MCU story idea

Background: This was inspired by AlwaysAmused's story "To Speak" on AO3. (Their Tumblr is @simplyaskeleton ) Fantastic story, 10/10 would recommend. In that story, Loki doesn't fall off the Bifrost and has to go to therapy (YAY!) Partway through the story, they discover that Odin's mother, Thor's grandmother, was a Jötun and that set off my imagination and birthed this little thing.

I came up with a headcanon that Jötuns can't have mint of any kind. For them, it's a fast acting poison that raises their internal body temperature until they basically bake alive. In most of the nine realms, it's referred to as Frostbane but it's not common knowledge that it grows on Earth.

The first time Thor comes into contact with Frostbane is at a party on Asgard (Loki was told of his heritage much sooner in my version, so he knows to avoid it).

Whoever's hosting the party passes hard mint lemonades around telling everyone about the history of Frostbane (because they're a nerd). Thor, not knowing that he's a QUARTER JÖTUN knocks back three of them thinking nothing of it.

Ten minutes later he's outside retching his guts out. Loki notices his absence and goes to find him.

When he sees his brother collapsed on the ground and sweating like a dog, he has a horrible feeling he knows what happened. He doesn't know how, but he can put two and two together to make four.

He calls for help and Volstagg and Fandral, who are also at the party hear and come running. Loki reveals nothing of his suspicions to them but only says that they need to get him back to the palace ASAP.

Thor doesn't wake for three days because of the fever and is bedridden for another week (it would have been longer, but he was bored and stubborn). The fever also damaged the hairs in his ears that detect sounds and made it very difficult for him to hear high pitched noises such as beeping or women's voices.

He was shocked to find out about his Jötun heritage, but knowing about Loki beforehand helped him accept himself more easily.

The next time Thor has Frostbane is more than a hundred years later, after he joins the Avengers. They are having a Christmas get together and Tony is serving peppermint cocoa.

Thor takes a sip and notices a slightly familiar undertaste. Unfortunately, it's a different kind of mint and it's masked by the chocolate so he doesn't recognize it in time. He's about halfway through his mug before he starts to feel ill and overheated.

Bruce notices that he seems withdrawn and is starting to look flushed and sick so he asks if he's okay. Thor replies that he believes he is in need of medical attention.

Bruce immediately goes into doctor mode and has Tony call 911. He asks Thor what's going on and Thor says that he ingested something he should not have. He tells Bruce that it's a poison that is often deadly to people like him and it causes a fever.

Tony hears all of this and relays it to the dispatcher. Clint goes downstairs to show the paramedics the way up and Natasha helps Bruce in any way she can.

Thor ends up staying in the hospital for two days and, unfortunately, loses MORE of his hearing this time.

When he wakes up, Clint breaks the news to him that he's now hard of hearing. Thor only laughs and tells him that he is already well acquainted to a quieter world than most are used to; a little less noise will make very little difference indeed.

Clint suddenly understands why Thor is the way he is sometimes; ignoring timers, talking over women, speaking loudly in general. He can't hear very well! Clint offers to teach him some ASL to help with communication in the field and when talking to Nat. That way he doesn't have to try and read her lips all the time.

Thor agrees that it sounds like a wonderful idea! When he returns to Asgard, he starts teaching all of the warriors some basic sign and it turns out to be very useful.

Also, forever after, there is a total ban on any kind of mint entering into the Avengers Tower and the rule becomes a huge topic of conversation amongst the public.

Fic or Treat!

Or, damn, there really aren’t a lot of fall/Halloween/Thanksgiving seasonal TAZ fics, huh?

Right, but in all seriousness, I wanted to create a TAZ fic rec list for the fall/Halloween season. Per my aforementioned point, some of these are not strictly speaking related to either of those things, but fit in a more tangential spooky/eerie/supernatural way. But these are all authors I’ve read things from and whose writing I enjoy, so I hope you do to. As always, mind the tags, and kudos and comment to support these folks!

So, without further ado, in no particular order (I am literally rolling a d10 for that):

1. The Robots of Maureen Miller by AlwaysAmused ( @simplyaskeleton )

A little goofy, a little angsty, a whole lot of accidental robot murdery. Featuring disaster scientist Maureen Miller and a battalion of equally disastrous robots. What could go wrong? Really, Baines, what could possibly go wrong? Baines? BAINES? I guess you’re just going to have to read this good good fic and find out!

2. dancing in a swirl of golden memories by everqueen ( @everqueen12 )

So you’re on my page, so I’m assuming you like TAZ. Also a fan of Over the Garden Wall? Here’s Kat’s OTGW AU fic for a Taakitz week of old. If you’re not familiar with Kat’s work, this is one unknown I’ll yeet you into myself, because Kat is a delightful author. A is for awesome which is what Kat is, B is for boys lost in the woods, C is for comments are the best, and D is for dear God I don’t know how to end this bit!

3. Rest for the Wicked by BoPeepWithNoSheep (@thisiswhyidonthaveatumblr)

This is one of the ones that is really not fully on with the Halloween theme, but Bo can write the creepy and the unsettling so delightfully well that... well, my list, my rules. So there. It’s good fic! A particularly creepy look at what happens when a new antagonist pops up after the world has been saved and they have a little too much interest in Lucretia. Hm. HM. (Mind the tags!)

4. Draw Me Forth from the Otherside by TaraHarkon

1880s post-Civil War spiritualism and seances with Barry, Lup, Taako, and more? YES. As it’s Tara, you can of course expect that more to include the Wonderland twins. Ghosts and spookiness abound, and as always, Tara is an excellent writer.

5. The Clone in the Back Room by M_Logolepsy (@lonelyjournal-keeper)

So who was left with questions about Garfield growing a Magnus body? Who DIDN’T want those questions answered? Great! Enjoy Mads’s fic about Garfield through the Balance arc, where she absolutely fucking nails just how unnerving all that is and makes you laugh while doing it!

6. A Chill Wind Blowing by DragonWrites

Jen herself calls this one a ghost story, so fair game for this list. What happens when the crew of the Starblaster dies during the century? Is our dear Captain really haunting Barry’s denim-clad ass? How is Jen still the best Davenport writer out there even when she kills him? HA! Like I’m spoiling this good good fic for you!

7. Not Your Usual Round... by Jairephix

Definitely the shortest fic on the list, but Briar setting Wonderland and Haunted Doll Watch on a collision course made me cackle with laughter. Absolutely nails the sibling energy.

8. (I Put a Spell on You) And Now You’re Mine by ceilingfan5 (@ceilingfan5)

Chances are you’ve seen some of Larissa’s shorter work floating around the taz fic tumblr world, and I am here to assure you that her work is always that good! Hello fluffy Halloween Taakitz goodness - this is probably sweeter than  the whole of that Orange Creme Halloween Oreo display in the Fantasy Target!

9. In This Town (We Call Home) by Hoothootmotherf_ckers (@hoothootmotherf-ckers)

Didn’t ship Ren and Noelle before well guess what now you do because of this good good sweet fluffy Halloween filled fic featuring girlfriends Ren and Noelle celebrating their favorite holiday. This fic has the feel of eating candy while cozy under a blanket on the couch watching a Halloween movie while you’ve got a cinnamon pumpkin candle burning and I love it so much.

10. stepping back to golden days by Hoothootmotherf_ckers

Another fall fic from Shell, this one focuses on Magnus and Lucretia and their good good sibling energy and also just absolutely fucking oneshot my bisexual ass with the image of both Magnus and Lucretia in flannel shirts with rolled up sleeves. It’s so very fluffy and you get to run around and see all your favorite characters happy and enjoying nifty fall activities and this one is like wearing that flannel shirt out to go pick a pumpkin and eating local caramel apples and popcorn.

This one’s really well written with some fun (maybe a little panic inducing) flashbacks, but it’s all 3rd person from Odin’s perspective. It’s kind of bittersweet, but a really good read.

Loki is behaving strangely. Thor can't figure out what's wrong but wants to help nevertheless.

This one’s also really well done, and such a good story. It unfortunately doesn’t have a continuation. It’s supposed to be a series, but doesn’t have anything other than the two chapters the link has. This one is about Loki and Thor when they were younger, and if Loki knew what they were at a younger age, as the description says. It’s actually so good, and I really enjoyed reading it.

This one was such a treat to read. It’s just nice and sweet. In it, Loki and Val get wasted, but Loki gets a little more than wasted and Val just dumps him on Thor. They have some drunk bonding, and it’s just kind of cute. I would definitely suggest this after reading all the angst I’ve already suggested.

Aaaah, this is actually so good! There isn’t any dying or almost dying, but it’s still sooooo good! This one, Loki doesn’t fall off the Bifrost, and Odin kind of makes him go to therapy. He gets to build his relationship again with pretty much everyone, and it’s just such a good read! It’s pretty emotional, and the expanding on the Asgardian side of Marvel is so good. All of the information they added seems so real, and they do such a good job at forming this world out of a world that already exists. It’s just so detailed and so believable and brilliantly written.

Also really well written and so sweet! It’s from Thor’s perspective and it’s pretty much just Thor deciding he’s going to be supportive of Loki, no matter what for he takes. This was honestly so healing to read. If you’re struggling to find acceptance of any kind, but especially with gender, this fic is kind of therapeutic to read.

Lucretia wakes up as the train lurches to a stop, and she looks around blearily. Glancing out the window, she sees that the sun is setting. She rubs the sleep from her eyes and gathers up her belongings. Once she’s sure she has everything, she pulls her disguise back over herself and exits the train, pulling out her itinerary again. As she looks around the station, she doesn’t see anyone she recognizes. With a sigh of relief, she makes her way out of the station, and waits for a cab. Eventually, she’s able to climb into one and head to the hotel Lucas picked out for her.

She goes to the front desk, gives the receptionist her name, and accepts the key. She then pauses and says, “I have… a small request.”

“Yes, ma’am?” the receptionist asks. She’s a blond halfling who looks like she’s been doing this job forever.

“If anyone comes looking for me, is it possible for my room number to be kept private?”

The receptionist—her name tag says Marta—smiles. “Of course. We never give out the name or room numbers of our guests unless we have express permission. Is that all?”

Lucretia thanks her and makes her way up to her room. Fortunately, it isn’t long before she’s collapsing onto the bed, her stuff dropped close to the door. She knows from looking at her itinerary over and over that she has a reservation at a nice restaurant, but a part of her wants to blow it off. She’s had a remarkably exhausting day, and all she wants to do is order room service and sleep.

Well, she thinks with her face buried in pillows. Why don’t I?

She feels a little thrill at the thought of going off schedule. Her heart leaps and thumps in her hears. You know what? I’m not going to even call to cancel. I’m just going to lie here, take a nap, then get room service. She pauses and rolls over to look at the bedside table, picking up the menu and room service details off of it. Room service ends at one am, she thinks. I can wake up before then, right? Right. She tosses the room service menu onto the bed next to her, kicks off her shoes, and hugs a pillow as she curls up. The bed is so soft, and she’s so fucking comfortable.

Oh yeah, she thinks, eyes closed. I deserve this.

She can’t remember the last time she took a vacation. The Beach Cycle is the first that comes to mind, but there had been other rest years, as it were. Still, she hasn’t ever taken a real vacation on Faerun. There were days she rested for a moment, but since the Bureau of Balance really took off, she hasn’t paused a single moment to rest.

There’s no Hunger. No world-ending problem. No wars or natural disasters. No mission.

“Fuck,” Lucretia says again, fully realizing her situation. “I can take a week off. Maybe even two weeks. Why not?”
