✨Q Rated: The Rise of Kyoshi
A✨Q - Amazing & Queer, Recommended
Welcome to Lesbian Trash Panda, where I recommend the finest treasures and the best trash a gay raccoon can find. Today’s entry is the first book in the duology about everyone’s favourite Earthbender Avatar - The Rise of Kyoshi!
Summary: If you watched Avatar: The Last Airbender, you’ll be familiar with Kyoshi, the intimidating 300-year-old badass who brought balance to the world two cycles before Avatar Aang.
Kyoshi has a fandom reputation as a merciless killer, but this book — you really see why!
Haha, just kidding, she’s a bisexual simp. The murder is only a side quest.
Tumblr media
“The Rise of Kyoshi” follows the longest-lived Avatar from humble beginnings as an orphan to her youth as a servant girl to discovering her gifts, joining a bandit gang, fighting pirates, and taking on some of the most brutal villains in the Avatar universe. Also, she is a huuuuuuuge dork for Rangi, her Firebender bodyguard/friend-who-is-girl/maybe more??? This book is 60% revenge fantasy, 40% pining teenager in love. Kyoshi is part Batman part Sappho and we love her for it
Why you should read it: Did the Batman/Sappho comparison not do it for you? Ok, here’s some more convincing.
Avatar the Last Airbender is one of the best-loved animated shows of all time. It blends the best of eastern and western animation & storytelling conventions to create a universe that is rich in beauty, lore, character, and heart. “The Rise of Kyoshi” adds new historical context and intrigue to the Avatar world while remaining exciting and engaged in its own narrative.
Kyoshi is adorable, and that’s not something you would guess based on appearances in the show. She’s complex and has a lot on her plate and she is frequently put in no-win situations, in a way we’ve never quite seen before in this world. I appreciate when a story is willing to set up a dilemma and follow through on it, instead of pulling a last minute fake-out (cough cough Legend of Korea S1). There are still surprises, but she is forced to make tough decisions and those decisions have consequences.
Rangi is also a great addition to the Avatar universe. Fans of KorraxAsami who were disappointed by how the relationship was censored in the animated show will delighted by how open and honest Kyoshi is about her feelings for Rangi, and I love her for it. I am impressed by the complexity of queer relationships in the Avatar universe - the Legend of Korea tie-in comic Turf Wars gave a brief history lesson on how the four nations feel about it traditionally, and it’s clear the creators put thought and attention into the development of that element of this universe. I am glad they get to explore this part of their world more here, in an avenue where they didn’t have to bind themselves according to homophobic advertising standards.
The book is also funny. It has that classic Avatar humour with some added, “Oh, Kyoshi, you gay sad sack!” Lots of fun characters, exciting moments, and surprising depth.
I just finished reading it to my partner and she loved it. Hopefully you will too! Get it at your local library or buy it, I dunno.
Content Warnings: Surprisingly grim violence, including war crimes - more so than the animated series; for teen readers
Recommended for: Fans of Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, fans of historical fantasy, people who wish Bruce Wayne was a gangly teenage girl and Alfred was a badass teenage girl

After reading the Chronicles Of The Avatar books, I have come to one conclusion: F.C. Yee deserves all of the praise. Like, his books are so good. I mean, focusing on the stories of the previous avatars was just genius, but Yee did an amazing job. His writing style is so easy to get into and he balances the different tones in his books seamlessly.
The Dawn Of Yangchen is slower than The Rise Of Kyoshi and The Shadow Of Kyoshi, which normally I would complain about, but the pacing fits with the stories he's telling. The Kyoshi novels were more fast paced because Kyoshi herself is engaging in more adventure and throughout the novels, there's an underlying sense of urgency. In Yangchen's novel, the story is slower cause it's more about politics and espionage, but it never feels like the story is dragging.
The action scenes are just as engaging as the scenes where characters are just having conversations with each other. Besides everything that Yee does amazingly at-exposition, setting, detail, humor, foreshadowing, personal stakes, differentiating multiple point-of-views, character development-, my favorite thing that he writes are the characters themselves.
In the past, I've read books by the same authors who continually make their characters feel like the exact same person, but F.C. Yee makes all the characters in Chronicles Of The Avatar so uniquely different in their personalities, their mindsets, their motivations, just everything.
Yangchen is distinct from Kuruk who's distinct from Kyoshi who's distinct from Aang. They're all the same and opposites of each other, and Yee makes us root for all of them. Yangchen is a compassionate women worn-out from the cruelties of the people. We want to see her unveil the corrup politicians and make Bin-Er a better place. Kyoshi is a strong women born from tragedy and heartbreak. We want to see Kyoshi bring justice down upon Jianzhu and get her best friend back. We want to see them be the people that we know them as. But we see them be young and make mistakes and the complexities of human nature.
But it's not just the Avatars.
The companions are just as memorable. Proud, confident Kirima; brave, perfectionist Wong; brash, loyal Lek; patient, caring Jinpa; and fierce, loving Rangi. Tayagum and Akuudan being the loyal warriors, Jujinta being the unexpected fearsome ally, and Kavik being the conflicted friend turned betrayer. They all have their places where they fit and not one person feels unnecessary.
The familial units are also very interesting. Kyoshi's parents leaving her and Kelsaang picking up the slack and being her new father. Yun having Jianzhu be the one there for him to succeed (and then to die). Rangi's conflicted relationship with her mother and how her legacy affects her. Kavik's distance from his parents, and his conflict between his brother and Yangchen. Yangchen's relationship with her sister and how that affects her relationship with spirits (and everyone else).
The camaraderie and relationship growth and joy and relationship deterioration and bittersweetness and tragedy of them all.
Even the antagonists and villains feel more than one-dimensional. We see Jianzhu cause tragedy in his righteous mindset. We watch Yun turn from a hero to a villain. We witness the Shangs and Zongdus and every other corrupt person in power.
They all feel like people and not cardboard cutouts, and I applaud F.C. Yee for all that he's done.

The Kyoshi Warrior uniform.
link to an ao3 fic based on this
Tumblr media
Aang: So you are a fan of Kyoshi? Azula: I already made that joke a while ago. Aang: It wasn’t a joke. Why are you dressed like that if you don’t? Azula: Being able to say “I told you so”. Aang: I’m going to change to Kyoshi because I do really think she’s going to enjoy it. Azula: What are- Kyoshi: Explain yourself.
Azula: The last time I used this I conquered Ba Sing Se without any battle. I want to prove to my girlfriend that every time I use this I achieve something. Kyoshi: Umh. Azula: I should add I was fourteen when I did that, so I also want to know what I’m capable of right now. Kyoshi: Wait, are you that mad lady who killed Aang? The one with blue fire and lightning. Azula: Yes. Kyoshi: I’m sure Rangi would love to meet you. You know- Azula, fangirl mode: Do you really think so? Agni, she was amazing. I read everything about her. I have had this portrait hidden in my room since I was little. She bent white fire, she had to be a prodigy, and that has blown my mind since I was a child.  Kyoshi: Azula, still in that mode: And I hate when the documents about her don't tell all the truth. You know that you two were really close friends who lived together and then they wrote something like, we don’t have any kind of data about possible romantic relationships she was in. NO SHIT CAUSE SHE WAS- Azula, yep still: She was a lesbian, right? I mean I don’t want to put labels but- Kyoshi: Yes, she is. Go on. Azula, still going on: Good, me too. Please tell me stories about her.  Kyoshi: When Aang wanted to change places to teach you a lesson I never would have imagined ending up giving a speech about my wife. Azula, starting to die of happiness : WIFE. … Aang: I have never seen her happier. She made a great achievement for herself so I guess it counts as a victory. Katara: Only Azula can transform an attempt to threaten her from the most feared Avatar into a speech of that Avatar about her wife so they could simp together. Aang: Kyoshi has started to ask a lot about her. Katara:  Aang: She says she remembers more stories about Rangi. Katara: Before that happens, first find me. I want to blackmail her. Aang: Katara:  Aang: Sometimes you scare me.

*SPOILERS FOR DAWN OF YANGCHEN*
Tumblr media
I actually finished the book a while ago, about two days after I bought it when it came out, it just took me a while to get my thoughts on paper as it were.
I'd like to preface this by saying I did enjoy the book and I am looking forward to the sequel. That said, there a few things I didn't much care for.
My biggest gripe was probably the fact that the majority of the book was from Kavik's pov. It's the Dawn of Yangchen, not the dawn of some random guy she picked up.
Another thing is that the story is a political drama. This is more a personal thing than any failing on the books part but I can't stand political dramas. Part of the reason for that is that I like to imagine myself in the position of the characters and think about what I would do in their place. That's not as fun with political stories as it's usually just me strong arming everyone until I get my way. It's the same problem I had with Shadow of Kyoshi and while she was smart enough to realize she was wrong, I probably would have ended up killing someone who turned out to be innocent. Like I said, not as fun.
All that said, I did like the book. Yangchen is exactly my kind of character. The same sense of justice and fairness for all that I believe in while still not being completely naive. And the ending of the book was so nerve racking and exciting I forgot all about my gripes with the politics.
I especially love the situation Yangchen put herself in by imprisoning the combustion benders. They all know they can't hold them there forever and they're far too dangerous to go free. The readers, and possibly the characters as well, know the only practical solution is to kill them (as spirit bending isn't a thing yet) but Yangchen doesn't even let herself think of that option. It leads so perfectly to what she said to Aang about how their duty to the world goes beyond any personal beliefs. It's so perfect in fact that I can't help but hope the consequences of her choice here come back to bite her in the sequel.
Overall, while I still think Rise of Kyoshi is the best book in the series; the Dawn of Yangchen is a solid read, at least as good as Shadow of Kyoshi. If you haven't read it already, I highly recommend you doing so.

Gen and Sapphic ATLA Fic Recs
I’ve been meaning for some time to put together a list of fics focused on under-appreciated characters, relationships, and pairings, and here it finally is! Split into gen and sapphic pairs, including some rarepairs, rangshi, mailee, yueki. I’ve mentioned just one story from each author for brevity's sake, but plenty of these writers have many awesome atla fics to check out
general, character studies, and worldbuilding
The Hand of Kyoshi by TehRaincoat, 23,000+ words
MY FAVORITE SUKI FIC. You want in-depth, culturally appropriate worldbuilding of Kyoshi Island? Suki’s fleshed out backstory? Maybe a look into her relationship with her mother and how she became the leader of the Kyoshi warriors at such a young age? This is it. This is IT.
you were never supposed to leave by windupclock, 2500+ words
Exploration of Sokka and Kya’s relationship and Sokka’s grief. This fic makes me want to punch a wall. I love it. I hate it. It’s incredible and you should read it.
you are any way the wind blows by suzukiblu, 1000+ words
Beautifully written fic about secret airbender ty lee. I think about this story all the time.
to hold the breeze by purplecresent, 4000+ words
“tiny vignettes about aang's tattoos, his culture, and those who love him”. This story is beautiful, and heartbreaking, and so loving. My favorite Aang fic.
(many more below the cut)
Encounters of a Swampy Kind by meetmeatthecottage, 1000+
Aang meets Ikki in the Swamp. Pretty sure I cried reading this. As ya do :’)
Long Long Time Ago by Lisse,  2000+ words
One of my absolute fave fics. The story features great OCs, worldbuilding, and Haru. It is part of a series called “Swampverse” that features an alt-universe where the war went differently (badly). Short series, worth reading all of it. I’m always in awe that this was published waaaay back in 2006. Cw for heavy subject matter, including some mentions of violence.
Sands of Time by starsofgems, 64,000+ words
OH MAN. THIS STORY. IS. INCREDIBLE. Features amazing worldbuilding focused on the sandbenders, Toph and Zuko friendship, and the story of Avatar Yangchen and her girlfriend! Many moving parts, yet it all works together perfectly. Part of a larger series but I did jump into this without reading the previous parts and could follow the plot without trouble.
a tale I know well by undergrounddash, 6500+ words
My favorite ‘Zuko making amends and getting to know the gaang’ fic! Set at the Western Air Temple, Zuko reads a story to Toph, which becomes Zuko reading a story to everyone.
rarepairs
Tide Locked by ambyr, 9000+ words
One of my all time favorites. A beautifully written story about Kanna and Hama, and how war changes people.  If you’re at all interested in either of their characters, it is a must read.
The Eyeliner Incident by spacemagic, 14,000+ words
I can’t say I’m a Katazula fan, but this breaks the mold for me! Canon-divergent modern AU set in Ba Sing Se, wonderfully written, delves into serious themes, and all the characters are wonderfully written!
Rangshi!!!
all i ever wanted was a life in your shape by axsun, +3000 words
It’s sweet but not just sweet, ya know? Kyoshi and Rangi are so true to character. Somehow the author manages to pack in excellent modern worldbuilding in a little over 3000 words. Incredible, must read. (It is part 2 of a previous story which is also wonderful.)
come back with gravity by frutescence, 7500+ words
THEE Rangi fic of all time. Her relationship with her father is fleshed out beautifully and heartbreakingly −  all Rangi’s relationships are explored so well. So so good!!!!!
Steel, Moon, and Fire by rivensilk, 3000+ words
A tag for this fic is “rangi is an assassin but still harps on about her honor”, what more can i say? What’s not to love???
where we go for each other, we go together by city_of_suns, 2000+ words
GOD. I think it was one of the first rangshi fics i ever read and it cuts me deep every time. Fic summary is “In which Koko grows up idealizing one mother and being raised by the other”. Yeah. YEAH.
Mailee time!
to the moon and to saturn by wearealltalesintheend, 10,000+ words
Mai centric mailee story!! Love love love the exploration of Mai, it has a cool plot, great structuring, and JUNE makes an appearance <3
bad girls by airnomadenthusiast, 11,500+ words
So this is mailee but it’s also just the atla girls all together having a good time! They start a band! It’s hilarious and heartwarming, a great feel good story along with the cute mailee.
the language of flowers (aka- how you get the girl) by i_love_your_light, 3000+ words
I am not immune to flowershop fics and if you aren’t either, this is for you! It’s inspired by the tumblr post about saying 'fuck you' in flower, and if that doesn’t scream mailee idk what does
second star to the right and straight on 'til morning by whattheelizabeth, 11,500+ words
MAILEE ROAD TRIP FIC. It’s cute, it’s fun, it’s sweet, and at times it’s hilarious. LOTS of pinning but they figure themselves out eventually :)
hello yueki nation
A Tale of Love Letters and International Incidents by theknightlybisexual, 4000+ words
Another favorite! Chief Yue and Captain of the Kyoshi Warriors Suki become friends while exchanging letters. It's a great take on their leadership roles post-canon, and its SUCH a fun read; I laughed out loud so many times.
moonstruck by zeitgeistofnow, 1000+
Also explores Yue and Suki's leadership roles post-canon. It's beautiful! And it kinda hurts! And I love it!

Hello, familiar anon here, I didn't ask the question about an SOK ending where Yun lives and gains redemption. I also wouldn't mind having my own tag. I haven't found any other evidence of Yun shipping Kyoshi and Rangi outside of "The Boy From Makapu". How does Kyoshi view Yun later in her life( up to the first year after "The Meeting", creating Kyoshi Island nearly 25 years later, the last years of her life)? Would Kyoshi ever mention or talk about Yun after the events of The Shadow of Kyoshi?
hello! and yes I have some thoughts on this and how it would impact the advice Kyoshi gave to Roku and Aang. this got long but I’d love to break down parts of it to write fic, which I think I will do and perhaps post before Kyoshi Fortnight. But I digress, it’s long enough that I have decided to use subtitles. If anything skip to the end about the advice she gave Roku and Aang I think it’s most relevant to what I want to say and also my favorite part.
what I talk about under the cut: the ways I believe yun’s death would impact kyoshi’s actions after tsok and what the advice she gave aang and roku actually means (my thoughts on “only justice will bring peace” means)
would kyoshi talk about yun during her lifetime?
Yes. First off, it would be impossible to avoid him in the political landscape, because it is mentioned that he passed lots of judgements and signed treaties, ect. Although Kyoshi has grown in her leadership style and it’s turned a little (a lot) anti-establishment, she would still need to deal with the fallout of Yun not being the Avatar, because there would be a need to re-sign treaties and settle disputes with people seeking to take advantage of others now that the Avatar has “changed” would have to be dealt with and in tandem, Yun’s legacy.
But also, in a duology that features grief, I find it a natural continuation of the narrative that Yun would be mourned. You don’t stop knowing or loving someone after they pass, and I feel like mourning all of Yun—the boy he was, where he came from, his legacy, the decisions he made, the impact he had on the people around him, even how he hurt people—is only natural and is slightly unavoidable. I think Kyoshi mourns all of her deceased loved ones.
Just, like the concept of this: she’s always hated pai sho but now when she faces a board in her gut and in her throat things feel wrong because it reminds her of what Yun had to do to survive. A breeze smells like the flour and air Kelsang sent into her face the moments before everything changed. She collects pebbles that Lek would’ve liked. Rangi brings her fire lilies for an anniversary and she starts crying. She sings songs with Wong that were her parent’s favorites that coincidentally, Kelsang knew too.
community in grief and kyoshi’s relationships
He was Rangi’s friend, too. Auntie Mui and Hei-Ran are sure to mourn him in their own ways. In tSoK Kyoshi calls her team Avatar a group of contradictions and misfits and in his way, Yun was too. The false Avatar. What a title!
A continuation of the concept: Rangi and Kyoshi remind each other of him every day for a while, swapping stories about him when it gets to be too much, making eye contact when they can hear his voice making light of something stupid an official has said. Hei-Ran makes her do drills she made Yun do. Auntie Mui makes his favorite dish on his birthday that they do not pass in silence, because then what would they be, that group of misfits, to forget another outcast? If they don’t mourn the boy from Yokoya who will mourn them, or who would’ve mourned them if they hadn’t been so lucky? Who will care for the beggars and orphans of the world if not the Avatar who was once one of them and her companions? In a way, the retribution and pain of it all is justice for the life that Kyoshi took. Like, there’s just so much to unpack in the way she says “Was I right about anything at all? What will they say about me? Avatar Kyoshi, who killed her friend because she couldn’t save him?” But I don’t think her guilt would silence her.
That being said, Yun was fundamentally a victim of a system that failed him. The same one that failed Kyoshi. In another way, her actions are justice on a world that failed her and her best friend and the similarities they shared, and she’s able to take those actions because of the way that Yun impacted her, for better or for worse. So yes, I think during her lifetime, she would speak of Yun and who he was, not letting people forget the ways they (and she) failed him and how easily everyone wants to forget their failure. It brings me to the way she was so angry with the Earth Kingdom establishment for discarding him and trying to hide history away. I don’t think she’d ever do that, even if she did...uh, dispatch him.
kyoshi, immortality, and her role as an avatar
I’d like to turn to two passages:
Kyoshi: “The way you describe it, you’d have to decide what version of yourself you’d be stuck as, forever.”
Lao Ge: “Exactly! Those who grow, live and die. The stagnant pool is immortal, while the clear flowing river dies an uncountable number of deaths.”
and
In the future, perhaps, she’d become finalized like carved stone. It would be easier to deal with the world then. She could only hope.
[...]
She still had to be careful not to lose her balance and fall. Kyoshi kept her eyes focused on her difficult path, sometimes stumbling but making sure to catch herself, taking one step at a time.
This isn’t directly related to what I think she would say, but more about how she lets her experiences, and therefore, her experiences and relationship with Yun, affect who she is. Here, F.C. Yee is detailing the person we see in her cameo in A:tLA. It’s a testament to her growth, yes, but also to how she lived so long. She’s allowed to grow now, while she’s young and still learning. But eventually Kyoshi’s growth will wane, leaving us with the iron woman we saw in A:tLA.
Remember when I said I would call F.C. Yee a sap for the very last Kyoshi POV line? It’s the last sentence in my second excerpt, is that Kyoshi is allowing herself make mistakes. It’s pretty obviously a little deeper than the concept of walking down a slope: She became one of the most revered Avatars, we know how her story ends, if not lots of the in-betweens, but F.C. Yee tells us right here in that sentence. She changed and she learned.
I think, however, that eventually she had to pick a place to stop in order to stop aging. If I had to pick a point where she became “immortal” I’d pick Rangi’s peaceful and timely death surrounded by her loved ones on Yokoya (not Kyoshi Island since I’m going to maintain that her A;tLA cameo was “immortal” Kyoshi) and I think Lao Ge killed her—or at least convinced her to let go.
further thoughts on her longevity: rangi’s role and future
Ok before anybody comes into my inbox like “um zey herglowinggirl I need you to know that actually Rangi also lived to 230 😌″ because I understand the sentiment it’s more like here’s what I’d like to discuss: Kyoshi can’t be immortal around Rangi because Rangi is in so many ways her catalyst for growth. First off, it would be completely out of character for Rangi to be immortal, because she’s constantly moving and being and feeling and judging and that changes her. Positive jing. And Lao Ge says it: “those who grow, live and die.” Rangi believes in the best and strives for the best, for perfection. For Kyoshi to freeze herself and become immortal, that would require picking an imperfect state. And as we know, Sei’naka women do not accept imperfection 😤.
Although Rangi promises to always be by Kyoshi’s side, I think in the latter years of Kyoshi’s live it’s more like the impact that Rangi has had on her in that frozen state. That voice of Rangi’s is part of Kyoshi in those years. However, without Rangi, it is unlikely that Kyoshi will always or commonly choose to act on it. It’s stated multiple times throughout the novels that Rangi is Kyoshi’s center and that she doesn’t know who she’d be without Rangi, but I think the logical conclusion is immortal. With Rangi’s death she becomes her own center by stopping her growth; with Rangi’s death she just becomes...that stone she was talking about, where it does get easier to make decisions because you’re not striving to constantly change and grow. It’s almost a coping mechanism, if you will. Because Kyoshi is more than Rangi, can function without Rangi, it’s just not necessarily pretty.
lao ge’s role and future
Which brings me to my “in my personal version of canon Lao Ge kinda maybe killed Kyoshi” point. Rangi is in no way Kyoshi’s morality, but she is very much the idealistic ‘better’ half. With this catalyst of hope and change gone, I think back to the creation of the Dai Li—it very much sounds to me like something Jianzhu would do. Kyoshi, who had previously been the breakdown of negotiations, created a secret op police force?
I think the moment Kyoshi started being the establishment, the moment she was the band-aid instead of the solution (much like Yun was, hint hint) Lao Ge would’ve paid her a visit. Either this or the creation of the Dai Li created a catalyst for perhaps an existential crisis, perhaps just being tired, perhaps simply knowing what is best...Kyoshi is, and always will be, a sworn criminal who cannot uphold the law, only her own judgements. She is both the law and the breaking and bending of it, and when she loses this balance when Rangi falls from her side and she becomes her own rock I think it would swing her away from her center, and this is where she becomes immortal. Eventually, it would become enough of an issue for people to intervene and tell her that her time as an Avatar is coming to an end.
advice to future avatars
This is my favorite point and I’ll tie it back to Yun in just a second. I have posted about thinking about the impact of Yun’s death on Kyoshi and how that would’ve impacted her legacy and the advice she gave Roku and Aang before. Honestly what strikes me is how proud Kyoshi would be of Aang. The way that each Avatar must learn to forge their own way and become their own person and what their era needs, balancing themselves, is something so lovely. I think Kyoshi would’ve absolutely loved how Aang took the advice of his predecessors and said “no, I know what would be better for me,” and I think post-tSoK Kyoshi, who has learned she has to forge her own way and style as a leader, would love and be so proud of him for that.
However, that doesn’t mean that her advice doesn’t have weight. I think mainly her “immortal” phase would perhaps have an impact on the way Yun impacts her advice. I think “only justice will bring peace” also speaks to the finality of death. Just like immortality, death keeps growth from happening. “only justice will bring peace” is also a nod to the way you must learn to cope with your actions and the way you feel about them. It’s also about Aang’s inner peace, which is something I don’t think I’ve ever seen mentioned. Everyone always wants to talk about what he should’ve done and how Kyoshi was right because she told Aang about her choice to let Chin die, but I think she actually guided him to the idea that you should be ok with yourself. To be confident in what you do and take up responsibility for your actions. Kyoshi wasn’t telling him murder was good. She was telling him she owned up to her actions and chose to make those decisions as an Avatar. To me, this finality speaks of growth after Yun’s death and the end of tSoK. She has grown and then frozen, but that means she has changed.
And although I don’t have an answer for what advice she might’ve given Roku, I think it’s a good way to interpret this. The only thing keeping Kyoshi from being honest about Yun’s death is the fact that Zoryu has “Yun” locked up. I think this is likely one of her biggest regrets, that she cannot be honest and responsible for something that weighs so heavily on her soul. This, I think, guides her advice. Only justice will bring peace. Now that I’ve thought it out, perhaps it wasn’t Lao Ge, and perhaps it was the idea that Yun had never been done justice and perhaps that turmoil never changed, which made her long-lived but not quite immortal. She cannot quite know the peace of death nor of life.
I think she must’ve told Roku that no matter what, he must accept the consequences of what he does. He’s not willing to loose that friendship and I think Kyoshi would’ve understood that, and the questions Roku would’ve had to pose himself as an Avatar. That is Kyoshi’s advice. Only justice, true justice in the form of accountability and self-actualization as a leader, will allow you to make good decisions. The acceptance of this: that whatever he does, he must be willing to accept it’s legacy, learn from it, and teach the next Avatar just as she let Yun’s death affect her leadership and what she taught. And I think that’s probably incredibly poetic, even if I’m getting a bit ahead of myself.

the sexualities of every named avatar we know of
wan: my brain might be failing me but i don’t remember him ever even interacting with a woman during his story episodes. may have possibly had a thing with his friend from the streets before meeting the spirits? v ambiguous, but i’ll settle on pan.
szeto: was married either to his work or to an absolute beefcake of a general of the royal fire nation army. the most functional of everyone in this list.
yangchen: i get aroace vibes from her? like maybe she wasn’t a nun but she was pretty busy with all the peace accords and fucking up the spirit world so probably never gave it a thought.
kuruk: definitely into women but i feel like he experimented either with nyahitha (the fire sage from sok) or an airbender friend of kelsang’s. by the time he met ummi he knew he loved women but still thought guys were hot. ended up dying without completely figuring it out.
kyoshi: gorgeous bi queen!!! we been KNEW she was into rangi but canonically used to have a thing for yun first. fire nation ladies stay winning!
roku: reverse kuruk. was sozin’s high school sweetheart until raava’s sapphic ass saw that hot af palace girl who wasn’t okay with colonization and said “i want that one actually.” you dodged a bullet there, buddy.
aang: probably bicurious due to the upbringing of the monks, but probably also demi since he’s crushed on katara since the iceberg.
korra: very bi with a specific type (the black and red aesthetic). who can blame her tho

spoilers for Rise of Kyoshi in this chapter
“When I was a young girl, I worked as a servant for an estate up in what used to be Yokoya Port. Before then, I was just an orphan living on the streets. I had crossed paths with a bender who taught the Avatar before me, an Air Nomad named Kelsang. He took me in and cared for me while I was growing up. He didn’t know I was the Avatar then, but he still looked after me and I grew to see him as my father. When I was old enough, he helped me to find work and a place to stay. That place was the Avatar mansion.
“At the time, many thought that a boy named Yun was the Earth Avatar. Most of this was due to the Earth Kingdom’s somewhat archaic system for finding the Avatar, which led to desperate decision making. After I showed dedication in my work, I became a personal servant of Yun. I got to know him well and we became good friends. There were even times where I thought we would be more than that.
“I also met someone else. Someone who would be incredibly important in my life. A girl named Rangi. She came from the Fire Nation and was the Avatar’s bodyguard. She always said that she was ‘honor-bound to follow and protect the Avatar.’”
It was a brand new sight to see Kyoshi chuckle, Korra couldn’t believe it but she didn’t let it distract her.
“She was great at barking out orders, always bossing me around the mansion. But I could always sense a facade behind it all. Like the cold shoulder, she would give me now and then meant something else. But I grew to be close with the two. It seemed odd, being a mostly novice bender and having two friends who were masters of their craft. Sometimes it felt alienating. More than that, it was hard to come to terms with the fact that I had feelings for both of them. Being at a young age my mind was going in a million different directions.”
This reminded Korra of her own relationships, and the million different directions her mind went back when she was younger, going from Mako to Asami. “I definitely know what that feels like.”
“But, things started to change. The position of Avatar was being put into question as people began to slowly realize that Yun wasn’t the Avatar. Some thought I knew... that I was hiding this secret away. Rangi resented me at first, she thought it was some kind of sick joke. But it wasn’t, I’d never try to hurt her or Yun like that.”
There was a long pause after that last sentence, a long painful pause. There was a great deal of regret hanging on to those final words.
“That wasn’t the end. Someone I thought I could trust betrayed me, killed not just the only person I saw as a father but Yun as well. Or so I thought. But at that point, I felt alone. I was being hunted by one of the most powerful people in the Earth Kingdom. It felt like going back to the streets, I felt truly alone. But it didn’t last long. Rangi was there to help get out of Yokoya Port and find safety. She was by my side all the way through. At first, I just thought she was doing this because she knew I was the Avatar.
“Back when I was still a maid, there was a group of kids who would always try to pick on me. Some of them said that I was still just a poor girl just like them, which to an extent was true. But there were other things that they said about me, much more hurtful things. I’m not sure how they knew what those words meant, or if their parents told them, but every once in a while I would catch an insult from them. And Rangi, she would always scare them away. They knew they could pick on me, but they didn’t dare pick on Rangi. But she tried convincing me to stand up for myself, she was so adamant about it. It was hard for me to understand, mostly because it felt like she was mocking me. But later, I figured it out.
“While we were staying in a new city to get away from trouble, Rangi got into a fight that almost ended in her death. I felt completely helpless to stop it but she made it out before any permanent damage was done. I confronted her about the fight, I was so confused why someone would put themselves through all that suffering so recklessly. And that's when it hit me. She wanted me to know what it felt like, to see someone you love take a hit and not stand up for themselves. To just accept that suffering. She said that pained her to watch, to see me put myself through that suffering. Whether it was being picked on by some local kids or letting personal vendettas eat away at my humanity, she had enough of it. She told me that she cared about me, not as the Avatar but who I really was. She said that I deserved happiness.”
The grin on Kyoshi’s face from before returned, but it morphed into a truly affectionate smile.
“She said that she wanted to make me feel loved.
“I knew what I had to do after that. I opened myself up to her, let her know I truly felt. Ever since then, I knew that she truly meant what she said. Later on, she would become my firebending teacher. She was tough as nails but she always knew how to keep me motivated. Though I wasn’t a fan of all the horse stance practice.
“But something happened, a kidnapping took place. She was taken and a good friend was killed. I felt like I was back right where I started. But with some help, she returned and the man who killed Kelsang and Yun was gone for good. But something happened to Rangi, something that.... damaged her honor.”
Korra could tell the severity behind that statement. She wasn’t completely knowledgeable about Fire Nation culture but she knew that an attack on someone’s honor was a bigger deal than it sounded.
“Not only that, but her mother had gone fatally ill and she needed to take her to the Northern Water Tribe for proper healing. So at that point, we both had to go our separate ways for some time. I spent those days in the Southern Air Temple learning to airbend while I was on the opposite side of the world from where Rangi was. It felt like such a long time, even though it was only a few months.”
Korra recognized something familiar in what she said. She remembered Asami saying that the time she was away healing from the mercury poison felt like the longest two years of her life. She felt a knot in her stomach, realizing that despite their difference of eras that they shared many struggles outside of being the Avatar. There was a feeling of mutual sympathy.
“But eventually we found our way back to each other. From then on, we were practically inseparable. We were always out there for each other, even during the craziest missions. There was always a fear that something would happen, that this might be the last time I would ever see her. I had lost so many friends, so many people I cared about. I couldn’t bear to lose her but I had to grapple with the reality of it. But she always stayed, every step of the way.
“After we brought some semblance of momentary world peace, we decided to celebrate by finally getting married. We both wanted to do it in the Earth Kingdom, we spent so much of our lives there and it meant so much more to us. But because of the prejudice of the time, we did it in secret with only a few friends down in Maizu. Despite the secrecy, it was one of the happiest moments of my life. I still had that creeping suspicion in the back of my mind that this would all fall apart without a moment's warning, but it never did.
“That being said, we did eventually move to the Fire Nation. I didn’t want to keep my love in hiding for the rest of our lives and the Fire Nation was more accepting of us in that regard. We still got funny glances from others, but it wasn’t likely they weren’t going to say anything to the Avatar and her elite firebending bodyguard.
“After settling in the Fire Nation for some time, we both agreed that we wanted a child. We went to a local orphanage, it felt like writing the wrongs of when my parents left me as a kid. It was strangely cathartic, even healing. We found a girl named Koko. It didn’t take long before we knew she was the one. She had a lot of the same intensity that I saw in Rangi, it felt like I was seeing it again for the first time. We had our struggles raising her, as we both had our own responsibilities trying to help the world. But also, I feel we raised a really brilliant woman, and I couldn’t have done it without Rangi’s support, not just for me but for Koko.
Korra seemed fixated on this, she has considered a future with her and Asami but having a kid?! She thought it was out of the question, but this conversation gave her hope for a scenario she only considered just now. If Kyoshi could make it work hundreds of years ago, maybe she can too.
“But time went on. Everyone started getting older. Before I knew it my daughter was grown up and Rangi was reaching her final years. Having to see her go was painful, it really was, but at the same time I was content. For the longest time, we were having to suffer to help each other. Trying to help save the world. Always putting ourselves in constant danger. We went through so much, our only wish was to just grow old together. And we did. I always thought that Rangi would die in battle or be taken from me too soon. It was the greatest relief to know that she lived a good, long life and went peacefully among her friends and family.
“But I still remained.”
The coldness in her voice came back, it was as palpable as ever.
“The world was beginning to shift back into chaos and I still had to do my duty as the Avatar. To me, its what she would have wanted. In that time I took down Chin the Conqueror, created Kyoshi Island with Koko’s help and established peace in the Four Nations, for the time being.”
There was a question that was on Korra’s mind, but she didn’t know if she should touch on the subject. It felt wrong but part of her needed to know. “Did you ever find someone else?”
Kyoshi seemed confused by the vagueness of the question.
“I mean....did you ever remarry?”
Kyoshi slowly shook her head. “I couldn’t. I still felt so loyal to Rangi, even after all those years. But also because I knew that I would see her again.”
Now Korra was the one who was confused, but she continued to listen regardless.
“I kept growing older, seeing all my loved ones come and go with the ages was taxing but I still had that sense of duty that I had to uphold. Then, at the ripe old age of two hundred and thirty, I decided it was time for someone else to take over. Rangi wanted me to be honorable as an Avatar, but more than anything she didn’t want me to give up my own happiness for the sake of being the Avatar. Those last few years I started to remember that. I started hanging on to some of my biggest regrets, knowing it was pointless to do so. That was when I knew it was time for a new Avatar.
“I spent my last few days in Maizu. It felt therapeutic, with all the regret that I was holding onto, to see people that I was able to truly help. I saw how much it's changed since its inception, how happy everyone has been. It felt like a symbol to the spirit of these people, to see the village still standing even after hundreds of years. After a celebration was made by the villagers, I quietly passed on, leading Roku to fill my place as Avatar. And now, many many years later, two Avatars later…..here you are, Avatar Korra.”
It was hard to hide it any longer. Korra was overwhelmed with emotion, tears streaming down her face. She felt great sorrow for Kyoshi, having to live on without the love of her life, but still finding the courage to continue on. It felt unbearable. She also felt something else, a feeling of smallness in the face of the long legacy of the Avatar. Kyoshi’s journey defined a generation while Korra was still trying to make sense of her own. But most of all, she was confused. Confused at why Kyoshi was smiling.
The blue energy acting out the scene slowly faded away into the darkness. Korra had a burning question, a question that felt even more inappropriate than the last. But she needed to ask. “Why,” she spoke softly through sobs. “Why did you hold on to Rangi, even after all those years. Why did you say that you would see her again?! I-It just doesn’t make sense to me.”
Her confusion had given back to her sadness. It was hard for her to comprehend that level of unconditional love, a love that lasted through the eras. It was hard to see through the tears, but Korra could hear Kyoshi chuckling.
“Korra, Avatars aren’t the only ones that reside in the Spirit World.”
Before Korra could comprehend the statement, the blue aura appeared again. Taking shape, it seemed to resemble a person, somewhat shorter than Kyoshi. Then it began to fill in the details, a woman with black hair, probably in her 30s, and Fire Nation armor standing by Kyoshi’s side. It was Rangi. Korra, with watery eyes, stared in absolute amazement, beginning to smile again.
Rangi bowed slightly in her presence. “It's a pleasure to finally meet you Avatar Korra.”
Korra, trying to hold herself together, bowed back. “It's a pleasure to meet you too.”
Korra stayed in that position for longer than she needed. Once she rose back up, she was still overcome with emotion but was still smiling. “Thank you….. for everything.”
“Korra, always remember what I said to you. You're still young but you’ve done so much already.” Kyoshi let her words simmer in the moment. “Already you’ve done a great service to the world, take the time that you have to let yourself be happy. You’ve spent so much of it becoming a good Avatar, now's the time to appreciate those that truly love you.”
Kyoshi gave a cheeky smirk. “But I think you’ve already got part of that taken care of with your girlfriend.” Rangi rolled her eyes at Kyoshi.
Korra blushed profusely. “Wait, how did you know about that?”
Kyoshi stared at Korra ominously. “I see everything.” She paused for dramatic effect before Rangi gave her an elbow to the side. “I’m just kidding, I’m just kidding!”
Seeing these little interactions, the mannerisms between the two were healing to Korra. Knowing that even after years of separation and many more years of being back together, they still had playful banter with one another. It was obvious that they still loved each other. It didn’t help her already tear-filled attempt at staying collected.
“But do take her words seriously,” said Rangi. “You won’t always know when your time with the ones you love might come to an end. Take advantage of the time you have now. I may not know this girl, but I can tell from that look in your eyes that she truly loves you.”
The certainty in her tone was shocking but comforting at the same time.
“That's special, not everyone can find a love that special. Never take it for granted Korra.”
Korra rubbed her eyes, continuing to smile in admiration. She felt relieved, not just about her search coming to end, but for everything. It was starting to dawn on her that maybe she has found happiness, maybe she hasn’t fully accepted it yet. After everything, after the world continuously falling into chaos, after what was her lowest point, she really was finding true happiness. And they could tell, just from a look on her face.
“Thank you both,” Korra said over light sniffles. “I’ll never forget this, I promise.”
“We know,” Kyoshi interjected. She gave Korra one last approving face, a true sign of admiration. “Until we meet again…….”
Both Kyoshi and Rangi bowed before they dissipated into the blue aura, which itself vanished. Korra bowed back to the empty ethereal plains. The white lights around the dark began to burn brighter, becoming an all-consuming pure white. The sound of chimes started to ring in Korra’s ears.
--------------------------------------------
Korra’s eyes sprung open. She was still pouring with tears, but her breathing was slow. She glanced to see Asami and Kya, still by her side. They also opened their eyes when they heard her breathing change. Asami noticed the tears coming down her face, she looked at Korra with concern. She put a hand to her cheek just like she did at the dining hall, with the same amount of tenderness. Korra realized that this might be the first Asami has seen her cry.
“Korra,” Asami spoke softly.
“I did it, I finally did it.” Korra’s smile was massive, an affectionate look back at Asami which she also gave to Kya. She didn’t try to hide the tears, she just let them flow out like a river.
Asami returned the smile and hugged Korra. They both held on tight to one another with Kya joining in. Feeling the love around her at that present moment, it felt good, like a genuine release for what seemed like the first time in a while.
Korra chuckled, “I haven’t cried this much in months.”
They all chuckled with her, as Korra felt the collective warmth of being with those she loved. She didn’t want to ever let go of this feeling. As they all sat there together, Asami leaned into her ear and whispered...
“I knew you could do it. I’m so proud of you.”

New canon information from The Rise of Kyoshi
Alright, so I’m little bit over 42% through The Rise of Kyoshi and I’m HOOKED.
This book does a lot of worldbuilding and the new characters are well-developed.
I’ll be consolidating new information I find from this book on this post. I’ll keep updating the list as I progress through the book!
SPOILERS, obviously
1) KYOSHI
Kyoshi was abandoned as a child by her parents, who were leaders of an underground criminal organization.
Her mother was a rogue airbender hailing from the Eastern Air Temple. Yep, you heard it right, Kyoshi is half air nomad. Her mother apparently became a master at young age and fell in love with Kyoshi’s father, an outlaw, while traveling. Kyoshi’s mother modified her arrow tattoo into a serpent and her airbending ability lost its power due to her attachment to worldly concerns. She compensated with a pair of fans, which Kyoshi inherited.
Kyoshi’s father is from a family lineage that traces back to Royal Theater School in Ba Sing Se. Kyoshi inherited her make up and headdress from him.
Kyoshi was very tall even in her young age. In her teenage years, she is constantly described with terms like “giant,” “massive,” and “towering.” Since she’s taller than most men, I’m going to assume she’s at least 6 ft.
She spent her early childhood as a street urchin in Yokoya and was neglected by the villagers until she was discovered and taken under the care of an air nomad named Kelsang, who was a companion of Avatar Roku. She was, and still is relentlessly bullied by other children in Yokoya.
Kyoshi is initially very shy, non-confrontational, has very low self esteem, and inept at earthbending. Kyoshi is extremely strong for her age as she lifts a man by his neck without any trouble. Also, she has distinct freckles!
She is an extreme clean freak with a constant urge to “maintain order and minimize clutter." She starts out as a serveant assigned to clean up after the (misidentified) Avatar.
I believe Kyoshi is 16+ years old in this story.
Kyoshi’s outfit has chailmain armor underneath it, and she started wearing gloves after suffering major lightning wound on her hands.
2) KYOSHI’S COMPANIONS
As a teenager, Kyoshi has two friends: Yun and Rangi, who are both her age. I won’t go too much into their plot.
Yun is the ‘misidentified’ Earthbending Avatar who is a former street urchin. He is said to be handsome, playful and flirty. He has brown hair and jade green eyes.
He is extremely talented in earthbending and is loved by everyone. He ships Kyoshi and Rangi but also flirts with Kyoshi too (and basically everyone)
He was discovered ‘late’ as the Avatar and genuinely wants to do his best as the new Avatar.
Rangi is a Fire Nation noble girl who is sworn and honor bound to serve as the Avatar’s bodyguard. She is military-trained in the Fire Army Junior Corps. She is intimidating and hot-headed, but also very protective of her friends.
She is said to be beautiful, with delicate skin, porcelain doll face and jet black hair. She has a “charred rasp” voice and “dark bronze” eyes.
She is the "straight man" character of Kyoshi's entourage and takes things very seriously, but she's also the unintentionally funniest character of the group. She eventually becomes Kyoshi's swon bodyguard and depite her best judgement, she's dragged into many questionable situations by Kyoshi. Rangi is definitely my favorite new character. Think of her as a more sane, less murder-y version of Azula.
Her nickname: topknot, hairpins, and hotwoman
Rangi’s mother, Hei-Ran, was a companion of Avatar Kuruk, who gave up her commission in the Fire Nation Army, then later her position as headmistress in the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, to teach the Avatar. Hei-Ran and Rangi are said to be spitting image of each other.
Kyoshi is romantically attraced to both Yun and Rangi.
Kirima is a young female waterbender from the outlaw group Kyoshi’s parents founded.
She has wolf-like features and piercing blue eyes. Kirima is also said to be lithe and light on her feet.
She’s easy-going and likes to tease people, especially Rangi.
Wong is a huge male earthbender in his 30s from the outlaw group Kyoshi’s parents founded.
He is very tall, thick, and has smooth, clean shaven face. He has a very prominent protruding gut and isn’t the most loquacious type.
Lek is the youngest male Earthbender member of the group and is said to be 14-15.
He is from the Si Wong desert and was brought into the group by Kyoshi’s parents, whom he thinks very highly of. This caused Kyoshi to resent him initially.
He values his family and likes to tease other people just like Kirima. Lek has very precise control of small earth projectiles, which he uses as bullets.
Lao Ge is an old, mysterious Earthbending assassin who is said to be hundreds of years old. He pretends to be a drunken fool and only Kyoshi knows of his true identity.
He travels with the group and goes off on his own to kill people he deem unworthy of living. Kyoshi asks him to be her Sifu.
3) THE AVATAR CYCLE
Avatar Kuruk died at the age of 33. He was said to be one of the greatest Pai Sho players in history and a highly-skilled bender, but lacked leadership and diplomatic skills. He spent his time traveling around the four nation seeking pleasure. He was also one of the best hunters to have ever lived.
Two of Avatar Yangchen’s friends and teachers died protecting her from the enemy.
Each nation has its own way of discovering the Avatar and identifying a toddler’s ability to bend
Being the Avatar’s companion was considered to be an honor beyond reckoning that only few got to experience. Those who taught the Avatar held massive influence over the world.
Period between the death of the previous Avatar and discovery of his/her successor is often filled with political turmoil. The Rise of Kyoshi is set in a politically turbulent time as Kuruk died in young age and the new Avatar was discovered much later than usual. This led to the rise of many opportunist criminal factions.
4) BENDING
Unlike the show, bending is openly depicted as being LETHAL in this book. People are impaled, burned, crushed, buried, sliced, and so on.
Seismic sense is a skill shared by all earthbenders, not just Toph. Most people’s skills are extremely rudimentary, though.
‘Dust stepping’ and ‘mist stepping’ are abilities practiced by certain earth and waterbenders to create floating platforms that move with them, which allow them to run through thin air. Rangi mimics this move with firebending after having witnessed it.
Firebenders have naturally warm bodies and they can project heat, which allows them to do things like increasing a room’s temperature by several degrees.
Firebenders' "inner fire" allow them to resist poison.
People in the Fire Nation identify bending ability of their children by placing a bowl full of highly-flammable materials to see if their children can resonate with it. This is done as early as possible to prevent accidental fires as young children don't have good control over their flames.
Lightning bending is a skill so rare that people thought it of it as a folktale or a long lost knowledge. Barely any living witnesses who can confirm its existence exists.
Airbender are seemingly immune to the weather.
5) EARTH KINGDOM
Earth Kingdom is highly fragmented and has multiple kings. This is attributed to Ba Sing Se’s failure or unwillingness to actively assert control over the continent.
Bandits and pirates plague the countryside. Small settlements and towns have to form militias and fend for themselves as the official Earth Kingdom military seems to neglect their plight.
Earth Kingdom’s Northern and Southern dialect are said to be so different that they might as well be different language. People of the Si Wong Desert barely share any culture or custom with rest of the Earth Kingdom.
Beifongs were known for their wealth even in this era.
Kyoshi Island was originally known as Yokoya. Farming yields little and people scrape by to meet end’s meet. People here are said to wear blue clothes despite their earth kingdom heritage. Kyoshi was left here as a child and initially grew up as a street urchin because the villagers neglected her for being an outsider.
6) FIRE NATION
Apparently, firebenders are notorious for always talking about honor.
Fire Nation was involved in a conflict with the Earth Kindom in the distant (?) past.
Fire Navy is the most capable Navy in the world.
Royal Fire Nation Academy for Girl holds Agni Kais and there are many “accidental” kills.
Firebending instructors used to maim their students for insubordination.
Hair is heavily linked with honor. Losers of Agni Kai would shave parts of their head bald as sign of humility but would leave the top knot alone since it’s considered sacred. It was never touched except in circumstances akin to death.
7) WATER TRIBES
The Souther Water tribe is said to be poor, undeveloped, and vulnerable. It’s significantly behind the rest of the world in terms of development. Southern Water Tribe doesn’t have a legitimate Navy because it doesn’t have trees necessary for shipbuilding. It is a peaceful nation, though it is involved in a territorial dispute over an island with the Earth Kingdom. It’s ruled by multiple chieftains.
“Tui’s gills!” - Water Tribe equivalent of ‘Oh my god’
8) AIR NOMADS
Air nomads are regarded with great respect and reverence for their wisdom and spirituality.
Head nomad of an air temple is referred to as an Abbot.
9) DAOFEI (BANDITS)
Daofei plays a huge role in the story. A vast underground criminal scoiety with its own code of honor run deeply throughout the Earth Kingdom, which is "too big to police" for the Earth Kingdom Army.
As mentioned earlier, Kyoshi's parents were leaders of a prominent Daofei group and Kyoshi herself officially swears her Daofei vows to learn bending skills from her parents' old colleagues. Kyoshi absolutely despises Daofei, though.
Several years before the novel’s start, these bandits staged what is known as the Yellow Neck Rebellion, which is an analogue of the Yellow Turban Rebellion (184–205 AD) during Han Dynasty China. In real life, the rebellion led to the tumultuous time period known as the Three Kingdoms Period, where various warlords fought over control of China.

The Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
If you are a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, you couldn’t possibly hate this book.
Prequel to the series, this book gives a view of the Earth kingdom that the series can't give you.
Kyoshi is an orphaned girl who lives in a little coastal town somewhere in the Earth Kingdom. There has been trouble with the search for the newest incarnation of the Avatar cycle but, finally, he has been found. Kyoshi is simply happy to be Avatar Yun's friend and have a roof over her head. However, as the Avatar and his master benders and friends prepare to sign a peace treaty with the Southern Sea pirates, things take a turn for the worst.
The household forced to question if Yun is really the Avatar or whether it might be Kyoshi instead. The masters are in a hurry to find out so that they can retain their power in the world. Besides, no one ever expected Kyoshi really to be the Avatar; she can barely bend her own native element. How could she hope to bend the other three?
Long story short: Kyoshi is the real Avatar (which we as readers already knew) but she found out in the worst possible way. It resulted in the death of her best friend and the man she had always considered her father. Forced to flee with her bodyguard Rangi, Kyoshi sets out to find her parents' old associates. She will need to find master benders who can teach her before she exacts her revenge. What she didn't expect was to fall in with a band of criminals who are indebted to an even worse bunch of criminals.
I am really bad at telling this story so I will stop here. Know that the story is really good. I haven't watched the series in a long time so I don't remember how much was mentioned about Avatar Kyoshi aside from her being the tallest and oldest one ever. This book introduces you to a girl of humble origins who never wanted more than what she had. She was perfectly happy where she was. However, Kyoshi is also a girl who will fight for her friends and avenge them if needed. The idea of vengeance is what drives her, especially at the beginning of her journey.
I missed that there wasn't a map of the Earth Kingdom in my edition because so many places are mentioned and you feel rather directionless - or at least I did. Aside from that, I love all the elements brought in from the series such as the flying bison and the shirshus. I like how this Avatar isn't by definition good and that she struggles with that, without letting it deter her from her quest.
And a little bit of romance to finish it all off. I hope the relationship between Kyoshi and Rangi plays a more prominent role in the second book without taking away from the action. Here's to hoping.

The Rise of Kyoshi
THE RISE OF KYOSHI
By F.C Lee
Tumblr media
Description
Justice begins with one woman
After nine years of desperate searching for the next Avatar, the discovery of young, charming Avatar Yun has brought stability to the four nations- that is until Earth Kingdom-born Kyoshi, Yun’s unassuming friend and servant, demonstrates remarkable bending during a mission to the South Pole. With the identity of the true Avatar at stake and the growing unrest among her allies turning into violence, Kyoshi is forced to flee the Avatar mission with her fiery friend Rangi, taking little more than the metal war fans and headdress her parents left behind.
It isn’t easy finding Avatar training on the run, but Kyoshi and Rangi find unlikely supporters in the daofei: ragtag criminals and outlaws living in the shadows of the Earth Kingdom. Torn between following the traditional path of the Avatar and seeking vengeance for what she has lost, Kyoshi struggles to accept her newfound power as she trains in secret. But while Kyoshi, Rangi, and her daofei friends face off against brutal underworld rivals, those who seek to control the Avatar draw ever closer to her, leaving trails of the dead in their wake.
The story behind the longest-living Avatar in the history of this beloved world, The Rise of Kyoshi maps Kyoshi’s journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice still feared and admired centuries after becoming the Avatar.
Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Review
I absolutely adore the world of Avatar, and with this novel I got to learn so much  new things. I deeply admire Kyoshi’s resilience when she learned that she was the Avatar and I love the world building that Yee created throughout the novel. Yee not only had this great world that he expanded on (with high expectations from those who love the avatar) but he also developed this wonderful, powerful, and amazing woman and gave her so much depth. Since reading this, I have come to appreciate Kyoshi even further than I did before and I am so excited about the upcoming book. Going more in depth, The Rise of Kyoshi was such an enthralling book, that is powerful enough to bring me to tears(SPOILER such as when two of the people that Kyoshi loved the most were ripped from her in a matter of hours, leaving her with a power hungry man who was willing to go to any length to keep the power and reputation that he has), and moments that took my breath away (SPOILER such as when Rangi is kidnapped by Jianzhu and the only thing left at the scene is Rangi’s bun). There is so much more depth added into the Avatar lore because of this novel and I can’t wait to pick up the next one!

Chapter 4: Kya’s Story
Chapter 5: A Tale of Miazu
Chapter 6: The Avatar’s Love
Final Chapter: The Mural
The dining hall was alive with chatter, but this time it wasn’t just the Air Nomads. The room was filled to the brim with familiar faces. Friends, family, teachers, all together. A jovial feeling was permeating from every corner of the room. This was all after a very important day and a very important decision. Tenzin stood up, ready to make a speech like he usually does (though his speeches are usually for the other Air Nomads).
“Before we get the night started, I wanted to give my greatest gratitude to Korra. Because today she has helped shape the Earth Kingdom in a way that will affect its people for generations to come. Not only has she helped bring a proper restoration to decades of Earth Kingdom history, but now the Earth Kingdom has abolished its laws against open sexuality. We still have a long way to go before it's whole again, but these changes are getting them on the right track to a society that cares for its people rather than upholding the status quo. To Avatar Korra…… we are all truly thankful.”
The room roared with applause. Korra saw all the smiling faces turn her way, she even noticed Bolin trying his best not to be a blubbering mess. Mako and Opal were trying their best to keep him together. Korra also saw Kya, who she noticed was tearing up. She knew she was proud of her. It dawned on her that all that work she put into what was, at first, a simple curiosity was going to change things for the better.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The celebration found its way out to the courtyard, it was later in the day and the dusk was coming over the city.
“I can’t believe you were out there changing the world AGAIN and you didn’t bring us along!” Bolin sounded surprised but in reality, he was just disappointed he didn’t get to go on another adventure.
Korra tried to contain her laughter. Asami, right by her side, was trying to do the same. “Believe me, you didn’t miss much,” said Korra through chuckles. “It was just a bunch of meetings and negotiations with Wu.”
“I mean, yeah….but still we could have been there to support you or something!”
“It's ok, I had Asami there with me. Sometimes it feels shes a better diplomat then I am.”
Asami nudged her on the side. “Hey don’t sell yourself short.”
“She's right.” Tenzin brought himself into the group. “After today, I remembered when you first came to Republic City.”
Korra winced at the thought of that first speech she made, it feels like an embarrassing memory from ages ago.
“But now, your helping settle civil issues for an entire nation, that's something worth celebrating.”
“Exactly!” Bolin added.
Korra laughed again, it was hard to comprehend how much she actually has done in such a short amount of time. Even with her three-year absence the reality of her impact on the world was starting to set in.
Kya also joined in on the group conversation. “Yeah, you kids did pretty well out there.”
“Well, I couldn’t have done it without your meditation techniques.”
Kya had a prideful but joking smirk on her face. Tenzin gave Kya a confused look, considering he was the one always trying to get Korra to meditate. He sighed and shrugged his shoulders. She was trying not to giggle at Tenzin’s slow realization.
Korra glanced at Kya, darting her eyes to the side. It felt she was giving her a silent signal. Kya gave her a knowing smile. “By the way Tenzin, I think Varrick got his hands on one of the glider suits. Said something about flying off the tower?”
“Again!?” Tenzin raced off, Bolin went with him just in case he needed help. Kya stayed behind, she looked at Korra and gave her an approving nod. Then she followed Tenzin and the others.
Korra took Asami’s hand as they made their way over to a private spot, the balcony overlooking the spirit portal. There were fond memories associated with this spot, like that day they agreed to take a vacation to the Spirit World. It meant something special to both of them.
“Did you just want to get some alone time?” Asami asked.
“Well, yes but there was something I wanted to tell you.” Korra’s face became serious but still affectionate.
“While I was talking to Kyoshi, I learned a lot more than just Earth Kingdom history. She told me a lot, like how Avatars aren’t the only people in the Spirit World. Apparently, everyone goes there after they die.”
“Everyone?”
Korra nodded. This little bit of information had some massive implications. Then Asami began to realize something.
“So, does that mean my mom and dad are in the Spirit World?”
Korra nodded again, she could sense a feeling of surprise and relief come over Asami.
“But that wasn’t the only thing Kyoshi told me. While I was there, she said that it was important to appreciate the ones I cared for, the ones I loved, while they were still with me. She said that while I have a responsibility as the Avatar, I should take the time to be with others.  And I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately, now that all this Earth Kingdom diplomacy stuff is over.”
“Korra,” Asami said softly. She felt breathless.
Korra looked off to the side. “Gosh, I feel so silly. I haven’t even thought this through. I was only thinking about it this morning….but I know I can’t wait any longer.”
Korra got down on one knee. Asami’s eyes widened. Korra held her hand with a great deal of tenderness.
“I love you Asami, and I want to be a part of your life. I know this is all so sudden but I’ve had this feeling for quite some time now. It's hard to think about what life will be like years from now, but I want to be there with you for every step of the way.”
There was a long pause. Korra began to hear sniffling and laughing.
“Well, I guess it's my turn to cry today.”
Korra slowly got back up, still holding on to Asami’s hand. She waited patiently for a response. “So…...what do you say?”
“Honestly,” Asami reached for something in her left pocket, still trying to wipe away tears. “I was thinking the same thing.”
She pulls out a small black jewelry case. Korra’s eyes widen, it feels like her heart has stopped.
“I’ve had it with me for two weeks now. I just wasn’t sure when the time would be right.”
Korra could feel tears welling up, but they would finally release when she saw what was inside. It wasn’t an ordinary ring. The designs around showed many different Water Tribe symbols, but at the center was a metallic drawing of Naga. It was meticulous, like it was handcrafted. She could feel her tears dripping onto her hands.
“Wow,” Korra was at a loss for words. Korra began to laugh softly, but it was overpowered by her weakening voice. “I guess it's my turn to cry as well.”
They both laughed, trying to keep themselves collected. Korra buried her face in her hands. “Gosh, I feel so stupid. You made me this absolutely beautiful ring and I don’t even have anything to show for-”
Asami moved Korra’s hands away from her face and kissed her deeply. They held onto each other as they simmered in the moment. As their lips parted, they stared into each other's eyes. After a moment, Asami was the first to speak.
“You don’t need to get me anything. Being with you is a great enough gift as it is. Oh, and to answer your question…… my answer is yes. I want to be a part of your life too. And I promise I will always be there for you.”
They held onto each other for a long time, both red in the face and smiling almost non stop. No matter what doubts the future might bring, at that moment it felt like everything was right in the world. The only sounds now were the wind, Korra and Asami’s soft breathing as they embraced, and Bolin weeping tears of joy in the background as he and Tenzin returned in the middle of their proposal.

The Maizu Memorial Site wasn’t on the grounds of the village since it was still converted into a mining town. But there was still a mostly untouched part of the woods in the Earth Kingdom that became the Memorial Site. It showed the history of Maizu while also promoting the traditions and culture of the original villagers. During this time, many who used to live in Maizu were making their way back, not just to see the site but to celebrate the abolishing of the old laws.
Korra and Asami took a vacation to see the site, along with Kya who felt like going down memory lane. It was early in the day, just the time before the crowds would get bigger. Korra and Asami were taking a trail that leads to a part of the Memorial Site that was dedicated to Avatar Kyoshi. Kya decided to stay behind to meet with old friends from her first visit to Maizu.
They held hands while they traveled down the trail, smiling the same way that they did when they first proposed to one another. When they finally arrived, they found a mural painted onto the smoothed side of a mountain. The left side showed Kyoshi in her iconic Avatar appearance, protecting the villagers of Maizu. It was grandiose, evoking the struggle to keep the village alive during its hardest times. And on the right side, it showed Kyoshi as she was. Without the makeup and headpiece, without the stoic appearance. She was accompanied by Rangi and Koko as a young girl.
Asami and Korra looked at the mural fondly, they felt the warmth of each other but also a relieving sense that this history can finally be known to everyone in the Earth Kingdom. They knew it couldn't be erased anymore. In front of the mural was a wooden board, that read:
“This mural is dedicated to Kyoshi, the Earth Avatar, and the Sacred Protector of Maizu. But this mural is also dedicated to the ones she loved. To her daughter Koko, and to Rangi, her bodyguard, teacher, and wife.”
Korra and Asami kept their grip on to one another. Just like Kyoshi and Rangi, they began to realize that they were inseparable. Korra knew that, no matter what happens next, Asami would always be there. And Asami knew that Korra would be there for her.
“I don’t think I want to go back yet,” Asami said playfully. “Let's stay here for a little bit.”
Korra gave her a little nod. They decided to sit down, in the same way that they did when they were meditating with Kya. But there was one difference. They were still holding onto each other.

Final Chapter: The Mural
The next few days were about as strenuous as Korra’s visit to the library. Whenever she wasn’t busy with her diplomatic responsibilities being the Avatar, she was inspecting scroll after scroll. It became somewhat of an obsession. This venture began to take up much of her free time to the point that Asami decided to join in, becoming a study partner.
But there was still little information to be found, not even a governmental policy or an article about same-sex couples. There was also little to be found on the mystery woman who was Kyoshi’s bodyguard. But there were some details. Korra was able to learn that Rangi was the daughter of Hei-Ran, who was supposedly the Avatar’s firebending teacher. It also seems that they knew each other at a young age, since they were both learning under Hei-Ran.
But as the documents went further back, things started to get jumbled. There was an article, announcing that the Avatar had disappeared and that a search was in progress. But it wasn’t talking about Kyoshi. It was talking about a boy, someone named Yun. Going even further back, there wasn’t a single mention of Kyoshi.
Who is this kid? Korra thought to herself. Whoever he was, he obviously wasn’t the Avatar. Having two Earth Kingdom Avatars in a row isn’t even possible. Something wasn’t adding up.
“Um, Korra….” A voice broke her from her intense focus. She snapped straight from her crouched position while she was reading the scroll. Somehow she forgot she was in the middle of having dinner with Tenzin and all the other Air Nomads.
Korra winced in embarrassment, only to hide it with an awkward smile while she slowly put the scroll down under the table. She looked around at the other Nomads, noticing Ikki trying to contain her laughter and Jinora covering her face with an equal amount of second hand embarrassment.
“Sorry. I know, its probably a little rude to read at the dinner table.”
“Thats quite alright,” Tenzin said in an understanding tone. “Honestly its nice to see you get so invested in history. You look like you’ve been putting a great deal of time into this.”
“Oh, you can say that again!” Korra proclaimed. “At this point I know Earth Kingdom history like it was the back of my hand!”
She paused, reflecting back on that statement. She looked off to the side. “But I’m starting to wonder how much of it is true.”
Tenzin nodded slightly. “Yes, Earth Kingdom history can be somewhat of an enigma. Their government has been known to conceal information from their citizens, or erase it all together. But it seems that a lot more has come out ever since the queen was killed….”
He began to stroke his beard with deep contemplation while Meelo, who was sitting right next to him, leaned against the table with enthusiasm in his eyes. “I wanna know about the Earth Kingdom!” he shouted out, breaking the quaint atmosphere of their dinner. “All we get to read about is boring old Nomads like Monk Geeatsu.”
“Gyatso,” Tenzin corrected. Meelo let out a frustrated huff.
Korra filled the room with a hearty chuckle that brought back the homely atmosphere. “I don’t know little buddy, some of this Earth Kingdom stuff is pretty confusing. Even to me.”
Korra decided to push the thought aside for now and enjoy this time with everyone. That feeling, of being lucky, came back to Korra. She felt lucky to have friends and family that don’t keep secrets from her.
They trusted her with the truth.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Korra helped Tenzin with cleaning the dishes. It was a relaxing change of pace for her, something that didn’t require intense focus to get done. But that wasn’t the only reason she was helping out.
Everyone else had left the room and she needed to ask Tenzin whatever he might know about the Earth Kingdom. She dried off one of the ceramic bowls before she stiffly turned towards him.
“Tenzin?”
He shifted his focus and turned towards Korra, still calm and caring in his demeanor. “Yes Korra?”
“I wanted to ask you something….about the Earth Kingdom.”
Tenzin could sense the seriousness in her voice. He put his bowl on a towel to dry. After that, he gave Korra his full attention.
“The main reason I’ve been reading all this Earth Kingdom history is that I’ve been thinking about how it is now. It's not the same as it was when we met Hou-Ting. So much has changed. But I kept thinking about something I heard. I remember hearing that a lot of people weren’t treated equally there. People like…. Well, people like me and Asami.”
It took a minute for Tenzin to realize. Then his face turned sympathetic, but still had an air of contemplation. A wave of relief went over Korra, remembering Tenzin was one her greatest supporters when she first came out. He was willing to listen to her and take her seriously.
“The thing is that I can’t seem to find anything. I even looked Kyoshi up and got nothing. But I know that Aang taught you a lot when you were a kid. I was wondering if maybe he might have told you something about the Earth Kingdom, back when he was a kid, that can help me with this.”
Tenzin squinted, scratching his forehead in even deeper contemplation. After some time he let out a long sigh.
“I’m sorry Korra,” he put his hand on her shoulder. “But most of what Aang taught me was related to Air Nomad culture and history. I learned about the other nation’s history, but most of the specific details aren't as clear to me like they were back then.”
Korra looked down at the floor, it didn’t surprise her but she still felt defeated. Another dead end. Tenzin retracted his hand, he could feel that sense of defeat as well.
“Well it's at least comforting to know I’m not the only one who has a lot to learn.”
Tenzin nodded with a slight smile.
Korra’s eyes strained. “But I just don’t know who else to talk to. I’ve tried so many people,” Korra's face changes from intense to annoyed. “Even Wu.”
Her posture started to parallel Tenzin’s intense contemplating pose. “And none of them had any idea what I was talking about. Not a single person from the Earth Kingdom knows about this. There's gotta be someone!”
Korra took a breather and walked over one of the windows in the dining hall, staring out into the horizon of Yue Bay. “There’s gotta be someone……” She glanced down at the meditation pavilion, noticing a lone figure practicing waterbending.
“Well,” Tenzin raised a finger. “I do know someone who could help.”
