"Do you want to know a secret?" Stede whispers in his hear, and Ed's mind is instantly in overdrive, goosebumps erupting all over his skin, knees going a little weak, and he's glad Stede at least had the decency to push him into a wall before he decided to scramble his entire brain. 
He gives the tiniest nod, can't manage to get any words out.
"I love you, you nut. I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
Ed startles so badly at the words that he almost headbutts Stede again by accident. 
"None of this means anything to me without you." Oh god, there's more? "What would I want with fame and fortune if I couldn't share them with you? I already left everything I owned behind once, Ed. I'd do it again in a heartbeat if keeping it meant losing you."
Ed started crying at some point during his speech and he barely even noticed. His mind is flooding with Stede and love and Stede loving him enough to give up the entire world for him. For Ed. Not Blackbeard, not the legend but the man. All he's wanted since he woke up from his trip to the gravy basket is to be warm and safe and stop having to work so fucking hard for everything. And here Stede is, offering himself heart and soul, all of Ed's wildest fantasies coming true before his eyes.
"Marry me." Stede says next.
Ed gasps.
"What-"
He needs clarification, needs to know if he's hallucinated this entire conversation and those two words in particular, manifested them out of thin air just from how badly he wants to hear them.
"Marry me, Ed. Let's spend the rest of our lives together. We can do whatever you want, keep sailing or retire or run away to fucking China after all. We can figure it all out together. We'll discuss it over tea and draw up an entire plan. This isn't a whim for me." He's staring intently into Ed's eyes, so fucking earnest that Ed can't do anything but believe him, believe he means everything he said and he won't panic this time and leave him stranded with all this love in his hands.
They'll discuss it over tea, ha. Ed's marrying a madman. Because he will marry him, come hell or high water. He'll put a ring on Stede's finger and say his vows and tie their whole lives together as tightly as their bodies are right now.
"Yes," he says, smile radiant on his lips.
"Yes!" Stede cheers. And this time there's no running away unless it's hand in hand towards their shared future.

here’s the thing.
if you’re one of the people celebrating our flag means death’s cancellation for whatever reason right now, i need you to realize that this is just a sign that whatever you love is next.
and i’m not saying that out of spite. having your favourite show cancelled is awful, i wouldn’t wish it on anyone. but if our little-gay-pirate-show-that-could can’t get its third and final season, the future of queer media is extremely grim.
ofmd was the definition of a sleeper hit. hbo max had no faith in it when the first season came out. it gained popularity purely through word-of-mouth. but it became one of max’s biggest shows, and it’s since been marketed as their flagship series.
it was the #1 most in-demand series in the world for 8 weeks (7 of those weeks consecutively). it’s currently in the 99.7th percentile of the comedy genre, meaning it’s in higher demand than 99.7% of all comedy series in the u.s. it has a 94% audience and critics score on rotten tomatoes. it’s the most in-demand hbo original series even above euphoria, succession, and the last of us.
it was nominated for 16 awards for the first season alone, including a GLAAD award and a peabody award. the second season was just nominated for an art directors guild award, which it was previously nominated for and won in the same category for season one.
besides awards, ofmd is critically-acclaimed and praised for its representation (including a cast of majority queer, bipoc, and disabled characters) and themes of anti-colonialism, challenging gender norms/toxic masculinity, and self-discovery/acceptance. it also has a diverse team of directors and writers consisting of several bipoc, women, and queer/trans/non-binary people.
on top of all of this, the plan for the show all along was only ever for three seasons. david jenkins only wanted three seasons for the full romcom structure to tell ed and stede’s story. that’s it. nothing more.
this isn’t an attempt to make you care about the show. but ofmd’s cancellation isn’t just a loss for the fanbase and the cast/crew. it’s a sign that it does not matter how successful or profitable shows highlighting lgbtq+ (or otherwise inclusive) narratives are or how many big names are involved. ofmd would not have been cancelled if it were a straight romcom. they would’ve magically found the budget. but corporate greed doesn’t care about us. they have no respect for queer people or queer media. and in the age of streaming, it’s only a matter of time until we lose all of it.

It's so interesting to me that Izzy's suicide attempt wound heals very slowly, and leaves a big visible scar, in a show where characters regularly shrug off much worse injuries. You can even see it under his drag makeup:

Injuries in OFMD seem to have a physical impact on the character more or less in proportion to their psychological impact, regardless of how serious the wound should realistically be. In S1E4, Stede spends one episode injured after getting stabbed and hanged due to his hubris and incompetence, but then he's fine after hanging out with Ed for a while and getting some validation. In S1E6, Stede spends an entire night impaled on a sword, but he doesn't even seem to be in pain and suffers no lasting damage because it's not a psychological wound. And of course, in S2E3, Ed comes back to life more or less physically intact after realizing that Stede is there waiting for him, even though he should have been very, very dead after what the crew did to him.
But all of Izzy's injuries have a realistic impact on his body, in a way that isn't the case for any other character. I think some of that can be attributed to his Only Human In A Muppet Movie status, but it's also because of his uniquely fucked up relationship with Ed.
Ed causes all of Izzy's injuries, and I think they affect Izzy so permanently because of how deeply invested and dependent Izzy is on his relationship with Ed; his whole sense of self is bound up in it. Those wounds represent the toxicity of their relationship and how much it's damaged Izzy.
In contrast, when Izzy shoots Ed in the arm, the wound doesn't seem to stick around; we never see any evidence of it after that moment. Ed's actions have a far deeper impact on Izzy than Izzy's actions have on Ed, because there's always been an inequality in their relationship; Izzy cares about Ed much more than Ed cares about him, and that's the fundamental problem for Izzy.
Izzy post S2E4 has made a deliberate decision to move on from what happened between him and Ed, because it was so big and so awful that it's not the kind of thing he could either just forgive or ignore. And I think his Ed-induced suicide attempt was kind of the final straw; it's after that that he goes on deck and shoots Ed, which David Jenkins has described as Izzy "breaking up" with him. I don't think Izzy's stopped being in love with Ed, but he's stopped trying to influence his behavior as much, or even spend much time with him at all, and he's spending time with other characters instead.

But for all his change in behavior, every time he's on screen, we get a visual reminder of what happened, in both his leg and the scar on his face. Both are emphatically visible in the above scene, when Izzy and Stede are talking about Ed. It's a reminder of the impetus for Izzy's character arc this season, his relationship with Ed, and I think it's an indication that he hasn't fully healed psychologically, and probably never will. All he can do is keep moving forward.

Our flag means death is a show about how people who were miserable and stagnating alone can come together and change through the magic of community, love and support. They set up this silly joke about Buttons being a sea witch who can turn into animals just so they could have Ed witness the transformation (that Buttons needs to go through so he can love his lover as she deserves, because his current form makes the relationship unsustainable) and have his own epiphany about how people do, actually, change. If Buttons can change, Ed is allowed to change. He can trust that Stede has changed too, and will continue to change as their relationship evolves. He can learn what he needs to and go through his own transformation so he can love his own love as he deserves, so that they can have the fulfilling relationship they both want.

The OFMD writers were really onto something when they named the season 1 finale "wherever you go, there you are" because it's becoming more and more apparent that that phrase completely sums up Ed's arc in that it's the thing he is consistently most unable to accept. He has all these different personas that represent different parts of himself and every time he's unhappy with his circumstances (which is often) it's suddenly time to make the switch. He shaves his beard and changes his clothes and supposedly he's not Blackbeard anymore but then he feels shitty so he draws the beard back on and adds dramatic eyeliner but then he feels guilty about the way he acted so he throws his clothes in the ocean and just... I think by the end of the show Ed really needs to realize that it doesn't matter if he has a beard or what he's wearing or if he's calling himself "Jeff" or "the Kraken" or running off to become a fisherman because he will always be the same person who killed his father and who was left by Stede and who did terrible things to the crew of the Revenge and who believes himself to be unlovable. Wherever Ed goes, he will always have to be with himself, and running away is never going to be the thing that stops him from hating himself.

Izzy Hands and Mary Bonnet have so many parallels between them that it’s wild. Emotionally distant husband (Izzy is wife-coded AF so it’s fair to make this comparison with Ed) who they’ve been with for a long time. Their husbands are very unhappy with their life. They’re both having to tell their husbands to pay attention to them, do what they’re supposed to, stop being so whim-prone. Izzy is the one tending to the crew, reminding Ed about their welfare, and Ed seems too distracted to really care. Mary is the one taking care of the kids and has to ask Stede multiple times to play with them, and he seems far too distracted to care (though he does briefly). Neither Izzy nor Mary are happy either, but they’re still trying to make it work beyond what their husbands are. And eventually, Izzy and Mary’s husbands leave them for something ‘better’ unexpectedly, and in a way that’s a betrayal to Izzy and Mary. When Stede panics after Chauncey kidnaps him in s1, he goes back to Mary and tries to pick up where he left off but it’s clear he’s not wanted by Mary. When Stede doesn’t show up on the beach, Ed goes back to Izzy and tries to pick up where he left off, but it’s clear this gentle version of Ed isn’t who Izzy wants him to be. When they finally have distance between themselves and their husbands, they both find themselves and are finally happy toward their end of the time on the show. Mary has her painting and her found family of widows and Doug. Izzy does drag and sings and whittles and has his found family of the crew. They both support their former husbands’ new love at the end of their arcs.
Izzy and Mary’s husbands fell in love with each other, but only one of these characters got to be happy at the end of their very parallel arcs in a way where it felt complete to end their time on the show.
Idk. It’s something.

What Exactly Did David Jenkins Say?
Look, I'm still staunchly of the opinion that Word of God statements and creator interviews are overvalued in fandom, especially when they get pulled out mostly as gotchas without then continuing to analyze whether or not the show canon is successful at getting across that same message. Death of the Author is good, actually, and we should remember that. But they are worth looking at in the context of evaluating intent vs execution, and for future speculation - just, like, please with less of the whole mile high pedestal idolizing and backlash cycles.
But if overvalued "Word of God" is annoying, then overvalued "supposed creator statements that have gone through three rounds of telephone and any given blogger has only heard about a quarter of them, which they'll use confidently anyway" is worse. So, since I'd already looked up interviews for various reasons...
Here is a fairly comprehensive list of interviews David Jenkins has given and statements he's made during them, presented without commentary (save curating which statements get highlighted). All provided with links. I definitely missed some, so if you have any that you want to add, please do - though if you could trim off any commentary and save it for tags / your own post with a link that would be cool.
