I've been thinking about the tragedy of Elizabeth Woodville living to see the end of her family name.
I don't mean her family with her husband, which lived on through her daughter and grandson. I mean her own.
Her sisters died, one by one, many of them after 1485. When Elizabeth died, only Katherine was left, and she would die before the turn of the century as well.
All her brothers died, too. Lewis died in childhood. John was executed. Anthony was murdered. Lionel died suddenly in the peak of Richard's reign, unable to see his niece become queen. Edward perished at war. Richard died in grieving peace. For all the violence and judgement the family endured, it was "an accident of biology" that ended their line: none of the brothers left heirs, and the Woodville name was extinguished. We know the family was aware of this. We know they mourned it, too:
“Buy a bell to be a tenor at Grafton to the bells now there, for a remembrance of the last of my blood.”
Elizabeth lived through the deposition and death of her young sons, and lived to see the end of her own family name. It must have been such a haunting loss, on both sides.

i will die on the "karl weissman bisexuality" hill. HE TOLD ME IN A DREAM!!!! it's just a little messier for him because he really likes women and will not figure it out ever. charlotte hillinghead TO ME also has the exact opposite problem where she is very much in love with her husband and doesn't have any incentive (or freedom considering the time period) to explore her sexuality. the way she accepted hillinghead's feelings for henry, and was less rejecting and more devastated over thinking he didn't love her or polly, just read queer to me somehow. an acceptance because she's like that too, yk? (maybe a bit of a reach but i don't get to choose who my mind designates as being bi)
i like to think that charlotte-karl experience a spider-verse mindmeld "YOU'RE LIKE ME" moment over being bisexual but they're not quite sure why they're feeling that way because they have no idea they're bi. if you are me you will understand perfectly
and i am a henry/alfred/charlotte poly truther as well (please see above discord ranting from my dms with a friend lol)
on more notes of just giving whichever character i want the bisexuality card, hasan is bi to me too. i think hillinghead and her bond a little over that shared religious guilt, of having their respective institutions be homophobic, and the feeling for so much of their life that they're different, so there must be something wrong. it helps her empathise with him and they quickly become closer because of it :) possibly also introducing him to queer lit, and maybe some non fiction lgbt history books
and one last final doodle because i think alfred as the only detective with an active love life where he's pursuing someone would make the others pretend like they can be adults but they want to know SO BAD and they also give advice once in a while because they're rooting for alfred :) they're all pretty good at hiding how badly they're invested in this (think iris 'casually' asking hillinghead how it's going and the other two perk up in the background) like i refuse to believe any of them are totally immune to the equivalent of office-gossip

Book of the Week: After I Died, I Became Popular Again

My Synopsis: Whether as the impoverished painter Fu Yi of the Tang Dynasty who died too early or the cannon fodder newly discovered young master of the Qi family he’s transmigrated into, Qi Linqing only wants to paint. Whether as Fu Yi’s apprentice, Liang Luoduan, or as the minor love rival for the protagonist’s affections he’s transmigrated into, Zhong Chen only wants to win the love of the master he’s pined for for 2,000 years. Don’t worry, though: their friends still ship it!
My Actual Review: The funniest thing about this novel is how much care Zhong Chen takes to not be discovered as a transmigrator, meanwhile Qi Linqing gives absolutely zero fucks about being discovered—except by Zhong Chen 😭 Most of the conflict lies in this disconnect between the characters, so it’s very low-suspense and drama. Asshole characters get their just desserts, and good characters live happily ever after. Only minor question I had was why tf does everyone hate the Chinese in this book???

#The Final Curse of Ophelia Cray#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#This is ok! I enjoyed it on the surface level but think it could have had a bit more depth and structure#I do always like to see an aroace MC who mentions it casually throughout the story and the central sister relationship#The writing is a little young for me… I think it has this silly/satirical element of the plot and caricature-villains but the prose wasn’t#quite funny enough to make it work....so parts just felt a bit random and undeveloped to me?#I genuinely love a lot of MG and younger YA but this is on the side of writing style#that felt too noticably young for me to enjoy fully (for me - obviously it's for teens! so that's okay!)#It’s quite slow to start (it doesn’t get into it until half way?) and the two storylines felt a bit disconnected.#All the different things happening felt all over the place & I felt the ending was a bit unsatisfying#Betsy’s love interest seemed like a nice interesting boy but it was such instalove I felt like there was no development between them lol#I think it has some fun parts and some good characters! I would still recommend to teens looking for queer piratey stories#(tho as a note - THEY aren't really ever pirates. maybe briefly.) (I think maybe ofmd comps might do it a disservice if you're not clear#it's just 'piratey and also there's queer people)#there's some good side lesbians (def side tho)

Not me casually sending my mom articles on QPRs to prime her for explaining the I am in fact marrying my best friend platonically and no it has not been a joke
#personal rambles#cassette tape#qprs#I actually found a pretty good one in men’s health magazine of all places#and then used that as a casually transition#like ‘hey look at this good article I found in such a weird place!’#she communicates through articles sometimes? and it’s how she learns stuff best I think#and she also sends ME articles about queer stuff so it’s not totally out of left field?#I’ll have to be careful how I send the second one tho or it might tip her off before I’m ready#I’m waiting until after the proposal for the uncomfy convos with literally everyone in our family#I’m just priming mom with the articles so she’ll have a basis of understanding of what a qpr is#and that no we haven’t been lying about our relationship this whole time#and yes we’re best friends#but also we’re getting married and it’s different from traditional friendship#yes we’re in love but also not like that but also also not like that either but no but yes and kind of and it’s complicated#but I’m sure this short one page article will explain everything forever
