Imagine waking up to your entire neighbourhood being in an apocalyptic scenario, and you’re the last to find out about it-

technically the last neighbor is Sally BUT Julie is the last "normal-sleeping" neighbor to wake and yeah! she sure has a hell of a time! i mean tbh it's kinda her And Barnaby? they wake up within a week of each other (the neighbors wake via Pacific Rim kaiju rules) so their breakdowns overlap <3

Sonic Frontiers: Fandom and Eggman's Development (spoilers)

I love that most of the Sonic fandom has just naturally accepted new family dynamics with new characters. First it was for Sonic in the movies to the point where movie Sonic has his own tag as ‘Sonic Wachowski’ on tumblr and now for Sonic Frontiers we have ‘Sage Robotnik’ because most of us are like "Eggman's a dad now! Canon. We love to see it!"

Oddly enough, I'm seeing some folks here not enjoying Eggman's development. As if his new character dynamic somehow wipes away his evil nature. I don't think it takes away his character. I just think it makes Eggman more interesting and faceted. People say Eggman's out of character because he's not wacky and over the top, but the whole game's tone has been subdued. If voice inflection was a direct causation of character then the entire cast would be considered "out of character."

To me, everyone had a more somber voice direction but they were still themselves. If anything, I think in Eggman's case we're gonna see more complex stories from now on. We've been long past the "way past cool" cartoony vibe and while Sonic is still a cool character, he's also older as well as the rest of the cast. Everyone has matured and I'm glad the games can explore different stories because of that.

There are also people complaining that this story is like fanfic... but honestly, I think this is a good thing. A lot of franchises (especially well-established franchises) would never touch a story like this. To me though, it shows that Sonic Team was willing to take risks to see where they can go with their characters. While I love the characters, their base forms have grown stale in the past decade. This game was a fresh change of pace. Amy has a character again, Knuckles isn't an idiot, Tails got his agency back, and Sonic got his personality restored.

But what about Eggman? If they kept him cartoonish he wouldn't have fit with the story’s somber atmosphere. It would have been too much of a tonal clash. If Eggman was going to fit in with the evolved form of the other characters he needed to evolve himself. Giving him a daughter explores new frontiers (hehehe) and breathes new life to what otherwise has become somewhat of a stale character. I love his cartoonish villainy, but it hasn't been anything other than that since Sonic Heros. Now he has a whole new side to him that we don't know about... and that's exciting! I think his new development won't change his dynamic with everyone else nor will it stop him from being a villain. It just gives him more to work with and explore for future games.

For a franchise to continue its success, its characters need to evolve and I'm excited to see that the Sonic series is exploring new ideas. We’ve been in a new era for the franchise which is continued in Sonic Frontiers and I'm excited to see how the future develops!
