Underglaze transfer - Think homemade temporary tattoos, but with underglaze, paper and porcelain greenware. Watching the witchy transfers of @mypapercrane tempted the experimentation. I tried several different handy bits of paper, and just painted the designs on with underglaze. Then the next day in the studio I messed around with some water and a rubber kidney and this is one of the resulting transfers. Imperfect but I liked the character added in the process. I did touch it up a little after these photos.

This cat is Zelda looking like a gorgeous fat puddle. Stripy cats lend themselves to this style.

I apply an underglaze wash on my work after the bisque firing. @amacobrent Jet Black is brushed on the entire piece and then wiped away. The wash emphasizes the surface and texture by staying in the low spots and wiping away from the high places. Looks like it’s kiln unloading day. Yay. Almost everything came out great. Lost a bowl to a piece of trash off a shelf (time to grind the shelves) and 4 tumblers to bloating. I had though my previous issue I had with bloating was due to too heavy a reduction too soon. But this firing was minimal reduction so I think my clay body may be the culprit and just can’t handle those two lower back corners. I did pick up 50 lbs of a different clay body to test out in the next firing. I will also be adding in some target bricks in the fire boxes. My thought is that the target bricks will force the flame up before it hits the wall keeping the back corners from getting to much reduction and help even the heat out. It does make me scratch my head a little as the top and middle of the kiln is slightly hotter than the bottom as evidenced by the cones. Well it is clay and it’s always got to be something. Unloaded the gas kiln yesterday evening and got to see my finished work. This little silly ditty of #styrofoam #tacohat @tacosombrero.official cups is ready for some sweat tea while eating a macho taco chicken salad. 🤤 In all seriousness the firing went well, the glazes did what they were suppose to do, and the #corrosiveware looks corrosive. I am a little disappointed in the specks that have come through the underglaze. This means there must have been a change in mesh size, change in material or a contamination in a material. It doesn’t affect the clay, just gives it specks. This came as a bit of a shock, because this clay has never been speckled like this before. However with each batch of clay there will be a chance for things to not be exact since ceramics is a secondary market for the materials. Now that I know I can make decisions about what to do going forward. Wiping back the underglaze wash to make the details pop on this hand built yunomi. It was made using the cutoff sections from other pots. Waste not want not and it keeps me from having to recycle all those materials.
