“Migi to Dali” The Announces Supporting Cast

The official website announced three new cast members for the television anime version of Nami Sano's Migi to Dali (Migi and Dali) manga.

Migi & Dali Character Analysis Pt. 2

This is the second part of my exploration of the characters where I describe them and provide their significance in the story. As always, spoilers are given.

This post will be about the other side characters, including the Be Birds and the minor members of the Ichijo family.

Akira Ichijo: He is the patriarch of the Ichijo family and the father of the twins, Eiji, and Karen(?), and is a well-respected psychiatrist in Origon Village. However, he is also surprisingly dense and oblivious, as he was easily tricked into having an affair with Metry, and he never noticed his family's issues before it was too late. His character is also questionable (putting it nicely), since he chose to pursue Metry after finding out about their affair, even though he was already married. This might also be the reason why Reiko does not hire any young housekeepers. Hence, he could be seen as partly responsible for the twins' dark past and childhood.

Nonetheless, Akira does seem like he generally tries to do the right thing, as he genuinely cared about Eiji during the Ichijo house fire and when Eiji is arrested. It's likely that he feels a great deal of guilt and responsibility for enabling Reiko due to his ignorance. However, one thing that was left unknown was the relationship between him and his other two sons. I'd like to think that he found out at some point, though he felt that he had no right to call them his sons, especially since they already had a new family.

Karen Ichijo: She is the daughter of the Ichijo family as well as Eiji's sister, and a good piano player. On the outside, she seems like a sweet and innocent young girl, but she knows a lot more and is more calculating than she lets on, as she seemed to understand flag-signaling, Morse code, rope tying, and most importantly Reiko's true nature as well as her dark designs.

She tries her best to help whoever is willing to resist Reiko, since she saved Micchan, helped Migi escape Reiko, and helped the Be Birds with their plan to expose her. However, without any allies such as the Be Birds or Micchan, she is unlikely to act on her own, as she knows how formidable Reiko is. Thus, in this regard she can be seen as a damsel in distress, and it isn't until Maruta arrives until she is "saved" and becomes his girlfriend.

Maruta Tsutsumi: He is a boy that is the same age as the twins, and is rather short and overweight. He's also rather quick-witted, knowledgeable in boys scouts skills, somewhat of a tech savant, and is really into beavers. On the outside, he seems like a nice boy who really loves his mother, but he can be quite mean-spirited and abusive, as he tricked Hitori into coming over to his house so that he could treat him as his servant, which could be seen as a metaphor for Migi's subordination to Dali.

Although Maruta did not appear in the story nearly as much as Akiyama, it can be inferred that Maruta was insecure and likely was also an outcast like the other Be Birds. For example, he could only participate in the Halloween contest with his mother and grandmother, and Akiyama stated that Maruta was just looking for friends, which was proven by how desperate Maruta was to help Akiyama and the twins and how dedicated he was to exposing Reiko. Indeed, once he overcame his own insecurities, Maruta was shown to be a decent and loyal boy, and was shown to be quite the romantic.

Shunpei Akiyama: He is a boy that is the same age as the twins, their first friend, and is a rather tall boy with glasses. He seems to have a strong fascination with birds, flight, and airplanes to the point where his sister thinks of him as a nerd, and most of his peers see him as weird. At first, he was isolated as a social outcast because of his hobbies, but seeing Hitori's courage and resolve at boy scouts has motivated him to open up, and Hitori's (Dali's) visit to his house has allowed him to accept himself. Ironically, it was the twins (especially Dali) that needed help accepting themselves as well as a companion they could open themselves up to.

Once Akiyama overcame his insecurities, he became a steadfast and loyal friend to the twins, as he would always enthusiastically hang out with Hitori and listen to his problems, and he even rescued them from the Ichijo house fire. When Migi ran away from Dali after being betrayed, Akiyama was there to help him. HIs kindness and loyalty towards Hitori was strong enough that Migi was able to open up to him, and later Dali as well. He also has integrity and a strong moral character, as he told Migi to go visit Eiji after the latter saved the former, and he assured Migi that Maruta was just trying to be friends with him. Truly, Akiyama helped the twins open and up and socially adjust, and in particular was an important part of Migi's growth and character development in the story.

On the translation: I’m aiming for a more direct, “Japanese-sounding” translation to share the mood of the content more as it is. This will probably cause some sentences to appear weird in English.

On Fuji’s style of speech: he uses a lot of little additions that soften the tone, and most of them are pretty hard to include in English. In general his style of speech is a balance of casual but polite.

I’m still working on Japanese, so there might be mistakes. Please let me know if you spot any translation errors so I can fix them here!

So, from now on too, I will follow the guidepost I’ve found by myself, and am aiming to go beyond my limits.

During the camp and on off days, what do you do for a change of pace?

I guess the main one would be taking pictures. Especially on an overseas trip like this, taking a lot of pictures of sights I don’t usually see arouses my creativity.

Since coming to Australia, what kind of pictures have you taken?

When you go a bit outwards, there’s a desert, so I’ve taken a lot of pictures of cacti. But though you may say “cacti” in one word, there are tall ones, types that have a form that is round like a tennis ball, and so on - there are many different kinds. Besides that, I took pictures of koalas. Tanegashima-san recommended a good place to me… I could even hold them in my arms, so I had fun. What I’m thinking I most want to photograph next is the starry sky. Since it’s the Southern hemisphere, the scenery of the night sky totally differs from the sky in Japan. The Southern Cross, or capturing the Milky Way - I’d really like to take such pictures.

Do you show the pictures you take to someone?

I often send them to family and friends. I sent a lot of pictures of the koalas to my brother Yuuta, fufufu. It seems my sister likes cacti of weird shapes.

I think the fans also really want to see Fuji-san’s pictures.

I brought many with me today, so sure. I’d be happy if people would like them.

In Australia When I find the time within the U-17 tournament, I take pictures little by little. Don’t you think this koala looks like Yuuta?

Cacti We often go for walks together. Even if it’s a familiar scenery, it becomes fun when cacti are around. 

Family trip A camera is a magical tool that can cut out a scene that will not happen again. I can’t miss doing that when I’m traveling.

Fashion

Fuji really likes knits! Are you wearing the hat with ears that I gave you? (Kikumaru)

I’m not that interested, but protection against cold is important. It’s good to warm your body properly with a stole. (Ochi)
