Zatte. . Beer (Bier). . Drank… in Amsterdam this month, a Zatte beer brewed by Brouwerij ‘t IJ at Restaurant De Waaghals. Advertised as “The very first beer brewed by Brouwerij ‘t IJ, back in 1985. It is a ‘tripel’, the category reserved for the stronger, blonde beers in Belgian tradition. Zatte more than lives up to expectations in this respect. It is a full-bodied, golden beer with a scent of fresh fruit mingled here and there with a hint of grain. The flavour is slightly sweet, ending with a fine, dry aftertaste. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 | The name that appeared the most when I asked people what the best burger in Amsterdam is was definitely @the.beef.chief. After a short ferry and a 20 minute walk you’ll find them at @oedipusbrewing in the middle of a recently redeveloped industrial estate. It’s owned and run by Simon, from Chelmsford, Essex, who’s been out in the Netherlands for a considerable amount of time now. If you recognise the name The Beef Chief then you may recognise it from National Burger Day at @streetfeastldn a couple of years ago. Simon knows his stuff about the burger scene in London. We know all the same people, he knows the restaurants, we spoke for around 2 hours, he’s one of the nicest guys around. He explained to me about the culture of burgers in Amsterdam. People don’t really care for dry aged patties, and quality of beef isn’t as explored as it is here, butchers don’t really supply it. So he told me instantly that you’re not going to get your levels of Bleecker over there. But to be honest it didn’t matter. Take away the expectations of a 60 day aged patty from a rare breed and focus more on the taste and construction. Simon knows how to emphasise the meat with the toppings and ingredients, keeps it cooked nice and juicy, and finishes it off with a really nice bun. I can definitely see why this is a favourite in Amsterdam. He experiments a lot; using pastrami, kimchi, and more, to bring new things to the burger world of Amsterdam. Plus, his kimchi fries are INCREDIBLE.
