As a last Hansel and Gretel post for now, after the long analysis of the Katsuhiro's manga, I want to share with you a little webcomic I didn't know existed until @svnrise-parabellvm shared it with me.
This is, like Katsuhiro's manga, a dark take on Hansel and Gretel... But not a fun one.
Called "Gingerbread Houses", it was created by Alexander Danner (with art by Edward J. Grug) and posted on five chapters, with the explicit goal of the story being to explore the aftermaths of the original fairytale, with a focus on the kind of psychological trauma such an experience can inflict onto children. Yes, it is not a funny take on the story. And yet.. it does have a dry, dark humor to it.
If you want to check out the comic, the list of its chapters is here:
https://twentysevenletters.com/comics/gingerbread-houses/
The five chapters in total being...
"Place Settings", about what the parents did while the kids were away.
Tumblr media
"A Full Belly", about Hansel's time while trapped in his fattening prison, and how Gretel pushed the witch in the oven
Tumblr media
"Table Manners", about what happened when the kids returned home
Tumblr media
"Crumbs", about the aftermaths of the woodman's wife's death
Tumblr media
And "Cornucopia", about... Well let's not spoil it

In 323 BCE, Alexander the Great begins to fear.
Fearing the destruction of his pothos — his longing for life, ambition, and eternal conquest — from old age, Alexander embarks on a quest for the elusive Water of Life while accompanied by his wisest, most trustworthy Servant.
As they experience a series of countless fabulous wonders, including glass submarines, naked philosophers, Amazonians, and talking prophetic trees, Alexander confronts his complex legacy and reflects on the life and deeds that will cement his transformation into one of the most unforgettable figures in world history. "How did you get in my tend?" "Same way I beated your ass on the Vitastā." "Except, you didn't." "I would have, if you hadn't had a whole army and Porus had moved his ass five minutes earlier as I told him." "You're impossible." "The ox says the kettle's black…" "Didn't you hate me?" "You're hateful. And, interesting. For a mortal." "I am deeply flattered that such a prized member of Mighty Shiva's retinue values me so." "You're awful at playing humble. And your pronunciation of Persian is horrible, shut up." "Make me." "Take that armour away and I might."

Young Shahra had a thing for the "Clever bitchy asshole" as she would call him (affectionately). But hey, what happened in Punjab stays in Punjab, right? Couple of notes: Alexander's breastplate is based on a reconstruction by hellenicarmours to whom goes my deepest thanks for the clear explanations and detailed photos. Shahra's attire is based on a reference that I found badly dated and it's to be redone because it's actually much later than it should be. Sigh. Bear with me, you'll have another version.
Till Queendom Come is a project about an Indian Rakshasi who’s trying to find her lost heart after the East India Company stole it, a Jotunn who didn’t feel like going back to Norway after the Vikings invasions, and the youngest granddaughter of the last druid of St. Ives who’s now trying to keep on the family tradition on her own in spite of being the wrong gender to do so. Started as a project set in Edwardian England, born in a urge of sudden irritation about seeing Victoria being romanticised everywhere by a cynical comic artist who majored in English. You can read it or on Webtoon!

Concept sketches for Alex and Eta. Some characters in the comic refer to Hephaistíon as “Eta” for short. Eta is simply the first letter of his name, in Greek. It’s like calling someone named Justin, “Jay” for short. Hephaistíon is a cool name, but it’s a bit of a mouthful and can be a lot to cram into speech bubbles.
There are a fair amount of varying descriptions of Alexander the Great left to us by history. For my take on the legendary Macedonian I tried to take some of the most striking features I’d read him described with, such as the dichromatic eyes, redness of face and chest, and strawberry blond hair, and incorporate them into his design. The spiky hair is less of nod to history and more of a nod to anime tropes. Spiky hair just gives off anime protagonist energy to me, and Alexander the Great was pretty much the anime protagonist of his time.
Alex’s design being a mishmash of striking features also plays into Eta’s design choice as well. There is a story of queen who, upon seeing Alexander and Hephaistíon together, mistook Hephaistíon for Alexander, because Hephaistíon was the taller and more handsome of the two. So going off of that story, my goal for Eta’s design was to make him taller and more conventionally handsome in comparison to his lover.

✨ ANNOUNCEMENT
Thank you everyone who waited during the hiatus (a hiatus prompted by postgraduate studies RIP)! I'm excited to announce that Book Two is DROPPING SOON!!
Tumblr media
The tentative date is at the end of this month, as soon as I settle down from travelling for a book tour and Lunar New Year family / birthday* shenanigans. Book Two is going to be a wild one, and will be the start of all the ambitious visual and narrative promises I hinted at in Book One. It will be a slow, one page a week update until I get my bearings.
*it's also my birthday today :p (Feb 15)
Alexander, the Servant & the Water of Life is an award-winning adult historical webcomic and graphic novel about the life and legends of Alexander the Great. Fearing death, Alexander embarks on the quest for immortality, alongside a mysterious servant. Book Two: Katabasis Alexander the Great is led through a mysterious jungle of memory by a strange and haughty deity, encountering the many ghosts of his past in the years before he became king.
Book One: The Hero's Journey is completed and available to read for free online, or for a price in PDF and deluxe hardcover in English and French.

- The Alex Show 2: Goliath
[<PREVIOUS][NEXT>]
More pages for the Alex show! Say hello to Goliath!
We can't get enough of Gargoyles comics... so we're making some ourselves, but centered around Alexander Fox Xanatos (which is shown very little in the official comics) XD
Without preparatory drawings, without writing a plot, everything improvised and drawn directly with ballpoint pen on a tiny sketchbook, while we are in line at the post office or at the doctor, on the bus or outside, to "optimize" our free time. So it's going to be all wonky and buggy, but hey, it's just for fun!
(Maybe, if this series becomes long enough, we could post it on Tapas and draw a cover for it!)
TL;DR: We want more Gargoyles comics, but we don't have time to draw or write them properly, so we'll sketch them. Also, you can read them even if you don't know Gargoyles, we're going to introduce all the characters!
[Oh, and a lot more of our Gargoyles fanarts: Here’s the Gargoyles tag on tumblr!]

Can't wait to see my "twin" on Christmas Day! 🎄
I am super excited to watch my unofficial twin/boyfriend Adrian's actor Matthew Goode as C.S. Lewis in a debate with Anthony Hopkins as Sigmund Freud about the existence of God in Freud's Last Session on Christmas Day with my brothers and sister-in-law. I am a Christian, I go to a Presbyterian church, and I am working towards Baptism, so this has greatly piqued my curiosity, this subject matter of the movie i mean, and i feel honoured getting to see my new crush in the cinema. My favourite outing might be going to the movies, if not going to the beach/being by water, although i haven't done so regularly in many years, so movies might top it for now. ♡
Twinlore: Adrian Alexander Veidt, aka Ozymandias, from Watchmen, has about the same name as my fictional long-lost twin brother in MQ the webcomic being Alexander Adrian Amaranth, and is the inspiration for Commander Erwin Smith in Attack on Titan, whom I was already twinning with, as I share a life-day (May 4th) with his Japanese voice actor, among other coincidences/synchronicities, etc... Curiously enough, Adrian is also created by Alan Moore, whom we (being my brothers and I) have had interesting parallels between our creative writings and his before, in the form of John Constantine and our character, Leopold Florel, also inspired by Sting, and fighting against damnation for his own soul akin to John ... Must be similar creative thoughtwaves.
I apologise for this description, I'm still quite ill, and my mind is a bit delirious, so I'm not writing properly as I should be ... I took these screenshots of Adrian's actor from the behind the scenes feature of Freud's Last Session, cos Matthew Goode makes the most adorable faces, and reminds me of my sweet dreams of living as Adrian's wife in an AU version of the Watchmen world (what's hilarious about those dreams is I still live with depressive psychosis and have Karasu as my imaginary husband in that world too, with Adrian being that world's "real life" husband, curiously enough...perhaps my mind training me for if it happens).
