Begun in 1892 and taking a full three years to complete, the Conrad-Caldwell House is the masterpiece of Louisville architect Arthur Loomis of the architectural firm Clark & Loomis. At a cost of $35,000, it is one of the finest examples of a residential Richardsonian Romanesque structure.

Shared from @perkinshouse I took a lot of pictures today, in West Salem and La Crosse, Wisconsin, and in Hastings, Minnesota. I have no idea what to post first, so here's a castle. 😊 This home was built for Nymphus B Holway in 1891. It's now a bed and breakfast. I didn't get a look inside, but it sounds like it's stunning. . #stonehouse #americancastle #bluesky #richardsonianromanesque #queenanne #turret #lacrossewisconsin #sunnyday, #BrickStory, #oldhouselove #oldhome #thisoldhouse #architecture, #archi_ologie #housesofinstagram #oldhousecharm #travelnow, #travelamerica, #deserve2preserve #archigram #architecture_hunter #architecture_best #architecturaldesign #architecturedaily #architecturedetails #instarchitecture #architecture_view #architecturealways #designdetails . Enjoyed a three hour lunch with my dear friend Colleen Farrell today. She is a treasure! We are so fortunate to have her in Murray County. She is the author and editor of the historic Maury publication which comes out poorly from the Murray County historical Society. I learned so much about our beautiful town every time I see her. Pictured is a 1930s photo of the Columbia female Institute. #historygeek #maurycountytn #columbiatn #americancastle (at Columbia, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/susanelizabethjones_art/p/Bvm4Bxwg19x/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=9pa11sczv4qf

#AmericanCastles Repost from @americancastles • Well, look at this beauty I was tagged in this week! #featurefriday this week is this amazing Second Empire from @donald_boerger. I love a good over the top design. Thanks for tagging me! ---------------------------- For #mansardroof Mondays! The Riverside Historic District features homes built by Evansville‘s founding fathers. The homes represent a variety of architecture styles including Italianate, Colonial Revival and Renaissance Revival. The district is one block from the Ohio River. The large street trees and brick streets will lead you to a time capsule of architecture frozen in time. Wakins F. Nesbit, a local dry goods merchant, built this 3-story brick Second Empire Style residence for his wife, 8 of his 10 children and 3 servants in 1878-79. The magnificent home and all of its glory was built by the Reid Brothers local architects. #old #oldhomes #oldhomelove #homedecor #mansory #mansardmonday #secondempire #travel #homestyling #historichomes #thisplacematters #architecture #architecturelovers #archi_ologie #house #houselove #pretty_shotz #pretty #homesofinstagram #homesofinsta #indiana #americancastlesff https://www.instagram.com/p/CRZEc8JsBdHm7ng3VJxr4yHh-4tVQZSzTXREq80/?utm_medium=tumblr

60 Meeting Street is a Victorian residence located in Charleston, South Carolina. It was originally built in 1747 as a part of a three story double tenement by Charles Town merchant William Ellis. The other building is located around the corner on Tradd Street and reflects the original architecture of the buildings. This house, however, was augmented greatly in the 1890s by Bertram Kramer, a general contractor, into the fashionable high Victorian style. It's unknown whether Kramer oversaw these changes himself, but it certainly seems possible. It is 6,065 square feet, features a rooftop garden, 6 bedrooms, 5.5 baths, and a delightful mansard roof (it's an unintentional #mansardmonday!) with turret. This photo was taken last Christmas, so you can see the owners decorated the turret with a festive Santa hat. #americancastles https://www.instagram.com/p/BzJnyJNA93c/?igshid=xxtzzvul2fzz

💕 Castles bring to mind kings riding out into battle, delicious court feasts, jousting tournaments and perhaps a few ill-fated battles. These rich, historical places have the ultimate pull over our imaginations. If you’re looking for the world’s dreamiest castles, there are so many places to start. Whether you want to see the resting places of elegant women, the rough and tumble castles of armed warriors or the fairytale palaces of 19th-century barons. The castle, and all it represents, will always be with us. Once it was born, once the stone was made living, the repository of power made real, the idea could never be unmade. Even if all the castles of all the world were destroyed, in the minds of men they would be built anew; the wizard called imagination would raise high walls and towers out of ruins.

#AmericanCastles Repost from @historicalhomesofamerica • Ochre Court is a large châteauesque mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, United States. Commissioned by Ogden Goelet, it was built at a cost of $4.5 million in 1892. It is the second largest mansion in Newport after nearby The Breakers. These two mansions, along with Belcourt Castle (the 3rd largest mansion) and Marble House, were designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt. It is owned by Salve Regina University. Photos by J. This grand home at 712 E. Lexington in Harrodsburg, Kentucky has fallen into terribly sad condition. The over 10,000 square foot Romanesque Revival house was built by Colonel Daniel Lawson Moore for his second wife, Miss Minnie Ball of Woodford County, whom he married in 1891. The residence is the largest in Mercer County, and the handsomest building in the Romanesque Revival style in Central Kentucky. It took five years to build. The architect is unknown. In architectural quality the residence is equal to the Theophilus Conrad house at St. James Court in Louisville, designed by the architects, C.J. Clark and Arthur Loomis, and built during the mid 1890’s, which is considered the finest example of its kind in that city. The mansion at Mooreland is built of limestone and brick, the front of the building being entirely of stone. Each block is carefully tooled, with ribbing or bush-hammer and is laid with pink mortar. The façade features a veranda of large semicircular arches carried on short round pillars of polished granite with elaborately carved limestone capitals. The veranda curves into octagonal forms at either end, that at the south extremity being a four-storied tower crowned by an entablature and parapet. The home was recently up for auction and is desperately in need of some love (and investment) . #BrickStory, #americancastle, #RomanesqueRevival, #romanesque, #revival, #oldhouselove #archi_ologie, #thisplacematters, #manor, #moore, #savingplaces, #helpme, #kentuckyhome, #rehabaddict #houseaddict #thisoldhouse #chasing_facades #iloveoldhouses, #storyteller, #travelnow, #travelamerica, #dreamhome, #deservetopreserve, #saveme, #historicalhomes, #historichome, #instahomes, #instaarchitecture, #instahistory, #kingsandqueens (Photos from Historical Homes of America on Facebook) . Shared from @redondahead . Happy mansard Monday! This is the 1890 Trube Castle. 😍 I squealed with delight when I saw the roof from a few blocks over. Then I hunted it down! #housestalker Built in 1890, by John Clement Trube and his wife Veronica Durst Trube and designed by architect Alfred Muller, is one of the most photographed historic buildings in Texas. It is distinctly Galveston and epitomizes the city’s 1890’s state of mind. The 7000 sq. ft., 21 room castle was designed to replicate castles from Trube’s memory as a boy in Kiel , Denmark. It was completed in 3 ½ months from start to finish including stables, by contractor J. W. Pope, at the cost of $9,700. It is three stories and constructed of bricks covered by stucco mixed with Belgium cement creating a rusticated stone effect. The mansard slate roof with seven gables and the battlement tower give the historic home a castle distinction. The observation deck on the top of the tower offers a view of both the gulf and the harbor. The architect Alfred Muller, designed many prominent buildings in the state, but the Trube Castle is one of the few remaining . His work includes the Galveston 1888 City Hall (now razed) and the Old Main on the Sam Houston State University campus in Huntsville (destroyed by fire in the 1980s). Trube and his brother lived in Houston and purchased property there and in Galveston. They also owned a grocery store in the Heights. The Trubes built the castle when they were in their 50’s. . #BrickStory, #oldhouselove #oldhome #thisoldhouse #architecture, #archi_ologie #housesofinstagram #historical #homedesign #oldhousecharm #castle, #americancastle, #galveston, #storyteller , #travelnow, #travelamerica, #mansard #deserve2preserve #historichome #historylover #archigram #architecture_hunter #architecture_best #architecturaldesign #architecturedaily #architecturedetails #instarchitecture #architecture_view #architect . If you have lived in Detroit ...oh, I don't know - over the past hundred years or so - to see this home come back to life over the past few years - well, it's been incredible. Thank you for the BrickStory tag, @jpinthe313 !! . The rehabilitation of the historic residence of the notorious James Scott has been truly a special (and sometimes frustrating) sight to behold and would have to be considered among Detroit's greatest and most gratifying preservation efforts to date. It wasn't that long ago that it was a hulking, deteriorating remnant of a bygone era. Now, here it is, a shining example of rebirth in an area once synonymous with destitution and hopelessness. . #Detroit #CassCorridor #MidtownDetroit #RomanesqueRevival #VictorianArchitecture #SmithHinchmanandGrylls #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #americancastle #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #survivor, #MichiganPlacesMatter #SavingPlaces #storyteller, #oldhouselove . #AmericanCastles Repost from @americancastles • This Colonial stunner is located at 2207 Harcourt Drive in the Ambler Heights neighborhood of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Tucked away at the top of Cedar Glen Road, Ambler Heights was named for Dr. Nathan Hardy Ambler, who went into real estate after amassing a fortune in the California Gold Rush. He had previously been a dentist. The district was begun in 1903 and was mostly completed by 1927. This stately Georgian, with the drop dead portico, was built in 1907 by architect Frank B. Meade for, presumably, Charles S. Reed, as it's refered to as the Charles S. Reed Residence. https://www.instagram.com/p/CRo6JKvMZ5at0fEwxN9brhGU4UQKzWaybhviwA0/?utm_medium=tumblr
