I can't keep to a schedule; it's fine. Last time I did a fish explained, we did the Skipjack Tuna, and I decided to knock the other tuna out today as well. This one rivals the Bluefin Tuna we covered a long, long time ago, in size, beauty, and ferocity...as well as in its number of friends.

The Yellowfin Tuna appeared in AC Pocket Camp in May 2021 during Fishing Tourney #38, the "sushi" themed one. Like other big fish, it was quite rare. Now, IRL the Yellowfin Tuna is considered "Least Concern" - its populations are stated to be recovering according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), so it was bumped down from Vulnerable to Least Concern just last Fall. It being rare in Pocket Camp probably has more to do with its worth, size, and the fact that it is more of an open ocean fish, and doesn't often come close to shore.

The Yellowfin is named to species - Thunnus albacares - one of the largest members of the true tunas within family Scombridae. They can grow to lengths pushing 7+ feet (2.1+ m) and weigh 440 lbs. (200 kg) or more. This is still smaller than most Bluefin species, but it's still a formidable size when you think people actively sportfish for it. Still, they are picked off quickly by other predators when they are small. As adults, they only fall prey to larger predators, such a toothed whales, big sharks, and marlin. Yellowfin typically enjoy warm temperate to tropical surface waters around the world. They are probably the most beautiful of the tunas (IMHO) with their long, golden dorsal and anal fins that can be very long and trailing on the oldest individuals.

Now, one thing we haven't spoken about yet concerning tuna is their association with other species. Lots of large tuna species will still school despite being enormous - it helps with hunting. Yellow- and Blue- fin tunas love to associate with different species of dolphins, which makes tuna fishing difficult. Unless you're fishing pole-and-line (aka just a fishing rod and your wits), dolphins are always in danger during tuna fishing operations. Yellowfin in particular will school underneath pods of dolphins as both species seek out dinner, which often translates to both tuna and dolphins trapped in the same net. Although the dolphins must be released, there's always the possibility of panic and drowning for them. Dolphins aren't the only friends yellowfin tuna will incorporate into their schools - other species of tuna, including skipjacks and bigeye tunas, as well as whale sharks, and larger species of whales (that won't eat them), are all common companions of this friendly fish.
