoffy a tour of the crater base and stops them.]
Nayaka: Oh hey, can one of you taste this for me?
{She holds out a bowl filled with a greenish brown foul smelling liquid.]
Akari, grimacing: What is it?
Nayaka: It’s a sweet n’ sour sauce, I got the recipe from a old cookbook.
{Shin and Akari look at each other and wince.]
Shin: Well, we kind of got somewhere to be, but I think Zoffy would be happy to try it, being your father all, Right sis?
Akari, strained voice: Right.
Zoffy, confused: Wait, what is....
(He jumps hearing the mess hall door slam, Akari and Shin are nowhere to be found.)
{Zoffy looks behind him astonished that Akari and Shin’s speedy escape, He then turns back to a hopeful Nayaka with an unsure expression... Zoffy winces as he takes the spoon from her and tastes the sauce.}
Zoffy, grimacing trying not to gag.: Oh-Um....You got the sour part right...
[Nayaka’s smile drops as she stares down at the book perplexed.]
Nayaka: Hmmm... Maybe I shouldn’t have substituted the apple cider with grape juice...
{Zoffy shudders as his daughter goes back into the kitchen, he made a note to ask Mebius if he could teach Nayaka how to cook.]

Akari, sees someone hiding in the guard kiosk: Hold on a second.
Glenfire: Why?
Akari: Just trust me.
Akari, knocks on guard kiosk window: Hello?
(The guard warily peeks out from under their desk.)
Akari: Could you please open the gate?
[The terrified guard’s hand comes up from under the desk and hits the open gate button.]
Akari: Thank-you.
Guard through the speaker: Please leave...
{Glenfire and Akari walk through the gates.]
Glenfire, pouting: ...I could have done that.

[Zero gets called to an amusement park for a family emergency, he finds his dad in the security room detained with his sister and their cousin in mascot suit talking to the guards trying to convince them to let them go.]
Zero, unfazed seeing his dad in handcuffs: Hi, dad.
Seven: Hi, son. I'm a political prisoner. How's your day been?
Zero, winces: It's been better...*to his sister* What happened?
Akari: Dad, kicked a park mascot in the butt for being too huggy with me...turns out it was Jack's son.
Jack's son, sitting on an ice pack: As I was telling the guards. I got excited cos I haven't seen you guys in a while; I just wanted to give my baby cousin a hug!
Seven: This whole could've been avoided if you had told us who you were beforehand; instead just randomly running up and grabbing Akari from behind causing her to scream.
Jack's son, rubbing his butt: Yeah, I know that now...
[The mascot costume is giant version of the Ultra-plushies, Jack's son got a summer job at the amusement park as he saving up money to buy his crush a gift.}
