Classic mom and Conrad. It felt like everyone else were having more fun than I did. I thought about what she had said. What did I really want?
I wanted what both of my parents had, separately. But without the absolute dumpster fire of a relationship that resulted in me. Dad and Cecilia seemed blissfully in love, and mom and Conrad could never keep their hands off each other, even in their late fifties.
Tumblr media
Of course I wanted a boyfriend. Rather desperately, if I was being honest. I wanted to experience the same things that everyone else did, the excitement and the kissing and the touching. But I also wanted a family that wasn’t broken.
Ideally, I’d find a really solid husband who never drank alcohol, never talked to other women, loved me, and never left. And then we’d have a couple of perfect, well-behaved kids, I’d be a famous football player and the best mother ever and we’d live happily ever after.
Tumblr media
I rolled over and sighed. It actually sounded a little dull when I spelled it out like that. But I didn’t want the pain and heartbreak that my parents had been suffering through – or causing.
Most of all, I never wanted any of my children to feel like an accident.
Tumblr media
Maybe I was foolish for thinking that I’d get to control everything. I tried to fall asleep, but I couldn’t relax.
Then I heard it.
I could just make out voices, quietly talking and laughing in the hallway outside my door, before moving to the other side of the wall. Samuels’ room. It got very quiet for a while. And then, the faint moans of a girl.
Tumblr media
I sat up. Oh no. Anything but this.
The moans got slightly louder. I wasn’t sure what to do. If I went downstairs, they’d know I could hear them. I felt paralysed by the sheer awkwardness of the situation.
Tumblr media
The moaning was now accompanied by a faint, rhythmic knocking of wooden bed against the wall. Shit. I wondered if I’d be able to get my headphones without making any noise, but for some reason I couldn’t move.
The girl giggled. “Oh, Sammy!“
Tumblr media
I was seething. His name is Samuel. I didn’t have time to seethe for long, however, because a much deeper groan now joined in.
Tumblr media
I had never heard him sound like that. I got chills. I wanted to hear more of that voice, wanted it to be moaning in my ear, whispering my name. I needed to drown myself in that voice.
On the other side of the wall, Samuel groaned again as the girl babbled on inanely.
Tumblr media
I wanted to make it stop, to run in and rip Samuel away from her. I wanted to kill her. I wanted to do unmentionable things to him, to have him do unmentionable things to me.
I had to get away, immediately.
Tumblr media
I leapt out of bed, stomped across my room and loudly slammed my door before stomping into the bathroom, slamming that door as well. As I passed Samuel’s room, it was quiet. Good. Hopefully the mood was spoiled.
Tumblr media
I waited anxiously by the bathroom door, straining to hear what was happening outside. A minute or so later, I heard Samuel’s door open, quiet voices, and someone going down the stairs.
Tumblr media
Yes! She was leaving!
I exited the bathroom, relief washing over me.
Tumblr media
Only to immediately find myself face to face with Samuel, waiting for me outside. He looked about as displeased as could be expected.
“Freya, what the actual fuck was that about?”
Tumblr media
“What, did I ruin something? Maybe if you’d tone it down a bit, I would be sleeping by now!”
Tumblr media
“Well, if you… Never mind.”
Tumblr media
As he turned his back on me, he paused briefly, shaking his head.
“You can be such a piece of work, Freya, did you know that?”
Then he shut the door behind him.
Tumblr media
I sat on my bed, feeling like I’d somehow won a battle but lost the war.
Tumblr media
I hated him. I wanted him. Fuck, when did he get so hot? The sound of his groans still rang in my ears, his naked torso seared into my memory. My entire body felt like it was on fire.
Tumblr media
My hands moved down, almost on their own, and for the first time in my life, I made no efforts to be quiet.
I’d show him exactly how much of a piece of work I could be.

Author POV.
A month.
It has been that long since Y/n started their writing project. In the same corner of a lounge, they would sit there dazed in their world: trying to extract some ideas to put into their work.
However, they have never been alone.
For a month, it seemed like someone also had the same struggle. The opposite table was also a regular guest of this lounge. His visit started around the same time as theirs.
And their sneak peek game began.
Y/n POV.
Crack.
I streched the arms to relieve my muscles. I felt my bones were on the verge to break. My muscles’ pain was at its peak that even a patch did nothing to sooth me.
Huh...
A breathy sigh left my mouth as I stared my screen. Working for five hours straight, I only got on the second page of my writing.
I took my eyes of the tablet. At that moment, I knew I have been staring at the screen too long. Why did I not bring my glasses? Shame on me.
I sweeped my eyes all over the place. Tonight seemed to be special because the lounge looked busier than usual. Then my gaze landed on the table opposite mine.
There he was.
Every time he came, he would come with a pair of MacBooks and a notebook. He always dressed casually; just a T-shirt or hoody, a pair of denim, headphones secured on his neck, and glasses. His hair looked a bit messy. His face was draining its color a little.
Despite all that, he still looked fine. No, he looked gorgeous.
While their usual drink was sangria, his would-be whiskey. The pace was also different. By the time they were at their half glass, his glass had already been empty.
The feeling of warmthness immediately filled my chest. Seeing him deeply focus with his thing was like a spark to me. It lit my passion toward the writing out of nowhere.
Three tables away, that was our distance: the closest I could get near him.
My inspiration.
Tumblr media
Namjoon POV.
‘They are watching me.’
My sense alerted, making me burried my eyes into my laptop. Later on, I glanced at them from time to time, scare to meet their gaze directly.
How will they react?
Will they think I am a creep?
Those thoughts ran inside my head.
Soon they got back onto their tablet. They must be lost in their own mind. My body relaxed automatically. The breath that I have been held on it without knowing finally came out.
I adjusted my posture a little. Taking a final sip of my whisky, I asked for more from a waiter.
As I waited for the drink, I looked at my partner who sat opposite me. Partner, how I wished I has a courage to strike a conversation with them and called them that in reality.
They would be here around 6 pm and left here before midnight. They were a fiction writer, knowing that because of some staff here were their fans. To be honest, I also became their fan recently too.
I have never seen their frineds. They were quite introvert, judging by the table they chose every night. From that, I assumed they had no partner.
Maybe a long distance relationship? It could be the case.
I should probably think that way to prevent myself getting a flase hope.
Their favourite in this house was a sangria, usually ordered three to four glasses for each night.
That was all I know about them.
My lounge partner.
Tumblr media
Author POV.
We were like a parallel line. A little gap in between shouldn’t be the obstacle for us to interact. Yet, none of us dared to cross path...
Y/n narated the last paragraph. Typing each word into the story, they somehow ended up being a chracter of their novel. Y/n didn’t intend to write something as such. However, as the days passed with the stranger, they ended up spilling their feelings into the work.
Just stay where you are
On the other side, Namjoon finished his lyric. He went through them for the last time to grasp any error. To his surprise, there was none. Not like the other songs, this one has little to no scratch. At first, he wasn’t sure of this draft. Now, it was one of the realest representation of his feelings.
As the final page filled with words and inks, they realized the time was up.
3 months later
“...We would like to end today session with Indigo, the chart killer album since the first day it came out. It shouldn’t be a surprise since the work was from one of the talneted lyricists in the industry, RM. Our fans have been sending requests to us nonestop, wanting us to celebrate his first official album. To celebrate all the success, here is our tribute...”
The radio then started playing the tune. Y/n with her earphone listented attentively to the songs. Sipping a cup of hazzlenut latte, they bobbed their head lightly to match the rhythm.
Despite the winter, everything felt warm for them. Not because of the coffee in their hand, or a thick scarf and coat that hugged their figure.
It all thanked to the song that was playing right now.
Right at the moment of them recieving the message from the lyrics while the guy at the opposite bench reading their newest novel to understand their feeling.
As the song came to and ended, so did the novel. Two strangers locked their gaze with one another as their face plastered with a smile.
“Hi.”
Finally, one of them decided to cross their path.

You and your mother are gifted with the creative talent that I always desired but was never given. I couldn’t be more happier that you didn’t get your old man’s hanging curveball although who knows where that nasty throw could have taken you in life if you went on to be professional. But trust me, the art world is where you belong.
The scribbles of green circles and red triangles on a blank sheet of white paper that was made to print invoices always takes my dear breath away. And I mean it when I say that because I know how remarkable your mother is on canvas as she would also rip the paper off the crayons like you do when she was your age.
In the morning, when you were scribbling the life away from those waxed colored tools, I tried to observe what you were drawing without you noticing me. If I were caught with those captivating hazel eyes of yours, I’d take a sip out of my coffee or check my phone right before you get upset at me for staring at you.
However, the last time I asked you if you were drawing a tree, you corrected me and said it was a car. So I was afraid to ask again because I don’t want to embarrass myself or offend you. But mostly so I don’t think about it at work of how stupid I felt for assuming.
I’m afraid that your Jackson Pollock replicas aren’t what I think they are. Perhaps they are buildings you see when you look out the window of the car or maybe it’s Buster, the annoying dog of our neighbor Charles that I fake smile and pretend to like him when Buster constantly jumps on me on our walks to the park.
Whatever it is you are drawing, there’s always a vacancy waiting on the fridge for your next masterpiece. And one day the fridge will turn into a gallery and your drawings will still remain the same. And your mother and I will stop in the middle of the gallery and stare at them like we always do in the kitchen knowing we gave birth to an artist.
At least that is what I’m telling my therapist I’m writing.
I was ready to become a father since the day Maya surprised me at dinner one night at her favorite restaurant. When we sat down at our table, she pulled out a small box, placed it gently on the table, and said, “open it.” The box was bigger than an iPhone but smaller than a MacBook so it definitely had to be the Beats headphones I was begging for. Wrapped in black wrapping paper, I tore the edges off so slowly anticipating what was inside. Once I lifted the lid, I saw a pair of shoes: the left one red and the right one blue. As I stared at the smallest shoes I’ve ever seen for about ten seconds, it finally hit me; my body became paralyzed and the music playing in the back was suddenly silent. The second I looked up to Maya, the stream of tears  from my eyes blurred her face and a stream ran down my cheeks, the same reaction when I found out we lost the baby.
At work I find myself visualing scenarios in my head ever since we found out about the miscarriage. Instead of journaling my feelings, I am writing about a fantasy world where everything is perfect and nothing terrible has happened to me. And there are these voices from other people that keep replaying in my head day in and day out driving me to insanity. I question everything at least every minute trying to come up with some sort of understanding, catching myself juggling different perspectives just to know what peace feels like again.
She was only in her first trimester. It wasn’t an actual baby yet.
I can hear the laughs of the pro-abortionists mocking the brainwashed Christians for thinking abortion is a sin and god considers it to be murder. I know what those laughs sound like because I was one of them. My family tried to raise me as a radical Christian but I didn’t see any benefit to their beliefs so I rebelled. But here I am eating my own words, unintentionally understanding why those Jesus freaks fought so hard against Planned Parenthood. I now struggle to dismiss the early stages of pregnancy despite the doctor telling me the baby would have been about the size of a grain of rice when it passed. That should have been reassuring but a redwood tree began its life as a seed and eventually the grain of rice would have been….nevermind.
We can try again.
When Maya told me this, her voice carried no weight and those words fell directly onto the floor. Her eyes just glanced at me for a second or two as she attempted to give me an effortless smile that her muscles could hardly spread and walked back to our bedroom. I just sat there in the kitchen, the same place where Maya and I made a list together to choose a name for the baby. Each of us had a list that had “boy” on one side and “girl” on the other.  We wrote down names and tried to convince each other that our list was better or agree on at least one of the names together. We debated and laughed the night away until ultimately we gave up and decided to do this again another day with a new list. “We are just too freaking picky, aren’t we?” she said. “Maybe tomorrow we’ll finally settle this once and for all” but tomorrow never came.
You’re falling apart.
Maya was right; I was losing my wife and myself by pretending this misfortune didn’t bother me when in reality it was eating me alive. It was the first week after the loss that changed the whole trajectory of who I have become. When I tried to comfort Maya one day as she sat silently on our sofa staring at the window, she said to me,
“When your body can’t do the one thing that it should, you come to realize if all the other parts of you are just as faulty.”
I disagreed in silence which was the root of my mistake. I should have said something but I said nothing.  She continued getting lost looking outside as if I was never there to begin with and at that moment I felt afraid to say anything else only to think I would have made no impact on this situation, my second mistake.
I couldn’t talk to my friends or my family like Maya did which really helped her during this process and I remained quiet living in my head without telling anyone a single word on how I really felt. My communication between anyone felt so lifeless that things took a bad turn when I lied to Maya about working late but really I was at the driving range hitting golf balls until the staff had to kick me out. One of those nights Maya FaceTimed me in agony thinking that I was having an affair because I was routinely out so late. That’s when I had gone too far and didn’t realize I was jeopardizing my marriage.
“I watched you so closely and began to see things that weren’t there before.” she said. If you’re not going to talk to me, you need to talk to someone. Anyone. We’re falling apart. You’re falling apart.”
My third and final mistake.
I’m sorry for your loss.
A line nobody said to me.
It’s good to see you again. What has changed since we last met?
I felt the same as yesterday, the day before, and last tuesday: “I’m still in a trance of writing fictional episodes of the baby and I,” I say to my therapist. Yesterday I wrote what it would be like to take you to an amusement park and how you would react to the neon lights, inhale the nauseating smell of deep fried Twinkies, staring at the baby blue cotton candy on advertised every corner, and the grinding sound of the roller coaster tracks with its screaming passengers creeping up right behind us. I thought about what would happen if I had lost you and how my heart would drop to the floor and my vision would become blurry trying not to go insane hoping you were just drawn to one of the stuffed animal prizes hanging close by. Sort of like how I’m feeling now.
The day before I wondered what it would feel like if you caught a fever. I might say this would probably freak me out more than losing you at the amusement park. If your temperature reached over a 100 and the distress in your cry overtakes the thoughts in my head, how in the hell would I cope? How do I speak to a small human who can’t speak at all?
“Have these letters you have been writing helped you process the loss?” he asks.
“I think they are the only thing keeping me alive to tell you the truth.” I replied.
“I thought about these letters you write and I want to do an exercise with you if you’re comfortable with it. I think it would help you get familiar with sharing your feelings if you allow yourself to. Let’s pretend your child was sitting right next to me on this chair to my left; what would you tell him or her?”
Instantaneously I began to weep and tremble trying so desperately to hold back any feelings he summoned out of me with that question. But there he was clear as day, appearing next to that empty chair beside the therapist just as I had imagined him. I knew I couldn't hold this weight in me anymore. I had to do this for Maya and ultimately, for myself.
Looking at the empty chair, at the ghostly child, I unloaded everything I had in me. “I just want to tell you how much I love you. You may not exist in the world I live in but deep down in my heart you are very much alive. And I’m sorry that your mother and I couldn’t bring you to this world. It’s not your mother’s fault. These things happen and it sucks it happened to us. Whenever I go places and I see dads holding hands with their kids, I ask myself, ‘Why couldn’t that be me?’ When I go to work, I’m carrying every small piece of my shattered heart knowing you’re not here and pretend everything is fine when it’s not. I envision what the warmth of your tiny hand would feel like placed in the middle of my palm and what kind of reaction I’d get finding one of your teeny socks mixed in with my laundry. I already have sleepless nights that lead to waking up wailing; why couldn’t I do it with you?”
The weight of arms no longer felt heavy, I covered my face with both hands and felt every drip of sob coming out, and I bawled explosively. For the first time in a long time, I said the words I’ve been imagining in my head out loud. My therapist sat there in silence for about two minutes giving me the time to grieve.
“To feel in any form is a gift,” he said. “Just because Maya was carrying the baby doesn’t mean you didn’t feel the same hurt and suffering. This child was yours too.”

I just had the biggest realization while at my retail job that could make for some of the perfect headcanons. (Please note I'm a broke bitch so I've not played the newest version of the demo, just the now-prototype demo.)
So, as far as we (I) know, the main player character (who I shall just shorthand as MC) has known Sunny Day Jack for a month. During this time, MC has not tried to interact with him while other people are around (so mainly while in public) because they don't want to seem like they've lost their mind.
This is something I have noticed is a popular thing to do for most stories involving ghosts in modern times.
One thing all these stories seem to forget, however, IS THAT EARBUDS (both wired and wireless) PLUS CELL PHONES MAKE FOR THE GREAT EXCUSE OF BEING IN A PHONE CALL EVEN IF YOU'RE REALLY NOT!!!
The rest of my headcanon scenario will be under the cut. It got a little away from me in terms of length. ^^;
Maybe one day MC and Jack are at the store. Groceries are a necessity, and they can't lie, having someone around that's capable of helping keep track of the list is quite nice. Up and down the aisles they go, and along the way, they pass someone. A random customer neither of them have any relation to, but Jack finds himself entirely confused by what they're doing.
They seem to be talking to themselves.
There's a phone in their hand, yes, but the screen looks dark. The phone is also being held at about chest height- nowhere near their ear.
He looks around, but there's too many people, so he keeps the question burning in his mind to himself for the time being. He's patient.
Or at least, he's patient for a bit.
After a while he does his best to get their attention, trying to pull them to a quieter part of the store- those seasonal aisles that are hardly touched and homegoods that are hardly ever replaced.
They sigh and go along, because they know if they don't go now, he won't stop pestering them about it. Besides, it's not often he does this, so surely this must be something import he wants to talk about?
How important it is, they won't grasp the gravity of until later.
Jack asks his question, innocent enough as it is.
"What was that person back there doing? Do some people really talk to themselves in public?"
They shake their heads, amused that somehow they missed explaining this bit of modern technology to him (dying in the 80s has left him a bit behind the curve.) They'd caught him up on computers, cell phones, and the internet at large as best they could, but somehow earbuds and headphones had gotten left out.
Probably because they didn't own a pair. They'd lived alone for so long, why would they need to worry about what others could and couldn't hear? Jack never complained about their music choices either, and he was respectful enough to listen in to phone calls- well except that one time their boss called them into work when...
So they explain to Jack- in as simple a way as they can manage- that that person was on the phone. That customer just had a device in their ear that let them hear what was coming through the phone without having to use the phone's built-in speaker.
They then laugh, as a thought comes to them. Later on they realise they should have kept it to themselves, but in the moment it seems fine to share.
"Or maybe they were just talking to themselves and simply faking a phone call!"
Jack seems satisfied with the answer he received. He lets them go back to shopping while he mulls over this new information.
Faking a phone call is something one could do, huh?
Could they maybe, then, fake a phone call to talk to him in public?
Nobody would ever know except the two of them.
Him and his Sunshine, with their own little secret…
Naturally, he proposes the idea to MC a few days later.
"Wouldn't it be nice to be able to talk to each other more? You wouldn't have to pretend I don't exist. Maybe you'd have to pretend I'm somewhere else… But we could talk!"
They think it over. While they're not sure there'd really be that much to talk about, the ability to just ask him a question after a little bit of phone fiddling would make some things a lot easier. Plus it'd be easier to keep track of stuff they forgot to put on their grocery list…
After a few more minutes of consideration, they relent. It'd be just a potential few more minutes of shared words, and it'd make having him around feel a tiny bit more normal in a way.
Surely, it couldn't be all that bad, could it?
At first, it wasn't. Just a few minutes here and there, on the walk to work, at the store, the few times they'd splurge to get their favourite tex-mex burrito bowl…
But then he became insistent on talking more. Talking often. Minutes, turned to half hours, turned to hours. Sometimes the whole day outside of their apartment could be spent "on the phone" with Jack.
They tried to talk him into toning it down a bit. Maybe giving them a trip or two that wasn't filled with chatter?
"Aww, but Sunshine, don't you like talking to me? Don't you want to keep talking to me? I know you *need* someone to talk to… And who better to talk to than me! We're best friends! Best friends talk all the time, don't they?"
His guilt tripping was effective. They couldn't bring themselves to reject him entirely. He was just so sweet and helpful… That's all he was trying to do was help.
Extra shifts at work are good for money and useful for silence.
They couldn't talk on the phone while they were working, after all.
After getting called in on their off day for the third time in a row (and subsequently working a thirteen day work week), Jack hid their cell phone from them so they couldn't answer it.
"You need to stay home and rest, Sunspot. Pushing yourself to work as much as you have been isn't healthy."
Their arguments fall on deaf ears. Jack isn't having any of it today.
"I know why you've been picking up so many shifts, MC. Do you not want me around? Do you really think you don't need me?"
Something about the tone of his voice sent a shiver down their spine.
"I can take care of you. I love you, my Sunshine, and I know that you know you need me to take care of you. How often do you need to be reminded to do so much as eat?"
They had no argument, and sat in silence as he continued.
"I just want to make you happy, MC. Stay home today, and we'll get you back on track starting tomorrow."
As he scooped them up in his arms, they were starting to regret telling him about something as seemingly small and inconsequential as earbuds. They knew they weren't going to be allowed to feel that regret for long, though.

Haikyu characters reacting to their s/o screaming back at them
Nekoma Characters reacting to their s/o Screaming back at them
Read Part One Here
kenma
-it would not take much -_-
- Kenma doesn’t even notice he’s yelling at you or much less using his raised voice when talking to you
-he’s so used to screaming at kuroo through his mic that when he’s finally pissed off and bubbling ; it just happens after you try to ask him what he wants for dinner at the wrong time
-post time skip
“ go left “ The sound of the controller clicking swirled through the room as your boyfriends eyes followed the screen at every turn his character took “ kuroo I said go left “
“ uh which one ? “
kenmas face went into a straight line as kuroos body stiffened knowing he hadn’t been listening in the first place “ no wait which way I meant —which way “
“kuroo I said go left “
“ oh “
“ yeah — go left “ the strain in your boyfriends voice was evident
it showing off the sliver of annoyance he was trying to hold back knowing that you were somewhere in the same house
he hated for you to see him anything other than calm
Anytime he showed any bit of annoyance with you or even showed he was about to give you attitude you quickly shut it down. It was obvious to him who was the dominant one in the relationship and he had no problem with it
Honestly he was scared of what you would think when you finally saw him fly off the handle. Of course you’d seen him have an attitude he was a gamer that was normalized to have one after a lost game but, it wasn’t often he showed you that side because kenma doesn’t do losing
so what would happen if he finally got ticked off so badly due to something that was ‘just a game’ to you would you be scared?
he couldn’t help but think that you would run for the hills and then screw him over in the breakup and tell everyone he still wears tidy whities and forgets to go pee during gameplays unless you remind him by asking had he peed all day
“ hey du— “
“ don’t talk until you kill the leftover guys so we can win“
“ ken you don’t think I can multitask “ kuroos laugh fell into the room over kenmas headphones “ I used to do it everyday i was the captain of the vb team, I keep you in line “
“ sure sure — but are you watching your corners “
“ I keep everyone healthy , and i’m hot , plus I’m about to win this gam— I died “
the silence in the moment spoke volumes before kenma could
his hand grabbing the controller harshly as he refused to blink seeing the word loser flash in bright letters on his screen
Body growing hot and sweaty while he tried to hold in his anger and process what just happened so he could determine the next best course of action
Knowing , He just knew
The amount of trouble he’d get in if you walked in to hear him screaming at kuroo shouting words you hated when he used
He was trying to hold it all in
really he was
he just needed some quiet first just some silence to figure out how to calm himself down his brain going over serveral images of kuroo dead at the bottom of stairs maybe even him getting hit too hard with one of kenmas sets when they played 4 on 4matches
Anger only growing when he heard a voice pour in that he couldn’t figure out who it belonged to much less cared
“ hey ke— “
“ Do you ever fucking listen “ his voice was hard and threatening “ do you ever just shut the fuck up and “
he threw his headphones to his keyboard “ and listen — no you don’t— you go quiet and now here i am upset because you simply don’t listen — answer the questions i’m asking you— you fucking sea creature“
his body only growing hotter as his neck got red eyes darting for a person to scream at and take his anger out on
“ answer me “ he screamed pain eteched in his voice as he finally turned to find you
a look crossing over his face before he blinked looking to the floor then up at you in confusion before turning back to his screen that glowed in the dark room anger hitting him all over again when he saw kuroos wide open mouth and their dead avatars laying on the ground
“ Why the fuck — how the —- I always fucking lose when that asshole —that miscalculated creation— whenever he plays with me it’s so serious to me — i make money off of it i make — i get deals and i — I can’t — can’t lose them they’ll think i’m not good enough— i“
he slammed his fist into the wall speaking low
“ I hate fucking losing “
he turned to you “ it’s not nice y/n — I tried to fucking do your shitty routine of calming myself down first but it just “
he moved closer to you with anger pouring from his body
your eyes wide in a look of fear when he grabbed your face pointing to his screen “ look — “
he screamed in your face when you didn’t tear your eyes away from his “ BABE I SAID LOOK“
your eyes never leaving his as he just grew angrier at your incompetence
“ so your not fucking listening to me either “ his voice grew questioning “ are your ears dirty just like kuroos ? huh ? are y’all apart of some shitty cult for mute wannabes “
his hand gripped tighter on your cheeks “ i’m so stupid your just as fucking dumb as that asshole — fucking — I bet you wanna date him huh — “
his mind ran wild as he thought of the two of you together insecurity blooming
“ you want a loser like him over me right ? you have to like kuroo — look at him you want to date kuroo right “
he laughed “ fucking slu— “
“ finish it and we’ll be playing our own game of kenma getting his ass beat until he finally gives up and cries “
your eyebrows quirked up as you held eye contact with him “ trust me you’ll lose “
you looked at the male in front of you in disgust
“ get your shitty cheeto dusted gamer hands off of me “
his hands loosened their hold on you
“ all the way off you dirty imbecile “
you scoffed as he dropped his hand in a rush of fear
“ I bet your dirty ass didn’t even wash them after I made you pee earlier — yeah made — you wanted to get back to that sweaty chair that badly ? “
his cheeks grew hot as he blinked himself out of his trance only to see what he’d gotten himself into
“ who do you think you are talking to like that “
your stare making him shake even more in fear
You always scared him when you were upset wether you were taller or not your annoyance alone at an action he’d done scared him enough
Your words stood tall and poured in on him making him feel like he was suffocating but, he knew he needed to hear this. You only did this when his anger was out of control like he knew it could be. He stayed on his games all day and all night which was the only way to provide your shared income
at least until he could get his company up and running he had yet to sign contracts because he said he needed to read them first and reading took too much work
this was how he paid your bills. It stressed him out knowing that any day someone on the internet could call him a loser and that same day your steady flow of money may trickle in slower than usual
So when he lost a game any game even something as simple as Mario or even kirby it pissed him off because he couldn’t help but shoulder all the responsibility of taking care of you and himself. He didn’t want to be the reason you lost that stability and all of this catered into his rage. A rage only you could catch and calm down with your sheer words.
“ who do you think you are “ your voice came out low and calm as you spoke down on him “ answer me “
“n-no on — no one babe “
“ don’t babe me “ your hand pressed on his chest “ you don’t deserve that not after you talked to me that way “
“ I -i’m sorry “
“ for what “
“ f-for talking to you like that and “ his voice came out soft as he spoke
“ I cannot hear you “
“ fuck i’m sorry for talking to you that way —and for using force —force and grabbing you like that “
“and i’m just expected to forgive you? you know I hate this — you know this and yet you keep doing it? why ? why do you keep shouldering this and then lashing out “
“ p-please “
“ mm — i’m not seeing it ken— I mean you treat me like one of your other asshole friends and then on top of it you grabbed my face this time— you’ve never gone that far “
“ y-yes I know — I know “
“ so you can see my problem with just accepting your apology right “
“ y-yes ma’am “
“ oh — “ you laughed as you spoke “ now we’re using nice names huh “
“ i—I thought it’d work“ he pouted
“ I wanna forgive you ken “ you looked at him as his head dropped in embarrassment cheeks going red
“ I really do babe but “
“ I swear I won’t do it again y/n “
you thought for a moment staring at the boy in front of you who was pissing his pants in fear
“ y-y/n I swear I didn’t know it was you I was angry and I —I thought kuroo was talkin— “
“ but you realized it was me? “
he paused
“ you even looked from me and back to your screen so you knew correct “
“ yes “
“ and yet you still yelled at me and grabbed my face “
“ really i’m sorry— I wasn’t there all the way “
you took a deep breath before looking to his computer eyes made up in a squint and then trailing back to the boy in front of you
“ ok ken “ his eyes glowed in happiness
“ you— your forgiving me “ he laughed almost mocking you knowing he’d never been let go this quickly you usually took away his gaming system until he’d learned to calm down
he even started ‘doing’ yoga, if you count playing the youtube videos on the tv while he played on his apple watch that you’d forgotten to take, just to fool you into giving his game back “ this easily“
your eyes moved pointedly to his as he fell back into submission
“ i’m sorry I just meant you arent more upset “
“ well i’m deciding that since it was the first time you ever went to that extent of yelling at me I’m gonna let you off the hook “
you smiled “ also I thought you already got enough punishment “
“ h-huh “
you let your head move up to face his computer screen in a slight nod his eyes lighting up before his face fell in sadness
He never meant to fall submissive let alone show who was the dominant one in the relationship to anyone outside of you especially not with kuroo on the other line
“ I don’t think kuroo minds much babe it’s ok “ you said happily changing the whole way you carried yourself earlier and the way you spoke your body easing after beating into kenma
“ no trust me he doe— “
“ goddamn “
your eyes fell onto his friends open mouthed smile
“ and you just let ‘em do you like that “
kenmas eyebrows came together in sadness
“ damn ken —“
your eyes went hard on kuroo
“ and do you think your any better ? because from what i’ve heard churro it seems to me like you couldnt even keep your own team on a leash much less that lev kid so ? “
“ god “ kuroo coughed shifting in his seat whispering softly to himself “ so hot “
he shook his head before speaking again a little bit louder “ uh no— no I completely understand y/n —god i just know your fun “ he laughed
“ kenma keep listening to your s/o don’t mind me “
he moved to log off speaking under his breath “ so fucking scary —swear i’m bringing ‘em in to scare my vb kiddos— shit “
you shook your head in confusion “ uh wha—”
“ he had a — he had a crush on you and yeah I”
“ oh well “ you moved to throw your arms around him in happiness his body stumbling back at the action as he cautiously wrapped his hands around your back
“ n-not in trouble “
“ not in trouble “
“ still love me “
“ still love you “
“ then can I pla- “
“ no “
“ nevermind I didn’t want —want to play anyways “
“ that’s good “
“ yeah “ he drawed out as you grabbed his hand pulling him to the living room “ but babe the monitors still on just one matc— “
your grip tightned on his hand “ movie ken “
“ got it movie — movie “
he spoke low following you wrapping his arms around you as he kissed your cheek “ movie first — game later “
lev
-I don’t think he would ever ever ever scream at you but he would totally say something hurtful and not even realize it because kuroo and kenma said it to him
-so he’s literally just using what he was taught but In the wrong way
- not a time skip
“ lev can you help me “ you shouted to the taller male as you made your way across the court his hands cupping around his mouth as he stared down on you from the other side “ yeah “ he smiled “ totally “
you copied him a smile itching to spread across your face “ just because I yell doesnt mean you yell “
“ well as bossy as you are you should know I’m going to “
your face dropped before it fell back into a happy smile mind racing with thoughts of maybe hes just making a joke he knows you hate when people say that about you
“ hey uh lev ? “
“ yeah babe “ he said running over to you
“ let’s not say that ok cause it kinda — it really hurt my feelings “ his eyebrows furrowed as he looked down on you his voice vibrating along the gym before he smiled again “ babe I like the design you added to your face I didn’t notice but other people said you looked good with it and yeah —honestly they were right “
“ huh — design? “
“ yeah it’s red it’s right by your eyebrow “
your hands moved quickly to cover the pimple from his view eyes darting across the gym hoping no one else heard and was trying to take a look at it
“ it’s fine it’s fine maybe if you put on some makeup you can hide it right ? i mean if you don’t like the design like I do i mean that’s what you usually use it for right ? “
your eyebrows went up face holding nothing but sadness as you spoke “ do you— lev baby do you really think i’m bossy “
he jumped up and down on the balls of his feet in excitement as he kept going “ yeah — I do everything you tell me to and I like it i’m like a puppy and your the master “
you could feel your body heat up at his words his smile spreading wider as he turned to his awestruck teammates
“ babe it’s ok id follow you to the end of the earth because I don’t understand your just stringing me along”
your hands dropped the balls you held onto from picking them up off the floor. head cocking to the side as you studied him trying to see what sparked this new way of thinking
“ oh god “
“ he’s so fucking —so so fucking clueles- “
“ stupid just outright stupid is what he is “ you said as his eyebrows creased face struggling to find the right way to react to the burning hot anger he felt radiating off of you in waves “ lev baby who told you this “
you walked a bit closer to him head leaned back to see him clearly “ who made you think this way “
“ uh what “ he shook his head face coming up in a pout “ babe I — “ he played with his fingers as he looked off to the side hand moving to run across his neck “ for some reason I feel like i’m in trouble —I did—did I do something wrong baby ?“
“ this is not cool lev not helpful, not sweet and nice it’s hurtful “
“ no what ? wait i’m “ he took his hand out to grab your arm his face made up in pure confusion “ no i’m —i’m complimenting you “
“ you— your complimenting me? “
“ yeah “ he smiled struggling to hold it up as his eyes darted across your face
“ lev baby “ you faked a smile as your eyes hardened “ think about your words —what have you just said “
“ well I said that your my master and i’m like a puppy“ he smiled as he thought back “ only because I love you and would do anything you tell me and because i’m hyper and sometimes you have to explain stuff to me in simple form because I can’t pay attention when anyone else talks but you “
he kept going “ then I said that I do anything you tell me to and I would “ he smiled harder voice sure of himself“ because I like following you and making you happy “
he scratched his neck face flashing a deep red “ then — then I said that you cover up your bossine— ok i’m sorry “
his face made up into a pout as he slumped “ really I didn’t know I thought it was nice I heard the team saying it in the back rooms and I though— “
“ FUCKING IDIOT “
“ LEV WHAT THE FUCK “
“ HOLY SHIT LEGS ARE YOU SERIOUS “
levs face dropped as he turned to kenma “ legs seriously ? “
kenma shrugging as he continued to play his hand held game “ eh well everyone else was saying something and you annoy me so — I present legs “
he sighed as he turned back only to see your eyes holding nothing but garbage fires In them as you stared at the group of guys huddled together
“ speak “ everyone whimpered as you stared them down “ explain to me why my boyfriend is telling me I need makeup to cover my pimple ”
kuroos uncomfortable laugh left him quickly as he looked away from the both of you rocking back and forth in his shows “ well um y/n “ he coughed “ you see we were — we’re guys y/n we were making jokes and you see lev doesn’t understand “
“ well I do so explain “
he jumped “ we thought— “
“ not quick enough you sweaty catboy“
“ god ok he came to us wanting to know how to compliment you he said he didn’t want to say anything dumb and —so that made us realize we can really make him do anything cause he’s so clueless—thought if we could get lev to say some dumb shit—trust me we didn’t go that far “ he said pointing to lev who was picking up the balls you’d dropped on the floor chasing after one that rolled away
“ then you’d break up with him and I guess at least one of us would have a chance — well except kenma he says he has princess peach as his wife —wait who the fu—I actually don’t know who that is ken is that an online girlfriend “
he furrowed his brows actually puzzled by his earlier words “ I don’t know why it seemed so normal to me at the time “
he shook his head “ but lev is so fucking stupid that he said everything fucking wrong — we literally just told him what we personally like about you —gave him some corny pickup lines but he said everything wrong like even the phrase about your makeup we were saying how you don’t wear any or when you do it’s not obvious because your natural beauty just radiates through it— then the next thing we talked about is how strong and just how you take directive I guess — and we — we thought it was hot “
“ then where did he get the stuff he said from “ your voice went high now you were confused he couldn’t have made that stuff up
“ y/n he’s just fucking stupid where do you think “ he rolled his eyes “ he made it up because he didn’t understand “
levs eyes widened as he had stopped paying attention to the situation taking place hours ago “ uh I cannot confirm or deny that statement but I will say you are very very beautiful my love “
your heart warmed as the team groaned your body moving into his as you kissed him softly “ did I do something wrong ? “
“ no lev your ok “
“ ok I never want you to feel bad or like y’know how kenma feels I always feel like he’s so angry “ your boyfriend shivered as he locked eyes with kenma who was ready to pounce on him claws showed as he gripped his game harshly “ see —- so angry “
“ not angry lev just “ you looked at him seriously “ babe you have to pay attention to what you say you may say something really really wrong to me one day and then — “
“ and then you’ll tell me what I did wrong while we cuddle and drink hot chocolate“
you smiled squeezing him harder “ no — then i’ll break your kneecaps so you’ll never be able to play volley again and i’ll dye your hair black in your sleep so people will think you look like a tall dirty mop “
he shook before he led you out of the door the team watching as you left leaving all of them to curse silently about their failed plan “ he’s the stupidest guy on the team and he — he got that “
“ bet he doesn’t even know what he’s doing when he’s tapping it “
kuroo laughed “ yeah right like he even gets that far — they probably gotta explain how to continue a kiss without him focusing and staring straight into their eyes — he’s probably learning how to ‘multitask’ right now as we speak—lucky idiot “
the doors to the gym slammed open roughly a few minutes later as you held levs hand tightly behind the door “ HEY ASSHOLES “
everyone tuned to you in fear for themselves and the tall male behind you who you dragged like a mom in a store his eyes stuck on the lollipop that stuck out from his mouth “ guys y/n found me a lollipop—she stuffed it in my mouth when I told her the joke you guys told me to “
“ w-what joke “
“ the one where I called the sex line and said that I requested them because I heard good reviews “
the teams heads all dropped knowing they’d never said anything of the sort or even along the line he’d messed up their original words yet again and put not only himself but them in danger
“ if you guys ever try to taint my boyfriend with your dumb fucking words again I swear I will end you all —kenma i’ll buy every copy of the new game that you want that’s coming out — literally blow all my money so you can’t ever play the stupid game until im ready to allow you to “ his mouth going up in an o as he still had his attention on his game hands only tightening a bit at the threat his body moving behind kuroo for safety
“ kuroos chemistry lab will become a garbage chute for my lunch trays “ kuroos body slumping as he draped himself over kenma only to get pushed off and fall on the floor in pain your mouth moving to tell everyone else on the team what would happen if they didn’t respect your boyfriend and treat him like the nice , caring guy he was
Until finally you flashed a smile and walked off leaving the team in disarray as they couldn’t figure out if you just grew that much hotter or if they were having heat flash from the pissed off emotions they felt when lev turned around and winked at them while he ran his hand down your shoulder to land at your lower back as he followed you out

     Ex-wife.
Bucky’s words echoed in your ears as he didn’t dare to look at you.
    His ex-wife was threatening you.
And he didn’t think to mention her? Ever?
“Can I please explain?” Bucky croaked finally, voice sounding broken as you shrugged your shoulders — in a state of shock.
That was all he needed before he recounted his previous relationship with the woman who was now sending you threatening emails.
Married young, too young and too fast and it ended up blowing up in their faces.
Well, clearly she hadn’t gotten over it.
“I thought I lost her,” he explains. “I thought that moving halfway across the country would be enough.”
You finally looked up to meet his eyes, glossy, sad and terrified as you sniffled.
“There’s a reason only Tasha calls me James.”
It broke your heart hearing that, the way his head hung low and he nearly winced at the sound of his own goddamn name.
But you didn’t know who to trust anymore.
Bucky always glossed over how he, Sam, and Nat knew each other — telling you that they were old friends that go back.
    How far back?
You needed to know, but clearly you weren’t about to get answers from him.
“Buck,” he stopped you, taking a step closer as his eyes begged and pleaded you not to finish your sentence.
“I can’t,” he shook his head, “I need some time.”
You couldn’t bring yourself to say those words that would shatter both of your world’s. But you had no idea what the hell you had gotten yourself into and you needed answers.
And you knew exactly who to go to for them.
“I understand,” Bucky sighed. “I’ll stay at Sam’s for some time, okay?”
You could only nod your head, watching him walk past you and into his door.
Then he shut it, something he never did because his door was always open for you. No matter what you needed and no matter what time of day it was.
    It felt...wrong.
But you couldn’t dwell on it, grabbing your keys, phone, and whatever other important things you could think of being you nearly bolted out of the front     door.
You plugged your headphones into your phone, hitting shuffle and descending down into the subway.
The entire ride made you anxious, slowly approaching your stop and you were way out of place in this crowd.
People rushed by you in expensive suits and what you could only guess were the infamous red-soled shoes that were worth close to your monthly rent, if not more.
You cringed, thinking of the man you were about to see in his stupidly tall office building that you had to crane your neck at an uncomfortable angle just     to get a look at.
The elevator could not have taken longer, tapping your foot impatiently as you rode up to what felt like the heavens before the doors opened to revel smooth wooden doors that reach from the ceiling to the floor.
You were so close, before you were stopped.
“Ma’am, I’m sorry, you can’t be here right now.” A man’s voice stopped you, dressed in a security guard uniform and oh, this was so him.
“I know him,” you said, intent on seeing the man probably sitting behind those large doors.
“I’m sorry, I can’t let you do th—”
“It’s okay, Marv. I know her,” his voice came not from behind the doors, but from the long hallway to your left.
The security guard, Marv, nodded his head as he looked at you once more before retreating back to where he was leaning against one of the walls.
“This is a surprise,” you rolled your eyes, “Tony, please. I don’t wanna hear it.”
He walked over to you, embracing you in a hug, “oh c’mon, I’ve missed you, Kid.”
You shook your head, “I haven’t been a kid in years,” you tried to remind him, but it was Tony, he wasn’t going to listen as he just laughed it off and welcomed you into his office.
It was much different from last time, all new furniture and appliances, but nothing lasted more than a year with Tony.
Tony was an old friend, sort of.
He was an old friend of your father’s, something like an uncle, but also like your older brother.
So just one giant pain in your ass.
“So,” Tony sighed. “What trouble did you get into this time, Kid?”
    You told Tony everything.
From being roommates with Bucky to the way he asked you to be his fake girlfriend to Sam’s wedding and all the way to the situation you were in now. Confronted by his ex-wife without any idea of what she was going to do.
Tony had that look on his face. The one where he was going to tell you that you were crazy.
“I don’t know how you manage to get yourself into these situations,” he chuckled, hand clamping over your shoulder as he walked around his desk and typed something into his computer.
“Last name is,” he looked at you. “Barnes.”
He nodded his head, typing away at his computer again before he stopped.
There was a brief moment of silence, Tony hiding behind the computer screen before he stood up and walked back around the desk, “I’m gonna need some time.”
You understood, shaking your head. You were asking Tony to hack into any known database and collect as much data on Bucky as you could. It was wrong, but you just needed to know who you were dealing with.
“Thank you, Tony. I-I really appreciate it.” You weren’t good when it came to...well, the heartfelt side of things but luckily neither was Tony.
“Don’t get sappy on me now, Kid. You know it makes me sick,” he joked playfully, smile on his lips as you stood up to give him a half hug.
“I’ll call you as soon as I know anything.” He promised before you walked out of the too-tall building with far more questions than you came with.
It was a waiting game that you didn’t want to play, but you didn’t have a choice.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
It seemed like your relationship with Bucky was doomed from the start.
Friends to lovers rarely, if ever, works out in anyone’s favour.
The fake dating trope you could handle, pushing your feelings aside to help Bucky win a bet didn’t seem like the worst thing in the world. You had a great time, great fucking sex, and a trip out of it.
Then Steve wouldn’t leave the picture. Going as far as coming to the wedding as Natasha’s boyfriend to spite you not realizing that you and Bucky had gotten married.
    Married.
You and Bucky were married. Bonded in a whole other way and now, his ex-wife was out for you and him.
Maybe this was a sign from the universe, a big red fucking flag telling you that it wasn’t worth it and yet...you couldn’t let go.
The apartment felt empty without Bucky, his bedroom left the way it was in the morning with your favourite sweater of his laid out on the covers and a little post-it note on top of it.
You never could really decipher Bucky’s handwriting. It was absolute chicken scratch as you picked it up and managed to make out in case you get cold scribbled onto it.
It was an easy decision to pull it over your head and drown yourself in the scent of Bucky’s cologne as you fiddled with the small gold band you now wore around your neck as a necklace.
You didn’t want anyone other than Bucky. There was no in the world who understood you better. Who knew how to make you laugh when you were having a bad day.
Everything led you right back to Bucky.
So when your phone rang from the other side of the couch, you were secretly hoping it was Bucky.
Instead, Tony’s name flashed and your heart sank into your stomach as you quickly hit answer and held the phone up to your ear.
“You’re not gonna like this, Kid.” Tony’s voice flowed through the speakers as you took a shaky breath in and braced yourself for what Tony was about to tell you.
“He did a damn good job at erasing his history, but you can’t erase all of it,” Tony chuckled as you rolled your eyes, “quit stalling.”
He sighed, “the Howling Commandos was an organization tasked with,” he paused, “tasked with collecting intel and making sure that information never got released to the public.”
This time, it was your turn to fall silent.
“Like, spies?” You asked and Tony hummed, “sort of.”
    “They had spies, agents, hit-men.”
No. You shook your head, no.
“James Buchanan Barnes was their highest ranking hit-man. Him, along with Sam Wilson and Natasha Romanova worked as a team. A spy, agent, hit-man trio.”
You had to shake yourself out of spiralling, what you needed was everything Tony could possible tell you.
“Anything on his ex-wife?” You then asked and heard shuffling on the other line, “not much. Mary Barnes, but I doubt that’s her real name, was part of a training initiative the Howling Commandos were testing.”
You bit your lip, at least you had a name, even if it wasn’t her real name.
“By that point it looks like James—”
    “Bucky. His name is Bucky.”
Tony cleared his throat after a moment’s silence, “Bucky looks like he had disappeared. Blipped off of the face of the Earth. There’s nothing in his file after 2014.”
That makes sense. Bucky was perhaps the most old-fashioned man you knew, only upgrading from his flip-phone just a few years ago. He barely knew how to unlock it, though.
“Sam and Natasha went on to live normal lives, Kid. I’m sure that’s all Bucky wants.” Tony tries to assure you and you laugh, “you sound like my dad.”
He laughed on the other line, “oh gross.”
“Thanks for everything, Tony.” You said, “you know what number to call in case you’re in trouble.”
With that, you both hung up, tossing your phone away from you to digest everything you’d just been told. You knew you had to talk to Bucky, but you didn’t know when.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“So you’re tellin’ me,” Sam was confused. “That this is the same Mary that tried to get you killed?”
Bucky rolled his eyes, taking another swing of his beer as he rounded Sam’s kitchen island.
“That’s the one, you know, the undercover agent working for Strucker.” Bucky scowled at the name.
He was angry, beyond angry at the fact that his past was creeping up on him despite how far he had gone to erase it.
“But why now? Why come after you now?” Sam poses the question that even Bucky doesn’t have an answer to. So he just shrugs his shoulders and finishes off his beer.
    “Unfinished business.”
They stand in silence for a little while longer, listening to the old ticking clock hanging on the wall before Sam takes a step towards Bucky.
“Whatever you need, you know that Tasha and I are here for you, right?” He whispers and Bucky feels the warmth blooming in his chest as he gives him a half-smile.
“Yeah,” he nods his head, “thanks, man.”
Sam knows that Bucky was never really good at the sappy shit, so he doesn’t force it. Instead, he offers him another beer, bottle necks clinking as Bucky’s thoughts race.
    He was worried.
Not about himself, but about you.
And you were worried about Bucky, curling up in his bed as you sighed and tossed and turned. There was no way you’d be able to fall asleep alone tonight. And hugging his pillow just wasn’t enough.
So you grabbed your phone, hitting his name and waiting for the ringing to sound before he picked up — tired and groggy.
“We need to talk.” You didn’t give him a chance to greet you. He sighed on the other line, but hummed in agreement, “tomorrow?”
You hummed in response to his question, the sound of his voice soothing as you played with the sheets of his bed.
“I miss you, Sweets.” Bucky whispered, your breathing hitching at how low and raspy his voice really was.
“I miss you too, Bucky.” You admitted, shifting as you got comfortable on the pile of pillows against your head.
There was a moment of silence before Bucky spoke again.
“You know what ‘m really missin’ right now?” His words sent a shiver down your spine as you shakily inhaled, “what?”
Bucky sighed, reminiscent of how he sighs when he runs his hands all over your body.
“I miss that sweet cunt of yours.” Bucky purrs, you know he’s smirking, possibly even dragging his tongue across his bottom lip as he closes his eyes to imagine you under him.
You’re at a loss for words, feeling your panties grow damp, core aching and you’re going to have to touch yourself soon. But that’s all part of Bucky’s plan, you think.
“Here I am, all alone, with my hand wrapped ‘round my cock,” he whispers, but you can hear him stroking himself.
“And all I can think ‘bout is that way your tight little pussy grips me and milks my fuckin’ dick, baby.” Bucky was always so good with his words, knowing exactly what to say to make you melt.
And it was working, because you were a squirming mess in his bed.
“Well,” you could tell he was smirking by his tone, “what’re ya waitin’ for, Sweets. Go on, touch yourself. I wanna hear you work your clit.”
Your hand flew under your panties, being given the permission only made it sweeter as your fingers came in contact with your soaking folds. The sensitive bundle of nerves needed desperate attention as you slowly circled it.
“Good girl, that’s my girl.” Bucky praised, continuing to work himself.
“God,” he hissed, “can’t wait to have you all to myself again. Bury myself deep, maybe even have you sit on my cock as you beg me to do somethin’.”
You worked yourself a little faster, applying some more pressure as you let out a whine at his words.
“Add two fingers, Sweets. I know how much you love bein’ stretched,” Bucky chuckled deeply, “been thinkin’ of gettin’ you a mould of my fuckin’ dick for when ‘m not home.”
Oh my God. Oh my God that shouldn’t be so fucking hot so why does it make your walls flutter and breathing uneven as you have to stop yourself from actually fucking cumming.
He chuckles again, “yeah, you’d like that, wouldn’t you?”
You can’t verbally respond, too focused on the tight coil in your abdomen that’s ready to snap.
“I know you’re close, can hear it in how fuckin’ desperate you sound,” he pants, “so why don’t you make a mess all over my clean sheets.”
You gasp, how did he know, but you don’t get to dwell on it for much longer than a moment because your orgasm rips through you and leaves you panting Bucky’s name.
Both of your breaths are uneven and ragged through the phone’s speakers, bed springs creaking on Bucky’s side as he hums.
“If only you could see the miss I made for you, Sweets,” you shuddered at his words, closing your eyes to relish in the moment.
“Now get some sleep, okay? I’ll see you tomorrow.” His tone has changed, entirely sweet and caring as you grab the phone to bring him closer to you.
“Okay,” you reply, another lick of silence before you hear Bucky going to end the call but you stop him.
“I love you, Bucky.” You quickly blubber out and it feels good to finally say those words because there’s no more denying how you really feel about him.
    “I love you too, Sweets.”
It’s a bittersweet ending to the phone call, thoughts and emotions running wild as you’re forced to remind yourself that Bucky has a lot of explaining to do.

Broken Like Me (2)
Tumblr media
masterlist.
Ironically, this chapter title has existed since the beginning. I’m so good at foreshadowing that I accidentally predicted how updating this fic would go. Anyway I’m sorry.
In my year of thinking-about-writing-but-not-actually-writing, this story and I have come to a much deeper understanding. So while I feel bad for making you all wait so long for this chapter, I don’t regret it, because this story simply wasn’t ready to be written yet. But it’s ready now.
Also, for the sake of everyone’s sanity—but especially mine—chapters are going to be shorter than usual (closer to 2k than my usual 4k).
I promise you won’t have to wait another 11 months for the next update. I’m not that mean.
*****
Whispers trail Riley wherever she goes like they’re stuck to the bottom of her boots. Their father-daughter relationship is common knowledge at the Phoenix, but considering how differently everyone treats her now, Riley wishes it wasn’t. The mourning period for the general population has passed, and even those who knew him well are starting to show acceptance of what happened.
Riley refuses to accept it. Her refusal, coupled with her all-black outfits and withdrawal from any and all social situations, feed the whispers.
That poor girl.
Maybe she’ll go AWOL. It wouldn’t be the first time.
Isn’t it time someone intervenes?
Riley ignores them all, drawing her awareness inward until it’s just her and her computer.
The rhythmic sound of keyboard clicks isn’t soothing anymore. Riley used to find familiarity and comfort in the noise, but now all it represents is the passage of time.
With each click, another second passes. Another second without him. Another second closer to a time when people will expect her to be over it and act normally again. Normal, Riley thinks bitterly. She doesn’t even know what that means anymore. She supposes a new normal was created when he originally left for his doomed mission. Now what? She’s supposed to make another new normal that’s exactly the same as the previous one except without the hope of him eventually coming home?
She casts the thought aside, shoving it into the box where she keeps all the other thoughts she doesn’t want to deal with.
She has work to do.
Bozer isn’t at his desk, so Riley snatches the noise-canceling headphones he keeps on a styrofoam head. They connect to her phone automatically.
She plays white noise. That’s all she’s been able to tolerate listening to since…
Since.
It blurs out the whispers. No one comes to talk to her. Everyone moves on while she’s the rock stuck in a divot in the river watching them float downstream to somewhere greener.
Riley wishes she couldn’t see it, but she does. Too many years of deciphering body language and managing moods means she can’t not see it. People are moving on, Mac is moving on, but she’s being left behind.
People ask how she’s doing. They feed her. Take care of her. They tell her they understand because hey, they’ve lost a parent too, and all Riley wants to do is scream at them because they don’t understand he was so much more than just her dad.
Was. She hates that word now.
People use the word ‘was,’ and when her throat bobs they look at her in pity. The reassurances that follow aren’t really for her; they’re items on the checklist of Things to Say to the Pretty Girl Who’s Sad.
Her whole life, Riley has depended on her ability to read between the lines of people’s words and actions.
Her survival instincts are killing her.
*****
Mac avoids the lab.
It’s the cowardly thing to do, but fuck, what is he supposed to say to her? He promised to keep her afloat, but he’s barely treading water himself.
They can’t both drown.
So he sits at his desk, a place he uses so infrequently he often forgets he even has one. Might as well tackle the mountain of paperwork waiting for him. He won’t return to fieldwork until next week.
He doesn’t blame Matty for benching him. He’s always more reckless with his own life after the death of someone else. One dead agent was already one too many.
A gentle knock against the open door rouses him from his thoughts. Hands in her back pockets, Desi leans against the doorframe, wearing jeans and an old Army t-shirt. One of his, not one of hers. “Have you finished that report?” she asks by way of greeting.
Mac doesn't have to ask which one she's talking about. He'd been putting it off for some time now—the write-up of a quick stateside op he and Desi had gone on. The last op before. Before…
He forces himself to finish the sentence.
The last op before Jack died.
“Not yet. Did you?”
“Yeah. Just want to make sure our stories match before I turn it in.”
His lips curve slightly as he exhales forcefully—barely a snort, definitely not a laugh. “Probably a good idea,” he says, holding her gaze and nodding once. Permission to enter his personal space.
She crosses to him, standing behind his chair and loosely wrapping her arms around his neck. “So are we calling it ‘impromptu catch and release training’ or are we leaving that part out entirely?”
Not for the first time—far from it, actually—they’d lost the criminal they were sent to retrieve. They found him, of course, but there were several hours during which their hostage was unaccounted for. Mac blamed Desi. Desi blamed him. In all honesty, it was a mutual effort; they were a little too distracted with each other and not focused enough on the job.
“I was thinking more like ‘capture, mark, recapture’ and then making something up about his failure to contact anyone during the release window,” Mac replied.
“Matty will see right through that.”
“As if she hasn't saved her own ass in a report before.”
Lips grazing his ear, Desi murmurs her agreement. Automatically, Mac leans into her, savoring the comfort of just being near her. His hands find her forearms, holding her to him lest she try to leave. Their relationship is in a good place right now, all things considered. By now Mac has learned to enjoy it while it lasts.
“What do you want for dinner?” he asks.
“I don’t know.”
“Well I know what I want after dinner, so you need to pick what we eat.”
She hums. “And what is it you want?” Her fingers trace circles on his chest, and Mac has a feeling she knows full well what he has in mind.
“You.”
Desi checks to ensure they’re alone, then kisses him. She teases, “You drive a hard bargain, MacGyver.”
“It’ll be worth it.”
She kisses him again, slow and loving, and Mac loses himself in her for a bit. The best kind of distraction. She keeps his mind off his grief, at least for a little while. He’s never asked; she just seems to know he needs it. That if he was left alone with his grief all the time, he’d be drowning the same way Riley is. Thoroughly and completely.
He wonders how long the last passenger of the Titanic flailed in the water before succumbing to the cold. Or if they watched the iceberg cleave the ship apart and just let themselves sink beneath the waves.
Too perceptive, Desi seems to realize the negative direction his thoughts turned and pulls away entirely, leaning on the edge of his desk and facing him fully. “Have you talked to Riley today?”
“No.” And he wasn’t planning on it.
“Other people are talking. Whispering, mostly. About her.”
That’s news to Mac. Although, maybe it shouldn’t be, given that people sometimes stop talking and stare when he walks into a room too. Still…he feels like there’s nothing he can do. He doesn’t know how to reach her. After Vitez’s trial, Riley retreated even more into herself, becoming a shell of the person she once was. It might be Jack who died, but Riley’s the one who became a ghost.
A very dangerous ghost.
“I don’t know how to help her, Des. I’ve tried talking to her. She won’t answer anymore.”
Desi’s lips twist into a sad half-smile. “Just keep listening. She’ll talk, even if it’s not with words. If she’ll open up to anyone, it’s you.”
Mac wants to believe the hopeful look on Desi’s face, wants to believe that Riley might let him in. He swore he’d keep them all afloat, but Riley is a sinking stone, getting pulled deeper and deeper and Mac isn’t sure he can swim fast enough to retrieve her and bring her back to the surface. “I hope you’re right.”
*****
She’s hyper-focused on her laptop and wearing headphones, but Mac has no doubt Riley is aware of his presence. She always is. He slides into the seat across from hers and waits, anxiously squeezing his hands together beneath the table. When she finally acknowledges him, her eyes are glassy and unfocused like she hasn’t looked up from her screen in hours. Knowing her, she probably hasn’t. She’ll have a raging headache by the end of the day if she doesn’t quit soon.
As casually as possible, he asks, “What are you working on?”
She blinks. “I’ve spent the last few days hacking Interpol. Tracking her colleagues should give me a lead on other members of Vitez’s organization.”
Her answer is so at odds with everything he’s observed lately. It’s logical. Rational, even. The same it would be if it had been a total stranger who died in that explosion, deliberately eliminated by these people. Mac almost wants her answers to sound crazy—anything to outwardly show how her grief is affecting her.
How is he supposed to keep her grounded when he can’t identify what’s carrying her away?
“Make any progress?” It’s an uphill battle to keep his tone nonchalant. She has to know he’s fishing, but he still doesn’t need to be obvious about it.
“Some.”
He’s not sure what else to say. Talking to Riley used to be so easy, but now every word, every gesture, every inflection of his voice feels awkward, like he’s stumbling in the dark in search of something that might not even be there anymore.
That feeling. That warm, homey feeling that used to burn between them. The one that says, You’re safe here. With me. Due to both of their self-isolation, due to their desire to grieve and process alone, the warmth has fizzled out, leaving only the orange glow of coals amidst the ashes. She’s his family, what little of it he has left, and Mac refuses to lose her too. He needs to coax the flames back to life—a rekindling.
“How can I help you?” He’s asked the same question many times in the last few weeks. It’s the only question he feels sure of. And he’ll keep asking it, over and over and over, until she finally gives him an answer.
A direction.
A path leading out of the dark.
She shakes her head. “You don’t have to. You’re busy with your own work.”
“Riles,” he says softly. “I want to.”
Riley glances at the stool next to her, then back at him, and Mac hopes she’s at least considering saying yes. He can’t help her if she won’t let him in. He knows that better than anyone. Riley stares at him a while longer. But then, finally, she says, “Okay.”
They spend hours sifting through the data she collected, but no leads turn up. And for once, Mac is okay with that, because by the time they’re packing up to head home for the night, he’s found a different sort of lead.
One to her.

Absentee
Character: Jason Todd x Fem!Reader
Summary: When Y/N fell in love with Jason Todd, she didn’t realize the normalcy she lost would become such a problem in their relationship. And she didn’t know how much pain it would cause to hide her boyfriend’s secrets.
Word Count: 4,600 – One Shot
A/N: This is probably a really personal story. And you all might hate it or not relate to it. But oh well...
Tumblr media
Y/N had her music playing in her headphones just quietly enough so she could hear them announce when her plane was boarding.
Between corporate holidays and what was left of her vacation days for the year, she was able to go home for a week and a half.
Only, she was hoping that this year she wouldn’t be going home alone.
But when Jason got sucked into a case two weeks before their flight back to her hometown, she knew there was no way he’d be accompanying her.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N. I just–“ Jason had tried to tell her when she realized they weren’t going to be spending the holidays together.
“You don’t have to apologize. There are more important things right now than meeting my crazy family,” Y/N laughed lightly. “But they’ll be bummed.”
Jason still looked so down guiltily. He knew that Y/N had been downplaying how excited she was for her family to meet him.
Yeah, Y/N was upset, but her family was even more upset. Being in a different part of the country and them never putting in the effort to visit her, they had yet to meet Jason. Even when the two of them had been dating for 10 months.
Y/N had met all of Jason’s brothers, along with Bruce and Alfred. It had all been against his will, his family strategically running into them or invading his apartment when they knew Y/N would be there. Jason acted annoyed by it, but Y/N knew he was happy for her to meet them and without him having to act like he cared.
But Jason had only ever waved on FaceTime to her family or sometimes answered calls from them when Y/N left her phone next to him and went to another room.
It wasn’t like Y/N needed her family’s approval. She knew what she wanted and what was best for her. Their opinions didn’t hold as much weight with her as they thought.
But Y/N also had never introduced her family to a boyfriend before. Things either fizzled out before then or the relationship was so casual that the thought of even mentioning a boy-toy’s name in passing to her family made her want to jump out a window.
———
“So Jason couldn’t get out of work last minute?” Y/N’s older sister, Kate, asked as they drove to her house after picking her up from arrivals.
And so it began.
“No,” Y/N answered. “His boss is sort of an asshole. He’s a workaholic and can’t fathom why anyone else would ever be anything different.”
The truth was that Jason didn’t really have a job. When it came to income, Jason was resourceful. He was still a hitman for hire. But once the killing part of that job stopped – which was long before Y/N ever met him – it didn’t rake in as much money. Most of his money was either stolen from criminals or he would work odd jobs here and there.
However, the lie Jason and Y/N had agreed on was that he was a mechanic. And Jason did know absolutely everything there was to know about cars and motorcycles. He’d even promised Y/N that if she ever decided she wanted him to drop the vigilante life, he would do just that and start his own mechanic shop. But Y/N knew better than to ever ask that of him.
“Cars don’t stop breaking – even around the holidays,” Y/N joked darkly.
“Mhmm,” her sister answered.
Y/N already knew what her family thought of her boyfriend’s “job”: it wasn’t good enough for them.
The only reason they let it slide was because they knew Bruce Wayne was his adoptive father. Therefore they interpreted Jason’s ‘lack of ambition’ as his personal rebellion against his privilege and upbringing.
“Mom said he sent flowers and a bottle of wine to the house today and apologized for not being able to make it,” Kate added.
Y/N quickly looked at her in surprise.
“So I’m guessing from your reaction that it wasn’t your idea,” Kate teased.
“No,” Y/N shook her head. “He didn’t even tell me he did that.”
That was a Bruce Wayne move for sure. It didn’t matter that Jason had a rocky relationship with him, the Wayne charm and manners were deceivingly contagious.
————
Later that night, when everyone was in bed and Y/N decided to finally unpack. And she was surprised to find two of Jason’s t-shirts hidden in her bag. They were her favorites of his, always stealing them. Mostly she wore them to lounge around the apartment or to wear to bed. But her favoritism was in no way hidden.
Jason must’ve snuck them in her bag while she wasn’t looking.
Y/N smiled as she grabbed one of the shirts and raised it to her nose. It still smelled like him.
It was enough to make her feel guilty for not having called him yet. She’d texted him that she landed, but other than that, she’d been pretty silent.
She grabbed her cell and dialed.
“Hey, you.”
He always answered her calls as if they made his day, even if she’d called him multiple times that day already. His reaction to her calls never failed to make Y/N smile.
“I didn’t really expect you to pick up,” Y/N admitted.
“Always got time for you,” he answered lightly.
But then she heard background noise: wind blowing, distant sirens, people shouting at each other nearby.
Jason was on patrol. Or maybe he was doing some recon.
But Y/N knew not to ask.
“I see some of your clothes made the trip,” Y/N commented through a smile. Jason could hear the smile in her voice. “Those t-shirts have a mind of their own…”
“And my mom thought the flowers and card were sweet,” she added.
“I might not have met her yet, but I know that’s not gonna be enough to win her over,” Jason answered darkly.
Y/N didn’t say anything, because they both knew he was right.
“Flight was fine?” Jason asked, changing the subject.
“Mhmm.”
“I miss you.”
Y/N shook her head and laughed. “No, you don’t. I’ve been gone for like 12 hours.”
“Doesn’t matter.”
She rolled her eyes. “Always the romantic.”
More sirens could be heard. They sounded closer this time. “Are you being careful?” All playfulness had disappeared from her voice.
“Of course.”
Y/N sighed. “Jason, I’m serious. Please, be safe.”
“I know. I know. Don’t worry about me.”
“You know that’s not gonna happen, J.”
He ignored her comment. “I love you.”
“Love you, too.”
————————
To say Y/N’s time at home was rough…was an understatement.
If Y/N wasn’t being asked a million questions about Jason, she was being interrogated for why he wasn’t there. And if Jason wasn’t the subject of the conversation, people acted like she was single – some even talking about setting her up.
Y/N realized she preferred the former.
Every year, her family threw a giant party.
And for the past five years, Y/N had always been the only one that was single. All of her siblings, all of her cousins, all of their family friends, all of their neighbors…every single one of them had a significant other during those years.
Everyone...except her. Now, this year, all of them had kids or were expecting.
It was exhausting.
Sometimes Y/N felt like they were all robots programmed to do the exact same things at the exact same time –  no original thought to be had.
Y/N would be lying if she didn’t spend most of the party wishing Jason was at her side. He would make fun of awkward situations with her. And he would stick up for her when her family teased her a little too much.
The other thing Y/N wasn’t prepared for was unintentionally studying  her family’s boyfriends or husbands. She felt like she was watching everyone’s relationships through a different lens now that she herself had her own. And to put it as kindly as possible…she was not impressed.
Y/N noticed how none of the men offered to help in the kitchen, instead deciding to sit on the couch and watch football and scream at the television. Or how when her cousin handed her son to her husband, and he acted like he didn’t even know how to hold the one year old. And later, when his diaper needed to be changed, he handed him back to his wife as if he had no idea how to do it himself.
Yet her family was stuck on Jason not being able to visit or that he was a mechanic.
What did someone’s job matter if they treated her like she was their world and he the best thing to ever happen to her?
If Jason were here, he would be in the kitchen cooking. And if they had a kid, it would be a 50/50 job – not a burden only Y/N had to bare. He would try to get to know everyone because he would want to know the people who raised the woman he loved. He’d make sure to check in on Y/N every once in awhile, making sure she didn’t need anything.
Thinking about it all made Y/N miss Jason even more.
Needing to get some air, she decided to go outside and let the winter chill refresh her. It had been getting too hot in the house.
Y/N pulled her phone out of her back pocket and tapped Jason’s name.
“Hey, you.”
“Hi,” she sighed.
Just hearing his voice made her feel a bit better and tension left her body.
“What’s wrong?” Jason quickly asked.
“Nothing. Just…wanted to check in.”
For a second, she was going to explain that she had the sudden realization that all the men connected to her family were trash. And witnessing it was making her miss him more. But she didn’t really want to waste her breath and she figured she’d just come off dramatic more than sincere.
“Are you at your apartment?” She asked quickly.
“Yeah, I’m gonna leave for patrol in a bit…”
Then Y/N’s mind suddenly thought, ‘Fuck it.’
“Jason?”
“Yeah, kid?”
“If you were here…” She began softly.
“Mhmm,” he encouraged.
“What would you be doing?”
Jason was a bit confused by the question for a second. But he slowly got what she was asking.
“Well,” he took in a shallow breath. “I would’ve stolen Alfred’s famous chocolate chip cookie recipe and whipped up those bad boys to bring over. And I’d pretend to care about football with your dad.”
That made Y/N laugh.
“I’d help your mom in the kitchen, even when she pretended not to want it.”
“Really laying it on thick, huh?”
But Y/N knew he was right. Jason was the cook between the two of them – and a good one, too. He also was a helper. He couldn’t sit back and watch someone do something while he did nothing. No matter how big or small.
“Shhh,” Jason reprimanded and then continued. “But most importantly, I’d try to get as many embarrassing stories about you as I possibly could.”
“Well, thank goodness you’re not here then,” she teased with a roll of her eyes.
Jason was quiet a second before he asked, “Wanna tell me what’s wrong now?”
“Nothing’s wrong. Just miss you.”
“I miss you, too.”
“All my family’s boyfriends and husbands are losers. And I guess I’m just now realizing it.”
“Ahh,” Jason noted.
Now he really knew why she’d asked her question.
“It’s snowing here,” he told her as he looked out the window. “It’s almost making Gotham look pretty.”
“Are you going to the manor for Christmas?”
“Probably not,” Jason answered.
“Jason,” she grumbled. “What are you going to do instead? Sit in your apartment alone?”
“I’m gonna patrol. Crime doesn’t take holidays, Y/N.”
“Cheesy,” she pointed out. “Please be with your family, Jason. I don’t want you to be alone. OK?”
“I’ll think about it.”
Y/N knew that was as good as it was going to get.
Then she felt something on her cheek and she looked up. “Hey, it just started snowing here, too…” She told him with her head tilted back.
“I love you,” he sighed.
“I love you, too. Be careful tonight, Jason.”
Y/N gave herself a few more moments outside before returning to the party.
When she walked back inside, she immediately heard her name. But no one was calling to her.
She was being talked about.
She recognized her mom and sister’s voices, and then a couple of her aunts. They were talking around the corner, completely unaware that Y/N was in hearing distance.
So Y/N couldn’t help but linger.
“She says he works a lot. Every time I facetime her, he’s never there,” her sister Kate told the women. “I wouldn’t even really know what he looked like if it weren’t for her photos that she’s sent me. He doesn’t have any social media.”
“I just can’t believe he couldn’t get work off. Around the holidays?” Her mom added in utter disbelief. “Sounds like it won’t be surprising when she finds out he’s been unfaithful,” one her aunts commented.
The group hummed in agreement, but also disappointment.
“He doesn’t even live in Metropolis. He lives in Gotham,” her mother supplied, only further backing the idea that Jason wasn’t committed. “God knows why. But I hate that Y/N is constantly going there. No good news comes from that city.”
Y/N clenched her teeth in anger.
If only they knew the truth about Jason.
He was a hero and risked his life every night for an entire city – a city that had done nothing but hurt him. And he was 20 times the man than any of the men in their family.
She just wanted to scream at them for being so judgmental about a person they’d never even met.
But she couldn’t.
So Y/N stormed up to her childhood bedroom and decided she had enough of the party.
She shouldn’t have come home for the holidays. She would’ve rather waited for Jason to get back from his Red Hood work than listen to her family misjudge the first man she ever truly loved and wanted to share with them.
————————
Y/N was so tired when she got off the plane.
She felt like a zombie as she walked to baggage claim to grab her duffle.
What she wasn’t expecting was to find her boyfriend waiting for her in arrivals.
Y/N had told him she would just get a car.
But Jason seemed to have other ideas.
Y/N’s entire face brightened at the sight of him.
She practically ran to him and jumped into his arms.
Jason chuckled at her enthusiasm.
“What are you doing here?” She asked, her words muffled by his body.
“I thought I’d surprise you,” Jason said through a smile before he kissed her head.
Y/N didn’t respond, just held him tightly.
“Come on. Let’s get your bag and head home,” he finally told her.
“So, how was it?” Jason asked once they got into his car. Y/N shrugged, “It was fine.”
Her lack of details and curt response was enough warning for Jason to realize things were not totally fine between them.
He didn’t bother asking for more details during the car ride home. Instead, he answered all her questions about what he had been up to, how the case was going, if his family was alright.
Once they got back to Y/N’s apartment in Metropolis, the grace period seemed to be over.
Y/N had grown quiet as she moved around her apartment, unpacking and putting all her things away.
Jason walked into her bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed as she folded clean clothes. “This might be a shot in the dark. But I can’t help but feel that you’re not happy with me,” he finally pointed out.
She didn’t answer or look at him, just kept folding.
“Did something happen while you were at home?” Jason pushed.
She still didn’t answer. So Jason reached for her hands, holding them gently.
“Hey, talk to me. What’s going on?”
“I just didn’t expect how hard it was going to be…” she finally whispered with a bowed head.
“What would be?”
“Just going home without you,” she explained.
“Did something happening?”
“I mean, kinda? Not really. They just…” she hesitated. Did she really want to confess all of this to him? She knew it would only hurt him. "They think you’re a bad boyfriend.”
Jason just nodded slowly.
He should’ve seen this coming. Of course her family didn’t think he was good enough. How could they think anything different?
“I’m just…fucking frustrated,” Y/n groaned. “I knew what I was getting into when you told me about your other life and who you really were. I was willing to keep your secret and protect it. I just never thought about how hard it would be keeping it from my family.”
She shook her head. “They think you’re not committed or something. And that…that you’re probably cheating on me.”
The idea of him ever doing that her made Jason sick to his stomach.
“I’m sorry,” Jason mumbled.
“What?” Y/N gasped. “You haven’t done anything wrong.”
“But I have,” he argued. “I put you in this position.”
“No, I did. I did when I fell in love with you,” she clarified.
“But I don’t want you lying to the people you love.”
“I’m not telling you this because I’m mad at you or blame you, Jason. I’m trying to tell you why I’m frustrated.”
She rubbed her face. “I just want them to know what an amazing person you are...and how brave and selfless. How you take care of me and love me and…and protect me.” Her eyes began to water. “They’re never gonna know the real you…even when they do meet you. And I fucking hate it.”
“So what if you told them?” Jason offered.
Her eyes widened at that. “Jason…”
“I’m serious. What if you told them?”
She thought about it. But she already knew the answer.
“It wouldn’t do any good. If I told them, then they’d be worried about me. Worried that your other life was putting me in danger. Worried that I would get pulled into it.”
Jason knew she was right.
Her family probably preferred an absentee boyfriend over a vigilante.
“But I see how the shitty men that have joined my family are. And you’re nothing like them. You’re so much better. And they’ll never even know.”
“Come here,” Jason muttered before he pulled her to him.
He let her body sink into his as he held her.
“I’ll do anything you want,” he whispered as he rubbed her back. “I just want you to be happy.”
“I always wondered what it would be like to finally been in a relationship – to just have someone on my team no matter what. I went to all those family gatherings thinking I’d never have it. And once I did, once I found you…” Her thoughts died out. “I just never expected it to be this way.”
“Do you regret it?” Jason asked as he pulled away to look in her eyes.
Her brow furrowed. “Regret what?”
“Being with me. Falling in love with me.”
Her heart broke at the question. “Oh, Jason. Of course not. Never.”
“What if I stopped?” He asked.
“No. I would never ask that of you,” she quickly shot down.
“I’d do it for you,” he tried to argue.
“I know you would. But I’m not asking. Because I know what it would do to you. Every time you’d see something in the news, you’d hate yourself. Because you would convince yourself that you could’ve stopped it. And maybe you would be right.” She took in a deep breath. “Red Hood isn’t just something you do. He’s a part of you. And even though I worry about you constantly, I’m never gonna tell you to stop.”
Jason took his time in reading her face.
“OK?” She pushed.
He nodded.
Then he embraced her once again.
“I’m sorry you have to keep my secrets,” he breathed into her hair.
————————————
Y/N walked into Jason’s apartment.
It was a Friday night and they agreed to have her come to his place this weekend.
Jason was always weary of her coming to Gotham, preferring her to stay in the safety of Metropolis.
He knew they couldn’t do the distance forever, and eventually they’d move into together. But he wasn’t ready to leave Gotham yet. And he didn’t want Y/N to lowering herself to such a city.
“J!” Y/N called when she walked in.
He had given her keys to his apartment quite early in their relationship, and told her she was welcome at his place any time. However, he wasn’t a fan of her getting there after dark. Gotham was Gotham, and he didn’t like her wandering around the city by herself just in order to give him a surprise visit.
An envelope on Jason’s kitchen counter caught her attention.
She nosily looked at it and saw that they were plane tickets to her hometown with both of their names on each of them.
She heard Jason walk up behind her. “What’s this?”
“A surprise,” he shrugged.
“What do you mean?” She laughed.
“We’re gonna visit your family,” he explained casually. “I called your mom and sister to find a weekend that worked.”
Y/N was shocked to silence.
“I know I fucked up when I couldn’t go with you during the holidays. I know this isn’t gonna solve everything. But I figured…it’s start.” Before he could say more, Y/N threw her arms around him.
————
Jason Todd knew how to throw on the charm. And no matter how thick he laid it on, it always felt sincere.
Y/N smiled as she watched her boyfriend interacting with her family.
He knew so much about each of them already, that he knew exactly what to talk about with every one of them.
For their long-weekend visit, they had decided to stay with her sister.
Jason knew she would be the hardest to win over and was the most protective over Y/N. He made it his personal mission to befriend her and show her how much he loved her little sister.
Y/N never said so, but Jason knew how important it was to her that Kate approved of him.
However, Jason hadn’t been able to have a conversation alone with her all weekend.
Until their last morning there.
Y/N was still sleeping when Jason had made his way to the kitchen.
He figured he could make Kate and her husband breakfast after housing them for a long weekend. And he made sure to start a pot of coffee while he was at it.
Halfway through making his specialty waffles, Kate walked into the kitchen rubbing her eyes.
“Oh, hi,” she greeted, clearly surprised to find Jason cooking in her kitchen.
“Morning,” Jason greeted.
“This is a surprise,” she said as she looked around the kitchen.
“There’s coffee if you want some.”
“T-Thanks…” she managed to mutter. “Do you need some help?”
“Nope. I got it. You just relax.”
Kate seemed to be unsure of how to behave when she was alone with her little sister’s boyfriend, and eventually sat on the kitchen stool with her coffee.
“Do you cook a lot?” She finally broke the silence with her question.
“I enjoy it,” he answered with a shrug. “I figured it’s the least I can do for you guys putting us up.”
“That’s very sweet of you, Jason.”
He continued cooking.
Kate figured this was her opportunity to get to know Jason – and not just through Y/N’s eyes. So, she started asking him question after question, and he seemed happy to answer them. Kate was surprised to find out about Jason’s traumatic childhood, making him realize that Y/N must’ve only shared his relation to Bruce Wayne and nothing more about his life before becoming an adopted Wayne.
Jason wasn’t surprised Y/N kept that part of his life to herself. She was protective of him that way. She always felt like his past was his story to tell, not hers.
“I know missing the holidays didn’t leave the best impression,” Jason told her after they’d been talking for awhile.
“You really mean a lot to Y/N. And your opinion matters more to her than you might think,” he added as he crossed his arms.
Kate seemed a little taken aback by how unafraid he was of confrontation.
He seemed more mature for his age – maybe for hers, even.
“I know I’m not going to win any of you over from just a single trip,” Jason continued. “But I’m going to work my ass off to make sure I get there.”
Kate smiled at that.
“I love her,” he told her quietly, but with determination. “She’s…Well, she’s the best thing to ever happen to me.”
Then he smirked. “And I’m not dumb enough to do anything to fuck things up with her.”
He took in a shallow breath. “I just…I just needed you to know that.”
Kate’s heart swelled from hearing her little sister’s boyfriend confessing his love for Y/N.
“Thank you for telling me that,” she whispered, trying to stop herself from crying. “I worry about her. And I hate that she’s so far away sometimes. I miss her.”
“She misses you, too,” Jason assured her.
“Thank you for taking care of her. I’m suddenly realizing you’re the only reason she’s eating anything that’s not out of a takeout container.”
Jason laughed. “I plead the fifth.”
Before any more could be said, Y/N walked into the kitchen as if she was sleep walking.
“Well, look who it is…” Jason teased.
Y/N walked to him silently, clearly wanting cuddles.
Jason chuckled at her, but gave her what she wanted. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head. He had kept the PDA at an absolute minimum while he had been around Y/N’s family. But he couldn’t help it when Y/N was her sleepy and adorable self.
“You sleep OK?” He tried to whisper to her.
But Kate still heard it and pretended to look down at her phone.
Y/N nodded into his neck, making him chuckle at her more.
This was new for Kate, seeing her sister being loved and loving someone. Her instinct was to say it made her uncomfortable. But it was just something she wasn’t used to.
Soon Kate’s husband woke up and they all ate breakfast together.
And a few hours later, Y/N and Jason were packed and their was a Lyft was waiting outside to take them to the airport.
Jason hugged Kate and her husband and thanked them for hosting them. Then he grabbed Y/N’s bags and gave her a moment alone with her sister as he took their stuff to the car.
“I think I owe the two of you an apology…” Kate told her little sister.
“You do?”
“I think I judged him a bit too much before really giving him a chance.”
Y/N winced, but nodded. “Yeah, you did, actually.”
“He really loves you.”
Y/N smiled. “He does.”
“I just want you to be happy, you know that right?”
“I know. But sometimes you think that what makes you happy is what would make me happy. Our lives are different. And we want different things. Just because my relationship looks different than yours doesn’t mean it’s worse in some way.”
Kate nodded sadly, knowing her sister was right. “I get that now.”
-----------
A/N: I was inspired to write this when I thought about how my own family would react to me having a boyfriend like Jason Todd: a man who was secretly a vigilante and had a past too hard for anyone to ever imagine. Hopefully, other people can relate to this and it wasn’t too personal. 😬
Let me know what you thought!!!

To resolve the situation, a girl interested in Pietro bribes a colleague with a mysterious past to go out with Wanda and, who knows, try to win her over. Or The one directly inspired by 10 Things I Hate About You.
Words:  11,620K (Complete)  /// Read on AO3 too || Part I
Warnings: PG, fluff, language.
She doesn't answer your messages during the weekend. So you don't press her. But then you are on the field, in physical education period, and she is practicing.
You sit on the bleachers, trying to focus on the math homework you needed to finish, when Monica joins you on the bench.
- Hey, girl. - She says hello as she sits down. And noticing your gaze shifting from the notebook to Wanda, she comments. - What happened between you two?
You sighed angrily.
- I did the right thing. - You comment with irony, but seeing Monica's frown in confusion, you add. - She wanted to kiss me after the party. I refused because she was drunk.
- But the plan was working! - said Monica.
- So what, you called the whole thing off.
Monica giggled, and raised her eyebrows slightly.
- Yeah, I know, but it was...it was before what happened. - She said, and you looked at her with confusion. - Pietro kissed me.
You blink and then laugh, shaking your head. And then Bruce comes to join you two.
- I just talked to Wanda. - He says. - Look, she said she hates you with the intensity of a thousand suns.
You let out a dry laugh, running your fingers through your hair.
- Thank you Bruce, that's very comforting to hear. - You tell him wryly, and he nods uncomfortably.
- Maybe she needs a day to calm down. - Monica says, and the three of you look toward the field, where Wanda was training veritably.
- Maybe two days. - You comment as you watch her knock a girl down.
//-//
You managed to fix most of your motorcycle. And then you found out that your mother punctured the tires, and you stormed angrily into her room.
- Have you completely lost your mind? - You shouted, and she just took off her glasses and crossed her legs while looking at you. - You slashed the tires on my motorcycle?
- I told you that you were grounded.
- That's ridiculous! - you say. - You don't have the slightest respect for my things.
- Don't talk to me that way. - She warned, and you let out a wry laugh.
- Be damn sure that when my bike is up and running, I'm out of here!
You shout before leaving the room, slamming the door.
You were coming out of geography class when Pepper Potts came to talk to you again.
She pulled you into a far corner behind the closet, and held out a hundred dollars to you.
- Take her to prom. - She said. - It's all here, limousine, clothes.
She pushed the money in your hands, but you pushed it back.
- I'm done with this game, Potts. - You retorted, feeling extremely uncomfortable.
You started to turn to leave, but Potts stepped in front of you.
- Hey, hey, wait. - She asked, and then pulled three more bills from her purse. - Three hundred dollars, okay? Come on, it's just a date.
You swallowed dryly as you accepted, trying to push to the back of your mind how wrong it was. And Potts smiled mischievously, then left.
//-//
You went back to the same record store in front of the laundry room where you found Wanda that other day. And you tried not to be so nervous.
Looking around, you found her walking around the shelves, and she was admiring a guitar. You put your hands in your pockets as you watched her put on the headphones and try the instrument, sitting down on one of the stools in the store.
You moved closer, and could see her reflection in the mirror a few feet away, but Wanda didn't see you, as her eyes were closed while her fingers danced on the guitar strings.
You smiled at the image, she looked so peaceful and comfortable. You couldn't disturb her. So you just left the store.
//-//
You saw Wanda again the next day. You didn't give up talking to her, and ended up going to the only bookstore in town that you knew sold the poetry that Wanda liked to read according to the list Monica had given you.
And while you were browsing the shelves, you found her looking distractedly at a stack of books. You walked over to her, following her across the opposite shelf, and when the shelf was over, you ended up in front of each other.
- Excuse me, miss. I'm looking for an Avengers comic book, have you seen any around? - You joked, but Wanda didn't smile, looking annoyed.
- What are you doing here?
- I hear you like poetry. - You answer and she sighs impatiently.
- You're so...
- Charming? - You interrupt with a smile, Wanda rolls her eyes as she walks away from you. - wholesome?
- Inopportune. - She says irritated. You bite your lip and walk toward her.
- You're not as mean as you think. - You tell her.
- And you're not as bad-ass as you think you are.
- Oh, someone still has her panties in a twist.
- Don’t for one minute think that you had any effect whatsoever on my panties.
You let out a smug chuckle.
- And where did I provoke?
- You provoked my vomit, nothing more. - She retorts, then grabs a comic book from the stack of books in front of her and slaps it against your chest, walking away.
You stare at the Avengers comic book in your hand for a few minutes before handing it back, completely impressed by the dialogue.
//-//
At break time, the day after your argument with Wanda, Monica and Bruce approach you in the snack line.
- She's still mad at me, people. - You tell them as you put some noodles on your tray.
- Look, you embarrassed her, you need to apologize. - Monica said and you frowned.
- I'm not going to apologize for not taking advantage of her drunken state! - You retort. - It's not my fault she's stubborn, and would rather be angry than admit she's wrong.
You finish your lunch and get out of line, Bruce and Monica follow you to the table. They don't sit with you, but watch you sit next to Carol at one of the circular tables.
- Come on, Y/N, try to think of something to please her. - Bruce says, and you roll your eyes.
- You can sing your apologies. - Mocks Carol from beside you, making you laugh. But then Bruce and Monica have serious expressions and you frown.
- Not a chance! - You warn them, but they are already letting out excited exclamations.
Carol starts laughing next to you.
- I have the perfect idea! - Monica says. - You can sing a romantic song in front of the whole school! Any girl would love it.
- I'd kill anyone who did that to me. - Carol mumbles humorously, and you laugh.
- Can I at least finish my lunch in peace? - you say, and Monica and Bruce nod in agreement. You point to the free chairs at your table, and they are very happy to sit with you.
//-//
And then you ended up outside the school again. After infiltrating the upper booth of the soccer field and getting a microphone and access to the outside speakers. You also had to pay the band guy, but you figured it was only worth it.
- You're just too good to be true. - You sang into the microphone as you walked out of the booth toward the stands. Your voice echoing across the field - Can't take my eyes of you. - You continued as you walked. All the students were looking around trying to figure out where the voice was coming from. - You'd be like heaven to touch. I wanna hold you so much. At long last love has arrived. And I thank God I'm alive - You sing and finally become visible to the people in the field. - You're just too good to be true. - You look for Wanda in the crowd in the distance, and sing the last part while looking and pointing at her. - Can't take my eyes of you.
And then the band starts playing, and you follow the beats, continuing to sing the song, as the crowd claps their hands and enjoys your performance.
You keep looking at Wanda throughout the song, and even as the security guards pull you off the field, you see that she is blushing, and smiling.
//-//
You end up in detention after hearing from Principal Harkness that she was impressed that you did romantic acts, and you laughed before leaving the office.
And then Professor Thanos was walking around the detention room, and stopped at the desk next to yours.
- You look nervous. - He said to the student who was sitting down.
- A little bit sir.
- You are sweating like a pig. - said Thanos.
- Yes sir. - agreed the frightened boy.
- Your eyes are red. - He said.
The boy nodded nervously, looking down at the table.
- You have pot, don't you? - said Thanos angrily, and the boy turned pale. - Hand it over right now.
After confiscating the boy's weed, Thanos walked back around, and then the door opened. You raised your head when you heard Wanda's voice.
- Professor Thanos, may I speak with you please? - she asked, entering the room and walking towards the man.
- What can I do for you, Miss Maximoff?
- I have some ideas for improving the team. - She says.
- Great! But we'll talk about them later. - Thanos replies with a serious expression, and as he looks across the room, Wanda looks at you, and quickly signals the window of the room. You blink in confusion, and when she whispers "window," Professor Thanos turns to her again.
- As you know, we have an important match against the Panthers coming up. - She starts to say, clearly trying to distract the man. You rush to gather your backpack and sneak out of his field of vision. - Wow, your muscles are huge! - She comments with a false sweetness in her voice, pulling the professor along and enabling you to run behind one of the pillars. The floor is very noisy and Wanda is trying to keep the man distracted by talking about match tactics, and when you finally reach the window, there is a metallic clatter and you think Thanos is going to see you, but then Wanda is pulling you by the arm again, and lifting up her own blouse.
The whole room makes a celebratory buzz and you try not to blush at the image of Wanda's exposed breasts, hurrying out, around the building on the fire escape and out the side.
//-//
It takes a while, but Wanda joins you.
- I can't believe you showed your breasts to a professor. - You remark with a laugh when she arrives.
- I can't believe you sang in front of the school. - She replies with a smile.
You shift the weight of your feet, staring at the ground for a second.
- Do you want to do something now? - you ask, and Wanda smiles as she nods.
You sneak off the school grounds, avoiding being seen by any security or teachers.
You end up in the city park, on the pedal boats in the middle of the sea.
- I can't stop thanking you for getting me out of detention. - You say with a smile as you pedal along together. - That was really nice.
- No problem.
You are silent for a moment, before you decide to ask her what she wants to know.
- What is your excuse?
- For what? - she asks confused.
- For behaving the way you do.
- I don't like to do what everyone expects. - She says. - Why should I meet other people's expectations and not my own?
- So you disappoint from the start, and then you don't have to worry?
She smiles lightly impressed.
- Yeah, something like that.
You nod, looking away.
- So you failed.
- How so?
- You've never disappointed me. - You confess, and Wanda looks at you. You smile at each other for a moment, before you look away again.
A few meters from the edge of the beach there is a paintball field.
- Hey, are you in? - you ask, pointing to the place.
- Yes. - Wanda agrees, slightly excited.
When you get off the pedal boat, you race to the paintball field, and Wanda absolutely beats you to it. You are laughing as you pay the entrance fee, watching her excitement.
After you put on your protective clothing, and get the paint ammunition, she moves first into the field, and hides, causing you to lose sight of her. You walk around looking around, and then feel something cold hit you on your back.
- Cheater! - You shout cheerfully, as you grab some paint from your ammunition pouch, and run toward Wanda, who is laughing as she tries to run away. You hit her in the leg.
And you stay in this race for several minutes, throwing paintballs at each other while laughing and trying to dodge the shots. At some point between ducking behind one of the obstacles, you corner Wanda, but she looks so cute that you don't have the heart to throw paint at her.
So you just put your hand down and smile. But seeing your hesitation, Wanda laughs and jumps at you, knocking you into the hay as she falls on top of you. You both laugh but your laughter dies down when you notice how close you are. And then she gets that look in her eyes again, and you want to kiss her, so you do.
And you kiss against the hay for many minutes, the feeling of having her against you makes you absolutely satisfied. And you continue there, until Wanda sighs against your lips, and you are warm, and it is better to stop before you are thrown out. And when you part, Wanda hits you on the head with a paint ball, and the moment changes completely. Soon you are back to playing and running.
//-//
On the way back to Wanda's house, you talked about the most varied subjects. When you are arriving, you start talking about the rumors that have been made at school about you two.
- I've heard that you sold your liver on the black market. - She remarked, making you laugh as you turned off the car.
- Those things are lies. - You retorted sheepishly as you got out and walked towards her backyard.
- The parole story?
- False - You deny it laughing. - The fight that ended in death in the parking lot?
- Rumor. - Wanda says with a laugh. - The robbery in New York?
- Just gossip. - You say. - And the kick in Tony Stark's nuts?
- True, he deserved it. - She says. - I'd do it again, he tried to grab me in the cafeteria.
You nod in agreement.
- What about your accent? - you ask curiously.
- I thought it was one at a time. - She jokes, and you shrug. You sit on her balcony. - It's real. My family is from Sokovia, we moved here when I was eight. - You grumble in agreement, waiting for Wanda's question. - Where were you last year? Since the parole story is a lie?
You laughed, looking away for a moment.
- I was in Colorado, living with my father. - You tell, and then look at her again, tucking her hair back behind her ear.
Wanda looks at you with curiosity and tenderness.
- Tell me something true.
- True? - you repeat with a thoughtful tone. - I hate peas.
She laughs lightly.
- No. Something real. - She clarifies. - Something no one else knows about.
- Okay. - You agree by coming closer. - You're sweet. - You tell her by lowering your head to her neck and kissing. - And sexy. - You kiss the skin on the other side. - And you're completely crazy about me. - You say as you bump your foreheads together, and Wanda laughs, pulling away a little.
- You have a huge ego, anyone ever tell you that? - she scoffs.
- I tell myself that every day. - You smile back, before kissing her. - Come to the prom with me.
- Is that a request or an order?
- Come on, go with me.
Wanda sighs.
- No.
- Why not?
- Because I don't want to, it's a silly tradition. - She explains.
- Now, nobody expects you to go.
- Why are you so insistent about it?
You look at her in surprise, feeling your heart race. Then of course you get defensive, because Wanda can't know. At your lack of response, she asks:
- What's in it for you? - She sounds suspicious and irritated.
- Now I need a reason to be with you?
- You tell me.
You look away, feeling extremely uncomfortable.
- You need therapy, you know. - You say back. - Has anyone ever told you that?
- Answer my question.
- Nothing. - You exclaim without patience, looking at her. - I get nothing, just the pleasure of your company.
You look out into the yard again, and Wanda lets out an angry exclamation before getting up and walking into the house, slamming the door.
You run your hands through your hair, hating that you accepted the damn money in the first place.
//-//
You thought Wanda was angry, but she calls you the next day after school. And she accepts the invitation. You are surprised, and feel guilty, but you are also happy to spend time with her.
She says she will accompany her sister, and meet you at the dance. So you stand at the entrance to the party, wearing your best clothes and trying not to look so anxious.
Wanda doesn't see you as she walks up the stairs to the party, and you bite your lip, impressed by how beautiful she looks.
You approach slowly, and whisper a hello in her ear, which startles her slightly, but she smiles turning to you.
- You look stunning. - You say breathlessly.
- So do you. - She replies with a smile.
You offer your arm for her to hold, and she accepts. You walk together toward the ballroom.
- How did you get such a fancy outfit? - she asks with a slight irony.
- Oh, I had kept it at home. For situations like this. - You joke.
- What situations?
- A date with a pretty girl. - You retort with a smile, and Wanda laughs lightly.
You walk to the entrance of the photos, and you lean against the pillar.
- I'm sorry I questioned your motives. - she says when you stop. - I was wrong.
You swallow dryly, feeling guilty. But you try to cover it up.
- You are forgiven.
Wanda smiles.
- Are you ready for the ball?
- Yes, miss. - You agree with a light laugh as you turn toward the party.
You dance together for a few minutes. The songs are terrible, but with Wanda, it's fun.
You also see Pietro and Monica dancing together, and Wanda exchanges a pleased look with her sister.
- Girl, have you seen him? - asks a redheaded girl walking up to Wanda. You know they are friends, and that her name was Nat or something like that.
- Who? - Wanda replies, confused.
- William! - she replies. - He asked me to come here.
You and Wanda exchange confused and amused glances.
- Natasha, please don't tell me you're hallucinating.
You were going to ask what they were talking about, but then you looked toward the stage and understood. You signaled for the girl to look, and she cracked a big smile when she saw Bruce Banner dressed as William Shakespeare waving at her, and walked off in your direction.
- I'm not even going to ask. - Wanda remarked with a chuckle before she went back to dancing with you.
And then the music is ending again, for a romantic one to take its place. You turn Wanda in your arms, kiss her tenderly for a moment, and then dance again, feeling her rest her chin on your shoulder.
And you dance for several minutes, and then someone pulls you away.
- Girl, what is Pietro doing here with that asshole? - Pepper asked aggressively as she pulled you away. - I didn't pay you to go out with Wanda and get nothing for it.
It was as if a bucket of cold water had fallen on you. Your gaze returned immediately to Wanda, and she was already looking at you with teary eyes.
- You have nothing to gain from this, have you?
she retorted wryly before walking away, bumping into you. You gave Potts one last look before following her.
- Wanda! Wait! Please! - You shouted as you walked out of the hall. She then stopped walking, and you let out a sigh. - Give me a chance to explain.
- You were paid to go out with me by the person I hate the most. - She retorted. - I knew it was a trick.
- No, Wanda. It wasn't like that.
- How was it then? An advance, and the rest of the money when you sleep with me?
- No! - You denied it with a shout. - I didn't care about the money! I cared about you.
Wanda shook her head, incredulously.
- You're different than I thought you were.
And then she turns and runs outside, and you sink your hands into your face, trying to calm yourself down.
- Where did she go? - You hear a male voice, and take your hands away from your face to see Pietro standing in front of you.
- Away. - You retort, feeling your stomach clench. - I screwed up.
- We did. - He says upset, putting his hands in his pockets.
- At least you got the girl. - You comment wryly before turning and walking away.
You think you're crying, but you don't care as you leave the party.
//-//
Your first lesson is literature the next day. And you know you will see Wanda, but you are hating yourself so much right now that you don't care. You arrive early for the first time in the whole school year, and sit in one of the back chairs.
As the other students arrive, you keep your head down, trying to distract yourself with your cell phone, even though you know that all your attention is on the girl sitting two chairs in front of you.
When Professor Fury finally starts the class, he is all excited.
- I guess everyone had time to finish the poem I asked for. - He announces standing at the front of the room. - Except for Mrs. Potts, who has an excuse. - He scoffs lightly, mentioning the confusion that occurred at the dance when you left, where Monica punched her in the nose. And now she was wearing sunglasses to cover up the purple. The whole room giggles at Fury's words. - Okay, does anyone want to start the reading?
The room is silent, but then Wanda raises her hand.
- I will.
- Lord, here we go. - Comments the teacher as the girl gets up, and stops at the front of the room. Wanda begins to recite the poem:
-I hate the way you talk to me. And the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare. - She narrates, without taking her gaze from the notebook - I hate your big dumb combat boots, And the way you read my mind. I hate you so much, that it makes me sick, And even makes me rhyme. - She pauses, taking a deep breath - I hate the way you're always right, I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh. - She looks directly at you, her eyes filled with tears and her voice trembling. - Even worse when you make me cry. I hate it when you not around. And the fact that you didn't call. But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you, Not even close, Not even a little bit, not even at all.
Wanda lets the tears flow as she finishes, and the room was too shocked to react. She rushes out next, grabbing her backpack on the way, and slamming the door.
You are trying to hold back your own tears as you stand up.
- I'm going to the bathroom, Mr. Fury. - You grumble as you leave, without waiting for permission.
But you don't find Wanda, and you decide that you’re simply not in the mood for school today.
//-//
You sell your motorcycle. You hate that it has the parts for the money Potts gave you, so when it is fixed, you call Carol, and she finds you a buyer. This means you are stuck with your mother for a longer period, but it seems like the right thing to do.
And then you text Wanda, asking her to meet you wherever she wants. She says she won't leave the house to talk to you, so you end up at her front door, shifting the weight of your feet before you decide to knock.
Wanda's father looks stern, and he doesn't smile when he sees you.
- Are you the girl who made my daughter cry? - he asks with a serious expression.
But then Pietro appears at his side, patting him on the shoulder.
- My God, Daddy, don't be like that! - he asks, smiling at you. - Y/N, you are here to apologize, I imagine. Let her talk to Wands.
Mr. Maximoff takes one last look at you before entering back into the house, and Pietro smiles, nodding his head for you to enter.
- Thank you, Pietro. - You tell him, and then he takes you upstairs.
He drops you at Wanda's door, and you take a deep breath before knocking.
- Come in. - You hear her voice on the other side.
Entering the room, you are slightly overwhelmed by the amount of visual information. Wanda has many posters. And she is sitting on the bed, with a book on her lap.
- Hey. - You greet her, closing the door. You leave your hands in your pockets, deciding whether to stand.
- Hi. - She replies, placing the book on the bed and crossing her legs. - What did you want?
You swallow dryly, and decide to sit on her bed, keeping your distance.
- To apologize. - You clarify, and she looks away. - Properly apologize.
- I don't know what you want me to say.
- I just want you to listen. - You retort and straighten your posture, feeling your heart soar. - I'm sorry I took Potts' money, because regardless of my motives, it was wrong to put your feelings on the line.
- Wanda frowns slightly, as if deciding whether to believe you or not. You clear your throat.
- I never should have accepted it in the first place, but mostly I should have stopped when I realized I was falling in love with you. - You say, and Wanda looks at you, surprised by your confession. - But I didn't stop, and I lied to you and kept deceiving you, when I should have told you the whole truth. I'm sorry I hurt you, Wanda. I swear I didn't think all of this would happen.
You take a deep breath, running your fingers through your hair. Wanda just stands there, looking at you as if trying to read your mind.
- I just wanted to say that. - You tell her feeling flustered,
- Are you in love with me?
Wanda looks at you intently, and you just smile shyly.
-Very much so.
And then Wanda approaches you, and when she is close to your face, she says:
- I'm still mad at you. - And then she kisses you. You have missed her lips, and unfortunately the kiss doesn't last long.
When you open your eyes, Wanda has already moved away again, leaning her back against the headboard.
- When you are no longer angry, can we do something together? - you ask her tenderly. Wanda stares back at you, as if to say something.
- I received my acceptance letter today. - She tells you suddenly, and you blink in confusion. Before you can congratulate her, she adds. - In California.
You look at her in surprise, feeling your heart race. Wanda was leaving.
- Oh. - You swallow dryly, shake your head slightly, and smile. - I'm proud of you, Wanda. Congratulations.
- I thought you'd be upset.
- No, it's okay. - You give her a sad smile. - I'll miss you, but it's amazing that you're going to college.
Wanda lets out a sigh, keeping quiet for a moment.
- What did you need the money for?
You are surprised by the question, and look away from her, feeling slightly uncomfortable that this subject is back. But you decide that Wanda has the right to know whatever she wants to.
- I needed to fix my motorcycle. - You tell. - My mom is... hard to deal with. We had a fight and she broke some parts with a hammer. The next day, Potts was offering me the money I needed.
Wanda looks at you for a moment, seeming to be absorbing the story.
- Did you fix it?
- Yes. - You confirm, but let out a humorless chuckle. - But I sold it later.
The girl looks at you, frowning in confusion. And you shrug.
- I felt bad about everything. I decided to try to do the right thing then. - You explain. - I think I'm stuck with my mother for a while now.
Wanda looks surprised at your conclusion, and you let out a sigh, flopping down on the bed as you stare at the ceiling. You are silent for a moment, and then Wanda crawls over to you and lies down beside you, looking up at you.
- What if you leave with me? - She whispers, running her fingers across your face, and you blink in surprise.
- What?
Wanda smiles shyly.
- I have a car. - she says. - And you could work, and we could share an apartment.
You straighten your posture, leaning on your elbow and looking at Wanda in amazement.
- Are you serious? - you ask, smiling, and she nods slightly. You let out a happy exclamation, and move in, kissing her on the mouth. Wanda giggles against your lips, but returns the kiss.
You quickly let go and sit down on the bed when Wanda's father suddenly opens the door.
- Keep this door open! - He warns with a stern look, and you swallow dryly.
- Yes, sir. - Wanda says with humor.
When he leaves, you throw yourself on the bed next to Wanda, and she goes back to reading while you lie beside her.
- Any chance you have any comic books around here? - You joke, and Wanda giggles, denying it with a nod.
You don't mind though, her company is enough to keep you distracted.
//-//
You end up using the money from the motorcycle sale to pay the deposit on the apartment you find for yourselves, fifteen minutes from her college. You get a job the same week, and you finally read the poetry that Wanda likes as you both drive towards California.

I have a request if you’re up for it. An MC who just arrived in the Devildom who’s lover just dumped them the day prior. The bros know MC isn’t emotionally or romantically available at the time but the bros still fall in love regardless. How will the bros handle the situation? Thank you! 🙏💗
Hi! I sort of took this idea and ran with it and wrote basically a headcanon short story for each bro lmao. Sorry I got a bit carried away but I hope you like this and it satisfies you! :)
Also thank you so much @midnight-dome for the help with Asmo, you’re a lifesaver

Lucifer:
The success of the program depends on your wellbeing
So he checks in on you every other day like clockwork
“Is there anything you need to make your stay more comfortable?”
You always say no
At first, he’s glad you’re staying in
Because it means less trouble for him
But when you skip all of your classes one day, he comes to your room ready to give you a firm reminder of your tasks here
He’s about to knock when he hears you sob
Now, Lucifer has heard a lot of crying in his life
But he’s never heard someone sound so completely broken
He shocks himself when he turns on his heels and walks away
He shocks himself even more when he texts the group chat and demands everyone leaves you alone for the day
That evening he comes into your room with a small plate of food
By then you were are least on top of your sheets
You knew he was gonna ask the same question as always
But this time, his words were different
“Is there anything I can do to help?”
“Help?”
He simply nods
And though he didn’t outright say what he meant by help, you knew
“I...don’t know?”
“Hm, okay. I’m going to listen to some music in my study. The door will be unlocked should you wish to join me.”
Then he’s gone
The few precious moments Lucifer isn’t working, he prefers to not be disturbed
So why on earth did he invite you to join him in his study?
He doesn’t have time to ponder it because the door opens and you come in with a blanket wrapped around you
The first night you both listen in comfortable silence
A few nights in, you start asking Lucifer about the records he puts on and he has no qualms educating you on it
On night 10 you tell him about the breakup
Once you’re done he, again, asks the same question
“Is there anything I can do to help?”
‘You’ve done more than enough to help me Lucifer, thank you.”
He finds himself blushing from the sincerity in your eyes and the warmth in your smile
That night you fall asleep before the record finishes
Surely you’d wake up aching if he left you in a chair
So he picks you up, carries you to your room, and tucks you into bed carefully
He tells himself he’s doing it for Diavolo
It’s for the program, this is his job
He’s gonna need time to accept his own feelings before he can tell you anything
For now, he’ll keep doing his “job” and spending evenings with you
Mammon:
He didn’t want to be your babysitter
He was a busy guy! He had stuff to do, money to make, things to steal
Some days he gets Beelzebub to keep an eye on you so he can do what he wants
One night in particular he heads to your room to make sure you won’t interfere with his plans
“Yo! The Great Mammon has things to do so don’t-”
He pauses when he sees you sitting on your bed with your headphones plugged into your laptop
He would have assumed you were just watching a sad movie by the tears streaks on your face
But the pain in your eyes…
He’s seen that look before
His brothers held that same look the day they fell from Heaven and lost Lilith
Mammon sits on the bed and you jump, finally noticing him
You expected him to make fun of you but instead, he grabs the tissue box on your bedside table and hands it to you
He glances at your laptop to see what you were watching and sees a paused video of you and someone else
You tell him about the breakup and Mammon listens closely
“What a jerk! Ya deserve better than that! I’d teach ‘em a lesson if they ever showed their face around here!”
You smile for the first time since he came in the room and he feels like he’s done something right
“How about we get some late-night food? I know a 24-hour restaurant with the best baked newt ever. Your treat.”
He’s shocked when you agree
He makes a point to hang out with you more often
He can’t recall exactly when you went from “a human” to “his human”
Maybe it was when you held his hand while you erased all your photos and videos of your ex from your computer
Or when you texted him at 3am because you couldn’t sleep and before he could even think about it he was up and on his way to your room
Or when he spotted you in one of his jackets while walking home from RAD
But his greed was kicking in and he wanted you to be his and only his
However, much like he puts himself first, he knows you need to do the same
So though his nature and mind wants to kiss you silly and have you for himself
Part of him knows he’ll ruin things if he lets his greed take over
So he’ll fight his nature and try his best to be patient
Leviathan:
He had been playing one of his games online
He’s on a big winning streak and feeling a bit cocky
He sees he’s been matched with someone else so he gets into gamer mode
Then he loses the first round
He’s a bit shocked and pissed that his streak was now broken but he has to prove his superiority to whoever this opponent was
So he rematches them
And loses again
And again
He loses 7 rounds in a row
By this point he is fuming
So like any salty gamer he sends a very lengthy, angry message to their inbox
Accusing them of using cheats and hacks because there was no way anyone was more skilled than him at this game
He gets a reply a few minutes later
“Um.....is this Leviathan? Avatar of Envy? It’s MC…”
You knew it was Levi because his username is the same across all his social media platforms
Cue Levi barreling into your room a minute later
“How are you so good!? You’re cheating, aren’t you!? You cheater!’
You weren’t cheating, you just had been playing games day in and day out to distract yourself so you got really good at it
Levi all but demands you to come to his room and show him what you know
You were already playing all night anyway so why not play with someone?
Initially, Levi would have you come over just to show him your tactics
(Also to get some team wins on his stats because he never has anyone to play with)
But you were actually pretty chill for a normie
Maybe if he exposed you to his otaku ways you would take to them and he wouldn’t be the only one in the house anymore!
You don’t become an otaku but you do get invested in almost every anime he shows you
He starts inviting you over for midnight premieres of new episodes
He starts buying extra merch because what if you wanted one?
He was used to disproving looks from his brothers when he mass buys stuff from Akuzon
But you only smile and listen when he tells you about his new special edition item
You never once judged him and his unconventional ways
This epiphany makes him extra nervous for your weekly hangouts
It was only a matter of time before you came across a break up in an anime
When the episode ended you told him about your break up and how the protagonist reminded you of yourself because they also were taking a break from love
Levi has seen this anime before actually
He remembers how the protagonist reacted to a side character confessing to them and it went bad
So while he knows he likes you, he holds off on saying anything because the last thing he wants is to be a bad story arc in your life
Lucky for him he’s always a flustered blushing mess so you shouldn’t suspect a thing
Satan:
He is the Avatar of Wrath so whenever there is rage, he is aware
He feels anger radiating through the house one day and thinks his brothers are just fighting again
Imagine his surprise when he realizes the source of the anger is coming from your room
He walks in and sees you throwing things around and screaming, your room was destroyed
He sees you’re about to step on some glass and instantly swoops in and picks you up so you don’t hurt yourself
But then you curl up against him and burst into tears
He stands there, not quite sure what to do
He ends up sitting on the bed and letting you cry for a while
You word vomit about your break up and he listens carefully and notes the anger welling up inside you as you speak
He knows all too well what anger can do to someone and a fragile human shouldn’t have to go through that
“Would you like some tea?”
He can spare 30 minutes for some small talk with the human if it meant that you wouldn’t be left in your thoughts
You look at him like he has three heads but agree because your room is a mess and you don’t wanna deal with it right now
Tea time becomes a daily occurrence and soon enough it escalates to full-on hangouts
Going to the bookstore, going to cat cafes, going wherever you wanted to really
One time you both took a day trip to the human world
Lucifer wasn’t happy to find out his brother and you were gone for an entire day but he lets it go when he sees that you’re smiling genuinely for the first time in weeks
What Satan didn’t expect was how these outings made him feel
He finds himself distracted from his books because he can’t stop thinking about how cute you looked holding that black cat at the cafe
Or how happy you looked when you took him to that ice cream shop in your hometown that you really love
He wakes up and you’re the first thing to pop into his mind
He’s not dumb, he knows he’s fallen in love
But he also knows this isn’t the right time, you aren’t ready
So he’ll keep being there for you as a friend
And if you ever want him to be there as something more, he’ll happily oblige
Asmodeus:
There was a movie night at the House of Lamentation
Today’s movie was an action movie, courtesy of Mammon
Amidst all the face punching and explosions, there was a budding romance between the main characters
After the third obnoxious makeout scene, you leave the room claiming you need to go to the restroom
But you leave just a *little* too fast and Asmo can feel something is up
And he thrives on gossip so he intends to find out what is it
He leaves the room a few minutes later and catches you in the hallway, determined to get you to spill the tea
You tell him about the breakup
He wasn’t prepared for the tea to be so bitter
“Oh. Well, you know what’s good for that? Face masks!”
He had to save face somehow and beauty was his default
He’s a bit shocked when you agree but you both ditch movie night to do face masks and talk a bit
He decides to share a couple of bad date experiences he’s had to make you feel better
“Trust me, you haven’t felt embarrassment until you have someone vomit Enfield brains on your new pants and shoes while at one of the hottest clubs in the Devildom.”
You spent the entire night giggling and listening to his stories
Devildom products are surprisingly effective on your skin so you keep asking Asmo to show you new products
Plus his company is nice
Self-care days become a common occurrence
Then those self-care days become self-care sleepovers
He starts intentionally waiting to try anything new because he wants you to be there when he does
He buys more of those scented candles you told him smelled nice
A few weeks later you’re having a self-care sleepover again and you have this really cute focused look on your face while painting your nails
He knows he likes you, but this was different than his usual attraction
He didn’t want to fuck you
Well he did but not just fuck you
He wouldn’t mind if there was something more
But you routinely ended your self-care nights by yelling ‘Fuck love!’ at the top of your lungs and laughing
So he knows now isn’t the time and he’s actually okay with that
You were a sight to behold regardless of his relationship status with you
But he hopes you’ll indulge in him one day
Beelzebub:
Mammon keeps pushing his human watching duties on Beel
But he doesn’t really care because he’s being paid in cheesecake
After his third day of keeping an eye on you, he notices you aren’t eating much
Being the Avatar of Gluttony, this is basically a crime
He starts bringing extra snacks with him when he hangs out with you
“I think the chocolate flavor is better than the vanilla. What do you think?”
He actually doesn’t have a preference
He just wants to know which snacks you like more so he can bring more of them
He makes a game out of it so you don’t think about how much you’re eating
“It motivates me to work out longer when I get a snack, could you help me?”
You sit on his back and after every pushup, you both eat a bit of whatever snack he has
He keeps going until he thinks you’ve eaten a decent amount
Or you say you’re getting full
Belphie notices that Beel is refilling his snack stash more often but he doesn’t say anything
Beel feels an immense sense of accomplishment when you finish your plate at dinner a few days later
Soon after you tell him about the breakup
“It hit me hard but you made it easier to cope, Beel. These hangouts are the highlight of my day so thank you.”
There’s a certain pang Beel gets in his stomach when he’s really hungry
Somehow your words made that pang happen in his chest
But this didn’t hurt him, quite the opposite actually
He felt good, he felt happy
It was strange for his stomach to be the quiet one while his heart went wild
But this wasn’t a change he minded too much
He wasn’t sure what to make of it but he knows he wants to figure it out with you
And he’ll take his time doing so because he liked how things were now
Belphegor:
He’s intrigued by you after the first week of your stay
He’s never seen a human who slept as much as he did
Frankly, he was impressed
Until Lucifer informed everyone about your recent breakup and made it clear to not upset you
That’s when Belphie realized these were not the leisurely naps he takes, but depression naps
One day he sees you sleeping in the living room and you looked so distressed
Sleeping was meant to be a peaceful state but you looked so unhappy
So he wakes you up
“You’re in my sleeping spot.”
You weren’t in his sleeping spot.
“Oh sorry, I’ll move-”
“You’re already here. We can both fit.”
Before you can protest he’s all comfy next to you and falling back asleep
Having another person next to you was kind of comforting so you let it go and go back to sleep
What you didn’t know was Belphie could partially influence your dreams
He can make them more pleasant but he can’t control what you dream about
He knows it works when he wakes up and you have a relaxed expression on your sleeping face
You wake up soon after looking confused
“Good dream?”
“I think? I had a dream I rode a unicorn to the moon then carved my initials into it?”
Napping together in the living room becomes a routine
And every time you woke up you told him about the dream you had with a small smile
A few weeks later he notices he no longer has to influence your dreams for them to be good
So he leaves you be and instead curls up in the attic for his afternoon nap
He wakes up a bit when he feels someone lay down next to him
It’s probably Beel
“Why didn’t you tell me you moved napping spots?”
His eyes open and he looks over to see you pouting at him
“I just sorta ended up here.”
“Well, I can’t nap without my cuddle buddy now can I?”
You’re teasing him and he should be annoyed
But he’s blushing
He spoons you to hide that fact, resting his forehead on your shoulder
But while your dreams were getting better, it didn’t mean you were ready to move on
So he just enjoys his intimate cuddling sessions with you and tries not to think too hard about the fact that he really likes how your body fits against his

❧ Anon asked: Heyy! I was wondering if you would like to write an Ateez soulmate!au headcanon? like what type of soulmate bond would they have (tatoos, colourblind untill they meet their soulmate, feeling pain when soulmate feels pain...) and how they will meet their soulmate very briefly. I hope is okay for you and i explained it well. Love the blog💞
❧ Anon asked: Hii can i request a fluff non idol soulmate au scenario of yunho? This is specific but can u include it where both of u are able to sense and feel each other's emotions and feelings? I love ur writing. Thank you 🥺🥺💕💕🥰🥰
❧ A/N: so I looked up a bunch of different soulmate aus so no one would have the same one and oml there are a lot of soulmate aus. Some of these are non idol!au as well this took me so fucking long to write omg each one is like the size of a drabble
~※ Main Masterlist ※~
Tumblr media
Hongjoong - You can hear whatever song your soulmate is listening to
Tumblr media
That familiar sound of singing echoed in your head. You were practically hypnotized by it. You were so entranced that you didn’t realize you had been zoning out while standing in front of the recording studio. You shook your head and headed into the studio. The group you were going to work with for the day stood up and greeted you. You noticed they were practicing for the recording. One of the boys got up and went into the booth to record. You put on your headphones, as did he. You started recording then started the track. Your mouth went slightly agape when you heard that familiar voice but this time in the headphones. You pulled yourself out of your thoughts when you heard the man asking for your opinion on how the recording sounded.
“I think...here, try it like this.”
You sang the last part, the part he had just recorded, changing a few of the notes to fit the track better. Now the man in the booth was the one with his mouth open. He blinked a couple times before looking back at the lyrics in front of him. He’d definitely have to say something when the two of you had a moment.
Seonghwa -  The outline of your shadow is your soulmate
Tumblr media
You stood with your back against the sun, your shadow hitting the pavement in front of you. You stared at the shadow trying to engrave the outline into your memory. You were so curious about the shadow that you saw whenever the sun was bright- What were they like? Did you know them already? What did they look like? Who were they?
While you were lost in thought, your friend Seonghwa walked up beside you. He called out your name bringing you back to reality. You looked over at him, sending him a smile. You looked down at his shadow. The shape felt familiar to you. Too familiar...
Yunho - Feel each other's emotions
Tumblr media
You sighed as you leaned back in your desk chair. You were far too stressed out from your homework. You really just wanted to stop worrying about your homework but you had to get it done for class the next day. You ran a hand through your hair, deciding maybe you should take a bit of a break. You made your way to the kitchen to grab a snack and some water. When you returned to your desk, you heard your phone ringing.
“Hey Yunho,” you said answering the phone
“Hey Y/N. You feeling okay?”
“I’m just a little stressed out right now. How’d you know?”
“I guess I just have a sixth sense,” he chuckled, “You wanna hear what Mingi did today?”
You let him tell you the funny story of his adventures with Mingi, making you feel a lot better. He was always right there the moment you started feeling bad, even if you didn’t tell him. Maybe he did have a sixth sense...
Yeosang - A red string tied around your pinky is connected to your soulmate’s pinky
Tumblr media
You’ve never seen your red string. You knew it was there, everyone had one, but you were never close enough to your soulmate to actually see it. That is, you didn’t see it until you moved to Seoul.
You were out at a local coffee shop just relaxing on your day off. You sipped on your drink, a book in your other hand. You looked up briefly when a small group of boys dressed in athletic wear wandered into the coffee shop. They were chatting among themselves as they got in line to order their drinks. You didn’t think much of them until you went to take another sip of your coffee. Out of the corner of your eye you saw a bright red string tied in a bow around your pinky. You followed the string with your eyes until you were met with one of the boys. He noticed you staring between him and your pinky, his eyes glancing down at his own pinky. He quickly muttered something to his friends before coming over to you.
“Hi, I’m Yeosang.”
San - Timer for when they’ll first meet
Tumblr media
“You have to stop obsessing over your timer,” Wooyoung peaked over at San’s wrist
“It’s almost hit 0 though! I’m going to meet them any minute!”
San and Wooyoung continued to walk through the halls of the KQ building towards the practice rooms. They didn’t notice you also walking down the hall. You were looking down at your phone when you bumped into something- or rather, someone. You apologized profusely, a dark pink blush appearing on your cheeks. The blush was mostly from the embarrassment of running into someone but also because the person you ran into was rather attractive. You quickly scurried away down the hall. San and Wooyoung just looked at each other in confusion and surprise. Wooyoung’s eyes glanced down at San’s wrist.
“Hey, look!”
He pointed at the counter on San’s wrist. There was a large zero where the numbers counting down used to be. San looked up at Wooyoung then back down the hall where you went.
“Wait, were they...?”
Mingi - Write something on your own skin, appears on the other’s skin as well
Tumblr media
You were too young to know. The two of you just thought you both had magic powers or something. No one told you about how soulmates could draw and write on each other. You wish someone had.
You rushed into your kindergarten class and sat down at your table. You pulled out a piece of paper and your crayons. You started drawing, your eyes constantly glancing up at the door to the classroom.
“Y/N!”
In came your best friend Mingi, a large smile on his face. He sat down beside you and looked over at your paper.
“That’s a pretty rainbow,” he smiled
“Thank you,” you giggled, “You wanna draw too?”
You dug around for another piece of paper but you didn’t notice Mingi had already pulled out a pen and began drawing on his arms. You giggled when you started seeing the flowers and stars appearing on your own arms. You took out your own pen and doodled on the free skin on your arms. The two of you happily laughed and doodled together completely oblivious that you were sitting beside your soulmate.
Wooyoung - Get the same injuries as your soulmate does
Tumblr media
“My soulmate needs to chill out. This is the third bruise this week,” you groaned while putting some ice on your leg
You left the nurse’s office and headed towards the entrance of your school. Just as you were about to leave, your friend sent you a text. You mentally slapped yourself. You had promised your friend that you’d come with them to the school’s dance club meeting. You really wanted to reschedule due to your bruised leg but knew they’d scold the hell out of you for rescheduling on them for the third time. You sent a text saying you’d be there in a second before limping down the hall towards the music room.
You arrived at the music room a few minutes later, your friend standing outside the door looking impatient.
“There you are!” they looked down at your leg, “Did you get hurt?”
“I didn’t,” you huffed, “My soulmate did.”
“Ah, well at least Wooyoung won’t be alone then.”
“What?”
“He hurt himself and can’t really participate today so the two of you can hang out.”
The two of you walked into the room, the other members of the club greeting you. Your friend introduced you to Wooyoung before going off with the other club members. You tried to strike up a conversation with him, asking him about his injury.
“I bruised my leg trying out a new dance move,” he said pulling up his pant leg to show you the purple bruise that looked similar to yours, “What about you?”
You said nothing, only showing him your own bruise. He looked between your leg and his, his eyes going wide in surprise. His eyes wordlessly said what you were both thinking.
Jongho - Each other’s initials on their wrist
Tumblr media
“Just come with us, Y/N!” Wooyoung whined, “It’ll be a lot of fun!”
“Will you shut up if I say yes?” you looked over at the boy
You rolled your eyes playfully when Wooyoung promised to leave you alone if you came out with the members of Ateez to karaoke. You hadn’t met all the boys yet so you were a bit apprehensive at first but after Wooyoung’s relentless pestering, you finally broke down and agreed.
You and Wooyoung walked into the karaoke room, the loud sounds of singing and yelling coming from the room. Everyone, well almost everyone, were on their feet singing along with the song being played through the speakers. Wooyoung quickly joined in on the fun but you decided to sit with one of the boys- one you didn’t know. You introduced yourself, leaning in close to hear him tell you his name- Jongho. You talked for a bit before the boys were pulling Jongho up and shoving a microphone in his hands. You peeked at the initials on Jongho’s wrist. Your eyes went wide when you saw your initials on his skin. Was it just a coincidence or...

I can, I can't : Part 1 of 3
Pairing: Jaemin x female reader
Gener: best friends to lovers au, smut, fluff
Warning: mentions of sex, masturbation (Female)
Summary: Jaemin and Y/N are part of a group of best friends. One day, things change.....
They called themselves the dropouts. Brought up in good Catholic families, active within the Church community as kids, Catholic school education... the works. They then grew up and stopped going.
It wasn't some group thing were everyone agreed to stop going altogether at the same time. It was more like, one by one, they stopped going.
Jeno was the first to stop, at 15, after his parents got divorced. He became angry and withdrawn. By 16 he was mixing with the wrong crowd - think underaged drinking, partying, It was only after a close brush with the law that he - literally and figuratively - sobered up and decided to focus on healthier pursuits like education and sports. Thankfully too, the old Jeno that everyone knew and love came back.
Then were was Renjun. Renjun was always the one who wasn't really into religion anyway. He was more apt to believing in aliens and ghosts. His mother kept him going for as long as she could. By 18 he was out.
Haechan, as he got older, became a sporadic goer. After moving out on his own to live with the guys and Y/N in an apartment closer to campus, he stopped too.
Y/N? The older she grew, the more she learnt about the importance of gender equality. The more she embraced feminism, the more she found some church teachings hard to swallow.
All was left, of course, was Jaemin. Now Jaemin, he was still a "good boy", faithfully going to Church every Sunday. It wasn't that he was extremely religious. It was more that he had gone to Church every single week all his life. To not go one week felt odd and different.
The good thing was, nobody made fun of him or tried to stop him from going. Jeno even woke him up on Sunday mornings before he went for his 10km runs just so Jaemin would get to mass on time. (Mass is what Catholics call a church service.)
Y/N enjoyed hanging out with her friends. She was like one of the boys. It had always been like that since they were young. Everyone who knew Y/N knew she was not to be messed with. Not only was she capable of kicking anyone's balls, she also had four bros who would come after their ass too. In fact, guys who were interested in dating her would often try to get in good standing with the four guys so life would be easier for them. So it was hardly surprising that Y/N had never had her heart broken.
The problem was, Y/N was the one breaking hearts. Commitment wasn't her strongest suit, and more often than not she'd break off with whoever she was seeing with very trivial reasons, First she was dating Xiaojun. Then 7 months later she broke it off with him because apparently he "sucked at making out". The truth was, Xiaojun was good enough in bed but Y/N wanted to date the more exciting Yang Yang after meeting him at a frat party her gal friends dragged her to and making out with him. So Yang Yang it was. For a while she was happy. But then 10 months passed and Yang Yang was history. Now it seemed, was some guy called Lucas.
"Now, before you guys misunderstand, Lucas is not my boyfriend." Y/N declared over a pizza with Jaemin one Saturday night. "He's just... a friend..."
Jaemin raised his eyebrow. "You mean a friend with benefits? Cos based on what we have to hear every single Friday night, none of us think you guys are friends. Speaking of which.... Jeno wants me to talk to you."
"Let me guess, you lost rock paper scissors. Again. And that's why you're the one speaking to me."
"Well, we have house rules to follow..." Jaemin started, looking somewhat uncomfortable.
"Jeno and his stupid house rules." Y/N sighed. "What now? I can't bring Lucas home?"
"It's getting kind of weird for all of us...."
"You guys bring girls home all the time!" Y/N protested.
"I don't." Jaemin said. It was true.
"Jeno does. Haechan does. Even Renjun! Remember that weird Yoga chick he was seeing?"
"But they're not loud. Lucas sounds like he has a loudhailer in his throat and it's weird hearing him......we end up having to use headphones."
"I've tried asking him to tone it down. But he gets too excited when I blow him..." Y/N grinned as Jaemin covered his ears with his hands, not wanting to hear the details.
"Look, Jeno says he appreciates that YOU have gotten less loud since that time you were dating Yang Yang. But Lucas he's just.... too expressive. Can't you do it at his house or something? It's not the moaning as much as the dirty talk, you know?" Jaemin's voice was getting tinier and tinier.
"If Jeno has a problem, why can't he tell me himself?" I know it's not Haechan or Renjun who are complaining. Haechan's always gaming with his stupid headphones on and Renjun's always listening to music on his noise cancelling ones."
Jaemin sighed. "Don't put me in a tough spot, Y/N..."
He looked at her with puppy dog eyes.
"Fine. I'll speak to Lucas. But I'm only doing it cos of you, cos you good Catholic boy and virgin and all."
Jaemin rolled his eyes. "For the last time, Y/N, I'm not a virgin!"
Lucas took the news surprisingly well and he was happy to have her hang at his apartment instead. Which turned out to be a better thing, since his apartment was bigger and his housemates were never around. Y/N wondered why she insisted on making out at her apartment to begin with.
"I'm surprised Jeno was the one with the problem.." Lucas said after they had made out and she was snuggling in his arms.
"He has all these rules. The worst part is he makes Jaemin speak to me instead of telling me directly."
"It makes sense. You and Jaemin are close."
"I'm close to all four of them."
"No no no." Lucas said, "Each of them has a different thing with you."
"Explain, Mr Wong." she said, looking up at him.
"I think Jeno knows both of you have strong characters so he has Jaemin speak to you instead when there's an issue so you guys won't argue. He prefers to keep things light, so the most you're gonna get is Jeno making fun of you for having a thing for foriegn men."
"What about Haechan?"
"Haechan's your gaming bestie. You talk about gaming, and game together. But he'd kick the ass of anyone who gives you trouble."
"I think I'm least close to Renjun."
"I don't think it's that. It's more Renjun is kind of in his own world. He's like that with everyone. But he feels close to you guys."
Y/N was impressed.
"What about Jaemin?"
"Jaemin's like your total opposite. But you guys get each other. I like him. He's a good guy."
"Yeah he's a virgin." Y/N joked.
"He's a good looking guy! Heck, if I was a chick I'd go after him man!" Lucas said, his eyes expressive as always.
"Well, he's a good guy. I've never seen him bring a girl home."
"Come on man, when it comes to hormones, even good guys turn bad."
Lucas was driving her home when she got a call from Jaemin.
"Wassup?"
"Are you alone?" Jaemin asked. He sounded strange. "I need help."
"Are you ok?" Y/N asked. "I'm with Lucas. Where are you?"
"Oh. I'll call someone else..."
"Don't be an idiot, Jaemin. Where are you?"
"Hospital." he said. "Can you come? Just don't tell anyone anything. Not even Lucas."
She found him in a bad state at the hospital. Sitting in a daze, blood stains on his crumpled shirt. Y/N had never seen Jaemin look so small.
"Hey" she half whispered. He looked up.
"I can go now. I got an x-ray done. My nose is not broken. And it's finally stopped bleeding." he said. "I already collected my medicines. Mostly painkillers."
"What happened?" she asked.
"I don't want to talk about it." he said.
"Let's get home and get you out of these bloody clothes. And then you can tell me after you've had a good night's sleep."
"Can i sleep in your room tonight?" he asked. It was an unsual request. "I'm feeling quite shaken."
"Yeah. Sure. Let's do that."
It was 2am and he still couldn't sleep. She could feel him toss and turn next to her.
"Jae."
"Sorry."
"No, I can't sleep either."
He sat up.
"I need to get my ID card back. Can you follow me tomorrow?"
"Your ID card?"
"I was fooling around with a first year chick in her house. Her parents came back and caught us. Her dad took my ID away, said he was going to lodge a police report against me for tresspassing his house and taking advantage of his daughter. Well, that's after he beat me up."
Y/N sat up. This was interesting, she thought.
"She's 18?" she asked.
"Yeah."
"18 is legal you dumbass." she slapped her forehead.
"I thought it was 21.."
Y/N groaned. "I can't believe you're so stupid."
"But the trespassing thing?"
"They don't have a case Jae. I'm sure you can prove you were invited there. Even if she lies and said she didn't invite you. They can't prove it beyond a reasonable doubt."
"I'm so glad you're studying law."
"And Jaemin?"
"What?"
"It's illegal for him to detain your ID. YOU can report him."
"Oh. I didn't know that."
"Can you go sleep now that you know you're not actually in trouble?"
"Yes. Thanks Y/N." he said, turning to face the opposite side.
But Y/N couldn't sleep. Her mind was running a million miles a minute. Jaemin made out with someone. What was he like when making out? Was he gentle? Was he sweet like he always was to everyone? Was he a dom or sub? What did he do with the girl? Did he have fun?
Her own thoughts made her sick. Feeling a stir in her stomach made her sick. This was her best friend she was thinking of. She had to stop. Maybe she needed a shower.
Taking a towel with her to the bathroom, she shut the door, stripping quickly and getting under the hot jets of water. Damn it, Y/N, she scolded herself. Not Na Jaemin. What happened to your thing for Chinese guys?
She soaped herself trying to escape the mental picture of Jaemin, between the girl's thighs, lapping on her clit mercilessly, his eyes twinkling like they would whenever Jeno or Haechan said something witty. Suddenly, she was thinking of him between her legs, lapping at her core.
She brought her fingers to her clit, rubbing them from side to side. She leaned against the bathroom wall, moving more aggressively. She was wet. Biting her lip she pushed two fingers into her pussy, thrusting them in and out, the sound of the shower masking the wet noises as her fingers moved.
The muscles in her stomach were tightening. She could no longer hold back, thinking of Jaemin thrusting into her, looking at her with an intense gaze. She wanted him bad.
Slowly she came undone, as she moaned into her hands while cumming.
Suddenly, someone was knocking aggressively on the bathroom door. Y/N froze.
"I need to pee!" Haechan shrieked. "Hurry! I need to go back to my game!"
"Give me 2 minutes I'll be done." Y/N said, drying herself with her towel and getting dressed, mind still dazed from thinking about Jaemin. She knew their friendship was never going to be the same ever again.
She was just wondering how easy or hard it was going to be, to get Jaemin to join her on the other side.

[01:44] Donghyuck had to be messed up to want this certain kind of love: he wanted to feel like a brittle autumn leaf being crushed under the soles of someone's shoes, broken without being paid mind to. He wanted to find someone and be hopelessly in love with them. Then, he want them to find happiness in a way that would crush his heart like a child would chew on ice on a hot summer day.
He wants to hold unlovable hands, feel the familiarity of it because he has identical ones. He wants to swallow and taste bile when they kiss. He wants to be asphyxiated. He wants someone kind enough to strangle him in his sleep.
But even if messed up, he had a reason to be: it was the only kind he knew, the one he's most comfortable with. He was a smart boy and didn't want to know there's still some things left to the world for him to figure out. He knows it all already. If his parents taught him anything other than muting the sounds of fighting and keeping his head down low, it was this: hope only brings misery and expectations heartbreak.
But he didn't know fate.
One day it introduces itself to him, having him collide with a force that shouldn't have existed in this world. He peered up from his daydream and the loud tune of music from his headphones muffles out. It's just his heartbeat, and the constant threat that his heart might be moving out of his body through his throat.
It was the end of him, whatever it was that force was. Could've been a truck or a car or a heart attack. Except it didn't hurt, the one thing in his life that didn't try to harm him. The scent of flowers invaded his senses and butterflies fluttered in his stomach. The taste in his mouth was the same that coated it the first time he tasted cotton candy; melting on his tongue and making his teeth ache with how sweet it had been.
"I'm sorry! It's just— ah, I lost it," you had sighed.
"What is 'it' exactly, if you don't mind me asking?" It came out rougher and annoyed than he expected it to, but you didn't seem to mind. At least, you didn't seem offended.
You blushed, "I... tried petting a cat. It was really cute. But. But I lost it."
Donghyuck was too mesmerized — by the utter stupidity of the situation or your unbelievable beauty — that he completely ignored the fact that he didn't see one cat the time he spent observing the cracks on the pavement.
For some reason you became friends, friends for a very long time. Still, he'd rather preferred the truck, a car, or the soul crushing heartbreak, over whatever he got.
("There was no cat," you confess a little time later, when months had passed and you can comfortably laugh at Donghyuck without being afraid he'd cut you with a glare.
Halfway through finishing his pudding cup, he looks at you with an unamused glance, a silent cue for you to explain yourself. You bring a hand up your nape and had the audacity to sheepishly chuckle,
"I just... well, we walk the same way to the same school, spend hours sitting in the same classroom... I guess... uh. It's not that hard to notice you, you know?"
"You're creepy."
"C'mon, I wanted to be friends with you!"
"Why?"
"Cause you were alone."
Donghyuck looks up seriously. Your sheepish smile fades into a soothing one.
"I didn't want you to be lonely."
"I wasn't lonely, I just liked my own company."
That was true, but also not. It was lonely, he just didn't want to admit. He wanted to reach out and feel human. He wanted to try and fit in this world, even just for once. It was lonely, but nobody wanted to be by his side, because he wasn't worth knowing beyond the glare and silence he wore, as it is the only things he knew how to express. It was lonely.
"Hmph! If all I know, you were miserable!" You jokingly said.
But when he has you here, beside him, willing to look past that, why would he ever let you slide through his fingertips because loneliness was safe and happiness was scary?
"Pay for it," he plays disinterested. "You'll have to be by my side forever now that you showed me how miserable it was being alone."
He'd resort to this, this despair. He smiles alluringly.)
He didn't know what to call it, whatever it was that you had. Neither did he know how to describe it, or anything about it at all, except for a few words: it was soft and sweet and giddy. He liked it. It felt vulnerable and childish and good.
"Forever is a long time," you had grinned. "But if you choose to spend it with me, I'll make it worth-while."
Donghyuck grins.
The night sky looks enchanting tonight, but they lack luster. Ever since he grew up, ever since that time passed, they never really shined as bright as they did when he was younger.
"The sun is a star too, but no matter how big and bright and warm it was, I think more people loved the night sky more than they did the very first seeps of daylight that spilled through the seams of the Earth."
That has to be right. The earth was warmed and kept alive by sunlight, but even that wasn't enough. Or maybe it was, it was just looked past to because of more beautiful things. Because starlight burned sweeter than sunlight did, and if his love scorched as bad as the Sun, he doesn't think he can blame anyone but himself that people left.
He swallows.
In another life, he'd be the moon. The sky would be the mystical purple you so loved, and every time he'd miss you, he'd look up — not to imply that he would have to miss you. He wouldn't. In that other life flowers flew around and butterflies grew, and trees bloomed cotton candy instead of leaves. Cats didn't run away.
In another life, he didn't break countless hearts for you. He didn't break his heart for you. He didn't mold himself to fit the hands of someone who never made an effort to touch him in a way so gentle he wouldn't break.
And in another life, things would've worked out.
In another life, he wouldn't be dreaming of another life because he would be content with the one he's living in, one he'll spend with you.

A Cure for Insomnia CH 1.
This is a reader insert I originally started posting on AO3. I’m cross posting here because I know some of the fandom still lives here.
Quick Disclaimer:
This is a fic I'm writing for my own comfort.
I was inspired by RaeBees (you can check out their works over on Quotev and AO3), and how they characterize the "proxies". Having always seen the characters different than most of the fandom I've interacted with I never really shared my thoughts until now. This work is only placed in the Creepypasta tag so it reaches its demographic. However, I am fully aware of the fact that no main character is considered a Pasta.
It may also appear to lean more Toby X Protag in the beginning but end goal is protag with all three, and Brian and Tim already in a relationship. How I picture it now is a slowburn but Toby and Protag will be in a friends with benefits relationship before either has any feelings, so I think that counts. Some may be confused by the asexual protag tag but it'll be explained in story, as an Ace myself I get frustrated with media that only show one version and say it goes for us all. That being said I don't represent the whole Ace community but I hope to provide a bit more representation for some others out there.
Protag will be depicted as agender, and will have a few tics that stem from their Autism. Again I don't speak for any others with Autism but I hope to provide some representation for those in similar positions.
Tags will be updated as the story progresses. Canon-Typical violence and mental health issues are to be expected if you feel uncomfortable with those aspects I advise you to not engage. This story will also have a lot of NSFW themes and scenes so I highly discourage anyone under the age of 18 from viewing this work. You will get warnings on chapters with NSFW and I will make it skippable as well.
I'm also very nitpicky and gave the main characters birthdays just because it irritates me when it gets mentioned once and you have to do the math or imagine your own conversation when a birthday was too close to a character's.
Tim January 1st, home state Alabama
Toby April 28th, home state Virginia (saw this years ago no clue if it's accurate)
Protag May 13th, home state Virginia
Brian May 23rd, home state Alabama
Connor the service dog July 18th, home state Kentucky
I've referred to Protag as Protag here but in story they're referred to as YN.
Everything felt impossibly dull; your senses, the dark room you're currently in, the noise coming from the fan just to the left of the bed on which you laid. Turning to the window beside your head you stare out into that weird midnight summer sky. More of a gray than a true dark blue night, cast in an orange glow that made the night seem closer to day than it truly was. While the time was just half past twelve, you felt it may have been more accurate to say it was closer to four in the morning.
You're exhausted but that true sort of exhaustion where whatever energy you have left buzzes all around. It consumes your entire being, dances between being deafeningly loud in your ears to giving you twitches in your legs. You'd laid down hours ago thinking you'd be tired enough to sleep once your tics started to spasm in closer intervals, but to no avail were you able to rest. That buzzing preventing you from dreamland. Maybe the hum of your body was right, you didn't really need to sleep, you just wanted it to feel normal.
Knowing the battle had already been lost you push yourself off the bed and grab a pair of shorts off the floor. Slipping them on you contemplate your options for the night. Going into town was out since it was Sunday...well Monday now, but there would be nothing but bars open and you were never one for drinking. And as fun as a drive sounds right now, you feel the buzzing in your bones grow stronger, you need to move. A late night hike should keep you occupied, with it being so quiet and the middle of the night you wouldn't even have to take your headphones to cancel out the sounds of other people, you aren't likely to run into many people tonight.
Deciding on a hike you grab a mask and car keys and make your way to your yellow Kia Soul. A going away present from your parents that they gave you the moment you got your driver's license after your 24th birthday. Having anxiety throughout your life you'd never been in the head space to start driving till later on, and while you still don't enjoy driving you are pretty good at it even with your “late” start. Surfing through radio stations as you let the car warm up you find your latest obsession, it's a conspiracy theory podcast that someone in Kepler managed to blast through the limited air ways of the town. Impressive considering Kepler was in a radio quiet zone and even cell phones couldn't work in the small town, luckily you lived just outside of the zone so you could send texts and call your parents every weekend.
It seemed today's episode was a rerun, Mothman: Murderer, Man, or Myth. It was actually one of your favorites, the paranormal stories tended to be more entertaining than hearing about how a man could murder sixteen people while working as a cop ruining evidence to lead the others off his trail. Humans could be more vial and cruel than any little gray alien from the future or tall Fresno Nightcrawler could ever be. And they weren't as entertaining to hear about, nor were their exploits as impressive. You could always see patterns, either connecting clues first or finding connections no one else saw, it was never hard to tell where a certain case would lead so you'd always end up disappointed in humanity when they overlooked such obvious clues. Though that often led you down a path of deep diving for information to see just how obvious it was, more often than not you'd find that the most logical conclusion was shady public officers. After investigating so many cold cases you're sure if you're ever in trouble you'll never involve the police, in the end they'd probably just ignore you and rule your case closed if anything ever did happen to you.
'I'd haunt them if they did.' You decide and you shift gears and begin driving to the Monongahela National Forest, as the timeline of Mothman sightings and events play out before for your ears.
Instead of going through town and possibly loosing the signal of the show, you drive on the old dirt road that runs along the very edge of the town, partially covered in trees. This over grown road is the main reason Kepler doesn't see many visitors, the second someone makes their way onto it coming off the interstate they floor it until they see civilization. Over the few months you've been here you've nearly been run right off the road by spooked tourists, trying to escape whatever ghouls their wild imaginations created. The only real thing on this road was a mini mart gas station, and even though it was shady as hell the cashier didn't bug you too much when you came in in the dead of night. Plus they had a cat, how could you not stop in and say hi to little ole Magnolia?
Speaking of which you should probably get a drink for your hike, you could already feel your throat drying out. Turning into the parking lot you're happy to see no other cars around, putting your face mask on you make your way inside. As usual the store is dead at this time, and Ronnie is manning the desk. What's unusual is the man also behind the counter, he has dark brown hair that he's tied into a small and low ponytail, thick sideburns frame his face. You immediately take note of the slight imperfections of his face, most would see the slit in his eyebrow as following the current trend or even just a genetic thing, but you can see the slightly off color of a healed scar that starts just above his eyebrow and ends mid eyelid, he has a few smaller discolorations on his crooked nose, you'd guess he's had it broken at least twice.
Briefly taking a glance to his brown eyes before looking away, today is not an eye contact day. Nodding in their directions, the best acknowledgment you can give right now, you make your way to the freezers. From the freezer section you can hear Ronnie “explain” you.
“That's YN, a regular mainly at night though. A bit skittish and rarely ever says more than 'thanks have a nice day'” Even though she's whispering you can hear everything. Including the high octave her voice takes to mimic you, it feels more like mocking.
If being mocked hadn't already put you on edge the eyes boring into you have. The eyes may not be roaming over your body but the icky crawling of your skin sure makes it feel that way. The feeling of being put under a microscope has always made you sick, the stares, the leers and sneers, and the judgment just makes you want to implode on the spot. Cease existence, be swallowed into the abyss. You're about to set yourself into an anxiety attack with all these thoughts.
'Mask, mask, mask' you repeat over and over in your head, it's the only thing you can focus on. You are wearing a mask, there is one thing they can't perceive, the face is the most important for humans to perceive, your mask protects you.
Without looking you pull a water bottle from the cooler. You don't think you like this brand but the sports mouth makes up for it, and you can't focus enough to grab another. As the imaginary spiders crawl their way under your skin and your breath hitches you make your way over to the counter head down, never looking up at the employees beyond the counter. Your vision is blurring in time with the beating of your heart, you can't tell if it's due to nerves or from being up for five days in a row.
“Hey YN, how're you?” Ronnie asks, her tone is different from the past times you've been in. It's higher and has a lilt in it that you'd expect from a teasing friend. But Ronnie isn't a friend and has never spoken to you like this, you hate it. You nod to politely move on with the process, between the crawling of your skin and the buzzing underneath it you feel sick. And you're now very aware of the existence of your eyelids, you try to focus on ignoring that awareness. You need to move.
“Hmm, that's good. Anyway this is Tim! He's just started so go easy on him.” you hear the sound of a hand hitting fabric and assume she's patted Tim's shoulder as she introduced Tim to you. Why was she doing this, what purpose could introducing you two have? You nod again, was anyone going to ring you out?
“Hi, this all?” a deep voice asked, it isn't extremely deep more of a standard baritone that has a slight raspy quality, probably a reformed smoker. You don't smell cigarettes currently so he could've quit after years. Unfortunately despite your efforts to stave them off your blinking tics emerge. Making it difficult to keep your eyes open for longer than a nano second.
Startled and ticcing you look up and catch his eyes, you see pity in them, before casting your glance back to the counter. You can never tell what's worse people seeing you as weird or seeing you as something needing to be fixed. Nodding again, Tim tells you the total; a dollar fifty eight, and you hand him two dollars from your wallet.
Tim doesn't ask if you want the receipt or a bag, he prints out the receipt and hands you your change. The change goes immediately into the cat food fund for Magnolia. She got diagnosed with diabetes about a month ago and having worked in shelters and pet stores you know just how expensive her prescription food is. After folding the receipt into your wallet, Tim gently slides the water bottle over to you.
“Have a good night.” he says it so low and gentle, as if he thinks you'll shatter in front of him. As kind as the gesture seems, you aren't that fragile...or maybe you are if you have to keep repeating 'mask' over and over in your head to ground yourself. With a final nod you turn and make your way to the door, and just as you open it you hear Ronnie call out.
“Awwww, c'mon YN at least say 'Hi' to Tim.” You really don't like how she squeaked out 'hi'.
Taking a deep breath you prepare yourself, you'll show them both you can do this simple task. Even if you can't stop blinking long enough to see straight. Once you've steadied yourself you turn and look at Tim. He's sending you a look that says 'You don't have to' all that's missing is a slow head shake to complete his unease with this “peer pressure”.
But you can do this you can say 'Hi, Tim.' Two words super simple, nothing complex like 'Hi, Tim, nice to meet you.' and so much better than the option of your next meeting saying 'Hi, Tim. Sorry for spazzing out the other night.'. Yup you can do this just breathe, you open your mouth and...and you've forgotten what to say. Looking like a deer in headlights, well at least the tics stopped, you say the first thing that pops in.
“Mask.” You've said it loud and clear both cashiers heard you.
Tim stares with wide eyes and you see Ronnie failing to hide her laughter. Out of all the ways this could've gone this was probably the best outcome for her. The blinking has started up again, this time growing more frequent. You can't even hold your eyes open, to the two cashiers it must look like you're in pain or crying. And while you want to die of embarrassment, crying is a bit of an extreme for you.
So with red face and the inability to see you leave through the door, and try to make your way back to your car. Once in you lock the doors, switch the car on, and rest your head on the steering wheel. Out of every way this stop could've gone, being perceived by a new comer and Ronnie was not what you expected. While this hadn't been the worst five minutes or so of your life, it definitely would be another thing keeping you up at night for the next twenty years.
Calming down in the cool quiet dark of your car your slowly brought back to the world by the beginning of a new episode. This one talking about the Tailypo legend. A favorite story of yours from when you were a kid living on the coast of Virginia. So with yet another deep breath and the wave of nostalgia, you pull out of the parking lot and slowly coast down the old dirt road. Heading yet again for the Monongahela forest.
It's nearly two in the morning when you roll up to see an RV parked by the forgotten entrance of the park. It isn't surprising at all to find an RV out here since the Monongahela Forest is one of the most beautiful parks you've ever been to. You also don't think anything of them being parked by this unused entrance because you use it all the time since finding it accidentally. Figuring they just wanted to camp and be left to their own devices rather than use the RV sites and be bothered with other campers here for the summer.
Climbing out of your car you notice the RV isn't new by any means but it isn't a total rust bucket either, looks like it's been passed around throughout the years. There isn't anything to suggest it's been here a while, nothing left set up outside, must have just gotten into town then. You do happen to notice dog tracks around the sandy dirt you've parked in, good to know they have a dog before you slammed your car door. Closing the door gently behind you so you don't startle a pup and wake up it's owner or owners, you make your way through the woods. No real direction in mind, with no real thought in your head. Just the thought of moving and to keep on moving.
You could walk the same path every time you came through and always find something different. In fact that's exactly what happens, you're almost positive that you've deepened the imprint of the path just from walking through several times a week. Following the same winding path you usually do, climbing over the fallen tree, and through a scattering of blueberry thicket's you find yourself on the edge of one of the forest's many streams. It's your favorite spot in the forest so far, and about as far as you've gotten considering these hikes of yours take place during the dead of night.
The wind picks up and sends a chill through you, taking that as a sign you slide down to sit by the stream. Vans placed to your side as you sink your feet into the cool water. It's peaceful out here, so cool, and quiet, save for the slight noises the stream makes, various bubbling and drips. You try to think on things like your recent move, your job, the embarrassing 'mask' incident, just life in general. But you can't seem to form a single thought, this happens a lot, you've recently been conscious of the fact that you've been running on auto pilot for the past two months, hell a lot longer than that. You think everyone must get like this from time to time, but you think you've always been this way. Keen to dissociating and slipping in and out of existence.
It's quite nice really, except for the times like right now where you'd love to figure out why the silence in your head is so painfully loud. The more you think on it the louder it gets and the stronger the buzzing under your skin feels. And right now the static in your mind has been getting louder and louder for the past few minutes. You feel your head jerk to the right of it's own accord, moving back in place it happens for a second time, and then a third, then jerks up, before jerking a forth time to the right effectively cracking you neck.
“There we go.” you mumble, you can relax a bit as the verbal tic indicates the end of this round of tics.
Sighing you look at the sky...that can't be right. The sky has been painted it's fresh baby blues for the day, but again that can't be right. You just got to the stream, that path is a thirty minute walk meaning it should be just about two thirty in the morning, but the sky suggests it's five or six at the latest. Reaching for your water bottle you find it empty next to you. You didn't fall asleep you know that much, perhaps you did dissociate tonight. Well this hike was disappointing if you knew you were going to dissociate you'd have saved yourself that embarrassment and stayed home. Maybe done some painting or tidied up.
Sighing you push yourself off the ground, collecting you vans you're about to put them on when you notice a figure off in the distance. You freeze out of shock and stare at the figure, it stares back. The figure is about ten yards away, god your near sighted ass should really remember to not leave your glasses in the car when hiking. The figure starts to make it's way to you and after a few steps you realize it hasn't moved from it's spot. Rolling your eyes you ignore the hallucination.
You'd really needed to get sleep last night, today is day six of no sleep and though you haven't had many episodes these past few days, you have a feeling they'll start to get more prominent today. Hopefully tonight you can manage to get some rest, the longer you go without sleep the more realistic the hallucinations become. But for today you're content with the knowledge that it's just shadow like beings that you'll be seeing.
After putting on your shoes you start the thirty minute hike back to your car. You're thankful for the weather in Kepler, nothing like back on the coast. Here you can go for a morning hike through the forest while a gentle breeze passes by and the sun starts to give the area a pleasant warmth. Back on the coast you couldn't run and grab the mail without getting drenched in moisture from either sweat, humidity, or a mixture of both.  The coast sucks, hell Virginia sucks altogether, you're glad to be in Kepler.
“I want to go home, home.” you say out of nowhere.
Before you reach the entrance you hear barking, oh the RV campers must be up. Should you be careful not to scare them, or just walk normally and say 'Good morning' in passing, maybe just nod your head in greeting. Oh and you've stopped just beside the entrance as you got lost in your rambling. You didn't mean to come to a stop here, and as you try to move you notice how silent it's gotten. Did the dog go inside, maybe they've already passed...no it's too quiet for that. No the silence is oppressive like the one you deal with nightly, there's a reason for the silence. The situation's making you feel uneasy, but that could be the sleep deprivation talking.
You're about to brush it off and move when you hear a whispered, “Seriously man, I don't think anyone's out there. Let's get inside.”
There's a noise of agreement before you hear shuffling. Oh no, you zoned out and now you look like a weirdo stalker. Just perfect, maybe if you wait around a little more you'll seem more normal or at least feel normal. Not knowing how long to wait you walk along the tree line for a bit, looking at the ground as you do making sure you won't step on any snakes. In you quest to not step on any snakes you spot something suspiciously off white. It seems purposefully buried under a dead blueberry bush and some fallen branches.
Having listened to too many true crime shows, you know better than to implicate yourself in a murder. Grabbing a stick off the ground you gently brush the foliage away from the supposed corpse. No way, you can't believe your luck, it's an actual fucking skull. An intact skull of a deer! That is so cool, you've only seen taxidermists on TikTok getting so lucky and finding these dudes. Since the jaw bone is connected by tissue it of course isn't with the skull but maybe it's close by? Clearly this got planted or hidden by someone, maybe they were planning on pranking a friend by 'uncovering' a skull later. Oh well, finders keepers and all that, you have way better plans for this guy, hopefully you can find that jaw bone.
You set off searching through the foliage and near by bushes with the branch while holding the skull in your other arm. After searching about three feet around and finding no more bones you decide that this is the only part of the deer's skeleton in this area. A little disappointed but still thrilled with your find, you decide it must be a good time to go back to your car.
Surely you won't look weird now. You a little forager with their treasure in hand. Looks like you'll be busy cleaning, then bleaching, and cleaning these bones today. Is that the order to treat found bones? You aren't sure but you can look into that later. Placing the skull in the trunk so it doesn't roll about and get damaged you make sure it's secure before closing the trunk and getting into your car and locking the doors.
Not once did you notice the pairs of eyes that had been watching you. One watching as you found the deer skull, and the other set seeing you place bones into your car. They kept watching as you fiddled with the radio while the car was starting up. They watched as you pulled out of the sandy dirt lot and drove back down the old road a little faster than before now that you could clearly see.

the fairytale she never had (will you believe again?)
when sol is invited to a wedding, sol doesn’t think her best friend would follow her.
aka: solhwi attending a wedding
notes: it just struck me one day, and i really wanted them to see each other outside of the law school moments! while law school defines them, they are certainly people with social activities.
i adapted this from a similar prompt i saw from a fic many years ago for a separate fandom, and i always wanted to write something similar. this was honestly not met to be multi-part, but i write too much anyways. so multi-part it will be.
also, it might sound depressing in the initial part where sol is talking about the wedding invitation, but it gets explained later on.
as always, enjoy! any grammar mistakes and all will be taken fully responsible by me!

I: 我愿变成童话里, 你爱的那个天使 (i am willing to be the angel of that fairytale you love)
--title inspired by fairytale (童话) by Michael Wong!--
Sol absolutely hates weddings.
She hated the big social crowds, the way drunk men in tuxedos staggered around with women in one arm and a drink in another. She found no purpose in dressing in lavish gowns, then eating dinner for the next two hours without even feeling full.
Sol couldn’t blame anyone but herself for this. She can’t help but remember her mother’s failed marriages. The way her biological father left them in the middle of the night, with all their hard earned savings. The way her stepfather, Byeol’s father, would come home drunk and violent towards her mother. It was a memory she couldn’t erase. More than a decade later, she still wakes up in a cold sweat, worrying for her mother and small Byeol’s life.
She long ago gave up on the concept of love back then. She wasn’t opposed to anyone dating or talking about it, and she certainly didn’t mind short flings. But marriage? Eternal love? The fairytale that everyone hopes to achieve? Sol threw those ideas out of the window.
So when Sol received a thick, cream-coloured card and envelope, embossed with rose gold foil and flowers, a pretty silver wax seal and her name written in careful strokes of a calligraphy brush, she was stumped.
Her friend, Im Jiyoon, was getting married. Jiyoon was a good friend of Sol’s, and they occasionally met up for quick meals. Jiyoon was an accountant and climbing the ranks in her company. They lost contact for a period when Sol was in juvie, but they reconnected when Sol was just starting law school. It was only polite that Jiyoon extended invitations to her high school classmate.
Sol had mixed feelings. The wedding was on a Friday night, which made things good since she didn’t have to wake up early, fitting her schedule properly. But she had nothing to wear. She could borrow a dress and shoes from Yeseul, but the last time she borrowed a shoe from Yeseul, she almost broke her ankle. And she had so much work to catch up on. Yet, not showing up felt rude of her.
Jiyoon was nice, don’t get her wrong. She was smart, resourceful and lovely to be with in high school. Sol wanted nothing more than for her high school friend to marry the love of her life. But she hasn't been to such social events in years, and being so focussed on school, the legal clinic and contributing to her family, she found it difficult to understand why she needed to go, besides doing it out of courtesy.
“What’s that?” A familiar voice pipes from behind, drawing her out of her thoughts. There’s the familiar shuffling of several pairs of feet as Sol turns her attention to the one who spoke. Behind her, was Han Joon Hwi with his bag just being set on the table. The rest of the group was just settling in for another study session.
“Ah, nothing important.” She monotonously says before sliding the card in her files. Joon Hwi’s hands catch the card before she can slide it fully and stop her from hiding it from him, or the rest of the group. The rest draw their attention to the expensive card and Sol only stays silent.
“A wedding? Your friend’s?” Yeseul asks as she picks the card up with perfectly manicured fingers. Turning and feeling the thick paper between her fingers, Yeseul knew it was no cheap manufactured paper. This was expensive, premium, and each card looked handmade from the brush calligraphy.
“Yeah. But I don’t think I’m going.” Sol says as Yeseul returns her the card and successfully stores it away in her bag.
“Why not? Don’t you want to be there?” Joon Hwi asks, cocking his head to the side in utter confusion.
“There isn’t much point, is there? I have school and the legal clinic and things to revise for. And besides, I don't have anything to attend in. I just rather send her a gift and treat her a meal.” Sol simply explains. Everyone bombards her with more questions, but she diverts their attention to her paper and the cases they are reviewing today.
Joon Hwi, however, couldn’t get Sol’s reasoning out of his head. He knew Sol well enough to know how much she values her friends, and that she would be willing to drop everything for a friend. Her loyalty was unmatched. It didn’t make sense that she would be held back by her vanity or school work that caused her to not attend such a joyous occasion.
When everyone is done reviewing the cases and the session ends, Sol is the only one who has her books and papers still scattered all over the table. She still has to review her notes and catch up on a few lectures before she can officially end her day. Joon Hwi was long done, but he stayed put, bringing out a past report he’s done and glancing through it, hopeful to catch any mistakes. The others have headed back or gone to the cafeteria for a meal.
“Han Joon Hwi, you don’t have to stay for me, you know?” Sol says, her eyes not once looking up as she stays concentrated highlighting her book with a fluorescent orange highlight. She sticks it in her hair when she’s done, raising her head to meet Joon Hwi’s eyes. Joon Hwi only smiles, letting his eyes crinkle.
“Why don’t you want to attend the wedding?” Joon Hwi asks, still smiling. Sol scoffs.
“I already said. I’m too busy-” Sol is cut off by Joon Hwi with his teasing.
“You sure? I think it’s about the groom, though.” Joon Hwi smiles brightly, earning an irritated series of clicks of her tongue from Sol, clearly successful in being teased.
“None of that sort! Who do you think I am, Han Joon Hwi?” Sol rebuts back, throwing her eraser across to him in annoyance.
Joon Hwi catches it with a laugh, but doesn’t lose eye contact with Sol. A few moments of silence follow, as she looks at the file with the card. Slowly, she draws the card from her file, holding it carefully between her fingers.
“It’s not that I don’t want to be there. I… it’s my first time going to such a social event in such a long time. And the last time I met Jiyoon was a year ago, back in our 1L.” She says softly, letting her fingers brush her calligraphed name.
“I just… rather not go, you know? Treat her to a nice meal somewhere, maybe a couple drinks. Besides, I’m sure she’s just doing it out of courtesy.” She lets out a light laugh.
Joon Hwi’s heart softens. He’s witnessed Sol in her different elements. The courtroom, where she’s a powerful woman in command, dressed professionally in a suit and hair in a perfect ponytail. The day-to-day her, where she’s comfortably dressed in jeans and her tanned coat, hair in a bun and post it notes on her jacket. She was always so bold, so confident and so full of fire. It never occurred to him that she would be uncomfortable in social events. She was always the life during dinners, with Bokgi. She laughed loudly, engaged in conversations and seemed so comfortable. He remembers how she would help out the old halmeonis with her neighbourhood on some days when he sent her home, or the times she bought ice creams for Byeol’s classmates. She seemed so extroverted, yet so closed off. Eying her, Joon Hwi reaches out and clasps his hand over hers in an attempt to comfort.
“I never went to school events, you know? Especially since juvie made me miss it. When I redid my high school year, I didn’t go too. There wasn’t much of a point, since I didn’t have a date or many friends to begin with. If it was Dan, she would have gone, being the popular girl she was back then.” Sol softly says, a small smile ghosting her face.
She remembers the day prom arrived for her school. She was expectant, hoping that the boy she liked would invite her. Or maybe the girls that she occasionally had lunch with will invite her to hang out. But all she got was a stone cold silence the weeks leading up to prom. When everyone buzzed on what they were wearing to prom night, she silently put on her headphones, drilling herself into her science assignments. Of course, she wouldn’t be invited.
She knew the rumours floating in school. How Dan was the perfect one, how she was the failed one. She knew everyone knew she went to juvie. She knows how the boys snicker at her when she walks past them, or how the girls gossip and whisper when she’s eating her lunch. Besides, it didn't help that she was poor. She can’t even afford a dress of her own, let alone go to the event.
Realising what she’s said, Sol quickly draws her hand away along with the card and slots it away in her file.
“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to blabber on. You must think it’s stupid, I think so too. Anyways, do you have the notes Professor Kim...” Sol quickly apologises and diverts her attention to her notes. But Joon Hwi was no longer listening. He was shattered by how the woman sitting in front of him has never been treated like how she should be treated. It was no secret to Joon Hwi that he cared for his friends, but cared a little more for Sol. He was the one that left post-it notes on her table and pretended he didn't. She was the only one that he would let steal a mouth or two from his ramyeon. He could read her moods just from her eyes. He wonders sometimes, if he sees her more than a friend.
He won’t hide that she’s beautiful. The way her eyes slant in an elegant fashion, her smooth, slightly tanned skin, and her winning smile that he always found his heart beating faster for. He loves the way she smiles at her extra pickles, the way her eyes light up when she sees Byeol, or the way she argues and practices. The tenacity and desire she has to improve inspires him to work as hard as her.
This is why when Sol spilled the beans, he couldn't help but feel all sorts of emotions. Anger, towards the people in her school, for not realising such a wonderful student. Anger towards her for degrading herself. Sadness, for her not being able to experience such events.
As Joon Hwi ended the session with her and returned to his room, he made a promise to Sol. He’s convinced it will work, and he begins planning in his head.
He will show her the fairytale.
-----
A week passed.
Sol had to give a reply in a few days and she has not figured out what to say. The wedding was in a month. She knew Jiyoon would be busy... Sol figures that she should just treat Jiyoon after her honeymoon, knowing how she would be away with her husband as newlyweds later on.
“Still thinking about the wedding?” Joon Hwi nods at her, her head in her hands. Sol, looking defeated, nods. So much for trying to hide. They were at their pantry area of their dorms, Sol stirring her ramyeon, as Joon Hwi slurps his. It was 3am, and they just finished studying. The next day was a weekend, so it didn’t really matter if they slept late, since they got the privilege of sleeping in.
“What do I tell Jiyoon? I don’t want to sound rude.” Sol mumbles, lazily stirring her soggy noodles.
“Go to the wedding.” Joon Hwi says suddenly, continuously slurping.
“What?!”
“Sol, how many weddings can you even go to in your life? Are you sure you want to miss this one? Besides, you said you haven’t been to social events. Don’t you want to experience it?” Joon Hwi says, adrenaline building in his voice.
Sol falls silent. She can’t deny that she wants to experience the feeling of being dolled up, the fun that everyone talks about, and the enjoyment that everyone goes through. And Joon Hwi is right; she wants to celebrate with Jiyoon. But her fear of social events and the past was holding her back.
Joon Hwi could tell the change in her eyes. He gives a sweet smile, knowing that he said enough to change her mind.
“Joon Hwi, but what if she doesn’t even-” Sol begins doubting herself as she shoots off her doubts and worries. Joon Hwi calms her down with logical reasons, calming her nerves in between his mouths of ramyeon.
“But... I’ll be alone there, right?” Sol asks, her voice so soft, Joon Hwi barely picks it up. Her ramyeon is still untouched, and the noodles have gotten soggy and cold. Sol is silent for a moment, as she realises how right she is, for once. It wasn’t like she could ask a date, she doesn’t even have one. And her friends from the study group were out of the question. They don’t even know Jiyoon. Joon Hwi quickly brings up his bowl to his face, hopefully covering it as he feels the heat rising to his face.
“I’ll be your plus-one.”
Sol’s eyes light up and her head rises. Did she hear that right? Han Joon Hwi, her plus-one?
“Oh, no! No, I didn’t mean it like that! Joon Hwi, no, I can’t-” Sol can’t find the right words to say. He can't? He shouldn’t? He doesn't need to? Sol can’t deduce her own reasonings for this argument. She knows her roommate likes him, and she definitely doesn’t want to be the target of her roommate’s stares if she catches wind of this. Besides, Joon Hwi doesn’t like her. She knows, and she doesn’t want him to get any wrong ideas. He’s her best friend, and confidante. She knows, deep down, his heart is someone else's.
“I want to.”
Sol freezes as Joon Hwi finishes drinking his soup. Placing the bowl down, he does as best as he can to lock eyes with Sol seriously, showing her he wasn’t teasing. No, this was out of his sincere heart. He knows how nervous she gets in a new environment, and him being next to her was bound to calm her nerves just a little more.
Sol could see the genuine care and want in his eyes. She knows this isn’t one of his jokes or teases. For a split second, she catches herself thinking if he meant something more. That going as a date, was more than just keeping her company, but for something to develop…
Her face is flushed red as she looks at her puffed noodles and lukewarm soup. She picks her chopsticks up but is stopped by Joon Hwi’s hand as he shifts the bowl toward him, away from her.
“Get yourself a fresh one. This is the first meal all day, isn’t it?” Joon Hwi calls her out, covering her noodles. Sol wants to argue for her soggy noodles, but she falls silent knowing how he revealed her secret. She hasn’t eaten all day after running reports and studying. Grumbling, she does as instructed and boils another bowl of ramyeon. When she’s back at the table with a fresh, hot, spicy and red bowl, she dives into it, wondering how she managed to survive the whole day.
Joon Hwi only gives a small smile looking at the girl slurping her noodles with delight and looking at her. Joon Hwi wasn’t lying. He did want to be her plus-one for the wedding. He knew that more than just being a comfort for Sol, he wanted to make this one day a day she could look back and smile at. That she could be pretty, relaxed and happy instead of stressing over her grades, exams and family.
“Fine.” Sol says as she continues slurping the spicy noodles. She blesses the spiciness of the noodles, such that she could blame her pink blush on it. Joon Hwi, clearing the cold noodles and getting water for both of them tilts his head in confusion.
“Come with me to the wedding, if you want to.” She mutters softly, almost shy to let him know. To hide her blush and hide her confusion, she lifts the still hot bowl to her face. She drinks the soup, but chokes on the spiciness. Joon Hwi lets out a light chuckle before passing her a bottle of cold water. Sol looks at him with narrowed eyes of annoyance, but graciously takes the water.
As he watches Sol eat her first bowl, then a second, as Joon Hwi munches on some crackers, he only smiles and laughs at whatever Sol was complaining about her reports and her frustrations at her cases that she picked. He lets out comforting words, but is rebutted back with Sol saying he will never get it because he’s smart unlike her.
As he went to bed that night, he only gave a giddy smile, burying his face in his sheets. He scored his point of taking Sol out on a date, and was already counting down. He officially succeeded in the first step of his plan.
The rest of it required a little bit of help. But he knew who to ask.
-----
“Yeseul! What is it that you need to wake me up on a weekend? I was up until 4am last night!” Sol grumbles as she places her phone on speaker, rubbing her eyes. It was 8am, way too early for Sol to process any emergencies. Well, if it was Yeseul, she would do it any time.
“Sorry, unnie. But it’s urgent. Could you meet me in 10 minutes at the lobby?” Yeseul’s bright voice echos. Sol notices her roomie’s bed made, pillows nicely fluffed and sheets tucked in neatly in pure perfection. She isn’t surprised, considering how she gets up early anyways.
“Fine.” Sol says and hangs up, getting a fresh change of clothes and heading to the bathroom to wash up. She throws on a hoodie, grabbing her only tanned ochre coat and grabs her bag, before jogging downstairs to the lobby. There, Yeseul is standing there, with a sling black bag and with one of the many nude heels she has, hair styled to perfection.
“Unnie!” Yeseul waves her hand over. Walking closer, Sol notices two other familiar friends behind as she scoffs.
“Joonhwi? Bokgi? What are you doing here?” She asks, her hand playing with the strap of her bag unconsciously. She was surprised to see Joonhwi, but even more Bokgi, who usually spends mornings sleeping in. Joonhwi only gives his usual cheeky smile and drags a drowsy Bokgi with him out towards to the main entrance of the school. Dumbfounded, Yeseul takes this moment to link her arm with Sol’s as she leads her out and catch Sol up to their agenda today.
“What?! You’re bringing me where?” Sol exclaims, her voice echoing throughout the lobby. Yeseul shushes her as she drags a shocked Sol out of school. Yeseul didn't need the whole school to know where Sol was going.
“Unnie, please? You need a dress for the wedding, and don’t think you are going to go in one of mine or your old ones! Besides, you promised to go shopping with me one day, right?” Yeseul defends herself as Sol sighs.
Yeseul wasn’t wrong. The wedding was just a week away and she had absolutely nothing to wear. She owned a couple pairs of flats, but they were so old, it would be embarrassing to attend with those. And her dresses were either too big or too small. She was so caught up with school after submitting her reply to Jiyoon, that she would have forgotten about the wedding if it wasn’t for the post-it on her bedside wall.
“But...but...” Sol couldn’t find any reasons to counter. She knew Yeseul was right. Besides, it’s a weekend. And they had no upcoming tests or projects, so there was no harm in doing something besides studying in the copy room. She nods, defeated, earning a smile from Yeseul.
“Wait, then why is Joonhwi and- Who’s car is that?!” Sol’s thoughts are cut off when she sees a familiar black sedan waiting by the entrance as Sol and Yeseul just exit. In the car, she manages to see a Joonhwi in the driver’s seat and Bokgi riding shotgun.
“Yah! Han Joon Hwi! Isn’t this my roomie’s car?” She shouts as she strides a couple of steps when Joonhwi rolls the window down.
“She loaned me the car for today. Don’t want you carrying so many things back from shopping today.” He replies curtly. Bokgi opens his passenger side door on the right.
“Bokgi-”
“Noona, sit in front. I’m too tired to watch Joonhwi-hyung drive.” Bokgi mutters before he climbs into the backseat with Yeseul. Sol wordlessly settles into the seat next to Joonhwi, who only looks at her with a smile. Sol catches his odd looks and pauses.
“What?”
“Ready for shopping?” He has his cheeky smile on again. Sol glares in annoyance before turning behind to Yeseul.
“Did you make him drive?” Yeseul shakes her head and spills out her defensive explanation.
“Oppa called me up yesterday! He just said he needed my help to accompany you shopping for a dress!”
“Then, why is Bokgi here? Trying on dresses too?”
“Noona! I’m listening!” Joonhwi only laughs and shakes his head.
“He’s just accompanying me.” Joonhwi says as he begins to drive off.
Well, Joonhwi wasn't lying. He waited till their quizzes and projects were over before executing this. He knew Sol was busy, and had waited for the busy season to pass before calling Yeseul. He explained that he knew Sol would not go shop for a dress, and he needs her help to accompany him and her. She willingly, too willingly, agreed.
Next, he asked Sol B if he could borrow her car, knowing how Sol was not going to go home with just one dress and one pair of shoes when Yeseul was involved. Sol B was skeptical, but just passed the keys over to him. Besides, she was going to be in school studying all day; she didn’t need the car. Bokgi joined in, as Joonhwi couldn’t spend hours on end waiting for the ladies to shop. On further thought, Bokgi just might help him out with something.
“I could go myself with Yeseul. You didn’t have to wake up for this.” Sol mutters just loud enough for him to hear, fiddling with her fingers. Joonhwi returns with a light scoff.
“As if you’ll do it.” Sol glares at him from the side and is ready to punch him, but retracts her hand, knowing she might literally kill everyone in the car. The ride from the school to the bustling heart of Seoul is a rough twenty minute ride. Bokgi takes this time to catch a wink and Sol does the same, but she can't seem to do it.
Something about Joonhwi bringing her out to buy a dress specially made her heart flutter a bit more than usual. She knew that Joonhwi cared for her. The ways that he left rolls of gimbaps and energy drinks as opposed to coffee on her table during her tough days. The moments when he would offer his jacket as a pillow wordlessly when she wanted to rest her head after hours of studying. The unspoken synchronisation between them was just a showing of how they understood each other inside and out.
Sol thought nothing of it. She knew him as long as she stepped into school when he saved her from Professor Yang. They spent almost everyday studying, having classes and eating together. After all, they are best friends, and don’t best friends do this? They look out for each other, right?
He is going to be my plus-one at Jiyoon’s wedding. He’s taking me to shop for a dress.
Sol wonders, truly for the car ride as she stares outside at the blue skies and empty streets of Seoul, if Han Joonhwi meant more than friends to her. If… she wanted more.
Deep down, she couldn’t deny hoping for more. She liked the way he looked at her, eyes crinkled and smiling in half moons, the sweet smile that she couldn’t help but return. She has never had many relationships, considering her experience in school and afterwards. She was just too busy; too focussed. Seeing how this man cared for her just made her feel so… special.
She has never felt that way.
