Character Characterization in Ghost Biology is Weird AU

I think I forgot to mention this because it's such a given to how I write Danny but Danny is trans; other traits I write, he has chronic pain, ADD and i write him stimming which can be either or both ADD/autistic things (and probably other things idk I'm no expert) i have ADD myself so I'm writing my experience, I'm not autistic to my knowledge so all I've deliberately done when writing him is give him stims; his stims aren't always healthy, he bites as a stim and tends to bite his hands or tail (very hard, especially when ghost. He will make himself bleed) but Sam or Tucker can usually redirect him to something else like a pillow or whatever; he also stops himself from hand flapping (usually) but he does do it; and shoves his hands against his ears and grinds his teeth sometimes when stressed (he's always grinding his teeth in ghost fights); oh right and he has a death scar as a ghost that he feels in both forms (Lichtenberg spirals/fractals from his hand across his chest to his opposite leg and foot)

in this AU I've given Danny two (2) obsessions as a teen, Space and Control; i love me some protection obsession Danny don't get me wrong I just went with this for this AU to make Vlad and Danny better foils because

Vlad has (3) obsessions in this AU Research and Control and Family

Vlad has only shown up once so far, alas, but he is running around doing things

Danielle's initial Obsession is Family, during the events of Kindred Spirits she develops a Control Obsession; I intend for her to keep two Obsessions until adulthood

once Danny has his baby his ghost side matures to adult and he starts developing a new obsession; right now I'm not set on what it is. It might be protection or it might be something else

Danny and his baby (Baby Phantom until they awaken/are born and Danny names them Neil) are both ice core; Vlad is fire core; Danni is a wind core

I think I mentioned it before but anyone that lives in Amity Park might be liminal. To elaborate, if they live within Danny's haunt (amity park and parts of elmerton and the rural outskirts) and are claimed by Danny then they WILL be liminal to some extent. If someone lives in Amity Park (Danny's Haunt specifically) but hasn't been claimed by Danny they can still become liminal due to ectoplasm levels but it's just a chance thing. in the case of Danny claiming them, the haunt is literally infusing itself into them to give itself more influence. It's entirely subconscious and beyond Danny's control (the haunts are the ghosts in this au, sort of, and haunts act as a kind of immune system)

So 'Team Phantom' are all liminal.

The only person that is aware of their liminality as of the beginning of this AU is Valerie Gray. She's liminal enough that she's starting to develop an obsession which does not necessarily mean a liminal person has a core, but they probably do; Valerie is liminal enough she's starting to infuse her dad's apartment with her energies during sophomore year; Danny cedes her dad's apartment (a bigger area than just the apartment or the complex, a lot of territory for someone without a core but not enough to make Valerie drain herself sick) to her and it starts the process of becoming her haunt; it's a much much slower process than it was for Danny for multiple reasons

Ghosts have family groups called Fraids (which Danny doesn't really know about because he has no ghost parents to teach him these things) and Fraids consist of Family-By-Birth, Family-By-Choice, Family-By-Theft and Family-By-Nest; I think the first two are fairly self explanatory; i'm also p sure the phandom has a better grasp of Family-By-Theft than I do;

Family-By-Nest is the term I'm using for ghosts that join together to raise children, it's a very specific thing that happens when a new ghost is born/awakens; when the new core is ready it reaches outside of itself seeking protection and care, any one that responds by offering and accepting this becomes bound to the baby and to a lesser extent anyone else that accepted the baby; in Danny and Neil's specific case, Danny had been storing a LOT of extra power (since y'know he's OP like that) and it gave all of his fellow parents-by-nest their own cores once the process finished.

Danny's fellow parents-by-nest are Sam, Tucker, Jazz, Danielle, Valerie and Dash

Jazz and Danielle are family. Entirely and totally absolutely platonic siblings. Jazz family-by-birth and Danielle family-by-theft.

Danny is polyamorous (prefers polyam over poly) and bi and ace (not sex repulsed, he likes romance and making out best but is cool with other more intense stuff); his partners (in something like a 'normal' dating relationship) are Sam and Dash (they are with Danny only not with each other); they don't have a label for their thing but Tucker is aro/ace and if he knew the term would be cool being called Sam and Danny's queer platonic partner (QPP); Valerie and Danny have been hate-flirting for years, I'm just calling it pitch, sorry. Val and Danny are pitch, they just have no idea what the feelings are or mean up until Rivalry [on AO3 here] and even then only Valerie gets something like an explanation of what it is.

And I suppose I'll end with a description of Neil. They're half ghost like Dad, when human they have red hair and purple eyes (because it's not cloning it's recombination of DNA and to simplify irl red hair is the most recessive and I decided purple eyes are as/more recessive than green, ergo Danny carries those genes even if they don't express for him); when first born they have pale blue skin, pointed ears green hair and (glowing) green eyes. After meeting Frostbite they imprint on him as family-by-choice and after that when ghost they get lil horns and their arm gets spooky translucent green with charred bones in it

Oh spirits i haven't even described adult!Danny eff. Okay this is what I'll end with (i hope)

This change happens literally when what's left of the energy he instinctively collected and then pushed into family-by-nest and Neil returns to him

Human he's as tall as Jack (6'9") and built like a long distance runner. He looks like an adult in their mid twenties (before he still looked just as 14 as he had when he died);

Ghost, when he's got legs he's 7' when he's got a tail he gets to be a long noodle boi as a treat (like, absurdly long if he had a mane of hair ppl would totally call him a dragon like an eastern style one) I'm imagining like 30ft tail but the exact length isn't important, him long boi is what important;

he's got icy blue skin, pointed ears now, and a forked tongue (he's had lil fangs as a teen and has bigger fangs now) the fangs are blunted not sharp, he has to use force to break skin can't do that on accident or well he can but it's not because he forgot his fangs are sharp it's because he did it to himself and his pain tolerance is stupid high and he didn't notice how much force he was using; he's never going to be that distracted with a partner to accidentally bite Sam or Dash and it's not an accident with Val

His Phantom jumpsuit/hazmat suit changed, maybe lil bit more white, now with neon green accents and a neon green gear circling the D P logo with (not being worn as goggles but up in his hair mimicking horns) Fenton style goggles with purple lenses

Once he learns ghost parents are supposed to have lil pouches like marsupials or seahorses (Ember tell him in Phantom's Lullaby [on AO3 here]) he manages to give himself one (it's not shape shifting tho it's a permanent change to his 'default' body)

Basically his adult body, both forms, was subconsciously influenced by what he thinks dads are: big, bright/colorful, and loud; though as a human the most he could do was be big (and accidentally be loud too r i p)

Danny Phantom Episode 9 Reaction

Okay, I loved this episode so much that I stimmed multiple times and almost cried aaaaaaaaaaaa! I was excited for the episode after I saw the thumbnail of Jaz and Danny Phantom.

Yeah, Danny, why did you detransform instead of chasing after the ghost? That’s a valid question.

*sees the title screen* WHAT ON EARTH IS THAT THING? (turns out to be a “therapist”) Ah, I immediately don’t trust her and I wonder why.

She’s sapping their negative energy or something, right? Oh wait, I was correct!

JAZ SAW DANNY HECK YES??? Oh, she doesn’t realize it’s him yet.

SHE DEFINITELY SAW HIM TRANSFORM! I stimmed so much and made squeaking sounds. (Sorry, I’m just very very excited and Jaz is the one I want to know about it most, when most people would probably want the parents to know more.)

I love the entirety of the ending scenes involving Danny and Jaz!!! I wanted them to hug, but I also like how Jaz handled it and decided “he can tell me when he’s ready”. ;w;

Okay, one thing I ADORE about this show is how they portray the “big sister”. Every other show I’ve watched have them as either total jerks or completely oblivious dummies, especially in animation. Meanwhile, Jaz and Danny's relationship is REALISTIC. Or at least in my experience. Like, they tease each other a lot, yet it’s still apparent that love and care about each other. <3 (Of course, that’s not everyone’s experience, I just haven’t seen it represented.) I just think that’s a really cool touch I haven’t seen anywhere else.

I will say this is my favorite episode so far (if you couldn’t tell by the larger amount of text) and probably one I’ll rewatch if I have time before my free month runs out.

April 10th: How important is representation to you? Is the representation that is out there generally good or bad? What is your favorite piece of representation? What you like to see more of in autism representation? What would you like to see less of?

representation is really important to us and we’ll end up going on a couple long rants about some of our favorites (under the cut) because we can, it’ll be real messy because theres at least 3 of us talking and im just about positive that people were blurry when writing shit out so sorry about that but that’s just how it is

for us, representation enables us to see people like us in stories. the other thing for us, not specific to autistic representation, is just that we tend to enjoy more diverse stories more? maybe we’ve just had good luck but we’ve found that stories with characters who are members of marginalized groups (whether the story itself is diverse or not) tend to be better written. maybe it’s because we generally prioritize ownvoices works, idk.

so first i wanted to take a look at some numbers regarding autistic characters we’re familiar with (yes we know there are more, we just have a focus on books in our brain) and we started with books & comics and got some interesting numbers that we weren’t expecting! we haven’t read all these books yet so there are some gaps in the information.

of the 10 characters (from 8 books and 1 webcomic):

5 are female, 4 are male, and 1 is nonbinary.  2 are black, 2 are white, 1 is mixed (surinamese/dutch), 1 is mixed (vietnamese/irish), 1 is mixed (fictional races). 9 (possibly all 10) are main characters 6 are over 21, 2 are under 12 (9 and 11), 1 is 16, 1 is 18 3 are straight, 3 are gay/lesbian, 1 is bi.

I think that’s very cool actually! we would like to see more trans autistic characters (the only trans character out of the 10 seems to be the 1 nonbinary character) for sure, and more explicitly canon autistic characters in general. i’d like to see less “autism representation” that isn’t actually canon (even though we do love some of the characters, if you have to go find an interview with a producer where they say probably in order to find out the character’s autistic, it’s not canon).

now time for our specialized little rambles!

so i’m going to start with another quick explanation of fictives again because it’s extremely relevant right now.

again, a system is multiple people in one body. individuals within a system are system members (there are many different terms, that’s what we prefer). fictives are system members who are/are based on/are versions of characters

i’m a fictive of danny becket from the webcomic sharp zero and honestly we all love sharp zero! it’s extra fun now because it’s one of the special interests we all share and it’s my source and i’m double autistic (system as a whole is autistic, and I was autistic to begin with) so i now have this intense special interest surrounding... myself??? anyway, sharp zero is great because

sharp zero doesn’t go “the autism one is pure and innocent <3″ sharp zero goes “the autism one drags a corpse through a magic portal to perform a ritual to resurrect him” and that’s pretty cool

I’m a fictive of Julian from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and I’m one of the favorite cases of representation for most of the system, which is very interesting for me. In the show, it’s a case of unnamed disorder, which my parents tried to ‘fix’ via genetic engineering. I specifically matter to the system because of one particular parallel.

When I was a child, my parents noticed me ‘falling behind’ and decided to ‘fix’ me, and then proceeded to hide that information from me. When I was 15, I found out what they’d done, and began going by a different name.

When the body was a child, we were going to a neurologist for other reasons, and the parents were told that we’re most likely autistic but to not get a diagnosis ‘unless it gets in the way’. They proceeded to hide that information from us. When we were 15, we found out about that. Around the same time, the old host came out as trans and began using a different name.

That parallel is very important to most of our system members, especially the old host.

Despite it never being stated that I’m autistic, and it being implied that my parents may have succeeded in their attempt to ‘fix’ me, it’s clear from my behaviour that they didn’t. Even if they had, it was clearly shown that what they did was illegal and wrong, and that it did direct harm to me. But every autistic person we’ve met who has watched DS9 has taken one look at me and said something along the lines of that man’s a whole autism.

I’m shown having clear interpersonal issues, including trouble with social cues and clear implications that I never had friends before arriving on DS9. My own parents thought a half-finished hologram with no personality who didn’t recognize them was me.

I think that kind of representation is important. The kind where things did go wrong, where there has been suffering and loneliness, and it takes time, but a support system does get found.

anyway, a while back we started lookin’ for books with autistic rep by autistic authors and the first one we found was on the edge of gone by corinne duyvis, and we’ll always have a soft spot for it cuz it’s really good and it was the first one we got

How do they put themselves to bed at night (reading, singing, thinking?)

Chris winds down by college by listening to music a lot, while playing on his computer and stimming. Early Chris was tired a LOT as his body recovered from extended severe neglect and trauma and so when he DID go to bed he fell asleep easily, but he naturally runs on six or so hours of sleep and will often still be up early.

How easy is it to earn their mistrust?

Not very. He is naturally very forgiving and tends to assume he misunderstood or otherwise try to give the person the benefit of the doubt. Conditioning also means that he struggles to see being hurt as wrong.

Pretend to understand and then make himself scarce if someone keeps pushing for certainty.

They don’t like being caught without a quick answer or understanding of the problem. They dislike public speaking and are easily embarrassed by themself if they stumble or stammer.

Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth?

Unpleasant truth. They'd rather not be part of a comfortable lie at all. Because those lies are never comfortable for everyone.

If they were asked to explain the difference between romantic and platonic or familial love, how would they do so?

"Hm. F-familial... I would d-die for Mina, without question. I w-would give up anyth-thing, if she needed me, too. I l-love her in ways that feel helpless sometimes, like I d-don't have the slightest control over it. She's th-the center of my world. They b-both are. The world stops spinning without them. Do they have a system for remembering names, long lists of numbers, things that need to go in a certain order (like anagrams, putting things to melodies, etc)? 

Nope! And he is terrible at names. So you can see he could probably use the help.

Kauri's self-destruction is one of the hardest aspects of him to write for me, and can be tough. It's hard when you're internally going STOP DOING THIS PEOPLE LOVE YOU

can u please teach me about autism?

think of all your senses as knobs. you have your volume control (hearing), the screen brightness (seeing and processing, dimmer the screen the slower to process), audio input (your voice), sensitivity (touch) and sensory (touch, taste, hearing, even seeing). you also have constant input from your brain.

thats an non autistic person. a non autistic person generally has control over these knobs, with the ability to ignore them and react to sensory input easily enough.

autistic people like myself DO have control over the knobs, but its much harder. because turning up the brightness on your screen might turn the volume down, and lowering your sensitivity might suddenly increase volume. sometimes everything is switched off except for one thing, and another time everything is on except for the one thing you need most at that moment.

thats on a normal day.

when you are stressed its even harder to control the knobs. non autistic people do have harder time controlling them when they get stressed (ie, reacting badly to repetitive sounds, headaches from bright colors). but so do autistic people.

so as a result we stim. stimming is actions that help us get our knobs under control although non autistic people don’t do them often. rocking back and forth, flicking wrists, playing with the hem of your shirt, dropping heavy things on your feet, meticulously cleaning and attention to detail and yes, figet spinners and cubes. All of these are forms of stimming, but the list is huge.

now imagine interacting with other people. non autistic people tend to see people’s knobs and where theyre at, like picking up on social cues and mixroexpressions. autistic people can either be very good at this or need to learn how to do this (i being one of them, and humans are weird)

we also can have fixed interests on one or many things. for example, my special intrests are danny phantom and voltron, and writing fanfic for both of them. i have a friend who loves reading any book she can get her hands on. another who loves flying planes and studying physics. they can be various and ranging from all sorts of subjects.

we also have strict rituals and schedules. some are able to bend their schedules but others need warnings ahead of time. rituals include putting your shoes on before your pants, brushing your teeth after breakfast, taking a certain way to work that doesn’t let the sun shine in your face.

schedules are generally basic, with getting off of work at one pm and driving home to have free time before cleaning your house and making some dinner. but if it gets interrupted, like if a friend visits unexpectedly, it reschedules our whole perfect system and stresses us out.

autism is also a spectrum. someones experience may be completely different from mine. someone can struggle with knobs but not have rituals or a firm schedule. some stim but have control over their knobs.

Hello! Are you still doing that fic ask meme? If so, could I please ask 9, 10 (bless your soul for choosing this rarepair), and 13 for ISSH! So, so much love for this fic! It's quite literally one of my fav fallout fics ever.

I totally am! Frankly, fanfic authors love the opportunity to gush about their work and I am no exception to this rule! 

Okay so 9: Are there alternate versions of Insert Something? The short answer is yes! The long one is that I have two that I currently bat around in my head when a current chapter is being a pain or I’m stuck on where to go next. 

The first au fic is one where after the Outcasts kill everyone in Vault 101 and Deacon or Jack as he’s known then goes to Sarah Lyons and demands to know who it was, instead of her basically telling Jack to get f*cked, she instead goes with her gut reaction to the situation and not her ‘Elder Lyons’ reaction she actually had, and tells Jack everything he needs to know. Helping him find justice because even for all the things she believes in regards to the Brotherhood what the Outcasts did was wrong on so many levels. 

So Jack never leaves the Captial Wasteland and he and Sarah pursue a stronger relationship with each other and Jack end up integrating into the Brotherhood, helping change them in the way that he thinks they should be, a help to the Captial and its people, rather than a burden. He sort ends up Second to Sarah’s Elder. Then she’s killed as per canon, and instead of choosing Maxon to lead them, the Brotherhood senior officers choose Jack. Fast forward to Danse’s company going to the Commonwealth (along with Maxon), but instead of a ‘let’s find and horde all the tech we can’, Jack’s Brotherhood has changed enough to want to help/explore what’s left of America. 

Then they get that Insitute signal and communicate back to the Captial. Jack is reluctant to just go in with the Prydwen, guns blazing, like Maxon does in canon, he doesn’t want to start a war if they can avoid it. So he takes a team to the Commonwealth to assess the situation personally and whether they need to get more involved than just a meet and great with the citizens of the Commonwealth. Rest is then history from there. Still a Nick/Deacon fic, just more politics and negotiations and less Railroad sneaking around. 

Second au is more or less the same as the current fic, only instead of things like stims and RadAway, plasma rifles and laser pistols, and power armour, the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout is full of magic. Bombs still fell, wiped out people, but instead of nuclear power and atoms, there’s a gut of magic harness from the natural world that was turned into a weapon and then that was used in the Great War. So things like ghouls and feral still exist, but not as irradiated creatures, but things twisted by magic turned so far from its original purpose that it’s not a help, but a harm.

The regular citizens of the Wasteland have primitive magic compared to what the Old-World once wielded, enough to help crops grow and heal injury and syphon off poisonous magic, but people like Deacon/Jack who grew in a Vault or are a part of the Brotherhood or Enclave have a greater control and command of magic, know spells that were lost to those regular people through the destruction of the war. 

The Institue having the greatest command of magic, even so far as to invent new ways of using it and creating golems. Creatures of dirt and clay animated by magic. They were primitive at first, looking barely human, then they began to progress, allowing the transfer of memories of deceased humans to them (Nick) to live again and ultimately becoming so sophisticated that there is virtually no way to tell the difference between them and humans. 

So yeah, those are my au’s.

Now for 10: Why this pairing? Well, to be honest, when I first started plotting this fic in my head it was going to be Deacon/MacCready, because Mac is just so adorable and there’s a history there with MacCready knowing The Lone Wanderer -which will come up in the actual fic. But after writing the first chapter and realizing that it wasn’t just going to be a 15k one-shot, but something a little longer than that (didn’t think it’d get THIS long, though. LOL) I realized that wasn’t going to work for me with what I had planned. So then I thought about the most compatible person, the one that would challenge Deacon and his Lone Wanderer past, who could be an equal, and the answer was obvious: Nick Valentine. Like that Maroon 5 song says, “It was always you; can’t believe I could not see it all this time! It was always you!” From there it just worked so well that it seemed like it was meant to be. Deacon/Nick forever. :D

Lastly, lucky number 13: What music? When I write I listen to a mix of lore friendly music. I love swing and old school jazz and old country/folk music from the 20′s to the 50′s. That was already my wheelhouse, so I added the FO4, soundtrack to my FO3 and FO:NV playlist, along with the great songs on the WRVR mod, and my own selection including: The Andrew Sisters, Bing Crosby, Hank Snow, Patsy Cline, Ray Charles, Danny Kaye, Tom T. Hall, Billie Holiday, Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and various show tunes from movies of that era: ie) Music Man. As well as four different John Philip Sousa band numbers: ‘The Washington Post’ (obviously, since Deacon whistles it all the time), ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever’, ‘Manhattan Beach’, and ‘Semper Fi’. (I’m not American, but I just love the complexity and brilliance of those songs and they’re catchy as all get out.)
