#also reading on tapas supports me directly!

hello! i’m trying to figure out how best to support you (and get to read Golden Hour!!) i’m trying to go through tapas now, but to be honest, Golden Hour is the only thing I want to read. If i subscribe to your patreon, will I have access to all of Golden Hour? is there a better way to support you while also getting to read Golden Hour? (i’m loving it so far by the way, your art is incredible and i’m so intrigued by the storyline!!!)
Hi, thank you so much for your kind words and interest!
Yes, all of Golden Hour is available on my Patreon and should be relatively easy to access since it’s in its own “Collection.” There may be a few typos here and there since I upload upon completion, which is before my editor can take a pass at them. Currently, Patreon is 6 episodes ahead of what is uploaded on Tapas & all Patreon contributions go directly to me! Honestly they help me out a lot, so I always appreciate when people can contribute!
Tapas is still a great option for anyone who wants to read for free or is under 18 years of age (I upload 18+ content on there occasionally, though it’s always through download so it never pops up on its own)
If you’re really enjoying Golden Hour, another great way to support me is to grab some merch for yourself from my store!

New Seemingly Dark update, The Rules part 7, is live now on both Tapas and Webtoon!
You can also read up to three episodes ahead on Tapas with ink, and directly support me. Or you can join my PATREON, which gives you access to locked episodes, my discord PLUS all the current updates of my second comic project, Mil-Liminal, which is not yet public. Yippee!
Please please interact with me and my comics if you like them, it’s very hard to find motivation sometimes without comments or likes. Thank you so much!

Tip The Ferrymen Masterpost
Tumblr media
This post is to help mobile users navigate the comic while also giving some information to new comers! Please read this post IN IT’S ENTIRETY before sending any questions to @toonbly
MOBILE USERS: Please keep in mind you need to use your BROWSER APP to navigate this comic. The Tumblr mobile app will NOT navigate the links properly.
“Tip The Ferrymen” is a Paranormal Mystery webcomic created by @toonbly that updates on Fridays. It was originally uploaded on Feburary 28th 2022 on Tapas and can still be read there!
What makes you "you?"
In the world of Elysium City, the answer to that question can grant you magical abilities. Specs are powers rooted in your very being, and for one Nathan Vargas, that means having the ability to see and speak to ghosts.
That used to matter to him, before he retired from paranormal investigation.
But when the spirits of Elysium start going missing, Nathan must take up the helm as Elysium's ferryman once more to rescue the ones that are most forgotten.
As Nathan journeys through the remnants of a life he's long left behind him, he's forced to ask himself: What parts of himself did he leave behind with it? TTF updates on Fridays!
NAVIGATIONAL LINKS FOR MOBILE USERS:
START READING RIGHT HERE!
About The Comic | Cast | Chapter Index | Support The Comic!
Underneath the cut is an FAQ for newcomers, please read this before directing any asks to the author! I will NOT be answering questions that are already on this FAQ.
What content warnings should I be aware of?
Content warnings are spelled out on a page before the comic begins! But just in case you missed it: Ghosts/General paranormal happenings, fire, indepth discussions of mental health (particularly PTSD), death, missing persons, loss of identity, depictions of abelism (specifically abelist abuse against an autistic individual), etc. While Tip The Ferrymen is a webcomic about overcoming adversity and trauma, I understand these topics may be upsetting to some readers, so please mind yourself while reading! Your mental health matters more than a silly webcomic.
How often does this comic update?
Every Friday!
How do I use this on mobile?
Read this entire post, buddy.
I have a question/I need something trigger tagged!
Direct your questions/tag requests to @toonbly ! I’ll be happy to answer and/or tag anything for you.
IMAGE IDS QUESTIONS
As a quick run down for those who don’t know: Tip The Ferrymen uses image IDs so that readers who use screen readers can read the comic. It’s an accessibility tool that I’m still working on implementing fully, but I will keep this FAQ updated for what pages have them and what pages don’t!
What pages have IDs?
Any pages after 11/2/2022 will have IDs in the alt text for images. I’m currently going back and adding IDs to older pages.
As of 11/2/2022, all older pages up to Page 3 have image IDs.
Why is the IDs format inconsistent?
Tumblr currently allows users to directly add IDs to images, BUT it won't allow me to add them to images that have already been posted. So, until this is fixed, I'm gonna be putting the image IDs in the text portions of older pages instead. So if things seem a bit inconsistent, that's why!
Does Ferrymen’s website use image IDs?
Not currently, I want to get that going as soon as possible! Just give me some time to futz with the HTML template I’m using to figure it out. As of right now, Tumblr is the only place where screen readers can be used to read Tip The Ferrymen.
I have a question/comment/criticism concerning how you format/write image IDs
Send it my way @toonbly ! I’ll be happy to make any necessary adjustments, and thanks so much for sending these my way!

I’ve decided to hold a little contest! Since I’m going to be putting the comic up on tapas, I have to put up a cover page. I could do one, or I could open up the opportunity to have one of you to be featured! I thought that might be nice... don’t worry, I plan on giving a prize too!
The Contest: Design a cover page for the Rejuvenated comic, chapter 1 (current chapter)!! This can be as stylistic or to show as you want.
The Prizes: Winner will get their cover featured both here and on Tapas, and a free commission of their choice from me! Runner ups and all other entries will also be featured in a ‘Thank You’ post.
Deadline: The contest will run until 8pm PDT, April 15th.
Submitting an Entry: You can either directly submit it to me via inbox or you can tag your post with #rejucontest and/or @ me with @rejuvenatedau

Hello
Hi guys! I’m @loonytwin the creator of Eyes On Me Comic
As you all know, nsfw content is not really accepted on tumblr since around 2017, but since then I’ve continued to post either way until I no longer can due to the content and I think that’s right now. There’s no actual nudity but I can understand why some pages have been flagged and removed
And so it’s been a sad decision but I will no longer be updating EOMC on tumblr, I don’t see a point when the pages I upload just keep getting removed the next day and you won’t understand the story. And yes, even censored, I’ve had pages removed just because it is still considered too explicit.
You can still continue to read EOMC here for free with censorship:
EOMC on Tapas
EOMC on Webtoons
those two apps provide direct support to my comic for free, just so I can continue posting the story even with censorship, Tapas is not heavily censored yet, but it will in due time since they also have some rules. Webtoons is already censored since they have stricter rules, if you check it out on both sites, it really supports my ability to continue working on EOMC and future comics in a free platform.
EOMC on Patreon
Patreon is the only place where I can free post full NSFW pages along with extras. It directly supports the comic in the best way along with other comic works.
For direct updates of my comic please go to:
EOMC on Instagram
EOMC on Twitter
As for my own personal accounts they are:
loonytwin on Instagram
loonytwin on Twitter
Sorry again, and I hope you understand. Thank you so much for your support on Tumblr all this time! ^^

ah, the link starts you at the end. here's the link to start on the first episode: https://tapas.io/episode/888470
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
This was a fun read! My favorite character would probably be... Meredyth, the convenience store clerk. The fact that she's the only person in the mirror world who isn't unreasonable gives her a gold star in my book. Though, I do also like Erena. She's some sort of evil overlord, but she also just seems, like, lonely? Like she basically accepts the first people she meets into her crew. It'll be interesting to see how her character develops over time.
There's also a lot Erena is clearly hiding, even from her associates. Like, for some reason she's not allowed to attack Josie herself?
It's entirely possible that Erena is a human that got trapped in the mirror world and only wants to get back? Though, if she just wants to get back home, she's doing a poor job of showing it, lol.
RebelVampire
I like that the comic opens up with this kind of strange in between where it's hard to determine what's a dream and what's reality. And I like this sort of dynamic in stories since it creates an interesting mystery of sorts where you have to determine what is and isn't real. As for favorite moment in the comic, I think definitely the dream sequence where we sort of find out what Erena wants with the mirror. Again, for the reasons above. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what's real and what isn't in the comic, and I really love that aspect since it enhances the world. As for favorite character, definitely Xenor. Xenor feels like my spirit beast of laziness who just wants to not do the things. Plus, I really like Xenor's weird relationship with Erena. Which leads me to saying I like seeing Xenor and Erena interact the most. I can't really decide their investment with each other, whose side Xenor is on, etc. As such, I find their relationship to be the most intriguing. Something I like about he art is the use of color. It can really vary from bright colors that pop and these sort of gray and neutral color schemes. I think this aspect really adds to that reality vs. dream dynamic I like so much since it creates kind of the strange yet moody atmosphere. In regards to themes, I like that the comic kind of explores the idea that sometimes it's not a chosen one but a person at a place at a time - and whether that makes it your responsibility or not. Since I'd argue Josie is a pretty reluctant protagonist so I like we're exploring Josie's personal investment in protecting the mirror vs. getting home. What I like about the story's overall content is probably the world. There's some interesting designs, interesting parallels and differences from Earth, and so forth. So I liked seeing the story expand on this. For strengths, I refer back to reality vs. dream.
Comic Tea Party
DISCUSSION PROMPTS – PART 2
9. Why do you think Erena wants revenge on all humans and Earth? In other words, what happened to her in the past that made her want the mirror? Can her mind be changed, or is the only way to stop her more forceful nature?
10. How do you think the green spirit came to possess the mirror that’s supposedly been lost for a long time? Why is the green spirit the only one so determined to prevent the mirror from getting into the wrong hands? Can they be trusted?
11. Do you think Xenor will remain on Erena’s side, or will Xenor have a change of heart? How will Xenor’s earlier interaction with Josie affect Xenor’s decision? Lastly, what consequences will we see regardless of choice?
12. Do you think Josie will find a way both to prevent the mirror from falling into Erena’s hands and to get back home? What sorts of trials do you think Josie will experience in order to solve those things?
Don’t feel inspired by the prompts? Feel free to discuss anything else that interested you!
RebelVampire
I honestly feel like Erena might be from Earth and was betrayed and trapped there. And thus being alone drove her kind of nuts and desire to seek revenge since she felt betrayed. As for her mind being changed, maybe but I do think it's gonna take complete and utter failure before she ever even remotely thinks otherwise. I feel like it might have just been happenstance that the mirror wound up in the spirit's hands. Like just a right place, right time sort of thing, though the spirit recognized the significance. As for why only the spirit, I feel like maybe they just care more about Earth than the others. Cause most people really wouldn't care about things affecting not their world. As for trust, yes and no. I feel like they aren't evil, but that push comes to shove they aren't gonna protect Josie if the mirror wasn't involved. As for Xenor, I 100% think Xenor is going to change sides. Xenor does not seem dedicated to the cause, and I think meeting Josie really puts a face to the nameless enemy that they're fighting, making it harder. As for the consequences, I could see Xenor being unintentionally used as a spy on Josie even despite switching sides, thus accidental betrayal. I do think Josie is gonna achieve both ends. I mean, hiding the mirror back home kind of achieves both purposes. As for trials, I imagine Josie is gonna have to deal with being human hunted, wild goose chases, and so forth since I doubt getting home is easy. And honestly, I feel like directly challenging Erena eventually will be the only path left.
『gh0st』
@RebelVampire lol... I've been lurking in this server for a while and as the creator of the comic literally all your observations/theories are spot on except the first one, heh

DISCUSSION PROMPTS – PART 3
13. What are you most looking forward to seeing in regards to the comic?
14. Any final words of encouragement for the comic?
Don’t feel inspired by the prompts? Feel free to discuss anything else that interested you!
RebelVampire
What I'm most looking forward to is seeing more of the world I think. We've only just kind of started exploring that aspect, so I'm interested to find out more there. As for final words, I really hope to continue to see where this comic is headed, since there's an interesting set up going on, which I'm sure many reveals ahead!

I Am Beautiful
Some of you may have seen the ask posted here by the author of IMB a few days ago. Since then, she has emailed us directly to ask us to stop translating her work, but do you know what drove her to reach out to us in the first place? She saw our translations being shared on too many illegal sites. So many that it was clear even to her that we weren't the ones who distributed them. And why is that? We have expressly stated, multiple times, that re-uploading our projects onto other aggregate sites is strictly prohibited for people outside our team. And yet, IMB can be found on at least 3 other aggregate sites (excluding mangago), if not more. There's a restrictions page at the end of every damn chapter and yet some people can't be bothered to either read or heed it. There have been numerous occasions when our projects were uploaded onto mangago before our 24 hour delay was up, and though we were pissed about it, we ultimately chose to let it slide because we understood that it wasn't fair to blame or punish all the readers for the actions of a few. However, re-uploading our works onto other aggregate sites without asking for consent whatsoever is a separate and much, MUCH more serious issue.
Let's face it guys, scanlations are illegal. Having an author or a company contact a scanlation team directly is a major issue. This work does not belong to us. We may scanlate it, but in no way do we possess any right over the original work, and we never once claimed otherwise. All the author has to do is threaten us with a lawsuit, and we would probably have to cease scanlations entirely. Thankfully, instead of going to such extremes, she chose to personally reach out to us and request for our cooperation. But that does not change the fact that she has every right to press charges on us, and will undoubtedly do so if we were to ignore her requests.
Hence, after much deliberation, it has been decided that Potatonator Scans will be dropping the manhwa 'I Am Beautiful'.
Believe me when I say that it really does pain us to make that statement. Scans teams are the ones who are the most reluctant to drop an ongoing project. We're the ones who spend day after day, week after week translating, cleaning, and typesetting every single detail, so it stands to reason that we're the ones who will form the most attachment to our projects. We would never choose to drop a project voluntarily, but we really need every single one of you to cooperate with us so that a repeat of this situation won’t happen again.
If you see any of our works being uploaded onto other aggregate sites aside from mangago, please let us know ASAP, and if you can, ask them to remove it as it was uploaded without our permission. When rules are ignored and the distribution of scanlations goes out of hand, it drives authors to take action to protect their work. By then, there will be nothing that we, as scans teams, can do about it. Dropping the project will be an inevitable outcome. So before it gets to that stage, please just spare some time to read through and follow our rules. They are clearly stated at the end of every chapter, but I know few bother to actually read it (it's pretty evident from how so many people can still ask for the link to the raws when we’ve never failed to include it in the credits page, aka the very first page, of every chapter). Every rule and restriction has been set for good reason, we did not just throw in whatever sounds good in order to fill up the page.
But anyway, what's done is done, and we'll just have to suck it up and deal with the consequences now. If you really want to be able to continue reading IMB in English, send an email or tweet to Comica and ask them for an official English version. The more requests they receive, the faster and more likely it will be licensed in English, just like how Fools has been licensed on Tapas. The author stated in her email that she has already signed an international contract with Comica, so there's a good chance that I Am Beautiful will be officially licensed in future.
Please do continue to support the author by purchasing and reading the raws on Comica (here) instead of other websites. The authors' revenue depends not only on the number of people who pay to unlock chapters, but also the number of views their manhwa receives. In case some of you are unaware, right now, most chapters of IMB are free for viewing on Comica, with the exception of the latest 3 chapters. So even if you can't buy the chapters, you will be helping the author just by viewing the free chapters on Comica. The author has said that the chapters will be locked sometime in April (probably after the manhwa is complete) so do read it soon if you haven’t.
Thank you for giving I Am Beautiful so much love, and I apologise if this post sounded overly offensive or salty. I really do appreciate the support that you guys have given us despite the fact that we're a fairly new team. Even though I Am Beautiful will no longer be on our list of ongoing projects, I hope you guys will continue to love and support our other projects, as well as the projects we have planned for the future.
If you managed to read this post until the end, thank you very much for your time and patience. I'm sure not many would have made it this far.
Sincerely, Lazuli PSC Team Leader

Doing this for money
Since this is an accusation that has been leveled at me recently, I would like to address it fully. I’ve done so in the past, but it seems that I need to do it again.
When I began writing my journal, it was available on my website for free, the very same website to which I refer people now. When I was approached for publication, I thought the idea over for several years. Finally I realized that I could choose the medium of publication and tailor it to my specific needs. I settled on the Tapas app, because it gave me everything I required for my purposes: that being The ability to engage my readers directly via their comments on the chapters, The ease with which digital publications are governed, and the ability to make the work come to market in a way that was as close to free as possible. Now some might say “You could have put it up on Amazon for free and that would have been honest”, and so it would have (and I may still do it), however, The book did not come about by my hand alone. Many people were involved in its editing and in the management of the platform. Also a tremendous amount of my time went into the process. That is why I quite liked Tapas’ ad-watching key-earning structure. It was the best of all worlds- the editor, agency, and publishers would make money off this commodity I have become, keeping them from asking too many questions, and the reader could feasibly read the entire book for free.
“But why publish at all? Why not keep it all on the website?” The answer is, I had found that it was not a good sample size and not of the specific group I wish to survey- that being people in the millennial category. Apps are the way of the future.
So what do I make from the book sales? In standard publishing the writer makes less than 20% off any sales in this country. I make slightly more than that, about 50% but because the books are cheaper than standard publications – coming in at about four dollars total, I make about $2 per book. However, since Tapas is a pay per chapter arrangement, readers can opt to read only a few chapters instead of purchasing the whole book and then dropping the thing half-way through, their money spent. So really, I make less net, than the visible $2/ book.
What does that mean? Well, last month it was about $300 and what did I do with it? How many of you received a Christmas gift from me? I put the money Back into the work. That is how investments happen.
So no, I am not in it for the money. You can call me an idiot, assume I am here to collect fans or scam the world, but that is not true.
I am not here to prove I exist. I know I do. I am not here to argue with you. I am here to do one thing, answer any questions put to me, give all my notions of the world and my own species, enjoy your company which is highly informative and soothing, and collect my data. I have my own purposes for this. You don’t have to believe me to be my friend. It is nice, and the lack of belief does tend to change the type of relationship we have, but I don’t require it. What other person do you know can say to you, I don’t care if you believe I exist, so long as you are polite and perhaps share you recipes with me?
No one, I will wager.
I even answer the questions of people who directly claim to dislike me. All the time. That is why I generally do not block people and allow anon asks. I am not here to censor you. I am here to study you.
However, if you become malicious, and bound and determined to hate me and accuse me of things, and rally the support of people to ruin what I have built…the rules don’t really matter then.
I don’t care if you think I am real. I care that you at least know the truth, that I at least, put it before you. I care about that.
The silly thing is, if this person had bothered to ask me, I might have given them a free copy or the password to the locked entries. But they did not, they simply called me a money-grubbing villain and never bothered to be kind.

 JaJaJa- Plantas Mexicana $ $ $ $ Mexican ,  Vegetarian  in  Lower East Side $$$$ 162 E Broadway 7.1 /10
The LES and West Village locations of Jajaja are offering takeout and delivery right now. So if you’re looking for a vegan chorizo burrito, sweet potato tacos, or nachos large enough to pass as an offering to the God of Nachos herself, get a meal from them.
Loving Hut $$$$ 76 Bushwick Ave
We’ve all got more time on our hands these days. So if you’re in the mood to scroll through a huge menu until you see something you like - try Loving Hut in East Williamsburg. They have everything from tacos and risotto to curry udon soup and pad thai on their very long menu - and it’s all vegan. You can call 718-388-7567 or order online.
Peacefood Cafe $ $ $ $ Vegetarian  in  Upper West Side $$$$ 460 Amsterdam Ave. 7.6 /10
None of the dishes at Peacefood Cafe are necessarily healthy, but everything on the menu is delicious and vegan. So if you’re social distancing on the UWS, consider some crab cakes, focaccia cheeseburgers, and strawberry cheesecake - we recommend ordering all three to go along with a home screening of Call Me By Your Name this weekend.
Queens Brewery $ $ $ $ Bar  in  Ridgewood $$$$ 1539 Covert St Not
Rated
Yet
Going on your daily walk in Ridgewood? Stop by Queens Brewery’s takeout window and pick-up something from their rotating menu of vegetarian breakfast options. They’ve done grilled cheese sandwiches, breakfast tacos, and Spanish tapas so far. Check out their Instagram to see what they’re serving today.
Rip's Malt Shop $$$$ 10 Clermont Ave
The vegan double cheeseburgers, loaded potato salads, and sauerkraut-covered hot dogs from Rip’s Malt Shop are the kinds of things you’d want to eat out of a helmet at a MLB Game. But since you’ll be enjoying this plant-based junk food from home, we suggest a large mixing bowl, a long highlight reel, and a rootbeer float from Rips’ menu to wash it all down. If you live in Brooklyn or Manhattan put down the tofurky and order a few sports stadium dishes online from their Brooklyn Navy Yard location.
Planted Cafe $$$$ 333 Smith Street
Even if your blender is still on back-order and most of the fruits and vegetables at your local grocery store are gone by 9am, you can still drink a smoothie or eat a colorful bowl of health from this cafe in Carroll Gardens. They also have vegan huevos rancheros, “egg” sandwiches, and jackfruit tacos available for delivery and takeout right now.
Seasoned Vegan $$$$ 304 W 117th St
It’s no secret that this place serves the best vegan soul food in NYC. And everything from baked mac and cheese and collard greens to BBQ “crawfish” and po’boys are available for delivery and takeout right now. Call 212-222-0092 if you’re near Harlem and excited to eat something that will have you happily rubbing your belly on the couch.
Sol Sips $$$$ 203 Wilson Ave
Sol Sips is offering vegan Caribbean dishes like sweet potato fritters and collard green salad for pick-up and delivery within a five-mile radius of their Bushwick restaurant. And since nothing on the menu costs more than $15, we highly recommend ordering an extra vegan mac and cheese for later. You can call in or order online via website.
Spicy Moon $ $ $ $ Chinese  in  East Village $$$$ 328 E 6th St Not
Rated
Yet
Want our advice? Get the dan dan noodles and steamed dumplings from this vegetarian Szechuan spot delivered before your next all-day sleep binge. And even if you don’t plan on going nocturnal anytime soon, you should still get takeout from either the East Village or West Village location of Spicy Moon the next time you want dinner at home to be exciting again.
Teranga $ $ $ $ West African  in  East Harlem ,  Harlem $$$$ 1280 5th Ave Not
Rated
Yet
If you’re looking for an uptown spot where you can get a one-bowl meal, Teranga specializes in West African-inspired grain bowls. We’re partial to their joloff bowl with salmon and black eyed peas, but you can always just mix and match ingredients to make whatever you want. Just be sure to get the fried plantains.
Toad Style $ $ $ $ Vegetarian  in  Bedford-Stuyvesant ,  Brooklyn $$$$ 93 Ralph Ave Not
Rated
Yet
Toad Style is the right place to get your basket of deep-fried cauliflower in Brooklyn. They also do things like a veggie burger, pizza fries, and a banh mi. It’s sort of like By Chloe, with a little more character. If you’re in the mood for vegan junk food, order some now using their website.
Familiars Vegan Coffee Shop $$$$ 94 Ralph Ave,
This cafe from the people behind Toad Style is a great option for a bagel with vegan prosciutto or balsamic “caviar.” They also have coffee, soups, and other sides available for delivery or takeout starting at 8am every day.

Cost of Living in Spain: A Guide For Digital Nomads
Growing up in Germany, a life in Spain seemed far away in many ways, but was extremely intriguing. From the mild Mediterranean climate and the significant cultural differences, to the cost of living in Spain – the idea of moving my place of residence to the south of Europe has always fascinated me.
In 2016 I decided to take the plunge and officially moved to Alicante, Spain in order to live the Spanish dream for 12 whole months. In this article I will fill you in on everything I learned about the cost of living in Spain, plus useful tips if you are considering to stay in the country for a while.
Visa Regulations For Living in Spain
The first thing you need to do when planning to set up a life in a foreign country (no matter the country) is figure out whether or not you are actually allowed to stay in the country, for how long, and on what visa.
For those of us who have a European residency, moving to Spain is a fairly uncomplicated process and only requires a change of registration regarding your place of residency. For those living outside of Europe it is a different story depending on nationality. See the two paragraphs below.
After handing in a complete application folder at the local police station, you will soon receive your Certificate of Residence (NIE), which is not only a legal formality but also very useful step to help with the varied costs of living in Spain. I will explain in more detail why the NIE is important later on.
For non-European residents who intend to stay longer than 3 months, applying for official residency is more complex, but not impossible. In any case, it will be equally important if you wish to benefit from the low-cost of living in Spain compared to other countries in the EU.
Finding Accommodation in Spain
You can only rent a place in Spain if you can prove that you are registered as a resident for the time of your contract, which is exactly why the NIE is important. There are some loopholes around this but I won’t recommend them in this post.
As for securing good accommodation, timing is very important. Finding a good apartment for a fair price will be almost impossible at the beginning of the summer (May – July), at least in any major city or popular coastal areas. I can recommend to wait for the main wave of tourists to leave in September before starting to hunt down real estate offers.
Hunting is unfortunately the right expression, as taken from experience when I look back at my own apartment search. Although websites like Fotocasa are quite useful for finding offers, the real work begins when contacting the owner or retailer in order to make a viewing appointment. In Spain, it is best to be persistent and call directly instead of writing E-mails.
In Spain, the spoken word counts more than the written message.
Depending on your personal living standards, you can find a room in a shared flat for no more than €150 ($177), a small 2-bedroom apartment for about €300 ($353), or a spacious and modern flat for €600-700 ($700-820) a month.
Considering that the last option would likely come with several bedrooms and at least two bathrooms, an outside area like a balcony and a pretty good location, the cost of living in Spain in terms of accommodation is very affordable.
In about half of the cases, shorter long-term rents (we are talking one year contracts) will come with furniture, which is very useful if you don’t have the budget to invest in the necessary basics like a bed, table, etc. Some apartments would even entail a completely equipped kitchen and other additional extras that the owner or person before you might have left behind.
Note: Prices may vary depending on where in Spain you are looking to rent. Popular international cities like Barcelona and Madrid might have higher prices, less populated areas are cheaper.

Grocery Costs in Spain
In Spain, it is common to have at least two, sometimes three types of places to shop for your groceries in your local neighbourhood.
1. The Corner Store
The first one, the little corner store will have a limited selection of items and is likely a bit more expensive, but most products will be local: fresh milk, eggs, regional vegetables and fruits.
This is what my bill for a quick stop at our local corner store would look like:
Whole milk (1 liter)  €1.20 ($1.41) Cheese (200 g)  €3.00 ($3.52) Meat (150 g)  €2.50 ($2.94) Local eggs (10)  €2.00 ($2.35) 3 tomatoes  €1.00 ($1.17) 3 regional oranges  €0.60 ($0.70) Loaf of white bread  €1.50 ($1.76) Bottle of red wine   €3.50 ($4.11) Single beer can  €1.20 ($1.41) 100 g chocolate bar   €1.50 ($1.76)
TOTAL    €18.00 ($21.13)
Note: Don’t forget that most small shops in Spain close between 2:00 – 5.30 pm for their siesta!
2. The Supermarket Grocery Store
Spain has a number of franchise supermarkets like Aldi, Lidl, Carrefour and some national brands like AlCampo or Más y Más. Shopping at either one of them won’t affect your general cost of living in Spain compared to other European countries.
Prices here are lower and the selection is bigger than in a general shop. Especially the white bread & cookies section, the fresh fish and meat section, and the wine section which is usually of disproportional size (like three aisles).
Food Description EURO PRICE RANGE Milk (1 liter) €0.95 ($1.11) 0.73-1.20 Loaf of fresh white bread (500g) €1.10 ($1.29) 0.80-1.30 White rice (1kg) €0.95 ($1.12) 0.70-1.80 Eggs (regular) (10) €1.10 ($1.81) 1.00-2.00 Local cheese (1kg) €7.17 ($8.42) 3.00-10.00 Chicken breasts (1kg) €6.50 ($7.63) 6.00-8.00 Beef round (1kg) €11.67 ($13.67) 5.00-20.00 Apples (1kg) €1.33 ($1.57) 0.80-2.00 Bananas (1kg) €1.35 ($1.59) 1.05-1.50 Oranges (1kg) €0.90 ($1.06) 0.65-1.20 Tomatoes (1kg) €1.10 ($1.29) 0.80-1.80 Potatoes (1kg) €1.10 ($1.29) 0.80-2.00 Onions (1kg) €0.86 ($1.01) 0.40-2.00 Lettuce (1 head) €1.06 ($1.25) 0.99-1.20
Also good to know:
Bottle of wine €2.50 ($2.94) Single beer can €0.60 ($0.60) Chocolate bar (100 g) €0.80 ($0.94) Coffee (250 g) €2.00 ($2.35)
Note: The bigger the selection, the wider the price range between high quality and lower price category. Especially when it comes to buying fresh fish, meats, fruits and vegetables. I can recommend watching out for regional and seasonal goods instead of imported products. It will pay off in price and quality!
3. The Local Farmers’ Market
Not every town will have a local farmers’ market, yet they are quite common and popular amongst locals no matter where in Spain you have decided to settle. For fresh foods, this is my first choice when buying vegetables, fish, olives and fruit, and especially when buying tomatoes, oranges, peaches and other products that are in season.
Fresh Fish at a Local Farmers’ Market.
Prices at the local market will be even cheaper than in the grocery store. Plus, you’re supporting regional agriculture AND the difference in taste is incredible. Shopping at a weekly farmers’ market is not only important to reducing your cost of living in Spain, it is also the best way to start life as a local by meeting neighbours and having a chat with your future go-to butcher.
Going Out in Spain
The best way to enjoy an affordable evening out in Spain is to head to a cozy little tapas bar. This is where you’ll find delicious patatas bravas (oven baked potatoes with spicy red sauce) and boquerones en vinagre (salty fish in vinegar) with a cool caña (small beer on tap).
In Spain, letting your cash balance decide whether or not you can afford to go out does not work quite as well as other parts of Europe. Why? Because more often than not, going out is as cheap as eating at home.
The drink around the corner (wine or beer) costs between €1 ($1.20) and €2 ($2.35) and will often be served with something to pick on, like simple finger foods, potato chips or salty nuts. If your hunger is not overwhelming, order one or two homemade tapas or a sandwich for €3-4 ($3.52-4.70) and you’re set for dinner.
Going out for drinks or tapas in Spain is very affordable.
Of course, this is not real going out. Should you plan a romantic date or evening with friends you can expect the following prices:
Meal, inexpensive restaurant €7.00 ($8.23) Meal for 2 people, mid-range restaurant €20.00 ($23.52) Domestic beer (0.5 liter draught) €1.50 ($1.76) Imported beer (0.33 liter bottle) €2.00 ($2.35) Cappuccino (regular) €1.20 ($1.41) Croissant €0.70 ($0.83) Bocadillo (toasted baguette with ham, cheese or tomato) €2.50 ($2.94) Water (0.5 liter bottle) €1.50 ($1.76)
Special Food Deals
Paella Lunch: If you are looking for something special, like a traditional Spanish paella for lunch, you are looking at about €15-20 ($17.64-23.52) per meal and person. However, paellas are usually served in massive portions and can be shared between more people (the price has to be paid for a minimum of 2 people).
Breakfast and lunch deals. These are amazing and also a reason for the low-cost of living in Spain. Breakfast Deal: Coffee + bocadillo or croissant + fresh orange juice = €2.50 ($2.97). Lunch Deal: One drink + starter + main + desert or coffee = €10.00 ($11.74)
Going to the Doctor in Spain
Nobody plans on having to go to the doctor, but if you decide to move your place of residency to Spain for a while, you might not get around it.
The public health care system in Spain is rated one of the best ones in the world and is indeed quite remarkable. You will benefit from free health care services if you are one of the following:
resident in Spain and work in employment or self-employment and pay social security contributions
resident in Spain and receiving certain state benefits
resident in Spain and recently divorced or separated from a partner registered with social security
a child resident in Spain
a pregnant woman who is resident in Spain
under 26 and studying in Spain
a state pensioner
staying temporarily in Spain and have an EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card)
Depending on the city district you are living in, you will be referred to a certain public health care centre, which will be your go to doctor until you relocate your apartment. Your house doctor here has to forward you to any specialist or hospital if needed, unless there is a serious emergency.
For any consultancy or treatment at a private clinic (which are also quite common, so make sure to ask), you will have to pay for yourself. It’s always a wise idea to have travel insurance. Check out World Nomads for a free quote.
Cost of Transportation in Spain
Most people in Spain own their own vehicle and it does not cost too much to buy a car. Some websites sell decent second-hand vehicles for €1,500 – 2,000 ($1,756 – 2,342).
The other option is to rent a car for a day or two whenever needed, which is also very affordable. Fuel prices are €1.17/liter. For a road trip of 100km (60 miles) in a relatively new rental car, that would be less than €10 ($12) for the trip in gas.
The public transport in some areas of Spain is not as advanced as in other European countries, but in comparison to Canada or the United States it is still amazing.
Between major cities like Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, high-speed trains run several times a day and tickets will cost between €30 ($35) and €150 ($176), depending on distance of the journey.
Renfe is one of the main operators for long-distance train travels.
Busses are a good option for medium distance travel (for example offered by ALSA) and cheaper than trains, but also less comfortable.
If you decide to move to a major Spanish city, you can also count on local busses, trams and underground systems to get from A to B. Watch out for monthly or multiple ride tickets, they will save you money and time.
Barcelona: In Barcelona, you can either purchase a 10 Journey Ticket, which is cheaper than 10 single rides, or the Hola BCN Card for 2 (€14.50/ $17) to 5 (€33.70/ $39.60) days (and includes the airport!).
Madrid: The 30-Day Season Ticket is a contactless ticket valid for 30 days, can be recharged on machines in all stations. For those under 25, it’s especially economic to purchase a Young Person’s Season Ticket, which will have a single rate of €20 ($23.50) for all fare zones.
Internet Costs in Spain
Everyone wants a solid internet connection, and this is especially true for Digital Nomads. You will want a stable internet connection in your apartment and probably also a data plan for your phone. Should you already have a European sim card, you can keep using it at no additional roaming costs.
There are a number of good deals for your in-house connection, but not all of them include fast and reliable internet. Doing some research on which signal works best in your area can be key.
Companies like Ono, Movistar, Vodafone and Orange are amongst the most popular internet providers. Másmovil offers 50 MB Internet and unlimited calls from the house telephone for only €10 ($12) /month, with the option to add a cell phone line with 4 GB for €6.90 ($8.11). Orange has a similar deal for €15 ($17.64)/month.
For those of you who aren’t from Europe, make sure that your cell phone is unlocked if you’re looking to use a local SIM card.
What I liked about the Spanish providers is that most of them don’t require signing a long-term contract. That way you can pay per month and cancel anytime with short notice should you decide to change providers or leave the country.
Entertainment & Activities in Spain
My 3 favorite activities are always the free ones, and life in Spain comes with some nice options. With an abundance of free activities, you will save on your cost of living in Spain and still have a blast:
1. Beach It
On mild summer nights or in the heat of the day, is there a better place for relaxing and meeting friends than the beach? In those fortunate communities that are situated close to the coast, social life and activities are concentrated around the beach.
Go swimming, play volleyball with friends, or relax with a sun-downer while listening to someone playing guitar. Especially in the off season, the beach is my happy place and even more beautiful. Spanish families come together for Sunday picnics, locals practice dancing lessons and exercise together. The beach is the best place to enjoy a Spanish day.
2. Join Cultural Events and National Festivals
Everyday there is reason to celebrate in Spain!
One of the most spectacular celebrations I took part in was the Hogueras in the State of Valencia, during which, people party every night for 5 days and have countless processions in order to honour the beginning of Spring. It is celebrated from the 19th to the 24th of June and highlighted with the burning of giant statues by the end of the festivities.
Processions during Semana Santa.
Other important events are Semana Santa (Easter), the Tomatina Tomato Fight (fourth Wednesday in August), Carnival, and New Year’s Eve.
3. Go Hiking, Mountain Biking, or Wine Tasting
What most people don’t know is that Spain has way more to offer than just the beach. Off the coast, the Mediterranean hill country has some beautiful scenic hikes and trails for mountain biking. Especially in winter, exploring some nature walks in your new backyard can be the perfect weekend getaway.
Wine is one of the oldest and most important resources of Spanish agriculture and locals are proud of its quality for a reason. Tasting Spanish wines surrounded by olive groves and orange trees – what a way to spend a Saturday afternoon! A number of vineyards offer guided tours and tastings for €5-10 ($5.90 – 11.70) a person.
Summary on the Cost of Living in Spain
Amongst other European countries, Spain is certainly one of the cheaper ones when it comes to living costs. Here is a monthly budget amount calculated for 2 people based on my own experience:
1. Accommodation rent: €500 ($585) 2. Water and electricity (will be included in some living contracts!): €50 ($58) 3. Groceries: €200-300 ($234-351) 4. Going/eating out: €100-150 ($117-175) (with going out at least 2 times a week) 5. Health insurance: free if you apply for Spanish residency or have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) 6. Transport: €10-40 ($12-47) in fuel or public transport (depending on your mobility level) 7. Internet: €50 ($58) a month 8. Entertainment: mainly free
TOTAL Monthly Cost of living in Spain for 2 people: €1050 ($1,235)
Not only is the cost of living in Spain very attractive, it is a country full of passion. It’s rich in culture and history, and full of incredibly friendly people. My time in Spain has made me love this country so much that it feels like a second home.

Want our advice? Get the dan dan noodles and steamed dumplings from this vegetarian Szechuan spot delivered before your next all-day sleep binge. And even if you don’t plan on going nocturnal anytime soon, you should still get takeout from either the East Village or West Village location of Spicy Moon the next time you want dinner at home to be exciting again.
Teranga $ $ $ $ West African  in  East Harlem ,  Harlem $$$$ 1280 5th Ave Not

If you’re looking for an uptown spot where you can get a one-bowl meal, Teranga specializes in West African-inspired grain bowls. We’re partial to their joloff bowl with salmon and black eyed peas, but you can always just mix and match ingredients to make whatever you want. Just be sure to get the fried plantains.
Toad Style $ $ $ $ Vegetarian  in  Bedford-Stuyvesant ,  Brooklyn $$$$ 93 Ralph Ave Not
