doing an ascension astarion route because i desire the l o r e and to connect/compare to ravenloft lore because its fun and anyways godd some of the lines astarion says is like prime darklord material

spoilering it below for both ravenloft and bg3 spoilers but also a ramble

also, it l o n g so be double warned!!

considering how many darklords we have, so many of them have done seemingly less depraved things than cazador/ascended astarion are doing.. and some darklords become darklords because they 'took over' a heinous act and committed it themselves.. the fact that of all people, raphael calls it a disgusting and terrible act, means that it is pretty low, even for a devil's view of the law. and obviously raphael couldve just said it to say it but, i kinda believe that raphael saw it as ridiculous because of how unbalanced the ritual is against a 'natural order'

and by 'natural order', i mean a process in which people commit morally-fitting actions with the use of nature, divinity, magic, energy, etc.; so, an evil person following an evil god is a natural and expected process; and if they fall, that power/balance would restabilize (aka fall back to the deity/power that caused it to rise to begin with). but a ritual involving an archdevil exploiting rules on a realm, race, souls, and deity level, is kind of a multi-leveled thing that can cause many huge layers of problems.

on a side tangent, because of (and in contrast to) this, i kinda believe the chosen three would not become darklords because they're following instruction, delusion, or motivation to a 'natural order' - their superior deity. they're doing it within a reasonably fitting method, even if that method is pretty evil. (the punishment/retaliation of the 'natural order' would then be expected towards the deity, which, i mean.. yea spoilers for endings here but its pretty fitting, isnt it?)

but back to the topic of the two darklord candidates.. cazador wasnt doing that - if he was, if, hypothetically, he went through a vampire or deity/power related to vampirism (which he COULD have, based on my other random syrips theory post), he wouldve been fine. but instead, he tried to loophole even that. instead, he went through an archdevil who (the candidate and the archdevil) are exploiting through a multi-'meta' level of even more loopholes. it's no longer about 'serving a god' or 'contracted to someone' (cuz cazador didnt contract himself to the archdevil, but rather created a ritual contract with the assistance of the archdevil; mild difference being, the ritual can be committed by anyone, as long as the components are all in place)

this means that, if anyone completes the ritual, they are committing the act of the entire process, as though they gathered, sacrificed, and performed all the rites for it to be complete. because, in a way, they did, they pressed the shiny button, pressed yes to continue, even if they do not think their hands are dirty to it

but anyways, i find it interesting because ascended astarion (or cazador) both qualify to be darklords, and it would be incredibly interesting for us to fight one of those or even end up having a domain of dread where they are trapped in for their actions

since we also have shar and the shadowfell (and other bits of ravenloft/vrgtr compatible source stuff in bg3 already), it seems like it can already be done through canonical means through just bg3's in-game lore alone

I know it's been a while since Sleight of Hand was posted but I wanna ramble about something I noticed during a recent reread now that I have knowledge of 4.1 quests.

The raw panic he has when he catches up to the reader makes me think that it falls in line with how he acted in the fortress in regard to Freminet and Lynette: his family. Which is insane considering the short amount of time they know each other as compared to his family. This guy falls in love so fast and hard that he is the world record holder for those categories by a vast margin.

In both situations is the fact he is losing someone close, someone important; granted he is losing them in different ways. His family and the person he loves. Both times he is not composed/ hiding behind his act (or just barely) and is (or at least appears) to be almost single-minded driven to get them back. With his family, he was absolutely willing to go up against the Duke to fight for them back (granted he could have just accepted the deal to contact the Knave but that's a whole different thing about Lyney shhhh) and with reader he ran frantically across the city just for the slim chance he may be able to make it before they leave. That uncertainty/unclear target to focus on (unlike the duke who he could focus on fighting/stopping/convincing, not to mention he may be in a mission mindset as well) may even be a reason why he is so panicked and frantic as compared to what happens in the Fortress. Not to mention the whole falling in love thing prob isn't something he does often, so that's a whole new variable thrown into the equation.

Not only does this new connection make me giggle because wow look at this man speed run falling in love but also makes me wonder what his thoughts could have been when he found the empty room and even as he was trying to catch reader before it was too late. He is smart, so he absolutely figured out the truth but was his first thought wildly off course? Did he assume the worst(hurt in some way) due to what he had seen as part of the Fatui and his past? Did he have an instant rush of relief knowing he made it in time? Was he even calm enough to try to string together a few ideas of what to do if he made it as he was running? Or did he come tunnel-focused with the singular goal of just 'find them'? It's interesting to think about.

i havent played the latest archon quest myself and only learned the lore secondhand so i havent rlly thought about it? honestly i wrote that long fic barely knowing ANYTHING about lyney and how he handles situations—it felt like i was just guessing everything and my only clues were a dialogue or two LMFAO

but this is so interesting to think about!!! my intention with ‘ lyney visiting an empty room ‘ was that he walks in there like a kicked puppy and comes out frantic and wild. he is very smart and hes definitely remembered you insisting that you never planned on staying so he pieced it together immediately

and yes youre ABSOLUTELY right. the reason why hes so frantic and all over the place when he caught up to you was because he didnt even know if you were still there, if he didnt make it in time. the entire time he was thinking ‘no no no please’ he was not at all calm while running lol. his mind would have most likely blanked when he saw you still there and he couldve just dropped on the floor in relief

“the whole falling in love thing prob isnt something he does often” YEAH EXACTLY!!! i see lyney as a romantic but in that fic i like to think hes never been infatuated in that way ever before and it snowballed into something wayyy more when u started getting close

I just read your fic The Horizon and the Little Star all in one go and had an absolute BLAST. Facts about different planets, you know? So it was in the middle of one chapter that I just grinned and kicked my legs in the utter delight of "yes!! AND SUN AND MOON'S WHISTLING AND CHIRPING, I LOVE THAT. I adored the detail of you explaining the pitch of the whistles, I like that a lot. It's great knowing exactly what sounds I'm meant to imagine, very engaging. Also I'm a huge language nerd and me getting to learn words from a made-up language in the middle of a fic gets me so excited

yeaj!!!!!! glad you liked the detail where its a specific sort of whistle that carries a specific meaning. so far every word that the reader has learned has all been in whistles because those are the noises that i can easily recreate. so what i do is that i actually whistle out what it sounds like and then try my best to describe the sound i just made. AND GLAD u like learning the silly lil made up words and sounds because theres going to be more. this language learning is going BOTH WAYS

YEAH moon is like "hehe words :] gonna use them" and through the power of y/n's current word choices he has not said something absolutely stupid yet. if y/n stopped to think about it a little they couldve had him yelling toothpaste ads or smth and he would be none the wiser

[post] hehehe ur correct, remus did 100% create this problem unecessarily. however from his own pov in that very specific situation it made sense. bc 1) remus has v strong adhd, so he kept forgetting to ask janus about this, and then remembered Suddenly in the scene where the miscommunication happened and was like “well i am going to do this Now while i still have the Thought in my brain.” 2) remus is extreeeemely sensitive to potential dangers in any situation featuring interpersonal dynamics, bc of his backstory that i am not talking about hehe. so, there being another superhero in the room while janus was shapeshifted registered as a Potential Danger to remus. and when he registers potential dangers like that, he is 100% committed to helping with any kinds of deception that could be protecting someone’s personal safety. so, while trying to check if it was janus or not before he forgot again, remus was also working with the assumption that it was possible janus Didn’t want the other superhero in the room to know who they were, and was like “okay, i need to not risk spilling that for them, just in case.”

so the combination of those two things is why he did the flirting thing instead of just asking. in most other situations he would have asked, but he just kept Not Thinking Of It in those other situations. it was essentially bad luck lol.

more clarification about how periods impact shapeshifting powers!! bc i thought abt it more after. so:

shapeshifters cannot stop their period once it has started. they don’t entirely lose their shapeshifting powers, but they do lose some of them. basically, they’re stuck with the same, like, “base” body until the period is over. so they can’t change the height of the body, or the fact that it’s having a period, or its bone structure, or things like its digestive or nervous systems, or things like that—anything the body needs to maintain to run. they can change things like hair, eye color, fat and muscle distribution (to some degree), and so on—anything that’s not integral to the body running. shapeshifting those things is also harder than it would usually be, it takes more concentration and energy. and then once the period is over their powers go back to normal.

for how shapeshifting generally works: the shapeshifter essentially just. imagines the thing they want to shapeshift into. and then they turn into it. they do have to like, make it happen after they imagine the shape they want? like. their brain is making a command for their body to do the thing. kind of like,, intentionally blinking. it feels like that. and then the actual shapeshift happens very fast, like maybe 1-2 seconds for the whole thing. it’s usually pretty easy and doesn’t take much energy, the main exception being if they are shifting to have non-human features (like gills wings etc) or appearances (like making themself be, like, stretched-out-mike-teavee-from-charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory shape). non-human shapeshifts like those do take some extra energy to do, kind of like pushing through a barrier, and the time it takes increases to like 3-5 seconds. also healing by regenerating cells takes more energy and time too. but aside from those cases, and the period case i talked abt in the last paragraph, shapeshifting does not take a noticeable amount of energy. again like blinking. also, shapeshifters can unintentionally shapeshift in their sleep, specifically while they are dreaming. that’s more common for some and less common for others, almost like how sleepwalking is a thing for some people and not for others.

ALSO janus stabbing things is especially funny bc. it doesn’t go with their powers. and it gives them 0 advantage over their nemesis. so there’s literally no reason for them to do it, they just like stabbing things. like, viper (his nemesis) has laser powers. stabbing helps, like, 0% with fighting lasers. janus has like some mirror weapon tool things for when they actually fight viper. and viper now wears protective armor built into her suit’s stomach and chest, and has bracers on her arms. to protect from janus’s illogical stabbing habits. it’s rlly funny.

also, unrelated, but since im talking about viper: she’s a lesbian, and janus is only into men, which both of them are very happy about, because (although janus’s genderfluidity sometimes does make this a tiiiiny bit wobbly, that’s not mostly a problem) it allows them to have all the inherent gay tension of a super nemesis relationship without ever having to worry about actual attraction or feelings getting involved. they’ve literally had whole conversations about this while fighting, and they actually are pretty friendly with each other despite being nemeses. they platonically flirt while trying really hard to beat each other up. they Have given each other relationship advice while fighting before. they have literally so much fun. i love them. im going to see if i can find an excuse to write one of their fights sometimes. it’ll be delightful.

part of the answer to the virgil and janus and patton question is spoilers, but also even aside from that bit. janus is a superhero. janus is very protective of their baby. janus does not want the biggest supervillain in the city to ever ever ever interact with their baby for any reason. that’s all the explanation im sharing for now, but there are more specific reasons too.

okay. okay. if i had to boil down my grievances with daraya in act 2 to the briefest and simplest explanation it would be that.... (continued under cut) (its actually not brief at all)

 Daraya in hiveswap act 2 and daraya in hiveswap friendsim are almost completely different characters, and none of the changes made were in the interest of better characterization. i knew things were gonna be changed, but all of the jades in general but ESPECIALLY daraya (and wanshi) were stripped of all their depth. daraya in act 2 is.... a bully who dresses punk to look cool. daraya in friendsim is a troubled kid (yes, daraya is very unambiguously a young child in friendsim, the absolute oldest i could buy them being is 16, but theyre probably closer to 14 or 15, this definietly makes some of the things lynera, who is significantly older,  says about them unbearably awful to read, but i digress since that’s not my point here) 

in friendsim daraya is cranky, abrasive, combative, and sometimes difficult on purpose. the narration does not dance around the fact that this is not a healthy mindset, and that it can be aggravating and unfair to those around daraya. however, the narration and dialogue also goes to great lengths to show that daraya is not that way without reason, nor are they a malicious person, nor do they derive any kind of joy or satisfaction out of acting this way. they are far more scared and lonely than they are mean. they are, well, a troubled teenager! 

another thing i want to stress is that daraya in friendsim does not ever really lash out without provocation. or really.... talk much to other trolls. when chahut is making dubiously friendly attempts at conversation, daraya says nothing, only fidgeting nervously until she goes away. the narration even notes that tyzias is enjoying getting to monologue at daraya. yes, daraya snaps at tyzias, angrily ranting about how stupid her ideas are. however, when the reader says to daraya, “hey, that’s not a good use of your anger, and also its not fair to treat tyzias like that”, daraya gets defensive, saying that it was just their opinion, BUT they do apologise and say they should have voiced it differently, and that their anger was with the system and how hopeless they feel, not with tyzias herself. even though daraya’s relation to these two trolls and their relation to the jades is different, you can glean from these interactions that daraya’s not a malicious person, and when they do act angrily towards others, it’s in self defense or frustration, not out of a desire to belittle or harm anyone. but in act 2, daraya joins with lanque taking low blows at lynera for seemingly... no reason.

we really just do not learn anything about daraya in act 2. the trial was about them, for pete’s sake, but we hardly get insights into anything about them. and the conflict between lynera and daraya being “lynera thinks daraya is romantic competition” is just... not an interesting conflict. i know this is a matter of opinion, but given the depth of these characters in friendsim, there definietly couldve been a better , more emotionally compelling (and less uncomfortable to think about) reason for these characters to be at conflict. daraya’s a codebreaker who mouths off at lynera and bronya when they try to tell them what to do because they feel like they have no freedom, and are taking out their frustration on the people they percieve as the issue without stopping to think that lynera and bronya suffer under this system as well. lynera’s a stringent, harsh leader who is very unforgiving to her underlings because of her own insecurities give her an unquenchable need for conformity. surely there is a better emotional plot to be had here, no? of the two not exactly becoming chummy, but deciding to lay off each other a bit, because they’re both focusing their energy and anger on the wrong place? 

this isnt even getting into bronya lanque and wanshi, but i already typed too much, someday i wanna do like, a full in depth panning of the whole jade car segment but for now all you get is this very disorganized and rambly post

I feel like Im in the minority that actually did think pru was fun but that being said it ended SO abruptly and with like three separate plotlines completely abandoned that I was really frustrated for days after watching it until I had processed everything and had time to think deeply about it lol it just seemed rly unfinished?? it feels like it was deliberately made as 1/2 of two sequels and there needs to be one more to tie everything up. actually I’m gonna ramble abt this bc I have a lot of thoughts (obvs spoilers under the cut)

the thing about the second one was that I genuinely was enjoying it right up until it ended because I swear to god the moment the end screen went up I yelled "what the fuck, that's it?" out loud into my bedroom bc I was so SHOCKED that THAT'S how it all ended, because it just seemed so incomplete?? Like it seemed like one half of a story, that will only be made whole if there's a third one to tie up all the plotlines that they didn't go through with in the second and if that's the case then I will be completely fine with it but if it doesn't or if they dont have a third one at all I will stay so frustrated lol. one silver lining to this is that the vibe of this movie was so different from the first that it almost feels easy to separate it and just imagine it as an AU if you prefer which is sort of nice; usually if a piece of media I like does something bad I feel all gutted and anxious and terrible that this is the canon I have to accept, but something abt this movie just made it feel like it was sort of a totally separate deal. maybe cuz only 3 of the original characters were in it idk

to start off: I felt like there were a couple of plotlines in it that were just sort of introduced and then never seen through which was very ????? Amara & Vik's weird hate-rivalry thing was one of them; Vik instantly has it out for Amara bc she’s jealous, which is a very interesting concept, and then this prompts Amara to become hostile right back at her, which is also a very interesting concept, and then it never got resolved at all? like they couldve done something really cool with those two but it just never went anywhere. and then there was sort of a weird love triangle thing happening between Jake and Nate and Jules that felt so weird bc it had no significance to the plot at all and it felt like it was only thrown in there for the sake of having ~romantic drama~ idk maybe I wasnt paying too much attention and there was more to it than that but it really just seemed like they wanted to put romance in there and didnt want to bother to put any work into it

BUT the thing about romantic sub plots is that THERE ALREADY WAAAAS OOOOOOOOONE which brings me to the biggest frustration I have w this movie because--and DISCLAIMER, this was also my favourite plot point of the movie bc it was by far the most interesting, the biggest reason for me enjoying the movie at all, and the bit I feel like should have had WAY more attention--Newt and Hermann were like legitimately in love in this movie I swear to god I was watching it and thinking “this is GENUINELY the most blatantly gay thing I’ve ever seen in a feature film and I know that straight ppl are very talented at writing gay romances completely by accident so it’s possible that they just accidentally did it this way but also it is REALLY goddamn obvious oh my gooood?” (and then I did a lot of frantic googling and found out that I was right and Charlie Day & Burn Gorman knew what the fuck they were doing and I felt so validated lol), and yet despite this, the movie had them speak for the last time almost at the halfway point of the film and then spend the entire second half apart and not talking at all and even at the post-credits scene where Jake and Newt talked for a bit Hermann wasn't there?? not even behind Jake to give Newt any searching glances?? Nothing??

dude...Newt being possessed by the precursors is a HUGELY interesting concept that actually makes sense and I wish it had had more attention. I’ve seen a lot of ppl say that pru butchered Newt’s character and I don’t 100% agree bc like...being possessed will change you lmao so while yes I’m obviously sad that he wasn’t himself, I feel like it made sense that he had a slight personality change, because it...wasn’t him anymore. we don’t really see the Newt we all fell in love with in the first movie. we THINK we’re seeing him, but halfway through we find out we’re wrong.

my critiques with that plotline are basically that I wish the reveal had happened a little bit later on, and I wish that it had been a little more obvious I guess?? like, we definitely get hints of it (when Hermann excitedly asks Newt to help him with a dangerous unorthodox project and Newt says “dude why are you doing something so risky when we’ve already got a good plan in motion? just wait for that to be done, it’s fine” and Hermann IS us, he IS the audience when he reacts, because this is a completely insane thing for Newt to say. Newt, who, in the first movie, was so obsessed with finding knowledge that he went behind the marshall’s back to literally risk his life doing something incredibly dangerous just to see what would happen? being given the opportunity to do the same kind of dangerous frivolous act and refusing? this is blatantly out of character, and Hermann is all of us when he’s shocked, “what, you mean you...won’t help me??” which means it wasn’t bad writing on their part, it was purposefully supposed to stand out as something that was wrong and something that we needed to pay attention to. that was a really good scene to hint that something was Not Right with Newt), and I wish there had been a bunch more like it. I think the reveal should have been saved for the end of the second act; I think that should have been the moment that act 2 of a story usually has, that dreadful event that happens that leaves the main characters feeling completely hopeless and unsure what to do.

I also wish that he had managed to break through more than That One Scene, I think it would’ve been more dramatic if he’d had a few moments where he managed to take control for a second to remind us that he’s still in there and still fighting, and I’m sad they didn’t do that. I saw a fan comic that touched on this idea and I think it’s brilliant, even the idea of him suddenly getting a nosebleed and acting distracted to show that that’s the Real Him trying to fight through would have been sooooooooo good.

I also feel like it didn’t make any sense for Nate to be the one to subdue him in the end, I dont even think those two interact at all so like, why was it him?? it would have been so much more dramatic and heartbreaking if Hermann had been the one to confront him so they could’ve had a little conversation on the roof where Newt could once again break through for a second before getting taken over and then Hermann could like idk have a taser hidden behind him that he uses to subdue him and THAT wouldve been a way sadder and more interesting way to do it. I also think Hermann shouldve been the one to speak to him in the post credits scene, or to have him in the background behind Jake just watching him sadly so we can get a couple shots of intense eye contact like UGH I just wish there had been more interaction between the two of them after the reveal happened!! When the movie was over and I realized they never spoke again I felt so upset!!! they're soulmates!! they're literally in love!! this has been CONFIRMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and segueing in from the soulmate thing, another thing that made me sad was that nobody came in pairs anymore :( aside from Newt and Hermann, they were the only ones gjdfk but in the first one every character had another character that they were paired up with, both for drifting reasons and just for plot reasons (except Chau and Tendo but I’m pretty sure there's actually significance to that too), and in the second one it just sort of felt like everyone was drifting with each other with no strong connection needed and that made it feel way less special. granted, the movie takes place ten years after the first one so in that time maybe technology advanced to the point where you didn't need a strong neural connection to drift anymore, but for the sake of the story it would have been way better if they'd kept the whole soulmates concept from the first one, it made it way stronger and more special

so yeah in conclusion I did think pru was enjoyable and I probably would watch it again some time but also it definitely pales in comparison to the first one and I’m desperately hoping we get one more so they can tie everything together and FIX THINGS KFGH it’s not too late!!!!! I wish I could write Pacific Rim 3 I genuinely think I would do a good job I love storytelling and I’m very passionate about these characters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mind u, the Entire time i watched Jon, i never peeped on Reddit (i just dont visit that site) and i NEVER went on twitter(bc i didnt have an account there). So if he ever posted some crazy controversial shit, i was unaware bc i never saw it appear on my dash on tumblr. TL;DR he made some shitty xenophobic remarks regarding refugees in fleeing a wartorn city (Syria i think). And people were like hold the fuck up are u serious?? Some people at Nor//malBoo//ts (PBG in particular) called him out on how backwards and insensitive that mindset was. And i cant remember where his parents are from but his parents are definitely immigrants. So ye, hypocritical.
