We just saw “The Marvels” and honestly it was quite good! A very fun romp, oozes charm and girl power. I thought they had really nice chemistry together and I hope we get another one!

It feels like this is another “Elemental” type where people online were saying “its so bad” then you watch it and find quite an enjoyable film!

you’ve talked about ultimate ms marvel boxing, is that an original piece you’ve made for her character in that universe or has she always boxed? I can’t really remember if that was something she did in her runs. Either way, how would her character change (or stay the same) when it comes to boxing and fighting in the ultimate universe?

It’s an original piece, but there’s a little inspiration from canon. When I saw this piece from Oliver Coipel featuring the original Kamala and the original Ms Marvel posted up together, I noticed how the former’s hands were placed strategically, and her stance was hunched like that of a boxer’s.

And then it hit me—she’s been drawn fighting with her fists since her inception, yet this was the first and only time I could recall that she’s actually looked like she’s known what she was doing with them. She could probably get knocked down easily or something because her feet are set a little too wide, but otherwise it was the first time she looked like she could decisively kick anyone’s ass; she looked like a scrapper.

That was when I started hitting the drawing board for the Ultimate Ms Marvel I was building up. Kamala as a low down and dirty boxer not only fit the unapologetically gritty setting I had in mind (her first inspiration was Kick-Ass lol), but it was an honestly good idea on its own. I suspect it’s the same epiphany they had adapting Vi into Arcane, who’s main weapons in canon are also her comically huge (metal) fists.

In the story, I have it that she joins a boxing gym against her parents’ wishes to have a better chance in a fight, as while she’s unrelenting in combat, she’s less coordinated than she’d like. Learning from her coach though, that’s the real story. She pieces together her newest student being a vigilante in a matter of weeks having been one herself in Pakistan before her secret identity was compromised, forcing her to leave for America in the eighties or nineties.

But anyway, learning to box for real is what gives Kamala the confidence to feel how she actually presents herself in the streets; an ass kicking machine, and it rings true as she becomes a more dangerous and focused combatant. As a fighter, I’d say she fights like Ultimate Captain America—brutally, dirty if she has to, and able to take a better hit than what her opponent can throw. She’s a brawler.

And months ago, I considered the idea of her being an official boxer with bouts set up and a belt to chase at her coach’s behest. Hell, I even cooked up a stage name for her, Killa Kamala (like Killa Cam!), but I haven’t given it much thought since then besides Ultimate Kaboom being a rival opponent. Now that I think about it though, there’s a real life costumed vigilante named Phoenix Jones who’s cover before he had to relinquish his identity was a UFC fighter.

i have 2 separate q's: did they ever explain why they made jess pregnant? or is that a men-writing-comics / misogyny thing? what do you hope for in beyond the spiderverse story and character-wise? i'm not fond of gwen (outside the trans-coding) so i'm a lil ticked she took a lot of the storyline when it could've been MORE miles (or even hobie, pav, AND JESS) and i still have hope for cindy and more anya and maybe felicia from the concept art ;_;

i think its a men thing. like she was a single woman with no real love interests at the time so what else do men think women do next aside from have children tbh like. what else is there for her.

as for spiderverse!!!! i would love to see cindy and kaine, more of anya and ben and miguel. miguel can fight any 15 year old he wants to just not miles. some resolution with miles and his parents is important to me like. hes such a family oriented kid. whether its because he tells them he's spiderman or they figure it out or he tells them as much as hes capable of telling them idk. spiderverse right now i feel is missing miles' key supporting cast??? where's ganke??? he gets a 2 second cameo whilst remixed mcu ganke but ned actually lives his life. right now it just doesnt seem like miles has any friends outside of gwen etc. theyre gonna have to figure out what theyre doing with alternate universes and im not sure how theyre gonna do that lmao like 616 merged so everyone is in the same place but i dont think that will work for spiderverse. but i also dont want miles to be shut off from others like him???? unless they give him some more people in his own universe to work with?? spider people or not. they could give him a sam alexander and a kamala

Representation that Marvel did get right in the Ms Marvel show(we haven't seen the show so this is from the trailers, my knowledge of the comics, interviews and what I know about Sana Amanat's views and style) :-

1. Kamala Khan being a practicing Muslim that doesn't don a hijab: I feel Hollywood always takes this one way or the other. Either the Muslim character dons a hijab or doesn't and completely disrespects Islam. Ms Marvel is unique in the sense that Kams respects and practices her religion. She prays(shown in the trailer), she only eats Halaal food, she dresses modestly(a big part of the religion) and while her parents are protective, they don't seem to force anything on her and they have a healthy relationship (most times). Kamala also respects her religious leaders and seeks them out for advice. We see this in her scene with Sheikh Abdullah in the promo. Many Muslims don't don a hijab and I think it would be great for people who don't know much about the religion to see this side of it. Kamala also loves, respects and understands Muslims that are more devout than her such as her brother, sister in law and longtime friend Nakia.

2. Ms Marvel's love interest is a Muslim: I'm a Kamran fan. His character is protrayed as being handsome, wealthy, charming, smart AND a South Asian Muslim. Their relationship is a lesson in what may seem perfect on paper doesn't translate well in reality. BUT I love that Kamala cared for him deeply and sincerely fell for the guy her parents would actually love and approve of. This never happens in fiction. I also like that it's Kamran choosing to follow a corrupt inhuman that pushes them apart. It wasn't something like him joining an Islamic terrorist organization. This is why I wish the inhumans were in the MCU. Sorry to Bruno but I'm giving Kamran a chance till the last minute lmao.

3. Portrayal of South Asian culture in a Muslim family: I love that Kamala wears multiple desi outfits throughout the trailers and promos. We also see her dancing at Amir's wedding. Kamala is a huge Bollywood fan in the comics so I totally see her enjoying this. I'm also happy to see the partition of India being included. Something noteworthy for all South Asians. Again, Hollywood doesn't necessarily show what it means to be South Asian when they include Muslim characters.

I'm thrilled to finally have a character that shows how cool it can be to be Muslim and South Asian because while some stories are necessary... It isn't always necessary to show that being a part of a certain religion is a constant struggle as we see in Elite or the movie Hala. No matter how accurate it might be SOMETIMES. This show is what the world needs to see.

My brother is evolving :)

My brother is 53, but I'm older than he is and I'm constantly growing and changing, so I still keep trying.

Last night he asked me if there were homeless people and immigrants all over the streets in SF where I live and I said, we have some homeless people, but most of them are veterans, and/or people who couldn't quit cocaine or something like that like you were able to do, and you know how hard it is.

And he asked me why he sees stuff like that on the news and I said, what news are you watching?

He said, "Fox News" and I said, "there you go."

He's finally beginning to understand things like there is less crime than there used to be, not more, and why these rich assholes do their best to deceive us, and largely succeed, outside of the demographics that come here and a few other places.

He is starting to accept Kamala Harris and even though he is still fairly bigoted in some ways (our father was extremely racist, but the "polite" kind and it never stuck to me but it did to him), he is also very annoyed with these "conservatives" wanting to do things like ban abortion and police gender and stop people from using the damn bathroom. He knows I am queer and he also knows that if the line to the women's bathroom is too damn long I will get in the other one and stay there if nobody gives me shit about it, because I am pretty sure they figure I too am just there to pee and GTFO.

Anyhow, this is making me happy, but the funniest thing happened.

He wants to know about my life and my life is mostly work and fandom so I needed to explain fandom to him.

My brother mostly recalls the Bayverse but he loves Transformers and in the past he has said that he is proud to have a Decepticon as a sister, LMAO.

He asked me what I do so I explained to him that I write fanfiction and he said he would have to read it someday. I explained to him with some trepidation that the robots are having a lot of sex in my fics. Turns out he thinks that's fantastic.

And he remembers who Ravage is (he says she looked 'sick' in the movies) and he is completely tickled that I wrote her and Soundwave as lovers since the Dead End and the messy triangle that they got into with Megatron.

When he asked me why I was nervous to tell him I told him that the vast majority of people in TF fandom are chill, cool and fun, but that there are some people who get upset over my writing Transformers stories with sex in them because they think of Ravage as an animal, or they think of Ravage as Soundwave's kid or parent.

He remembers Ravage pretty well, and he thinks she is a badass, and he laughed his ass off.

At that point he went on a rant about purity culture and I gotta say I didn't see this coming: that it would be the stupidity of purity culture that would seriously be helping me pull the scales off his eyes when it comes to capitalism, Fox News and Republicans.

last night i watched the marvels and aaahhh i can happily say that it did not disappoint!! it was fun and entertaining and the fights were great and the characters were so well written! definitely one of the better mcu films, especially in recent years. not a favorite, but i liked it a lot

i really liked the dynamic of carol, maria and kamala (god, kamala is a delight as always :D) and how they worked together. i also liked this carol WAY more than in any other appearance in the mcu. she got an actual personality this time around, fucking finally! had they written her like this from the beginning, i would've liked her earlier. (ok i still would dislike cap marvel bc of the whole military thing, but still. it would've made a difference.)

nick fury having to deal with another universal crisis while kamala's parents breathe down his neck is not something i knew i needed but lmao this was probably the best part of the film. i also love how tired nick is throughout the whole thing. he doesn't even wear his iconic coat anymore - he's now in his "i am too old and too tired to be cool anymore" era and i am SO here for it lol

my only complaints are that the final confrontation was too anticlimactic. it's an action film - you have to deliver a better grand finale than this c'mon mcu wtf. and that when in the end carol settled down in louisiana, there was no mention of sam at all. they could fit kate bishop but not sam?? not even a billboard with sam cap on it passing by or smth??? hm.

but otherwise an entertaining film! there's still hope for the mcu, after all. also, i was worried abt the whole valcarol thing everyone was talking about but honestly? between carol being married to prince yan and having a disney princess like ball dance and song moment with him, and carol's memories of maria and her settling down in the rambeau's old house, there's far more canon material for carolyan and carolmaria than the single valcarol cheek kiss. so it's fine, really, they didn't do maria the disrespect i worried they would

I don’t know if any of y’all keep up with like MCU drama and crap. But I certainly do for the shits and giggles. And if you haven’t heard, Disney and The MCU are essentially rewriting the entirety of Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan, specifically her powers. Instead of her having shapeshifting/elasticity powers, they’re giving her some kinda bracelet that gives her weird energy powers? And they’re blaming it on CGI? And saying that they can’t do her real powers because it won’t look good on CGI, which is so funny to me cuz the obvious solution would be to animate the fucking show. They also said her powers are too “””similar”””” to Mr. Fantastic from the Fantastic Four. Which is beyond dumb. But I digress.

What a lot of people don’t understand is that her powers are very symbolic to her character. The first thing she does when she has her powers and tries to be a hero is shapeshift into carol danvers; a white woman. This is a Pakistani teenager growing up in jersey city, and the first thing she does with her powers is turn into a white woman. There’s a lot to unpack there lmao. I also think because she’s an Inhuman, that would take too much to also unpack, since there apparently was an inhuman TV series but it flopped and so no one’s heard of it lmao.

But I’m very glad this is getting attention because the MCU (in my opinion) has been fucking around with comics too much. And just washing them down to this cookie-cutter style that is just so boring. And they have been heavily known to just entirely erase diversity from their movies and shows and overall destroy popular characters (them literally taking the entirety of Miles Morales Spider-Man and shoving it into their version of Peter Parker plus sprinkling in some Iron Man Jr. was honestly the last straw for me Lmaoooo) so for them to utterly destroy Kamala’s character is what I hope to be the straw that breaks the camels back. I truly hope this topples the Disney/Marvel empire and forces Disney to like cut all ties with marvel and shit (Or at least cut back on their bullshit). Cuz Disney will not make a niche movie/show, that’s just a fact. If they’re gonna spend all that money, they’re gonna make sure that anybody and everybody will see it, hence the cookie-cutter nonsense.

So Disney is really at a crossroads here and has two options:

1) somehow make Kamala as she is in the comics. Idk how they’re gonna do it tbh. Either animate her or play some other trick. But overall they won’t be able to hit a general audience which will then cost them money or

2) Scrap the series, which, given that this is their first marvel lead who is a WOC, and is much more diverse compared to their previous superheroes, will cause utter chaos and may get them cancelled lol

Either way, they’re gonna probably loose a good amount of fans from this, and it’s literally because they’re so dumb and don’t know how to work with any other character that isn’t a straight white cis male.

The thing about comics (that non comics fans don’t really know) is that for a very long time, a lot of characters personal backgrounds have played a huge part to who they are as a hero. This isn’t something “new” that comics have been doing to stay relevant; comics have always been going beyond the general consensus to tell stories about diverse characters. Superman is literally about a refugee who’s parents gave up everything to send him somewhere else for a better life; modeled after the mass Jewish exodus from Europe during Hitler’s reign. The x-men are heavily inspired by the civil rights movements of the 60s and 70s; the characters being modeled after those who were trying to show the world to not be afraid of them for being different (sound familiar?). Comics have always been political and have highlighted diversity, either outright or through symbolism and metaphors.

But what the MCU has done for a very long time is basically scrap all that to show nothing in their movies besides heavy action, the occasional jokes, and stupid little “”Easter eggs”” that give fans weird superiority complexes over other fans. But with this Kamala Khan issue, they’re really gonna have to take a step back and question all that they’ve done up until now, and if they can keep going after this. In the end, Ms. Marvel is my personal superhero for finally stopping the Disney/Marvel empire in its tracks lmao. They should’ve just stopped with endgame, but greed knows no bounds I guess.

okay so thoughts on never have i ever after watching all 10 eps:

-like first and foremost as much as i can criticize about this show it really is incredible to see a girl like me like an actual sri lankan tamil girl being the lead actress in a netflix original and like i will not shut up about this bc i don't think i've ever seen a sri lankan tamil actress in western media before

-also piggybacking off that its also so so amazing to see actual tamil being spoken on screen in a western teen comedy

-that being said tho i feel like the tamil was super minimal and would have loved to see way more of it especially w devi calling her parents amma and appa!!! also something super common w a lot of tamil kids i know is where their parents will speak to them in tamil and they'll respond in english like i wouldve loved to see conversations like that between devi and her mom

-again the whole thing w ep 4 and it seeming like a White Person's Introduction to Hinduism instead of being like. how tamil hindus actually worship yknow

-the high school age characters are cringey but maybe i'm just getting too old to watch high school shows lmao (although i only just turned 20 so idk??)

-i LOVE kamala her character feels so real to me and i would love to see a show focused more on her and her situations with both steve and prashant like the show did a good job w her like wanting to be w steve but also how she legitimately gives prashant a chance too and i LOVE love love how her and prashant decide to like date for a while and see if theyre compatible but while still having the end goal of marriage on the table from the beginning, like thats def super realistic to modern arranged marriages

-nalini sometimes feels like a typical tamil mom and then other times feels too whitewashed like idk i know a lot of ammas who've lived in the states for 20-30 years and don't act as white as nalini does sometimes

-i think the fight between devi and her mom in the last 2 eps felt super real, like my mom and i have also had similar fights like the whole thing about her losing the sheet music like i definitely felt that super hard, my mom's always been super tough on me and it def made me feel like shit at times even though i obvs know now that she cares abt me

-i love devi's dad i think the portrayal of mohan waa rly well done especially since i know so many tamil girls who are their appa's chellam lmao, overall he was a rly likeable character

-ALSO i love how nalini and mohan are shown to actually be in love like we def need more rep like that instead of parents begrudingly stuck in an arranged marriage bc its their duty (even tho that definitely happens in real life and is the case w my parents)

-i wish the show wasn't so focused on devi wanting to have sex like she's supposed to be 15!!! let her be 15!!!! let her have other interests and don't make her blow off her friends just for some guy

-i wish devi didn't hate her heritage so much :( like idk. i also went through a period where i felt too brown for white people and too white for brown people but i feel like she refuses to acknowledge ANYTHING good about her culture??? like the show took normal child of immigrant feelings and blew them way out of proportion to essentially be "i hate being indian"

-p small gripe but since the lead actress is sri lankan it would've been so cool to have a sri lankan family instead of an indian family but honestly its not that big of a deal

X - top 5-10 characters who are yoUR PRECIOUS BABIES AND YOU WILL DIE DEFENDING THEM This depends a lot on what I’m focused on at the moment (also, not all my faves count. Generally if I feel like a fave character has enough fans to defend them or whatever, I’m not gonna feel like I need to defend them. For instance, Elsa. Does Elsa have her haters? Sure. But she’s also crazy popular, so who cares if a few people hate her? That’s why she’s not on this list, even if I do like her.) but here goes, not in order tbh, just off the top of my head: Kamala Khan, always my girl, I adore her so much and I saw a post one day talking shit about her and I wanted to throttle OP. Anyway. Kamala is the best. I cannot wait for her MCU debut. Cassandra, from Tangled: the Series. I adored Cass right from the start, and of course, right from the start, I saw people shitting on her for, IDK, daring to *gasp* not like Eugene, I guess? Wow. So yeah, I’ll die defending Cass, she’s the best, even if she made some bad choices in s3 but hey. Who hasn’t stolen an ancient powerful artifact and gotten manipulated by a demonic Eldritch being, amirite? Della Duck, from Ducktales. I adore Della, she’s such an interesting and complex character who has made her fair share of mistakes but is also trying her best. The whole discourse post-”Timephoon” really showed me that she’s a character I’d die defending as well because holy shit were people shitting all over her for... daring to ground Louie, her son, for literally causing a spacetime disaster because he wanted to make money. Sigh. Anyway. I adore Della. Anna of Arendelle, from Frozen. Oh, Anna. So many people just flat out ignore you in favor of your sister, which is so unfair. Anna is wonderful and determined and optimistic and honestly such a badass? Like that (sadly deleted) scene said, her love could hold up the world. (Fun fact, part of the reason I desperately wanted my brain to get off the Frozen traintrack it was, ah, frozen on from June 2019 to January 2020 was because it resulted in me fixating on how much people flat out do not care about Anna, which wasn’t a fun time!) I am very glad she gets to be part of the bridge with Elsa but am sadly unsurprised that people continue to ignore that and just insist that it’s only Elsa who’s the Powerful, Wonderful, Most Amazing Fifth Spirit. Anna who? Granted, the movie could have emphasized that it’s Elsa and Anna who are the Fifth Spirit, together, but still. 

Alex Danvers, from Supergirl. Still my favorite character on the show! I don’t think she gets bashed as much as mostly just ignored? (I’d say poor Kara gets the brunt of the bashing. It’s very sad.) Unless Lena stans get confronted with the fact that their fave is doing some highly Unethical Things, then they start pointing to Alex for some reason and start saying, Yeah Well, Alex Works For A Shady Government Organization, So Who’s The *Real* Bad Guy Here? (Me: ....it’s still Lena, but go off, I guess.) I guess I just generally relate to her overwhelming Big Sister-ness and the high pressure she puts on herself because what a Mood, amirite? I feel that whole, anxiety that your parents will be disappointed in you because I feel that every day! I also adore how dedicated she is and how smart she is (something the fandom and the show often seem to ignore...) Connie Maheswaran, from Steven Universe. She’s the best! And she was totally the MVP of Steven Universe: Future, telling off all the Gems for making Steven’s problems about them because that was the last thing Steven needed! She’s practical and smart but at the same time so adventurous and brave and willing to stand up to protect the Earth! It’s very admirable. Steven Universe, from... you know. I’ve always liked Steven but I think Future gave me a greater appreciation for this kid. This poor kid has had to grow up so fast and basically play therapist for his Gem moms as well as for Gems who literally tried to kill him multiple times. His compassion is so admirable but wow did it result in him putting himself last! I have a soft spot for these types of characters, the characters who care so much about other people that they forget to care about themselves. (Alex Danvers is in this category also.) I know some people got mad about his downward spiral in Future, but honestly the complaints just strike me as being mad that Steven dares to have his own problems as opposed to being the Happy Boy Therapist Who Fixes Everyone Else’s Problems And Has Zero Problems Of His Own. Martha Jones, from Doctor Who. Oh, Martha Jones, you’re a star. I had a group of college friends who I watched Doctor Who with back in the day, and they hated Martha. (Most notable exchange: one of said friends saying that she thought Martha was just “too smart” to be relatable. Said friend was a physics major.) I hope the Martha hate has cooled down now because Martha always deserves so much appreciation. She had to put up with so much in s3 (incidentally, I think about s3 sometimes and I wonder why the fuck 10 is my favorite Doctor. Honestly, he’s such a dick in s3. Martha Deserved Better.), and I’m so glad she was able to be one of the few companions in NuWho with a nontraumatic exit. I hope she’s living her best life, wherever she might be now. Ninth Doctor, from Doctor Who. Gosh I love Nine. Those same college friends who hated Martha also told me to skip s1, and I’m very glad I did not listen to them. I’ve always liked Jerks with Hearts of Gold, and Nine definitely is that! I just adore how while he had such a gruff and battle-scarred demeanor, he was so sweet and genuinely kind. He’s a puppy in a leather jacket! And not only can he be genuinely soft and sweet, but he’s also just so silly sometimes? Absolutely not what you’d expect from his general appearance but he can be quite a goofball! I love that for him! And while I may not like Doctor/Rose as a ship (honestly I just don’t tend to like Doctor/companion ships at all), his relationship with Rose was so sweet. I also just enjoy that, underneath all the weariness and the surface-level cynicism, he is actually very optimistic.  Twelfth Doctor, honestly, same deal as Nine. I’m very annoyed with people who dismiss him as being the Grumpy Doctor because he’s just so genuinely kind and compassionate? He might genuinely be one of the most compassionate Doctors I’ve ever seen. He even extends kindness to his worst enemies. There’s something really beautiful about that. Being kind, even when it might ultimately backfire on you and might not even work, because why not try? He’s just a punk rock grandpa trying his best, how can you hate that? He’s got some sick guitaring skills btw. He should join a band. (I know Peter Capaldi is in a band, so that just makes me want 12 to be in a band even more.) Sometimes I think there should be a band in the Whoniverse made up of some of the Doctor’s regens but then I get stuck on who’d be in it besides 12. Maybe 2 can be in it, with his weird flute thing. Anyway. His relationship with Clara was great (mostly because of how destructive and codependent it was lmao) but I just genuinely adore his connection with Bill. I’m always here for found family, and Bill being 12′s Earth granddaughter just warms my heart so much! Thirteenth Doctor, but actually the opposite deal of Nine and Twelve. I once saw a post saying that most Doctors can be split into one of two categories: grump with a heart of gold or charming goofball with a dark side. And, despite the two characters I just listed being in the former category, I think I tend to prefer the latter? Mostly because I see plenty of Jerks With Hearts of Gold but I feel like I don’t see as many heroic charming goofballs with a dark side. Anyway, that’s absolutely what 13 is, and I appreciate the layers that she has and am constantly annoyed at people who only see her surface level cheeriness and think that’s all there is to her. I really love it when characters Aren’t What They Seem and 13 exemplifies that. To borrow a phrase from a post I saw a very long time ago, 13 is so facile. She’s so physical, taking up so much space and constantly moving, but is so touch-averse. She talks so much and is very friendly, but is incredibly emotionally constipated and keeps even her so-called best friends at an arms length. She talks a lot about hope and compassion, but boy can she be hella violent and feral! Love That For Her. T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything) Oh absolutely. Off the top of my head: Cassandra is a lesbian. And that’s that on that. 13 is touch-averse! (Also stop yelling that she needs a hug! She doesn’t want one!
