Hi Mick I'm taking you out of my notifs because ON FUCKING GOD. People who bitch about "prev tags" act like it was used as a 1:1 replacement for screenshotting the tags. No that was Not The Point. The point of prev tags was to either nod at the previous reblog or to respond to the previous reblog. I do not want to blast some random ass tag my friend/ mutual/ whoever left that only matters to us and like one other person. Some of y'all act like "prev tags" burned your crops and fucked your wife! It was never that deep! Though I understand dislike for it now that the function to look at prev is dead, I'm also kinda annoyed that the poll didn't specify pre- or postmortem. Because ngl when people were bitchy about it before the function was killed it was such a non-fucking issue. You were not getting mile long prev trails and also! alright, so i've seen a couple posts similar to this but i wanted to add some things:

if you are coming to/back to tumblr from tiktok, welcome! here are a few things that will help you get started:

1) when setting up your profile, make sure to set a pfp and banner so you look less like a bot. people don't typically show thier face here and anomyinity is encouraged, so it can be of whatever. you can also hide your likes in settings - most tumblr users do

2) you can turn on timestamps in settings. if nothing else i highly recommend turning on timestamps, or you'll be missing a lot of context on your dash (i could not tell you why timestamps are off by default.)

3) tumblr doesn't have an algorythim - it just shows posts from ppl you follow in chronological order, so likes are used moreso as a wave to a friend or a hug than to help spread the post. if you want to help spread the post you reblog it, and if a mutual is ranting about an irritating coworker you give it a like. some people also use their likes as a sort of saved posts folder

"but i see a tab that says 'for you'?" you may be saying. and yeah, that exists, but it doesn't work very well, so most users ignore it

4) Make sure to tag things correctly. Putting unrelated tags on a post won't help more people see it - you'll just end up irritating people who go to #dogs and your parrot is there instead. Tags also help people avoid triggers and topics that they don't like, so it's important to tag sensitive topics acurately since words like "kill" and "suicide" are allowed here. dodging the word itself by adding numbers or misspelling it only hurts people who find it upsetting

the only big topic that's not allowed here is (notoriously) NSFW content. you'll still see it a lot from bot accounts, ane text based NSFW is fine if tagged correctly. Illustrated NSFW sometimes makes it past the filter if artists are creative with it

5) Block tags! This is useful for mental health reasons, but also, is there a new show you haven't seen yet and you want to avoid spoilers? You can add tags to your filtered list in settings and take them out after you watch the show. Following someone who's now obsessed with a movie have no interest in but don't want to unfollow them? Just block the related tags. Love scrolling through a tag for a show you like but hate a popular ship? Block the ship tag(s)

6) every post here has a comment section, and a reblog section (unless OP turned them off). I often use the comments to talk in posts if it's a more private conversation (IE the annoying coworker example from earlier), but most talking will happen in the tags. When you reblog a post, the person you reblogged from will get a notification as well as the original poster, so you can use this to chat to the previous blogger (prev) and/or to talk to OP. I'll put some talk-y tags on here so you have an example of what that might look like (Also you can't put commas in tags. Spaces are fine but no commas. Why? great question)

7) you can also add to the main post when you reblog something. typically people do this if they have something signifigant to add to the conversation, as opposed to talking about TV characters the post reminds you of or saying smth along the lines of #same

8) you can get to the original post from a reblog chain by clicking where the date of posting is. the date will be off by default for some reason, like i said earlier. clicking this is useful if you want to read OP's tags or if you want to remove additions to the bottom of a post and reblog the original thing

yeah I mean I don't think it's always an issue, sometimes it really is funny or it really does contribute something to the post, so I wouldn't say I always hate it necessarily, but yeah sometimes a prev tags would have sufficed 😔 no shade to anyone I guess it's mainly that I have some control freak tendencies and I can't cope with it when I say something without really thinking about it too hard, and then it gets taken out of context and I'm like wtf was I talking about 😭 and I can't really correct it bc it's not my post sjslkjgdgl I like to think of the tags as a secret sanctuary for me to be quietly insane but I guess they're not really

I saw that you said a few days ago that you were new to the site and are still figuring out replying to reblogs. Didn’t see that anyone had responded so I thought I’d send you an ask as I was also new about a year ago and was so lost then. Feel free to ignore if you’ve figured it out already!

If someone has reblogged your post with tags only and you want to respond, you can just reblog your post with the tags in a picture or copied into the body. If you aren’t reblogging it from their page, it will not notify them however. If you want them to get a notification you can @ them, like @elkpoint. Adding that to the body of the post will send the user a notification. It will not in the tags, as far as I know.

You can also reblog your post from their page which should give them a notification. However, their tags will not show on your new reblog and you should still add it to the text portion of your post so that others know when you are responding to. I don’t see this done very often as either way you have to include their tags so others have context.

Last thing, if you are reblogging something for the tags the user you reblogged it from added and you want others to see it, you can do two things. The first way is the same as above - add it as a picture or text comment to your reblog. Everyone can reblog this and your picture/text will carry over. The second way is to reblog with the tags 'prev' or 'previous tags', or better yet you can copy their tags over as yours and then add ←prev to indicate they are from the person you reblogged it from without making people go check that user's reblog. This way will not be carried over if others reblog your post unless they also copy your tags into their own.

Hope this was somewhat helpful and not just a wall of text. I’m still newer so if anything is wrong others can correct me. After a year though, I feel I can at least interact with the site pretty well.

oh, uh, well, okay, i looked at a couple of places for a good and coherent explanation and urban dictionary said it best imo with this:

Blorbo Originating on Tumblr, the term 'blorbo' refers to a person's favorite or beloved character from any piece of fandom media. Can be synonymous with scrunkly, scrimblo, or eeby deeby. Daughter: "Oh my god, the blorbos from my show are having such a bad time." Mother: "Sweetie, I have NO idea what that means."

Blorbo From My Shows is a slang term for a person's favorite fictional character and is used similarly to terms such as Glup Shitto and Scrimblo Bimblo. Though initially intended as a mocking way to describe Tumblr fandoms, it began seeing more use among fandoms as it became popularized in early 2022. Origin On December 24th, 2021, Tumblr user thelustiestargonianmaid made a text post that read, "Bitches will be like 'prev tags omg' on my post and I check the preg" [SIC] "tags and it's like 'blorbo from my shows.'" Oh man, the discourse around this for the next few weeks is going to be wild! And I think Staff is well aware of that, and is not going to read the replies to this, so I'm just going to list my thoughts here. But I do believe every Tumblr user who is at all interested should read the entire thing, top to bottom.

With that, three main takeaways from this:

Tumblr isn't making enough money; they're not showing enough ads to enough people

Other social networks prove that algorithms work at getting more people to see more ads

Other social networks prove that annoying users and random passers-by works at getting more people to see more ads

I really wish these things weren't true, but I fear that they are. The conclusions from that are basically inevitable. I mean, I absolutely hope that @staff manage to find some other way to make more money that no other social network has managed before, but I'm not holding my breath.

Most of the knee-jerk replies to this post are kind of useless, dealing with age-old Tumblr minutiae. I particularly love the people who go "improve the search" and, best of all, "we don't want an algorithm, just give us better blog recommendations", as if blog recommendations were not fed by an algorithm. My hope is that Tumblr will allow old users to turn off the more annoying features. If not, yes, I will definitely start to think about things.

But more importantly in a broader context: This once again proves that all that shit people have been saying in the wake of the Reddit collapse is wrong. Tumblr isn't "the only good social network". Tumblr isn't "the one that magically survived". Tumblr is actually in the same goddamn position as Twitter and Reddit: A website designed to make a profit some day, that now has to deal with the fact that "some day" has come.

We don't notice it because in a lot of areas, Tumblr is already on the other side of this whole debacle (or part-way through). Consider how third-party clients, the thing that Twitter and Reddit both killed, were never allowed here to begin with. Or the whole porn ban.

I have seen people call this enshittification, and I can't disagree with that. But I've also seen people say, "Tumblr is not a product, you idiots, Tumblr is a community", and that's just plain wrong. Of course it's a product, run by a corporation that wants to make money. It always has been, it just has gone for long times when the big corporation was too busy with other stuff to notice it. Community doesn't pay the AWS server bills. Ultimately, making money (or at least not losing money) will always come first as long as we all continue to pledge allegiance to the big centralised sites.

(Man, I should really look into that whole Mastodon and Fediverse thing again. Setting up my own ActivityPub server is certainly way too difficult, but it sure sounds like an interesting challenge…)

Some of the issues described here absolutely sound reasonable, like how replies and reblogs and "prev tags" are a mess that is very annoying to navigate. Will the solution be any better? I have doubts, but we'll see.

Overall, I fully understand the impulse to go, "I hate you idiots, I hate that you're trying to make money". But obviously staff can't and won't listen to that, and getting angry at them treating Tumblr like a product now, in 2023, is not productive.

Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience. 

Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content. 

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Our Guiding Principles

To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.

Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Retain and grow our creator base.

Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.

Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.

Principle 1: Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Tumblr has a “top of the funnel” issue in converting non-users into engaged logged-in users. We also have not invested in industry standard SEO practices to ensure a robust top of the funnel. The referral traffic that we do get from external sources is dispersed across different pages with inconsistent user experiences, which results in a missed opportunity to convert these users into regular Tumblr users. For example, users from search engines often land on pages within the blog network and blog view—where there isn’t much of a reason to sign up. 

We need to experiment with logged-out tumblr.com to ensure we are capturing the highest potential conversion rate for visitors into sign-ups and log-ins. We might want to explore showing the potential future user the full breadth of content that Tumblr has to offer on our logged-out pages. We want people to be able to easily understand the potential behind Tumblr without having to navigate multiple tabs and pages to figure it out. Our current logged-out explore page does very little to help users understand “what is Tumblr.” which is a missed opportunity to get people excited about joining the site.

Actions & Next Steps

Improving Tumblr’s search engine optimization (SEO) practices to be in line with industry standards.

Experiment with logged out tumblr.com to achieve the highest conversion rate for sign-ups and log-ins, explore ways for visitors to “get” Tumblr and entice them to sign up.

Principle 2: Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

We need to ensure the highest quality user experience by presenting fresh and relevant content tailored to the user’s diverse interests during each session. If the user has a bad content experience, the fault lies with the product.

The default position should always be that the user does not know how to navigate the application. Additionally, we need to ensure that when people search for content related to their interests, it is easily accessible without any confusing limitations or unexpected roadblocks in their journey.

Being a 15-year-old brand is tough because the brand carries the baggage of a person’s preconceived impressions of Tumblr. On average, a user only sees 25 posts per session, so the first 25 posts have to convey the value of Tumblr: it is a vibrant community with lots of untapped potential. We never want to leave the user believing that Tumblr is a place that is stale and not relevant.

Deliver great content each time the app is opened.

Make it easier for users to understand where the vibrant communities on Tumblr are. 

Improve our algorithmic ranking capabilities across all feeds. 

Principle 3: Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Part of Tumblr’s charm lies in its capacity to showcase the evolution of conversations and the clever remarks found within reblog chains and replies. Engaging in these discussions should be enjoyable and effortless.

Unfortunately, the current way that conversations work on Tumblr across replies and reblogs is confusing for new users. The limitations around engaging with individual reblogs, replies only applying to the original post, and the inability to easily follow threaded conversations make it difficult for users to join the conversation.

Actions & Next Steps

Address the confusion within replies and reblogs.

Improve the conversational posting features around replies and reblogs. 

Allow engagements on individual replies and reblogs.

Make it easier for users to follow the various conversation paths within a reblog thread. 

Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads. 

Explore the feasibility of removing duplicate reblogs within a user’s Following feed. 

Principle 4: Retain and grow our creator base.

Creators are essential to the Tumblr community. However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base.  

Being a new creator on Tumblr can be intimidating, with a high likelihood of leaving or disappointment upon sharing creations without receiving engagement or feedback. We need to ensure that we have the expected creator tools and foster the rewarding feedback loops that keep creators around and enable them to thrive.

The lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed (“Following”), perpetuating a cycle where popular blogs continue to gain more visibility at the expense of helping new creators. To address this, we need to prioritize supporting and nurturing the growth of new creators on the platform.

It is also imperative that creators, like everyone on Tumblr, feel safe and in control of their experience. Whether it be an ask from the community or engagement on a post, being successful on Tumblr should never feel like a punishing experience.

Actions & Next Steps

Get creators’ new content in front of people who are interested in it. 

Improve the feedback loop for creators, incentivizing them to continue posting.

Build mechanisms to protect creators from being spammed by notifications when they go viral.

Expand ways to co-create content, such as by adding the capability to embed Tumblr links in posts.

Principle 5: Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Push notifications and emails are essential tools to increase user engagement, improve user retention, and facilitate content discovery. Our strategy of reaching out to you, the user, should be well-coordinated across product, commercial, and marketing teams.

Our messaging strategy needs to be personalized and adapt to a user’s shifting interests. Our messages should keep users in the know on the latest activity in their community, as well as keeping Tumblr top of mind as the place to go for witty takes and remixes of the latest shows and real-life events.  

Most importantly, our messages should be thoughtful and should never come across as spammy.  

Actions & Next Steps

Conduct an audit of our messaging strategy.

Address the issue of notifications getting too noisy; throttle, collapse or mute notifications where necessary.  

Identify opportunities for personalization within our email messages. 

Test what the right daily push notification limit is. 

Send emails when a user has push notifications switched off.

Principle 6: Performance, stability and quality.

The stability and performance of our mobile apps have declined. There is a large backlog of production issues, with more bugs created than resolved over the last 300 days. If this continues, roughly one new unresolved production issue will be created every two days. Apps and backend systems that work well and don't crash are the foundation of a great Tumblr experience. Improving performance, stability, and quality will help us achieve sustainable operations for Tumblr.

Improve performance and stability: deliver crash-free, responsive, and fast-loading apps on Android, iOS, and web.

Improve quality: deliver the highest quality Tumblr experience to our users. 

Move faster: provide APIs and services to unblock core product initiatives and launch new features coming out of Labs.

no one asked but I’ve had this blog for 10 years and I actually don’t mind prev tags, but it is absolutely not a REPLACEMENT for screenshots. here is my rule of thumb:

if the tags are about a personal/private experience, I’m more inclined to use prev tags. yes if they’re posting their tags online then technically anyone could view them, but it’s like…. the difference between someone sharing something to a class of 25 people during a discussion and saying “good point so true” vs filming what they said and posting it to tiktok.

if the tags are an inside joke and only me or a couple other people would get it, I’m using prev tags or a “SO-AND-SO YOUR TAGS” (and in the same breath adding a response)

if the tags are blorbo related and maybe it’s a fandom I know my followers like, but is far from generally liked, and I don’t want to derail op’s post, I’ll use prev tags (or repeat them)

if the tags would derail op’s post in general. maybe the post was about something important, and the tags are also important but a bit irrelevant, and would do better on their own post. prev tags

if the tags are A Lot, like maybe a bit Too nsfw for what I typically like to have on my blog, but reading them suckerpunched me and I want to inflict them on anyone who’s willing to look, I may use prev tags (case by case)

if the tags add NECESSARY CONTEXT or ENHANCE THE PUNCHLINE, they are getting screenshotted

if it’s a conversation, and it’s better if people can see the full thread rather than just @‘ing people in the replies, I’ll screenshot

if I was browsing the tags and found multiple very funny ones, I will screenshot my favorites

I DO screenshot tags like 80% of the time. They are still my preferred method of tag peer review.

I think what people are forgetting is why we like writing comments in tags in the first place. it’s because they are impermanent. if every prev tags situation was screenshotted and added to a post, it would actively make a lot of posts worse. No one wants unfunny additions tacked on,or two people that keep reblogging your posts over and over to rp their omegaverse rpf or whatever.

Let me preface by saying I understand missing the old vocaloid/vsynth community. Hell, I miss it too, a lot. But a lot of people who say this I feel are just blinded by nostalgia, because let's be real, the old community kind of REALLY sucked

The normalization of problematic age gaps and sexualization of minors and other terrible things is something else that comes to mind immediately. With this I am not judging every single person that still listens to some of these old songs that would've been more questioned had they been released today, but I am still using it to drive my point home. "I miss the old fandom" You miss the fandom that popularized a song glorifying incest to the point it got added to the Project Diva games?

This was a problem of the old Internet in general too, but also the spreading of art without giving credit to the artist was so rampant it's another remaining problem. (And yes, removing credit to artists is still a problem today, but trust me it was SO bad before, at least we're a little bit better now)

I can think of a few more things but I can't word them well, so I'm ending the post here. Basically, how I feel about people that talk about missing the old vocaloid community a bit too much is the same way I feel about the people that go on about "vocaloid being dead/a dying fandom". Like hmm, there may be some truth in there... but are you sure about that?

I absolutely seethe with RAGE every time I see another stupid fucker regurgitate that baseless myth that "prev tags are an invasive species brought here by twitter migrants" or whatever. That doesn't even make any fucking sense because twitter tags don't work that way.

In fact I'm pretty damn sure that newbies barely know how tumblr tags function, let alone be competent enough to invent a custom that requires knowledge of how reblog chains work. Remember those tutorial posts where we had to teach newbies how REBLOGGING even works? And you think they'll be smart enough to invent prev tagging???

If you're gonna hate on prev tags then at least get it right. Prev tagging was invented (or at the very least, popularized)* by spn tumblr during the height of the post-nov 5th spn renaissance, particularly at the period when the "[insert character] coded" lingo was getting popular.

*(This is a first-person account of the history of prev tagging, and should be taken with a grain of salt. If my memory serves right, the very first instances of prev tags were used to account for tags you like or agree with, without unnecessarily adding said tags to the main body of the post. "Do not cite the deep magic to me" yada yada. See links below for more info.)

Prev tagging arose as a response to a particular need: of agreeing to someone's tags without unnecessarily adding said tags to someone else's post. Like. Say, for example, that your mutual reblogged a post and tagged it as "dean coded", and you find that hilarious in the context of the post.

For the "SCREENSHOTS ONLY" crowd, I have a question for you. Would you screenshot a tag that short, and ADD said screenshot to the actual post?

Prev tags avoids the need for derailing a stranger's post, while at the same time still expressing your appreciation to your mutual.

Prev tagging wasn't made by "twitter migrants" or whatever strawman you want to invent, that shit is locally sourced babyyyyyy.

Y/N had left Yoongi to himself, sitting in the living room of the hotel they stayed at. She carefully packed all the new clothes they had bought Yoongi into his own suitcase, agreeing with herself to make sure they were ready for him to use after they got home. She had left out a pair of pyjamas for Yoongi to put on when he wanted to go to bed, as she would sneak a look at the closed door every now and then.

Y/N didn’t really know if she should go talk to him or leave him be. She knew that if it was her that had locked herself away from everyone, she would have wanted everyone to leave her alone.

Before Y/N thought of dinner, she got a message from her mother, reminding her to be ready early so they could leave quickly. Y/N was quick to agree, wanting to have Yoongi finally home and get comfortable in his new life.

It was more then just Yoongi being comfortable in his new life, but also Y/N being comfortable in her newfound freedom. Waking up in the morning and walking around her garden, unsupervised, not needing to constantly be kept under lock and key. Y/N could, if she so wished, run in the dirt, barefooted and without a care in the world with Yoongi by her side.

He may not know it yet, and he maybe not ever understand the weight of it, but Yoongi was the single most important person to Y/N and would remain such until her last breath.

As Y/N struggled to lift the now full and heavy suitcase into a standing position, she heard the door behind her open. A sigh was heard behind her before arms move next to her own, righting the suitcase to the upright position. Looking up, she gave a soft smile to Yoongi who looked down at her as they both hunched over the large case before, he straightened up.

“So?” Yoongi asked as if it was a whole question with context.

“So what?”

“When are you taking me back?”

Y/N finally looked Yoongi and into the open door towards Yoongi’s bed. The loan backpack he had claim too was neatly sitting at the foot of the bed, just sitting. This caused Y/N to look back at Yoongi with confusion, her mouth opening and closing like a fish. She didn’t exactly know what to say, nor what to really ask him.

“When are you taking me back to the shelter?” Yoongi clarified when Y/N didn’t say anything. “Surely you don’t want me here anymore.”

“Why would you think I didn’t?” Y/N finally asked him.

“You heard him, what I’ve done-”

“What you’ve done to survive.” Y/N spoke quickly, now it was Yoongi’s turn to be confused. “There are some things, things that people do out of survival, purely out of instincts that they do to survive in a life that has only bought harm to them.”

Yoongi couldn’t hold Y/N’s eyes for long, opting to move his eyes away from hers and to what surrounded them. He could see that there was a small pile of clothes next to Y/N’s feet, what could only be something for him. The material looked soft, softer than anything he had ever owned or touched before; sat next to a woman he would never have thought to meet in this life.

“Yoongi…” Y/N pushed the suitcase out of the way, taking Yoongi’s large hand in her own. “The things you’ve done in desperation to make it to the next day will never make me look at you differently then the man I know you to be.”

“Do you really believe that?” Yoongi asked, his eyes flicking towards Y/N’s smaller hands in his, his ears and tail twitching at the warm contact.

“I believe anything is possible. Just tell me who you want to be, and I will treat you as such.” Y/N finally caught Yoongi’s eye, smiling softly at the man before her.

Yoongi simply nodded. He had never just been himself before. He was never allowed to just be himself. So, he didn’t know who he was supposed to be, nor who he was.

Smiling down at Y/N, Yoongi hoped he would find who it is he truly is.

“Now, I have some clothes for you.” Y/N turned, picking up the pile of clothes, sitting them in Yoongi’s arms. “They are pyjamas for you to sleep in tonight. I’ll order some dinner for us both. We have to be up early for our flight home.”

With a small smile from Yoongi, Y/N pushed him into his room for him to change as she moved to call room service for dinner. Soon after their first meal together they found comfort in their own beds before it was time to wake up. The knocking on Yoongi’s door at him almost fall out of his bed, only relaxing when he heard Y/N’s voice.

“Yoongi, are you awake yet? We will have to leave soon.”

Y/N got back a few grunts and groans of approval before footsteps came closer to the door. When it opened, Y/N saw Yoongi, eyes still closed, his tail wrapped around his waist as he leaned against the door.

“Good morning.” Y/N laughed softly at just how adorable Yoongi looked.

“-Morning…” Yoongi mumbled, lifting his head to meet Y/N’s own eyes.

“If you would like breakfast before going to the airport, you’ll have to come out now.” Y/N spoke softly, not wanting to scare him.

“Okay,” Yoongi mumbled with a nod before turning and shutting his door, going to change.

Y/N had been up for about half an hour now, already dressed, luggage at the door, breakfast on the table. She was excited to get back home, to get back to her own bed. She was ready to start her new life with Yoongi next to her.

Yoongi soon came back from his room, eyes still closed, but fresh faced and clothed, nonetheless. With a tired smile, Yoongi sat next to Y/N, happily and lazily eating the food she sat in front of him.

The silence between them was comfortable, both of them eating and simply enjoying a presence that didn’t command anything from them. As they finished eating, Yoongi’s eyes finally opening completely, a knock came from the door. Y/N smiled, placing her hand on Yoongi’s as he jumped slightly, before moving towards the door.

Opening the door, she was meet by Hotel staff; “Hello ma’am, we are here to collect your luggage.”

“Of course, please come in.” Y/N allowed the staff to pack their luggage to take down to the waiting cars for them, as she moved to Yoongi. “Grab anything you want to keep with you on the flight.”

Yoongi was quick to take his backpack, Y/N saw him check that everything he needed was in there. He was quick to make it back to Y/N, standing next to her for a few moments before he saw her hands. The collar and leash that he needed to wear in public was something to weight any hybrid down, but Yoongi also knew the consequences of having no collar. He preferred the collar.

“I’m sorry, it’s just we’re going out.”

“It’s okay, Y/N.” Yoongi leaned down a little, offering his neck to her. “I understand.”

Yoongi offered Y/N a small smile before her warm hands moved around his neck, placing the soft collar around him. Just as she connected the leash to the collar, Y/N’s mother and what Yoongi assumed to be her father came into the room as the staff left.

“So, is this the boy?” The man asked, smiling at his daughter.

“Dad…” Y/N straightened the collar on Yoongi as she smiled towards her father, helping Yoongi to stand next to her. “This is Yoongi.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Her father walked closer to Y/N and Yoongi, offering his hand to Yoongi.

“Don’t.” Y/N’s mother barely looked up from her phone as she pulled her husbands hand back. “We don’t have time for niceties. We have a plane to catch.”

in a kinder universe mary doesn’t walk in on azazel. she never burns. she and john divorce after a few years, but sam and dean grow up happy for the most part. things aren’t perfect, but they aren’t an endless string of motel rooms, killing people that your father says aren’t quite people before age 10, sips of whiskey far too young while your brother’s shaky hands stitch up a bullet hole in your arm, giving up on making friends because you’ve never stayed anywhere longer than a month.

there’s the mostly normal stuff - teenage angst and blowout fights, slammed doors and blasting rock music, first loves and breakups, and a nagging thought that never quite lets up in sam’s mind that he’s evil deep down, something that twists in his gut at the way mary looks at him sometimes - but everyone’s okay. when sam goes to college, he comes home for breaks and birthdays, makes quick calls to his mother every sunday and and long ones to dean whenever he needs to complain about his roommates. he and john don’t have the warmest relationship, get into biting arguments about politics whenever they talk, but they do talk.

but no universe has ever been truly kind. sam disappears from his apartment a few days before his 24th birthday and is found dead in a ghost town in south dakota a week later. mary leaves identical voicemails to john and dean. “i’m going to fix this.” they don’t see her again.

i want it to be very clear that while i do think sam & dean’s relationship is toxic that is not at all because they are each other’s most important person. it’s not toxic to have your most important person be a family member or friend instead of a romantic partner. it’s not toxic to want to spend your life with someone in a non-romantic non-sexual context, or to want to live with someone who is not a romantic partner. it’s just toxic to be abusive or bring someone back from the dead against their will or trick them into being possessed. it’s also toxic to be serial killers.

Edward would’ve been happier if Bella died.

Not just in the ‘oh her precious ~soul~’ way - Edward prioritized his suffering above his love as his believed penance for being sub-human, and his love for Bella was not just grounded in romantic attraction to her, but the specific suffering she brought to his life by being unattainable and not permanent. Part of why Edward’s attraction towards Bella was so powerful was because he could not have her - initially because he was absolutely convinced he would kill her. Then, when he built up the strength to not feel the crushing need to kill her on sight, he couldn’t have her because the gap between their species was too great. Then, and most importantly, because he was not good enough for her. This is the most important stage, because it’s one that no one but him can overcome, and besides Bella’s empathetic pain, it doesn’t really hurt anyone else. The suffering is primarily borne by him.

Edward spends the next three books sabotaging - I think somewhat subconsciously - his own happiness because he doesn’t think he deserves to feel it. In New Moon, when Jasper almost attacks Bella, there is no new risk. Jasper was always on edge, Bella was always human, and thanks to her clumsiness she was bound to get hurt in the Cullen’s presence at some point. Bella really did not get that hurt and she would’ve only had the paper cut if Edward hadn’t overreacted anyway. But he still leaves because he will choose the option that causes himself the most pain. We know from Midnight Sun that he was planning to leave her before this even happened, so this was not a startling event that woke him up - he seeks out his own suffering. And I do think that he genuinely thought Bella would get over him. He knew he would cause her pain, but he also knew ‘his kind doesn’t forget’. He thought he would be awash in his own pain for eternity, missing Bella, longing for her, hating himself for not being the human that could be with her, while she’d be upset for a month or two then go out with someone else. He hates himself, that much is clear, and he doesn’t think he actually deserves love and happiness.

Bella made her acceptance of his vampirism & her willingness to be turned so clear early on - would not any other Cullen have been thrilled to find someone who wanted to be with them, forever, so badly? But if Bella became a vampire easily, willingly, and then had forever together, then there would be no more suffering, he would have nothing to be guilty over. He has to believe she doesn’t know what she’s getting herself into, that he’s tricking her into this life she doesn’t actually want, because accepting that she’s making this choice freely and independently (which the reality of that is a separate post in and of itself) means that he did nothing wrong; that they’re just in love and that’s the end of it.

Additionally, I think part of him likes having her in a ‘fragile’ state, because then he has a purpose - he has to protect her, monitor her, guard her against the world and against himself. He never stops seeing himself as a monster, and he sees any time with her as an indulgence he should not be permitted but is taking anyway. Once she’s no longer human, she doesn’t need his protection. I don’t think he would’ve killed her/wanted to, but the idea of having her always out of his reach, the clock ticking, her growing older so quickly before his eyes, and then dying & being lost to him forever? Well, that’s misery sweet enough to drink.
