...actually it's kind of effed up that the early MCU cared so little about women that Loki has no bio mother (and nobody ever even asks the question). yes, yes, i see the daddy issues, i am very invested in how this specific male character has daddy issues (lying, btw), but like. they literally just forgot mothers exist???

so. arcane. the next season is (hopefully) coming out this year and I can't help but kinda dread it? mostly because the first season was so damn good I feel like the second season has a high standard to live up to. and partially because since I saw that the arcane stories are now the characters league lore as well I really feel they're gonna fumble somewhere.

as much as I love the show for its animation, story, soundtrack, and direction I always thought that the show's biggest downfall was that it was unfortunately a league of legends ip, and the creators will try to tie it in to the games in an attempt to make the games better, but will probably only serve to make the show worse.

I do think “teenager intentionally kicks off very volatile contingency plan which goes worse than expected due to not having all the information, gets a lot of civilians killed, then dies horribly” is a depressing, unsatisfying story arc. Like, War Games just plain sucks.

So if DC wanted to throw Gotham into yet another city-wide disaster, and wanted it to be this particular kind of disaster, how could they have done it more satisfyingly?

Well, I think... have it be kicked off by a character that’s actually been involved in the Gotham mafias / organized crime. There’s multiple options here.

1. Play up Jason & Bruce being two sides of the same coin. Bruce has been working on these plans a long time, long enough that Jason knew about it (and consulted on it!) during his Robin days. Jason works on his own version, in which Red Hood would take the place of Matches Malone, but outside interference (such as Batman jumping in at the wrong moment) makes everything go sideways and oh fuck.

2. Helena Bertinelli. She’s not kicking off some contingency plan, she just straight up is luring all the heads of the Gotham crime families to one place to kill them, but the end result is the same. I need to read more of her comics to figure out how well this actually works. Heck, you actually could still involve Steph in this one; they teamed up in the aftermath of the Quake, there’s precedent.

3. Two-Face or one of the other Rogues that’s more crime-boss than supervillain. You could even have it be inspired by Bruce; he visits Harvey regularly when he’s locked up. Get them talking about their youth, Harvey’s former passion for the justice system, grand plans for “cleaning up” Gotham that felt really good to black-and-white teenage thinking, but don’t hold up to life’s actual complexities.

Or, you know, let Bruce decide Now Is The Time, kick off his own plan, but something outside his control stops him from making it to the meeting as Matches Malone, and Batman is the one who just completely fucked over the city.

DC wouldn’t ever let Bruce both fuck up on that scale and acknowledge it as a fuck up in main continuity though, so this one would sadly be stuck as an Elseworld.

Back again railing against queer homogeny. I technically use any pronouns and there’s this whole Moral Code that if someone uses multiple pronouns, you must use them all back and forth for MAXIMUM RESPECT. THIS ISNT UNIVERSALLY TRUE! It isnt! I know this because i use any and to me that means there is no wrong pronoun, i could give a fuck. I mostly hear “she” thrown at me, an occasional “they” (which gives me insane euphoria), and “he” Exclusively from myself. Because conventionally i dont look or sound like a He. And i dont care. It would make me feel bad if i can recognize someone forcing a He.

I have to pry myself off the computer for real but tomorrow will someone please talk to me about Love Between Fairy & Devil now that I've finally watched it a year after the rest of the internet, and how Fairy Danyin is the best character, and Danyin/Changheng is the most lesbian (and/or gnc)/gay solidarity ship ever, and I am so stunned that they textually ended with Danyin admitting her original thing for Gods of War is that she wanted to become one herself - i.e. there was some "idk if I want to be him or be with him" to her Changheng pining - and with her demonstratively labeling Changheng her xiongdi???????? They are bros in every lifetime!! And should go on Chidi/Danyin Changheng/Ronghao double dates!!!
