I know you’ve heard the saying before, the old adage of  ‘familiarity breeds contempt’. The simple but logical idea that if you spend too much time with someone or do something too much you will eventually see flaws in the things you once adored. As much as I do appreciate the premise, like the true millennial I am, I’m afraid I would like to give this proverb the remix that absolutely no one asked for. I hear your motto and I raise you ‘familiarity breeds contentment.’
Without a shadow of a doubt I am lazy a creature of habit and I really do get a sick kick out of a good, reliable, unchanging routine. The more futile the routine the better, there’s something about being propped up by the familiarity of a well trodden tradition that just feels right. Like a semi threadbare hoodie that you can’t stop putting on despite it being well past its wear-by date. Therefore I’d have to say either I am the exception to the aforementioned rule or this rule is simply no longer fit for purpose. In a world that is constantly fluctuating between utter chaos and relative insanity I find my self yearning for all things familiar more than ever.

D'Artagnan.
" A selection of 20th century textile designs from the Silver Studio in London when produced under the direction of Rex Silver from 1901-1962.
Rex (Reginald ) Silver (1879 -1965) was the son of Arthur Silver (1853 -1896) the original founder of Silver Studios in 1880 who designed the iconic Hera Peacock feather design for furnishing fabric for Liberty in 1887.
What strikes me about two of these designs is that Winifred Mold 's work #1 is reminiscent of the work of the French designer Émile-Allain Séguy. and #4 by Mrs MacPherson suggests the work not only of Poiret's Atelier Martine but possibly the Wiener Werkstätte.
#1 Design by Winifred Mold for the Silver Studio, Silver Studios 1923 Gouache on paper © MoDa
#2 1920s Evening handkerchief designed by Rex Silver for Silver Studios in fine crêpe-de-Chine printed in a pale blue ground with a pair of crossed peacock feathers within narrow borders of scrollwork and flame like forms. The colours are pale and deep pink, eau-de-nil, grey and purple. The edges are machine hemmed. Length: 22.5cm Width: 22.5cm © V&A
#3 Unnamed print (1919) by Winifred Mold for Silver Studios, printed by Liberty. © MoDA Middlesex University
#4 Design for a dress silk fabric produced by Mrs MacPherson the Silver Studio in 1928.height: 210mm width: 162mm for a dress silk, inspired by French decorative design.
Note the use of the bright colours of green, orange, white, pink and yellow, on a black ground. The stylized flowers and intentionally naïve mark-making of this pattern are drawn in the spirit of the French couturier Paul Poiret's Atelier Martine © MoDA Middlesex University
#5 1927 Poppies, buttercups and bluebells allover design for a silk dress fabric designed by Edwin Parker Silver Studio A handwritten note by Rex Silver on the bottom of the paper notes that, "the broad leaves are inclined to be rather clumsy - daintiness and delicacy is the essence of a successful dress pattern".height 290mm
width: 255mm © MoDA Middlesex University
#6. 1936 Design for a printed textile by the Silver Studio artist 'Miss W', from 1936. It features a regularly spaced, repeating single flower spray motif, within diagonal rows of clouds, in yellow, turquoise, orange and black. There is a colour chart in the bottom left corner.Gouache on paper © MoDA Middlesex University
#7. Design for a carpet by Monsieur Dupont in 1929.height: 612mm width: 493mm
Dupont was apprenticed at the Silver Studio from 1929 - 1930 and sent some of his work to Rex Silver before arriving in England. This is an example of his work and the pattern consists of abstract palm tree-like shapes, in red, orange, brown, yellow and white, on a brown ground.
These colours became 'de rigeur' for cheap English modernist designs in the 1930s. © MoDA Middlesex University
#8 1935 Agapanthus design for a silk dress print by Madeleine C Lawrence for the Silver Studio in 1935 The design features a large pattern of agapanthus flowers and leaves, in lilac and green.watercolour on paper

~~ooo~~~
All Silver Studio designers worked to strict instructions from Rex Silver. His job as Director was to understand the technical and aesthetic requirements of the Studio's clients, who were major textile and wallpaper manufacturers. He also freely criticised and commented on the design work produced by his employees.
Winifred Mold (1894-?) worked as a designer for Silver Studios in London from 1912 to 1935. She is known for her florals and her Japanese-inspired patterns like the parasol print #3 Silver Studios Collection
Not a lot is known about her and as a woman designer she was at a distinct disadvantage ; particularly when in 1899 Silver Studios had advertised for designers with the comment "Ladies need not apply."
She and a few other women hired from 1912 were required to work from home. They never saw their male colleagues at work. Director Rex Silver conducted meetings with them in their home and discussed designs by correspondence , much of which is in the MoDa Museum archives.

What Allain de Bottom and the Betty’20 White Stay Golden America Shirtof Life probably won’t narrate in his cool British voice is that often people who call themselves “Frank”, or maybe “Sincere”, are the ones who lack empathy, subtlety or care for other, in other words their strong ego could be a solipsism, and they ” Frankly don’t give a damn”.

“Unrequited love may be painful, but it is safely painful, because it does not involve inflicting damage on anyone but oneself, a private pain that is as bitter-sweet as it is self-induced. But as soon as love is reciprocated, one must be prepared to give up the passivity of simply being hurt and take on the responsibility of perpetrating hurt oneself.”
- Alain de Botton, Essays in Love
