Are you a teaching artist, and you just don’t know it???
One the latest episode of One Symphony Podcast, Eric Booth, a lifelong teaching artist, brings to the table how to link broader audience with professional art forms. Booth discusses what constitutes a teaching artist, emphasizing that their role extends beyond teaching a specific art form to activating the creative abilities in others. He also discusses the concept of “entry points,” which allows non-experts to make personally-relevant connections to works of art.
Booth further explores the notion of open rehearsals, creating room for audience engagement, question-asking and building up appreciation for the technical skills of musicians. Furthermore, Booth touches upon the importance of celebrating mistakes as part of the creative process, fostering growth mindset and nurturing artist expression.

Royden Mills’s Resonant Progression Recognized for Excellence by Americans for the Arts

Americans for the Arts today honored 49 outstanding public arts projects created in 2017 through the Public Art Network Year in Review program, the only national program that specifically recognizes the most compelling public art. Chosen by public art experts, the roster of selected projects was unveiled this morning at Americans for the Arts’ Annual Convention in Denver. This is the 17th year that Americans for the Arts has recognized public art works.
Resonant Progression, created by Edmonton sculptor Royden Mills, consists of three sculptures placed in conceptually linked sites throughout Terwillegar Park. The sculptural components link the viewer with the site’s history and the sounds of nature, while offering an invitation to slow down and immerse in time and nature’s tempo.

“The sculptures, Potential, Resonant Point, and Beyond Listening, each offer a figurative and literal connection to a ‘resonant progression’,” explains Mills. “My intent was to metaphorically respond to the site, and through the inclusion of acoustic properties within each, construct a literal resonance. The sculptures are low-tech and rugged, marrying hand-welded steel with granite boulders I hand-selected from the Edmonton area. I envision it as a place where families may joyfully play for generations”.
“The best of public art can challenge, delight, educate, and illuminate. Most of all, public art creates a sense of civic vitality in the cities, towns, and communities we inhabit and visit,” said Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts. “As these Public Art Network Year in Review selections illustrate, public art has the power to enhance our lives on a scale that little else can. I congratulate the artists and commissioning groups for these community treasures, and I look forward to honoring more great works in the years to come.”

The projects selected for Year in Review can be viewed on this page and are on display throughout the Annual Convention. Three independent public art experts—Bryan Lee, Jr., director of design at Colloquate Design in New Orleans; Karen Mack, executive director of LA Commons in Los Angeles; and Denver artist Patrick Marold—discussed the trends they uncovered while examining hundreds of submissions in selecting this year’s choices for the most exemplary, innovative permanent or temporary public art works created or debuted in 2017.

Classical Movements on the Potential Defunding of the National Endowment for the Arts
As a for-profit company, yes, Classical Movements does not directly depend on the National Endowment for the Arts.
Of course, the very nature of our work—Moving the Music, Changing the World—would suffer immensely, perhaps irrevocably, should the 114th Congress of the United States of America vote “yea” on the present presidential administration’s proposed budget, an earmarking that so cravenly aims to zero-out all funding for both the NEA and the NEH.
The arts and the humanities in this country struggle to survive as it is; one can easily imagine that any ensemble staring down such in-the-red resources would decide quite quickly that touring to one of our 145-plus destination countries is a luxury ill afforded.
From the beginning, over a quarter-century ago now, Classical Movements has worked almost exclusively with orchestras and choirs that rely on some kind of federal money to ably ply their craft, as ensembles the world over duly depend on fiscal support from their own governments.
Beyond CM’s own personal investment in seeing the National Endowment for the Arts continue, ungutted, we firmly assert it’s absolutely essential to this nation’s continued cultural vitality that American arts organizations flourish, unabated.
Even with the NEA’s $147.9 million purse (a mere .oo4% of the total federal ledger, just $0.46 for every American), U.S. performing arts groups struggle still to overcome many, often multivalent obstacles, all too often at the expense of pursuits that would better fulfill their aesthetic mission.
As a recipient of Americans for the Arts’ BCA10: Best Businesses Partnering with the Arts Award, for the last 25 years, Classical Movements has done its part to help fill in the gaps among local, state and federal coffers. And as a truly global company, we remain committed to facilitating cultural diplomacy throughout the globe—promoting peace through the medium of music.
That all starts, though, from our home office here in Alexandria, Virginia, a scant six miles south of the NEA’s 7th Street headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Last year, the National Endowment for the Arts distributed more than 2,400 grants to some 16,000 communities in every congressional district across this great land. Now, it’s time to pay that fortune forward, to save LBJ’s NEA and, ultimately, the arts in America, insofar as we’ve all come to love them:
Call your Congressperson.
Don't know who your Representative is? Find out here.
Aren’t sure who’s your Senator? Click here.
Write to the members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees.
Even better? Schedule an appointment for you and your ensemble to visit their offices!
All American art-lovers deserve more, never less, from their audiences, their communities and, especially, their elected officials. To wit, we wholeheartedly believe that defunding NEA and/or NEH would be a devastating blow to our national artistic identity, as well as this nation’s humanity, indeed. #SAVEtheNEA

AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING PUBLIC ART PROJECTS
Destiny Swiderski’s Amiskwacîw Wâskâyhkan îhtâwin is Honored Today by Public Art Network Year in Review
WASHINGTON, DC —Americans for the Arts today honors 49 outstanding public arts projects created in 2016 through the Public Art Network Year in Review program, the only national program that specifically recognizes the most compelling public art. Chosen by a jury from 325 entries representing communities across the country, the roster of winning projects was unveiled at Americans for the Arts’ 2017 Annual Convention in San Francisco.
Amiskwacîw Wâskâyhkan Îhtâwin is immersive wayfinding that celebrates Edmonton’s people, history, landscape, and wildlife. Walkers are led from Michael Phair Park into Beaver Hills House Park by a flock of Bohemian wax-wing birds. 150 copper silhouettes capture the birds in all stages of flight and are decorated with storytelling patterns created in community workshops facilitated by Métis artist Destiny Swiderski. Knowledge holders and Elders supported the artist throughout. The artwork places Cree – an Indigenous language of the Edmonton area – in the heart of downtown. The syllabics and translation express the Indigenous roots of this special place; a place to gather and share stories about the past, present, and future.
“These selected works reflect the incredible diversity of public art projects, including temporary to permanent, sculpture to performance art,” said Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts. “The innovation of work demonstrated in the Public Art Network Year in Review shows the breadth of talent from artists around the country. I congratulate them and their commissioning groups for these community treasures.”
"Successful design is the understanding of the historical references of site, place, and time that turns the community's voice into an experiential narrative that captures the identity of that place,” said artist Destiny Swiderski.
The presentation of the Public Art Network Year in Review was generously supported by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, sponsor of the 2017 Public Art Preconference: Expanding the Ecosystem. Jurors Sherri Brueggemann, manager of the Public Art Urban Enhancement Program for the City of Albuquerque Cultural Services Department; Kevin B. Chen, artist and curator from Oakland, CA; and artist Alison Saar from Los Angeles, CA, were on hand for the session to announce the selected projects.
The artworks selected for the Public Art Network Year in Review can be seen on this page. The complete presentation, which includes photos and descriptions of the 49 works, is available for purchase through Americans for the Arts’ store.
Public Art Resource Center (PARC)
At the 2017 Annual Convention, Americans for the Arts also unveiled its new Public Art Resource Center (PARC). Supported by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, PARC is a first-of-its-kind online portal where users can access resources and tools tailored to the specific needs of a rich array of stakeholders in public art, including artists, public art administrators, private sector partners, fabricators, and community stakeholders, among others. A public art services directory, a public art programs directory, and many other resources are available on PARC, giving the field centralized access to information about current and ongoing issues impacting the public art field.
The Public Art Network is a program of Americans for the Arts, designed to provide services to the diverse field of public art and to develop strategies and tools to improve communities through public art. The network’s constituents are public art professionals, visual artists, design professionals, and communities and organizations planning public art projects and programs.
Americans for the Arts is the leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education in America. With offices in Washington, D.C., and New York City, it has a record of more than 55 years of service. Americans for the Arts is dedicated to representing and serving local communities and creating opportunities for every American to participate in and appreciate all forms of the arts.

First job, second office. American Council for the Arts took over the old Museum of Radio and Television building. The ACA Books program was doing great, thanks to Bob Porter's leadership (and my tenacious marketing). I also had a short-lived stint as Marketing Director for the whole organization. Unfortunately, I wasn't as successful at selling memberships as I was selling books. By 1993, it was time to move on. #americansforthearts #acabooks #oneeast53rdstreet #newyork #nyc #tbt #myfirstjob (at Amer Ft Arts)
