A message to Twitter users coming to tumblr: a message from your local duel-hellsite citizen

So, I’ve seen a ton of Twitter users talking about making and sharing their new tumblr blogs, to escape Elon Musk’s “anti censorship” bullshittery. First of all: welcome! I know it’s looking bleak over there; especially for trans people. But, now that you’re here, I’m here to tell you all about tumblr etiquette, how this website works, and how it’s different from Twitter. Because you can’t come onto here acting like it’s Twitter, lest The Beast get to you.

First, here are a small handful of tips and tumblr facts!

Your likes and who you are following are automatically set to public. You can make them private in your settings!

You can block tags from the settings, too.

There are lots of bots on here. If you’re not careful, you could be mistaken for one! The main way you can avoid this is changing your icon and header from the defaults. Adding a bio helps too!

You can queue and schedule posts so that your account posts throughout the day.

Like Twitter, tumblr has a radical feminist and TERF problem. However, they’re pretty easy to spot. There are lots of guides out there to help you learn how to spot tumblr TERFs!

Tumblr, for the most part, does not have any celebrity or brand accounts.

Your tumblr follower count is private.

You can have multiple accounts with the same email, and they’re very easy to switch between! These are called “sideblogs”.

Your main page is not a “timeline”. It is a “dashboard”!

You can have a custom desktop theme using HTML! Think like ye olde MySpace days. There are tons of pre-made tumblr themes available, if you’re not already proficient in HTML; including free ones!

Now, let’s talk tumblr etiquette and how it’s different from Twitter. You’re a tumblr user now! It’s time to start acting like it!

Don’t just like posts. They don’t increase visibility whatsoever. The way that you can help posts that you like is reblogging them to your blog. Especially for art!

We don’t say “oomfs” or “oomfies”. Just “mutuals” is fine, thanks!

Adding onto a post with pointless comments is frowned upon. If all you have to say is “this is so true,” or something else to that effect, you should put that in the tags of your reblog.

Most people don’t have carrds or rentries on here. Some of us do, but it’s not an obligation like it is for Twitter.

Similarly, we don’t censor words like “die” and “death”. Posts about wanting to brutally murder people in power go viral all the time, and it’s completely allowed. I’m serious! Enjoy your newfound freedom!

Blocking isn’t a big deal here. Get rid of any weird notion you have that morality is linked to blocking certain people.

But lastly, and most importantly:

Drop your discourse at the door.

If you try to post about most of the things that Twitter users discourse about, you will be laughed off the site. Especially Twitter LGBT+ discourse. Posts actively mocking topics of Twitter discourse go viral on here regularly.

Tumblr has mostly healed since its discourse-ridden days, and it’s now much more chill. Of course, discourse still happens, but it is so easy to avoid now. For a lot of us, tumblr is the last pleasant social media site left, so don’t ruin it.

Here is a list of discourse-related things that tumblr users don’t do:

Most of us don’t do callout posts, unless it’s something actually serious (like that one blog that had a human slave).

Everything that you heard on Twitter was “exclusive” to certain LGBT+ groups is used by just about everyone on here. Bi women use the double venus symbol on here. You’ll just have to learn to live with that.

In particular, I want to emphasize how much we don’t do flag discourse. To the point that somebody caring about flag discourse of any kind is how we tend to identify an ex-Twitter user.

On here, you will never have to see another slur discourse post again, unless you actively seek it out.

Hello hello bootwt and any other twitter runways, welcome to tumblr! I’ve seen many a useful tumblr etiquette posts on my feed and I honestly had nothing to add. However as someone who’s been lurking/active on booblr since the very beginning, here are some less so guidelines, more so tips and tricks to make your first experience on tumblr more enjoyable :D

By selecting already written text, you can do all all sorts of cool things with it, such as bullet points, colors, smaller text size, so have fun.

Alt text/image IDs and video transcripts are very useful for everyone on tumblr, especially for the disabled community. Here’s a great post on why image ids are so important and how to write them with links about video ids/transcript near the end.

Tumblr users follow the “block and move on” mantra hard. The ranboo tag used to be really bad, and I get wanting weirdos of the internet. But trying to hold them accountable will only give them more attention and put you through more anguish. Your better off to block them, their mutuals, and their tags to save you the mental turmoil.

Reblogs > Likes is a general correct assumption for artists so their works can spread to other people. However some people may still want likes on their posts, like if they view likes as special private bookmarks or enjoy the little number going up (it’s me I’m some people I love em both). Blogs will be very apparent to which they prefer and you should too.

Tags like “cheese don’t look” on Twitter work the same way here.

If you want create separate accounts for things like posting art or other fandoms, create a side blog(s)! Or don’t! It’s your blog.

You’re able to turn off comments and reblogs on specific posts (like for wips or stuff you don’t want to spread) and can turn off anons or disable your ask box.

Scheduling posts are here as well plus you can automatically schedule reblogs through the queue feature! It’s described better in the queue tab under your account

Reposting stuff without credit/permission is still weird. Just reblog it.

Nobody can see the amount of followers you have. 🎉 If you want to celebrate hitting a certain amount of followers, that’s also chill too.

Terms like “moot and oomf” aren’t really used here like they were on Twitter but honestly you do you.

Lots of these are optional (except the accessibility stuff don’t be a jackass :)) so just have fun and try to enjoy the internet again! :D

Hi. First of all, i'm a fan of jimone/kathony. Some jonny fans talk about him as being superior, the best actor, the perfect man. I don't like this at all because as a queer person, I see it in some way as a heteronormative vision (I don't know how to explain this well) and totally contrary to the vibes of him who, like Simone, seems humble, focused on his work. That being said, there is a fan on reddit, kangaroowooden, who is one that annie and others have criticized and rightly so. They are the one who said that Simone went to many events and so on and they talk in a strange way, even about him. I also have a theory that she is one of the jonny fans who sends some anons to Annie. That being said, I think it's a lie that Jonny's fans haven't been criticized or exposed. Maybe we should talk more about it, especially because of racism and misogyny, but a moderator of kanthony's reddit has already done it several times and well I remember that in March, a kathony fan on twitter with more than 3000 followers talked about "jb fans". I think you know who I'm talking about. Sorry, this is long. Thank you anyway.

well anon maybe it’s because tone is hard to read on tumblr in a block of text, but i really hope this ask is not passive aggressive. i do agree with a couple of your points - the rest don’t make a lot of sense to me, i’m sorry to say.

i will begin my response by saying that i do not like to engage or find a conclusive answer to the question/fight on whose stans are better - jonny or simone. i believe it’s a stupid fight and no one is superior here. i said a few days ago that both fandoms, like all fandoms, have bad apples - and everyone should not be defined by that minority. i said that for the simone fandom literally two days ago.

i know of a few jonny fans myself on twt who have been weird, even about him. i either don’t interact with them or have mutually blocked them (after the wig disaster of november 2022).

I don’t think jonny is perfect - nobody is, not him or simone or me or you. i do think he is one of the best actors on that show, amongst the top three for me but maybe not for you and that is fine. that also doesn’t mean he is superior to anyone or is meant as an insult to anyone. i also don’t think he carried the chemistry alone - that was a credit to both jonny and simone and i have said this before - anyone who disagrees is a twat.

i am queer too, and i genuinely don’t understand what you mean by heteronormativity here.

i am not on reddit and am far away from that shitshow - but my oomfs (who happen to be big simone fans) who are active on there have not heard of this person but i believe you when you say that they may be someone who says shit. i also don’t know what they said about jonny or simone and what they were called out on.

i blocked annie last week when she yet again polluted the jonny tag with her nonsense. i got sent some ss after that, and from what i saw, the asks that criticised her were calling her out on her very obvious homophobia and racism - i am a desi person and annie has been racist to me, and other desi fans so make of that what you will.

A lot of things could be said about your brothers. Each and every one of them had their moments and mistakes, just like you did. Some people would call them rude, or selfish amongst other things, but the one thing they could never say, is that they didn’t care about you. ARMY pointed it out all the time; they even had compilations of moments the eight of you cared for each other, but your favorite were the ones titled things like: “six minutes of proof that bts’ world revolves around y/n.”

Jin jumped as your head fell against his bicep. You were at an afterparty for an awards show the eight of you had been asked to present at. The music wasn’t too loud- you used to joke that it was because everyone knew rich people liked to brag. He smiled at her before slipping off his blazer to cover you with it. “She works hard, sometimes I think she works harder than the rest of us,” he chuckled, pulling you closer so that he could make sure she was comfortable. 

No one knows how a fan account had that video trending on twitter under the hashtag #BabyY/N three days later.

One bad thing about being the only girl in an idol group, is that sometimes you get the least amount of consideration. Not because they didn’t respect you or anything like that, it’s just that after styling for seven boys, you think sometimes the staff tends to forget you are not a guy, or maybe they had never seen a girl in real life.

Or at least that’s what the short dress you were wearing had you feeling like. It’s not like it wasn’t pretty, a black skirt and connected by a thin, white lacy strip that wrapped around your abdomen. It was gorgeous, and the silky ribbon of a choker around your neck made it look even better, but it was just.. so short. 

You powered through like a trooper, despite the fear in the back of your mind that you were flashing the entire audience while you danced. The minute the song stopped and everyone moved to get a drink of water, Yoongi was taking his jacket off and tying it around your waist. 

Not speaking into the mic, you let him do as he wanted but asked, “Are you even allowed to do that? Won’t the stylist say something about how you ruined her outfit?”

Tightening the knot of material, he rolled his eyes. “Honestly, I don’t give a fuck what the stylist has to say right now. Not only is your outfit not okay, but it’s obviously making you uncomfortable. You can wear this until the next outfit change.”

“Thank you,” you hugged him briefly, glad he had your back.

There was a time where you guys were recording a live during a long break while at practice. Fans talked about it for ages afterwards. Taehyung sat against one of the mirrors, holding his phone, while Jimin was in the picture beside him. 

“Basically, that’s it. We haven’t really-”

“Y/N, stop running around, you’re going to hurt yourself!” Jimin’s voice cut in, making the other man look over. 

“What is she doing?”

Jimin huffed, “I have no idea, but she’s going to- Y/N, at least t- no actually come here, I’ll do it for you.”

And when you bounced into the view of the camera, only for all the fans to see Jimin pulling your foot to him so he could tie your shoe. “Be careful this time, even if you’re playing tag.”

Jeongguk laughed at the camera, the comments being ridiculous. He was doing a live, answering questions about the embarrassing moments he chose to talk about. “No, it was funny! He fell, but then he tried to play it off by doing pushups, but he feel while trying to do that, so-”

He heard the door open in the background, and the camera saw him turn to the side just before he let out an “oomf.” The side profile of your face was visible to the viewers as you moved to curl against him on the bed. You rubbed your eyes sleepily, and he frowned. “It’s really late, you’re supposed to be asleep.”

You mumbled, “I was, but then I got scared and woke up. I didn’t want to be alone.” He pouted at that. You tended to have nightmares whenever you were stressed, and since he was the one who found out about them first, he was usually the person you ran to. 

“Do you wanna sleep in here?” He asked softly. Everyone tuned in could hear everything, but your brother barely remembered that he was even recording as he fussed over you. You nodded, already drifting off on his shoulder. He smiled down at you before turning back to the camera. He read the many comments of everyone cooing over you. “Yeah, she’s alright. I’ll tell her to tell you guys herself tomorrow. Anyways..”

Of course, there were incidents that were more serious. 

The sun was setting, which made the perfect picture for the shoot you guys were about to do. The rooftop everyone was on was beautiful and stone, the kind of background you saw in movies. The sun seemed to glitter, and the wind made everything sway until the lake’s seemingly glittering waves caught your eye. “Whoa,” you gasped, moving closer to get a look.

“Y/N-”

You waved off Taehyung’s warning. “I’ll be careful! I just want to get a closer look!” You walked back over to the edge, admiring the way the sun sparkled on the water. You subconsciously leaned closer, moving your body a little too far against the thin railing, but before you could topple over, a hand grabbed the back of your jacket with a tight grip, yanking you back until you were a good distance away from the railing. 

Your back hit someone else’s and you recognized Taehyung as you turned to see him. He stared down at you. “I said be careful!” 

“I’m sorry,” you said a little shakily. Taehyung sighed before pulling you back into a hug. “Having a little sister is so hard, you’re not leaving my sight for the rest of the day.”

Another moment fans loved to talk about actually happened at a fansign. You smiled brightly as the next fan came up to you, following the line. “Hello!” you greeted happily. 

Something about this girl threw you off though, and the look in her eyes had you unintentionally leaning away from her. You couldn’t decipher it, but when nothing happened, you told yourself you were just overthinking it. She was probably just excited to meet what could have been her favorite artist group, right? 

You stood by Hoseok as the fansign ended, moving to follow him out of then venue. He chuckled as he looked at you. “You have that look.”

You wrinkled your nose. “What look?” 

“The one that says you’re hungry,” he teased, poking you in the stomach, making you whine. “Well, maybe-”

“Y/N!” You turned around, cutting yourself off mid sentence, to see the fan from earlier. “I found you.” Her smile was a little too bright as she reached for you, only for Hoseok to push you behind him as you stuttered out, “I’m sorry, we really have to go.” 

You moved to attempt to leave after that, but her demeanor quickly changed. Her face changed from too happy and delighted, to dark and angry. Her eyes narrowed, and she reached for you more aggressively this time. “Don’t be son ungrateful,” she squeezed your wrist painfully and you cried out as security finally made their way over. 

Hoseok immediately pulled you to him, looking at the rapidly forming bruise on your wrist. Even though at the moment, it was just a large red mark, his face still tightened. “This never should have happened,” he cursed when he noticed tears in your eyes. 

He pulled you into a hug as he waited for the rest of your brothers to show up. “It won’t happen again,” he promised you.

The moment that was probably the most talked about, was when a talk show host felt the need to ask you how it felt. Namjoon shared a glance with you. 

“Excuse me?” you asked timidly, straightening up. 

The interviewer turned to you. “Oh, you speak English! I was just asking how it felt to be so similar to a child all the time.” The man’s tone of voice didn’t even change, but the idea that he had expected Namjoon to translate this to you, and now casually asked you as if there was nothing wrong with the question. “You know, they’re always taking care of you, it makes it seem like you can’t do anything by yourself. Does it ever irritate you?”

You tried laughing it off, the chuckle leaving your lips as you ticked a strand of hair behind your ear awkwardly. “Not really. They’re not doing anything to be condescending, and I know that.”

“Do you feel like that is because you need their help?”

“That’s enough,” Namjoon cut in, his jaw clenched as he slid forward a little in his seat as if to help get his point across. “Y/N is perfectly capable of taking care of herself. We pitch in to check on her because we love and care about her, and she does the same for us. She is not a child but a grown woman who we love and care about enough to make sure she’s okay and gets the nice treatment she deserves. With all due respect, if you insult our sister again, we will be forced to cut this short.”

You looked over to him, offering a silent thank you as the interviewer coughed, trying to recover. The bad news was that this interview was live, so he really couldn’t do anything but sit there and realized he had just embarrassed himself. 

Honestly, what else is there to say? You loved and cared about your brothers, and they loved and cherished you.

I’ve been to athens and delphi and mycenae in greece, seen the tomb of clytemnestra. i’ve been to the site of hrothgar’s hall in denmark, and I’ve seen the hermitage in saint petersburg and the musée d’orsay, sainte-chapelle, notre dame and the catacombs of paris. i’ve seen several berninis! the david! i’ve seen greek curse tablets in person, which is excellent, and liver models! ostraka! i studied in japan?? which is all EXTREMELY wild like sometimes i think about that and it’s like ???? dang wtf i’ve really lived my child self’s dream. O_O one day, I’d like to see beijing. i’d like to see nüwa’s stones (lol is this even real or just a hazy memory from something my chinese school teacher told me) and I’d like to see my grandparents’ hometowns. and i’d like to visit the rabbit god temple in taiwan. oh, and one day!!! i would like to see the cathedral of chartres and also visit bretagne. :’) oh oh! and vilnius! Random fact: there is a largely forgotten,once-famous chinese vaudeville magician who went by the name of Long Tack Sam. his wikipedia page is here. his great-granddaughter, ann marie fleming, made both a documentary film and an illustrated biography about his life. i’ve read the book, but I haven’t yet watched the documentary. i always find asian american history fascinating because it’s so little discussed in mainstream US history classes. we learn about the chinese exclusion act, the railroads, and  japanese internment but that’s like. it. nothing about chinatowns, the races status of asians in the US, asian celebrities, asian artists, asian gang violence, asian leftist movements and how they were influenced by the black panthers etc. idk. i myself know very little about it, but I’d like to know more.
