I just read Beetle & the Hollowbones by Aliza Layne. It's a graphic novel that follows a young goblin girl, Beetle, who is training to be a witch and her best friend Blob Ghost, who is trapped in a mall. Maybe things aren't great, but they're having fun together when a girl from Beetle's past shows up at the same time that they find out the mall might be demolished! Now Beetle has to race against time to find a way to release Blob Ghost from being confined to the mall before it's destroyed!
This was such a cute and heart warming read. The art style is both cute and beautiful at the same time. Beetle makes great expressions and the fantastical colors and background colors make everything feel magical. It's a great coming of age story with loads of magic. It also has good LGBTQIA rep, which was a nice surprise!
Id recommend this to anyone who enjoys magical fun teenagers. It really reminded me of Little Witch Academia, so I think if you are a fan of that show you should really give this book a read.

Beetle & the Hollowbones by Aliza Layne
I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH. it has everything i want. best friends, magic, chosen family, queer kids, adults who help them and love them and protect them from adults who are awful, incredible art!! i love precious goblin girl Beetle, i love sweetie pie Blob Ghost who talks in pictures, i love skeleton girl love interest Kat, i love badass Gran!! the stakes are small but personal, the emotions are tender and sincere. i'm a sucker for a story about finding your power and using it to help the people you love.
some other things i love about this book: the introduction of a romantic interest doesn't break up the central friendship! it feels rare and precious to encounter stories where friendships are just as or more important to the plot than the romantic element. it's less hard to find in children's lit just because of the target age group, but still! also i LOVE Blob Ghost's picture-speak, it's like a graphic novel inside the graphic novel, incredibly charming and always clear even without any words. also also!!! i won't spoil the ending, but i love the resolution of the tension between Beetle wanting to be a beautiful sorceress doing flashy magic and the more grounded, homey goblin magic her Gran is teaching her.
also i'm realizing belatedly that none of this really explains the plot at all, but i went into this book knowing nothing and had a great time, so
the deets
how i read it: i read a physical paperback copy (and then wrapped it up to give to my best friends and bought myself another copy).
try this if you: like a spooky-themed town, miss hanging out at the mall, cry when characters express sincere emotions, are into magical girls, dig a small story with big magic and bigger love
some panels i really liked: "We used to write FAN FICTION together!"

I’m so happy to be included! Thank you so much for the tag <3
1. Three ships
I don’t ship often, but I do love Lumity (from The Owl House)! At first I was hesitant about it, but once the needed character development happened the ship quickly grew on me. They are so sweet together. Uhhh I used to ship Discord x Fluttershy (from My Little Pony) many many years ago…but I don’t ship that anymore lol. I think the only ships I really care about are shipping my original characters <<
2. Last song you listened to
I’ve been listening to The First Step - Will Wood & the Tapeworms and also Mr Jones - Counting Crows
3. Last movie you watched
AHHH YES I AGREE WITH YOU!!! Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is such an incredible movie from both a visual and narrative standpoint 💕 The last movie I watched was actually Treasure Planet. I specifically love the character writing in that movie
4. Currently reading
I read the graphic novel Beetle & The Hollowbones by Aliza Layne. The illustrations in it are very pretty <3
5. Currently watching
Nothing right now <<
6. Currently consuming
Guacamole with white bread (because I ran out of tortilla chips jksjkp)
7. Currently craving
I’d like to get more sleep and have the motivation to draw again. Also maybe some tea because it’s cold right now <<
And now time to tag people! Feel free to ignore this post if you don’t want to answer any questions. I hope you have a nice day

Call me Sea! (they/them) I'm a Non-Binary Aromantic Asexual Filipino American and Full-Time Library Worker (currently in my late 20s)! In my spare time, I bounce from interest to interest while doodling and writing and exploring different aspects of storytelling. I tend to view things under a queer lens or have fun thinking about what if scenarios. You'll mostly see me posting fanworks, but every once in a blue moon I'll let my original work see the light of day.
I do not take commissions, but I will sometimes ask for doodle requests. DO NOT ask me to create anything that promotes incest, pedophilia, or acts of bigotry (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc) in any form (Don't Interact with me if you support that stuff either). I also don't create anything NSFW, but I'm usually fine seeing that kinda content (except fetish and heavy gore). I'm Very Fond of hurt/comfort scenarios, familial bonds, and sapphic romance, so absolutely talk to me about that stuff if you wanna!

@msmargaretmurry tagged me to post 9 books i love/recommend! i'm staring at my bookshelf rn like, can i remember 9 books i've ever read? let's find out!
on a sunbeam by tillie walden - this is a graphic novel but it counts. what a good story, beautifully told, incredibly illustrated. tillie walden is an artist who speaks to my soul i think
the crying of lot 49 by thomas pynchon - this was my favorite book for a great number of years. it's short but complex and it holds up when i reread it now. if you're scared to read pynchon bc he writes the longest books ever, this is the one for you.
the world keeps ending and the world goes on by franny choi - a book of poetry i picked up this year that i loved so so much, i have so many pages marked and passages underlined, i go back to it all the time.
i wasn't going to do this but beartown by fredrick backman - it's about hockey the same way friday night lights is about football. really character-driven, such a beautiful story, my fav book!!
you were born for this by chani nicholas - this is a silly little astrology workbook but it's fun! if you have a burgeoning/young interest in astrology it's worth picking up imo
before the borderless: dialogues with the art of cy twombly by dean rader - this is a book of poems in conjunction with a lot of cy twombly art & sketches. dean rader is a poet i had the pleasure of seeing perform live this past winter and this book is gorgeous. it's in collaboration with the cy twombly foundation and if you've ever been interested in poetry or twombly's art this is a great book
the fire never goes out by nd stevenson - graphic memoir by nd stevenson, creator of nimona, show runner of she-ra and the princesses of power; it includes mental illness discussion & gender feelings and it really spoke to me.
watership down - richard adams - i'll be surprised if this book isn't on everyone's radar but i reread it about once per year. but such a vitally fundamental book for me!!
beetle & the hollowbones by aliza layne - this is a kids graphic novel (middle grade maybe?) so ymmv with how into it you are but it's the PERFECT spooky szn read to me, an easy read about a chaotic little goblin who's in love with a cat girl and lives with her even more chaotic goblin grandma. i've reread it many times!!
i am not going to tag anyone but if you see this and want to do it, please do!! and tag me about it!! i want to hear your book recs and hear you talk about your fav books!

January books
okay so i was going to do some cute eight-photo collage with all the book covers of the shit i read this month but y'all know it really ain't in me to put forth the effort to do that. what i do have the energy to do is to read 8 books and tell you a bunch of shit about them while providing a link to my goodreads so you can see all the pretty pictures i was too lazy to complie.
Here's what i read and what i thought.
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
one star (though i gave it two stars on goodreads just because i don't want people to be like oh look, poly relationships don't perform well, but yeah) i wrote out a whole review about why it was objectively terrible. I wanted to like it but ugh.
Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism by bell hooks
wish i had read this one before i read Hood Feminism, but yes, still a valuable read
Girl, Forgotten by Karin Slaughter
it was good. genuinely good not just "i'm being nice" good. Ms Karen is a bit much sometimes but it is nice to be able to read one of her books without the level of intensity she has in some of her more popular books. I didn't realize until i started it that it was a sequel to Pieces of Her. pleasant surprised
Literature and the New Culture Wars: Triggers, Cancel Culture, and the Teacher's Dilemma by Deborah Appleman
4/5 stars. bit repetitive, cancel culture doesn't exist in any meaningful capacity, and we should absolutely have access to the classics but must be able to have a nuanced approach to them and not treat them like they are infallible.
Beetle & the Hollowbones by Aliza Layne
i fucking loved this. i think the only reason this didn't hit a 5/5 was because i wanted just a tiny bit more of the world building, which is difficult to do in a graphic novel but you know. a girl can dream.
Juice Like Wounds by Seanan McGuire
beautifully done, intense imagery, wish i had read it closer to the time i read In An Absent Dream but meh, what ya gonna do? overall, it was unnecessary but lovely
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
this is one of those "product of its time" things. and i did get intense A Wrinkle in Time vibes in the way it ended. just a screaming ass child hollering the same flat dialogue to save the other protagonist. (i checked, they came out in the same year but this one came out like 7 or 8 months later. could have been a trope of the times) really though was there any reason for will's dad to whop the shit out of him to get him to chill?
Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers
I loved the first book, adored the second, liked this one but didn't feel as attached to the characters this time around. it did have a similar tone to the Monk and Robot books she wrote

You know I gotta do the book asks! How about 1, 2, and 18 (though I’m sure I already know the first part, I want to hear which time period)?
Ohhhh 1 and 2 are so hard!!! How can I pick a favorite, there are so many!! But I will try, so here goes:
book you’ve reread the most times?
While I am an incorrigible rewatcher and a constant fic rereader, I don't tend to reread books all that frequently, there are so many NEW things to read! That said, I have reread The Night Circus quite a few times...
2. top 5 books of all time?
Truly this is impossible, but to start:
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone
The Spy with the Red Balloon by Katherine Locke
The Light Between Worlds by Laura E. Weymouth
Beetle & the Hollowbones by Aliza Layne
(I'm also going to cheat and add Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo, but I've already thought of like 3 more I could mention and I could "and another one!!" you here until the end of time so I'll stop there... :) )
18. do you like historical books? which time period?
I most certainly do! ;) The periods I know most about to write in are between say 1780 and 1920 in the UK and France, so I like reading things set in that time period/place as well, but of the books I just listed four are historical and only one of those is pre-1920 so I am definitely interested in lots of things!
Thanks for the ask!! :)
