I have been following you for the last year or so (a few days after I got my Tumblr lmao) and I absolutely love your art!
I have been wanting to study your art style for a while but don't really know where to start,,,

hello. oh my god. this took forever to find. im sorry it took 2 WHOLE FUCKING MONTHS for me to respond to this but i wanted to put it off until i felt happy with my art process again, so here it is
my fall 2024 rendering tutorial! (this will be very very long)

FLATS AND WHATEVER YOU WANNA DO WITH LINES GIRL. then make sure to recolor the lineart to better match your base. trust me it helps, bold dark lines are Not your best friend when rendering. wait for that post-rendering
i start off with a doodle or a sketch, and then filling it in with flats and other details such as blush

FIGURE OUT YOUR LIGHT SOURCE. FIGURE IT OUT GIRL YOU CAN DO IT you can make it as simple as possible, make it as big as possible, dont even THINK about the details.........just make it really fucking big so you at least know where the shadows and the light goes THEN add smaller shading details LISTEN TO ME. LISTEN TO ME OKAY!!!!!!!!
my key point with this is for you to learn lighting fundamentals. it's SOOO ANNOYING but alas......they are all correct. it helps a lot.
one thing i also really want to point out is that i like creating a big shadow shape first before fixing up the little details (such as folds and whatever) because it helps me focus on the way the lighting actually works instead of tunnel vision-ing into making the shading make sense on the clothing.

contact shadows (i dont remember if thats what theyre called okay) theyre fucking ugly because im not actually thinking sorry 💔
okay so basically: contact shadows (if that's what they're called) are the spots in shading and lighting where light will NEVER hit.
shadows are still influenced by the colors and lights around it (it's why a blue shadow and a yellow shadow feel completely different, despite both being shadows) so it's not always COMPLETELY dark. BUT! there are small points in shadows where light never hits, and they're almost always super dark or pitch black.
it's hard to explain shadow and light so briefly for a tutorial, but you'll notice it when watching fundamental studies and when trying it out for yourself

YES i unclipped the multiply layer YES its ugly and terrifying but it makes coloring the multiply layer easier okay the colors merged w multiply so now it looks cool and has depth overlaying colors that actually make sense
so basically what i did was color the multiply layer that i used to shade the overall drawing
adding a band of red/orange/yellow around where the light hits, and blue where the shadows get big and wide, gives it a fake ambient occlusion effect in the way that a person would get if they stood under the sun with a clear blue sky
the colors don't have to make sense, especially because i never draw backgrounds, but coloring the shadows really help it give a sense of depth and extra subtle detail and effect that just helps make the painting look nicer
around the end, i also put in colors (in an overlay layer with a low opacity brush) that actually make sense in context of the drawing, which is the lit cigarette and the yellow eyelights mostly because none of the colors were making sense and i needed to actually make use of the lighting that DOES exist in the drawing lol

adding a muddy golden yellow pin light layer (opacity turned down to like 40-50%) to make the light colors less ugly lol
i SWEAR by the fucking pin light layer style. it's so useful and so so underrated.
i used an almost brown-ish gold color on stop of all the layers, and with the pin light layer, it helped make the bright (almost blue-ish) white colors more warm and more yellow. it just helps make things more warm (something i prefer)
i could probably show what it looks like without adjusting the layer opacity to truly show off what i mean (like in the coming section) but i sadly forgot to do that lol

make a layer on top of your drawing with this color in these ranges YES the drawing is fully merged NO don't be afraid, the base was fucking ugly anyway 💔 make this layer into an exclude/exclusion layer style TRUST turn down your exclusion layer opacity from a range of 10% to 40% literally until you're happy with the contrast and the way the color over the drawing. use your eyeballs. i know you can do it im so proud of you
this is pretty self-explanatory instruction-wise, so i'll go into why i do this instead
i really like art that seems like it has low contrast, with almost mid-gray shading and lines. i don't personally use dark and bold lines and shading, unless i find it necessary for the tone of the piece, so using this method helps lower the contrast of the art and make it look "pleasantly muddy" in the way that it's easier and softer on the eyes.
the inverted blue color also helps makes things warmer! the exclusion layer style is still a bit of a mystery to me but i really like the effect it gives, even if i don't completely get how it works lol
if you want an alternative method to this, and if you have access to it (because i primarily use sai and sai only), i absolutely encourage you to play around and experiment with gradient maps. there are so many out there you can make yourself or even get from others that just give the painting an extra amount of depth and color variation. they're SO fun.
personally, if sai2 gets a gradient map update, it's over for y'all it will literally be so over no one will be able to stop me

then i merged everything and actually adjusted the contrast back up because it was looking too muddy for me 💔 but the color adjustments are still there so all hope is not lost here's a comparison of the adjusted contrast in black and white (adjusted on the left) (newly merged layer without adjusting the contrast on the right)
as you can see, i actually turned the contrast back up (despite talking all about how i liked things with less contrast lol)
i wanted to demonstrate that doing adjustments should be done in moderation, and is why i adjust layer opacity often when making color effects you are free to play around with colors to help your style, but don't lose your initial idea and colors along the way. you still need to trust your own colors and intuition!
along with that, i just want to say that it's completely okay to change your mind mid-painting, and it's okay to make somewhat drastic changes. don't be afraid to change things you don't like or change your mind about certain aspects way later on that's basically the whole thing of this!!! don't be scared!!!

now im gonna hold your hand when i say this..........but you need to learn how to render by yourself. it seems like i can teach you but i literally can't, because rendering is different on every piece and depending on how clean your base is. i have to render A LOT because of how fucking ugly my sketches are LMAO to simplify it, think of it as obsessively cleaning up every detail you can see, but with a color picker and a clean, hard edged brush. if you have shit lineart, you don't have to redraw it cleanly over and over, just paint over it. that's basically what rendering is
THIS especially is where you need to be brave and stop being scared. like i said, i can't teach you how to render, and it's something you have to discover yourself because rendering is something that will always be personal to every single piece you make. the way you render on every piece is different. on one piece, you will barely need to render, and on another, rendering is more than half of your ENTIRE process.
don't be afraid to paint over your old art. rendering is a process that's both very perfectionist yet also very careless. find your balance and just go for it.

and then that's it……..u did it………..now yuo know how to paint and render. it's literally just layering shading and lighting knowledge until you think it makes sense and looks okay lol additional note: since i render in only one layer (you don't HAVE to do this, but it'll be harder for you…), i also made slight adjustments with the transform (and liquify, if you have it) tool to make things more proportionate. (i drew the head too big lol)

if you compare the finished piece to the final unrendered base, you can see that a LOT changed, including a bit of subtle proportion adjustment. particularly, the sleeves changed A LOT (because i really didn't like them) but it's also over all cleaner and more coherent, instead of having haphazard colors and shading just thrown about.
rendering is when you finally use all 100% of your brain to finalize and figure out where the shading should go, where to clean up your lines, where to ERASE or ADD BACK in lines, and make sure all your colors look coherent.
it's not as intimidating as it seems, i only use a hard edged brush with a little bit of color mixing and my color picker. it's like dragging and dropping colors to cover up mistakes, it's really quite fun when you get used to it i wish i could explain it clearer but it's hard to describe without visuals!

The Benoit Solès versión is definitely my second favourite version for now! It's so funny at times, and they make some very interesting metanarrative choices. This is also my favorite Roxane by far
#Cyrano de Bergerac#I talk too much#I should probably delete this later#I have such a crush on this actress? She's cute and slightly flirty and sooo charming and spirited#Perfect truly#The scene when she is in the war is like 👀 madam#Also her costume there is gorgeous#The mingling of the Rostand the writer and Cyrano the character as author/writer/performer is so interesting#The nose being an actual obvious mask works so well in that sense but also with the duality of Cyrano and what the nose is for him#Motive of shame anguish and frustration but also a sort of wall behind which to hide#An excuse for not daring on that which is most painful to lose#The fact that he takes it off when he says 'rêver' in the second act? Ugh#The way they did the cadets in that act was great too. How they almost went violent on Christian when he kept insulting Cyrano#How at some point they stop looking at Cyrano and pay more attention to Christian yet they go stand besides Cyrano as if to support him#It was a very nice background detail that really added to the feeling of them caring for Cyrano#Like how after they turned off the lights after the third act you could see Roxane and Cyrano struggling to part#their holding hands lingering#This Cyrano is at times perhaps a bit too sad for my liking in some scenes but he is very funny and at times very sweet#He has such tender fond gestures with Christian. The 'Mont donc‚ animal !' is said by him with fondness#as if touched by the fact that Christian isn't convinced by the entire thing anymore#The traveler of the moon scene is so particular in its staging. I still like the 1950 version more especially in some parts#(like how Cyrano keeps checking if the wedding is done and how funny that is done) but I actually loved it in this#The costumes are good too. Roxane's are gorgeous and I love the detail of the uniforms not being all exactly the same#The 1950 version has that too#I like the scene il act three between Cyrano and Roxane when she's telling him about Christian more in the 1950 version still#but I liked it here. I love that they did the fact that he gets anxious at first when she comments on him being jealous#And this may be a stupid detail but one of my favourite things about this version is that they made him be actually excited and tempted#by De Guiche's suggestion#The pompous acting and careless teasing attitude in general this Cyrano has showcase i think how very young he is#despite the actor not being so which is good too. I miss the scene with the girl giving him food which is I think important

At England camp, training had commenced in preparation for the World Cup. The girls back together as friendlies had been organised to help build chemistry among the team and for fans to see two final games on home soil before Australia.
As the players made their way off the pitch, LJ jogged over to wrap an arm around Lucy, doing her best to weigh her down and succeeding.
"So what you doing on the days off this weekend," LJ asked as they untied their boots, "I've got tickets to 50 Cent at the o2 if you wanna come."
Lucy hung her head back, she would do anything to go to a 50 Cent concert and sing Hate It Or Love It word for word with the man himself.
Well, almost anything. She wouldn't bail on plans with Ona.
"Oh my god I so so wish, but l'm going to a wedding in Spain this weekend," Lucy said, finding it the hardest thing in the world to turn down.
"No way, you're going to that?" Tooney piped up, "you're down so incredibly bad. Isn't that in the middle of nowhere in Spain and you're gonna go for our 1 night off?"
Lucy rolled her eyes, her go to reaction pretty much every time Tooney opened her mouth.
"Wait, down bad?" LJ said cluesly.
"Who you down bad for?" Hempo asked, joining the conversation.
Trust the two Lauren's to be the only people in women's football who hadn't heard about Lucy and Ona, both their minds away with the fairies.
"Ona," Lucy said proudly, "Batlle."
"No way!" both Lauren's said in unison.
"You idiots didn't know?" Tooney said, also shocked there was anyone unaware. "Well, I guess lucky for you, I have seen waaaay too much of their disgusting PDA."
"You have not," Lucy said, although she knew that was a lie.
"Have I not?" Tooney challenged, "because I could have sworn I saw your fingers in Ona's mou-“
"That's enough," Lucy said, throwing her damp training top right at Tooney's head.
The Lauren's were not done with their fact finding mission.
"Wait, so how long have you been going out?" LJ asked.
"Officially 2 and a half months, but seeing each other all this year really."
"Show us your cute couple photos," Hempo chimed in.
You didn't have to ask Lucy twice, she got up her favourites folder on her phone and went through a series of photos, giving context as Tooney fake gagged in the background.
"So you're going to miss 50 Cent to be in Spain for about 12 hours with Ona?" LJ said, not understanding how Lucy could ever turn down their favourite artist.
"I mean it's a bit more than 12 but is that a serious question? Did you miss the photo of her in a bikini?" Lucy said, turning her phone around to show them again, "of course I am."

As Ona arrived at the wedding she was taken aback by how beautiful it was. The brides had thought of every single detail.
Flowers were scattered everywhere, violinists in each corner of the room serenading the guests that passed.
She looked around and saw couples everywhere, feeling slightly gutted that her's wasn't here.
"Oniiiii," the younger girl heard from behind her as Jana and Leila ambushed her with hugs and kisses.
"Where's Lucy?" Leila asked, looking around.
"Yeah not like you to be carrying your own bag, where's my favourite right back?" Jana echoed.
Ona gave her age mate a glare, "her flight got delayed so she's just coming for the reception."
"She better be," Vicky Losada said, appearing out of nowhere, "I have moved heaven and earth to get another table setting at this wedding."
"Vicky!" the girls echoed, hugging the wife-to-be.
"She's coming, she's coming. She's landed now so is on the drive," Ona reassured, "and thank you sooo much."
"Caught me in my nice lover-of-love mood," Vicky said, hugging the girls before making her way back behind the scenes to gear up for the ceremony.
It was a stunning wedding. The brides looked insanely beautiful, the flower girls adorable, it was like something out of a disney movie.
Ona only wished Lucy was sat next to her rather than two obsessed with each other couples.

As the starters came out, Lucy still hadn't arrived.
Ona was avoiding looking towards the head table, terrified of the dirty look she imagined the bride was giving her, so just focused on her soup instead.
Jana, Leila and their partners made up the rest of Ona's table, who all kept her distracted and entertained as she tried to not look at her phone every 5 minutes.
Lucy - I'm at the front desk, can you come out so they'll let me drop my bags?
Ona - coming
The Spaniard jumped up, throwing her napkin on her chair as she moved as fast as she could in her sky high heels.
"Hey pretty girl"" Lucy said as she saw her girlfriend make her way towards her, the heels making her look model-esque.
Not even saying hey, overcome with wedding fever, Ona just kissed Lucy, acting as a reminder for the older girl on exactly why she had made the long journey.

"Rough trip?" Ona asked after they had quickly dumped Lucy's stuff in the room, making their way back to ensure they were seated for the main course.
"Worth it," Lucy said, giving Ona's waist a squeeze as she tried to forget about the hours spent waiting in the airport and the traffic jams on every road.
As the English girl greeted the rest of the table, everyone was nearly as excited as Ona to see her.
"Lucy!!" Vicky shouted as she made a beeline for their table.
The two knew each other from their City days but this reaction was definitely more Ona and alcohol related.
"Finally Ona can actually enjoy my wedding instead of being glued to her phone," Vicky said, bringing Lucy into a hug.
Ona smiled awkwardly as she muttered sorry. She knew she hadn't been the most present but wasn't aware it was that obvious.
"You look amazing," Lucy complimented the bride, "I'm so sorry l'm late!"
"No, no, it's ok, I am just glad you're here," Vicky said, grabbing a bottle from the centre of the table to pour Lucy a drink.
"Enjoy yourself girls, I'll catch up with you later," the bride said before turning to return to the head table.
"You look amazing too by the way," Lucy said, gripping Ona's thigh, before the younger girl took her hand and started toying with each finger while rubbing circles in her palm, so happy to finally have her girlfriend with her.
As the table's conversation changed to Spanish, Lucy drifted in and out of listening and having her own conversation with Jill, Jana's girlfriend.
"How long have you two been together then?" Jill asked, internally noting the closeness of the couple whose seats were moved so close to each other they were basically merged while their hands wouldn’t separate.
"Well we actually met at a wedding in December," Lucy started, about to get into story time.
"December?" Jana asked, suddenly showing interest in their conversation. "Why did I think it was much later than that?"
"Well we met there but we got together properly in April," Lucy explained.
"But we'll say December because who were we kidding, right?" Ona directed at Lucy, who brought up the girl's hand to give it a soft kiss.
"Wait, wait, wait," Jana said, doing mental arithmetic in her head. "So who was the girl who abandoned you in the street in February?"
Ona laughed while Lucy did not.
"Umm," Ona said through chuckles.
"No way," Jana said, then turning to Jill, "remember I told you about the girl who completely froze when she saw her ex on a date. It's Lucy!"
The English girl could feel her face heat up, hating this type of attention, especially when it was something she didn't particularly want to relive.
"So the ex was Keira?" Jill asked.
With Lucy not responding quick enough, Ona jumped in again, "yeah, it was Keira."
Lucy was a little annoyed that Ona wasn't doing more to change the subject when it was clearly making her uncomfortable, but the Spaniard had drunk one too many glasses of prosecco to really notice.
Now it was Leila's turn to work her brain.
"Oh my god! Was this the Lola thing?" Leila asked, Lucy's head spinning to Ona, thinking she'd told her friends.
"How do you know?" asked Ona, Lucy's attention now back on Leila but still not really knowing how to chime in, not in control of the conversation or situation at all.
"She is a colleague," Leila said, Lucy remembering they both currently worked at City.
Leila continued, "I overheard her discussing having dinner with Keira and you walking in. She said there was some job offer from Barcelona and that you told the club not to hire her."
"Well that's not true," Ona piped up, feeling the need to defend Lucy. "Keira told her not to take the job because it would have been weird to work with the girl she cheated on Lucy with. Why would she ever think she could work there?"
Lucy moved her hand out and away from Ona's, taking a big swig of her drink in an attempt to stop her cheeks from burning up, also annoyed at herself for staying so quiet as she should have known this was coming.
Finally, the absence of Lucy's hand in hers and the deep shade of crimson on the English girl's cheeks forced Ona to notice her change in demeanour. Better late than never, she tried to back track.
"Oh shit, sorry, I didn't mean-" Ona shook her head, unsure how she was meant to pull this back when her tipsy brain was struggling to keep up with her mouth.
"Lucy, sorry I didn't know," Leila said, at least someone managing to be a bit more composed.
"All good," Lucy said, the prosecco settling in her stomach gifting her the ability to finally respond, "all in the past."
She sounded more comfortable than she felt, but she was grateful her blunt response was enough to stop any further questions coming her way.
"So Leila, Jana said you were going to Brazil this summer?" Jill said, changing the subject and giving Lucy an excuse to sit back in her chair and try shake the embarrassment, sipping at her drink.
"Sorry," Ona said quietly to Lucy as the holidays conversation engulfed the rest of the table.
Lucy just gave her a small forced smile, pretending to be interested in the holidays conversation but really she just needed a moment to get over her dirty laundry being aired.
The Spaniard gave her a minute before she slid her hand back into Lucy's, who let their fingers intertwine again.
The English girl would struggle to be annoyed at her girlfriend for more than a couple of minutes. It wasn't even because they didn't have a lot of time together tonight, she just couldn't stay mad at that face.
But she could get her own back.

As desserts were cleared away, speeches laughed and cried at, and first dances done, the songs picked up pace and the guests started to flood the dance floor.
Ona's favourite thing about Lucy, well one of, was her dancing.
Their dances near and with each other at their last wedding was what cemented the sexual attraction, and Ona was desperate for a repeat of that tonight.
The two girls would dance with each other and with the other people on the dance floor, it turning into a salsa show with partners swapped constantly.
Obviously Lucy and Ona were repeatedly drawn back together, but whenever the Spaniard tried to up the sexy, pushing herself against Lucy or running her hands over her, she would get lightly shrugged off as the older girl spun around.
This was absolutely intentional, but as with most things tonight, Ona hadn't quite realised it yet.
Then Beso came on, the song of the summer and one the pair had danced around the kitchen to and sung along to in the car many times.
It was their song, so Ona shimmied over to Lucy, wrapping her arms around her neck and leaning in for a kiss at the chorus.
But all at once Lucy had ghosted, ducking under Ona's arms to leave them to fall to her side.
"What the hell?" Ona asked as Lucy slowly moved backwards to the rhythm of the song.
Then Ona saw the glimmer in her girlfriend's eye, she knew that look, she was being teased.
The Spaniard marched back to the English girl and put her arms back around her neck.
"What are you doing?" the younger girl asked.
"That big mouth of yours needs to be taught a lesson," Lucy whispered into her ear, voice raspy enough to make Ona's knees wobble, "so it isn't coming anywhere near mine."
With that, Lucy ducked away again, this time making her way over to the bar, intending to get only herself a drink. She wasn't on doting girlfriend duty tonight.
Ona stood there shocked for a minute, not used to not getting her way or Lucy refusing a kiss, she had no clue how to deal with it.
Meanwhile, Lucy was waiting for her drink to be made at the bar, proud of herself for channeling her annoyance and embarrassment into something much more fun, even if it wasn't as fun for Ona.
She heard the tapping of shoes before Ona leaned on the bar alongside her.
"Are you serious? You really think you can keep this up?" the younger girl said, so confident of her ability to make Lucy crack.
"Watch me," the older girl said, booping her girlfriend's nose before she picked her drink up and made her way back to the dance floor.
Lucy knew she was the life and soul of every wedding dance floor, she had been told many times, and she knew how much Ona loved her dancing, confident this would be much more difficult for the Spaniard than it would for her.
As the next songs played, Lucy made it her mission to wind her girlfriend up, dancing the Spanish way with nearly every fellow guest except for Ona.
The dancing wasn't inappropriate and didn't cross the line, but it was just risqué enough to bring out the glimmer of jealousy in Ona's eyes.
With one of Vicky's cousin's arse pushed into Lucy's front as they danced together, Ona shoed the cousin away, leaning into her girlfriend's ear.
"My feet hurt, can we go to the room now." Ona pleaded, practically hobbling now as blisters were starting to form.
"Nah, not ready yet," Lucy said, making her way over to another dance partner.
Ona fought through the pain and stuck right behind Lucy, she wasn't going to let anyone else dance with her girlfriend tonight.
Now it was the younger girl's turn to put on a show, pushing herself up and taking Lucy's hands to put them on her waist as she ground her backside into Lucy.
She was lowering and raising herself to get exactly the right friction on Lucy's front, not even having to see the English girl's face to know her head would be spinning.
And she wasn't wrong, Lucy almost bit through her lip as she struggled to control the want and desire the Spaniard was drawing out of her.
She spun the younger girl around to face her, head so gone she was basically ready to give in, but was met with a pained grimace.
Looking down at Ona's feet, she could have sworn she could see them trembling slightly.
"Oh you're really in pain," Lucy said, receiving a nod back from Ona.
"Jump on," Lucy said, turning to offer her girlfriend a piggy back.
The younger girl couldn't say no, anything to be off her feet. She jumped up and wrapped her arms and legs around Lucy as the taller girl took them round to say their goodbyes to people, Ona having to explain her footwear faux pas for the second wedding in a row.
While the piggy back was cute, with the pain no longer felt in her feet, Ona was back into horny mode, putting her mouth onto Lucy's earlobe, sucking and licking as they made their way down the corridor to their room.
The older girl couldn't stop her without dropping her, so just had to let it happen as the Spaniard tugged and sucked.
As they entered their room Lucy let Ona slide off her back and onto a chair.
She may have let her guard slip for a moment, but that guard went straight back up as soon as the carrying was done.
Holding her leg up for Lucy to come take her shoes off for her, the Spaniard was left hanging.
"Gonna brush my teeth," Lucy said, making her way to the bathroom, leaving Ona to take off her own shoes.
Her feet were red and blistered, but felt 1 million times better now they weren't in those prison-like heels.
Not stopping with the shoes, she stripped off the rest of her clothes, leaving her just in lacy red underwear.
Lucy took a deep breath as soon as she re-entered the room, knowing Ona was never going to make this easy.
The English girl did her best to ignore her half naked girlfriend, making her way over to the bed before Ona blocked her path.
"Please Lucy, I'm sorry, let me make it up to you," Ona said, easily guiding Lucy over to sit in the hotel room's arm chair, the older girl not able to hold back a smile from creeping in.
Ona quickly scurried over to the speakers, Lucy instantly recognising the intro as Beso and smiling a little wider.
The Spaniard dimmed the lights before moving slowly to the beat, back over to Lucy.
The older girl thought this was just going to be the standard apology make out session, but quickly realised Ona was gearing up for a lap dance.

"I literally punched your friend in the face less than two weeks ago," Lucy laughed.
Ona giggled too, "true, maybe we both need some lessons in party behaviour."

HI. this is the steve harrington autism post. source: i have the steve harrington style autism that makes me autistic about him
to preface this i would like to say i am working off of personal like interpretation and thru the lens of my own experience :0... also this is long lol <3 so, tl;dr, here are the autistic traits or things that are caused by autism i believe steve showcases, (except.. do read if you like <3):
sensory issues -> wearing only ever the same style of clothes, adjusting/touching his hair, (potentially) eating certain foods
stimming -> walking in place to think, fiddling with small objects, spinning/flipping/throwing objects to keep himself focussed or entertained, listening to music
scripting -> repeating phrases/words aloud and practicing what he's going to say, repeating the "plan" aloud
routine -> strict hair routine with specific steps, was in routine sports with strict rules/timing and enjoys them otherwise, driving robin to school every day without even knowing she couldn't bc it was routine, working jobs that require mindless but engaging tasks including organisation
poor grasp of social cues, especially with girls, and saying the "wrong" thing at the wrong time (including the 6 little nuggets speech, "he ate dustin's cat", confessing to robin, etc)
other people feeling like they have to tell him things he's "missed" socially (dustin telling him he likes robin, eddie telling him he likes nancy)
likes to set/follow rules and is upset when people deviate from them (i.e. max wanting to leave in s4)
out of-the-box/atypical/lateral thinking
delayed processing of thoughts/concepts/complicated subjects especially in high-intensity scenarios
picking up on small details (like background sounds in large areas or recognising something) that other people don't pick up on
fixating on certain things (hair, clothes/shoes, sports, etc)
high pain tolerance/sensory dysregulation (shaking off concussions/consistent, continued ability to function while severely injured)
inability to conceptualise his OWN mortality/safety and engaging in at risk situations with little thought other than instinct + making impulsive choices
developmental differences/delays (literally crawling backwards)
poor grades in school/not getting into college
trouble regulating emotion
poor self esteem due to feeling worthless :(
i also have adhd so i also keep this in mind a little and obv at the end of the day this is just my own interpretation + autism is a spectrum :) NOW. i will go into detail >:)
SOOO i'm not sure if steve was deliberately coded as autistic but i DO think they intentionally in one way or another coded him with a developmental disability of some kind!! which i will talk about first!!
this is shown particularly in season 2 in a couple different instances and continues into season 3 at undercurrent ..
we've discussed this a little before but i also think this is why when people like to just describe him as genuinely "dumb" it like hurts people's feelings 😭 my feelings... and that's not intentional ofc but while it is a personal insecurity of the character himself that is being ironically picked at, positively or not, by those who love him in fandom, it's also evident of something happening under the surface that people may be unaware of imo
i think he display a out of-the-box, atypical or lateral way of thinking combined with delayed processing in a way that is very typical to neurodivergent behaviour!! and more...
in season 2 we get a really nice little look into his psychology about it when nancy is reading his college admission essay (that he presumably asked her to do) and he's sitting there SO nervous and full of doubt and worked up about it he's like. basically twitching 😭
he says "it's crap i know" and nancy's like no it's not! and he's like "ugh it's not good..." sooo stressed out.. and nancy says it just needs some reorganising, which is INTERESTING!!! someone who is insecure in his own skills and inability to get his thoughts across in a succinct way + has good, complex ideas that translate poorly when he tries to explain it out loud or in text + a host of insecurities pre-rooted and explicitly about his own intellectual "failings" all = a very neurodivergent read of Steve Vs School i think
also, maybe a tangent, but: in that essay itself nancy says he starts by using one of his basketball games as a metaphor for his life, then he confuses the metaphor by comparing it to the war his grandfather was in. nancy says she doesn't see how they're connected and he's like "um. it connects because we both won" (i actually think she's being very sweet in this scene!! idg when ppl say she's mean here)
ik this wasn't the show's intention and just extrapolation but i find it really cool + interesting that there IS a war of some kind that steve could talk about that HE fought in, there is a description of high stakes combat where it's him VS them and he is the only one who now has to make this high stakes, risky choice, instead of playing it safe like he always does that relates directly to his life as a metaphor and he DOES feel connected to his grandfather in this sense...
but he can't actually talk about that. so it's basketball. and it's a slightly clunky metaphor that makes it seem like, trite, like oh silly steve, basketball isn't WAR. the essay itself is actually really well-written and evocative!! but to me signifies this inability to directly translate what he's thinking, hence it needs a little "rearranging", or maybe it's a little "all over the place" even
(also, that he crumpled up the entire essay and dismissed it entirely and fell back on nihilistic thinking and "i'll just work for my dad i guess". he already had cast disbelief upon his own ability to thrive because he feels he's not good enough :( )
his failing grades, which ended in not getting into college, tech or otherwise, is a big part of his post-highschool arc i think. to me it also shows sympathy to a problem many young neurodivergent (in every which way, btw) people face, including myself, and is potentially a really almost kind portrayal of the capability of a person not being wrapped up in their intellectual or i guess SCHOLASTIC endeavours and "achievements", and that you can be successful and "useful" to others in different ways :0
to call him dumb and really mean it (both in and out of show -_-) after all this is a certain kind of disservice i guess? like okay i think a little jokey joke is fine and also absolutely RELATING is fine (and another extension of another one of my points which is basically just "he's just like me fr" can actually = "he's JUST like me... like For Real". he's dumb in the way i'm dumb and we're both not actually dumb) but let's all be cool okayyyy
beyond school, i think he displays SOO many behaviours both characteristically and even like in his physicality that build to this beautiful conclusion... i think steve is this guy who was served up to be an initially one dimensional being who proved himself again and again to have a multitude of complexities beneath the surface :). i think his literal entire character arc is adjacent to the autistic experience LOL... perhaps...
he showcases a certain need and comfort in routine in a variety of ways, like:
being interested in sports both watching recreationally (which have timed matches and he HAS to be there on time, too) and as the hobby itself. sports are a high-routine activity with strict rules and rituals, before, after and during, as well as the extra work you have to put in otherwise!!
ESPECIALLY something like swimming, which is all about certain timing (and an individual-based sport as opposed to the team-based basketball) which he took for years!! (and actually got his cpr verification for, which you absolutely don't need to just like. be on the swim team. but it would be the "right" way to do it LOL) (also idk how it worked in 1980s fictional indiana but you need your verification a year in advance to actually do anything with it where i live!! which means he did it FROM freshman year)
driving robin to school every day, and then presumably picking her up for work sometimes too, despite not even knowing she COULDN'T drive herself because he was so dedicated to this routine (and friendship :D <3)
his hair routine!! it's SO specific (four puffs EXACTLY!!! no more no less... and when it's DAMP not WET) and i am honestly of the mind it's actually far more complex of a routine he even makes it out to be .. and i am willing to bet the multi step experience of it all is sooo long and has to be just as specific too. also extra points for it being something he does that aids in his own self-image and would make him feel like he's putting himself together.? so to speak
i think, in a way, that he owns about 9 pairs of shoes and most of them are white sports shoes with a colour accent + he's been shown to wear the colour accent that matches his outfit more often than not. which i spose is a certain kind of. ritual or routine or something.
he also shows a whole host of sensory issues/complexities/...things!!
he wears the same style of clothes like CONSTANTLY. almost everything he owns is either a soft sweater or a polo shirt, plus the same style of jacket he cycles through, all of which are well-worn (despite him being like, rich) :) the exception is that colourblock denim vest (which i think is the exception for him too because he just wanted to look like marty mcfly. which is so autistic)
i.e. wearing something that you know is comfortable over and over that doesn't give you a poor sensory experience, and continuing to buy the same style of clothing because you know it's safe to do so because he FEELS comfortable. super autistic trait. beloved prep trait as well i also just think he doesn't actually care what he wears but whatever
he also sometimes favours tight clothes and sometimes looser/baggier ones (think one day the s4 blue/white polo and jeans, the next a sweater and loose chinos) which indicates to me possible different sensory needs in the day by day...
he also wears a lot of undershirts, including with the scoops ahoy uniform (which could've been to avoid a POOR sensory experience)
he adjusts/runs his fingers through his hair and makes sure it's in a nice state at an almost compulsive level but it's also like an afterthought kind of. it could also just be a sensory thing to want to retouch his hair and play with it and follow through with the prior routine of it Looking Good + a grounding technique for sure
along with that he stims a LOT, including the thing where he has to twirl or throw ANYTHING in his hands up to and including -> a lighter, the baseball bat MIDFIGHT, a torch, a phone MIDFIGHT, his ice cream scooper, keys, his sailor hat, a banana, a random ball he found... he's also very fiddly and tends to sort of be happy sitting quietly and doing something over and over like that (this is also a trait with adhd :) )
the jobs he worked are relatively low intensity despite customer interaction and had him working with his hands plus at FV there's a lot of sorting/organisation. also "not my TAPES man" because he already sorted them and now it's ruined 😭
you tend to see him taking a little moment for himself in the background of scenes a lot, sometimes with robin as well!! he kind of just wanders off and does his own thing but in the wake of the high emotion, high adrenaline various combats in-show it makes sense, even more so if he just needs a little moment to himself to unwind
he walks/paces to think!!!
the reason he and robin only even threw up in season 3 is a) the stimulating lights he noticed that then b) over-stimulated them
this one's a little less obvious but he listens to the same kind of music and listens to it LOUDLY when he's stressed 😭 he also doesn't turn it off even if he like, technically should like on the way to fight monsters. i think he just likes music a lot tbh but also very autistic to me (and also a reason why he and eddie would be friends and/or kiss on the mouth)
one of the biggest things that sounds off to me is his social interactions :0 he is hailed as this like, ladies man but almost near constantly plummets to the earth in insane social blunder which personally i love actually (and it extends beyond these situations too!!). all the hottest boys are autistic...
i know that this is to show him just like, losing his charm...? and that he peaked in highschool or something and i do love his patheticness but it's also sooo autism. one of the reasons i actually think he's gay (lol) is his compulsive need to try and "land" a social interaction with a woman, then fail, while also not "feeling the spark" with the women he DID land and failing to see why (like his date at the basketball game). he's constantly seeking companionship but it feels like it's just out of his reach and he doesn't get it... sigh... and that it's definitely in part bc he feel he can't relate to them because HE'S so different i think. for whatever reason. multiple.
in season 3 the ENTIRE you rule/you suck board is like a beautiful shrine to this... he's honestly so funny . but like constantly awkwardly flirting and somehow saying the wrong thing every time whilst also not getting that they're Not responding to him until they like, leave, which is like. a statistical unlikelihood to me of times this can happen without something else going on in his little brain. i also like that he "invented" a makeout point bc that opens up the ability to just go um. let's go to skull rock. and the person would be like oh okay yes i am going to makeout with steve harrington.
beyond just girls or failed flirting or whatever a lot of his interactions with the kids or his other friends ping to me as having trouble with social cues and some accidental bluntness!! a FAVOURITE being -> "dart ate a cat?" "no. what? no." "what are you talking about? he ate mews" "who's mews?" "it's dustin's cat" "STEVE..." 😭😭 i love him. also him suggesting he could work his charm on the dean of the school and nancy being like... not that kind of charm.
oh another good moment for this is in the epilogue to season 3 actually like he's trying so hard to show he's seen Some movies (but only remembers the significant/stand out details) and then when robin's like can you give us a moment he's just like. Why. and does this funny little head shake movement. and robin does the steve -_- and he backs away kubrick staring... beautiful scene
he also falls victim i think to saying the wrong thing at the wrong time which is a lot of the time not necessarily his like FAULT ofc but suggests further little issues or . unalignmentd with social interaction. the entire 6 little nuggets speech to nancy to me is one of these situations (and maybe the convo in the woods with her?? idk) where he's kind of just talking and digging a hole and the other person is sort of just sitting there. it's also shown with like "like the germans?"
ALSO, a lot of the time people end up coming to him specifically and sort of like... telling him what to do/how HE feels?? and i think he just sort of goes along with it. in season 3 dustin tells him he has a crush on robin until he kind of talks himself into it and then he accidentally crash-fails for a second time by confessing to her at a sort of insane time as well (not that i think he actually had any feelings for her!!). and in season 4 eddie does the SAME with nancy which is almost spectacular.
alsoo while i think he struggles with certain social cues i also think he's very emotionally intelligent and he picks up on people's feelings easily which i guess someone could say it seems to counter? other autistic traits (silly) but to me i think. autistic people are aware of PLENTY of social cues sometimes the cue is just stupid -_- and i can read other people's emotions for sure in fact i'm almost like hyper attuned to it i just don't know how to RESPOND to it a lot of the time. whereas steve picks up on dustin's nerves at the snow ball and reassures him accordingly (and so cutely..), then picks up on robin's emotions after his confession and near-immediately course corrects after her confession in order to make her laugh!!! he was also really good with picking up on nancy's feelings and knowing exactly what to do about it/using forethought about it (like idk holding her hand when they were having sex or something to ease her nerves but also noticing she was upset at the library) when they were together at least 🤔
there are also a number of other various things very dear to me that i have no where else to include. LIKE:
his high pain tolerance!!! he's able to shake off torture, multiple concussions, various beatings with little to almost NO actual repercussions. in s4 it was actually really interesting how he was feeling bad enough to almost faint after the bats but once he was patched up he was "fine", and acted like he was fine for... the rest of the entire show. he did a backflip. high pain tolerance is an offshoot of a sensory dysregulation!!
specifically a lack of filter and moments where he goes "too far" especially when he's struggling with an emotional dysregulation of sorts, like with dustin in s4 or even with jonathan s1, but also like. the dumb faces he was making behind his date's back.
"when i was a baby, i crawled backwards"!!! autistic children can have different development i.e. their early CHILDHOOD development that can present itself in a variety of ways!! atypical to the norm crawling/walking is one of them (also matches up with robin taking 6 months longer to walk than other babies which she Also said to nancy and i think this is significant of something and i don't know what. maybe it's just funny. also stobin soulmates ofc).
to me, being the guy who mid plan debrief is the one saying "so let me get this straight" AND that he's the one asking the necessary questions to get everyone's minds (and in the 4th wall sense the literal plot) moving suggests that he both feels the need to want clarification of like, plans/instructions and what the situation is so everyone is caught up and he didn't get it wrong, and that just speaking it aloud helps cement it in his mind (which is also scripting as well i believe). also his ability to ask the RIGHT "wrong" questions suggests out of-the-box thinking as well (i would say both of these are also an adhd trait!)
his friendship with robin is honestly a point for me LOL. robin is an example of a character i do believe IS intentionally absolutely autistic coded, especially in season 4 but also 3, and his bond with her seems to be a personal one based in trust in each other and their own similarities... in season 4 when they're lamenting their love lives and say they should "just combine" is so important to me.. ugh
he's very particular and possessive about his belongings in an almost pedantic way (c'mon man not my SCOOPER! and wipe your feet before you get in my CAR and honestly even that he refuses to let max drive it fullstop, a little bit)
he also ate. SO many bananas at scoops i think for a time being it ended up being a safe food which literally happened to me as well. a very small thing but i like it
he scripts!! ie he repeats words and phrases aloud as a form of stimulation and getting himself to think or practices what he's going to say before things so he's "scripting" it (his "i'm sorry wtf am i sorry for" speech before he runs into dustin in s2)
he gets along better people who, by majority, aren't in his peer group i.e. the kids!!! and even robin and nancy were a little younger! he is very genuinely friends with the kids and it is Very Genuinely so sweet, but particularly with dustin too i found it sooo... <3
he also shows like these moments of high-intensity like silly child-like qualities of (autistic) joy LIKE when he sees dustin in scoops and they have their little lightsaber fight (which they. had practiced and made beforehand) that is just so sweet to me...
he picks up on things that other people don't!!! as the Normal Guy in a group of people he typically ends up settling in that role BUT he's multiple times picked up on small details that other people don't or DIDN'T notice, which is a neurodivergent trait!! he recognised the song in the russian recording, recalled where it came from like. right after + was the only one who heard dustin in the upside down + other things like noticing when someone's missing from a room
i also think he may be prone to like. i guess sensory overload/emotional dysregulation when he reacts what i think is appropriately to these HUGE scary scenarios but everyone else is like chill out and therefore it's inappropriate to them that he's losing his mind about it. but as time passes and he gets used to it all it lessens for sure (most evident in season 1) but there are moments where he struggles to reign in his truest reactions to things i think LOL. he is also just very dramatic tbf ☝️
his other vague neuroticisms but specifically commenting when things aren't Correct or Right or Safe including complaining about the sterility of the needle he was being injected with mid TORTURE
when he defaults to sports metaphors bc that's the easiest thing he can relate to in s2. god
100% of autistic people i talk to about this all go OH YEAH he's so autistic. tbh i think autistic people relating to a character can be enough of a diagnosis to me. peer diagnosis...
i just think so :)

My 10 Favorite Batgirls covers

You know something we never talk about much is some of the stunning covers Batgirls had (would you believe the series had over seventy-two different covers for a nineteen-issue run + Annual).
That's-- A LOT.
What happens when you get regular and virgin #1 covers that were available in other shops. Now these are my own preferences. I mean, to say the least, Batgirls covers never missed really. These are just my favs.
So are ten of my favorites plus a few honorable mentions.
Honorable Mention #1:

Batgirls #16 International Women's Day Variant by Lynne Yoshi. I just love the way everyone is framed in this with Babs being "the Batgirl" but in a past B&W motif while Cass/Steph are the present Batgirls being juxtaposed in color.

Batgirls #3 variant by Kim Jacinto. Jacinto would do a few variants for the series too, and this is my favorite one of them. Love that each had a fluidity with them but that up-close claw of Cass coming at ya is why this one is my favorite of Jacinto's Batgirls covers.

Batgirls #1 the Glass Cabinet Hobbies variant by Dan Mora. This is one of those "store" exclusive variants, and probably my favorite Batgirls cover Mora did on the series.
I love the poses Cass/Steph have here, along with Bab's silhouette. I just LOVE the yellow dips down and to the right even making a rather striking cover. If anything negative I wish Babs was bigger and Dick was taken out of this cover altogether. Still love Bruce on the right though.

#7 Batgirls #1 (though I forget which store had this exclusive) variant by Babs Tarr. If there's one thing I do enjoy about Burnside Batgirl it is the way Tarr drew Steph in it. Just captured that fun attitude perfectly. Also, love the first "official" drawing of her Cass.
I also love the homage to a famous Batman cover but the personalities of each Batgirl stand out in this one. Plus the pink just makes this one stand out and be so striking.

Batgirls #14 variant 1:25 cover by Dan Hipp. Again, the pink is a nice striking contrast but Hipp one-ups it with the little details sprinkled throughout this cover. The easter eggs sprinkled in are PERFECTION here. Probably the best "layered" cover with so much behind it.

#5 Batgirls #18 AAPI variant cover by Crystal Kung. The second of the two AAPI covers Cass got in the series, I love the colors in this one along with the pose Kung gives Cass here. There's that gremlin nature of Cass I love here.
Along with just the wash the background gets further back. I also love the secondary color Kung gives Cass's cape to make it stand out more.

#4 Batgirls #17 cover by Jorge Corona. My favorite cover of the series with all three Batgirls in them. I love how Corona gets the personalities of the three in here while also the starry background along with the Clocktower. Sooo good.

Batgirls #14 cover by Jorge Corona. The best issue of the entire series and the peak for me of Corona as well with his covers.
Just the somber mood of the cover sets the tone alone. I also LOVE the way Corona has Cass and Steph's capes here. The way each pop sells it all.
So if that's my #2, what can be my #1?
Well... something that just uplifts me anytime I look at it. Something you'd probably not truly expect.

Batgirls #6 AAPI Heritage Month variant by Audrey Mok. There's just something every time that I look at this cover that fills me with a warm glee.
I adore Mok's use of Cass here and the way the traffic around her lights a part of her up. I adore the pose as well that mid-grapple swing too.
I love the "mini story" this one tells too. Just everything about this cover is perfection to me.

literally just me talking about edit stuff because im in a mood

these r what i would call like my base level of ingame edits (i dont reallyyyyyy count my cas screenshots as edits unless i spend an actual amount of time actually working on them rather than my usual blur+chromatic aberration+sharpen combo) theres usually very little? or like no actual basis in the characters "canon" or lore like its just done to make them look nice. right. or like its fun lighting practise for me really. theyre usually pretty simple in execution like in the two examples there its just plain yellow background for sunny and the neon cross for vin so i have to put a little extra oomf into it because the backgrounds are like not super detailed so theres less of an "interest" factor from that so the sims themselves have to look REALLY good to make up for it. the ones i end up happy with though usually look really dynamic so it balances out

so these are more sort of abstract edits to me bc they have a basis in the oc lore or themes or whatever and most of my ocs have at least one or two visual markers (in the examples lucari or even just ari specifically gets a fair amount of celestial/sky imagery, i handled the colours here a bit sloppily but its meant to be blue and purple which are ari and luca's text colours, heiya's emphasis being on her muscles and scars and the clouded solar eclipse, redacted gets a lot of water/reflective surfaces/birds/rainbow flares?? and also lightning but that isnt being used in this specific one and sunny gets a fair amount of fire/smoke stuff as well as emphasis on primary colours like his more blue toned edits r usually in his darker stages of his life while warmer yellows means more positive stuff, red usually is just for uhhh violence oriented stuff) and like none of these are Actually happening. right. redacted isnt actually ever in that position with that era of hair in the water with the birds and sunny was set on fire at 13 not as an adult and they certainly never had a portrait of his family like that. but its symbolic, it means Something even if you as the viewer doesnt know it yet 😅 or ever aha

OKAY LOL I PRESSED POST BY ACCIDENT LOL but these are my full lore edits or something likr theyre totally rooted in the background of the ocs. like these are scenes from their lives for real. obviously i fiddle with lighting angle composition a tinyyyy bit to make for a more pleasing or dynamic image at the end but if my ocs all got dedicated like. movies or shows these would be ripped straight from the scene. i take creative liberties with some stuff but in essence these could be story posts (like the 3rd example with idris/redacted is literally in the story itself in one of the posts) the difference is usually amount of images in the post and orientation of said image/s. to me an edit stops being an edit when it has more than likeeeeee 4 images and then i will usually keep that bulk all in landscape or maybe one as portrait for emphasis. edits will be 4 or less and mostly in portrait because i want the less images to take up more room on the dash. the backgrounds for these will usually be way more complex like ill build a mini set or use existing sets for each one. i just think that ingame edits have a lot more capability than you might think (u dont have to go into blender for every little thing promise 🙌🏼) its just like. u can do a lot with this game i swearrrrrr just treat it like an art medium. im serious
ALSO the song almost always is sooo relevant to the edit i swear its not enough to sound good. i have to be unwell about it as well and it has to make sense with what im showing u

Mina's parents Intro

Sooo... you might be wondering... who are these characters, and where are their heads?
Well, the answer to those and many other questions is under the cut.
[Background taken from Ed Edd n Eddy.]
When it comes to Ed Edd n Eddy we have never seen any of the parents entirerly, the most we've seen was Ed's mom from the neck down. So, I've only designed Mina's parents from the neck down.
It's quite silly but I think it also adds a sense of mystery to it. Not even I know what their faces look like, because I've never thought of it.
I'm not gonna give them any names either, I'm just gonna call them "Mina's mom" and "Mina's dad".
I like to stay true to the show for stuff like this, in the same way Mina doesn't have a last name because the kids in the show don't have them either. They mostly never mentioned this stuff because the kids are the main focus, but I still find it interesting.
I'll give ya some info about her parents, and you can fill in the blanks yourself if you want.
Mina's mom is basically the most known parent in the entire show because Mina keeps mentioning her just as much as Eddy mention's his brother. Although, while Eddy keeps talking about his brother in a good light which we eventually find out isn't true, Mina keeps talking about her mom in a more bad light, but as the show goes on we'd slowly catch onto the fact that Mina's mom is an incredibly nice person.
I like to imagine that it's the little details that give it away, like Mina's lunch having her name written on it with hearts around it, which her mom made.
Mina's mom genuinely loves Mina, but she's very concerned about her as well. I mean a child spending the entire day in front of the TV really isn't a healthy hobby.
Which is why she keeps tyring to get her interested in different stuff to get her out of the house more often, which is difficult considering how difficult Mina is.
And this leads to the famous "Mina's mom getting mad at Mina" which Mina tries to avoid at all costs.
It isn't the yelling and messy type of mad, but more of the quiet type. Mina's mom can be genuienly terrifying when she's just looking at her in silence.
And Mina loves her mom as well. But currently she's far too grumpy to admit it.
As for her mom's personality besides being a nice person... I'll just say that she's the kind of person that walks through an IKEA for the entire day carrying 5 bags and she's still enthusiastic and full of energy after it.
Also, I've said it before but she works at a cosmetics shop.
Also, another important thing is that Mina's mom and Jonny's mom are bff's, so that's why Mina and Jonny have to spend a lot of time together (besides because they're cousins). I imagine that the two families often have lunch together or that they celebrate Christmas together, that kinda stuff.
And, finally, onto Mina's dad.
A very mysterious figure as he'd maybe be mentioned once or twice in the show by Mina.
Him and Mina basically always have silent solidarity going on. Whenever he gets home Mina moves over on the couch so that he can watch TV with her, without saying a word to one another which they prefer.
He's known as the electrical wizard of the culdesac, the other neighboors always call him to fix stuff for them. (mostly because they know he'd do it for free)
He works at an electrical shop, where they sell parts for things but also stuff like toasters, washing mashines etc.
As for their marriage It's basically those tall and short person relationship dynamics. :'D
I also keep imagining him buying flowers for her and cute little gestures like that.
I can also imagine that the other adults in the culdesac are secretly jealous of them...
Like how can someone have a such nicely put together life without a million problems?
Behind their backs they probably gossip about how they're faking it and that there's something bad going on behind the curtains, which makes Jonny's family the only one that's truly loyal to them.
And that's about it! I really like the designs I came up with. If anyone can pinpoint what I did with them you'll get a gold star. >:]

oooooo how exciting -- let's take two options here -- and rip, this will be spoiler central --
Astarion/redeemed!Dark Urge
this shit feels like how the game was meant to be played. I mean first of all just on pure amount of content, the Astarion romance blows everyone else out of the water, and the integration with a durge who's trying to get his shit together is suPREMEly good. It's fine I guess when you're just doing murdelation blood blah status, but the additional effort caused by just trying to get control of yourself is fascinating, especially when Astarion is clearly watching and going, hmm.
You can play a redemption however you want -- really trying to push into Good alignment, just trying to be neutrally in control of yourself, still flat-out a shithead but you don't want to be a shithead for daddy anymore, whatever -- but my favorite is a guy who's just trying to put one foot in front of the other, and looks at his worst blood-black impulses and goes okay, well not THAT obviously, so let's try to do the opposite. Contrary to some players' belief, it is SO easy to get Astarion to 100% loveydove romance while still being A Good Guy; you just have to not be an idiot, lol. Durge choosing to listen and having the wis/cha/int score to see through Astarion's bluster and see what he's actually saying is such a gift; Astarion carefully watching Durge not be as untrustworthy as he assumed literally everyone was, and thinking maybe I could... -- girl, that shit is catnip. Yum.
I also have a boner for the way that Astarion comes from this terrifying torture background and Durge is a terrifying torturer and could probably detail everything that Cazador did to him and make it worse -- but he's choosing not to, and it is an active and daily choice. Fits so nicely with Astarion being, yeah, a moderately amoral vampire, but he can watch that and go 'well, maybe I don't need to... be the worst version of myself...' Not that he turns into a paladin or some shit like that, but by the time you get to him in the ritual and you have to explain to him in baby steps that 'yo idiot, if you turn into supervamp you'll be Cazador but worse' -- seriously, it's like he never pays attention to literary tropes -- it's sOOO satisfying when he believes you, and backs off, and then when it's your turn to defy Bhaal it's like -- hell yes, not echoing the mistakes of our fathers! Freedom! And then they have like lots of sex about it or whatever. (I like the 'go to the Underdark with the spawn' ending; presumably we have a little vamp castle where boinking occurs.)
but to take it a different direction, a quick jaunt into:
Ascended!Astarion/Dark Justiciar!Shadowheart
and the reason I like this is that playing as the Origin characters fucking suuuuucks because they get ripped down blandly into the version of themselves who could react like a boring blank-slate Tav, because "player freedom is so important" [rolls eyes, jerking off motion]. More than that, though, they aren't allowed to really go through their own journeys, because no one listens to them. The job of the PC is to fix everyone else's personal sidequests -- none of the friends give a shit about your own. (Tav doesn't even have a problem, it's hysterical. At least Durge has something going on people pay attention to.)
so with that said, Astarion has no one to genuinely dissuade him against Ascending. I mean, Gale and Lae'zel aren't exactly for it, but none of them actually listen and talk him through the thought process the way a real PC can. So what's to stop him from Ascending? It's the obvious best option.
and then, relatedly, if you have a scared almost-feral Astarion who's desperate to get power however he can -- if he discovers that his hot cleric friend is a cleric of Shar, and she can do some hella dangerous shit and become an even stronger bodyguard? Uh, yes please. What does he care if the world rolls to darkness? He's got darkness plans of his own. And poor Shart then has no one actually giving a shit about her own problems -- why would a still-evil-track Astarion coach her into not sucking? They can be cunty wine drinkers together, never actually learning lessons and spiraling down into shitholery together. Does Astarion actually want to fuck her? What does it matter. They'll rule Baldur's Gate above and below. The fight can come later.
anyway, origin characters making each other worse is fascinating and also hysterical. shithead4shithead, amen.

10. what inspired this character’s creation? I was watching Buffy and spun off of a similar idea where in the show, there's this demon who can bestow people with the powers of a vengeance demon, which made me go oh hey thats like a warlock patron! The concept was from like 2021 when I was both watching critical role daily and watching buffy with Liv so really everything I thought about was Liv, buffy the vampire slayer, and critical role campaign 2.
13. what are some motifs you associate with them? did you intentionally bring in those motifs, or did it happen over time?
Above all else, love. Abandoning home, abandoning self, in the pursuit of love, in the pursuit of *something* more than what currently is emptiness. When love becomes a pursuit of vengeance (uwu). Also the general feywild motifs reflecting in Moxie, that bright pretty colours hide dangerous insides and darkness. These were definitely intentional, and I think in fleshing out certain parts of backstory that I hadn't wholly filled in, I managed to strengthen those motifs even more. 40. if you had to remake this character right now, how would you change them?’
I think I would have leaned more into Charlatan background instead of focusing so much on what Moxie was doing before The Horrors. It completely fits what she was up to in her pre-ayla years, and the bonuses from it would have been nice from it. That's one of the parts I didn't fully write out, just a general idea, and built it up more later BECAUSE she was so instantly the queen of white lies. and im like yeah that actually makes perfect sense here.
51. what element of their backstory are you proudest of?
Childhood and how it ties into overall Exandria lore for sure. I was sooo damn pleased with myself from managing to connect a couple different area specific things to Moxie, and how that ties into her family being Like That and her leaving. It hasn't fully come up yet but I personally do enjoy it all for my own sense of place for my character in the world.
59. what’s an element of their philosophy that you disagree with?
Chase Pleasure, Avoid Pain
I'm just better at sitting with and feeling and working through painful things. And in general, avoiding shit constantly is annoying to me. I like to be silly and chaotic, but I'm not chaotic enough to make life decisions and big things based on what's the next feel good thing and how can I avoid the Bad Shit indefinitely. Dealing with the negatives head on is better in the long run.
